Firstly TV itself doesn't compare, not as many people watch TV now than they did then in general and so comparing viewing shares/percentages would make more sense.
Secondly Love Island is not on a main channel, it's on ITV2 and so it's not as widely promoted by being on one of the main channels and its not as accessible.
Love Island is the next craze for the younger demographic after Big Brother [BB ended at BB8/BB9]
