That's because they're generally quite ignorant and oblivious to the fact that it's possible to find another male attractive, whilst still remaining heterosexual. Fact of the matter is, though, is that most, if not all, know this, yet would never admit it for fear of rejection and abuse from their peers, because they've been sucked into this imaginary, non-existant world in which being gay is 'wrong'.

Girls, on the other hand, will naturally compliment each others looks, and I'd imagine it's in the hope of receiving a compliment themselves, whilst making each other all feel a lot better about their appearence.
