I do find it funny that the only two members here supporting forcing a woman to wear uncomfortable shoes at work are men aswell. I always wear heels. That's my choice. No one should ever be forced into wearing something they don't want to wear. Of course the men in this company aren't forced to wear heels so if they want the women to, they're going to have to time warp back to the 1950s.

they cant be that uncomfy as women wear them all the time and spend a fortune on them

They're really uncomfortable, I rarely if ever wear them and when I do they're the fatter ones because the others hurt my feet too much. Why do you suppose at weddings etc 90% of the women end up walking around in bare feet or bring a flat pair in their bags by the time the dinner is over? High heels alter your posture and compromise the natural curve or your spine. If a woman wants to take the risk of permanently shortening her calf muscles and put stress on her vertebrae that could inevitably lead to disc flattening and stenosis, that's up to her but only she must be allowed to make that sacrifice.

I'm not disagreeing with you. Wearing an advertising sandwich board and tracking round the streets can't be very comfortable. Wearing a mickey mouse outfit or buzz lightyear outfit all day can't be very comfortable, but its agreed to when they take on the job. The same applies in this case. Thats why she doesn't have a leg to stand on in this particular case.

It's not comparable at all, wearing a costume or a sandwich board is the job in those situations. Being a receptionist doesn't require heels as part of a job description, wearing them or not doesn't effect the actual work entailed in that job (except the receptionist might be happier when her feet are comfortable )

I got the impression she wasn't aware of the dress code until she got there, as a receptionist you sit behind a desk, a lot of the time no one will see your feet, as long as she was smartly dressed I don't see the issue, the agency are at fault for not telling her she HAD to wear heels.
If you work at Libertys in London as a female you have to have polished nails, that is even more ridiculous

People need to be careful what they sign up to and agree to on taking a job. Its not just about shoes, its about a whole range of things. You can't sign it and then do the complete opposite without there being repercussions. In this case, they seem to have changed their policy, so all is well, but the majority of the time that won't happen, so be careful of the small print always.

It's fine to say smart shoes but insisting women wear heels is just the height of sexism and is unnecessarily forcing a woman to be uncomfortable for no apparent reason other than men like the look of womens legs in heels better than in flat shoes and that is the crux of it, let there be no doubt about that

My Mum has never worn high heels since her teenage years and she stopped then because she could never walk properly in them and they were really uncomfortable.

As far as I am concerned, yes for work maybe 'smart' shoes are a must in some professions or work but the overriding priority should always be what the wearer is most comfortable in.

If that is flat shoes rather than high heels, they should not be expected to and certainly never forced to, wear high heels.
