I do wonder if it would be better to leave the statues where they are, just ensure they're accompanied by the full history of the person depicted, including the controversies. You can't erase history unfortunately - but you can ensure that it's recorded accurately and without sentimentality or bias. Churchill was instrumental in defeating the Nazis. He was also a white supremacist and guilty of earlier war crimes. Those are the facts. I feel like one side doesn't like the former and one doesn't like the latter... But they're just historical facts.
I get why people are angry about the statues as they stand though. They very rarely include the bad, and paint people with some dark history as paragons.
