Giggs in tribute to Sir Alex

Ryan Giggs has paid a personal tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson during an exclusive interview with MUTV.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/08B0DD05970D45C2A6BB278BA224F11C.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,97,1876,796

The veteran midfielder came off the bench in the victory against Swansea in the manager's final home game in charge and was clearly emotional afterwards, even if he is already looking forward to playing under only his second domestic boss in David Moyes next term.

"Obviously it's been an emotional day," said Giggs. "He's been such a massive part of my life. I met him when I was 13 to what I am now, 39, so it's a long time. Yes, it's an emotional day.

"Not only for my career [has he been such an influence] but for my life. He has been a massive part of my life. He's seen me from a boy to a man and seen me grow. I've seen him mature over the years from the manager I knew when I was younger. He has done everything for me both on and off the pitch."

It was vital for Giggs that United conjured up a late winner to pick up victory and provide a fitting tribute for Sir Alex.

"He said in his pre-match talk that he wanted to make sure we didn't play the occasion but played the game," added the Welshman. "And made sure we did what we've been doing all season, which is winning games.

"I mean it probably summed up the time that he's managed as we've had so many important late goals. He probably didn't expect Rio [Ferdinand] to come up with what was a great finish but it was a fitting end to what was a brilliant career at Old Trafford."

The prospect of working under Moyes thrills Giggs, who recently signed another one-year contract extension to prolong his remarkable career with the Reds.

"Obviously, it's exciting times," he stated. "Next season will be exciting times. David Moyes has obviously been brilliant over the last 10 years for Everton and hopefully he'll carry on that good work here at United."

Yesterday was obviously more emotional for Giggsy because of how close to SAF/Scholesy he is :worship:.

Giggs: Scholes is 'amazing'

Ryan Giggs says it has been "a pleasure" to play alongside the retiring Paul Scholes.

http://www.manutd.com/~/media/1F04222F83334C94A7F36D951C42F5F3.ashx

Scholes made his final United bow against Swansea on Sunday after nearly 20 years in the first team. Giggs, who will play into his 40s next season, paid tribute to his colleague and close friend after the midfielder said farewell on Sunday.

"He’s a brilliant player to play with and it has been a pleasure over the years," Giggs told MUTV.

"You’ve seen him today - he’s not played for I don’t know how long and he comes in and his little five-yard passes and 30-yard passes, plus his range of passing, was just unbelievable. He’s just a pleasure to play with – someone who, as a forward player, you knew if you made a run, he would play you in.

"You wouldn’t even have to break stride as you knew the pace of the pass would be perfect and he’d put it where you wanted it to be put. He is just an amazing player and an amazing person."

He is indeed and a United legend:worship:.

Sir Alex: Thank you, and farewell

Sir Alex Ferguson bade farewell to a packed Old Trafford on an unforgettable afternoon in United's history.

http://www.manutd.com/~/media/A2CC89D75CA74014B5D6B505152EF86B.ashx?20130512T171 6504310

Ahead of his impending retirement at the end of a 26-and-a-half year stint in charge of the Reds, the boss addressed the capacity crowd to reflect on his incredible tenure.

Click on the video above to watch Sir Alex's emotional farewell. You can read a full transcript below.

Sir Alex: "I've got absolutely no script in my mind, I'm just going to ramble on and hope I get to the core of what this football club's meant to be.

"First of all, it's a thank you to Manchester United. Not just the directors, not just the medical staff, not just the coaching staff, the players or the supporters, it's all of you. You have been the most fantastic experience of my life.

"I have been very fortunate to manage some of the greatest players in the country, let alone Manchester United. All these players here today have represented your club the proper way - they've won the championship in a fantastic fashion. Well done to the players.

"My retirement doesn't mean the end of my relationship with the club, I'm able to now enjoy watching them rather than suffering with them. If you think about it, those last-minute goals, the comebacks, even the defeats, are all part of this great football club of ours. It's been unbelievable, thank you for that.

"I'd also like to remind you that when we had bad times here, the club stood by me, all my staff stood by me, the players stood by me and your job now is to stand by our new manager.

"Before I start blubbering, I just want to pay tribute to Paul Scholes... he's unbelievable; one of the greatest players this club has ever had and will ever have.

"Paul, we wish you a good retirement and I know you'll be around to annoy me! Also I'd just like you to join me in wishing Darren Fletcher a speedy recovery.

"The players... I wish the players every success in the future. You know how good you are, you know the jersey you're wearing, you know what it means to everyone here and don't ever let yourself down. The expectation is always there. I'm going home, well, I'm going inside for a while, and I want to say thank you again from all the Ferguson family. Thank you."

Jones joy at winners' medal

Phil Jones struggled to put into words how it felt to collect his first title winners' medal on Sunday.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/D8B2B56F10BE41E4BF490AB8C8C03E05.ashx?h=359&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=0,1,686,1028

The defender was one of a number of players to sample their first title triumph on a memorable day which also saw Sir Alex bid farewell to the Old Trafford faithful. And Jones hopes this will be the first of many medals to come.

"It is an incredible feeling [to win the league]. I can’t sum up in words what it means to me, my family and my friends. It is an incredible feeling and it is an incredible day.

"We have just picked a trophy up and we want to win more. Hopefully, this is the first of many and I’m sure the new boss will come in and do another fantastic job."

The England international also paid tribute to United's outgoing manager. "He has been an incredible manager over the years. I am just so thankful that I managed to play under him and win a title; his last as United manager.

"Personally, I can’t thank him enough for what he has done for me. He has played me at the right times and he has been amazing.

"There are no words to describe how he has been, not just for me but for every single player that has come through Manchester United under his reign. I wish him all for the best for the future."

Congratulations Phil, here is to more in the future:).

If he wants to go then fair enough. I think fans should thank him for his service despite what they think, but I hope we do sell him abroad if he won't budge on his thinking.

Perhaps he will reconsider with Moyes coming in and like what Gary Neville said it is about ego and reassurance with some players.

I'm not happy about him doing it, would I rather we keep him? Yes, but I would only like us to sell him with a replacement lined up.

As much as I find it hard to believe, Miguel Delaney (actual journalist lol and has strong links to United) said they may well be willing to sell to Chelsea.

Do hope we sell abroad of course.

Carrick enjoys acclaim

Michael Carrick clearly revelled in the post-match celebrations on Sunday and enjoyed hearing his terrace chant belted out time and time again.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/30684D5E9EAC481E980ADF36B066B3F4.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=0,2,600,449

The cultured midfielder has enjoyed a fabulous campaign and is in contention for the club's Player of the Year award, rightly receiving the acclaim from the supporters. As he danced on the pitch with his family to the tune, the England international admitted he is thrilled with the backing from the Old Trafford faithful.

"It's taken a while to get used to," he told Sky Sports. "But obviously it's terrific. Just going on the lap of honour and having people sing your name, it's a great feeling. I've enjoyed this season especially; last year was tough to take and it just makes it even sweeter this year, the way we've done it. I've been happy with my own performance and it's nice for them [the fans] to keep singing it!"

Rio Ferdinand's late winner against Swansea provided a fitting ending for Sir Alex's Old Trafford schedule as the players managed to get another three points despite the focus on also providing a proper off-the-field send-off for the manager.

"We wanted to go out on a high and, thankfully, we have got the winner to give us that elation at the end," he added. "Fitting, I suppose, to get a late goal for the boss to say goodbye to everyone and it was such a special day.

"Even in the changing room, to be honest, he tried to keep it as normal as possible with his team-talk but, even then, in the back of your mind you're thinking: 'This is the last one here,' and then obviously the response and the reception he got from everyone at the start with the guard of honour and the atmosphere was electric. It's something I'll never forget."

A new era will begin from 1 July when Everton's David Moyes takes over the reins and Carrick is likely to remain a key figure in the new manager's plans.

"As a player, we respect the situation with the manager and he said it himself in his speech at the end about the new manager," stated Carrick. "About everybody getting behind him and supporting him. As players we're looking forward to it.

"It's a change. How much change? We'll have to wait and see but we're relishing the new challenge. With the expectation at this club and the responsibilities you have as a player to keep performing, we've got that drive as individuals and we look to keep the success and go on from year-to-year."

''Hard to believe it's not Scholes, it's Carrick you know'' :worship:.

Rio: We'll honour boss

Rio Ferdinand insists the current Manchester United team must honour Sir Alex Ferguson’s legacy by winning even more trophies under incoming boss David Moyes.

http://www.manutd.com/~/media/6C8CE9B352EB46FAAEA00079D4B21AE2.ashx?20130512T191 8110122

Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Swansea City was the manager’s final outing at Old Trafford, bringing the curtain down on an unprecedented reign that yielded 38 major honours - making him the most successful British manager of all-time.

And Rio, who fittingly scored a late winner to conclude an epic afternoon, is adamant that his team-mates will retain the attributes that defined Sir Alex’s tenure, stating his desire to claim more honours.

“The manager's last game at the club is an unbelievable moment and to be a part of that was great,” Rio told MUTV. “It was only right that we finished his career at Old Trafford with the three points - which is what he wanted.

“The manager's desire and appetite to win football matches is unrivalled and it’s up to us to continue that legacy, to continue that with the new manager. The manager (Sir Alex) mentioned the new manager (Moyes) and the support that we need to give him as players, staff and fans of this football club. I’m sure that will happen because this is a great club and we are built like that.”

Ferdinand went on to say: “The manager has left the club in great health and we are looking forward. We have a number of young players who are eager to win things, be successful and to work hard - that is what the manager has instilled in them. The work ethic has got to continue under the new manager if we are going to be successful and I’d like to be a part of that.”

On a personal level, Sunday’s trophy presentation supplied Ferdinand with his sixth Barclays Premier League winners’ medal, a feat he barely dreamt of when he arrived at United in 2002. But now, having been so successful, the veteran defender is desperate for more.

“It is dreams. I dreamt of getting one when I turned up here so to get six is an unbelievable achievement. I remember when I walked through the door and looking at Giggs, Scholes and Gary Neville, and all of the other guys, who all had five, six or seven each.

“I just wanted one and I’d be happy. Then you win one and you want another one. You continue to strive to succeed, to achieve things and to win trophies. That is part of being at this club. The main ingredient of this club is to win things and to be successful.”

Damn right Rio! Whilst SAF is a legend and the end of his era is here and with Scholesy retiring, a new one is beginning with David Moyes taking over and everyone will need to get behind the new Manager:).

Scholes: A fitting end

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes Monday Barclays Premier League trophy parade was the perfect send-off for fellow retiree Sir Alex Ferguson.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/0DCA7019BA944ABBA003F2F3DB99C168.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,7,611,234

The Reds midfielder, who will hang up his boots at the end of the 2012/13 season, was also at a loss for words to describe the incredible scenes in and around the city, even wondering if they better those that following the 1999 Treble-winning parade.

“I think we will remember this for a long time,” Paul told MUTV whilst riding the open-top bus. “The scenes here are incredible. I know we won the treble in 1999 but I don’t remember it being anything like this. This is amazing and it is doubly special for the manager after his last game at Old Trafford. The fans have come out to say goodbye, which is nice.

“I think the manager is the biggest attraction today but it was a big season after the failure of last year. We knew we had to bounce back and we have managed to do that. You can see what it does to you. All the hard work is worth it when you see this many people turn up and look so happy.”

When asked if such a rousing ovation from United fans might change his mind, Scholes was typically blunt in his response: “No, I know it is the right time. But this is brilliant and is a great way to go. You can’t ask for any more than winning the league.”

Of course, Scholes has only one more match to play – this Sunday’s trip to West Brom – before he walks away from both the club and manager he has played for all his life. And he is more than aware of how difficult it will be.

“United means everything really,” he explained. “I have been here since leaving school and it will be difficult because it is all I have ever known. To walk away, you have to do it some time and I think I am ready for it now.

“Sir Alex has meant everything to me and every other player he has had. He is an incredible person, he tries to make his players, not just good players but proper people as well and he has managed to do with every player he has had here.”

Farewell to a United legend, incredible player and brilliant person:):worship:.

Van Persie savours parade

Robin van Persie was thrilled to see the people of Manchester sharing in his title joy on Monday evening, when the champions paraded the Barclays Premier League trophy through the city.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/3CB64C4969434DB8B2485F7636FB13AA.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=0,126,600,572

The Dutchman spoke of his delight from the top deck of United's bus, as he surveyed the scenes on Chester Road and Deansgate on the route from Old Trafford to Albert Square.

"Everyone is so happy, it's just incredible," van Persie told MUTV.

"This trophy is for the fans, the players, the staff... the one thing I really like is it's made so many people so happy. You see kids, babies, women, men, all sorts of people are so happy and I'm very pleased to see that."

Van Persie is still getting acquainted with the Premier League silverware after lifting it for the first time in his career on Sunday.

"The medal hasn't left my neck since yesterday, it's been here all night," he said. "The trophy's a heavy trophy and it's great to win it finally."

United's top scorer in 2012/13 praised the welcoming atmosphere at Old Trafford as he reflected on a successful and "incredible" first season with the Reds.

"It's been really good settling in. The boys have been really, really nice to me from day one. I've noticed that they want to share success and I'm like that as well. I want to have success but I want everyone to play their part in it which they did.

"The guys have great banter, they're good guys, funny guys, we joke around a lot but when we have to work, we do that. We train hard and we play hard as well so hopefully there will be many more trophies to come. I'm sure that will happen with this team.

"We've got loads of big characters. This is what I like about this team. Everyone is his own character, everyone adds to the team. To become champions in the end, every little thing helps."

Van Persie also had a heartfelt eulogy for the manager he has worked with for only one season - Sir Alex Ferguson.

"To be able to work with Sir Alex for one year, it's been a massive year. It's been an unbelievable year which I will never forget. He's an unbelievable manager, maybe the best ever. But he's an even greater person. I'm really honoured to have worked with him."

Zaha in England U21 squad

Wilfried Zaha is Manchester United's only representative in the England Under-21 squad for this summer's European Championship finals.

http://www.manutd.com/~/media/3397FE90D7E04EEDB2348E5C42AF3C17.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=0,26,600,473

Zaha, who will join United in the summer, scored twice for Crystal Palace in the play-offs against Brighton on Monday to book the Eagles a Wembley date with Watford in the Championship final.

Stuart Pearce's England side will face Italy, Norway and hosts Israel in the group stages this June in a bid for tournament glory.

The likes of Ben Amos, Sam Johnstone, Nick Powell and Michael Keane have also been involved recently at this level but they are not in Pearce's 23-man party, that includes a first call-up for Wigan winger Callum McManaman.

Congratulations to Wilfried Zaha:).

Cleverley treasures title

Tom Cleverley expressed his delight at picking up his first Barclays Premier League winner’s medal at the end of a breakthrough season.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/FC28279D179A4276ABD7E2EB3BA66AD8.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,29,800,327

The 23-year-old midfielder is one of a clutch of players in the Manchester United squad who are savouring the feeling of winning the title for the first time.

And he could hardly contain his excitement when interviewed by MUTV during the Reds’ triumphant trophy parade through Manchester on Monday night.

"It is one of the best feelings ever; this is what you work for as a player and it feels unbelievable to have the trophy in my hands," he said.

"I have been at the club for a long time now and I know it is all about winning things, so to be part of that is massive for me. I am buzzing."

Cleverley has looked at home in United’s midfield during a campaign in which he also earned international recognition for the first time.

"I have done all right (this season)," he admitted. "I’ve played over 30 games, managed to break into the England team and obviously won my first bit of silverware.

"I am looking to improve next year but, all in all, I am happy."

Cleverley will continue his development next season without the guiding support of two men who have been hugely influential on his career so far.

Buzzing for Tom and I hope he continues to improve:).

Moyes makes youth promise

David Moyes has promised to uphold Manchester United's traditions of bringing young players into the first team.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/1D9D68CDB67A44838A75B0682A12EB0C.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,170,2279,1014

The Everton manager is replacing Sir Alex Ferguson at the Old Trafford helm on 1 July and will be paying close attention to the Academy and the younger players below the senior squad.

It is clear that the Scot is aware of the need to develop English talent and this is an area where United currently excel. The likes of Phil Jones, Tom Cleverley, Danny Welbeck and Chris Smalling are already established internationals but there are plenty more with potential further down the production line.

Wilfried Zaha is joining the club in the summer from Crystal Palace while Nick Powell was personally scouted by Moyes, according to reports at the time, during his stay at Crewe Alexandra. Warren Joyce's Under-21 side, in action against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, also includes a number of bright Englishmen with Tom Thorpe, Larnell Cole, Ryan Tunnicliffe and Jesse Lingard all mainstays of the successful team.

Everton's youngsters were unlucky to lose out to a late goal at Tottenham in the other semi-final of the Barclays Under-21 Premier League this week and the Merseysiders edged United out of a last-four spot in the Under-18 competition by virtue of a superior goal difference.

"Manchester United have always relied hugely on young players and my priority will always be to promote these talents," Moyes is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail during his address to the Cambridge Union on Monday night.

"It is the right way to go. We need to be producing better English players and we are working to find the solutions. My aim would be to develop these young English players and get more and more coming through.

"[However] There are issues to resolve. How do we get them more games at a competitive level? I like the Spanish model where there is a B team playing in the lower divisions. Could we implement the same here? That would be a starting point.

"Three years ago, I wanted to get the young Everton team into the Conference, as it would be a good place to compete. The FA told us we would have to start from the bottom - in division 27 or something!"

Great:).

Jonny Evans wants to emulate Ryan Giggs trophy haul at Manchester United

The defender is not content with his three league titles

http://www.independent.co.uk/incoming/article8300551.ece/ALTERNATES/w460/Jonny-Evans.jpg

Jonny Evans has claimed his third Premier League title medal means nothing compared to Ryan Giggs' 13.

The Northern Ireland defender has now equalled John Terry and Frank Lampard for number of championships won, which underlines what a winning machine Manchester United became under Sir Alex Ferguson.

It means the examples Evans has to follow mainly come from within the Old Trafford dressing room. And, in that regard, the 25-year-old feels he comes up well short.

"It is my third Premier League medal but it is insignificant compared to what some of the other lads have achieved," Evans told MUTV.

"There are guys in there on five and six. Ryan has 13.

"That is the driving force here.

"People say I have won three. But I want to be up there with the best of them and I am sure there are a lot more in the squad who feel like that."

The attitude of those senior figures will be vital in this summer's transition from the Ferguson era to that of David Moyes.

For United need to maintain the same drive and determination even though they are no longer hearing the same voice that has cajoled so many inspired performances out of them and, since Cristiano Ronaldo's exit in 2009, been the major difference between the Red Devils and the rest.

"I have been a Manchester United fan all my life and I have never known another manager at the club," said Evans.

"I got emotional when Gary Neville left the club so you can imagine what it is like now."

Paul Scholes' retirement leaves Giggs as the last of that famed 'Class of 92', after which Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick, Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic become the elder statesmen.

Evans is amongst those next in line and seemed to have made a significant breakthrough earlier in the season when Ferguson confirmed he was now a first-choice given Ferdinand and Vidic need to be managed through a season.

Clearly, Moyes may have different ideas to his predecessor, which means all the hard work must start again for Evans.

He is quite pleased with his contribution this season though, even if a couple of small injuries have halted his progress at the end.

"I have been happy with the way my season has gone," he said.

" I have picked up one or two little injuries, which I would have liked to have avoided, but I am happy with the games I have played.

"I always wish I could have played more but winning another Premier League is a big bonus and not something to be sniffed at, whilst there are other competitions I would like to get my hands on."

Coach trip: Manchester United will offer Ryan Giggs a role on David Moyes' management team

Reds icon will be asked to play on for one more year while using his wealth of experience of life at Old Trafford to help new boss bed in

http://i3.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article1876135.ece/ALTERNATES/s615/Ryan-Giggs-1876135.png

Ryan Giggs is set to be offered a coaching role at Manchester United by new boss David Moyes.

Moyes, who officially takes over from Sir Alex Ferguson on July 1, wants Giggs to combine a playing and coaching role in what is expected to be the United legend's final season in the first-team.

Incoming boss Moyes wants to get the most out of the unique experience and enduring popularity of Giggs in the Reds' dressing-room to ensure the transition from Ferguson to him is as seamless as possible.

Giggs, who turns 40 in November, has signed a one-year extension to play on for United next season but is expected to play a peripheral role, with more emphasis on him helping out behind the scenes as Moyes settles in at Old Trafford.

Midfield legend Giggs, who picked up his 13th Premier League winner's medal following United's latest title triumph, has completed his coaching badges and is understood to be ready to take up a coaching role under Moyes, only playing occasionally next season.

Moyes sees Giggs as an invaluable link to the United dressing-rooom and is also said to want to find a coaching role for midfielder Paul Scholes, who retired from playing for the second time on Sunday following Ferguson's farewell game at Old Trafford.

Only a week ago, Giggs, who has played 940 times for United, indicated his desire to take up a coaching role when he finishes playing, but said he did not know when.

But Ferguson's subsequent announcement he is to retire, coupled with the swift appointment of Moyes, could see Giggs embark on a coaching career sooner than expected.

"I'm doing my necessary qualifications, which I'm close to finishing now," Giggs had said.

"I wanted to do that and prepare myself as best I can, if I do go into coaching or I do go into management, when I'm finished.

"I've done that while I'm playing, which at times can be tough, doing homework and going on courses while you're still playing, or doing coaching sessions after training.

"I've enjoyed it and it's probably the natural progression. Whether I'll do it straight away or take a bit of time off when I finish, I don't know.

"But at the moment I'm just enjoying my football and preparing myself as best I can for when I finish."

Great idea:):worship:.

Rio retires from internationals

Rio Ferdinand has confirmed that he will retire from England duty to concentrate on his club career and allow younger players to come through the ranks at international level.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/0686AB6D99F1474FBC3B91B103D49298.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,53,650,295

In a statement on Wednesday morning, the 34-year-old Manchester United defender said: "After a great deal of thought, I have decided the time is right for me to retire from international football.

"At the age of 34, I feel it is right for me to stand aside and let the younger players come through, which allows me to concentrate on my club career. The team looks in great shape and there is an influx of young, talented players coming through the ranks which bodes well for the future."

Ferdinand became England's youngest ever defender when he made his debut against Cameroon at Wembley in 1997, a week after his 19th birthday. And the London-born centre-back went on to represent his country at three World Cups and earned 81 England caps.

"I regard it as a great honour and a privilege to have represented my country at every level from under-17s upwards," Rio added. "I have always been very proud to play for England.

"I would like to wish Roy and the team all the best for future tournaments. A big thank you to all the fans, managers, coaching staff and players that I have worked alongside - the journey has been incredible."

Good decision Rio, concentrate on United but he has been treated like crap by England recently, so i'm glad he has finally told them to do one!

Rio: Body was telling factor

Rio Ferdinand has explained how difficult a decision it was to retire from international football with England.

The 34-year-old defender will finish on 81 caps after serving his country with great distinction over the years. After making the announcement on Wednesday morning, he elaborated on the situation before the annual Player of the Year awards at Old Trafford.

"It's not an easy thing to do," Ferdinand informed MUTV. "Retire from playing for your country.

"I'm as passionate as the next man and I always loved doing that. But there comes a time when your body tells you what to do. As much as I've been trying to steer away from that, my body was the telling factor.

"If I'm to remain fit and well and playing at the highest level, something had to give somewhere and international football was it."

Ruud rues bad luck in Europe

Ruud van Nistelrooy has revealed the only thing missing from his goal-laden career is perhaps that he did not get to play in a Champions League final.

http://www.manutd.com/~/media/C0B071399C7A4A5BB6902F96EE46BE02.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,367,3000,1482

The deadly Dutchman graced the forward line for United and Real Madrid and holds a number of goalscoring records but missed out on taking part in the showpiece event.

Despite being top overall scorer in the competition in three separate seasons for the Reds, the closest he came to making the final was when Bayer Leverkusen ended United's trophy hopes at the last-four stage in 2002.

Although many football followers will feel he deserved more than a single Barclays Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup from his time at Old Trafford, the ex-Holland international refuses to have any negative feelings about his fabulous time in Manchester ahead of his return on 2 June to play for both United and Real in the Legends match.

"When I look back at that period at United, I only get a positive feeling," van Nistelrooy told ManUtd.com. "Even if I think about the amount of trophies I won in five years as you can probably expect to win more leagues.

"But it's not a normal thing to win the league. It was very tough. Arsenal and Chelsea were very competitive at the time and, every year, we were very, very close and it could have gone either way. So I'm happy with the one title medal I've got from that period and also the FA Cup medal that I'm really, really proud of. It maybe makes you proud of each one if they come on their own.

"I don't really mind about the amount of medals I won but to not win the Champions League, when I look back on that nine-year period for both United and Real, that is obviously something to reflect on. Really, when you play for nine years at United and Madrid, you are usually going to play in at least one final or more.

"But it's fine. That's the only thing I can say. I have no regrets about anything. I'm just grateful for what I've got."

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has praised the hard work and integrity of his successor David Moyes.

The Everton boss has signed a six-year deal to take over at Old Trafford from 1 July when Ferguson retires.

At the club's awards night, Ferguson, 71, said: "What I know of David is he's hard working and has integrity.

"He's also got a work ethic about him and he's a serious football man. I think these are the qualities he's going to need."

Ferguson, who will stay on at Old Trafford as a director and ambassador, added that it had been difficult to keep his decision to retire a secret.

"I was sitting with my family and you forget you're actually going to retire and talk about next year. You're afraid you're going to blurt out something else but I didn't tell my sons until the end of March," he said.

"I only told my brother [Martin] the night before it was announced and he wasn't too pleased."

Ferguson, who will take charge of his final game against West Brom on Sunday, admitted that it had been an emotional week after 26 years with the club.

"When I announced it to the staff, I was a bit blubby, you know," he said.

"I think, funnily enough, the last few days have been hard and Monday night, after the parade, I slept for 10 hours. I was absolutely gone - knackered."

Academy prize for Pearson

Ben Pearson has been named the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year for 2013.

http://www.manutd.com/~/media/5C03403FC45044DEA6A5B804AD8DD35F.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=0,1,481,359

The midfielder was a regular in Paul McGuinness' Academy team, featuring 26 times, and scored the team's first and last goals of the league campaign.

However, the 18-year-old from Oldham has far more to his game than hitting the net as he is able to exert control on proceedings from the middle of the park and dictate the play with his passing and tackling skills. A fierce competitor, he has many strings to his bow and is rightly being tipped for a bright future.

After captaining England Under-18s against Belgium recently, it has been a terrific year for Pearson, who has also made appearances for Warren Joyce's Under-21 and Reserves sides.

"I'm really proud," said the teenager. "We've had a long season but I think we've done well - apart from in the FA Youth Cup. It's been a good campaign really.

"Most of my game is really about tackling and breaking up the play. The club have been really good to me. I've been here since I was a kid really and am just doing the best I can to get this far.

"It's a massive inspiration to get to see the first-team players every day around the training ground and just seeing them walk around. It's dead good!"

Pearson beat off competition from skipper Liam Grimshaw and fellow midfielder James Weir to win the trophy and follows in the footsteps of some famous names such as Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Phil Neville, Wes Brown and Danny Welbeck.

Januzaj voted U21s' star man

Adnan Januzaj has been voted United's Reserve Team Player of the Year for 2013.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/6119C5EEF5AF476980AD6F8FDE8D3638.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=0,1,600,448

The 18-year-old has emerged as a key figure for Warren Joyce's side since the turn of the year and has made an impressive step up in age group as he continues to learn his trade.

After appearing for the first team in last year's pre-season friendly at Aberdeen, Januzaj has become a more rounded footballer, retaining his flair and creative skills but adding tenacity and work ethic to his game under the tutelage of Warren Joyce.

The Brussels-born youngster produced another excellent display in the Under-21s' semi-final victory against Liverpool at Old Trafford this week and has earned praise from both Sir Alex Ferguson and Joyce for his progress.

"It's always a great feeling to be Player of the Year," he said. "I've been working hard and just want to thank all the players, fans and staff. It's been a great season.

"It's hard when you're injured as you want to show everyone what you can do. I couldn't last year so I've done it this year and I'm really proud to be the Player of the Year."

Januzaj polled over half of the fans' vote to win the Denzil Haroun trophy with Marnick Vermijl in second place and captain Tom Thorpe finishing third.

Robin scoops goal prize

Not surprisingly, Robin van Persie's stunning volley against Aston Villa has been named Goal of the Season at the club's annual awards dinner.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/22564923F407455D81482EA9E94C7910.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,93,840,405

The strike was the second goal of the Dutchman's brilliant first-half hat-trick in last month's 3-0 victory which also clinched a 20th league title for the Reds.

Van Persie, whose goal received 70% of the total votes, had put United ahead after just two minutes, before his sublime finish on 13 minutes.

Wayne Rooney collected the ball in his own half before floating a magnificent 40-yard pass into the path of van Persie whose first-time left-foot volley flew past Brad Guzan. On the goal, Robin said recently: "It was instinct. I looked up and thought: 'This ball is so nice, it's too beautiful to take a touch.' Had it been half a metre to the left or right I couldn't have hit it.

Wayne and I had been talking about playing balls in behind the right centre-back all week. We'd talked about it in training almost every day, then before the game Wayne said: 'Robin, don't forget that ball, I'll give you that ball today.' And it was the perfect pass, it was phenomenal. All I had to do was time my run correctly. In the last second I decided to hit it and I was lucky everything fitted together."

Robin beat off competition from Rafael and Wayne Rooney to win the Goal of the Season prize after polling 70% of the votes. Rafael's belter away at QPR was second with Wayne Rooney's long-range effort in the home win over Norwich finishing third.

Sir Bobby: Moyes the man

Sir Bobby Charlton believes David Moyes is the right man to replace Sir Alex Ferguson at the helm of Manchester United.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/ECD7E0845CC9469A82DB8383C61CAB89.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=3,24,590,242

The legendary ex-England international is a great admirer of the Everton boss and thinks he has similar qualities to those of the United chief.

"You can never say how much we should appreciate Alex Ferguson because he's been just brilliant," Sir Bobby told MUTV. "He'll be there forever in football history. Marvellous.

"But David Moyes is, I think, a very capable person. He's got a great knowledge of the game and is steeped in the game, very much like Alex, although they're all different. When he comes here, I believe he will think he's in paradise as he's got so many good players and good coaches.

"When Alex decided he'd maybe had enough, I didn't know what to do really but he's just a wonderful person and it [the success] will continue because people have learned a lot from him."

Sir Alex is such a legend and will be missed, but we must back David Moyes next season and give him time/faith because United are a club that believes in them two things and stability/continuity!

Van Persie wins fans' award

Manchester United fans have recognised Robin van Persie’s wonderful first season by voting him the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year at the club’s end-of-season awards ceremony at Old Trafford.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/DB81BE5CA166401A96089676F45B7344.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=0,1,562,420

The striker picked up the accolade after garnering 41.5 per cent of the combined votes on our seven language websites, to beat Michael Carrick (29 per cent) and David De Gea (11.5 per cent) into second and third place respectively.

"This was always the plan," he laughed. "I have to be fair - it’s beyond expectations. It made such an impact on me from day one, being involved with all the guys. The way they welcomed me made such an impact and, of course, to be able to work with Sir Alex and Mike [Phelan] and all the staff is more than a pleasure.

"I have to say that winning a trophy is fantastic. It’s great but the road to the whole trophy is maybe even nicer. Being together every day and working on details, getting better step-by-step, beating opponents and then the best feeling of all that is the result and the trophy.

"This whole year has been incredible. I have to thank all the boys, the staff and the fans, who since day one, have been unbelievable. It’s been an honour. It’s made such a big impact on me and I’m still thrilled about what’s happened in the last 10 months or so. Hopefully, we can do even better, crack on and win even more trophies."

When asked if the next aim is the Champions League, he replied: "I would love to. I think we showed we can compete with the best. If you look at the game against Real [Madrid] for example, everything was organised perfectly. Our game-plan was working. We were winning so it was a bit harsh how we lost that game but it’s part of football as well. If you want to be a winner, first you have to deal with disappointments. If you look at the whole club, it’s full of winners. Everyone knows how to win and everyone works hard to win and I love that."

Van Persie was keen to pay tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson as he will always cherish the one season he worked under the legendary United boss.

"It’s only been a year I’ve worked with this great manager and great man," he stated. "But, honestly, I must say it’s been a real honour and it’s had such a big impact. Also in the way he is as a person, we get to know each other. Of course, I see him every day and the way he looks after his boys is like we’re his own kids. He’s always protecting us and looking after us. The meetings he does are incredible. It’s been a joy and I’m proud of that."

It was van Persie’s second award of the evening after his stunning volley against Aston Villa was voted Goal of the Season by a huge margin.

The Dutchman’s 25 goals have been the cornerstone of United’s charge to the Barclays Premier League title but his build-up play and work-rate have been equally impressive.

I must admit at first I wanted Jose because he is a big name, but then I thought that he would not stick around for long.

I like David Moyes and think he has done a great job at Everton, so I have warmed to him becoming Manager because he will be around for the long term and given time/faith by the club and fans because stability is important and also sticking to the traditions e.g. bringing through the youth, winning trophies etc.

As for not winning a trophy it was a concern at first, but then I thought that his record with Everton should not make a difference and at United he will be given more resources and a great structure to try and win trophies, so I am excited for next season and seeing him bring his own personality and ideas to the club/team!

you've got gem, and a hungry one (far more hungrier than Mourinho)

He will carry on the Manchester United that Fergie built, just in the same way Paisley carried on and was even more successful than the house that Shankly built.

He's got 6 years, the fans have to stick by him (and that will be hard for your fans, when all you've known is Fergie)

I predict he'll be hugely successful and i'm making a wild prediction that by the time his six years are up, he will have won at least three titles and two Champions leagues

Ferdinand: Catch us if you can

Rio Ferdinand has thrown down the gauntlet to Manchester United's rivals, insisting the Reds are ready to launch a staunch title defence under new manager David Moyes.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/0F5914FF4120400FB6D846D07EB88A3B.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=5,0,786,582

The centre-back says Sir Alex Ferguson has given his successor every chance of maintaining the club's position at the head of the pack.

"I think this is the way the manager, in his dreams, would have liked to leave the club - in a fit state for someone else to come in and take the reins," said Ferdinand, in an exclusive interview with MUTV.

"We're not going to be looking up to other teams, we're looking down and saying: 'Come and catch us'. We're in a fantastic position. Obviously, Sir Alex's shoes are massive shoes to fill but David Moyes couldn't be walking into a healthier situation. The young players here are hungry and want to win stuff. The senior players have won a lot of things but have still got the desire and the work ethic that the manager has instilled into us. I think that's vital for the future of the football club."

As for his own future, Ferdinand feels he still has plenty to offer at Old Trafford, having been allowed by Sir Alex to manage his own fitness routine in a bid to keep niggling injuries at bay.

"Sir Alex allows you, with other members of staff like the sports science department and physios, to try and work out the way to manage yourself," said the 34-year-old, who announced his retirement from international football yesterday.

"I think that's part of his great management. Some people might try and dictate and say, 'do it this way.' But he gives you that responsibility to work it out for yourself and get to the point where you know what you are doing. He let me do that and it released any kind of pressure. Some managers do put [pressure] on players to be fit all the time. I've been in that situation where I think I need to be fit, I really need to be fit and you almost become a hindrance to the team. It's great for me to get that comfort from the manager. I think, as an older player, you need that towards the end of your career."

With Everton boss Moyes coming in to take charge, Ferdinand admits he, like all his team-mates, will need to impress all over again and start from scratch.

"You've got to prove yourself under the new manager," he said. "He's going to come in with new ideas, new rules and a new regime. No matter how long we've been here, and the likes of Giggsy and myself have been here for many years, we'll be in the same boat as people like Danny Welbeck, Phil Jones and Tom Cleverley. So we've all got to prove ourselves to make sure he thinks we're the right people to start each game."

In the same MUTV interview, Rio reflected on a whirlwind week for the Reds - beginning with the moment when Sir Alex Ferguson informed the players of his impending retirement.

"We came in and there was a notice on the board to say there was a meeting," Ferdinand revealed. "There were rumours in the paper that the manager was going to leave but we were thinking: 'There's no chance he'll be leaving. There are too many good things going on at the club because of the squad he's building'.

"Then he broke the news and the most I remember from it was that it was dead quiet in the room. Even when he left, there was real silence and I think that's just a combination of disappointment and respect as well for the manager's decision. For what he's done for the club, for us as individuals and as a team, you've got to respect his decision. He's been in the game for a long time, he knows what he's doing and I think he deserves a rest."

The atmosphere has since been celebratory of course, from Sir Alex's fitting send-off at Old Trafford to the Premier League trophy parade, during which Rio led the chants and singing on the bus and generally savoured every moment of the latest league triumph. The defender admits some fans might have seen a new side to some of the players.

"I think the fans see us after the games and before the games doing interviews around the training ground and Old Trafford and we're quite serious and straight," he stated. "It's because we're all professional and all directed towards winning and don't want to get out of our comfort zone really. We just get the interviews done and carry on.

"But now it's the end of the season and we've won the league so we can let our hair down, get the party started and we've had a good two weeks. We've had a good few nights out that are well deserved, and the manager has been great because he's let us enjoy it.

"I think I enjoyed my first title [in 2003] unbelievably. When I see now the pictures from the day we won it, I was going bananas! When I think about titles in between, I don't know if I went as crazy, because you take it for granted almost. Now I'm towards the end of my career, I've maybe got a couple of years left and you start really thinking I've got to take it in. I think I took it in this time."

Rio is a class act:). I am glad he is staying at United and thinks he has a few years left in him playing wise and it is important that he stuck around too as one of our experienced players for the David Moyes era to begin soon!

Five in England squad

United have five representatives in the England squad for the upcoming friendlies against Republic of Ireland and Brazil.

Roy Hodgson has called upon Phil Jones, Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck for the international fixtures at the end of the domestic season.

Ashley Young and Chris Smalling were ruled out through injury and, of course, Rio Ferdinand has now retired from England duty but the champions still have more players in the party than any other club.

England: Joe Hart (Man City), Ben Foster (West Brom), Alex McCarthy (Reading); Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Phil Jones (United), Joleon Lescott (Man City), Kyle Walker (Tottenham); Michael Carrick (United), Tom Cleverley (United), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Man City), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Walcott (Arsenal); Andy Carroll (West Ham, on loan from Liverpool), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham), Wayne Rooney (United), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Danny Welbeck (United).

Good luck to the United lads:).

Moyes to manage Wayne

Sir Alex Ferguson insists David Moyes will address the situation regarding Wayne Rooney’s future.

Sir Alex confirmed after Sunday’s match against Swansea that the striker has asked leave to the club and he says it’s a matter that will now be dealt with by the new manager.

“I haven’t spoken to David about it. I’m sure he’ll address it when he gets here,” said the Scot.

“I’ve no idea [why Wayne wants to leave]. It’s not my department. I’m no longer interested in that.

“David is going to deal with that and he quite rightly wants to deal with it. I’m happy with that.”

I think David Moyes will do what he feels is best for the club/team, my feeling is that he will want to keep him but I would not be surprised if Rooney is that intent on leaving that he gets sold.

Wazza is not at the match today because Coleen is close to giving birth!

Sir Alex: I feel honoured

Sir Alex Ferguson admits he has been overwhelmed by the reaction to the title win and his retirement as he believes the celebrations even eclipse the Treble-winning season of 1999.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/D294397EFC8745EA96BA868B9EF911E1.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=62,0,437,280

The United boss will take charge of the Reds for the last time in Sunday's clash at West Brom and is sure to enjoy the occasion after receiving a fabulous send-off from the supporters.

Following the lifting of the trophy last weekend, the squad embarked on an open-bus parade around Manchester in front of thousands of fans and had another night to remember during Wednesday's Player of the Year awards at Old Trafford.

"It's been an amazing last week," conceded Sir Alex during his final pre-match press conference. "I have been overwhelmed. Sunday was unbelievable and, as for the parade on Monday, I thought '99 could not be beaten. But, this time, seeing all the people on the scaffolding was incredible. I think it was better than '99.

"The memories are all there in 26 years at United. The whole thing. The day I came here was a privilege. The day I leave, I feel honoured."

Sir Alex will embark on a new life away from managing the most famous club in the world but is already seeing his diary fill up.

"I haven't thought about what life will be like," he admitted. "I'm driven to take on other challenges right away. I've got the LMA meeting on Monday and then I'm going to Newmarket for two days on Tuesday and Wednesday. I'll go on holiday on 4 June and the Derby's before that on 1 June. I'll have my holidays for a month and then the operation and then the season will start. I'll be alright."

He will be so missed:(.

Van Persie's title craving

Robin van Persie has been “floating on a cloud” since winning his first Barclays Premier League title - and the talismanic Dutchman is determined to retain the crown next season.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/F1A3A3EFFD7B4E39A78889A235F49F11.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,49,790,342

The Manchester United striker has been truly exceptional during his first season at Old Trafford, scoring 25 top-flight goals to help the Reds reclaim the championship from rivals Manchester City.

And during Wednesday’s end of season awards, the Dutchman also took home the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year and Goal of the Season gongs. And although clearly delighted, the 29-year-old is more interested in winning another title with his team-mates.

“It is nice but it is not the main thing, which is winning titles with the team and the club,” van Persie explained to MUTV when asked how it feels to claim the prestigious individual prizes.

“This title makes me happy, it did make me happy, but I want more now because we have a great team and the mentality is unbelievable. We can all play football, we work hard for each other and I believe there is more in the locker.

“But it feels unbelievable. It is just a happy feeling in your belly, it’s like you are on a cloud almost every day. There are moments, like when you are in your car driving and listening to music, when the happy feeling comes along and you think, ‘yes we are champions, we did it’.”

Having won his first title, after spending eight years without winning it at Arsenal, van Persie has understandably been among United’s chief celebrators in the last week. However, last summer's marquee signing admits to feeling contrasting emotions following Sir Alex’s decision to retire.

“It is a mixed feeling because he brought me here,” Robin explained. “Although it has only been one year, it has been a year that has made a huge, unbelievable impact on me because of the way he is, the way he works and the person he is.

“We know him better than some other people. He looks after us like his own kids, he always protects us, he is very helpful, he’s positive and his meetings are incredible. It is just a joy to listen to his words and the things he says are always spot on.

“Last week, when he announced his retirement, it was a very sad day but it has been a brilliant year. That is what I like to think about and I like to remember him as a great person and an unbelievable manager.”

When asked what he’d like to win next term, Robin has encouragingly lofty ambitions: “Next year? The Double will do!”

Ops for Reds pair

Chris Smalling and Nick Powell have both undergone operations but are expected to return for pre-season training with Manchester United.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/4D2C7E0C68F14DE3928AEE6095013374.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,0,627,234

Reds defender Smalling was on crutches during the lifting of the Barclays Premier League trophy after the win against Swansea while Powell has been missing from action at both senior and Under-21 level, despite Warren Joyce's side progressing to Monday's league final against Tottenham at Old Trafford.

"They are not long-term injuries," Sir Alex informed MUTV. "They will be ready for pre-season and that's the important thing. It's why we do these things.

"Chris had problems with his foot and had an operation on it. It'll be resolved and he'll be back for pre-season.

"Young Nick had a small operation to relieve a problem he had and he'll also be available for pre-season training. I knew I was not going to use them for the last part of the season, having won the league, so I think it was important to get the operations done."

I hope the operations go well for them:).

Chicha's debt to Sir Alex

Javier Hernandez has paid tribute to retiring Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson after netting the final goal of his incredible 26-and-a-half-year reign.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/0F22EA9BE5164D18B9F39C36B0FED677.ashx?h=359&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=83,1,700,926

Chicharito admitted he had never been involved in such a "crazy match" after Sir Alex's last game in charge ended in a 5-5 draw with West Brom at The Hawthorns.

The Mexican striker netted United's fifth goal and afterwards spoke of his gratitude for the boss.

"The impact he has had on me is massive. He gave me this big chance to play at the biggest club in the world. He has taught me a lot and I only have thankful words for him," he told MUTV.

"It [Sir Alex's retirement] is not only a loss for the British fans but he has changed football across the world. He has been here for 26 years and made the impossible dream come true like the song says.

"And what can I say about Paul Scholes? All the players say the same thing about him - he's an incredible player and team-mate, and the class and talent he has is unbelievable."

Chicharito's second half strike was his 50th goal for the Reds. It's a landmark he is proud of but he was keen to reiterate that team achievements come before personal ones.

"I'm very pleased to have 50 goals but the most important thing is I have won two league titles in three years and played in the Champions League final. Like I always say the most important thing is the team and to help the team win trophies," he added.

"It's the first time in my career that I've been involved in a game with 10 goals! It was a crazy match and also a bit frustrating because we wanted to win it. I think we thought we had it won which was a mistake because we relaxed a little bit and West Brom made very good substitutions which helped their team. It's frustrating but the most important thing is we have won the league.

"All the players and fans are expecting things for next season," continued the Mexican, "but we need to take this break, look forward and enjoy the fact we have the trophy back."

Chicharito is such a nice guy:, his all round game has so improved and I think he will get more match time next season under David Moyes!

Van Persie hunts more trophies

Robin van Persie is expecting to win more trophies after landing the Barclays Premier League title and the Golden Boot in his debut season with Manchester United.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/1D5BFF9AE3074A43A77ED281C29F73EA.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=0,1,600,447

The league's top scorer claimed his 26th goal in the competition during the final-day draw at West Brom to hit the 30-mark in all competitions. Although Sir Alex Ferguson is retiring, van Persie is convinced that more glory will follow under new manager David Moyes.

"This is a great bunch of players," explained the Reds' No20 on MUTV. "Everybody wants to work for each other and share the success and I'm 100 per cent sure that we will play for trophies every year and, hopefully, win a few every year. That's our standard for this team.

"The Barclays Premier League means everything and the Golden Boot is like a little bit extra but, as I explained last week, I think they should make 25 of them because we do it together.

"Today again, for example, it was a great cross by Antonio Valencia and an easy goal. We did this together and I'm so happy with how everything went. This is a great team and, hopefully, we can go for even more trophies. I'm sure we can.

"Of course, we get a new manager next year and everybody is looking forward to that. It's a new challenge for everyone. We'll have a nice break now and then we go again."

Van Persie admitted it was a crazy game at The Hawthorns to end the title-winning season but he appreciated the send-off that Sir Alex received from both sets of supporters.

"I was waiting for some Fergie time, you know, at the end," joked the Netherlands international.

"But it didn't happen. It was good fun for everyone, to score 10 goals, so I think the fans are pleased.

"Sir Alex deserved it [the acclaim], to be fair, after 26 and a half years at United and, before that, at Aberdeen. He's unbelievable and I think what the West Brom fans did was a nice touch.

"Of course, when you speak about players like Scholesy [Paul Scholes] and managers like Sir Alex, I think it's right to do that [show respect]. It doesn't always happen in football but, today, it did and I'm glad that it did."

Carrick: Time to move on

Michael Carrick says all the players who have worked under Sir Alex Ferguson will be eternally grateful for what he has done for them, but he insists it's important the current squad now look forward to the challenges ahead under their new manager.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/741228F4DB4B42F2B4879825A899E3ED.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=0,1,968,722

Sir Alex bowed out of English football on Sunday after 1,500 games in charge at the Old Trafford helm. It was some way to finish too after a 5-5 draw with West Brom at The Hawthorns.

Carrick says there was a surreal atmosphere in the dressing room after the manager's final match and maintains that focusing on the future is what everyone needs to concentrate on now.

"We've thanked the manager for everything he's done and he's thanked us," the midfielder told Sky Sports.

"It was a funny time in the dressing room because of the situation.

"It is starting to sink in as we've had a couple of weeks to digest the news.

"We're ready to move on. We've had a busy couple of weeks and there is a new challenge ahead for all of us to look forward to."

Reds target Under-21 trophy

Manchester United's final match of the campaign is the Barclays Under-21 Premier League final against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford tonight (Monday 19:00 BST).

Warren Joyce's side tackle Spurs, the Elite Group winners, in what promises to be an entertaining affair following the Reds' semi-final success against Liverpool when Larnell Cole scored a hat-trick.

The teams have already met on four occasions this term, with two wins apiece, and several of United's younger players are pushing for inclusion. Adnan Januzaj was voted Reserve Player of the Year and should be buzzing after being on the bench for the first team for the first time in Sunday's 5-5 draw at West Brom.

Several of his fellow teenagers, including Tom Lawrence, who started in the Liverpool game, will hope for inclusion again and Ben Pearson, winner of the club's young Player of the Year award, is another who has come off the bench of late. Michele Fornasier missed the last outing due to injury, with Michael Keane returning from his loan at Leicester City to partner captain Tom Thorpe, while the likes of Nick Powell and Frederic Veseli are sidelined.

Season-ticket holders and members can get in free, while non-members pay just £5 (adults) or £2 (concessions). Community groups, charities and local football teams can apply for complimentary tickets on +44 161 868 8284. The match is also live on MUTV.

Joyce praises U21 champions

Warren Joyce hailed the character, fitness and winning mentality of his Manchester United Under-21 players after a triumphant end to the season at Old Trafford.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/A35965085F06454194D234955D97B56E.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,24,480,203

After trailing 0-2 at half-time to a talented Tottenham Hotspur side, the young Reds responded brilliantly after the break to win the Barclays Under-21 Premier League final with goals from Marnick Vermijl and Larnell Cole (2).

"To be fair to the first half, I thought we started the game well," said Joyce, in a post-match interview interrupted by jubilant players soaking him with energy drinks.

"The two goals we conceded were due to poor individual errors really. Obviously the second half was better and our players' heart, character and fitness shone through in the end. I thought we thoroughly deserved to win."

The 3-2 triumph capped a fine season for an often-changing side and continued the trajectory for a number of players involved in the club's FA Youth Cup victory of two years ago.

"The bulk of this side won the Youth Cup, won everything they could possibly win last season, they've won the Manchester Senior Cup this year and they've won that trophy tonight," Joyce acknowledged.

"They've shown a lot of character. They can take criticism, they can come back and dig themselves out of holes. That's what you're looking for in a Manchester United player."

Joyce was asked about one player in particular, substitute Tom Lawrence who played a key role in turning the Tottenham tie on its head.

"Tom's not had a lot of football and as I said to him before the game, he can't sustain 90 minutes," said Joyce. "If we'd had a game plan and looking for him to make an impact, I just thought it was better that way round [Lawrence being sub] than him starting the game and having to come off, gambling on us scoring early. He's got to have an operation maybe tomorrow or Wednesday so we had that on our minds as well."

Turning to Tottenham, the winners of two group stages this term, Joyce said: "I think Tottenham have proved this season that they are an excellent passing side.

"They can handle the ball, they've got a lot of creative players and I think they've got several players that will make the grade in that team. They're a bit older than us. They're a bit more experienced. But I just thought the general fitness of our boys told in the end."

Joyce was naturally thrilled his Under-21 players could follow in the first team's footsteps and win their league, to ensure a period of celebration and reflection ended on one more high note.

"Officially this is the gaffer's [Sir Alex Ferguson's] last game at Old Trafford. It's been an emotional weekend for everyone at the football club, it was another emotional day yesterday and we're delighted to have finished the way we have tonight."

Warren has done a great job with the lads, so deserves this recognition!

Stam admires Ajax policy

Former Manchester United star Jaap Stam believes Ajax's policy of recruiting ex-players to the backroom staff could also benefit the Reds in the future.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/99C66F9E040F448B814960DB96C38955.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,314,569,524

The Amsterdam outfit will welcome the popular defender back to the club next season and he will join the likes of Edwin van der Sar, Marc Overmars, Dennis Bergkamp and coach Frank de Boer on the pay-roll.

Sir Alex Ferguson has always insisted that Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are obvious contenders to remain at United in a coaching capacity following his retirement while Nicky Butt, Brian McClair and Mike Phelan are others who have current roles at Carrington.

Stam, who is competing in the Red Heart United Legends game at Old Trafford on 2 June, confirmed he is leaving FC Zwolle for Ajax and explained the ethos being promoted at the Amsterdam ArenA.

"I'm going to Ajax," he told ManUtd.com. "Lots of players say that they don't want to move into management. When I was still playing, I always said I don't want to become a coach as it puts lots of stress on you and you have to work very, very hard.

"You don't only have to look at only one player, you have to think of all the players, the opponents and everything that comes with it. It's very hard.

"When I stopped playing football, the first year after that, I didn't do anything but the club I'm working for now [FC Zwolle], my first professional club as well, asked me to help them out. When I was on the pitch again, it kind of grew on me and it gave me a good feeling. Helping out the lads on the pitch with advice made it easier for them and it gives you a good feeling so you're growing into it. Before you know it, you're working on yourself to become a coach as well so it's good.

"I like doing it and you never know how it will go. You can say you're not going to do it and then it turns out you end up enjoying it and that's what has happened to me as well."

Ajax have a fine reputation for promoting young talent with promising striker Viktor Fischer the latest off the production line.

"Ajax were struggling a couple of years ago for what to do with the club," admitted Stam. "They want to bring in youth but want to become bigger in Europe. For Ajax and all the Dutch teams, it's hard to perform in Europe because the money and budgets are a lot smaller than in England, for instance.

"Ajax want to concentrate on the youth teams as well so they want to bring in former players so they can work with the youth players; make them better, quicker and faster so they can develop very well and maybe get into the first team earlier. The first team is then getting stronger and stronger and, of course, then they can also make good deals with certain players."

When asked if United could benefit from retaining the services of the likes of Giggs and Scholes, Stam replied: "I'm sure of it. Of course, they need to back themselves but, if you see those players with the knowledge they have got of what do on the pitch, they can help players out in certain situations and make it clear to them.

"I think players develop even quicker if players like that help them out in a certain way at a younger age. Ryan Giggs is amazing with what he is doing every time I see him. I am thinking: 'Well, well. I could have done that as well but I don't really think so!'.

"I think Sir Alex Ferguson managed him very well as a player of a certain age sometimes needs a rest at certain times. His skills are very important for United so he's got a good mixture between playing and having a rest. I think that's very important at United.

"I appreciate what Scholesy and Giggsy have been doing and what they've done for the club. It's great and, like I've spoken before, at United in the first team, you've got young players in there as well as players like Scholes and Giggs and that can only help those players joining the first team."

Jaap is class, good luck to him on the coaching staff at Ajax:).

Boss wins LMA award

Sir Alex Ferguson has been named football's top boss by his peers in the League Managers Association (LMA) after a triumphant end to his career.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/DDCA23F2A51244A2A920FA7C6C51B486.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,20,480,199

It’s the fourth time the Scot has scooped the LMA award, sponsored by Barclays - the only other man who has won it on at least three occasions is his successor at Old Trafford, David Moyes.

LMA chairman Howard Wilkinson said: “There is no doubt that the LMA Annual Awards are perceived as the most accurate measure of a manager’s ability because there are no better judges of your performance than your peers. Finding words to adequately describe the monumental levels of achievement and the indelible legacy Sir Alex Ferguson leaves in the game, is nigh on impossible. This evening’s award adds yet another record to that list, making him the only person to secure the much coveted LMA Manager of the Year Award for a fourth time. David Moyes, his choice of successor to the Old Trafford throne, has won it three times and I know that Sir Alex will hope and believe that David goes on to equal and surpass the new record.”

LMA chief executive Richard Bevan said: “It is entirely appropriate that Sir Alex should win the LMA Manager of the Year for a record fourth time following his recent retirement announcement. As he retires as the most successful manager in the history of the British game we congratulate him on a magnificent career spanning over 40 years and more than 2,150 matches in football management, with achievements the likes of which we will never see again."

Sir Alex's LMA success follows last week's announcement that he had been named Barclays Premier League Manager of the Season for the tenth time.

Congratulations Sir Alex:worship:. It is fitting too that the last trophy United won in the season he retired was the new U-21's league:).

Robin retains Golden Boot

Robin van Persie has won the Barclays Golden Boot for the second season in a row after scoring 26 Premier League goals for Manchester United in 2012/13.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/1F52FD21EF3F46678615F34F091FED63.ashx?h=359&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=127,0,628,751

The Dutch striker finished above Liverpool's Luis Suarez (23 goals) and Tottenham's Gareth Bale (21 goals) in his maiden campaign at Old Trafford to help Sir Alex's side win a 20th title.

Van Persie netted with his first shot in the red shirt in August's 3-2 home win over Fulham and his haul included several other memorable goals, including his stunning volley in the title-clinching win over Aston Villa.

The left-foot strike, following a 40-yard pass from Wayne Rooney, completed his hat-trick and was unsurprisingly voted United's Goal of the Season last week.

Robin received the Barclays Golden Boot trophy after the 5-5 draw at West Brom and will be given £30,000 by Barclays to donate to a charity of his choice.

He also won the award last season after bagging 30 goals for Arsenal, three more than Rooney managed for the Reds.

Robbo signs Scholes for Legends

Just weeks after retiring, Paul Scholes will return to Old Trafford to play in the Red Heart United legends match with Real Madrid at the request of team manager Bryan Robson.

http://www.manutd.com/~/media/EC7DFD5B294A4633AF5E5E256560F492.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,19,591,238

Scholes will join a host of former team-mates including Andy Cole, Jaap Stam and Edwin van der Sar to face the Spanish giants, who will include the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo and Clause Makelele among their ranks.

Having recruited Scholes, who bowed out of football after last weekend's 5-5 draw at West Brom, Robson is relishing the prospect of seeing the United hero play again: “I think Scholsey will love not just being on the pitch with Real Madrid, but also with Zinedine Zidane.

“In the past he has said that Scholsey was the best midfield player in the world, so it will be nice for Paul to play against him again and the rest of the Real Madrid players. We all still love participating in the game and playing for charity is something players enjoy doing.”

Real Madrid travel to Old Trafford hoping to defend a 3-2 victory claimed in the first leg at the Bernabeu last year. And although the match is being played in aid of the MU Foundation, Scholes is keen to turn the deficit around.

“It would be great to win the game,” Paul explained. “But there are some true greats in their team; players who have won World Cups and European Championships.”

“The skill, dedication and passion it takes to be the best in the world is something you never lose. It may be for charity, but it’s going to be a very tough game.”

That sentiment is echoed by the great Zidane, who is only too aware of Scholes' abilties having once described him as 'the complete footballer': “He’s almost untouchable in what he does,” Zizou said.

“I never tire of watching him play. You rarely come across the complete footballer, but Scholes is as close to it as you can get. One of my regrets is that the opportunity to play alongside him never presented itself during my career.”

The Red Heart United legends match will be pre-empted by an opening ceremony in which JLS, Amelia Lily and Tinchy Stryder will all perform a selection of hits, offering a fantastic day out for the whole family.

In keeping with the two clubs’ origins, fans can also try their hand at various Spanish and British themed games whilst sampling traditional cuisine from both nations.

All proceeds from Red Heart United will go to the Manchester United Foundation and will help to fund projects that help young people in disadvantaged areas of Greater Manchester. Tickets are on sale now and are available by visiting www.manutd.com/legendsareback or calling 0161 868 8000 and selecting option 9.

Vidic's pride at title victory

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has expressed his pride at winning the Barclays Premier League title back off neighbours City.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/26FAE739AA514960887A285DFA7ECC61.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=0,11,512,393

The Serbian centre-back feels the league triumph was thoroughly deserved and a fitting send-off for Sir Alex Ferguson, who is retiring after more than 26 years in charge.

“I’m definitely proud to play for this club with these players and to play for the manager as well,” said Vidic on MUTV. “I’ve had a great seven years with the club where we’ve had so much success and we did so again this year so I’m very pleased.

“I think we’ve had 20 players who have scored goals this season which is amazing. It shows how good the spirit is within the team and how hard we pushed to win this title. Obviously, with all the good work on the training ground, we’ve managed that. You saw the players at the parade jumping and singing the songs and we had a good time sharing the title with the fans – they deserve it as they support us all year. It’s been a great comeback after last year and we deserved to win this title.”

Vidic feels Sir Alex's human qualities are on a par with his managerial skills and it is clear he will miss the long-serving boss. "It was a real pleasure to play for the manager," he stated. "It's always difficult to talk about him as he was my manager!

"Now I can express myself and have to say he's a great person who always cares about his players and he's always driving them forward. He believes in them and that's why the players always like to play for him. It's a pleasure to play for this club and for this manager."

The centre-back has made 432 appearances since his debut in 2002 and won his sixth Barclays Premier League medal with the club this season.

David Moyes said: “It is clear for everyone to see that Rio has had one of his best seasons with the club and I think even from the outside you can see what a big character Rio is around the dressing room, so I am delighted he has signed a new contract. I am looking forward to working with him.”

Rio Ferdinand said: “I am delighted to have signed a new contract. Who wouldn’t want to play in this fantastic team in front of 76,000 fans each week? It has been an incredible journey and I am glad it will continue. I can now fully concentrate on my club career which has worked well for me over the past few years.”

Kagawa roots for Dortmund

Shinji Kagawa admits he has been "inspired" by his former team Borussia Dortmund’s run to the Champions League final this season.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/4E84AAD0530D4E5BA79EB5D214538911.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,35,896,367

Dortmund take on Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich, who regained the German title at their expense last month, at Wembley on Saturday evening.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have won plenty of admirers for their pressing, high-tempo game and Japanese star Shinji, who played for them for two seasons between 2010 and 2012, hopes they'll win the European Cup for a second time this weekend.

"I want to play better in the Champions League next season because I’ve been inspired to see Dortmund make it to the final," Kagawa told ManUtd.jp recently. "I was encouraged to know there is a chance for me to be on the big stage with United.

"I’ve followed how they are doing and have kept in touch with some of the players. Each time they progressed in the Champions League, I sent them a text to say congratulations."

Bayern won the league this season with six games to spare, a record in Germany’s top flight, but have failed to win any of their last six league encounters with Dortmund.

"Bayern will find it hard against Dortmund as they haven’t beaten them in the league for three seasons," added Kagawa, who will be watching on TV while on international duty.

"Dortmund will play hard without being over-confident. I expect it will be an exciting match and I hope Dortmund will be European champions."

Pearson pushing on

Ben Pearson has admitted that being forced to miss a large chunk of the 2011/2012 season through illness has actually helped to make him a better player.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/2D048CF5A6EC40D4BC3B7E42F998D181.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,27,600,250

The 2013 Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year was frustrated after being sidelined with glandular fever during an important stage of his development, but he channeled his energy positively to return to action better than ever.

Not only did he impress for Paul McGuinness' Academy side but he forced himself into the Under-21s at the end of the campaign and started the final victory over Tottenham at Old Trafford.

"Last season was hard," the busy midfielder conceded to MUTV. "I started off on the bench a lot and then I got a serious illness that kept me out for four or five months. I got back, worked hard and got into the team. Since then, I've just progressed well. I think the illness really pushed me on even though it set me back a lot. I worked hard and progressed from there.

"I wouldn't have thought for a minute [that I could win the Player of the Year]. I was at home for three months and then in the gym for a while so I'm massively proud to have earned this. There are a lot of first-team players who have won it in the past and I'm hoping to carry that on and be one of them as well."

Pearson is pleased to be rising through the ranks alongside players who have been at the club for most of their formative years.

"A lot of us have been together since we were eight or nine," said the Oldham-born teenager. "We progressed into the Under-16s and all got scholarships. There is a good team spirit - we all work hard for each other and have all got good ability as well."

Coaching eye-opener for Butt

Nicky Butt admits it has been an eye-opening experience returning to the club to work in a coaching capacity alongside Warren Joyce.

http://www.manutd.com/~/media/52E6C88D4EA0487B8CDCC5E65BBDA5E4.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=6,22,486,199

The Treble-winning midfielder saw his young charges lift the Barclays Under-21 Premier League trophy in dramatic circumstances at Old Trafford on Monday and is clearly learning the ropes under Joyce.

Although there is a wealth of talent at that level within the club, Butt has also insisted that making the grade at Old Trafford is just as much about character as raw ability.

"It's been an eye-opener for me this year starting with Warren's Under-21s," he told MUTV. "I'd been at the club a long time and I forgot what the Reserves were like when I was a boy here.

"You have players coming and going and you have to do what is right by the lads when the time comes for them to go out on loan. Warren will speak to the manager and send them out on loan to try and improve them. That's what the club is all about - getting the lads better and better and giving them the chance to play against older players, which we think is good, and it's a learning curve for them.

"I'm enjoying it a lot. I'm inexperienced so I've come along with Warren to learn from him and the other coaches at the club. It's totally different to what I expected and it's hard work. When you do your badges, it's all about how to prepare for the day ahead but it's impossible to do that when it changes just like that. Five minutes before training, you can be three or four players down and it's an eye-opener. You watch how all the coaches adapt so quickly and it's a learning curve for me."

Plenty of those who impressed in the win against Spurs at Old Trafford will be striving to push into David Moyes' first-team plans.

"Playing for United, you have got to have the temperament, personality and be right off the field as well," he explained. "To be a top player for United, you have got to have more than ability. It's about drive, professionalism and you must want it more than anything in the world. Hopefully, we're going to get some players through pretty soon."

Butt is also sure that Sir Alex Ferguson will maintain a healthy level of interest in the younger players at the club despite moving into retirement.

"I think it's very important not to forget that he will still have an impact on the club," insisted the ex-England international. "The manager will be knocking on his door asking for his opinion and he will still be looking at the younger set-up, maybe even more so now he has the time to do that.

"He's still got a massive part to play and nobody should underestimate that. The way he speaks about the new manager means he's very confident in him. We've got to give him all the opportunity we can to become the great manager that Sir Alex was."

Glad that Nicky is enjoying it:).

Kagawa is May's star man

Shinji Kagawa was the clear winner in ManUtd.com’s Player of the Month poll for May, sealing the title with a convincing margin of votes cast by Manchester United fans around the world.

In recognition of his fine form, Shinji received 51% of the votes ahead of second-placed Javier Hernandez, who was slightly behind with 30%. Elsewhere in the poll, Phil Jones was given the nod by 14% of supporters with just 5% opting for Jonny Evans.

Welbeck eyes central role

Danny Welbeck has revealed his long-term aim is to nail down a central striking position for David Moyes' United.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/DAFD8EE9672142D4851C3F01FCBA3D6A.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=6,19,600,239

The forward is likely to be in contention for a centre-forward position in England's upcoming friendlies against Republic of Ireland and Brazil but spent much of last season in a wider role for the Reds.

It limited his goal output to just two, although he did memorably net in the draw at Real Madrid and was a key contributor the title-winning team, performing a number of tactical functions and often offering pace and energy, as well as defending from the front.

Welbeck's other strike was against Stoke at league level but he scored three times for England during the campaign and Sir Alex Ferguson accepted that he always looks likely to hit the target when representing his country and leading the line.

"This season has been the most number of matches I have played and my performances have been a lot more consistent but the goals return has not been good at all," the 22-year-old admitted to MUTV recently.

"I do feel if, I can get a better goals return, I will be flying. I want to be up front and scoring goals.

"If I am playing on the wings, I still want to score more goals but, preferably, I will be up front and scoring goals there."

After winning his first title medal, Welbeck is keen to impress Moyes when the new manager officially takes up the reins this summer.

"It's something words don't really describe," he said about becoming a title winner. "To finally do it is something I'm really proud of.

"We've got a new manager coming in and I'm sure everyone is looking forward to working with him. It's just exciting times and I can't wait to get started."

I do agree with Danny that playing up front is his best position and glad he has mentioned about wanting to improve his goal record.

Manchester United today confirmed the departure of assistant manager Mike Phelan and goalkeeping coach Eric Steele.

David Moyes, who takes over as United boss on 1 July, said: "I would like to put on record the club's thanks for everything Mike and Eric have done. I will be looking to appoint my own members of coaching staff at some point in the future, however, I’d like to take this opportunity to give them both our best wishes for their future careers."

Executive Vice Chairman Ed Woodward said: "I'd like to thank Eric and Mick for the enormous contributions they have made to the success of Manchester United in their time here. Their professionalism, ability and diligence have been a credit to them. They are top class football men and everyone here wishes them well for long and successful careers in the game."

Mike Phelan, a former United player, was promoted by Sir Alex Ferguson to the role of assistant manager in 2008, having served the club as a first-team coach since 2001.

Eric Steele, joined the club in 2008 as first-team goalkeeping coach to fill the void left by Tony Coton who had been forced to retire due to injury.

I am a bit gutted that they are leaving, but wish them well with what they do next.

It was obvious that David Moyes would bring in some of his staff anyway!

David Gill:"As Sir Alex said at his last press conference, that's an issue for David Moyes. I'm confident he will be there next season," said Gill.

"He's a great, great player and the club doesn't want to lose its star players.

"So I'm sure every bit of work is being taken with Wayne and his advisors and the club to make sure that happens.

"I'm not a betting man but I'm confident when I sit at Old Trafford next season I will see Wayne Rooney running out."

Interesting!

Man Utd transfers: David De Gea ‘very happy’ despite Barça link

David De Gea says he is “very happy” at Manchester United despite speculation linking the goalkeeper with a move to Barcelona.

The La Liga champions look set to lose long-term shot-stopper Víctor Valdés, who has indicated his desire to leave Camp Nou before his contract expires in 2014.

Liverpool number one Pepe Reina has been one name touted as a possible successor to Valdés at the Catalan outfit, while United’s De Gea is also a reported target.

But the 22-year-old, who won his first Premier League crown with the Red Devils this term, is not contemplating leaving the 20-time English champions at the moment.

“That would be very difficult,” De Gea is quoted as saying by Sky Sports. “I am very happy at United. Things are going really well, better every day. I am very happy.”

David Moyes is set to take charge of the Red Devils this summer after being confirmed as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor at Old Trafford earlier in May.

The 50-year-old’s first challenge will be resolving Wayne Rooney’s United future, and De Gea believes the England international is happy at the club.

“He looks fine to me, happy,” he continued. “We do not know if he will go, but we hope he stays. He is a very important player for us.”

Glad that he is happy at settled:). DDG had a great season and he has such a bright future ahead at United!

Jones wants full pre-season

Phil Jones has stressed the importance of getting a full pre-season under his belt as he looks ahead to going on tour with Manchester United.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/410075FFD5424C0699B80DDAB8610000.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,41,494,223

The England international is in Roy Hodgson's squad for the forthcoming friendlies against Republic of Ireland (Wednesday) and Brazil (next Sunday, 2 June) and is determined to work hard when he returns to work with the Reds following the summer break.

Injury hampered his progress at the start of last term before he ended the campaign strongly and became something of a regular starter in the final United sides selected by Sir Alex Ferguson.

When asked by Inside United if he was focusing on going on the club's July tour of Thailand, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong, the versatile defender replied: "Definitely. That's important for me for the next season coming up.

"I think I've only had one pre-season and that was in my first season here so it's important I get a full pre-season under my belt. I need to get fitter and stronger and mentally prepare myself for what will be another tough season again." There was some talk that Jones would be considered for England's Under-21 European Championship squad as he is still eligible for that level. However, the former Blackburn youngster is now considered part of the senior set-up and can look back fondly on his appearance in the finals a couple of years ago.

Although Jones impressed alongside Chris Smalling on a personal level at the heart of the defence, Stuart Pearce's side bowed out in the group stages when Czech Republic scored twice late on to steal second spot in the table. Danny Welbeck netted both of his country's goals, including the equaliser against eventual winners Spain.

"It was a great experience in the Under-21s and I loved every minute of it," Jones enthused. "It's a fantastic tournament but we didn't do too well in it. We still had some great players and hopefully they will go on and win it this year."

Wilfried Zaha is United's sole representative in Pearce's squad for the tournament in Israel, which starts on 5 June. England face the host nation, Norway and Italy in Group A.

Berg warning for Scholes

Henning Berg has joked that Paul Scholes needs to curb his tough tackling in the Red Heart United game this coming weekend.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/279254D3FCA94BDCB775648172CF41CC.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=0,0,608,453

The Norwegian will line up again with his former team-mate when Manchester United and Real Madrid's legends teams meet during a family day out to remember at Old Trafford.

Scholes' final competitive fixture in a red shirt was the Reds' 5-5 draw at West Brom when he came on as a substitute and picked up a yellow card for a late challenge. Berg is hoping the midfielder avoids the wrath of the referee on Sunday because his fitness will be much needed against the Spanish aristocrats.

"Scholesy is fit so he will have to play 90 minutes for us," Berg told ManUtd.com. "He’ll just have to be careful not to get a yellow card like he did at West Brom. We want him to last the full match!

"Hopefully, for this Real Madrid game, we will have a few more players in our squad so we won’t all have to play 90 minutes each, like we did against Rangers recently.

"I think it does help if we can change the players a little more than we did in that game but it was still an enjoyment to play, as well as seeing the lads again."

The former defender has turned his hand to management after retiring and is keen to find new employment in England after he was not given the opportunity to prove himself at another of his old clubs, Blackburn, when dismissed after only 57 days in charge.

"I was working in Norway for seven years and, obviously, coming to Blackburn felt like a opportunity," he explained. "I knew it was a gamble and, having had my time cut so short there, I would like to have another go at establishing myself and proving what I can do in this country.

"I would like to get back in. It'd be strange if I hadn't learned anything from Sir Alex Ferguson as I know I was only with him for a few years but I still remember what we were doing, how we behaved and what he did. He has been a big influence in terms of how I have been managing."

Neville excited by new era

Club legend and ambassador Gary Neville speaks to ManUtd.com about United's future under David Moyes and how next season will be a big test for a lot of clubs in the Barclays Premier League…

http://www.manutd.com/~/media/CE783766F12C45498D1D435BFF8F46A8.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=0,25,550,436

Is this going to be one of the biggest pre-seasons we’ve known for a while because of Sir Alex's departure?

I think it will be a huge pre-season for the Premier League. A number of clubs will be wanting to start strongly. Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal… and Spurs will want to do everything they can to hold onto Bale and push forward themselves. So I think we will have one of the most interesting pre-seasons we’ve ever had and probably the most interesting start to a season that we’ll have ever had; there will be new managers at three of the top clubs (United, City, Chelsea) as a minimum.

Will there be extra motivation for our players to impress during pre-season because they are playing for a new manager?

Absolutely. They should see it as a new challenge and an important challenge. I know from speaking to other people in football that since Sir Alex announced his retirement other clubs have already been lifted by the fact he is no longer around. The players should see that as a slight on them and say ‘hang on, do you think we can’t go out on that pitch and perform without our manager?’ That is a challenge in itself and ultimately the players and David Moyes will need to respond to that. It won’t be a bed of roses – there will be ups and downs as there always is and there has been over the last 26 or so years. There will be pressure moments in the coming season when people will say ‘oh, it’s not the same.’ But it’s too easy to say that. Everybody is waiting to see how this post-Sir Alex Ferguson era is going to work. The club have had it before with Sir Matt but everyone here will stick together through it all and the fans will do the same.

Has the current squad been given the credit it deserves for winning the league?

When you’re at Manchester United and you’ve had a manager who has built four great teams – ’94, ’99, 2008 and you can now argue this one that has won the league - people are always going to compare teams and look back; I do it myself sometimes. The most important thing to say about this team is it’s on an upward curve. You’ve got players like De Gea, Rafael, Evans, Smalling, Jones, Cleverley, Welbeck and Hernandez to name eight players who are still young and haven’t reached anywhere near their peak. You’ve also got a mix of players in the middle who are at their peak, then you’ve got the experienced lads at the other end. This team has still not reached its potential. I’m sure there will be additions to the squad this summer so you’re talking about a team on the up. I think Chelsea are going the same way. They’re going to be a big danger next season. I think City have got some manipulating of their squad to do – there will be some toing and froing there. I think United are in a good place. Do they get the credit they deserve? You only get that by repeating success – it’s about winning, winning and winning again.

Sir Alex said at his final press conference that it was always the plan to have the likes of Ryan Giggs, Paul Schoes and Nicky Butt as part of the coaching structure – how important will their experience and influence be going forward?

You can’t fail when you have people who love the football club and who are knowledgeable, intelligent and passionate about the game. And those three characters are all of the above. I’ve watched a lot of football, particularly in the last two years since I finished playing and listened to a lot of people at different clubs and they’re always searching for good types of people to be involved. Ones they can trust and who love and care for a club and that is what you have with Ryan, Paul and Nicky, all of whom have been around the place for so long.

Have you ever been more excited for the start of a new season?

No! There was an incredible end to this season with all the retirements and Sir Alex in particular retiring. But in some ways it wasn’t the most exciting Premier League season we’ve had with United winning the league with four games left. The season before was ridiculous in terms of excitement because of what happened on the last day – you’ll never see anything like that ever again. But I think the quality was just a little bit below that this season, not at United but just generally throughout the league. The German league, as an example, is that little step above us at the moment. We will get back there though. It’s going to be a big summer and a big season - we’ll see players grow and top players will be added to various squads. When you look at the existing squads that the top four or five clubs have and the fact that two or three additions will come into each I think we’ll be talking about them being some of the best teams in Europe again next season. I’m excited because there is a lot more uncertainty about what’s going to happen next season than there ever has been before - next season is going to be a huge challenge for every club in their own way.

random question...is Fabio going to get a chance next season? He is any good?

I like him. He started a CL final after all. I'm one of the "**** baines, Evra and Fabio is enough" gang. Depends if we go for Baines or not. Hopefully not. He could also play RB when Rafa needs a break. Solid player.

I always remember people saying Fabio is the better twin it's just that United had Evra and United had a RB problem so Rafael got the nod most of the time

Haven't seen him at QPR much but, up until this season as Rafael has been outstanding, I always thought Fabio had the nod defensively.
