I have been part of the gay/ trans scene literally all my life... From the 80's until now. From being a young child I was around trans people. I was raised in a gay working girl household.

Hatred of trans is, right now, at an all-time low. It might be amplified due to social media, but it really isn't what it used to be. It has mainstream acceptance.

There is zero comparison between being in that scene back then and now... watch 'The Naked Civil Servant' for a primer.
