Cops have been firing rubber bullets at anyone and everyone, people stood on their porches, a pregnant woman, protesters. They've used tear gas on peaceful protesters, dragged people out of their cars and arrested them. Threatened and HAVE run over people. They've had so many chances to de-escalate, but they chose time and time again to make things worse.

Jim Mattis, a retired general and former defence secretary, castigated Donald Trump as an immature president making “a mockery” of the constitution, as he joined a chorus of retired military officers who have slammed the president for his response to the George Floyd protests.

“Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people — does not even pretend to try. Instead he tries to divide us,” Mr Mattis wrote in The Atlantic. “We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership.”

Mr Mattis, who was seen as one of “the adults” in the administration, quit in 2018 after Mr Trump took a snap decision to remove troops from Syria over his objections. Trump critics had urged him to speak out, but he had stayed out of the fray until Wednesday.

Mr Trump shot back at Mr Mattis on Wednesday, claiming to have fired him, even though the retired Marine submitted his own resignation.
