I love a "real" fire and grew up with a coal fire - my sister still has an open fire - BUT I hate to be the bearer of bad news Alf, they made buring "proper" coal illegal a few years back. You have to use smokeless coal, dry logs or other alternatives (all of them are significantly more expensive than proppa old fashioned coal).
Obviously no one is going to know if you're burning normal coal - but good luck buying it in the first place.
