Sir Alex handed UEFA role

Former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is to take up an ambassadorial role with UEFA.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/D73E0F3A6805471693F586F28AECBB2D.ashx?h=270&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,162,1956,1258

The Old Trafford director confirmed he will adopt another position within the game while continuing to work for the Reds.

"It is an honour and a privilege to accept this role as ambassador for UEFA," he stated.

"With the experience I have had over the years, I hope I can help young coaches, in particular, in an industry which is becoming more difficult. Young coaches have to be prepared to make sacrifices and time is not guaranteed in modern-day football because it has become very much a results industry.

"The best chance they have got is to prepare for it. I took my full coaching badge when I was 24 years of age and I thought that was the best thing I did to give myself a proper chance to be able to survive in football.

"I would also tell them not to change their own philosophy but to have faith in it and believe in themselves.

"It's also about the sacrifices you have to make. Ask any manager's wife exactly what sacrifice means because they are working all the time. They are at games, at training, they are coaching, but that's the sacrifice you have to make and you need to understand that when you start."

Michel Platini, president of the European governing body, explained the job in more detail at an executive committee meeting in Switzerland.

"Sir Alex will be chairman of the forum of elite coaches that meet every year," revealed the Frenchman. "He will also be a member of the technical study group of the Champions League and the European Championship."

Congratulations Sir Alex Ferguson with his new role, legend:):amazed::worship:.

Juan Mata signs for United

Manchester United is delighted to announce that Juan Mata has completed his transfer for a club-record fee of £37.1 million.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/0BAEE7B0282840329FB7758AD2BF6D98.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=9,0,2141,1592

Mata, 25, has 32 caps for the Spanish national team and has played 135 times for Chelsea, scoring 32 goals since signing from Valencia in 2011.

Juan Mata said: "I am thrilled to be joining United. I have enjoyed some very happy years at Chelsea but the time has come for a new challenge. United is the perfect place for me and I am excited at the chance I have to be part of the next phase in the club's history.

"Chelsea is a top club and I have many friends there but you cannot turn down the chance to join Manchester United. I look forward to helping the manager and the team be successful in the coming years."

David Moyes said: "Juan is one of the finest playmakers in the game today and it's a real pleasure to have secured his signature. He's been instrumental in Chelsea's recent success, with a notable 28 assists and 32 goals in his last two Premier League seasons.

"I have been impressed with the excitement he has shown to be part of the new Manchester United. I know our fans have admired Juan for some time now – he has always played well against us – and I know they will be delighted to see him in the red of United, starting on Tuesday."

Moyes: More to follow Mata

David Moyes is determined to build an exciting team and insists Juan Mata is the "first of many more" new signings to arrive at Manchester United.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/B718CC506676409C8A19925318A78FF0.ashx?h=270&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,19,775,454

The diminutive midfielder was captured for a club-record fee from Chelsea on Saturday and while speaking to MUTV afterwards, the boss revealed that Reds supporters can look forward to even more arrivals.

“I want to build an exciting team,” Moyes explained on Saturday. “That’s always the way I’ve wanted my football to be played and I’ve not known it any other way.

“I want to win and give the supporters something to shout about because I’ve not done that often enough. What I will say is that this is the first of many more to come in time. I’m looking forward to Juan being the start of it.”

When asked if United will sign another player in January, Moyes was cautious but remained optimistic: “I don’t think we’ll have any more in January. I’m still working on it and looking to do things – we know exactly what we’d like to do and if it changes in the last week, which sometimes it can do, then we’ll try. I hope it will be the first of some new signings that will arrive, but more likely in the summer.

Good interview by David Moyes talking about how United were first interested in Juan Mata and the work it took in getting him and he also seems more confident and determined in general and also positive about the clubs future!

What a signing and boost for the club, he'll give us the creativity we need. Yes we're still short in CM and need more quality there when the time comes and the right player is available, but for now I shall enjoy this news!

Manchester United keep Chelsea at arm's length before Mata transfer

Blues fail to engage United in direct negotiation over Spaniard due to Old Trafford fears about Wayne Rooney's future

http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Football/Pix/pictures/2014/1/26/1390771765430/Juan-Mata-Chelsea-Manches-011.jpg

Perhaps the most intriguing part of the long, complex process that finally led to a helicopter carrying Juan Mata arriving at Manchester United's training ground on Saturday is that a £37.1m deal can be arranged without as much as a telephone call between the clubs. Several months of positioning, mutual suspicion and political bargaining, and everything was done without a single word being exchanged in person.

Chelsea certainly tried. On more than one occasion, a message reached Ed Woodward, United's chief executive, that the relevant people at Stamford Bridge were open to sitting at the other side of the negotiating table. Each time, he politely declined. Everybody in football knows Chelsea want to sign Wayne Rooney and Woodward reasoned that it would be virtually impossible to keep them sweet on Mata while also informing them they could forget about anything happening the other way.

Instead, the background to the Mata deal is a case study about how complicated and sensitive these big-money arrangements can be, and an insight into the high influence of agents in the modern business. Without them, both clubs recognise the chances of the deal going through were nonexistent. Seven different agents approached United since August to say they could make it happen. As it turned out, they used Mata's father, Juan senior, and Colin Pomford, a Madrid-based agent who specialises in Spanish business going back to Steve McManaman's time at Liverpool and, later, the Rafael Benítez era.

What has never come out before is that United first heard Mata was open to leaving Chelsea, and keen on moving to Manchester, late in the August transfer window, after he had picked up strong vibes from José Mourinho that he would be used only sparingly. Woodward never actively followed it up because of the Rooney situation. He did, however, establish that David Moyes liked the player.

Their next information – after the window closed – was that Mata was so unhappy he had been to see the top people at Chelsea, among them Roman Abramovich, and been given a verbal agreement that if he carried on being left out of the team, and maintained his professionalism, he would be allowed to leave in January. Chelsea would later harden that into a written agreement that included a €45m buyout and – possibly still thinking about the Rooney issue – one proviso: that the figure could not be activated by United.

That could easily have been the end of the deal. Except Mata and his father went back to Stamford Bridge, once it became clear there was interest from Old Trafford, and asked for the condition to be removed. One of the people involved in the negotiations has told this newspaper that Mata and Abramovich are "almost like friends". Mata had kept to his side, bar one fit of pique after being substituted, and Abramovich respected that.

Chelsea gave him a verbal promise, but nothing in writing, and then sent a message, via Pomford, that maybe it was time the two clubs met face to face. Woodward said no. He simply did not want to risk changing the temperature by getting involved in any talks about Rooney and, with nothing in writing, he was not willing to take any chances about the price suddenly going up.

A separate message came back to United that Chelsea would welcome an official bid on a specific day. Woodward declined again. Instead, his lawyers faxed through a "transfer agreement" informing Chelsea that United had met the buy-out clause and would pay the money, as stipulated, in three parts.

But the game of cat and mouse continued. Chelsea indicated again they wanted to talk and would even let Mata travel to Manchester to take his medical. Except Woodward knew, again, that Rooney would crop up and potentially kibosh the whole deal. "He couldn't risk it," according to one source. So he sat tight, while Mata and the relevant agents went to work behind the scenes. Then Mourinho went public that Mata could leave and that was always going to speed up the process. Finally, the deal was closed on Saturday.

For Woodward, it is the biggest coup of his time in charge at Old Trafford. United have been accused of panic-buying and maybe, in light of the new detail, that is an unfair slant to put on it. The club had, however, advised journalists to "ignore" any speculation about Mata earlier in January, and sources say they still felt as recently as Tuesday that it was far more likely to happen, if at all, in the summer.

If Mata still feels like a strange buy, it is largely because Moyes has insisted for several months that all he wants is a central midfielder and a left-back. Questions about Mata were knocked back on the basis United already had Wayne Rooney and Shinji Kagawa for the No10 position, in line with the club's explanation for not challenging Arsenal for the signature of Mesut Özil.

So why Mata and not Özil? Timing, basically. Özil was offered to United in the first week of the summer transfer window, but Moyes had barely seen Kagawa at that point and wanted to learn more about a player about whom Sir Alex Ferguson had left glowing reports. As it has turned out, Kagawa has been disappointing. United, however, would prefer to keep him for now, not least because Mata is ineligible in the Champions League.

Interesting and fascinating read about what apparently went on behind the scenes to secure the Mata deal!

Credit to Edward Woodward for how he operated if this is true.

Wayne Rooney given special access to Manchester United's transfer secrets

• Rooney now in contract talks with Manchester United
• David Moyes' approach in sharp contrast to Sir Alex Ferguson's

http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Football/Clubs/Club_Home/2014/1/26/1390764033042/Wayne-Rooney-Manchester-U-011.jpg

Wayne Rooney was persuaded to change his mind about leaving Manchester United after being given the kind of privileged access to the club's spending plans that Sir Alex Ferguson had previously denied him, the Guardian can reveal.

Rooney was given advance notice about the £37.1m deal to sign Juan Mata and has also spoken at length to the manager, David Moyes, and the chief executive, Ed Woodward, about their vision of the club under the Glazer family's ownership, in complete contrast to what happened when Ferguson was in charge.

The England striker has been trusted with transfer-market information and kept in the loop about possible signings in a move that acknowledges his importance to the club and a recognition, at the highest level within Old Trafford, that a player of Rooney's stature deserves to know whether a team who have been struggling all season have the financial muscle and ambition to put it right.

The change in tack has had immediate success after Rooney let United know he is open to the idea of extending his contract, which runs out at the end of next season, rather than persisting with his attempts to force a move to Chelsea. Talks are to be held in the next week and the initial noises have been so positive United are quietly optimistic it will end in the player signing a long-term deal that will give him the chance to overtake Sir Bobby Charlton as the club's record scorer, with 249 goals.

Rooney, currently on 208, had previously indicated he was concerned about the club's ambitions when he put in a transfer request in October 2010, prompting Ferguson to make it very clear that the player had no right expecting to be involved at that level.

"I told him that to say we weren't ambitious was nonsense," Ferguson says in his latest autobiography. "Wayne said that we should have pursued Mesut Özil. My reply was that it was none of his business who we should have gone for. I told him it was his job to play and perform." David Gill, Woodward's predecessor, left the same message with Rooney and the striker's adviser, Paul Stretford.

The new regime has taken a softer approach and has been happy to speak to Rooney about player acquisitions, not least to allay his obvious concerns at a time when United are seventh in the Premier League and clearly in need of a makeover.

While United would not ordinarily discuss transfers with players, the discussions show an understanding on their part that it would be self-defeating to keep him out of it. Rooney is understood to have appreciated the VIP treatment, without pushing the boundaries too far. He is aware that United will refuse point-blank to do business with Chelsea and, despite José Mourinho's recent comments about him probably being sold abroad, the player has no great desire to move countries.

His relationship with Ferguson had disintegrated during their final season together but that issue is no longer relevant and, importantly, Rooney has expressed his satisfaction about the working conditions Moyes and his coaching staff have put in place. United have also shown a willingness to reward him financially, with reports of the deal being worth £300,000 a week. It may actually be below that figure but Rooney will have a testimonial as part of the agreement and the figures are still significant for a player who will turn 30 next year. Rooney can also expect to be made captain at some point in the next few years.

Mata, in line to make his debut against Cardiff City on Tuesday, is expected to be the only major arrival at Old Trafford in the January window despite their extensive search for new players. United's information is that Luke Shaw, the Southampton left-back, would prefer a move to Chelsea and the club's scouting of Internazionale's Fredy Guarín has left them unsure about exactly how good the midfielder is.

In the meantime Wilfried Zaha's wretched first six months at Old Trafford, not starting a single Premier League match since his £10m move from Crystal Palace, will see him leave the club on loan in the next few days. Cardiff City have beaten off competition from a long list of clubs, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's links with Old Trafford have also helped the Welsh club negotiate a transfer for Fábio da Silva.

Mata squad number revealed

Manchester United's club-record signing Juan Mata will wear the no.8 shirt.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/E09F47F2531549D2931E2304B3BA2E5F.ashx?h=270&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,42,683,425

Mata completed his move to Old Trafford from Chelsea late on Saturday night, having flown in by helicopter to the Aon Training Complex earlier in the day.

The Spain international has trained with his new team-mates for the last two days and fans could see him for the first time in a United shirt against Cardiff on Tuesday evening.

"I think no.8 is a great number," said Mata at an unveiling press conference at the Aon Training Complex on Monday.

"I like the number. I know seven is iconic here. I was speaking with David [Moyes] about it and we decided eight is a good number for me. Hopefully it will bring me luck."

The Reds' no.8 shirt was previously worn by Anderson, who made his debut for loan club Fiorentina at the weekend.

Rooney, RvP and Fellaini all train

Manchester United boss David Moyes has been given another boost as Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Marouane Fellaini all took part in training today (Monday) ahead of Tuesday’s Barclays Premier League match with Cardiff City at Old Trafford.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/B364A55343484B56898ACBA552CB9F58.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,29,1280,504

The United manager also said new signing Juan Mata trained with the squad for the first time and he will decide on the Spaniard’s inclusion on the day of the game.

Rooney has suffered from an adductor muscle injury in his groin and has been out of action since the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on 1 January.

Van Persie (thigh) has been absent since the 1-0 Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk on 10 December, and Fellaini, sidelined initially with a back injury and then by wrist surgery, last played six days before that in the 1-0 loss to his former club Everton.

The return of key high-profile squad members, added to the arrival of Mata, puts an optimistic outlook on the coming weeks and months as Moyes' men look to climb up the league table.

Rooney link-up excites Mata

Juan Mata is enthusiastic about linking up with Wayne Rooney for the first time, a player he describes as one of England's all-time greats.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/21136C4AB8364249986DED402C8580FA.ashx?h=270&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,40,600,376

Manchester United's new record buy trained alongside the striker ahead of the visit of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Cardiff City on Tuesday and is hoping for the chance to strike up a combination on the pitch.

"I can't wait to play alongside him," enthused Mata. "For me, he's one of the best players in the history of this country. He can score, he can assist and he can come deep to the midfield to take the ball.

"I think I'll enjoy playing alongside him. I'll try to connect with him as much as I can. I'll try to find gaps as I think that's my best kind of play - to try to assist the strikers."

Meanwhile, David Moyes stressed there is no official news on Wayne Rooney's contract talks, following reports that the striker is willing to commit his long-term future to United.

"I've left that to Ed [Woodward] and Wayne and his advisors," explained Moyes. "We'll give you an update at the right time. The right time to speak about Wayne's contract is at that time - whenever that comes around. If you want to talk about his performances, I can do. But I can't talk to you about both of them [his contract and performances] together."

Juan Mata has admitted that he was attracted to Manchester United because of the club’s character and history.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/EC06B50D83374771B5BBF90A61D90079.ashx?h=270&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,1,1280,719

The Spanish midfielder has joined the Reds from Chelsea and was officially unveiled as a United player during a press conference at the Aon Training Complex on Monday.

While addressing a number of issues, including the announcement that he will wear the no.8 shirt, Mata spoke brilliantly about the club's illustrious past and the Reds' reputation for overcoming the odds.

"What I like the most about this club is the character," Mata said. "It would be very difficult for us to come back and take the first position but this is the club that could do that. They fight to the end and that's the image I have of them. They always try to win titles; they fight until the end and come back from difficult moments."

Expanding on his point, Mata added: "I want to show the football I have inside me. That's what I want to do. I think the team is good, the squad is good. This season they've had some unlucky moments. I hope from now until the end of the season we win as many games as we can."

Mata has joined United in the middle of a difficult season with the Reds currently seventh in the Barclays Premier League, 14 points off the top. However, the World Cup winner is confident that his new team-mates can turn things around in the coming months.

"This is a massive club," the 25-year-old explained. "The training ground, the fans and the club - everything is massive and I'm glad to be here. In the history of the Premier League, they're the team who have won the most trophies. I think it will be great.

"I like the pressure. I think it's good to try and improve when you have pressure - people are expecting big things from me and I'm looking forward to trying to do that and make all these amazing fans happy."

Now, having come through the hectic 48 hours that preceded Monday's unveiling, Mata is keen to start his new life with United: "The history of the club, the players in the squad and the welcome was unbelievable for me.

"Coming here by helicopter, the welcome from the staff, the players and the fans on social media has been unbelievable. Now I just want to play and try my best for the team to give this confidence back.”

What a classy guy:worship:.

Moyes promises squad changes

David Moyes insists the £37.1million signing of Juan Mata represents his unrelenting ambition and desire to achieve success with Manchester United.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/7B2BE99394224880B7C59D851F22E89F.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,83,749,361

Mata has joined for a club-record fee and was officially unveiled as the Reds' new no.8 at a press conference on Monday. Speaking afterwards, the boss outlined why this deal is just part of his long-term vision and hinted at further acquisitions.

Moyes also explained he won’t stand for the disappointing form that has seen United exit two domestic cup competitions and lose considerable ground in the title race this term.

“I am not going to accept it,” the boss said. “I am disappointed we are not in a much stronger position. I am disappointed with how we have played. I ultimately take the rap for that – and I will do. But what I will do is make it right. I am going to get better players in. There will be more.

“Unfortunately, I don't think there will be more in January. But it will change. We will change and alter it around. I have said many times, I have given every player the opportunity to play and show what they can do. We have nearly done that now.

“The summer transfer window wasn't a good one for us. I was only just in the job. We were getting to know everyone and we had a new chief executive as well. I was getting to know the players and the squad. We have now had a pretty good chance to have a look at it. We have to start making some changes and we will try to make that happen.”

Sounds promising! I like that David Moyes is more confident and determined, he could change things round and this is a signal of faith/time in him.

Ole cool before reunion

Manchester United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will keep his emotions in check when he returns to Old Trafford as Cardiff City manager on Tuesday night.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/A1486CD50E4645DE96C58512360637CC.ashx?h=270&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=296,126,1803,975

The former striker has had a tough start to his reign as boss of the Bluebirds, who have slipped to the foot of the Barclays Premier League following his appointment in the wake of Malky Mackay’s controversial dismissal by the Welsh club.

Solskjaer has yet to lead his side to three points in the league, but two hard-fought wins in the FA Cup, most recently at Bolton on Saturday, have put Cardiff into the fifth round.

Of his return to the ground he graced in over a decade of outstanding service to the Reds, the Norwegian said: “It’s the best place to go and play football, so of course I am really looking forward to it and so are the players.

"When you are a young kid, you dream about playing at the top level and I’m sure my players dreamt about playing at Old Trafford. We’ll go out there and give it a go with lots of energy and enthusiasm, and enjoy the game.

“Three points, of course, is what it means to us. We can’t say we are going to go there and win, but we will put in a performance that we can be proud of, and come back home with no regrets. That’s all I ask of the players.”

Despite his illustrious United career, which also included two years in charge of the reserves following his playing retirement, the 40-year-old revealed he had not seen managing a team against his old club as something that would have happened so soon.

“It’s not been an ambition, it’s sort of been an unrealistic dream,” added Solskjaer, who guided Molde to two Norwegian league titles after leaving United’s coaching staff.

“The former manager I had always installed into us: ‘dream big, dream maybe unrealistic’ as you never know, one day it might happen. For me to play at Manchester United was never in my wildest dreams, but now I’m going back there as a manager.”

Despite the time that has passed since his departure for Norway, Solskjaer is hopeful that his knowledge of all things United will work to his advantage when it comes to business on Tuesday night.

“I know the club, I know the mind-set of the place obviously, so I’ll go into this more prepared than for different stadia. I’m not too emotional. I got used to it by playing there for 11 years, I was used to the crowds. When I’m there, I’m working for 90 minutes, plus injury time probably!”

Nice words by Ole, but hopefully United beat his club tomorrow!

Fabio and Zaha set for Cardiff

Manchester United duo Fabio and Wilfried Zaha are poised to complete moves to Cardiff City.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/B207CA7C8560496F89428B6910B0AFB0.ashx?h=270&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,152,2468,1538

Manager David Moyes confirmed the deals are in the pipeline after Bluebirds boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed the Brazilian is already training with his new club while the finishing touches to a loan switch for Zaha are being discussed in the next 24 hours.

Neither player will be eligible to feature in Tuesday's Barclays Premier League fixture between the clubs.

"We're delighted for Fabio because he has been a great servant," explained Moyes to MUTV. "His brother is doing a great job for us here as well.

"We wish him well. He had one or two options but, in the end, we felt we couldn't get him enough games. I said to the players, if you feel I'm not getting you enough games, come and see me. Fabio felt that so he's got a move to Cardiff.

"With Wilfried Zaha, I'd said to him during the summer that we wanted to get him games. If he played, then great, but if he couldn't, we'd get him out on loan. We had one or two offers for him but just felt Cardiff, at this moment in time, might be the right club. With Ole going there as well, he knows how the club works here and exactly what we do with the players so hopefully it will be a good move for Wilf."

Good luck to them both:).

Yorke surprised by Ole

Dwight Yorke admits he is surprised Ole Gunnar Solskjaer turned to management in his retirement but is certain his former Manchester United team-mate will receive a rapturous reception at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/A25812D049874FE395B77A9E3C2C0A23.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,206,2400,1097

The Cardiff City boss returns to his former club for the first time as a rival manager after moving from Molde to succeed Malky Mackay.

Although Sir Alex Ferguson noted how Solskjaer would analyse games from the substitutes' bench, fellow Treble-winner Yorke confesses he did not envisage coaching being a future career for his former team-mate.

"I didn't see it as a player," he told ManUtd.com. "I didn't see that happening to him. Clearly, he had other ideas. He is a very cool, calm and collected person. There will be no ranting and raving like other managers with Ole. I wish him every success as he's a great guy and, hopefully, he can be a good manager in the future."

Yorke believes the focus will still be on accruing three important points once the first whistle sounds despite the respect that will be paid to the Norwegian. In the wake of the Capital One Cup exit to Sunderland, the supporters' priority will be backing the team for 90 minutes rather than saluting a returning hero.

"Undoubtedly, he will get a great reception," added the Tobagan during the Trophy Tour presented by DHL. "I think that will be the case but we need to get more points in the bag. Ex-players go back and get a warm reception but it soon turns around straight after that. We welcome them in but need the three points."

Young: Let's attack Cardiff

Ashley Young says Manchester United are determined to put Cardiff City to the sword and bring the fear factor back to Old Trafford.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/8A5139F080FA443A943161E38C34E8EA.ashx?h=359&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=329,1,969,961

While the Theatre of Dreams is historically a fortress, the Reds have lost five home games this season and most recently exited the Capital One Cup following a dramatic penalty shoot-out defeat to Sunderland, albeit after a 2-1 second leg win in extra-time.

In an exclusive interview with United Review, the official matchday programme, Young explains why United must get off to good start and score an early goal to ease any unwanted nerves inside the stadium.

"It would lift everyone and that's our aim," he explains. "That's always the way we want to play – we always want to attack, especially at Old Trafford. We want to have lots of possession, create chances and put teams on the back foot and that's what we need to do from the first whistle tonight."

Asked if the fear factor has left Old Trafford, Young replies: "I'm not sure it's totally gone, but obviously a few teams have come here and taken points off us which is something the players, the staff and fans aren't used to. We don't want that to continue. We want teams to come here and fear us. Hopefully, after the first few minutes tonight, Cardiff won't know what's hit them!"

This season, United's match-going fans have been praised for their backing of the team and Young, who has been known to sit with the supporters while injured, has a message of thanks for the Red Army.

"I'd just say keep the belief," the England international states. "The support they've given us, home and away, has been fantastic. Everyone knows things haven't gone as well as we all would have liked, but the fans have always been behind us, from the first whistle until the last. We're very grateful for that support and my message to them would just be to stick with us and we'll do everything we can to repay their unbelievable support."

Boss: Everyone appreciates Mata

David Moyes described Juan Mata as "a player that any football fan would admire" after officially unveiling the Spaniard as a Manchester United player.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/D3E6ABDB0F594F0AB9220F69A84BED4E.ashx?h=270&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,8,693,397

The 25-year-old World Cup winner was voted Chelsea's Player of the Year for two consecutive seasons but his chances were limited under returning manager Jose Mourinho, prompting his club-record move to Old Trafford on Saturday.

Speaking to the media following a press conference at the Aon Training Complex on Monday, Moyes was delighted by his January acquisition and hailed the Spaniard's attitude to the game.

"He is a top player, he has proved it," Moyes said. "He is confident because of what he has done over recent seasons. I don't think there is any football fan who watches the Premier League who wouldn't have admired Juan Mata in recent seasons because of the goals he has scored and the goals he has made. Yes, he is confident. He has come to a club that is delighted to have him.

"I don't know him well enough yet to put words like great next to his name. Everybody who tells me about him says he is a great ambassador for football. He conducts himself very well. He is a smart, intelligent young man. From what we have seen he is all of that.

"He understands the club he is coming to. He is a Spanish international who wants to play to make sure he is in the World Cup squad. I think he can
genuinely add something to what we have got. He can give us a different type of player to what we already have in the squad.

"He can play several positions and, undoubtedly if you look back over the last month or so when we have been without the likes of Wayne Rooney or Robin van Persie, what impact would he have had if we had him during this difficult period?"

When quizzed on where Mata will play for United, Moyes was reluctant to pinpoint a single position and instead pointed to the player's impressive versatility.

"I won't be surprised at what he can do for us," the boss told reporters. "He can play off the right, off the left, behind the striker. He will play any one of the three roles. We know that is what he does. He plays it in his own style.

"But he can play in any of those three positions. That is partly what we want. We want people who are flexible. We want people who can change within games as well. We don't want people to stick to one position. It will allow us to alter things if we feel we have to during games as well."

Damn right! Juan Mata will be more appreciated at United than he was at Chelsea and I think that JM himself will love that feeling.

David Moyes is spot on about Mata's flexibility too:).

Moyes pleased to beat Cardiff

David Moyes declared it a “good night” for Manchester United after watching Tuesday's comfortable 2-0 win over Cardiff City at Old Trafford.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/7ED38A2F2FE6423A895963B8A967C264.ashx?h=270&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,73,2628,1549

Juan Mata made his full debut and started alongside Robin van Persie, who needed just six minutes to score on his first appearance since 10 December. Ashley Young added another in a second half that saw also Wayne Rooney return from injury.

While speaking to MUTV afterwards, the boss hailed a job well done and outlined the areas where his side can make improvements in the coming weeks and months.

“At 1-0, I was hoping that we would get a second goal earlier and gone on to finish the game off,” Moyes explained. “Even when it was 2-0, I wanted us to get a third goal. But it was good to get the goal early on and we started the game quite well.

“I was hoping for it to be much better, I am hoping for our play to be better but I thought there were some good signs. Obviously, we have got Robin back who is not totally fully fit yet. It was great to have him back. We have got Wayne back and Juan made his debut, so all in all it was a good night.”

Mata took his highly-anticipated bow in a red shirt and cut an impressive figure during his 85 minutes on the pitch, showing off his range of passing in the final third. Moyes was understandably pleased with his new acquisition.

“I thought Juan played very well. He made some terrific passes for us, got us on the ball, gave us a different look at times and he will grow. We will get used to him more as well. I was a bit worried about his overall match fitness but when we got to 2-0, I thought the longer we keep him on the better and we will hopefully get him up to speed quickly.

“He was close to making us a couple of goals in the early part of the game with his passing and I think everybody knows what he is capable of. I think when we are in full flow, when we are playing as well as we can then I think he will be a big help for us all.”

Moyes was also full of praise for opening scorer van Persie, who netted a real poacher’s effort to remind everyone of his immeasurable talents in front of goal.

“Robin scored and we have missed his goals. Out of nothing, he can get you a goal. Antonio should probably have scored with the first header that hit the bar and then they saved the second one before Robin got in. He certainly did that all of last year and we have missed him. We really have.”

Well said DM:). Things are hopefully looking up.

Mata savours special debut

Juan Mata was delighted with his first appearance in a Manchester United shirt - chiefly because it ended in victory for the Reds.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/3413F753C1D442A3A26285AF2E33AF2E.ashx?h=270&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,75,1475,903

The Spanish midfielder started Tuesday's match against Cardiff City at Old Trafford, just under 72 hours after completing his club-record transfer from Chelsea. He played 85 minutes - an impressive duration given his recent lack of match practice with his former club - and afterwards thanked the United fans for the rapturous welcome he received.

Mata told MUTV: "I'm so grateful. From the first minute, from the warm-up they [the fans] have been amazing for me. I will just try to give this confidence back on the pitch.

"It was a very special day for me. My first game - my debut - with a victory. It was perfect. I enjoyed it a lot.

"What I love the most is to play. So these minutes [on the pitch] for me are very important. Now I'm going to train and I'm looking forward to playing at the weekend and trying to do my best for the team."

When asked about his contribution to United's 2-0 win, which was sealed with a goal in each half from Robin van Persie and Ashley Young, Mata said: "I tried to play passes for the wingers or the strikers and in the end we scored twice. The most important thing was we won and I felt comfortable with my team-mates."

The colleagues Mata was particularly looking forward to playing with were van Persie and Wayne Rooney, and while he had to be content with being on the pitch with one and then the other, he experienced enough to maintain his almost child-like excitement.

"Robin's early goal shows how good he is," enthused Mata. "And Wayne as well... we are talking about two of the best strikers in the world. It's going to be amazing to play alongside them."

The new arrival accepted that it will take time to properly gel with his new team-mates and surroundings, but the earliest signs are very encouraging.

"I think it will take time but the most important thing is to improve our confidence by winning. Our next game is again like a final for us and we'll try to get the three points again and try to climb the table.

"I'm looking forward to playing at the weekend and trying to do my best for the team."

Mata: United feels like home

Juan Mata says he has been caught in a whirlwind since arriving at Manchester United, although the club-record signing admits he already feels at home with the Reds.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/AE2FAD48E72B4499B6CE17F06F188925.ashx?h=359&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=1356,0,3263,2862

The Spaniard moved to Old Trafford on Saturday and was officially unveiled as the club's new no.8 on Monday. His full debut against Cardiff City followed just a day later, capping a remarkable 72 hours for the 25-year-old.

Speaking after Tuesday's 2-0 win over Cardiff City, Mata tried to reflect on his short time at United so far and explained how everybody has welcomed him to the club.

"Time has gone so quickly since I arrived here," Juan told ManUtd.com and PA Sport. "I only trained twice with the team but the welcome was amazing. The lads are really good. There is a great atmosphere. I am very happy and looking forward to the next game.

"The stadium is unbelievable," Juan went on to say. "The fans are so loud, even before the game. It has been an amazing time for me. Even social media has shown me so much. The amount of fans this club has is unbelievable.

"I have felt comfortable at this club from the first minute. The players have made me feel like this. To be honest last week I didn't train that much because of the transfer. I can improve. But I felt okay. I felt good playing alongside these players."

Having recorded a fine 2-0 victory over Cardiff, Mata is keen to maintain that winning feeling and move closer to the Barclays Premier League summit.

"We need to sustain that feeling for sure. I am always positive. If any club can come back and climb the table it is this club. We will try to win as many games as we can to the end of the season, hopefully all of them."

Boss: Mata brings versatility

David Moyes believes that Juan Mata has increased the competition for places at Manchester United squad, citing the Spaniard's ability to fulfill different roles.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/B7F0BE2EEF9E43C0878561EAAE769A6E.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=0,34,1335,1028

The midfielder made his debut as the Reds ran out 2-0 winners over Cardiff on Tuesday evening, and provided the assist for Ashley Young's second-half strike. Moyes was impressed with Mata's contribution, and says his arrival gives him more options for the remainder of the season.

The manager said: "I can play him in any role. He can play off the left or off the right, which allows me to keep the Rooney-van Persie partnership. I'm quite comfortable with that, and he’s also capable of doing another job like the no.10 role. Wayne has dropped into midfield in some games, so we've got options.

"I know we can use Juan in different positions - I think what he'll do [wherever he plays] is take the ball. We'll get used to him and he'll get used to us. Mata scores goals and creates chances, and you can't get enough of those, especially at Old Trafford.

"Now we've got competition, I can use the players at different times and change them within games if we need to do that. I wanted to see Juan play with Robin and it was good to get him those minutes.

"The crowd gave him a fantastic reception. They saw he was creative in the early part of the game and he probably made our best chances in the first 20 or 30 minutes."

He sure does!

Moyes demands more

David Moyes has demanded more from his Manchester United side despite a welcome 2-0 victory against Cardiff City.

The boss was delighted to hand Juan Mata his debut against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Bluebirds while Robin van Persie and substitute Wayne Rooney returned from injury. However, he issued a warning that there is still plenty of work to be done at Old Trafford.

"My mood has improved as I know I've got some really good players coming back," he replied, when asked at the post-match press conference if he was feeling more cheerful.

"I still want us to be more convincing. I want to win better and play much better. Don't think, because we've won, I've got a smile on my face and am happy. I'm happy for the points but, for where we want to go and the vision of how I want the team to play, I still think there is a long way to go."

Yes, we can do better and improve.

Young: Goal one of my best

Ashley Young was delighted to get on the scoresheet during Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Cardiff City and move closer to his targeted goal tally for the season.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/C2A470A3C47142CFA7E747C434300A9B.ashx?h=270&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,263,3000,1947

The United winger was a standout performer against the Bluebirds, providing the cross which led to Robin van Persie breaking the deadlock in the sixth minute before netting the winner with a powerful 25-yard effort in the second half at Old Trafford.

Young has now scored three times in his last seven appearances, a fine run of form that has seen the England international catch the eye in recent weeks. Speaking after the final whistle, he was understandably elated with his goal and a good win.

“It ranks up there with my best,” Young told MUTV. “As soon as I struck it, I thought it had a good chance of going in and I think I was celebrating before it hit the back of the net. I’m delighted to get on the scoresheet, but the most important thing was getting the three points and we’ve done that. Of course I should score more. I set myself targets at the start of the season and I’m on the way. Hopefully I can build on that, so we’ll have to wait and see.

“We could have had a few more goals but we set out to get the three points and we’ve done that. We were frustrated that it was only 2-0, we spoke about it after the game and there were more goals to get. We got the victory and felt comfortable, so we’re delighted. We will build on this.”

When quizzed on Young’s sensational strike, manager David Moyes was clearly impressed and heaped praise on the 28-year-old winger, explaining why his attitude and output will him earn a regular starting berth if mixed with consistency.

“Everybody knows that Ash is capable of that and I am pleased for him because he worked hard tonight, there is a lot of competition for places and he is pushing hard to play,” Moyes told MUTV.

“He will do if he keeps coming up with some goals or creating goals. Ash put the cross in for Antonio Valencia to hit the bar which led to Robin van Persie’s goal, so he had an assist in one and scored the other. Well done to him.”

Well done Ash.

Jones hails Mata impact

Phil Jones says Juan Mata's arrival at Manchester United has lifted everyone at the club.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/189B795EB9AE49F0974ABFBAF7050AA2.ashx?h=270&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,99,1280,818

Mata completed his switch from Stamford Bridge to Old Trafford late on Saturday evening and, despite only having trained with his new team-mates for two days, impressed on his debut in the 2-0 win over Cardiff.

Jones is already predicting great things for Mata and says the whole squad has been boosted by his signing.

"It makes an impact in the dressing room when you sign a player of that calibre. He is such a talented player on the ball. He has definitely lifted spirits in the dressing room and especially in training," Jones told ManUtd.com and PA Sport.

"We want to impress and show him that we are what we are, that we are one of the best teams to be at. He came in against Cardiff. He has done well and I am sure he will be a huge asset and fantastic player for Manchester United, hopefully for many years to come. He sees the pass that sometimes no-one else sees. If he continues to make them, I am sure we will soon be climbing the table."

Mata's arrival and successful debut was coupled with the return from injury of both Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie. Jones is delighted to see the two strikers back in action and hopes the pair can act as a spur for more positive results in the coming weeks.

"Robin has worked hard to get back. We are delighted to have him, Wazza and Juan now. Bar Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick, we will be at full strength on Saturday [at Stoke] hopefully," added the England international.

When asked if Rooney and van Persie's absence had been a big factor during a disappointing spell of results, Jones replied: "Of course, but it is no excuse. When you do miss players of that stature you need to find it elsewhere. I think we have done it in certain areas but not in the areas we would like. We are just delighted to get them back and firing again.

"It is a game-by-game situation now," he continued. "All we can afford to do is look at Saturday at Stoke. We need to go there and win. Then we need to follow that up. We need to maintain a run."

Indeed Phil!

Neville enthused by duo's return

Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes the return of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie will have a hugely positive effect on the squad.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/B1258C6204154C688FB0270664716E1E.ashx?h=270&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,97,1530,955

Both the star strikers made their comebacks from injury in Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Cardiff, Rooney replacing opening goalscorer van Persie just after the hour mark.

Neville believes the team’s recent struggles can largely be attributed to the absence of the pair, who haven’t started a match together since the 1-0 victory over Arsenal in November.

And the ex-skipper believes their return, as much as the arrival of Juan Mata, will provide a boost as the Reds seek a run of wins and climb the Barclays Premier League table.

Writing in his ambassador’s column for United Review before the Cardiff game, Neville said: "One of the biggest difficulties has been the absence of our two most clinical, ruthless players in attacking areas, Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney.

"They have played nine times together this season and we won seven of those games and drew two. They give Manchester United a cutting edge and firepower and the concerns that everybody has at the moment will be alleviated once they return.

"They will give confidence to the rest of the squad, and the important thing now is that they dig in and push forward for the rest of the season and try to deliver the level of performance that they’re capable of as players."

Gary Neville is so right.

Young: You have to impress

Ashley Young is aware the competition for places in the first team at Old Trafford is fierce and says he and his Manchester United team-mates know they must work hard to stay in contention for the starting XI.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/806FC9886900405983A8211B2E86376D.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,190,3000,1304

Young was on target with a fine low strike in the 2-0 victory over Cardiff City on Tuesday but claims he won't be resting on his laurels as he looks to cement a regular spot in David Moyes' side.

"You have to be on the ball," he told ManUtd.com and PA Sport. "You have to put in big performances every week. We have a big squad and we can rotate the team. When you are playing well, getting goals and assists, you are there in the manager's thoughts.

"We have competition for places and that keeps you on your toes. You want to keep playing well and training well, because that is the only way to keep yourself in the team."

The Reds' attack was further strengthened against the Bluebirds, with Robin van Persie finding the net on his return from injury and record signing Juan Mata making his debut after arriving from Chelsea.

"He is a goalscorer," Young said of van Persie. "You put him in the box and he will score, and he has done that again.

"There will be a lot of talk about Juan's arrival and the fact that we have broken the the transfer record for him, but he looks like he has been here for years. It was his first game but he has gelled straight away with the way we play. He is going to add something special to the squad."

Reds pair join Cardiff

Manchester United duo Fabio and Wilfried Zaha have completed permanent and loan moves to Cardiff City respectively.

David Moyes has allowed Fabio, who has been with the Reds since 2008, to join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side for an undisclosed fee after being unable to guarantee him regular football at Old Trafford.

The Brazilian defender told Cardiff's official website: "I’m very excited to be part of this and I’m looking forward to helping Cardiff.

"I know this is the right move for me. I spoke a lot to the manager about coming in and I know that I can help us move up the division."

Zaha, meanwhile, will play for the Bluebirds for the rest of the season and Moyes hopes the winger's temporary move will benefit United next term.

"I said right at the start of the season that if I could get Wilf the games, I'd keep him, but if I couldn't then I’d get him some games on loan," Moyes said.

"There were a few clubs who wanted him on loan but in the end we felt Cardiff was the right choice for him. Hopefully he will go and get those games, show what he can do in the Premier League and be ready to come back to us at the end of the season.

"He has real potential. He did terrifically well at Crystal Palace and that's why the club purchased him. The boy needs to keep his development going. If he can get those games at Cardiff then we can have a look at him in the Premier League and see exactly where he is.

"I couldn’t give him that at the start of the season and in the period I’ve been here so we’ll look at him now and see what he can do."

Farewell Fabio Da Silva:(, good luck to him at Cardiff and I hope that Wilfried Zaha does well with his loan spell.

Positive news on United injuries

Manchester United manager David Moyes is delighted to have Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie back in the squad, with Marouane Fellaini also expected to return to action soon.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/800F0BC83AE041FD97E5447995828576.ashx?h=270&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,335,1280,1052

Van Persie had missed 11 matches through injury until starting in Tuesday's win against Cardiff and took only six minutes to get on the scoresheet. He lasted until just beyond the hour mark, when he was replaced by Wayne Rooney, who also returning from a lengthy absence.

"I’ve got them back and it's great to have them," Moyes told journalists on Friday at the Aon Training Complex.

"We're mindful they're both coming back from injuries and we have to make sure they’re ready [before we give them 90 minutes].

"We’re a little bit more concerned about Robin because he’s been out longer; Wayne’s been out for a shorter period. We have to keep managing them and do things right."

Moyes is hopeful van Persie's ruthlessness in front of goal will help turn United's form around.

"I think some of our performances have been quite good [but] we just didn't finish our chances.

"When you want to win you need people like Robin van Persie, who will get you the winning goal. The other night, we started well and Robin got us a goal after six minutes.

"Did I think the performance was better than many of the other games? Actually, no I didn't. What I had was people who could win me the game and get me the goal at the right moments."

Moyes also revealed summer signing Marouane Fellaini was nearing a return, although stressed he wouldn't be fit for United's trip to Stoke on Saturday. The Belgian hasn't played since 4 December after undergoing an operation on his left wrist.

"Felli's on the fringes of things," Moyes said. "We need to get him a bit of match practice but he's very close as well."

Moyes happy with business

David Moyes says Manchester United will not bring in any more players before the end of the transfer window, but the boss is delighted with immediate impact of record signing Juan Mata.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/C55522DD11004F2AAFBDF32DCB93128E.ashx?h=270&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,227,3000,1910

The manager was speaking at his press briefing on Friday lunchtime, ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Stoke City, and he declared himself satisfied with the major piece of transfer business that the club did this month.

"There's no disappointment [that there will be no more transfers]. I said at the start that we wouldn’t do much business in January. There's no one reason for that."

Of the arrival of Mata from Chelsea, Moyes added: "He's everything I thought he was. He's a terrific footballer, a good lad to work with and he’s settled in quickly. He played well in the game, which was important because we wanted him to make a difference straight away. I'm wary that we need to give him time to settle in and not expect too much too soon, but I was impressed with his first game."

Wilfried Zaha has joined Cardiff City on loan until the end of the season, a move Moyes feels will help the winger realise his potential with its prospect of more regular match action.

"We felt Cardiff was the right choice for him. Hopefully he will go and get those games, show what he can do in the Premier League and be ready to come back to us at the end of the season," the manager added.

Us signing Mata was quality and a buzz, but the only downside is that we have a few more months of United's slow CM left. Positive news is that United will FINALLY strengthen on that weakness in the Summer!

Mata: Stoke hold no fear

Juan Mata insists he and his United team-mates will not be intimidated by Stoke's notoriously robust approach and is confident the Reds' quality will shine through when the sides meet this weekend.

The 25-year-old Spaniard made his United debut in the 2-0 win over Cardiff on Tuesday after completing his record move to Old Trafford last weekend. Mata now hopes to be involved again on Saturday at the Britannia Stadium in a game he says the Reds will relish.

"It has always been difficult to play against Stoke. But if you try to play quickly, you can get chances to score and put yourself in a good position," he told ManUtd.com and PA Sport.

"They like to play long balls and they are a physical team, but we just need to play our own game with the quality players we have."

When asked if the players would fear Stoke's battling approach Mata insisted the Reds are more than capable of holding their own.

"No, we won't be intimidated," he added. "The thing I like the most is to play. No matter what the stadium. I like to play in a stadium like this because it helps me to improve and I hope I can play a great game."

Carrick close but Nani still out

Michael Carrick is in line to return against Stoke City on Saturday but Nani could be sidelined for another month with his hamstring injury.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/0A4D7EB79AC04431AA7E5A8F82B4FAFE.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=0,83,1280,1037

Carrick missed Tuesday’s win over Cardiff City with an ankle problem but has progressed well in training. The news is less positive for winger Nani, who hasn’t played since early December.

Meanwhile, boss David Moyes revealed Rio Ferdinand will be in the squad for the trip to the Britannia Stadium and praised the defender for helping him at the start of his United reign.

Moyes said: "Nani has had a bad hamstring injury. He’s getting closer now but I think it will be another month until he will be about ready to play.

"Carrick is improving with his ankle and has got a good chance of being in the squad [on Saturday]. He’s improving and has done some training. We’ll just check to see if he can twist and turn correctly before we make a decision.

"Rio is back in training and in the squad as well. I’ll continue to use Rio at the right times when we think we can play him.

"He has made a great contribution, especially in the first half of the season. He played a big part in helping me settle and get my feet under the table a little bit.

"He’s got competition for places at centre-half but he is very much valued and looked at as one of the senior players here."

Moyes also said he would "probably" include Marouane Fellaini in United’s squad on Saturday and will give the summer signing plenty of chances to impress in the remainder of the season.

He gets treated too unfairly. Always thought that and always will. Not every midfielder is Zidane. He does a job and does it well. Not his fault he isn't played in a midfield 3 with a couple more penetrative mids. I still feel if he was Spanish and played for Barca(lol imagine) then people would probably wank at his pass completition and bill him as the underrated man of the machine. It's just England that jumps on this "lol passing sideways" thing.

Ryan57
11-02-2014, 05:30 PM
The only way he'd really work in a midfield three was if he was the anchor. As he has no creativity whatsoever. If he can only work in a midfield three, he's pointless to us. As we're stuck with an archaic 4-4-2 why ever useless Dave is still in charge.

For me, he's a squad player at best. Based on this season, he'd not even be good enough as that. However, seeing as though basically every player has stagnated, he can probably do a squad player role.

The annoying thing is he's gone totally backwards from the beginning of 2011/12. Whilst he wasn't going to be a Scholes type player in terms of spraying the ball around, he would make short, forward, passes. Pass and move. Actually create.

Rooney extends contract

- New deal commits striker to United until June 2019
- Player has "outstanding chance" to become club's all-time goalscorer
- Ambassadorial role after retirement

Wayne Rooney has committed his future to Manchester United by signing a four-year contract extension, keeping him at the club until June 2019. Wayne will also become a club ambassador when he retires from the game.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/77AA90DECA2A4FE395BD1B6D541C3BC0.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,52,1024,628

The 28 year-old striker, signed from Everton in August 2004, has played 430 games for United, scoring 208 goals, a record which already puts him fourth in the club's all-time goalscorer list behind Jack Rowley (211), Denis Law (237) and Bobby Charlton (249).

David Moyes said: "Wayne has been the best player in England since I put him into the Everton first team in 2003. Since becoming United manager in July last year, I have enjoyed working with him and seeing just how he has developed his incredible talent. With his ability, his experience and his desire to succeed, he is a vital part of my plans for the future and I'm absolutely thrilled he has accepted the challenge.

"I said last July that Wayne has an outstanding chance to be a true legend of this club's long and rich history. He is just 42 goals away from overtaking Sir Bobby our record goalscorer and becoming the first United player to hit 250 goals for the club. These opportunities only come to special players and I'm confident Wayne will set a new record that will take decades to reach. These are really exciting times for everyone connected with the club."

Wayne Rooney said: "I am made up to be staying at United. In August I will have been at the club for 10 years and during that time I have played with some fantastic players and won everything that I hoped I would when I first signed. I now have the chance as one of the club's senior players to help the younger players coming through and to be a part of another great United team.

"The fans have always been a huge part of this club and the support they have given me since my debut against Fenerbahce has been amazing. I am very grateful to all United fans around the world for their continued support.

"I am really excited to be a part of the club's future and want to thank David Moyes and Ed Woodward for their belief and support in me. I am convinced that this is the start of another successful chapter in Manchester United's history."

Break boosts players

David Moyes is confident his Manchester United squad will benefit from the recent warm-weather training camp during the closing stages of the season.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/EE978F89DB17414E9D4D6E4A3DF8E962.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,96,1530,959

The Reds flew out to the Middle East following last week's goalless draw with Arsenal and returned on Tuesday, feeling refreshed and ready for action ahead of Saturday's Barclays Premier League clash with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Speaking to the media at the Aon Training Complex on Friday, Moyes explained why time away with his squad was well spent. "It was great that we had some time together with the players - the first time I've really had the chance to have a few days with the lads.

"We trained and had some relaxation time as well, so it was good. You hope you get some benefit from it. I'm sure it will benefit the players, having the chance to relax. We'd have rather been in the FA Cup, let me tell you that, but we weren't so the next thing we had to do was get them ready for the 12 remaining league games."

United's match with the Eagles on Saturday is swiftly followed by a trip to Olympiacos in the UEFA Champions League and, as a result, Moyes is planning to utilise his entire squad with both fixtures in mind. However, the boss isn't taking either game lightly.

"We want to win [against Crystal Palace]," the boss explained. "We have another big game on Tuesday night as well. We play at 17:30 GMT and then again on Tuesday night. That's the way it is but we'll be ready.

"There's a squad here that's always been used to being rotated and used. That's why, lots of times, United have often been strong at the end of the season - they make sure players haven't played every game.

"So when the big games come in the end they have fresh players. We're fortunate with the squad we have here that we’ve been able to do that. We've tried to give everybody an opportunity to show what they can do as well, which is really important when you get a new manager in."

United future excites Rooney

Wayne Rooney says the future is bright for Manchester United and insists the Reds are heading in the right direction.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/F0A810A1C9364D649C7E2D590B1BC1E5.ashx?w=240&h=359&rgn=0,18,1424,2144

The striker signed a new four-year contract extension with the Reds on Friday in a deal that follows hot on the heels of Juan Mata’s £37.1 million transfer from Chelsea, providing a huge statement of intent from the club.

“The future is bright for Manchester United, this is still one of the world’s leading clubs," Wayne explains on his official website. "We have seen this with the signing of Juan Mata in January. People have been saying that we may have trouble attracting the world’s best players but I think the fact Mata came here shows this isn’t true.

“This is a new era for the club, we have a new management team and a great new manager in David Moyes. We have some great players and despite our recent form everyone has stuck together and the team spirit is good. We will continue to work hard and get Manchester United to the top where it belongs.”

While David Moyes' men are currently seventh in the Barclays Premier League, Rooney says the prospect of missing out on Champions League qualification had no impact on his decision to commit his long-term future to the club.

“I know that’s what some of the press thought but it’s not a massive concern for me. This is because I know the direction the club is going in and if we don’t make it this season then we will come back stronger and claim a Champions League spot next season."

Negotiations in a deal of this magnitude understandably took a while to complete, prompting speculation in the media that Rooney could leave Old Trafford. But now pen has finally been put to paper, the Reds no.10 is delighted and grateful to all those involved.

“If you believe everything you read in the papers it’s because I have been demanding to be captain and want an input into the club’s transfer policy, which is totally laughable and of course untrue,” Wayne explained.

“The talks have taken a while but that’s not unusual. It’s been a difficult time for the club and there has been a lot going on but the talks were positive from the start. There was great belief in me from David Moyes, Ed Woodward and the board, and also the Glazers. This made my decision a lot easier and I would like to thank them for that.

“My team-mates also played a big part in my decision. I’d like to thank them for their support and look forward to working with them. Most importantly, the fans have always supported me since I joined the club, through the good times and the bad times. They continued this support whilst the talks have been going on and I can’t thank them enough.”

Moyes: We deserved to win

David Moyes believes that Manchester United fully deserved the 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday, and was delighted to see his side pick up all three points.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/A03B4D94CE6C438EA09297AB18614682.ashx?w=480&h=179&rgn=0,388,2914,1475

Despite dominating for long periods during the game, the Reds' breakthrough didn't arrive until just after the hour mark, when Robin van Persie fired home from the penalty spot following a foul on Patrice Evra.

Moyes says he expected a tough test against a determined Palace defence, but believes his side's performance was deserving of maximum points in south London.

"Crystal Palace, since Tony Pulis took over, has been a difficult place for anyone to come," Moyes told Sky Sports. "They haven't conceded many goals and they made themselves hard to beat again. Thankfully, we got two goals in the second half.

"In the Premier League, getting the first goal is always crucial. The way we played, we thoroughly deserved it. We had made some opportunities, and it was certainly deserved."

Wayne Rooney's unstoppable half-volley settled the contest with 20 minutes remaining, and moved him to within 40 goals of Sir Bobby Charlton's record as the club's all-time top scorer.

The United boss was full of praise for Rooney after the game, and he believes the striker can go on to make history at Old Trafford, after signing a contract extension earlier this week.

"The finish for the second goal was exquisite. Patrice [Evra] did really well to get to the byline and it was a great finish.

"He [Rooney] is a really important player. If you think about the amount of clubs who wanted to sign him, he would have been too difficult to replace. There aren't enough good players out there that you can bring in cheaply or easily. Wayne's one of the top players, he shows it every week. You can see the change in him as a boy, with the leadership that he’s trying to bring to the team. We're on his case, we want him to continue and I'm sure he will, he's a boy who wants to keep getting better.

"He's got a great chance [to make history at the club]. Wayne's been playing unbelievably well this season, let's hope he keeps it up and continues scoring goals.

"I said to everyone from day one that he came in and trained well, he’s never been a problem, and I think the credit should go to the owners for making a stand to keep the best players. We're building a new team, we're keeping the good players, and we'll be adding to it. I think the owners and the board deserve the credit for the deal."

Rooney hails vital win

Wayne Rooney felt it was important that Manchester United made the most of the team's possession against Crystal Palace and clinically took the chances to claim all three points at Selhurst Park.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/337BC6085EDF43029284D4F95B24CF01.ashx?w=480&h=179&rgn=0,56,1530,627

After Robin van Persie had given the Reds the lead from the penalty spot when Patrice Evra had been fouled in the area by Marouane Chamakh, Rooney hit a beautiful shot into the top corner to seal a solid win.

"Today was a big result for us," Rooney said after the game. "We haven't played in 10 days so it was an important game. It was a good victory, I thought we played well and moved the ball well. It was a good win.

"It had [been tough]. We moved the ball well and could have created more chances," he added on Sky Sports. "Overall, we had it under control and we knew that once we got a goal we could get another and see the game out. It's always important, it's tough to get that first goal, thankfully Robin stuck the penalty away. We managed to get a second and thankfully we got the three points."

Rooney netted his first goal since appearing on the scoresheet against Hull City on Boxing Day, it was an impressive strike, letting Evra's cross from the left move across him but guiding the ball into the top corner. The United no.10 insists his new contract extension had no bearing on his overall performance.

"I just tried to do well for the team and to help us win. Whether I've signed a new deal or not, I always try and give 110% on the pitch and that's what I did," he added. "For my goal, the ball was set up nicely. I knew that if I got decent contact on it, I had a chance. Thankfully it's gone in."

Evra hails job well done

Patrice Evra was happy to praise his team mates following Manchester United's hard-earned 2-0 win at Crystal Palace.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/05F3D3CC50424A7A8418FFC0AE38E5D8.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,129,1692,1082

The France international was involved in both goals, with a penetrating run ended by a foul from Marouane Chamakh to earn a penalty that Robin van Persie coolly converted.

Then a pull-back from the byline was superbly volleyed home by Wayne Rooney to double the lead six minutes later. In defence, he helped the Reds to a second straight clean sheet.

"It was job done," Evra told MUTV. "It was really important, we have had some bad results and tonight we could not afford another defeat. I think we saw a strong Manchester United, confident to play with the ball, and I'm really pleased for all the lads."

Evra was selected as Man of the Match by Sky Sports, while Rooney got the nod from the club’s fans via its social media channels, but the left-back was firmly focused on the needs of the team.

"I'm happy to help the team, but most important was the team performance. It does not matter if I'm Man of the Match. I'm just happy with the three points because what matters to me is Man United winning, not Patrice Evra winning Man of the Match.

Rooney's brilliantly-taken goal also earned the seal of approval from the 32-year-old, who is delighted the striker has signed his new long-term contract with the Reds.

"What a great finish it was, my cross was not easy to take, but it was a great volley," added Evra. "He deserved to have a big contract. I’m so happy for him because he is working hard, and it's a good sign for the future of Manchester United, for the fans and for everyone. I'm really pleased with Wazza because he deserves it."

The win over Palace also featured the centre-back pairing of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand starting for the first time since the draw with Real Sociedad on 5 November, and Evra said their experience shone through on a potentially tricky evening in South London.

"It's good to have them back, they looked really strong tonight. We had a lot of experience, and, when Rio came on at Arsenal, I thought he was fantastic. You could see tonight with Rio and Vida in good form that we can be solid and get more clean sheets. But don't forget Chris Smalling can play there, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans can get back from injury. We have good centre-backs and that's important for the team."

I love Patrice Evra's interviews and ways with words.

Moyes checks on trio

David Moyes will check on the fitness of defensive trio Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Rafael before finalising his plans for the Champions League trip to Olympiacos.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/CF2E4549EADD485E924B6BB26FD9EA27.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,27,1367,797

The Reds fly to Greece on Monday for the first leg of the last 16 encounter on the back of a convincing win at Crystal Palace thanks to second-half goals from Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney.

Evans, Jones and Rafael all missed the victory in the capital but United still kept a clean sheet.

"We’ve got a few injuries but I’m hoping we might get a few of them back for Tuesday," stated the boss. "We’ll get a chance to see how Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Rafael are on Sunday and see if they can join us.

"We’ve got a tough European game coming up on Tuesday now. I wanted to win [at Palace] so we could go into it in form and with confidence. It’s such a big game for us. We hadn’t played for 10 days before Saturday, so I wanted to make sure all the players were ready and will be ready to perform again on Tuesday."

Hopefully there is good news:).

Moyes targets European crown

David Moyes says his Manchester United players will do their utmost to win this season's UEFA Champions League, though the boss is wary of overlooking Tuesday's round of 16 opponents Olympiacos.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/DB2C42DF369F449BA68AD70C5EC70362.ashx?w=480&h=179&rgn=0,100,1597,693

United sailed through the group stages of the prestigious competition with 14 points from a possible 18 - finishing comfortably ahead of Bayer Leverkusen, Shakhtar Donetsk and Real Sociedad - to book a second round tie with the Greek champions. While the boss acknowledges it will be difficult to go all the way to Lisbon, where the showpiece finale will be held, he believes United’s pedigree in Europe makes the club a force to be reckoned with.

“Everybody wants to win it and we’ll try to do it," Moyes says. "I never said we would or we can but we’ll be in there. Teams don’t want to play Manchester United. They know what it stands for as they have been successful. I hope we can play well enough to get through this round and see what happens next."

Olympiacos will face United without former top scorer Konstantinos Mitroglou, who signed for Fulham in January. While that sale has obvious benefits, Moyes concedes it also poses a scouting dilemma.

“They are really good and have had a great record. They are undoubtedly the best team in Greece, no question about it. They also have a lot of Greek internationals who will go to the World Cup and it will be a really tough game," he added.

“Mitroglou was a really good goalscorer for them and a main player. Does it weaken them? I think they’d rather have him than not but probably felt the offer was so good they had to take it. Since then, they’ve brought in two or three other players as well and I couldn’t be sure who will and won’t play.”

Rooney's hopes for fab four

Wayne Rooney is hoping Manchester United's exciting attacking quartet can keep improving in the coming weeks.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/1D48126478F6424DABB073192E8B196B.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,228,4266,2636

Adnan Januzaj's inclusion in Saturday's 2-0 triumph at Crystal Palace ensured he, Rooney, Robin van Persie and record buy Juan Mata started a match together for the first time. The line-up had fans salivating at the prospect of seeing the new 'fab four' in action and there were encouraging signs at Selhurst Park.

"We've been working hard in training on doing that [having a good understanding]," Rooney told MUTV. "Making sure we keep the ball better around their penalty box and then trying to create chances. I thought we did it quite well. It can better but I thought we did well and I’m really pleased."

Rooney's outstanding strike was a first of 2014 for the fit-again striker and ensures he heads into Tuesday's Champions League tie at Olympiacos in confident mood.

"Sometimes they can be difficult coming across your body," he explained. "Thankfully, I got a nice connection on it. It went in so obviously I’m delighted.

"Tuesday is a massive game for us. We want to be going into the quarter-finals of the Champions League. It’ll be tough but we’ll get the Palace match out of our system, prepare well and we’ll be ready."

Rooney gets Vidic's support

Nemanja Vidic has backed Wayne Rooney to play a key role at Manchester United after signing his new deal and would not be surprised if he becomes captain.

http://images.football365.com/13/08/4-3/20/vidic_2994422.jpg

Vidic is the current skipper at Old Trafford but will be moving on at the end of the season and David Moyes will have to choose someone new to wear the armband.

Rooney is a leading candidate after this week putting pen to paper on a long-term contract extension to commit his future to United until 2019.

Vidic believes it was vital for the club to secure the striker's services and has given his support to the England international.

"Wayne is a big player and it is important for him to stay," Vidic told Sky Sports News after Rooney celebrated his new deal with a goal in Saturday's 2-0 victory at Crystal Palace.

"Wayne has signed a long-term contract and he will be one of the most important players in the next few years."

Questioned on the possibility of Rooney replacing him as captain, Vidic added: "Obviously it is the manager's decision and he has to choose his captain.

"Wayne is one of the leaders in the team and I will not be surprised if he becomes captain."

Rafael voted star man

Rafael picked up Manchester United's Man of the Match award for his impressive display in the 3-0 win over West Brom on Saturday.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/E157131EFA0B4CABACF042719CAD3C5E.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,85,1240,782

The young Brazilian was influential at both ends of the pitch, providing a brilliant cross for United's second, to finish ahead of Wayne Rooney and defensive partner Phil Jones on the club's official Twitter account.

MUTV pundits Sammy McIlroy and Lou Macari singled out the trio after witnessing the victory at The Hawthorns, but Rafael was the clear winner with 49 per cent of the vote.

On his return to the side, the defender almost found the net early on but his header was superbly tipped on to the bar by former team-mate Ben Foster.

Rooney, who received 37 per cent of the vote, scored on the road for the second time in as many league games after heading home Rafael's cross, while an assured performance by Phil Jones earned him the remaining 14 per cent.

Rafael form delights boss

Manchester United manager David Moyes was keen to praise Rafael's performance in the 3-0 victory against West Brom.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/B0CC1B3602234C7CA18493C2690091D2.ashx?w=240&h=179&rgn=0,71,1604,1266

The Brazilian returned to the side at right-back and was in excellent form, forcing Ben Foster to tip a header onto the bar, winning the free-kick that led to Phil Jones' opener and crossing superbly for Wayne Rooney to head in.

By also defending impressively, including making one wonderful block in the closing stages, there is little doubt that Rafael was the right man to pick up the fans' official Man-of-the-Match award on Twitter.

"I've got to mention Rafa," the manager told MUTV. "He picked out a great cross for Wayne's goal and was involved in the build-up to the first one as well. He probably should have scored one or two himself maybe when he got around the back in the first half.

"There were some really good performances in the team. Much better than I've seen for a while."

Rafael was replaced by Nemanja Vidic after picking up a knock towards the end of a satisfying afternoon for the Reds.

"I think he got a kick on the ankle," added Moyes. "That is what I was told - he'd taken a kick in a tackle with 10 minutes to go. He was limping so I didn't want to risk it any more."

Carrick hails control

Michael Carrick says Manchester United found the balance between controlling possession and making it count in front of goal as the Reds confidently beat West Bromwich Albion 3-0 at The Hawthorns.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/087222E04CA046339625F28C7EFFDF27.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,51,1530,914

David Moyes' team have often started games well this season, dictating the play without taking full advantage by creating and converting chances. That wasn’t the case on Saturday against Pepe Mel’s admittedly struggling Baggies side, but regardless of the opposition’s perilous league placing, Carrick was pleased with the display.

“It was an important day for us, we had to bounce back,” Carrick told ManUtd.com. “It feels like such a long time since the last game [against Olympiacos] before the international matches, so we had to perform and really show that we are a good team.

“I thought we scored at crucial times in the game to really take control of it. It’s been frustrating this season because, at times, performance-wise we have controlled matches and haven’t come away with the results we wanted. You strive for the performances and want the results to follow, today it did.

"We looked really dangerous going forward, we had really good penetration through the pitch and caused them problems all afternoon. We looked exciting going forward.”

Phil Jones gave United a first-half lead with a powerful header from Robin van Persie’s inswinging free-kick. Then, after the break, the game turned a tad physical as West Brom attempted to battle their way back into the contest. United weathered the storm and Wayne Rooney doubled the lead shortly after the hour, heading home Rafael’s cross.

“That second goal was important,” added Carrick. “It was always going to be feisty here with both teams needing results; we wouldn’t expect to come here and cruise through the game. They’re trying to get three points just as much as we are. The pitch was difficult to play on – it was bouncy and a bit lively. There was a spell in the game where it got quite scrappy and we just had to weather that. Wayne got his goal at a good time and that killed the game off.”

Of course, substitute Danny Welbeck scored late on to complete a bright spring afternoon’s work for United, with a clean sheet into the bargain.

“It’s a tough place to come, so to win like we have is a big positive,” concluded Carrick. “We looked dangerous going forward and we defended well. All in all, we couldn’t have asked for much more from our performance.”

Boss pleased with display

David Moyes felt Manchester United excelled on a difficult surface against West Brom and looked a real threat throughout at The Hawthorns.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/0A5F3967183B47F19A8C23211716E557.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,668,1701,1620

The Reds returned to the scene of Sir Alex Ferguson's final game in charge and headed home with the three points on this occasion to avenge the surprise loss at Old Trafford earlier in the campaign.

With Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Adnan Januzaj all selected, there was plenty of flair in the starting line-up, but the defensive work of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling also earned credit from the manager.

"I thought Robin and Wayne were excellent," said Moyes. "Mata and Adnan too, but we also needed a good defensive performance as well so, all round, I’m pleased.

"The pitch was very lively, it was drying out a little bit and it wasn’t that easy to pass the ball, but we looked much more potent going forward and looked more likely to score than we have in other games. I made the point about us trying to attack more and have better play going forward and I think we did that.

"I thought Smalling and Jones played really well," he opined. "Smalling was excellent by all accounts for England too, while Jones is a very good player. He's been out for a month and we needed to try to get him some minutes as we've got some big games coming up. We needed to make sure he's ready to play and they both did a great job.

"[For the first goal] it was a really good header by Phil after Rafael did good work down the right and got the free-kick. Robin's delivery was excellent and, thankfully, Phil got across his defender and scored."

Moyes explained the decision to substitute van Persie after the striker was lectured by referee Jon Moss when already on a yellow card following a robust tackle on Steven Reid.

"I thought it was a foul but it did not warrant a yellow card," explained Moyes to MUTV. "I was always taking him off anyway because he played 90 minutes for Holland in midweek. I actually told him in the hotel that I'd try to get him off at the right time in the game so it made the decision easy. I couldn't afford him to have another challenge and give the referee a decision to make."

Rooney: We deserved win

Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United fully deserved to beat West Brom on Saturday and says the result will give the Reds a welcome confidence boost.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/500FEE4D12B047129C30EA8B7751A36A.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=346,0,1183,470

The striker headed home after the break after Phil Jones had opened the scoring in the first half. Danny Welbeck came off the bench to add a third and seal the victory, and Rooney believes the win could be vital ahead of some tough upcoming fixtures.

"It is a confidence-booster," he told BT Sport. "We’ve got Liverpool and Olympiacos next, where we’re two goals behind [after the first leg], followed by West Ham and Manchester City. They’re all big games. It’s a good challenge and it’s down to us as players to take that challenge on and show everyone we’re a good team that means business.

“We were hurt after the Olympiacos game, and we needed to go out and show everyone that we are a good team. We’ll fight for the shirt, and we’ll fight for a place in the team, and I think that showed today. We played with a great energy, we were exciting and we always looked a threat, so I think we deserved the three-goal win. And it could have been more."

Rooney praised the battling qualities shown by his team-mates and was pleased to get on the scoresheet at The Hawthorns with a goal that moves him to within just one of Jack Rowley on the club's list of all-time top scorers.

“We had to scrap at times, " added the striker. "Nothing seemed to be going for us in the first half and we didn't seem to get the decisions so we had to fight through that. Thankfully, we got the goal through Phil Jones and went in at half-time knowing we had to finish the game off because it’s always tough coming here. To get the second goal was great, and I thought we saw the game out quite well."

Jones' praise for Fellaini

Phil Jones was full of praise for Marouane Fellaini after the Belgian’s powerful display in Manchester United’s 3-0 win at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/F8033B9D53F2401C89F2B3260A892161.ashx?w=240&h=179&rgn=0,129,1499,1246

A forward quartet of Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Juan Mata and Adnan Januzaj drew praise for an eye-catching attacking display at The Hawthorns, where the Reds were excellent after the break.

Jones, Rooney and Danny Welbeck got the goals but the former was also quick to point out the importance of Fellaini’s contribution alongside Michael Carrick in United’s midfield.

"Fellaini was terrific in breaking up the play and playing the ball forward," Jones told MUTV. "He showed why the manager brought him in and there’s a lot more to come from him – he’s a quality player."

Fellaini himself added: "I enjoy playing with Michael. I know he’ll sit back if I go to the edge of the box to try to score.

"Everyone is happy today. The team played well and that is good for confidence. We have to keep going like this in the next game."

Jones played alongside Chris Smalling in central defence and said of the partnership: "I enjoy playing with Chris.

"We haven’t played that many times together but the more we play, the better our understanding will be and the better our performances will be."

Of his headed goal, Jones added: "It was a great ball by Robin and I managed to guide it into the net – it didn’t need any power as the pace was in the cross.

"We’ve now got a good week’s training ahead of us and hopefully we can put in some good sessions and prepare well for the next games."

Welbeck will be needed

Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley will have key parts to play in the remainder of the season, according to Manchester United manager David Moyes.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/A5EBB7CE52CC4B29AEB1D00DE927D6E0.ashx?w=480&h=179&rgn=0,74,1590,666

The two homegrown talents are hoping to represent England in the World Cup finals and are determined to prove their worth at domestic level ahead of this summer's showpiece tournament in Brazil.

Welbeck came off the bench against West Brom on Saturday to display a cool head in front of goal, stroking in the third goal at The Hawthorns when Jonas Olsson was unable to cut out Wayne Rooney's through ball.

"Wayne played him in with a great pass before then but it was a bit of a narrow angle and the pitch was really lively," explained Moyes to MUTV. "When he was played in down the side, he opened up and finished terrifically well. I'm pleased Danny is looking sharper and getting back ready. We're going to need him."

Cleverley was not involved in the 3-0 triumph on Saturday with the boss explaining the thinking behind the decision.

"I just felt he wasn't required today," he stated. "I wanted to make sure Darren Fletcher and Ryan Giggs were involved. We've got a lot of big games coming up and Tom will be involved in a lot of these in the coming weeks."

I agree, he has the potential to improve and I feel sorry for him with this abuse. People are entitled to their opinions, but it is getting OTT now.

Obviously the Managers he is playing under for both United and England see something in him and the players like him, so that is one positive he can take from this tough situation.

Mata's blog: One fine away day

Each week, Juan Mata keeps Manchester United fans around the world up to date with his own personal blog. Here's an extract from this week's piece...

Our win on Saturday - 3-0 at West Brom - was really important.

I'm talking about the three points, of course, but also about the performance. We saw samples of what the team is capable of, and we got very positive feelings.

I enjoyed myself on the pitch and at the end of the day that's what you want when you play football. At all levels.

I would like to highlight our three consecutive clean sheets in the league. It's important for our work not to concede, as that eventually will take us closer to our goals. In order to reinforce that we have a great challenge ahead this coming weekend: Liverpool at Old Trafford.

The so-called North West Derby is always a big game in England, even more this season if you look at the league table.

At this stage, every match is important. There are less and less games to play and we want to get all the points. I hope we continue to play the way we did on Saturday and delight the fans.

I want to thank you, the fans, for the Manchester United Player of the Month award I was honoured to receive last week. It means a lot to me because it's voted for by you. This award gives me so much confidence and I hope it will be the first of many.

Carrick relishes Liverpool clash

Manchester United kicked off a mammoth month of March with a 3-0 away win over West Brom but now the tension is ramped up with a run of home games that takes in league clashes with Liverpool and Manchester City, sandwiching the Champions League last-16 second leg against Olympiacos.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/F0A051060E5F4BC282B222FAB2F4E4D8.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,0,1650,929

"It's a big month ahead, we're well aware of that,” Michael Carrick told ManUtd.com after helping the Reds to beat the Baggies on Saturday. “It’s Liverpool next and that's a big one. Regardless of where both teams are in the league it’s an important fixture.

“In recent times, with this rivalry, we’ve been on top of them in the league and it's the other way around at the moment. But I don’t think league places affect the game. We’d say it if we’re top of the table that form goes out of the window against Liverpool, it counts for very little, and that’s the case now. It should be a good game and we’re all looking forward to it.”

United’s performance against West Brom brought with it plenty of promise – a display which combined a solid defensive foundation with good possession play and, crucially, the taking of chances when they arose. That followed on from a solid display against Crystal Palace in the league, with Carrick describing the subsequent 2-0 defeat to Olympiacos as an anomaly, not the norm.

“I know we’ve had an up and down season but I think performance-wise in recent times we’ve been pretty good," Carrick told us. "That Olympiacos game was a bit of a shock to everyone and afterwards we just wanted to get back to where we were. I thought we did that against West Brom, so we need to build on that now."

Two players who were crucial in the victories over Crystal Palace and West Brom are still relatively new additions to the squad – Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini. Mata’s wand of a left foot inspires creativity in attacking areas, while Fellaini is beginning to prove to be the midfield minder he was brought in to be. Both men could play in their first United-Liverpool fixture this coming Sunday, introducing them to a rivalry like few others in the English game.

“Juan and Marouane both did really well against West Ham,” said Carrick. “That’s two league games in a row now in which they’ve both performed well – Palace and now West Brom. But while they did well individually, I thought collectively, as a team, we looked really dangerous going forward.

“The performance against West Brom was better than the one at Palace, so that's something we have to take forward into some big games in this important month.”

Rooney proud to be a leader

Wayne Rooney has revealed he would jump at the chance to be a future Manchester United captain and admits he enjoys being one of the Reds' senior squad members.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/1342E6CFE21C4AA6B57D7D4CA1C66F34.ashx?w=240&h=359&rgn=483,0,1353,1299

In an exclusive interview with April's Inside United magazine, the striker discussed his role in the side and increased responsibility as he prepares to mark a decade at Old Trafford in August. With Nemanja Vidic leaving for Inter Milan in the summer, there has been speculation that David Moyes could consider the no.10 as a long-term candidate for the armband.

Although keen to stress the manager has a number of options, Rooney admits it is an honour he would relish if the opportunity to skipper the club arose.

"I've done it a few times and, if the manager wants me to be the captain, I would have no problem with that," he explained. "I would take it with both hands. However, it is down to the manager, because it's his decision on whoever he feels is the right person to lead the team. I'm sure he'll make that decision when the time comes.

"I think, whether you've got the armband or not, I always feel I'm quite vocal on the pitch. I try to help the players when I feel I can and say what I think. I believe that's the most important thing, to be honest and say what you feel. If you say what you believe are the right things, you need to keep doing that."

Rooney is already acting as a role model to some of the younger players and revealed he is keen to assist Adnan Januzaj with his development.

"I've stayed out after training with Adnan a few times," he added. "Even just working on free-kicks and crossing. It actually benefits me as well and it benefits him.

"I am trying to help him get better and better, which I feel he is doing, and I think young players need to practise all the time, especially coming into the side. Senior players also need to keep practising to stay on top of their game so it works for both of us."

Neville relishes Liverpool clash

Phil Neville says the intensity of Manchester United's rivalry with Liverpool has never dropped, regardless of their varying fortunes over the years.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/2378FEEA24B048FDB60C1C6E76597F06.ashx?w=240&h=179&rgn=0,47,1948,1499

The Reds welcome Brendan Rodgers' second-placed side to Old Trafford on Sunday, looking for victory to close an 11-point gap in the Barclays Premier League table.

The sides have beaten each other once this season, with United knocking Liverpool out of the Capital One Cup at home in September, three weeks after going down 1-0 in the league clash at Anfield.

It's a fixture first-team coach Neville has always relished, having played against the Merseysiders 15 times as a player with United.

"When I was in the United first team, Liverpool was the biggest game," Neville says in the latest issue of Inside United.

"The rivalry between the two teams was intense. Both clubs have great history and great success, which always made for some cracking matches. These are the games all the fans want to watch and all the players want to play in.

"Funnily enough, you normally find the little knocks and injuries players are carrying die down in the week leading up to the match. Suddenly, everybody's fit because everybody wants to play!

"This year, Liverpool have had a great season and it'll be a fantastic game but, as always, we'll be looking for maximum points."

RvP pledge pleases Moyes

David Moyes expressed his satisfaction after Robin van Persie declared he wants to stay at Manchester United in an interview with United Review.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/4C8FA5AC3088405481CD4094D47C8377.ashx?w=480&h=179&rgn=0,98,1304,584

There had been rumours in the media that van Persie was unhappy at the club and was looking to leave at the end of the season. But in an interview published on ManUtd.com on Thursday night, van Persie set the record straight.

Moyes is pleased the striker wants to stay beyond his current contract, and is looking forward to seeing more of his partnership with Wayne Rooney.

The manager said to journalists at a press conference on Friday afternoon: "I’ve been telling you that [he’s staying] but you’ve wanted to say or write something different.

"It’s difficult if you don’t believe what I say. Robin is happy here and I’m pleased about that. I didn’t know what was coming out – I’ve only just heard this morning about it.

"We’ll take it as it is. He has a couple of years to go on his contract and I’m sure that will be something the board look at.

"I’ve always said we’ve got two outstanding forwards in Wayne and Robin. Both have capabilities of winning games off their own back. They’re both pivotal international players and the sort of players any side in the world would want in their team.

"I’m delighted to have both of them and, more importantly, that they both want to be Manchester United players."

Rooney: We have to step up

Wayne Rooney admits it is hard for everybody associated with Manchester United to observe the title race - especially as Manchester City and Sunday's opponents Liverpool are among the teams battling it out at the top.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/16ACDA0524F84036BF0C82062BFD5D5A.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,80,2685,1591

The Reds have endured a difficult campaign and are currently sixth in the Barclays Premier League, 18 points off first place with only one game in hand. When asked if the local rivals' superior form has made it difficult for United fans, Rooney told Inside United magazine:

"Yes it has - and for the players as well. It's not nice when we know we are capable of being up there challenging and we haven’t been doing that this season. It is really difficult to see City doing well - and particularly Liverpool, who have kicked on."

In the same exclusive interview, the striker explained how the current state of play between United, Liverpool and City makes his team-mates even more determined to finish the season strongly and to resume normal service next term.

"It means we have to step up and get back up there, because the feeling we have had this season when we're not doing so well is not a nice feeling at all to have," said Rooney.

"We have to keep working, keep progressing and finish the season stronger. Hopefully we can make that top four but, if not, we will still come back firing next season.”

Rooney was typically bullish when asked if driving United back to the top will be the biggest challenge of his career so far.

“No, I just think we’ve had a disappointing campaign," he replied. "But we will bounce back. I am sure of that.

“We have to focus on trying to get into the top four and retrieving the two-goal deficit against Olympiacos," Wayne continued.

"If not, we’ll bounce back next season and be up there challenging again.”

Moyes boosted by Nani return

Nani has returned to training to boost David Moyes’ midfield options ahead of Sunday’s Barclays Premier League blockbuster with Liverpool at Old Trafford.

The winger has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury during the 1-0 defeat to Newcastle on 7 December, a blow that has forced him to miss the following 19 fixtures.

However, while speaking to the media at the Aon Training Complex on Friday, Moyes gave a positive update on the talented Portuguese and three other injured Reds.

“Nani is back. He had a really bad hamstring injury. But he is back and has trained. Hopefully we get him up to speed very quickly,” the boss said. “Rafael, Javier Hernandez and Jonny Evans are all coming along. They all have a chance of playing on Sunday.”

Moyes also discussed his centre-backs, praising Phil Jones and Chris Smalling for their recent form while touching on the benefits of using Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.

“I’m pleased with the young boys. We’ve had great service from Rio and Vida and we're using them because we need their experience. With the amount of games we have coming up we’re going to need them to be fit and healthy.”

Rooney works much better with Mata and Kagawa than with RVP. RVP is a better Striker than Rooney, but IMO Rooney is a better player overall in terms of his versatility.

I really do think United are prepared to spend big in the Summer, things are looking up a bit in terms of news recently despite our awful season, which is one of transition and kind of expected.

The news of a new mega deal Nike sponsorship deal is going to be expected at some point too- £70 million a year the press are reporting. Nike obviously don't want to lose United and both have a good business relationship.

He'd work in a 4-2-3-1 on the right. That should be the formation we play from now on. Not the totally outdated 4-4-2.

Moyes ponders transfers

Manchester United manager David Moyes has revealed he’s "getting prepared" for the summer transfer market and may look to make signings before the start of the World Cup.

http://ww.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/BBD8E7BF4A304A7E9BEB00DCECEEEE29.ashx?w=240&h=179&rgn=78,0,1734,1231

Brazil 2014 kicks off on 12 June and it's believed many clubs will try to do their main transfer business before it begins, to head off the inevitable surge of interest should their targets star for their countries.

Moyes has made no secret of his desire to strengthen his squad in the close season and, while he can’t do much business yet, he’s already thinking about potential incomings.

Asked by reporters if he wanted to sign players before the World Cup, he said: "Yeah, I might do. We are getting ourselves prepared now.

"We can't do an awful lot until the end of the season but we will prepare as much as possible. You don’t always get all your ducks in a row but we will try to get as many of them as we can.

"I know it has been difficult for a lot of people to accept and understand what is going on but we will make changes. We have said that now and everyone is well aware of it."

Moyes rejected the suggestion that Robin van Persie’s desire to stay at United will help him bring in new players.

"I don’t think Robin saying that makes it any more of an attractive proposition for players," the boss added. "It just tells you that people have tried to find reasons why things haven't gone as well for us.

"A lot were saying that was down to Robin van Persie or the manager but I always said that wasn't the case and hopefully now you have heard it from Robin as well."

Liverpool clash still top

Manchester United and Liverpool still merits the highest billing in English football, according to David Moyes.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/1D40F8F3F79845BF82FA71748D69C3BE.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,36,1500,878

United can dent the second-placed Merseysiders’ title hopes with victory at Old Trafford on Sunday, a fact that will add more spice to what is always a keenly-contested encounter.

Manchester City’s rise in recent seasons has elevated the importance of the crosstown derby for many Reds but as far as Moyes is concerned, Liverpool remains the big one.

"I think it’s the biggest game in the Premier League," the manager told journalists. "There has been great history between the two clubs over a long period.

"Every game of football is important and any game that features United and Liverpool is massively important.

"[Winning on Sunday] would be a big boost. It would be an important three points. We’ve played them twice this year and they’ve been tight games."

Asked if it was accurate to say Liverpool are favourites to win on Sunday, Moyes replied: "It may well be. Their league position suggests they’re ahead of us and they possibly do come here as favourites.

"Liverpool are having a very good season. They’re our next game at home and we have to do all we possibly can to beat them. We’ve got big games coming up this month so it will be important."

Liverpool are seven points behind Barclays Premier League leaders Chelsea with a game in hand but Moyes insists he’s not motivated by the potential to stop them winning the title.

"Our motivation is to make sure we keep progressing," he said. "I think we’ve played well in recent weeks with the exception of Olympiacos. We’ve been progressing and improving.

"Continuing to improve is the most important thing for me and we want to see signs of that. I see signs of it in training. The players are looking well and sharp."

Rooney backs RvP alliance

Wayne Rooney understands why his partnership with Robin van Persie is scrutinised in the media and the Manchester United striker says both men are working hard to prove their critics wrong.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/99D66052F0AE4BD3BE8E22E7F36A0E13.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,0,512,288

Although Rooney and Van Persie have scored 27 goals between them this season, not to mention another 46 during the title-winning 2012/13 campaign, their relationship has come under the microscope following a number of disappointing results.

During an exclusive interview with MUTV ahead of Sunday’s match against Liverpool, Wayne was asked to discuss his work with Robin.

“I think we are doing alright. Obviously, we can do better and if we are not at the top of the league then that will get looked at and we understand that," Wayne explained. "Personally, we can score more goals and we know we can. We are working hard to do that, we have to keep going and hopefully that will come.”

Liverpool visit Old Trafford with Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge in white-hot form, having scored 45 goals between them. Although Rooney does not enjoy seeing United's great rivals riding so high in the table, the 28-year-old is begrudgingly impressed by both strikers.

“I think they are both fantastic players and obviously it is good to see Sturridge doing well because he has never really had a chance at his previous clubs,” Wayne explained. “Brendan Rodgers has given him a chance and he has taken it with both hands. That is good for England as well.

“Suarez, for me, is up there with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as one of the best players in the world. He has been that good and the two of them together have been in great form this season. We will have to do everything we can to stop them on Sunday.”

This weekend’s game is the second of six important fixtures in March, a run of games that includes high-profile collisions with Olympiacos and local rivals Manchester City. While some players might be intimidated by such a sequence, Rooney can’t wait to get started.

“It is a massive couple of weeks for us with the Liverpool, City and Olympiacos games standing out,” Wayne explained. “It could be a massive two weeks for us if we can get the right results. It would put us back on track and keep us with a chance of getting into that top four.

“We know how important these games are and we have worked really hard in training to make sure we are ready for them. We are just looking forward to the Liverpool game on Sunday now.”

Moyes hopes Reds can deliver

David Moyes is urging his Manchester United players to show what they’re capable of during a potentially pivotal ten days, starting against Liverpool on Sunday.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/EE978F89DB17414E9D4D6E4A3DF8E962.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,96,1530,959

The Reds host Brendan Rodgers' side at Old Trafford with Moyes admitting on Friday that the visitors go into the game as slight favourites. Olympiacos, in the second leg of the Champions League last 16, are up next on Wednesday with the Greeks holding a 2-0 advantage from the first leg, before a trip to West Ham next Saturday and a Manchester derby meeting with City at home three days later.

Moyes has seen positive signs from his players in recent weeks and in training, and hopes the Reds can come through the testing spell with a string of good results.

“Positive results in the games coming up would make a big, big difference and that’s what we’ll be trying to achieve,” he told reporters. “I hope we can show what we’re capable of in those matches which I think we can win.

“The players have shown that to me recently and with the exception of the Olympiacos game I actually think we’ve played quite well. If we park that game I think we’ve not been in a bad run of form and have had some good results.

“The players have an opportunity to go and show they’re improving. I think they played well at West Brom and there have been signs that they have been doing better. Our away form has been pretty good, but it’s at Old Trafford where we need to pick ourselves up and play better. We’ve made the opportunities and got into lots of positions to score but we’ve not done it. I hope we can show our best in the remaining games.”

There has been a lot of talk about United’s chances of getting into Europe, be it through the Champions League or Europa League, while others have pointed out how Sunday’ s opponents Liverpool have benefited from being able to focus fully on domestic football this term. Moyes, however, is defiant in his stance on qualifying for Europe, no matter which route.

“I’m planning to be in Europe,” he insisted. “I want to be in Europe and I’m planning to win the games to get in there.”

Vidic focused on job in hand

Nemanja Vidic admits to feeling some sadness as he looks back on his Manchester United career but he is determined to finish it with a flourish.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/AD3FA449813F4798B2DD9B80A149789A.ashx?w=480&h=179&rgn=0,25,1280,502

The Reds captain is leaving the club at the end of the season after eight years and revealed he has already been reflecting on a spell that has produced many glorious highs and only the occasional low.

It’s a strange situation for the Serbian, who will leave Manchester to join Internazionale in Milan, but he’s focused on the task in hand – not least the remainder of this important month.

"At the end of the season, a really important part of my life and career will be over, and that’s sad," Vidic told MUTV. "I’ve been starting to think about the times I’ve spent here, the good and bad moments. I’ve been a part of so much success and worked with so many great people who’ve helped me to develop as a footballer.

"But that’s the way it is, that’s life and you have to move on. I’m looking forward to a new challenge but there is still lots for me to do here. We have important games in front of us and I would like to be a part of them to do as much as I can to help the club get through this difficult time.

"Most importantly, we must win our home games, which isn’t going to be easy. We’ve had some bad results at Old Trafford, so we have to assess the problem and change things."

I'll miss Vida when he leaves us:(. United legend IMO!

RvP injury not serious

Hat-trick hero Robin van Persie was stretchered off in the closing stages of Manchester United’s 3-0 victory against Olympiacos but manager David Moyes is confident the injury isn't serious.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/0400E687D7644977BFD788335A3CCF19.ashx?w=240&h=179&rgn=0,215,1800,1559

Van Persie looked in severe pain when he went down in the 90th minute under a challenge from Kostas Manolas. He was stretchered off the pitch and went straight down the tunnel.

However, speaking to reporters in the post-match press conference, Moyes appeared confident the Dutchman would soon be back on the pitch.

"I don't think Robin's too bad," he said. "He's got a knock just behind his knee. We'll know more in the morning – we'll assess it – but he had a knock in the back of his knee. We hope it's not too bad."

Van Persie's hat-trick was his third since joining the club and the first by a United player in Europe since Michael Owen netted a treble against Wolfsburg in December 2009.

'World-class' De Gea praised

Robin van Persie's goals may have grabbed the headlines in Wednesday's Champions League victory over Olympiacos, but Phil Jones believes the label of match-winner should go to David De Gea.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/AA5E874D776A4E5A8DFB313F3C9BE848.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,104,1440,914

Sandwiched between two of van Persie's three goals was an incredible double save from United's no.1. After blocking David Fuster's powerful header, De Gea recovered immediately and, at full-stretch, prevented Alejandro Dominguez's follow-up shot creeping inside the post.

Jones praised van Persie and De Gea after the 3-2 aggregate win that booked United's spot in the quarter-finals, but reserved special words for the man between the posts.

"He's world-class," Jones told ManUtd.com and BBC Radio. "He's up there with the best goalkeepers in the world. He can produce saves like that at critical moments in a match even when he's not really had much to do. He's alive to everything and won us the game."

De Gea was named Man of the Match by fans on United's official Twitter feed @ManUtd and was delighted with his performance and thankful for the support of the fans both at Old Trafford and beyond.

"The atmosphere inside the stadium was very impressive. It was a very important win for us that will boost our confidence," he told us. "I was very pleased with all the saves and happy I was able to help the team. I'd like to thank the fans for their support and for always being there. They are amazing."

Reds marvel at evergreen Giggs

Ryan Giggs received a glowing tribute from his Manchester United team-mates after producing an instrumental 90-minute display in the 3-0 win over Olympiacos on Wednesday night.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/76640CAE667B466FA87F96BF54CCCEDD.ashx?w=240&h=179&rgn=0,88,1280,1041

Almost a month after his last Reds outing and on his 150th Champions League appearance, Giggs had a hand in the first two goals at Old Trafford and was as fit as any other player on the pitch.

It led to manager David Moyes labelling him a "freak" after the game, while his team-mates were left shaking their heads in continued admiration.

"What's left to say about him?" said Michael Carrick. "It's incredible to come into a game like that, having not played a lot of football recently, and get through it physically – it shows how he looks after himself. His ball for Wayne [Rooney] for the second goal was typical of him. He can still do it and it's a pleasure to play with him."

Phil Jones added: "He's terrific. He drives the team forward and the ball for the penalty was exquisite. You can't teach that. He's a great lad as well."

And Patrice Evra said: "The legend, Ryan Giggs... I don't know how many words you can say about his class. I have so much respect for him. He's such an example to me. When I joined this club, a lot of people were talking about Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney but Ryan was always my favourite, along with Scholesy and Gary Neville."

Carrick was pleased with the comeback victory over Olympiacos, which came only three days after the disappointing league defeat at home to Liverpool.

"It's a good feeling," he said. "We knew it was possible before the game; we were quite positive and knew we were capable of a performance and a result like that, even after the weekend. We were very down for a couple of days after Liverpool but, at the same time, we knew we had enough to pull it off, so we're happy."

Giggsy is a legend, he was class last night.

Evra: We'll take on anyone

Manchester United don’t fear any potential Champions League quarter-final opponents, according to defender Patrice Evra.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/DADCB6A2E477454E91E8B3497572193D.ashx?w=480&h=179&rgn=0,89,1280,567

Although other big-hitting European clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich all remain in the draw, which will take place on Friday at 11:00 GMT, Evra says the Reds can be a match for anyone.

“It’s a tough competition but I think we showed Manchester United is still alive, even though we lost a few days ago against Liverpool,” he told MUTV.

“We have fought back. Now, let’s see. We’ll take any team. When we play with that spirit we can do something big."

Evra spoke passionately on Tuesday at UEFA’s pre-match press conference about the need to perform well against Olympiacos and do justice to the club’s proud traditions.

He invoked similar sentiments following the Reds’ 3-0 win on Wednesday and United’s progression to the competition’s last eight.

“It was really important to show the love for this shirt, the respect for this shirt,” he said.

“That’s why I think we won – the spirit. Maybe some people will say I’m too old-school but I know when you have the Manchester United spirit you can make a difference and nothing is impossible.

“When you lose against a rival like Liverpool 3-0 at home and the fans still sing for you – they never booed – it’s amazing.

"When I went home on Sunday I was so sad, so hurt inside. I couldn’t wait for the [Olympiacos] game to give something back.

“We’ve had a tough season and the supporters have been fantastic. I say thank you to all the Manchester United fans. For me, they are the best in the world.”

Robin van Persie netted all three of United's goals in Wednesday's win but Evra insists the team – not just the Dutchman – deserve the accolades.

"I remember that night when we won the league last season, against Aston Villa, Robin scored a hat-trick then as well. Big players step up on big nights. But the star tonight was the team – not just one player."

I love Paddy's interviews!

Jones: Reds must kick on

Phil Jones says Manchester United must use Wednesday’s impressive win over Olympiacos as a springboard for a successful end to the season.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/D7E50FC3D20C448A9C29217720121D5D.ashx?w=480&h=179&rgn=0,35,1764,693

The Reds went into the Champions League last 16 second leg knowing at least two goals were needed to be in with a chance of qualifying for the last eight. United went one better thanks to Robin van Persie’s hat-trick, which, coupled with a clean sheet, ensured progression to the next round.

Attention now turns back to the Barclays Premier League with a trip to West Ham on Saturday and a derby clash with Manchester City three days later at Old Trafford. And Jones insists it’s vital the Reds carry the good form shown against the Greeks into the next two games in particular.

“We have to use this as a springboard to bounce on,” he told ManUtd.com and BBC Radio. “We can’t drag our heels [in the league] and think about the next round [in the Champions League]. We have to prepare right for the next game, against West Ham, and go and get a result.

“It was a terrific night [against Olympiacos] and nice to be on the winning side. We were long overdue a performance like that and we pulled it out of the bag when it was needed.”

Asked whether or not the team would prioritise the Champions League given the sizeable gap between United and the top four in the league, Jones added: “I think we have to but we also have to prove ourselves and show what we’re capable of in the league as well. They’re all big games and we have to go to West Ham and win. That’s our focus now.”

De Gea keen to repay fans

David De Gea admits Manchester United were unfortunate to be paired with holders Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals but says he and his team-mates are determined to repay United fans for their continued support.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/821055C95C064C7FB3375EFFD0A2D547.ashx?w=480&h=179&rgn=0,209,1787,873

Bayern Munich are the bookies’ favourites to win the tournament again this year and secured their place in the last eight with a 3-1 aggregate win over Arsenal. Domestically, they are currently on a 50-game unbeaten run, well clear at the top of the Bundesliga and are still on course to repeat last season’s Treble heroics.

De Gea, who won the fan-voted Man of the Match award for his performance in United’s second-leg victory against Olympiacos on Wednesday, says beating Bayern will be a tough task but not one that’s beyond the Reds.

“You’ve got to be honest and say we haven’t been too fortunate in the draw,” he told ManUtd.com. “I suppose everyone would agree that they are probably the strongest outfit left in the tournament.

“But we knew that was always going to be possible. You’re always going to get a tough team at this stage of the competition, but the main thing is that we go into these games with confidence.

“We face them here and away from home with confidence. We’ll fight really, really hard and really go for it. That’s what we’ve got to do. One team’s got to win.”

United’s fans played a big part in helping the Reds overturn a 2-0 deficit in the last 16, according to De Gea, and the Spanish stopper is keen to repay the supporters’ faith when Bayern come to town.

“The fans were great the other night against Olympiacos,” he said. “We always know that on big Champions League nights they are with us and that strength we drew from their support and that push they gave us was very, very important.

“We know it will be the same against Bayern Munich – they will be there for us. That support that we get is vital.

“When the stadium is full and you hear the crowd singing your name it’s a lovely feeling and it’s something you’re really grateful for and thankful for. We’ll be really pleased if we can repay that support. That would be great.”

Boss excited by Bayern tie

Manchester United manager David Moyes is looking forward to the Champions League quarter-final ties against Bayern Munich.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/F3A98E76682F4894856EDEDE417409D8.ashx?w=480&h=179&rgn=0,143,1600,739

Although he conceded that the draw is a tough one, the Reds boss is relishing being in the last eight of Europe's premier competition after the remarkable win against Olympiacos in midweek.

"I was thrilled that we were in that draw and we're in the quarter-finals of the Champions League," Moyes stated at Friday's press conference ahead of the weekend trip to West Ham.

"When we were 2-0 down to Olympiacos a week or so ago, I don't think a lot of people were putting us through to the quarter-final draw. So, in a lot of ways, it didn't matter who I drew.

"But I've got to say we've drawn out the favourites and obviously the holders of the cup competition as well, so it's a really tough draw for us but one that I'm looking forward to."

The manager was asked about his thoughts on having the home leg against Bayern first on 1 April.

"I think if you're old fashioned, you'd say you always want to be at home in the second leg," he explained. "I've got to say that would be the preference. But the way the game's going now with counter-attacking football and a different approach by teams away from home, we've got it and that's the way the draw came out. We're at home in the first leg and away in the second leg, we just have to take it."

Moyes also had a message for those who queried his limited experience of top-level European football when he took on the job of replacing Sir Alex Ferguson.

Nearly everyone asked me at the start of the season about my inexperience in the Champions League," he recalled. "I was amazed that none of you asked me about that the other night there, it must have slipped your minds.

"Look, I said before, I'd watched enough Champions League football and hopefully watched so much that I know a bit about it. But I got a lot of help from people around me, I said I would do that. Thankfully, I've got myself to the quarter-final but the aim now is to get to the semi-final."

Van Persie ruled out

Manchester United manager David Moyes has ruled Robin van Persie out of Saturday's Barclays Premier League encounter with West Ham at Upton Park.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/0400E687D7644977BFD788335A3CCF19.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,461,1800,1475

Van Persie suffered a knee injury in the 90th minute of Wednesday's 3-0 win over Olympiacos at Old Trafford, forcing him to leave the field on a stretcher and without the match ball that his preceding hat-trick had earned.

Although the boss has already described the blow as "not serious", he will not risk taking the Dutchman to East London for a difficult game against Sam Allardyce's Hammers.

"We're getting Robin re-scanned again today," Moyes told reporters at the Aon Training Complex on Friday. "We're not quite conclusive on everything we've seen yet so we want to just check that out and be sure. He won't be available for tomorrow's game, but we'll try to give you some update when we can on the outcome of it.

"We've got a lot of games coming up, we need to make sure that the squad's ready for all the games. That's big for us, that we have all our players fit and available.

"I think Big Sam has just won Manager of the Month. I don't know if that was his curse last week [losing 3-1 to Stoke City] or if it's still to come this week. But he's done great. They were at a lower league position and he's turned them around."

Gutted about RVP:(, hope he is OK and has a speedy recovery.

It is a blow for United, but a positive is that Juan Mata will finally get a chance to play in his favoured CAM role and I'm looking forward to seeing him link up with Wayne Rooney more.

Possibly more game time for Kagawa/Hernandez too? Welbeck will obviously get games also as he is ahead in the pecking order than those two.

Happy with that win, solid team performance by the lads. Shinji Kagawa and Juan Mata's link up and interchanging was class, they both seem to enjoy playing with Wayne Rooney too and all three have hard work, creativity and intelligence on the pitch!

WOW Wazza's first goal, the technique and quality was sublime to even attempt it from there and he had to be quick in terms of looking to see where the GK was. I would say it is better than David Beckham's was, it was fitting that Becks was there today to see that goal.

Special mentions to Carrick and Fellaini too. I must admit I was worried when I saw that Michael Carrick was going to play at CB, but he was very solid and in MF Fellaini was getting stuck in with the challenges, interceptions and tried to create chances and tracked back also.

The last two results have given the team and Manager more confidence and morale, but we do have City next now...

Rooney revels in victory

Wayne Rooney described last weekend's 3-0 defeat to Liverpool as one of the worst days in his professional career, but he scored twice against West Ham – his first a stunning 60-yard strike – to ensure the Reds got back to winning ways in the league at Upton Park.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/DE3015EA6521464396E247D91575031F.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,141,2644,1621

Rooney, who joked that his first goal was even better than David Beckham’s halfway line hit in 1996 against Wimbledon. Beckham was in the crowd at Upton Park to witness Rooney’s strike as the Reds recorded a third consecutive away league win.

“Today was a good result after last week [against Liverpool],” said Rooney. “I think the win on Wednesday against Olympiacos has given us all a big lift and you could see today the confidence running through the team. It was a good victory and I'm really pleased with that.

“I think the Olympiacos result was massive for us in terms of picking the fans up, picking ourselves up after the defeat to Liverpool. Today we played some lovely football, although I'm a bit disappointed that we didn't take one or two other chances to make the game easier for ourselves.

“Overall we played some good stuff. I thought we defended really well. I thought Michael Carrick at the back, in a difficult game, was outstanding for us so there are a lot of positives for us.

“We played great as a team and I thought there was some great counter-attacking football from us. That's in the DNA of Manchester United and today we did that, particularly in the first half. We caused them a lot of problems and could have scored more.”

Of his goal, Rooney said: “It was just instinct. I've turned and I've had a quick look and seen the goalkeeper off his line. It's one of those that I've tried many times and thankfully today it's gone in and I was delighted with that.”

Asked if it was better than Beckham’s strike, he joked: “Of course it was! It's up there [with my best goals]. I wouldn't say it's my favourite. The goals we mentioned before [against Newcastle and City] are goals that you try in training and games and it's not often they come off and when they do it's great.”

Next up for the Reds on Tuesday is Manchester City’s visit to Old Trafford. But after two wins on the trot United go into the game with confidence. “It's a massive game,” Rooney told Sky Sports. “It’s a big game for City too, for the fans and for the players. It's a big challenge for us and we have to go into that with confidence after the last two games. I'm looking forward to it, I'm excited, and hopefully we can get a good result.”

Reds' dominance delights Moyes

David Moyes was pleased with a third consecutive away win in the Barclays Premier League after Wayne Rooney inspired a 2-0 victory over West Ham at Upton park.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/8DD65B5AB0BE4814BADCD017830FAE73.ashx?w=240&h=359&rgn=1366,0,2547,1763

United produced yet another commanding and confident display on the road to see off Sam Allardyce's Hammers side. However, Moyes did feel that a bigger winning margin would have been more reflective of the Reds’ dominance over the course of the 90 minutes.

Reflecting on the overall result, Moyes said: "I thought we played very well. The disappointing thing is that we didn't take more of the chances we created in the first half. I think Shinji [Kagawa] had a chance, Juan [Mata] had a chance and [Marouane] Fellaini could probably have scored with a header early on. I was a little bit worried when we missed those opportunities as to how it was going to be, but we thoroughly deserved the win."

Injuries and suspension forced the manager into several alterations to his team that earned a morale-boosting win over Olympiacos in midweek, but the performance of Michael Carrick in central defence also pleased the boss.

"Being an old centre-half myself, I thought he made the job look easy," he added. "I felt like saying to him that it's easy playing centre-half and he was terrific. West Ham had opportunities because they are a handful, but between him [Carrick] and Fellaini I thought they dealt manfully with Andy Carroll."

Moyes is now hoping that this win, coupled with the confidence from the victory over Olympiacos, can help spur his side on to the challenge posed by Manchester City's visit to Old Trafford on Tuesday. "You can never refer this game to the next one but all we want to do is get a bit of momentum and that's something we haven't had an awful lot of," he said. "Hopefully we can go into Tuesday's game showing a bit more confidence. The midweek game helped and today's performance will help as well."

Welbz needs to play Vs City. Tell him to just stay near Demichelis and when Mata has the ball, run in behind him. He will get him sent off soon enough. His running could cause him and even Kompany(who doesn't enjoy those sort of attackers sometimes) some problems.

puskas was 99% for career and scored in 99% of games for hungary (84 goals in 85 games)
gerd muller was 94% over his career and 105% for germany

Louis Van Gaal
Frank De Boer
Jurgen Klopp
Carlo Ancelotti (depends on how Real's season pans out)
Diego Simeone

Anyone who isn't tactically inept basically.

Quotes from Nani's agent...

"Nani is a very important player and at this time the only thing I can say is that he is likely to leave Manchester," Pastorello said.

"The problem for Fiorentina and the other Italian clubs is the player's salary.

"Surely we will evaluate all bids. Our relationship with United is great.

"Fiorentina have to speak with Manchester United about Anderson and maybe it will be an opportunity to talk about Nani too.

Following the departure of David Moyes as manager, Manchester United has announced that Ryan Giggs, the club’s most decorated player, will assume responsibility for the first team until a permanent appointment can be made.

The club will make no further comment on this process until Ryan Giggs has finished smashing every bird in Manchester, including Lauren Moyes, whilst celebrating the fact David has departed.

Ancelotti is a possibility, tbh. Which is why I sincerely hope the board don't rush things.

Journalists on Twitter saying it's between him and Van Gaal.

Sir Alex Ferguson will be asked to take a prominent role in deciding Manchester United's next manager despite an acknowledgement within the club that he was responsible for choosing the wrong man last time.

Oh ffs. Article, luckily, then goes onto say deliberating between Ancelotti and Van Gaal. Thankfully. Final say will be Woodward's, supported by The Glazers.

Edit: Papers saying Ancelotti is top of the list.

So David Moyes gone then. Right call for me, but I think the club acted awful in the way they went about it. Somebody leaking it to the press before he was actually told by the board etc, that is disgraceful.

DM is a nice guy and I do wish him well for the future. United players need to take their fair share of the blame too for our awful season and we need a big clear out and revamp in the Summer.

So Giggsy interim Manager till end of the season with Scholesy and Butt back to help with the coaching.

I wonder who our next permanent Manager will be? Looking likely to be Louis Van Gaal.

David Moyes' statement just was dignified and full of class, but I wouldn't blame him for being angry in the way his departure was handled...

It's a shame it didn't work out for him, but this parting is best for both parties.

The players, however need a big kick up the backside and need to realise it is just as much their fault why we are in this mess.
