You don't really get given the option... there are only a few circumstances under which you can refuse jury service, and work isn't one of them, sadly.

That said, chances are that you either won't "get picked" anyway, or it'll be some piddly little case that'll only be one day in court. "Big cases" are pretty rare.

My best friend has just completed a jury service - she got a pretty awful trial (child abuse) which lasted a few days and wasn't called upon on the other days so she was excused around lunch time each day.

My grandmother was called once and it turned out the trial was for her next door neighbours son, who she used to babysit She got out of it.

They cannot sack you for jury service as it is a legal requirement.

i'm not sure if its the same at all authorities, but i think they have moved to a system where you can get called to cases over a period of a week or something. So you have to attend each day, and you may or may not be assigned to a trial

People I know who have done it have only done about 4 days before being discharged. The longer than two week cases aren't as common as you think.

I love watching criminal court cases on TV shows. But being in a real court will be different. Exciting, but scary.
