Morrison has already blown his chances. He'll never be a top player, he doesn't have the right attitude now he'll never have it.

Heard Morrison stole from Rio? If he put his head down this time in 2-3 years he could be a millionaire and buy all the watches he wanted

I couldn't care less what he does outside of the pitch he is ****ing amazing on the pitch and the only chance he has been given was against Aldershot and he was the best player on the pitch. Ideally i would have loaned him to a team away from Manchester for the season to get him away from the gangs etc and show him how good his life is but sadly Fegie would rather leave our talented players to rot

PS im going to the game 2moz and if i see Park and Giggs in the starting 11 im gonna ****ing lose it.

Seriously i know for sure you guys don't watch youth team football becuase you wouldnt be talking about getting rid to these rubbish teams when he is quite clearly the best young English player by a distance

It's ****ing ridiculous that we are willing to pay sonething like 20mil for Jack Rodwell PMSL when we have Ravel and Pog who are 10x the player he is.

Nani not Rooney should take pens. No exageration i always feel like Rooney will miss his pen

Glad United won today to go joint top:).

Rooney had a frustrating match, had a few chances but needs to work on his penalties after having yet another one saved.

Glad to see the Ginger Ninja aka Scholesy score:hugesmile:.

Welbeck and Carrick scored good goals too!

Valencia, Evans, Carrick, Welbeck and Scholes all stood out for me in the match but it was a good performance from the match.

I hope the injury Welbeck picked up isn't bad and hopefully Smalling, Jones and Anderson can recover from the knocks they had picked up this week and can be fit to play in the next game.

All this Ravel Morrison speculation is just annoying, the guy is talented but his off the pitch antics aren't good and the people he is hanging around with.

He will regret not making it at United.

Some criticism RE Scholes return and I did criticise a few mistakes he made against Man City but he soon got back into his stride and he is steadying the ship in United Midfield until we hopefully buy some CM in the Summer.

Seeing Carrick and Scholes playing together again is jizz!:joker:

Carrick has played well for a long time. People just choose to ignore the fact he's now a holding player, and doesn't get forward often. His job is to break up play, and allow others to create.

Antonio Valencia's wing-play masterclass wowed United fans around the world at the weekend - and won him the Man of the Match award on ManUtd.com.

The Ecuadorian international, clearly revelling in his return to the right wing, received almost two thirds of the votes cast after the champions' 3-0 win over Bolton Wanderers. His match statistics suggest this was well deserved - he created five chances for his team-mates and delivered a dozen crosses while 91 per cent of his passes found a player in a red shirt.

A United fan posting on our message board as 'Giggsy The True Midfield Magician' commented: "This was probably Valencia's best game in a United shirt. He was immense against Bolton. He is actually such an unselfish player, always looking for the pass. He only shoots when there is no other option. Since November he has really picked up his game."

Paul Scholes was the runner-up in our poll with 18 per cent of the votes, following his goalscoring return to the Old Trafford turf. Meanwhile another accomplished performance by his central-midfield partner Michael Carrick (9 per cent) edged out Danny Welbeck (6pc) and Nani (2pc) in the chase for third place.

Nemanja Vidic has warned Manchester United's Premier League rivals that they will be stronger in the second half of the season.

United trail leaders Manchester City by three points and were knocked out of the Champions League before Christmas.

But the United captain believes the club are starting to overcome injury problems that have hit the club.

Vidic, ruled out for the rest of the season, told the BBC: "How we finish is most important. We will be better."

It's not bad for the city of Manchester to have two teams competing for the title - as long as we finish in first place

United have been hit by injuries in defence, with Rio Ferdinand, Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones having all missed games over the past month.

The Old Trafford club failed to overtake City after suffering successive top-flight defeats against Blackburn and Newcastle in December.

But Vidic, 30, told BBC North West Tonight: "I'm positive. We've had problems with injuries but it seems all the players are getting back and getting fitter.

"We will be better than we were in the first half of the season.

"It's not bad for the city of Manchester to have two teams competing for the title - as long as we finish in first place."

Fellow defender Smalling, 22, believes only Sir Alex Ferguson's side can take heart from the fact they are challenging for the title despite a number of injuries this season.

Smalling, now fully recovered from tonsillitis, told the club's website: "We've probably had more injuries than any other club in the league.

"Not many teams have lost players of the calibre of Nemanja and Darren Fletcher for such lengthy periods.

"And yet we're still going strong, we're still challenging for the lead."

England defender Smalling returned in the FA Cup victory against Manchester City then sat out Saturday's win over Bolton, but hopes to play at Arsenal on Sunday.

"People were starting to write us off," he added. "Instead of crumbling we went to City and beat them on their home turf, even if we made hard work of it in the second half.

"Winning that game showed a lot of character."

Meanwhile, United full-back Ritchie de Laet has returned to Old Trafford after his season-long loan move to Norwich was terminated five months early.

Manchester United winger Ashley Young claims he is making good progress on his recovery from a knee injury.

Young joined Old Trafford from Aston Villa in the summer for a fee believed to be around £18 million, but has been out of action since December 21 after sustaining a knee problem in the 5-0 win over Fulham.

The England international may not be back in first-team action until February, with Sir Alex Ferguson claiming he’d be out for another month on January 8, but Young is optimistic over his recovery.

Speaking at the Betfair presents Man Utd live webcast at Old Trafford, Young said: "It's going well. I've been in the gym most days but it's getting there and hopefully I'll be back soon.”

Young has been buoyed by the start to his Old Trafford career and claims that the standard required to compete for a place at Manchester United has improved his ability.

"I'm enjoying it," he said. "From the minute I stepped into the building, I was welcomed with open arms by everybody in the squad.

"All the staff have been brilliant and to play alongside so many world-class players was always a dream for me.

"It brings your game on and you go up to another level. You experience that straight away. There's competition for places all around the team so you've always got to be on your toes.

"I think my game has come on. I've added different things to my game. Obviously, we're playing a different style than it was at Aston Villa and I've had to adapt.

"When I've gone away with England and the likes of Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick, I've got to know the boys there and how they play."

The midfielder is also eagerly anticipating the trip to the Emirates to face Arsenal on Sunday, even though it remains extremely unlikely that he’ll be able to play any part.

United currently sit second in the Premier League, three points behind leaders Manchester City, while Arsene Wenger's lie in fifth, four points off a Champions League place.

Dimitar Berbatov's agent has insisted the Manchester United striker is not going anywhere in this month's transfer window.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed the club will invoke a clause in the striker's contract, which expires at the end of the season, that will extend his deal by a further 12 months.

Yet there is gossip that a host of clubs, including Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen, are ready to test United's resolve to keep the 30-year-old with bids of around £8million.

But Berbatov's agent, Emile Danchev, said: "Usually I don't comment on speculation. But the only thing that I can say is that at this moment the eventual transfer of Berbatov to another club is not on the agenda."

Leverkusen, who sold Berbatov to Tottenham in July 2006, confirmed that they have no interest in re-signing their former striker.

Chief executive Wolfgang Holzhauser said: "I read that Dimitar flew over to Frankfurt and that we were there for him to negotiate a transfer.

"That was interesting news to me.

"This is nothing we are looking forward to at this point in time - and I would also say we are not after him in the coming summer."

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has dismissed suggestions that Danny Welbeck is refusing to sign a new contract with the club.

Welbeck was reported this week to be stalling on a new deal in a similar fashion to Paul Pogba and Ravel Morrison, with the 21-year-old supposedly angling for a £60,000-per-week deal.

However Ferguson has moved to quash rumours that there is an issue with the striker who has scored eight goals in all competitions this season.

"There is no issue," Ferguson told Sky Sports.

"We know the situation well with Danny. There is nothing to worry about there."

The United boss also had encouraging words regarding the fitness of injured duo Ashley Young and Tom Cleverley.

He said: "They are doing a good running programme at the moment and their fitness levels are good."

On Cleverley, he added: "I am hopeful in 10 days' time, he will be playing football on the training side of it.

"That is the plan anyway, unless there is any recurrence. We can kick on and then it depends how he does in training.

"His fitness levels should be fine and if that is correct, he could cope right away. You are talking about a week."

Ferguson also had positive news on the fitness of defensive duo Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, with both defenders expected to be available for selection on Sunday against Arsenal.

"Phil and Chris will be fit," he said.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes Javier Hernandez is finally ready for lift-off.

The Mexican was one of the stand-out successes of last season, arriving as a £7million unknown but ending the campaign as a player with predatory instincts whose goals helped propel the Red Devils to their record 19th league title.

Unfortunately for the 23-year-old, this term has proved to be a bit of a trial.

After missing the first part of United's pre-season tour of the United States as he recovered from his commitments at the Gold Cup, where he finished top scorer, Hernandez eventually linked up with his team-mates in New Jersey.

Yet he ended his first day of training in hospital after taking a nasty bang on the head and since then, he has struggled for any continuity.

Hernandez made his re-appearance against Tottenham in August but has since taken another blow on the head and suffered an ankle injury.

It has restricted him to just six goals this season and, currently, he is being overlooked in favour of Danny Welbeck.

However, Ferguson has noticed a general improvement in standards and believes Hernandez is now ready to show the form that made him such a crowd favourite.

"Javier has had his issues this year," said Ferguson.

"He had that concussion, then he had another head knock and then an ankle injury.

"He has not got the season going yet.

"But he is looking well now and his training has been fantastic. That is a bonus because you want variations in the striking department anyway.

"And if we get Hernandez back into the frame what an addition he can be. We know the goals he can score."

Yet Hernandez must first squeeze his way past Welbeck, who, despite his own injury woes, has been in fine form.

The 21-year-old has scored eight times and produced all-round form that has led to him becoming established in Fabio Capello's England squad.

Ferguson has dismissed talk of problems in negotiations over a new contract and instead concentrated on the physical development of a player he doesn't feel will fully mature for another couple of years.

"Danny has had a couple of injuries this season but he is still growing into himself," said Ferguson.

"He has got a bit to fill out yet, which is an amazing thing to say because he is such a big lad.

"But in two years you will see a different human specimen, I am sure of that. He seems to be growing all the time."

Wayne Rooney has hailed Antonio Valencia's return to top form.

Valencia had endured a difficult start to the campaign, missing the entire pre-season and the first month of competitive action after suffering an ankle injury during the Copa America.

The winger then ended up playing right-back to cover for Manchester United's defensive injury problems.

However, ahead of Sunday's crucial trip to Arsenal, the 26-year-old is hitting the mark again. And Rooney is delighted.
'Antonio has been playing brilliantly,' said the United striker. 'He is back to his best and when he is like that he is so difficult to defend against.

'It is great for the forwards because he is so good at delivering the ball into the box quickly.'
Valencia's contribution helped United make a speedy return to winning ways after their unexpected setbacks against Blackburn and Newcastle over Christmas.

Before that, the Red Devils had been breathing heavily down the necks of leaders Manchester City after recovering from the 6-1 derby defeat by taking 25 points from a possible 27.

They are now in the tricky position of playing catch-up, right at the start of a run of fixtures that sees them tackle four major rivals in their next six league games, in addition to next weekend's FA Cup fourth round clash with Liverpool.

Even Sir Alex Ferguson concedes it will be the period that will define United's season. And Rooney is just glad the Red Devils have thrown off the mid-season shackles attached to prevent a repeat of their derby debacle.

'The chances are coming again now,' he said. 'Those games when we were winning 1-0 were really important. We had to defend and be solid as a team.

'Now we are starting to score a few more goals again.'
Injuries are starting to ease too. Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are due to return for the Arsenal encounter, whilst Tom Cleverley and Ashley Young should be back in a matter of weeks from their long-term problems.

The returns are being welcomed, as is news of a potential bid for Crystal Palace's England Under 21 full-back Nathanial Clyne, who is out of contract in the summer, because Nemanja Vidic and Darren Fletcher have both been ruled out for the season. But Smalling concedes the constant changing has been disruptive.

'Nobody could have foreseen all the injuries we have had,' said the England defender. 'At the start of the season we had good numbers and good quality.

Dream team: Valencia and Rooney have combined for many of the striker's goals for United
'With so many injuries, the form was bound to dip once or twice. But we are all pulling together and there have been plenty of good results.'
It is the bad ones that attract the attention though. Should United suffer their fourth defeat of the season this weekend and find themselves six points adrift of Manchester City, who take on Tottenham a couple of hours earlier, the critics will be out again.
Such criticism is a new experience for Smalling, who won a Premier League winners' medal in his first season with the Old Trafford outfit.

However, he understands the demands of playing for such a huge club and the reaction that comes with failure.

'I can understand the criticism because we are behind City in the league, and the expectations of this club - from both inside and out - are massive,' he said. 'If we are not on top, everyone is asking why, and rightly so.

'Finishing second with more points that we collected last season won't make us feel any better about ourselves. The only objective is to win the league.'

So we're near Sunday. I am so hoping United can get a win at the Emirates vs Arsenal, so obvious that Arsenal will be up for it against us and will play well but a shame that they could not be bothered last week vs Swansea.

What's wrong with Giggs and Park? Giggs still plays brilliantly. Again he was great today. He skips past players much younger than him with ease. There is nothing wrong with Giggs whatsoever. Remember last season, without him, we'd of lacked considerably creativity wise. Don't forget when he totally dominated Chelsea's midfield towards the end of last season.

And Park is played as a defensive winger, and does his job. And if Park had played today, I wouldn't of been surprised. He's just the man for big games, and has scored against Arsenal quite a few times.

At bbfan1991, very interesting read. No wonder United want rid. Just a chav it appears.

'At United they will tell you that, goodness knows, they have tried everything. Or, at least, until the past few weeks when the secretary, John Alexander, rang his agent to tell him he should look for another club. By that point, one of the coaches had simply stopped talking to Morrison. His mother went to pick him up from training one day and was told, in the bluntest terms, that her son was a waste of time and not worth the hassle.'

That paragraph particularly stuck out to me. 'One of the coaches had simply stopped talking to Morrison'. He reminds me of the kid at school, who throws paper aeroplanes and struggles to write his own name.

His attitude stinks. I for one, hope he never makes it (unless his attitude changes dramatically of course). A person like that doesn't deserve to play for Manchester United.

Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan admits they are stretched by injuries as they bid to overhaul Manchester City in the title race.

But Phelan remains defiant despite the string of knocks suffered by key players in Sunday's 2-1 win at Arsenal.

Phil Jones tore ankle ligaments, Nani left the stadium wearing a protective boot, and Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick and Patrice Evra also suffered knocks.

"We're not in the greatest state that we could possibly be in," said Phelan.

"However, we can call on all our experiences and resources we have at this football club and we'll have to do that in the coming weeks."

Nani reportedly spent the train journey back to Salford with his injured limb raised and with his foot still protected, but United are unable to assess the damage until swelling has cleared up over the next couple of days.

Rooney limped out of the stadium, Carrick tweaked a hamstring and Evra suffered a head knock.

United were already without Rio Ferdinand, Anderson, Tom Cleverley, Ashley Young, Michael Owen and long-term absentees Darren Fletcher and Nemanja Vidic going into Sunday's match.

But, despite now facing a fixture list swelled by FA Cup and Europa League matches, the United assistant manager is optimistic that the versatile Jones can return to the side sooner rather than later, because of his sheer determination.

"He's that type of lad," Phelan told BBC Radio Manchester. "His character's very good in and around the place.

"He's disappointed that, over the last few weeks, he seems to have limped around the football field quite a bit but he manages to recover, so we're optimistic he can do the same again."

United's win at the Emirates kept them within three points of league leaders City.

But their next date is with Liverpool this Saturday for their FA Cup fourth-round tie at Anfield, where United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has asked for "positive, witty and loud" support from the travelling fans.

WAYNE ROONEY has warned Manchester City: We'll hit top gear now the finishing line is in sight.

Premier League champions Manchester United currently trail table-toppers City by three points.

But Rooney has taken heart from their recent wobble. The England striker said: "We relish this part of the season.

"Once we get into the New Year we can see a bit of light at the end of the tunnel. Every game is massive and we don't want to be dropping points.

"But I always feel we are at our best around now because we can see the end of the season and that there are trophies there to be won.

"That's why we stay focused and, more often than not, we're always there at the end."

Rooney, 26, added: "We understand and know what we have to do.

"We need to prepare ourselves the best way we can and hopefully get the results we need."

Fears have been raised that Manchester United star Nani could be sidelined for a number of weeks with a foot injury.

The Portuguese winger, one of United's most creative forces, limped out of the 2-1 win at Arsenal on Sunday after taking a blow to the foot and travelled home in a protective boot.

Swelling on his foot has resulted in a delay in having a scan, with it being feared he has suffered a metatarsal injury. There has been no word from United on the issue, but the Daily Mirror is claiming he could be sidelined for two months.

It seems certain that whatever the extent of the injury, Nani will miss Manchester United's FA Cup clash with Liverpool at the weekend.

Rio Ferdinand is also doubtful for the trip to Anfield with a back problem, but Phil Jones' ankle injury is not as bad as feared and he could figure.

Gutted if Nani is out for that long:(.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson could be without Wayne Rooney, Phil Jones, Rio Ferdinand and Nani for Saturday's FA Cup fourth-round tie at Anfield.

Rooney, Jones and Nani picked up ankle knocks during Sunday's Premier League victory away to Arsenal, while Ferdinand expected to play in that match but was ruled out with a recurrence of a back problem.

Reports on Friday suggest that Rooney has been unable to take part in training all week - although his problem is not expected to rule him out of action in the long-term.

United have struggled with injuries all season: Ashley Young and Tom Cleverley are both thought to be at least a week away from returning, Anderson is sidelined for a fortnight and Darren Fletcher and Nemanja Vidic are out for the season.

Meanwhile, Ferguson called on both sets of fans to keep a lid on their tempers ahead of the potentially explosive clash at Anfield. "It's a massive game for both clubs," he said. "There's a tremendous profile around it. Steven Gerrard said it's the responsibility of the players to behave properly and I expect my players to. And also the fans. Both sets of fans need to make sure we're talking about the game and nothing else."

Manchester: Alex Ferguson has fired a warning to his Manchester United squad that the club will be "dead" if any player becomes more important than him.

The Scot's 25 years in charge have seen many big players leave the club after falling out with the manager, including Jaap Stam and David Beckham.

And Ferguson has recently had to shrug off rumours of a private falling out between him and star striker Wayne Rooney, after the England forward was fined over the festive period for breaking a curfew.

The legendary boss remains as keen as ever to stamp his authority at Old Trafford and believes that a managerial reign as long as his will never be repeated.

“I said it to the directors 15 years ago, maybe more than 15 years ago: You have to remember that the most important person at Manchester United is the manager," the United boss was quoted as saying by the Mirror.

“The minute a footballer becomes more important than the manager, your club is dead - the history of this club goes down the drain. I am the most important man at Manchester United. It has to be that way.”

Ferguson said he had a “great relationship” with the Glazer family, despite the owners' having alienated many supporters.

“They never bother me. They never ask questions, they never phone me and they never interfere with my job. I am in a privileged position,” he said.

Managers have much shorter reigns at clubs in the modern game and the Scot believes that a spell in charge like his own will not be repeated.

He also admitted that he has had to adapt to the ever-changing football landscape during his time in charge at Old Trafford.

“I don’t think anyone else will (stay at a club for 25 years), I’m a phenomenon,” said Ferguson.

“I have certainly mellowed. There’s no question about that. It’s a more fragile human being that I’m dealing with today than 25 years ago,” he added. “They are cocooned by modern ideas, modern parents, modern agents, and their own image at times. It’s a different world for me, so I have to change myself to adapt to that. I have changed because of these things.”

Paul Scholes has admitted he missed playing for Manchester United 'more than he thought' following his retirement U-turn earlier this month.

The 37-year-old has signed a deal that runs until the end of the season and has made three appearances for United since going back on his decision to quit football last summer.

Scholes conceded his day-to-day involvement at United, which included training with the reserve side, fuelled his desire to return to playing.

"I missed it more than I thought. At the end of last season, I thought it was the right time to finish," Scholes told MUTV.

"Ask any player who has finished, they will all miss it for a period of time. I missed it and decided to give it another go."

"After coming in to Carrington for the last three or four months and still seeing people and still doing a bit of training with the reserves, I was missing it more than I thought I would."

Scholes also felt his decision to return hinged on the thoughts of manager Sir Alex Ferguson, but the midfielder was buoyed by the United boss' response when he revealed his intentions.

"I went to see the manager and said that I wanted to come back playing. I didn't know what he would say. I didn't know what his reaction would be. Thankfully, it was a positive one," he said.

"It's nice to be back. The first two or three days took a bit of getting used to but I'm back into it now and enjoying every day."

Pleased for him and it is good for the club he is back playing again:).

Manchester United have agreed to send a team to play against an Irish League XI for Harry Gregg's testimonial in May.

Gregg survived the Munich Air Disaster in 1958 and won widespread praise for his bravery after staying with the burning plane to help passengers to safety.

Now 79, the former Northern Ireland international had a 10-year stint with the Red Devils, making 247 appearances.

A £23,000 arrival from Doncaster in 1957, his only honour was an FA Cup runners-up medal in the emotional defeat to Bolton in 1958, just after the tragedy. Gregg missed the win over Leicester five years later due to injury.

Although there has been no official announcement, it is anticipated Gregg's game will take place at Windsor Park on May 15.

Please don't play De Gea Fergie

bbfan1991
30-01-2012, 04:21 PM
Roy Keane has weighed in on the debate surrounding David de Gea's recent performances, with the Manchester United legend admitting that of the goals conceded so far, he believes some of them have been 'shocking' at the hands of the keeper.

De Gea made the move to Old Trafford last summer for a reported fee of £17.8 million. The stopper was always aware that pressure would be high to provide an apt replacement for the retired Edwin van der Sar, and at just 20 years old at the time, it was expected that he would take some time to adapt to the Premier League.

And though De Gea has shown moments of brilliance that prove why Ferguson saw him as a top signing this season, the youngster has also made mistakes that have proven costly for United. And Saturday was yet another example of goalkeeping mistakes being lethal for the Red Devils as they lost 2-1 to bitter rivals Liverpool.

Keane believes that De Gea's performances will be very unsettling for rest of the United squad, with his position particularly important as the side push to take pole position from Manchester City.

"De Gea looked a bit nervous," Keane said after the Liverpool game, as reported by Manchester Evening News.

"When you have a nervous goalkeeper it can go through the whole team. He looked really nervous.

"He has to stick his chest out and say, I am number one today, I am going to produce a big performance.

"Goalkeeper is the most important position at Manchester United. That is why United got Edwin van der Sar at 34. United are missing that experience and presence.

"United will be kicking themselves. They have conceded shocking goals.

"You work all week on your tactics and your team shape. It was a direct kick (for the winner). Carroll is 6ft 4in, you expect him to win the header but Patrice Evra should smell the danger.

"I think he gets caught out in a lot of the bigger games. He should tuck in. He has let Kuyt get the wrong side of him. I bet the boy couldn't believe his luck."

It seems every pundit in English football has at some point turned on De Gea this season, though Ferguson has proven his critics wrong by having faith in his youngsters many times before.

And though Keane believes the squad might be unsettled, Michael Owen has lept to de Gea's defence on Twitter, insisting that the United players are behind their young keeper and believe he will become more consistent as time goes on.

"Don't agree with all this negativity towards De Gea," Owen wrote.

"Admittedly he has made a couple of mistakes this season but listening to some people you would think he had a nightmare. I'm not having either goal was his fault.

"The problem is, once you get labelled, mud sticks and now any tiny mistake is magnified. Other keepers make similar mistakes and nothing gets said.

"The ball was on the six-yard box for the first goal. He has to go for it. He also needs to watch the flight of the ball.

"There are then six players in front of him. There is nothing he could do. In my opinion two bad goals to give away but to blame everything on the keeper is totally wrong. The lad will be a top keeper, he is only young.

"Harsh to blame him for everything. The fans know he needs their support, his confidence needs boosting. I'm sure he will repay that support for years to come."

With that in mind, De Gea's performance against Stoke this weekend will be closely watched, with the game a must win for the club to stay in close hunt for the title.

Manchester United have completed the deadline-day signing of defensive prospect Frederic Veseli from neighbours Manchester City.

The 19-year-old centre-back, who plays for Switzerland Under 20s, will link up with Warren Joyce's Reserves after making his name in City's Academy side.

A versatile, cultured defender who is comfortable on the ball, Veseli arrived at Eastlands in 2008 from Lausanne Sport in his homeland, and has been tipped to eventually develop into a central midfielder.

"I am very happy and it is an honour to sign for Manchester United," the Swiss starlet said. "I can’t wait to get started, to work hard and do everything I can to help the team. I am looking forward to showing everybody what I can do on the pitch."

Veseli captained his country to victory in the Under 17s World Cup in 2009 and got his first taste of senior football during City's pre-season tour of North America last summer.

He'll now be looking to settle quickly at Old Trafford and impress for the Reds' second string in a bid to earn a first-team chance.

"I am very thankful to Sir Alex Ferguson for bringing me to such a great club," he added. "Manchester United has a long history of younger players coming through and hopefully I can follow and do the same."

Good luck to him at United:). He is on Twitter @fredericveseli.

Yeah, because Rooney is guilty of witness intimidation, coaches don't speak to him, and he's a part of a mob.

Oh wait, actually, he isn't.

Javier Hernandez says Tuesday was a great day for Manchester United as they go in search of a 20th league title.

The Mexican got on the scoresheet as United beat Stoke 2-0 to go level on points at the top of the table, with Manchester City losing 1-0 at Everton.

Whilst the 24-year-old says the results might not matter come May, he admits it was a good night for the Red Devils.

He told MUTV: "Against Stoke we did a great job against a very difficult team. It was a great night for Manchester United, with City dropping points and us winning against a very difficult team.

Will it be very significant [in the title race]? Maybe not, but it was a very good night for Manchester United fans."

With Wayne Rooney in the stands, Hernandez took his first ever penalty for United, which he duly converted.

And the Mexican says he would be happy to continue taking the kicks, even when Rooney comes back.

He added: "There are a lot of players here who can take penalties. Sometimes it's Wazza, sometimes it's Ryan Giggs. Today it was me and Berbatov.

"I take them for Mexico and I'll be ready if [United] ask me again. If they want me to shoot one, I'll shoot."

Darron Gibson has vowed to make his spectacular winner against Manchester City the first of many for his new club.

The Everton midfielder admits his first goal for Everton couldn't have come against better opposition that his former club Manchester United's bitter local rivals.

But he has promised that is only the start as he reaches peak match fitness and begins to show the Goodison support exactly what he is made of.

"My last goal was the Champions League semi against Schalke, It was a while ago, I haven't got one for a long time really," he admitted.

"So I was certainly very pleased to score against City, and I'm just delighted to get my first goal. I was a bit frustrated in the last few games because I didn't really manage many shots, but I'm buzzing it came against City.

"I'm gradually getting into things now. I think my fitness has a lot to do with that. I wasn't match fit when I arrived, but it's coming. I'm getting fitter and fitter with every game. Hopefully I can kick on from the goal against City."

Gibson is revelling in the opportunity he has been given at Goodison, and despite his obvious affection for former club United, he admits it is a major boost to his career to be playing every week.

"It is nice to know I've got a chance of playing every week, rather than knowing that I haven't got a chance to be playing to be honest!" he admitted.

"I'm here to work as hard as I can and to pay Everton back for playing me. They are giving me games, and I am going to do as well I can."

Even as he received the acclaim as Everton's match-winner in the post-match interview, Gibson couldn't divert his eyes from the highlights of his former club being beamed on the TV in the corner.

And he admitted he feels a special sense of delight that his first goal came against City, allowing him to do a massive favour to his Old Trafford pals.

"I'm an Everton player but it does mean that little bit more it was against City, although really I'm just glad we got the three points," he explained.

"I haven't checked my phone yet but I'm sure it will be packed with texts. I'm sure there'll be a few from United. I've got a lot of mates there and I'm closest to Jonny Evans and Wazza. I'm sure there will be a few calls from them."

"I didn't know the United fans were singing my name, but it's good they were. City are a good team, so it's a great feeling that our gameplan against them worked."

Good on Gibbo:), he deserves to do well at Everton and have more chance of playing.

Ryan Giggs is ready to open talks on a new one-year contract after seeing Paul Scholes’ successful U-turn from retirement.

The deal would take the veteran beyond his 39th birthday and 900 appearances for United.

But after seeing team-mate Scholes realise the error of his ways by retiring prematurely last season, Giggs does not want to repeat that mistake.

“I thought he’d retired too early - a lot of people did,” said the Welshman. “He was still the best in training with the reserves, so he obviously felt he could still do it.

“Nobody was going to disagree with that and it was a massive boost when we found out he was coming back before the Manchester City game.”

Giggs is already the most decorated player in the history of English football with an incredible 12 Premier League titles and two Champions League triumphs.

He remains a pivotal part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s team, making 21 appearances already this season. He needs three more to take him to 900 for the club – but he is more interested in winning more silverware.

“The big one was overtaking Sir Bobby Charlton,” he said. “But now I’ll just see where it takes me.

“We’ll sit down pretty soon and see what we want to do but at the moment I feel good and I want to carry on.”

Giggs is hoping to make it 13 titles this season and believes United are heading into a crucial stage of the season with Chelsea on Sunday followed by games against Liverpool and Tottenham.

“We have shown reasonable form and if we can get good results in those kinds of games, confidence will be sky high,” he said.

“We know that it’s a tough run, but those are the games you want to be playing in.

“We are not quite at the make-or-break part of the season, but it is an important time, and we know that if we win those games, then we’ll be in good shape and good form going into the run-in.

“We know what’s ahead of us and what we have to do.”

Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United can take confidence from the way they came back from 3-0 down against Chelsea to win a point.

Jonny Evans' own goal put Chelsea ahead by the interval and two rapid goals after the half-time break from Juan Mata and David Luiz put the home side in control.

Yet United's famed ability to fight back was again on display as Rooney scored a brace of penalties before substitute Javier Hernandez headed in a late equaliser.

However, Rooney was disappointed United lost vital ground in the title race with neighbours Manchester City.

Accepted

"It's two points lost," Rooney told Sky Sports 1.

"We understand that, but after being 3-0 down - the City players at home must have liked that - we enjoyed the way we fought back.

"A lot of teams might have put their heads down and accepted defeat, but we never put our heads down."

Confident

Rooney claimed he did not see the penalties, but was confident of converting both.

"The two (penalties) we got I'm not sure. Thankfully the referee gave them," he said.

"I was always confident. I waited for the keeper to make his move and put it the other way."

Van der Sar - Man Utd's David de Gea must deal with tough start
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar insists David de Gea has to "deal" with his tough start to life at the club.

De Gea, 21, was signed in an £18.3m deal from Atletico Madrid last summer following Van der Sar's retirement.

The Spaniard has attracted criticism after struggling to adapt in his first months in the Premier League.

"He has to deal with that. They paid a lot of money for him and he has to come through that," Van der Sar said.

"It's always difficult if you're coming into a new club and new league, especially the English one. It's a very demanding one and can be very tough."

De Gea's ongoing problems, coupled with Anders Lindegaard being out for a month with an ankle problem, has led to some speculation that Sir Alex Ferguson could ask Van der Sar to follow Paul Scholes out of retirement.

Former Ajax, Juventus and Fulham goalkeeper Van der Sar, 41, called time on his career at the end of last season, bringing an impressive six-year spell at United to a close.

Ferguson has dismissed any suggestion that the Dutchman, who has described Lindegaard's performances this season as "magnificent", could return to Old Trafford as a player.

Hard act to follow
Edwin van der Sar won four Premier League titles, one Champions League and two League Cups in his six years at Old Trafford.
Van der Sar also maintains that, while he is not surprised to see Scholes back at United, he has no intention of reconsidering retirement.

He added: "I got a few text messages from friends saying, 'What about you?' I'm quite happy at the moment. There's no doubt in my mind.

"I was at (United's training ground) Carrington and Scholes was watching a training session and I said 'So, how do you like it?'.

"He said, 'Not really. I miss it'. He was still there doing his work as an assistant coach with the reserve team so it was probably a little bit easier to get back in."

Van der Sar believes his old club have shown their character since the turn of the year.

Ferguson's side are two points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City and Van der Sar believes his old team can win a fifth title in six seasons.

He said: "I think United have had a reasonably strong, competitive last month.

"I see the qualities United have and the tactics Ferguson can deploy. Hopefully that can be enough for another title."

EVDS making lots of good points:).

Patrice Evra believes Manchester United have shown great character to overcome an injury-hit season and still compete with Manchester City for the Premier League title.
Sir Alex Ferguson was without first-team regulars Phil Jones, Nani and Chris Smalling for United’s 3-3 draw with Chelsea on Sunday, while the Red Devils boss lost Nemanja Vidić to a season-ending knee injury last December.

“I don’t know what is happening, I think someone is doing some voodoo on us!” Evra told United’s website. “It’s amazing how many injuries we’ve had. I see many teams complaining about the injuries they have but, for us, it has been amazing.

“To lose a player like Nemanja Vidić for the season yet we’ve coped with that. I think to get so close to Manchester City, given the injuries we have had, shows we have really good spirit in the team.

“That’s the most important thing and that’s the culture of the club. No matter what happens, we don’t like to have excuses. I just say ‘well done’ to every player but the job is not finished. The most important part is still to come.”

Evra is confident United can retain their Premier League crown despite a difficult month ahead, with games against Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, while they also have a Europa League clash with Ajax to prepare for.

“There’s still a long time to go,” he continued. “I always say the league is a marathon not a sprint.

“Next we have Liverpool and then the Europa League against Ajax. I think that’s why we play for Manchester United because we want to play in those type of games. We have to make sure we show that now on the pitch.

“Every game is difficult but we just have to say to ourselves we have to win all of them. I know it’s not easy but if you want to win the league, you have to win these sort of games.”

Evra gets what United is about, however, he needs to work on his defensive side of play more;).

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has demanded a hardline stance on any new incident of racism in football.

Ferguson, whose side play rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford this weekend, has been shocked by the re-emergence of the issue of racism in the game, with one of his own players on the receiving end this season.

Reds forward Luis Suarez was found guilty of racially abusing United defender Patrice Evra during a fixture back in October and subsequently served an eight-match ban.

Other incidents have seen fans arrested after allegations they racially abused players, while Chelsea defender John Terry is to stand trial in July to deny a charge that he racially abused QPR's Anton Ferdinand, brother of United's Rio Ferdinand.

Ferguson told CNN: "I don't understand at all where it's coming from. This is a moment where we have to take stock and we should do something about it if it's surfacing again, and be really hard and firm on any form or shape of racism.

"There have been a couple of examples recently which is not good. In 2012, you can't believe it. It was obvious maybe 20 years ago and the improvements have been for everyone to see. I have had some fantastic black players, absolutely magnificent black players, and with every one of them I have enjoyed my working relationship with them."

David De Gea intends to remain at Manchester United for "many years" and is determined to be remembered as one of the club's top goalkeepers.

De Gea, 21, signed for United from Atletico Madrid last summer for £18.9 million, but has failed to impress at Old Trafford following a number of high-profile errors.

The Spaniard, though, has shown flashes of quality, the most recent of which came at Stamford Bridge on Sunday when he made a fine late stop to deny Chelsea in their 3-3 draw.

De Gea said: "I have every intention of spending many years at Manchester United. I want to go on to become a great United keeper and to earn and deserve respect. I want to help United make history."

Of his transition from La Liga to the Premier League, De Gea said: "I think it is fair to say La Liga and the Premier League are the two best leagues in the world.

"But it's well known the style of play here is rather more physical and, as a goalkeeper, you have to be right on it. You have to be attentive all through the match.

"The players coming at you can shoot from any angle and from distance. You need to be aware you might get a shot from distance at any time.

"Having said that, there's a lot of crosses from the sides, a lot of high balls and aerial play. So you have to be able to get in there and block, interfere and stop shots being taken.

"I knew when I was coming to United this was the style of play. So I was pretty much ready and I was already confident."

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has set his sights on a goalscoring return to action against Liverpool this weekend.

The 22-year-old England international was absent during Sunday's epic 3-3 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and has been one of a number of defensive casualties in a season of woe for the Red Devils on the injury front.

However, Sir Alex Ferguson's side remain in the fight for the title and are just two points behind 'noisy neighbours' Manchester City going into this weekend's fixtures.

A win against Kenny Dalglish's side would add to the pressure on the Citizens, and Smalling is hoping to help the strikers with a goal against the Reds.

"I’m definitely working hard on my role at corners and free-kicks in order to make an impact," he told Inside United and the official United website.

"When I joined, one or two of the coaches pointed out that they were looking for goals from the centre-halves. Obviously Nemanja Vidic scores a few and if you can add goals to your armoury it’s a massive plus point."

The former Fulham defender has previously shown an eye for goal, scoring against Scunthorpe United in the League Cup during his debut season for United and notching striker versus Chelsea and Manchester City this term.

It's a trait the player is hoping to continue, although Smalling is well aware that stopping opposition strikers from getting past is his main task for the champions.

"Hopefully I’ll keep finding the net and contribute a bit more in the future. I don’t want us to be relying all the time on the strikers for goals," he added.

"I think centre-forwards are changing a little bit. We’re used to defending against either big strong forwards or quick nippy ones. But the likes of Demba Ba [Newcastle] and Bobby Zamora [ex-Fulham, now QPR], as well as a few other strikers in the league, combine elements of both and I think that’s made things a little more difficult for defenders.

"That could be a reason why we’re seeing a lot more goals."

Sir Alex Ferguson has described Ryan Giggs as an example to all of his players at Old Trafford after the midfielder penned a fresh one-year contract extension to keep him at Manchester United for a 22nd season.
The 38-year-old Welshman made his Red Devils debut back in March 1991 and has gone on to make a staggering 898 appearances for the club.

Giggs has featured 22 times this season, scoring three goals as he looks to secure his 13th league title at United.

“Ryan is a marvellous player,” said Ferguson. “In many ways, he epitomises all my teams here at United: he has constantly re-invented himself, adapted to the changing nature of the game and retained that desire and hunger for success.

“In every training session and match, he is the example for others to follow. The young players in the dressing room have a great chance to learn from a player who will continue to break records that anyone in the game will find hard to beat.”

Giggs is convinced he will still be able to contribute to the team for the rest of this season and into the next.

He said: “When I signed my first contract, I never thought I’d be able to play at United for 22 years, but I feel good and I know I can still contribute to keeping the team pushing for honours.

“Winning the club’s 19th title was a great feeling but this club is all about what we do next and I’m really pleased I can be part of that.”

Giggsy is a United legend, great news:).

Giggs has proven with his vital assists when it matters that he delivers for the occasion. I do think he needs mids next to him to help him with the running but Welbeck and Chicha are in great form and neither should be dropped tO Leave Rooney on his own.

SAF spot on calling Suarez a disgrace for LFC and saying more should be done to tackle racism. He also admitted Ferdinand was wrong to refuse handshake and Evra wrong with celebrations at the end, although I think it is an emotional release of steam by PE after what Suarez did.

Any United fans remember Fergies own brush with racism?

Of course you don't. Too obsessed with Liverpool to worry about your own team.

A little reminder:

ALEX FERGUSON has been warned that he faces the full wrath of UEFA if he utters one word out of line about Juventus.

The Manchester United manager was yesterday hit with a fine and a stinging rebuke for what were described as "racist" comments against Italians.

Ferguson was handed a fine of 5,000 Swiss Francs, which is pounds 2,155, after he made comments about Inter Milan before both legs of the Champions League clash with the Italians.

A UEFA spokesman branded Ferguson a racist after the United manager said: "When an Italian says it's pasta, I check under the sauce."

And the United manager compounded the insult before the second leg, when he said the Italians' tactics would include "scheming, diving, referee-baiting - the full repertoire."

That incensed UEFA, and has led to a strongly-worded warning that the Scottish manager must not revert to such language when his side meets Italian opposition in the semi-finals.

United take on Juventus in what is bound to be a fraught tie, with both sides reverting to the sort of mind games that Ferguson is famous for. But a UEFA spokesman warned the Old Trafford boss last night that they will be monitoring his behaviour closely from now on.

"This was unnecessary provocation of the opposing team, and we cannot accept racism of any kind," said a spokesman.

"We will be watching closely. If Mr Ferguson makes any of the comments again prior to the game against Juventus, then we would be forced to open up another disciplinary action against him.

"We feel Mr Ferguson, who is an experienced manager with a considerable list of honours, should know perfectly well how to handle the media.

"Therefore, he should have been aware of the potentially negative impact of his declarations, which UEFA saw as unnecessary provocation and inappropriate prior to an important match." Ferguson will now have to watch his words carefully in the build-up to the semi-final clash with arch rivals Juventus - particularly because he has already incensed the Italian nation.

Inter's coach Mircea Lucescu, who resigned after his team were dumped out of the competition by United, claimed the comments would lead to violence. Lucescu insisted that what Ferguson said was "a sad thing and a bad thing," and he claimed that the Inter fans would target the United manager.

United were given a rowdy reception in Italy, and Ferguson was singled out for attention by the fans.

That could happen again in Turin, but last night a United spokesman insisted that the club accepts the punishment, and the matter is behind them. "These things happen in the heat of preparation for big matches. UEFA have their procedures and we accept it. We are now looking forward to the game against Juventus," the spokesman said.

Ferguson's comments were inspired initially before the first leg of the quarter final tie, when he suspected the Italians of playing psychological games over the fitness of Ronaldo.

Manchester United's two-goal hero, Wayne Rooney, does not want to become embroiled in the vicious race row between team-mate Patrice Evra and Liverpool's Luis Suarez.

United defender Evra and Liverpool striker Suarez were at the centre of controversy on Saturday lunchtime in an ill-tempered match at Old Trafford.

Suarez, who was starting his first fixture since an eight-game ban for racially abusing Evra, set an unpleasant tone when refusing to shake his opponent's hand before kick-off.

The action was a factor in a half-time scuffle between both sets of players, while Evra was then criticised after the final whistle for celebrating United's 2-1 win in front of Suarez.

Rooney at the double
.Rooney, though, did not want to be drawn into the controversy, as he told Sky Sports HD2: "We are all professionals, we have to go and do our jobs on the pitch. We have to concentrate on that.

"I think that's between the two individuals, it's not for us to get involved in."

Frustrate
Rooney scored twice in three second-half minutes to take his league tally for the season to 17, earn the win and mean Suarez, who inevitably poked a later consolation, endured an afternoon to forget.

And the former Everton forward told MUTV: "It's a great feeling to score two goals against Liverpool at Old Trafford which obviously helped us win the game and get three points which is something that I had dreamed about as a young boy.

"I think Liverpool came to frustrate us by putting men behind the ball. They did that to a certain extent, but we kept pushing and opened them up a couple of times."

Rooney was also full of praise for winger Antonio Valencia, who set up the second goal and gave Liverpool left-back Jose Enrique a tough afternoon.

"Enrique is a great full-back," said the England international. "He's very quick and powerful and is very similar to Antonio with a similar build.

"But I thought Antonio did really well, as he has done in the last few weeks. Hopefully he can continue that form, because he's a big player for us."

So Suarez has apolpgised for yesterday but not for his actions towards Evra originally, obviously he will be more concerned with letting everyone connected with Liverpool down.

FA need to conclude this by having the two players meet again in a controlled environment with their respective managers to finally sort this issue so everyone can move on, although more has to be done with tackling racism in football.

Muppet Dalglish has apologised too, there has obviously been pressure from the American owners to FINALLY accept responsibility because it is damaging the clubs credibility and is making them look bad not only here but abroad too. The PR department at Anfield needs sorting out!:joker:

The Brazilian brothers have spent the past four years at Old Trafford and have made over 120 appearances between them.

However, Fabio's path to a regular slot at left-back is blocked by Patrice Evra, while Rafael has competed with the likes of Gary Neville and John O'Shea for the right-back berth in the past, and now Phil Jones and Chris Smalling.

The defensive duo hope to represent Brazil at the 2014 World Cup on home soil, but Rafael is happy to bide his time to become a fixture in the United team.

"One target is playing for Brazil at the World Cup and, for that, we need more games for United, but we're relaxed," Rafael told the Sunday Times.

"We're young and, here, maybe only Rooney can play every week, maybe Patrice. You have to understand it's part of being at a big club."

The 21-year-olds were both on the books of Fluminense prior to joining United in 2008 and Rafael acknowledges it will be difficult if one of them ends up playing for another club.

He added: "We have a special bond, we're best friends. When we were five years old someone said, 'Come on, let's play football', we start there and we've never split.

"But sometimes we think what it would be like. I know he could go to another club, one day.

"If it happens it will be hard but we're prepared, it's football, it's life."

I like the twins attitude and sure they will continue to improve at United, although they do seem to be injury prone sometimes.

When Denis Irwin limped off the Old Trafford pitch after just 35 minutes against Everton on 2 March 1991, Alex Ferguson replaced him with a skinny 17-year-old.

Now, almost 21 years later, that talented teenager has won more trophies than any other player in the history of English football and is closing in on his 900th appearance for Manchester United.

As for Irwin, he can't believe Ryan Giggs is still terrorising top-flight defences, and recalls when the young Welshman first starting knocking on the first-team door.

"It's incredible," Irwin says as he stands on the forecourt at Old Trafford. "We all knew about him. He was like lightning, he was like the wind, and had such great ability and skill.

"The best thing about him was that he could do his defensive duties as well. He never shirked that responsibility and still doesn't. He played on the left wing in front of me for 10 years and it's incredible he's still as sharp and as driven as he is."

And important to the team. Giggs may be 38 now but he remains a vital component of Sir Alex's championship-chasing side. Games don't get much bigger than United vs Liverpool and Ryan's started all three encounters this season against the men from Merseyside.

The most recent, Sunday's eventful outing, was his 899th for the Reds, leaving him just one short of an astonishing landmark.

"To make 900 appearances for a club like this..." Irwin says, trailing off as he struggles to findthe words to describe the achievement.

"Everyone knew him as an out-and-out winger. To change his thought process on a football field [and adapt to a role in the centre of midfield] is testament to how good a player he is. He not only stayed at the top of his game but changed it as well."

Giggs won't merely reach 900 games: it's likely he'll smash the landmark. After all, last Friday he signed a contract extension with the club that will keep him at Old Trafford until the end of the 2012/13 season. By that stage - remember, Ryan also boasts 64 international caps for Wales - there's every chance he'll be nudging 1000 senior appearances.

But why stop there?

"He certainly looks sharp enough when he plays," Irwin says. "You should play as long as you can, especially at this level. And especially here."

With that, the Irishman, himself a veteran of 529 appearances for the Reds, gestures towards the stadium and we're reminded once more of that moment more than two decades earlier when Giggs trotted onto the pitch to make his first-team bow.

"Manchester United believe we may be seeing the start of a very special career this afternoon," announced Clive Tyldesley at the time, commentating for ITV.

"Special", it turns out, was a gross understatement.

WOW what an acheivement for Giggsy!!:)

Paul Pogba feels he is improving all the time at United as he learns from the experienced stars at Carrington.

The Frenchman was outstanding in the Reserves' 2-1 win against Bolton on Monday night in his first run-out since an impressive cameo as a substitute in the Barclays Premier League defeat of Stoke.

After an inviting free-kick allowed Reece Brown to grab the opener, the midfielder hit the bar with a ferocious drive and then headed the winner with six minutes remaining.

"It was very hard," he told MUTV at Moss Lane. "Seriously. We were winning 1-0 but they came back and we really wanted win the game. We wanted more and we won it and I think we deserved it.

"Because I hadn't scored since the Norwich game, I think, I wanted to score so badly today. So I scored and I'm really happy.

"In training, I've been practising all the time - passing and going in the box - and it paid off. I'll just carry on and hopefully score more goals."

Pogba celebrated with his brother Mathias, who plays for Wrexham, after getting the winner. "My brother always comes to my games," he added. "When I score, I go and see him and thank him for watching my games and am just happy."

In terms of pushing for more first-team inclusion, the 18-year-old was quick to stress he is soaking up the experience of sitting on the bench and watching his team-mates closely. After being an unused substitute in the victory against Liverpool, he was pleased to revel in the atmosphere.

"It's very good," he enthused. "Just to train with the talented players, top-class players, and improve and get more experience.

"When I'm on the bench, I just watch and want to play with them and get involved. Like against Liverpool, it was a great chance for me to be on the bench.

"I hope I will come on and do my best and show everyone what I can do."

Javier Hernandez says United are aiming to make it a happy first foray into the Europa League by winning in Amsterdam.

The Reds take on Dutch outfit Ajax for only the second time ever in European competition on Thursday, in the Round of 32 first leg.

United's only win on the road in Europe so far this season came in October against Romanian minnows Otelul Galati, during the disappointing Champions League campaign.

And with Sir Alex already confirming he’ll field his strongest team at the Amsterdam ArenA, United are out to secure a commanding position ahead of next week's Old Trafford return.

"Playing at home in the second leg is important but it’s only a small advantage – it doesn’t guarantee victory," Hernandez told MUTV.

"It’ll be a difficult game but we’ll go to Amsterdam looking to win.

"The Champions League is the best competition in Europe and it’s a bit strange to be in the Europa League. But we want to win every tournament we enter.

"Both teams have a lot of history in Europe, so it should be a great game."

Sir Alex Ferguson interview...

Sir Alex, how do you think your team’s been performing this season?
We’ve had our ups and downs and we’ve been unlucky with injuries. We’ve had a lot of them, which you don’t expect, and we’ve got people like Nemanja Vidic and Darren Fletcher out for the whole season. You can replace your best players for a game or two, but you really notice the difference over a longer period, and that’s what’s happened to us. Even so, we’re fighting hard to win the Premiership again and there’s a lot of merit in that. Obviously I’m optimistic about our chances.

Has the team suffered because you’ve not been able to rotate players?
These days it’s very, very hard to use the same players for every match. The game’s so fast now that players suffer a lot more muscle fatigue and need more rest. You’re talking about players who run 13 or 14 kilometres every game – a lot more than in the past – and you have to keep your whole squad in the best possible shape.

There are two new title challengers in England this season. Do you think the Premier League is more competitive now?
There’s always been competition. The difference now is that instead of a big four, with us, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool a little further back, we’ve got a big six, with Tottenham, who’ve finally become competitive, and Manchester City, who’ve spent a lot of money. That’s made the path to the title a lot tougher.

Does Manchester United’s surprise UEFA Champions League exit still hurt?
It was a massive disappointment because my feeling is that if we’d gone through, we would have gone on to the final. For me the problem was the home game against Basel. We were 2-0 up and then missed four or five clear-cut chances. We ended up losing our concentration and though we managed to salvage a draw, it was a bad result for us. It left us having to go and get at least a point in the return game. And though we dominated the match, we didn’t score, and when that happens you don’t deserve to win.

Basel did cause you problems, though...
Yes, they did. The thing is you’ve always got to dictate the pace when you’re a big team like us. The sides competing in the Champions League now are much better on the break than they used to be. A few years back opponents would send two or three players into our half whenever they got on the ball, but now it’s five or six, and at pace too. I think that’s one of the biggest overall improvements we’ve seen in the game recently.

You came off second best in last year’s final against Barcelona. Is there anything you could have done differently that night?
I don’t regret anything we did because they were the better side. The first two goals were entirely avoidable and maybe with a bit of luck we could have won the game, but when the other team’s that bit better than you, then there’s not much you can do about it.

Do you think that Barcelona and Real Madrid are ahead of everyone at the moment?
I still think Barcelona are the best team in Europe, although Real Madrid are closing the gap on them. The lead they’ve got in the league shows that. They might be on the same level as them soon, but for the moment Barça have still got that magical ability to play a game that’s beyond everyone else. When [Lionel] Messi, Xavi and Andres Iniesta are on song, they’re just unstoppable.

Your club has this remarkable ability to stay at the top despite spending very little on transfers. Is that a deliberate strategy?
We decided a few years ago to create a structure with young players, like Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and Anderson, and we also knew we had some talented youngsters coming through the academy, like Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley. All we’ve had to do since then is just build things around a few young players. With that as our strategy we’ve not had to spend huge amounts of money to stay competitive because we’ve already got the talent at home.

Do you feel then that despite the setback in Basel, Manchester United are still able to compete with the European elite?
Like I said, I feel we had the ability to go all the way to the final. Luck wasn’t on our side, but I think we’ve got the ambition to compete with Barcelona and Real Madrid, and I don’t feel we’re that far away from them. I’m sure we’ll show that soon.

Sir Alex, you’ve been at Manchester United for 25 years now, which makes you the club’s longest-serving manager. What’s been the key to your success?
It has a lot to do with the club. I’ve had the opportunity to work with a more long-term view and change direction towards where I think it should go. I can plan two or three years ahead, which is something that doesn’t happen hardly anywhere else. This is a results industry and if a manager loses four or five games in a row then his job is under threat. But at United that scenario simply isn’t possible. I’m in charge of all footballing matters, including our scouting network and youth teams. In that sense I’m very fortunate, because I can make quick decisions on who to bring in next to strengthen the squad and where to get them from.

A few years ago United’s success was based around players brought through the club’s youth system, whereas nowadays few make that leap. What has changed?
It has to do with a change in the legislation. A few years ago the requirement was brought in that you could only sign young players that lived within an hour-and-a-half radius of the club’s headquarters. It wasn’t like that before, which was how we were able to sign such fantastic young lads. But since it became physically impossible to find six or seven players a year so close by, we decided to change the priorities of our scouting system. As a result, we started to bring in very talented players from abroad and we’ve had success that way. But it’s true, in terms of developing players from within the club, it’s been a long time since we produced a player of David Beckham’s calibre. But the legislation changed again a short while back and it’ll be like it was 15 year ago once more, so I’m very optimistic we’ll be able to get the production line we had in the past going again.

What part do you play in signing players from abroad?
Let me use Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez as an example. Our chief scout had a contact in Mexico who mentioned the lad’s name, which was the first step. He got hold of some videos of Chivas' matches and showed me them. When we watched them we thought, “This lad’s got promise”, but you can’t decide to sign someone just by watching them on a screen. So I sent my chief scout over to Mexico for a month, with a view to seeing what the player was like on and off the pitch. And that’s how we discovered that his father and his grandfather had both played at World Cups and that the lad was on the verge of national-team selection. After all that, it was a pretty easy decision. We carried out all the necessary steps and managed to sign him before South Africa 2010, which was important as his value would have increased afterwards.

How much do you think football has changed over the time you’ve spent in the game?
Enormously. To begin with, when I first started out in management 37 years ago there were no agents. Imagine that! There was no freedom of contract either, so players were totally tied to their clubs. A change in that sense was inevitable, though I think that now the scales tipped completely in the other direction and I’m not sure it’s good for the game. Of course the way the media works has changed too, there’s a lot of pressure on journalists to publish huge news stories – not just about sport but about everything – and that’s had an impact on us, no doubt about it.

And how about the players and what happens out on the pitch?
In that sense, I think the biggest change over the last decade has been the improvement in playing surfaces. They’re fantastic now and, given the technological advances in that area, playing on a poor pitch has become very unusual. And the other big change has been in sports science, which has progressed at an astonishing rate. For example, when I started out at Manchester United my entire coaching staff consisted of just eight people, and that included my assistant coaches, fitness trainers and scouts. Now I’ve got ten sport scientists! It’s a radical change.

Do you think that the pace of the game has become quicker as a result?
That’s inevitable, as progress and increased speed go hand-in-hand. Cars are faster now, trains are faster, everyday life moves faster, and players in other sports are also quicker now. And well, given all that speed, it’s only logical that the pace of the game of football also increases. That’s also meant an equivalent increase in the risk of serious injuries. For example, 30 years ago we’d never see cruciate knee ligament injuries and now they’re very common.

If you could pick just one moment from your long and illustrious career, what would it be?
Winning that Champions League final against Bayern Munich in Barcelona [in 1999], no doubt about it. It was a feat I’d never achieved before personally and the last time the club had done it was in 1968, so it really was long overdue. Nor must we forget, of course, that it was a brilliant game!

Finally, having already changed your mind once about retirement, how long do you see yourself continuing in the game?
My philosophy is that, for as long as I’m enjoying my job and I’m in good health, I’m going to carry on here. I don’t think you can set yourself limits, but nor can you plan too far ahead because you don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow. The time will come [for me to retire], obviously, but right now it’s not something I’m thinking about..

Sir Alex Ferguson is optimistic that a recent change in transfer legislation will help Manchester United develop more home-grown youngsters at the club.

United successfully brought through players like David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Gary and Phil Neville and Nicky Butt in the mid-nineties.

In recent years, Ferguson has bought players from abroad.

However, the Old Trafford boss said: "I'm optimistic we'll be able to get the production line going again."

The change in legislation to which 70-year-old Ferguson was referring was the introduction of the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP), which came in towards the end of last year.

The new proposals allow Premier League clubs to sign youngsters from Football League clubs without having to go to a tribunal if a fee cannot be agreed.

It guarantees lower league clubs more funding for youth football over a guaranteed four-year period but it could mean they receive lower fees for players under the age of 17.

It has been met with a mixed reaction in the lower leagues, with Gillingham chairman Paul Scally particularly critical of the new system.

"They can take our kids without paying what we regard as fair compensation," he told BBC Radio Kent in October .

However, speaking to Fifa's website, Ferguson, who is on a one-year rolling contract at United, said: "A few years ago the requirement was brought in that you could only sign young players that lived within an hour-and-a-half radius of the club's headquarters.

"It wasn't like that before, which was how we were able to sign such fantastic young lads.

"But since it became physically impossible to find six or seven players a year so close by, we decided to change the priorities of our scouting system.

"As a result, we started to bring in very talented players from abroad and we've had success that way.

"In terms of developing players from within the club, it's been a long time since we produced a player of Beckham's calibre.

"But the legislation changed again a short while back and it'll be like it was 15 years ago once more."

Glad United won:). First half was dire but second half was much better.

Nani really frustrated on his return in the first half, but improved in the second half and put the cross in for Ashley Young's goal. Young was annoying by keep going to ground easily, although this will have boosted his confidence.

Fabio played well. Delighted to see Cleverley back, missed his contributions especially the passing but glad he got took off in the second half as we couldn't risk him playing the full 90 minutes on his return.

Antonio Valencia and Rooney setting up the second goal for Chicharito, glad for the Little Pea but Tony V went off injured after. I hope he is OK:(.
