A couple who became involved in riots in Hartlepool after going to an afternoon bingo session have each been jailed for two years and two months.

Steven Mailen, 54, of Arch Court, Hartlepool, was described as “one of the main instigators” of a large scale disturbance on Murray Street.

His partner Ryan Sheers, 29, of Powlett Road, Hartlepool, was bitten on the hip by a police dog during the incident.

The pair, neither of whom has any previous convictions, pleaded guilty to violent disorder after around 200 people gathered in the town on July 31.

Teesside Crown Court heard Mailen and Sheers had been at bingo together in the afternoon and continued drinking at home.

They told police they came upon the disturbance on the way to the shop to buy more alcohol and ended up being “at the very forefront of the mob”.
Rachel Masters, prosecuting, said officers at the scene described Mailen as “one of the main instigators of a large scale disturbance”

There's at least a third of people in prison who've never done anything violent whatsoever.

Where I understand those who would be due for parole likely sometime next year and getting them out this year instead in September/ October time

There are a few which due to the original smaller sentencing do come under the 40% benchmark of time served.
However there's still battling going on about that.
So it hasn't happened YET at all.
Plus the families of the victims are rightly furious.

That's my hope too.
I'm personally not happy with the 40% of time served bar as to release.
Although it's not released without other restrictions applied.

That will mean however a lenient sentence for a violent crime.
Then also a more longer sentence for a similar violent crime.

Would mean one could get out sooner depending on which Court and Judge decreed the sentencing.

To be fair Joey I actually slightly disagree that 20 months in this case is too much unless he seriously hurt someone, especially if it was a first offense. I know there are often TiBB disagreements about this but in my mind 18 is still very much a kid and susceptible to being influenced and caught up in something like this, if it was a "first time" I think the shock of getting any prison time at all is enough.

I'd feel differently if it was a young person with a long juvenile record for violence / antisocial behaviour, and I also feel differently when it's full-grown men who have absolutely no excuse for throwing their beer bellies around town smashing the place up, but no I wouldn't see the life of every teenager caught up in the riots destroyed by long prison sentences. Ultimately we do need to be careful about disproportionate responses.

In terms of who should or shouldn't be in actual prison I tend to agree that there should be a higher threshold for non-violent crime resulting in actual prison time vs other more creative sentences. I'm very much of the opinion that actual prison sentences should be about protecting the public from someone who is a risk, rather than a punishment. It's also, for example, why I think that paedophiles who have actively harmed children, and murderers who have killed "in cold blood" should literally never be allowed back into society.

It certainly won't be 20 months he serves.
Although I would have normally agreed with SB on this one as to sentencing and wish I could have.

However for me some crimes should mean the sentence given.
These rioters chose to go AND stay on them, even when it got extremely violent.
Plus against the Police too.
With uncertain outcomes.
So for me these criminals warrant the stiffest possible sentences.
20 months for me, likely at least halved.
Won't be even a year in prison.

Then who knows with this release after 40% served would mean out in 8 months.
For the damage, the fear, the danger people felt they were in.
Assaulting and disrespecting the Police trying to maintain any law and order.

To be sent to prison but much more than likely be home by Easter next year in around 8 months.
Sorry, doesn't sound much of a punishment to me.

It was the Cons who began the policy of letting prisoners out a bit earlier..
They were going to do the same thing almost exactly.

It's not a uniquely Labour thing.

How fake claims over Southport suspect spread like wildfire with false name seen more than 420,000 times…

Posts sharing the false identity of the Southport stabbing suspect were viewed at least 420,000 times on social media, the Independent can reveal.

England was hit by a series of race riots in towns and cities after wrong information was shared online following the killing of three children at a Taylor Swift themed dance party on 29 July. The suspect was eventually named as Axel Rudakubana, born in Cardiff to Rwandan parents, after a judge ruled the 17 year-old’s identity could be revealed.

But before that, thousands of posts appeared on multiple social media platforms spreading a false name and background of the killer: Ali Al-Shakati, an asylum seeker of Muslim faith who was claimed to have come to the UK by boat last year.

The fake name would go on to have an astounding potential reach of 1.7 billion people; that figure made up of the number of followers and/or page likes where the keyword appeared.

Social media data analysed by Hootsuite, the social media performance engine, shows that the false information was shared in at least 4,776 posts across X (Twitter), Facebook, YouTube, Quora, and Reddit.

The posts mentioning the false name were engaged with at least 91,150 times (likes, shares, quotes), and videos with the name were watched over 330,000 times, according to Hootsuite.

There were more than 2,632 posts mentioning Ali Al-Shakati on the day of the stabbing alone. The false identity has been shared in posts by some 3,000 accounts across social media platforms since.

Many posts shared the false information with nearly identical wording, and a particular focus on the asylum seeker claim, which was entirely untrue and fermented anti-immigrant sentiment that boiled over into rioting.

This data shows how the misinformation spread like wildfire in a matter of hours, picked up by thousands of individual users and shared among communities.

The false suspect’s identity was closely linked to calls to violence on social media, with incendiary and misleading information suggesting “basically this was a terrorist attack. Despite what the BBC may say. Another Islamic scumbag”.

The first person to share the false name and background of the subject has been identified as a British woman on social media, who claims she received the information from someone in Southport.

An account associated with an obscure news website Channel3Now published the information in a widely-shared article (since taken down), which also falsely said that the suspect was known to MI6.

A number of high-profile accounts jumped on the bandwagon, including Laurence Fox, whose tweet with the false name remains up on his page, including misleading allusions to the suspect’s religion.

Rioters targeting Muslim and Asian communities

The nationwide riots were largely tied to false rumours that the suspect was Muslim, culminating in multiple instances of Islamophobia-linked violence such as attacks on mosques.

Chants of “Allah, Allah, who the ******* is Allah” were heard outside of Merseyside mosque on July 30, and an Asian taxi driver in Hull was racially abused and dragged out of his vehicle.

This has put Islamophobia squarely at the forefront of the national conversation.

The Hootsuite data shows that posts mentioning the keyword Muslim have ballooned since the stabbing, and reached their peak at the worst of the riots on Sunday, 4 August.

There were more than 202,000 posts mentioning the word Muslim in the period between the date of the stabbing and 8 August, 10 days later. This is a 242% increase when compared to the 59,430 posts in the previous 10 days.

Over August 4 and 5, at the peak of the riots’ violence, there were over 60,000 posts mentioning the word Muslim.

Social media engagement for these posts reached 11.6 million since July 29.

Immigration on the front line

Another factor that contributed to the riots was the false information around the suspect being a migrant, specifically an asylum seeker. In fact, the real suspect was born in Cardiff.

Far-right groups have largely rallied around this anti-immigration sentiment, with violent and targeted attacks at a Rotherham hotel where asylum seekers were trapped inside and “glad to be alive”.

The keywords immigrant, migration, migrant and asylum seeker have been mentioned in over 154,000 posts since the stabbing and subsequent riots began, according to Hootsuite’s data.

In particular, posts mentioning the term asylum seeker shot up by 303% compared to the previous 10-day period, with 47,184 posts across platforms.

These posts mentioning asylum seekers have seen a substantial boost in engagement of 423%, with over 2 million (2,670,239) likes, shares, comments, and more.

People further spreading misinformation deliberately to create more unrest is a form of cyber-terrorism. There will be some indication that he knew the information was false but repeated it anyway to promote violence... probably seized his equipment and found messages to others, etc.

A bit ironic that this is about migrants flooding into towns, ruining them, using up all the resources, etc... only for the "protesters" to flood into towns, ruining them, using up all the resources (emergency services particularly), etc.

But more on topic, I feel like rioter/looter mentality needs to be studied like we study any other criminal/culty behavior. It would be real interesting to know what kind of people these actually are. How these things are arranged. In the "normal" world, I'd like to know if I'm having a potential conversation with anyone regarding anything political, who or what element I'm actually dealing with. I can tell when someone is into "cult think", but harder to tell the kind of non-serious person who burns down buildings. And are these even people we run into on a regular basis whether it is offline and online? I'd like to know for myself, if who I am talking to, is this kind of special.

I don't think of TiBB as an oddball place (that kind, anyway). It's part of the "normal" world, just containing the more eccentric bits of active society. But I would like to know if any of you are knife-wielding axe murders in your spare time. /humor

Don't expect much rationality from rioters. You may as well ask how does destroying a high street help to stop the police from killing criminals.
