To answer the OP - I think for men and for women it's a very defensive sort of thing to say that I think maybe comes from a place of not wanting to be seen as emotional on the one hand, or because they don't believe they'd be good with children so refuse to try and instead box that feeling away and give this nonchalant response instead. I used to say I didn't like kids and I wasn't bothered about having any. I still don't know if I'll have any, but I realise that I was being silly before because it was just this empty catchphrase of sorts to seem blokey and blasé. I guess maybe it's a selfish person's catchphrase. Bringing a child up is all about self sacrifice and saying you hate kids is a way of cutting that idea at the root and saying no, my life is about me and me only. So definitely plays into giving off a ruthless no holds barred appearance, especially on something like The Apprentice where you want to come across as in control and self assured... but I think it's actually a very insecure comment to make...

I haven't seen the movies! I didn't know there were any...

I read the books through and though as a child, in fact I re-read them last year. It's an ambition of mine to visit Prince Edward Island.

I think it's easy for us to forget that children aren't always going to be children, and that we were children once and adults probably despised us, running around in our masses like demonic pigeons and spewing all over their favourite shirts. It's easy for us to forget that, when we're long gone, these people are what we'll be leaving behind. I personally don't see how someone can dislike a child, but it doesn't bother me either way. I imagine the only thing that can change that opinion is having a child yourself and actually watching them grow up right before your eyes.
