The episode was kind of meh for me tbh. I felt like way too much was happening and it was hard for me to follow the story. I don't really mind that much when the beginning of the episode is confusing but that period of confusion lasted way to long for me I only really got what was going on at the "are we dreaming are we not dreaming" part. I'll probably like the episode more tho after I watch it again.
The dream monsters were great!
I do wish the episode was on later so they could make it a bit more twisted and creepy.

The next companion should be that shape shifting girl from s8

I'm so glad they kept Clara. The old version of her looked ridiculous though

I really hope Shonda (The young girl) is the new companion. I hope that she's in the Tardis at the same time as Clara for more than just a few eps. I don't think the NuWho has had that dynamic yet.

I'm also glad Clara is staying. I didn't like her during her run with Matt smith but ever since capable I took over she's been amazing they have great on screen chemistry Tennant and rose but without the awful love story added in.

Also near the end of the Christmas episode old Clara hinted there was another man that could of lived up to Danny (I was left to assume it was the doctor she was talking about) I really hope the writers keep their relationship platonic and don't turn this into another romance.

Apparently the Sisterhood of Karn (the Timelords who helped the 8th Doctor regenerate in that Night of the Doctor minisode) could be returning, maybe we will see John Simm's Master regenerating into Michelle Gomez's Master.

So, Series 9 opens with a two-parter and Missy is back? Autumn, hurry the **** up! I need this now! This is our first two-part opener, isn't it?

I also love the titles for the first two episodes.

We had a two part opener in 2011 with The Impossible Astronaut and Day of the Moon - the episodes with 11, Amy, Rory and River Song in America fighting against The Silence.

Filming began on the 9th series of Doctor Who - its 35th run overall - on January 5, 2015 for a planned transmission in the autumn. Steven Moffat will serve as lead writer and executive producer for the fifth time.

Peter Capaldi will return for his second full series as the Doctor, while Jenna Coleman will be back for her third run of episodes as Clara Oswald.

Coleman was widely expected to be leaving the series in the 2014 Christmas special - and indeed had planned to exit - but later changed gears and signed a new contract.

Clara is confirmed to be appearing in the entirety of series 9: "She continues to complicate..." Moffat has said. "...and that relationship between the two of them is incredibly strong."

Details have so far emerged about 8 episodes, divided into 4 two-parters - though Moffat has noted that some of these dual episodes are "just linked" rather than adopting the traditional two-part format.

"It's not just two-parters - it's occasionally taking one strand and keeping it going," he explained. "There's two-parters where the episodes are quite different, two-parters that are quite traditional - just to change the rhythm of it."

Episodes 1 & 2 - 'The Magician's Apprentice' / 'The Witch's Familiar'
Written by Steven Moffat
Directed by Hettie McDonald

The opening two-parter of the series, though shot as part of the second production block.

'The Magician's Apprentice' / 'The Witch's Familiar' marks the return of 'Blink' director McDonald to Doctor Who - and will also bring back Michelle Gomez as Missy, not long after she was apparently vapourised by the Cyber-Brigadier in series 8 finale 'Death in Heaven'.

"I was thinking about the story of the first two-parter and she fits in there perfectly - she just fits," Moffat explained.

Jemma Redgrave - who first appeared as the Brigadier's daughter Kate Stewart in 2012 episode 'The Power of Three' - will also be back.

Episodes 3 & 4
Written by Toby Whithouse
Directed by Daniel O'Hara

Doctor Who series 9 begins filming in Cardiff

The first two episodes shot this year, this as-yet-untitled adventure marks the return of Being Human creator Whithouse to Doctor Who scripting duties - his first episode since 2012's 'A Town Called Mercy'.

He reteams with Being Human and The Game director O'Hara for what Moffat has described as "a brilliantly creepy two-parter" and "one of our scariest adventures yet".

Game of Thrones actor Paul Kaye will play a guest part, while additional cast includes The Missing's Arsher Ali, Morven Christie, Colin McFarlane, Sophie Stone, Zaqi Ismail, Steven Robertson and Neil Fingleton.

Episodes 5 & 6 - 'The Girl Who Died' / 'The Woman Who Lived'
Written by Jamie Mathieson & Steven Moffat, Catherine Tregenna
Directed by Ed Bazalgette

The first example of a non-traditional two-parter - these two linked instalments are penned by different writers, with Moffat and 'Flatline' scribe Mathieson working together on episode 5, and episode 6 penned solo by Torchwood's Tregenna.

In addition to introducing a new armoured monster to Doctor Who's rogues gallery, 'The Girl Who Died' / 'The Woman Who Lived' will also feature Maisie Williams as a character who "put[s] the Doctor to the test" and Rufus Hound, playing one Sam Swift.

These two episodes were shot together in one production block, but since they might only be loosely connected, it's unclear which cast members will appear in episode 5 and which will appear in 6 - or indeed, if the entire cast will appear in both.

Also confirmed to appear are Siblings actor Tom Stourton, Ariyon Bakare, Simon Lipkin, Ian Conningham, Murray McArthur, Barnaby Kay, John Voce and Struan Rodger.

Episodes 7 & 8
Written by Peter Harness
Directed by Daniel Nettheim

'Kill The Moon' writer Harness is back to tackle a two-parter and promises to deliver the "biggest cliffhanger" you can imagine, with the help of Glue and Line of Duty director Nettheim.

The Thick of It star Rebecca Front will reunite with her old co-star Capaldi, though her role in this story remains "a closely-guarded secret" - for now.

Ingrid Oliver will be back as beloved UNIT scientist Osgood - though in what form is unclear, given the character's apparent demise in 'Death In Heaven' - alongside Jemma Redgrave as Kate Stewart once again.

Also back for another go-around are the Zygons, first introduced to Doctor Who in 1975 and making their third appearance on the show after an encore in the 50th anniversary special.

Episode 10
Written by Sarah Dollard
Directed by Justin Molotnikov

Nothing confirmed on episode 9 yet, but the following week's adventure will be penned by Sarah Dollard - of Being Human and The Game - and directed by Merlin's Justin Molotnikov.

Story details are scarce, though it's been announced that Joivan Wade will be back for an encore as Rigsy - the good-natured graffiti artist who teamed with the Doctor and Clara in series eight's 'Flatline'.

Episodes 11 & 12
Written by Steven Moffat
Directed by Rachel Talalay

A year on from helming 2014's two-part series ender - 'Dark Water' and 'Death in Heaven' - Tank Girl director Talalay returns for series 9's finale.

As is tradition, Moffat takes up the reigns again on the script front to bring this run of Doctor Who to a close.

Bonus facts:
This series of Doctor Who - like last year's - will span 12 episodes, though it's unclear if we'll also be getting a bumper-length premiere, akin to 'Deep Breath'.

This leaves one instalment - episode 9 - as yet unaccounted for. Mark Gatiss was previously confirmed to be writing for series 9, so it's a safe bet that his "very frightening" script will fill this slot.

[River Song will] now be story-driven. If we’ve got an idea that she fits perfectly then there’s no reason why we can’t do it, but I quite liked where we got to at the end of ‘The Name of the Doctor’, with him saying goodbye to her. So we’ll see.”

I've not really seen any classic episodes in full, but I've seen loads of clips over the years.

Actually, the first I remember seeing was Snakedance (with Martin Clunes) back when the classic episodes used to come on TV on TV Gold or whatever on Saturday mornings (before the 2005 revival I think).

I was only young and this scene scared the **** out of me (around 50 seconds onwards):

New Doctor Who News was revealed today
(Gonna put it in spoiler tags BC some people might not want to see it)

Episode 9...
is going to be a found footage type episode. 'Doctor who meets clover field'

Episode 11...
Is apparently an episode to only star the doctor, no other cast memebers at the moment. just 45 minutes of Peter Capaldi. This is part one of the finale, and there could be a very big cliffhanger (as Steven Moffat hinted at earlier this year)

And Finally...
The zygon episodes have the titles 'Invasion Of The Zygons/Inversion Of The Zygons'

I really like this new tidbits of info!

I feel like they have been toying around with the idea of episode 11 for a while, and it could well fit into the whole Pompeii thing because Steven Moffat said he could be using one of Russell T Davies in the series, and episode 11s idea could've been suggested for David, but he didn't want to? I'm not sure but it could be what happened

and same, episode 9 sounds really good

I think it will honestly be alright, but I think this episode will be scripted, and if they wanted it to be like found footage, they should've given the actors some freedom with the lines to make it as realistic and I think doing, and making the actors improvise, that would make the show go to a new boundary.... However it might have just been Peter Capaldi swearing like he did on the thick of it so you know

Marsh.
19-08-2015, 04:31 PM
I don't think it was meant for David.

The RTD idea was about how The Doctor could have the same face as the man from Pompeii (Peter Capaldi). RTD had an idea for how that could've occurred because Peter Capaldi also played a different character in Torchwood.

Here are some rumours about the new series...

-Davros will return in the series opening two-parter but as a child.
- Maisie Williams could be playing a younger version of Clara or a regenerated version of The Doctor's Daughter from Series 4.
- Episode 11 will see The Doctor discover the reason behind his face reappearing.
- Jenna Coleman may leave the show at the end of Series 9
- The Fires of Pompeii may be revisited, with David Tennant and RTD reportedly making short return stints. Both were spotted visiting the Doctor Who set in Cardiff.
- One site has also rumoured the presence of Paul McGann at the filming of Series 9 and a "degeneration"-scene has been rumoured, which is a flashback back to previous Doctors

A few more things I just found on doctor who TVs new article about Steven Moffat:

5 teaser words – “Cards”, “Hybrid”, “Cobbles”, “Solo”, “Dead” (mostly in order, one will make you laugh, the other cry)
Reason for more multi-part stories is about recapturing mystery and atmosphere – more creeping menace and character moments
Missy had the “Least convincing death in history”. But her quick return wasn’t originally planned for the opener, she just fit the theme – “friends within enemies”.
Concept for episodes 3 & 4 was “ghosts plus time travel” – what if you could meet your own ghost?
Guest star Sophie Stone’s character will only speak through sign language in 3 & 4
Maisie Williams plays a very important character in 5 & 6… Is she “The Girl Who Died”? “Maybe, but it won’t be as simple as that”
“The Women Who Lived” is “heartfelt, eloquent and clever”. Both 5 & 6 are obviously connected
Moffat had the idea for the Zygon two-parter before the 50th. The Zygon plot strand in that was a prequel to this year
Moffat has in fact co-written episode 8 with Peter Harness
Zygons are living among us, what do we do about it? Could it be these monsters aren’t monsters at all and are just like us?
Episode 9 is a tough one to pull off and very different to Gatiss’ other scripts, still unmistakably in his in style and tone but nothing like Robot of Sherwood
With Episode 10, Moffat thought “why haven’t we done thatbefore?”
In 10 “every scene ends on a cliffhanger, Clara’s funny and the Doctor is outrageous”
Episode 10 was pushed up to lead us into the final two episodes
Episode 11 is one of the strangest Doctor Who episodes ever made – “It’s as ‘out-there’ as we can get” and was a “shockingly hard script to write”
Episode 12 is “more in the finale tradition. It’s all about… well, you’ll see”

Was he created as an adult? I haven't seen Genesis of the Daleks but from the summaries I've read etc I've never come across that (or that he was first created in that episode). Also, on the Doctor Who wiki, some of the companion stories give him a childhood backstory (their canonicity is usually debateable but I'm sure they usually try to stay consistent with the show as much as they can).

But like I say, I haven't actually seen the episode in question so I really don't know.

the audio adventures are where they explored Davros's past I think. I don't know how canon they're considered to be though. Certainly the only time we've ever seen or known of Davros in the TV series have been after his transformation into whatever he is today. RTD said they were originally going to have a scene in the series 4 finale which showed Davros in some sort of science experiment that went wrong when he was a young man but it had to be cut for time

Is this how Clara becomes Oswin?

Pete.

I enjoyed it although I couldn't help drawning some comparison from RTD stories as in frozen planes = planets in the sky, Clara's faux death = Rose's faux death.

There was a dalek episode last year then the last full blown Dalek episode was 2012.

Since Steven Moffat has taken over, Dalek stories are few and far between. Hardly overused

It was abandoned. Acid rain and stuff. Skaro was supposed to have been destroyed in the Time War. The Skaro in this episode looks like pre time war

I thought it was okay, I think it would have worked better as an extended episode rather than a two parter though since the story isn't interesting enough to carry two episodes.

yea I agree they could've just chucked 20 minutes onto the end where all the issues are resolved, it didn't make me feel like I can't wait to find out what happens next cause predictable

Nah, honestly, I'm glad its a two parter, got tired of having all the plots magically wrapped up in the last 5 minutes of episodes. I thought tonight was a decent opener. Good to see they finally referenced the Shadow Proclimation again :joker:

Not surprising really, I'm getting a bit tired of Moffatt's episodes tbh. They reek of his vanity and Moffatt's too focused on being seen as clever rather than giving us an entertaining episode.

Time for someone else to take over, he has lost his touch.

This is 100% true, David Tenants were simple but entertaining and appealed to kids.

I was obsessed with DW when I was like 7, but I don't know any young kids who like it.

It's a more grown up show now IMO.

Moffatt was better when he only wrote one story a series. His episodes in series 1-4 were the best episodes of Doctor Who but I think his style of writing doesn't work for whole seasons.

The problem is that he now values clever gimmicks over a good story. He needs to go back to what made his earlier episodes good.

Every review I've read bar one has said it's much better than the first part. Apparently a large part of the episode is just conversation between the Doctor and Davros which sounds amazing :amazed:

Can't wait.

Don't get why some people hated on last weeks episode, it was a pretty straightforward plot, no massive twists. Only people who would be confused is those who have no idea who Davros is.

Last week was an absolutely fantastic episode. Say what you like about Moffat but his writing for Davros was spot on.
Skaro being back was a great move that I'm surprised never happened sooner.
