Shot at San Francisco University, it shows an unnamed black woman blocking the path of Corey Goldstein, who sports the controversial hairstyle. Referring to his dreads, she claims: “It’s my culture” 'does he have the right to style it in a way that has a deep cultural meaning to minority cultures? The ability to style your hair for fashion’s sake is a luxury, not a right. If it is offending others, Goldstein should consider giving up that luxury.' What are your thoughts on this, is this an example of cultural appropriation? http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/...-a6964906.html

I'm more upset by his choice of words "the coloured community". Do they still use this terminology in the US
![]() It's a hairstyle it doesn't belong to any culture, should white people accost black people that relax their hair ![]() Last edited by Cherie; 04-04-2016 at 09:04 AM. |

Except black people don't relax their hair to copy white people is to manage their hair. And white people use flat irons to straighten to hair so no relaxing is not to copy whites. And whites are not the only ones with straight hair. In fact when black women buy extensions they don't buy ''causcasian'' extensions it's more peruvian, brazilian, etc..

Regarding the rest of your comment I explained in another comment why it's extremely annoying.

Posting black issues on a board full of white people is just a waste of time because they'll just ridicule it off the bat instead of trying to understand where the animosity is coming from.

The problem is that almost every post you make on this board is complaining about white people, white women mainly tbh, I do try to listen to where you're coming from and to understand but as a white woman myself it gets wearing listening to you insult me almost everytime you post tbqh. I do actually agree with you on alot of things you say but this is just stupid imo. I've never actually saw you say ever that "you know what that isn't racist" it's like you're always waiting for something you can call racist

This isn't a black issue though, it's just a hairstyle - and one that isn't even synonymous only with black people.

Blue eyes is no specific to whites, I posted a black woman with blue eyes. Egyptians wore it first. Everyone seems to get into an uproar when this sort of thing happens to a white kid, where was the world wide outrage when black girls were wearing braids in school and people called it **** locks? Where was the front page story? And then that little black girl goes home crying thinking she's not beautiful enough because school, media, and tv tell her white, straight hair is more beautiful. But oh no, you're not suppose to grow up with any animosity little black girl. You're supposed to behave. There are still racist people in the world, but not everyone, don't hold every white person accountable even though the majority are still benefiting from their ancestors doings and the media is still calling you butt ugly with apparently ''scientific'' facts while your white workmate is the beautiful. Next week she can wear **** locks and everyone's loving it.

Baffling. Thankfully the UK does not get itself into such a mess over this 'cultural appropriation' thing as they do in the states.

It seems to me that the woman is just looking for a fight, but she's picked a stupid reason for that.

If white people can't have dreads then black people can't use straighteners / wear straight-hair weaves or wigs. Surely. Or does it only work one way.

Wearing dreadlocks is not cultural appropriation.

That was honestly one of the stupidest articles I've ever read (as well as patronising to white people and black people). And when you have to start quoting Azealia Banks to try and back up your points you know you're struggling ![]() EDIT: This is his response by the way... Spoiler:
