As an ex duty manager ... it is the customers responsibility is to pay the store price for an item and once handed to staff, its then the stores responsibility to make sure it goes into the till. If money is lost by a cashier its not the customers problem, and what ever is there should still be put in the till with no more coming from the customer. Its then up to the cashier to either find the lost money or replace it, or leave it but having store procedures taken against them- even for the till being down by the smallest amount.

So yes it is unfair, even though its only a quid
