Winter 2013 into 2014 is forecast to be “exceptionally severe” with above-average snowfall and plunging temperatures.

Long-range weather forecasts warn of bitter Arctic gales leading to feet-deep snow drifts right up until February.

Snow forecasts for winter 2013 suggest much of the country will be hit by heavy wintry downpours with no let up well into next year.

As lovers of the white stuff ask ‘will it snow?’ this winter, the general consensus among long-range forecasters is a resounding ‘yes’.

However they said winter could bring chaos similar to the big freeze of 2010/11 which saw airports close and roads grind to a standstill for months.


The warnings come as temperatures begin to dip around the UK with the first “real taste” of winter likely to hit next week.

James Madden, forecaster for Exacta Weather, said Britain is braced for “copious” snowfall this winter with extreme cold expected to last into the spring.

He added that Britain faces “an incomparable scenario to anything we have experienced in modern times”.

He said: “An exceptionally prolonged period of widespread cold is highly likely to develop throughout this winter and last into next spring.

“It will be accompanied by snow drifts of several feet and long-lasting snow accumulations on a widespread scale.

“This period of snow and cold is likely to result in an incomparable scenario to anything we have experienced in modern times.

“A scenario similar to December 2010 is likely to develop, but on a more prolonged scale in terms of overall duration.”

So that's 3 or 4 articles I have read like this now but then if you check the long term weather forecast on the MET office they say temperatures should be higher than normal, so basically they don't have a clue then and are taking a massive guess with this..so why run the scare mongering articles like the one above? some people will be even more worried now about energy bills and food supplies etc

Weve not even had any rain in Newcastle for weeks let alone snow. We had a bit of frost on Sunday but its been blinding sun for days, cold and windy as well though.

Any forecast that's further than five days away should be taken with a whole load of caution. A forecast that's 48 hours in advance will change as the hours progress, so trying to forecast a seasons worth of weather this far in advance is extremely difficult. Long range forecasting isn't that advanced yet and so anyone that truly believes the forecast and doesn't think that it can change, and believes the fear mongering articles the tabloids publish only to then complain in a few months when it hasn't been as accurate as they predicted, is very foolish.

Having said that, this is one long range forecast that I seriously hope comes true.

Josy, do you follow Windy Wilson on FB? I always go by his forecasts. He's the only one that correctly predicted the horrific winter if 2010.

Some people actually enjoy the winter months you know, the snow, the frost, the dark nights and the cold crisp mornings and days, we are used to having pretty harsh winters in this country and it doesn't make someone a bad person if they like the winter.

It also doesn't mean they hope for services to stop, wish harm on others or even loss of lives.

I like the snow but I hate driving on it or ice. I wouldn't object to getting snowed in at home for a few days though Ugh last time something like that happened though I was trying to get home which isn't good, took me 4 and a half hours to get home in what should have taken me 30minutes

I asked jack why this long term senario was attractive due to the mention of the widespread disruption and loss of services that was said to accompany this josy.

My view is I hope the forecast is wrong, the length and scale of this winter is really frightening.
I would worry about the long and short term implications of such extreme weather conditions both socially and economically.
Winter is exceptionally hard for the vulnerable, and although it's to be expected seasonally I wouldn't have thought anyone would seriously want any adverse weather to continue in fear of it impacting negatively as it is suggested in the Express article in the OP.

I may or may not make a snow angel, I haven't decided.
