Default Tipping in bars and restaurants

Prompted by this article this morning: I had to laugh because I do have friend from both Yorkshire and Leeds: and they very rarely tip here, but oddly - they do when we are abroad on vacations.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...d-Kingdom.html

Having done 2nd (and 3rd) jobs in the past, from bar work to cocktail waitressing: and knowing that tips do form a large part of 'your wages', I do tend to tip, and tip well if the service is good.

Are you a generous tipper or are you a meanie?

I will only tip if the service is good.

I despise places where a tip is compulsory and added onto your bill

Here in the US, some restaurants if you have a party of more than five will automatically add it on to your bill.

But yeah Vicky, I agree with you.
It depends on how the service is on how much I'll tip the person.

You don't have to pay that btw.

If I see this, I always ask the staff if they in fact, do get the tip (often as you'll know, they dont). If they don't, I ask for it to be removed from the bill, and give out a personal tip.

Of course I don't tip if it's crap service, at all.

You aren't forced to pay a tip?
I mean, we're not either, but they get really angry if we don't.

No, no. I mean the 'service charge' that is added to the bill as part of the bill when presented. If you feel the service has been under standard, you are within your rights to have that service charge removed - or to not pay it. But if there has been good service, It's a ploy used by less honest restauranteurs - the service charge is meant to be passed onto the staff - some owners don't do that. Some, not all.....

Hence the reason that if I see such a charge - I will ask a staff member if they are given the 'service charge' into their tips jar..... if they say no, I won't pay the service charge on the bill...but will give it personally and in cash to the waiter/waitress.

Working with Joe Public in this line of work is a bloody thankless task - and often, the best tippers are those who either do work or have worked in these areas - that's why we know tips really do make up a lot of the wages.

When I did bar work / cocktail waitressing - my tips were always 2 to 3 times as much as my 'wages'. It's long hard hours for a pittance - so tips and good ones are needed.

Depends on the service really - but I always make sure it actually goes to the people serving me.

I think people should always tip really, even if the service isn't that great just reduce it a bit and only give 5%, although I agree that it a compulsory "service charge" shouldn't be added to the bill

Really.

If you get crap service, crap quality, why should anyone be given extra for failing in their job.? You'd be as well just giving them money for doing nothing. Just pass the door and throw a fiver in, for the hell of it

This.

I hate the service charge automatically being added, especially if my waiter/waitress won't even get any of it.

I prefer to tip, and I'm usually really generous; leaving about 20% of my bill if I know the waitress/waiter will keep their own tip.

I disagree. I think a tip should be left if your wiater or waitress has given good service. If they have been rude or miserable then they shouldn't get anything.

Although there is nothing worse than having a large party say of about 20 who all night are demanding as hell, run you ragged all night and taking your time away from your smaller tables only for this large party to all pay individually and not leave anything. Tight fisted bastards.

But tipping is the reason that waiters/waitresses generally receive by far lower wages seeing as they're factored into their income so I don't think it's that unreasonable to always leave a few quid behind. Service might not have been great but then if anyone in any other job doesn't have a great day they'll still receive a full wage, can't really say the same for waiters/resses.

Ach rubbish...

So you get a dour faced bitch firing your menu down on the table. dont ask if you want a drink while you are perusing menu. Brings food and bangs down plates without a word. Avoids all interaction, checking if you need refills during meal, etc... and you want to tip them regardless.

aye... good luck running your own business.

Out for a meal,I generally do give or leave a tip, however often when out with student mates, some staff seem to take the attitude we are 2nd class citizens so they would get no tip at all.
Some Restaurant staff are really rude at times if a group of students go in. It's entirely different when with my family and we go out for a meal.I feel everyone should be treated the same.

In Pubs or Clubs then generally I wouldn't bother with change and if used to the person behind the bar then I will usually tell them to take for a drink themselves.
Yes though, I feel happier if a do give a tip for good service.

I don't see the point in tipping in a greasy spoon

And restaurants are expensive enough as it is

In our local Indian restaurant my dad usually gives the tip directly to the guy who serves us as apparently his boss takes away the tips.
