That's awful! Why did you let it do that? Couldn't you have taken the babies away or something? Then again perhaps they wouldn't have survived.

Yeah. Our rabbit did the same, our fault for picking them up I think. She could smell us on them.

They were too young to take away from her ,otherwise I would have done that,I'de go out and things were fine and then I'de go out to them again and they were gone,it was heartbreaking, but that's nature I guess. One of the babies did survive a couple of days we got excited and called it Dancer as it used to wobble on it's legs, then she did the same .

... ... Rabbits need to have zero human contact of any kind after birthing. Even going to look at them can stress out the mother and then she'll either kill them herself as a survival tactic or she'll stop producing milk and the poor buggers will starve. Either way, they eat them to stop the smell from attracting predators.

MALE rabbits will kill the babies for giggles, and need to be kept away at all costs. Nasty!

I heard somewhere they did this , don't guinea pigs and hamsters do this too if the scent of human is on the babies?

I was told that too Kizzy,so we kept well away from her,but had to go into the hutch to feed her etc,we didn't pick the babies up or anything ,but it was hard not to look at them and not go AwNow we only have ONE rabbit and a couple of guinea pigs, the guineas are kept separately,I might add.

This was a a few years ago armand she is dead now,she was a rescue rabbit and was preggers when we got her,she did have another litter while with us as we had a male that 'accidently' escaped and had his wicked way, lol,we didn't mind as we could have housed them, but she killed them all again,so we were very careful not to let her get preggers again and she never, she was lovely but not mother material.

My cat was neutered, couldn't imagine her having kittens at all, the vet said she was a "very aggressive, dominant female", she's a sweet little thing but she can be really vicious (she lost one of her eyes in a fight with a ginger tom...), just couldn't imagine her having kittens. Maybe she's aggressive because she was neutered? I don't know.
