Anderson was our best player today. Rather harsh.

Did Tom Cleverley's excellent five yard passing display escape your vision? Maybe it was that sumptuous 20 yard or so pass back to Lindegaard that had you scream with joy.

Boss bemoans flat display

Sir Alex Ferguson rued a lack of "edge" in his Manchester United team’s performance in Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea at Old Trafford.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/BB0AC828052B4807BB4651EFC94AC65D.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,87,800,384

The champions fell to a deflected late Juan Mata strike and the disappointment of a first goalless home game in three-and-a-half years was compounded by Rafael’s dismissal for kicking David Luiz soon after.

Rafael Benitez’s Champions League-chasing side had shaded an encounter that produced plenty of chances at both ends, if not the intensity Sir Alex desired.

"There was no edge to our game but I think Chelsea were the better team," Sir Alex admitted to MUTV. "Training was fine this week and there was a nice edge to it, but today it was missing.

"[Being champions] has a lot to do with it. It’s been a long season for the players and their final really big effort was last week against Arsenal.

"Chelsea's goal was a bit lucky as it deflected off Phil Jones, but it was so late in the game that there was not a lot we could do about it."

Referee Howard Webb brandished United’s first red card of the league season with a minute left when Rafael lashed out following a clash with Luiz deep in Chelsea’s half.

Sir Alex insisted the Blues defender was as much to blame for the incident.

"The referee was bought by the fact Luiz rolled about," the Reds boss said. "He actually elbowed Rafael twice but you know what happens when a player retaliates: he’s always punished more.

"Luiz made it look worse. I don’t think the referee saw it, actually, and he was convinced by Luiz’s reaction."

United’s final home game of the season is against Swansea next Sunday, when Sir Alex will demand more from his players before they lift the Barclays Premier League trophy.

Damn right. The performance was flat, although probably because we have nothing to play for now but I hope we can finish the season with some wins!
"We don’t approach games in an easy way as there is an expectation all the time here," he added. "Maybe this will waken the players up."

Evans eyes winning end

Jonny Evans wants Manchester United to finish the 2012/13 season on a high after the Barclays Premier League champions lost 1-0 to Chelsea on Sunday.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/90D508EE1A444023BC970CBB7239CFA0.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,40,522,234

Having already sealed the championship crown last month, the Reds were perhaps guilty of lacking intensity at Old Trafford, where the Blues sealed a hard-fought victory via Juan Mata’s deflected finish off Phil Jones on 87 minutes.

Evans obviously felt down about the result, but the Northern Irishman is targeting a positive climax to the campaign via consecutive victories against Swansea and West Brom.

“We will lift the [Premier League] trophy next week against Swansea, which will be a big day for us and we want to win that game,” Jonny told MUTV after the match.

“It’s then the last game of the season against West Brom and we want to win that as well. We want to win every game and, going into these last two games, I’m sure the lads will be up for it and we want to make sure we put on a good performance for the fans.”

When asked why his United team-mates struggled to perform against Chelsea, Evans was at a loss to come up with an answer, simply stating his disappointment: “I don’t know; it’s hard to put my finger on why we weren’t up to our normal standards.

“We’ve had a hectic couple of weeks but Chelsea have been our rivals and we’re disappointed not to get three points against them. Maybe they had more intensity in their play because they are pushing for a Champions League spot, but it is hard to say. I think they deserved their victory in the end.

“We got into good crossing positions, especially in the first half, but we didn’t quite find our men in the box – maybe we should have got more men in the box. I think Chelsea set up to counter-attack us and they hit us on the break and we got away with it a few times.”

As for Mata’s winner, a finish which might go down as a own goal as a result of a slight deflection off Jones, Evans was on hand to take some blame, admitting his clearance could have been better.

“I had a bad clearance myself, they found a bit of space in midfield,” Jonny admitted. “They had quite a few men forward at that time and the ball has crept in past Anders, who had a very good game today. We don’t want to lose any game and the way we conceded the goal was disappointing.”

Vote: Man of the Match

Manchester United may not have been in top form against Chelsea but there were still some individual performances worthy of a mention in our Man of the Match vote.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/FBB84C9B144447FABC04E1EE6222556A.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=0,21,600,467

Three of our nominated quartet are defenders which probably suggests there can be few complaints that the Blues snatched the points with Juan Mata's deflected 87th-minute winner.

Rafael had produced an accomplished display up until his late dismissal for kicking David Luiz following a tussle with his fellow Brazilian. Referee Howard Webb saw it as a red-card offence but will that cost the full-back our star man accolade?

Nemanja Vidic and Jonny Evans were effective at the heart of the defence and mopped up the majority of Chelsea's attacks. Vidic made one superb interception to thwart Mata after a slip by Phil Jones in midfield and popped up on the left wing in the first half to set up a headed chance for Robin van Persie.

Although the Reds struggled to impress in an attacking sense for much of the game, Anderson offered some drive and invention before being substituted for Wayne Rooney. Although not always at the centre of things, he was involved in a number of the brighter United moments.

Januzaj eyes big stage

Adnan Januzaj is hoping to play a key part as Manchester United's Under-21s aim to finish the season on a high with Liverpool visiting Old Trafford on Monday night.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/4B5D46BC18E7463190961E5A1703B100.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,26,600,249

The highly-rated teenager has been shouldering much of the attacking responsibility this year and, with the Reds already safely qualified for the Barclays Under-21 Premier League semi-finals, he will looking to impress at the Theatre of Dreams in the highest profile game of his fledgling career.

Januzaj helped Warren Joyce's side defeat West Brom 1-0 at the famous stadium in his last outing and is likely to relish an opportunity to catch Sir Alex Ferguson's eye after being handed a first-team squad number.

"The FA Youth Cup [against Burnley] was the first time I’d played at Old Trafford, which was great," he told ManUtd.com recently. "It will be even better with all the fans there. I was very motivated by it and it was a good feeling to play there. We will try to win everything this year as well [like last year]. I like to win so we will do everything to win the Barclays Under-21 championship, as well as the Lancashire and Manchester Senior Cups. I hope we win it all again this year."

The talented forward also played at The Hawthorns, the venue for United's final match of the top-flight campaign, for the Under-21s. "It was nice to play there and it’s another experience so you are a bit prepared if you might get to play there for United’s first team in the future," he added.

I think this guy has the potential to make that breakthrough into the first team and would be another option in our Midfield if SAF plays him next season.

Valencia's trophy claim

Antonio Valencia insists a club like Manchester United cannot go two seasons without winning a trophy.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/33378648C34E464BA5F5C6BE12348FD0.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,181,600,403

The winger admitted to MUTV that he is only reasonably happy with his personal contribution but elated to take the Barclays Premier League title back off Manchester City.

“We enjoyed it the best we possibly could," he said of the celebrations. "It’s a fact now and you can’t take that away from us. We’ve won the title after a very long season and we managed to achieve our aim.

“Last year was terrible – a trophyless season. We can’t go two seasons without bringing home some kind of silverware so the aim was to win something and winning the title fits the bill perfectly.

“That’s two medals in four years and it’s really special for me. When you work hard throughout your career to win trophies and, when you’re at a club that you adore, like I do, then it makes it even more special to win somewhere where you’re happy."

When asked to analyse his own game, the 2012 United Player of the Year feels injuries have prevented him from consistently discovering his top form.

“I suppose it wasn’t quite what I was hoping for if you make a comparison with last season," he replied. "I’ve maybe not been able to recreate the form from that year. Maybe not the same level fitness-wise and certainly form-wise.

“But looking back, I’m reasonably happy with my contribution. I’ve managed to feature in more than 27 games which is special.

“I think when you’ve suffered a couple of injuries, sometimes it’s hard to get back to those fitness levels where you can play full of confidence and you can show your ability in its best light. Sometimes it takes a while if the recovery from injury is longer than you think. It’s hard to get back to top form and the rhythm of how you normally play but hopefully pre-season will be a chance to get fit.

“When things are not going particularly well and when I’m not on my best form, I tend to be a bit harder on myself because, all the time, I want everything to turn out perfectly. So you do think about your form at these times.”

Tony V being honest about his disappointing form and hopefully once the season is over and he can have a break he can work on improving it for pre season and try to get last seasons form back!:)

Robin van Persie says his decision to swap Arsenal for Manchester United can no longer be questioned as he prepares to lift the Premier League title this weekend.

Van Persie's hat-trick in the recent league win against Aston Villa sealed a 20th league crown for United, which will be lifted after their home clash with Swansea on Saturday.

http://www.espn.co.uk/PICTURES/CMS/47800/47814.2.jpg

The Netherlands forward made the controversial decision to leave Arsenal for rivals United last summer, after a barren spell of trophy-less seasons at the Emirates. Instant success with United, says Van Persie, justifies the departure.

"I wouldn't have moved if I'd had doubts," he told United Review. "Instead, from day one I was almost certain we would win trophies - not in a couple of years but this year.

"I saw the players in training. I saw the way they behaved, the way they lived, their mentality, the way the staff worked, the way the manager and the staff acted.

"When all those elements combine you end up with a team of champions. It also helps when you have so many players who know how to win.

"There were some great pictures taken after the Aston Villa game, but there was one thing missing from them all; the trophy. That's the picture that will be framed in my house; me, lifting the Barclays Premier League trophy. I can't wait for that moment."

Van Persie says he enjoys stopping goals as well as scoring them and revealed his team-mates judge him on his efforts defending corners. Since his £24 million move from Arsenal, Manchester United's 29-goal top scorer has been stationed at the near post when opponents have had set-pieces.

"That's part of my job. I'm not judged on that by outsiders but, I can assure you, I'm judged on that by my team-mates and the manager," he said. "That's something I've agreed to do for the team, so it's just as important as scoring goals. I have a very important role when it comes to defending corners, free-kicks and set-pieces. I love to do it, too,

"It gives me a buzz when I clear a corner with a nice header and then we launch a counter-attack. I'm not a player who only thinks about scoring goals - football has so much more to offer than just goals."

Van Persie endured a two-month goal drought from February to April but said he took solace from helping out with his defensive duties.

"You get spells that don't go so well, when you don't score so many goals and I had one of those this season," he said. "Even so, I kept clearing headers from corner kicks, I cleared balls off the goal-line, I set up team-mates to score goals."

Sir Alex's best £20m signing

Sir Alex Ferguson has described United’s recently-renovated Carrington training headquarters as akin to “a £20million signing”, and the Reds boss believes that not only will it help his current players prepare and recuperate before and after matches, but it could also attract new talent.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/D6D3FF13715444E887333F8600C19616.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=8,57,798,351

The Trafford Training Centre, or Carrington as it’s known by players, staff and fans, will become the Aon Training Complex from 1 July, a partnership that points to the investment made in United’s training facilities.

But it is the recent revamp of Carrington, including new medical and sports science facilities, that Sir Alex feels is a significant addition to the club.

Speaking to Inside United in his regular monthly interview, Sir Alex says: “As I said last year, it could be our best signing. It’s working out at about £20million that we’ve spent, but it’s given us a training facility where all the players are saying, ‘Wow, this is some training ground now.’

“It’s one of the best. And I think if any player were to come here with any doubts about where they should be, they’ll soon find out that this is a fantastic set-up.”

Sir Alex has seen the development of United’s training facilities as a key part of his job as manager during 26 years in charge of the Reds, and while he recognises the historical importance of places like The Cliff, United’s former training ground in Salford, evolving with the times and ensuring the players have state-of-the-art equipment and expertise to work with is essential.

“The Cliff played its part in the beginning – there’s no doubt about that,” Sir Alex adds. “Sir Matt had The Cliff built back in the 1950s, but [by the 1990s] it was too small for the progress that the club had made. Although we did a lot of development of the indoor space in terms of dressing areas for the Reserves, it still wasn’t big enough.

“For quite a while [former secretary] Ken Merrett and I used to hunt around Manchester looking for old bits of ground – we looked at Heaton Park, actually we looked at where City’s ground is now – until we got a wee break and a lad called John Tomlinson, who was in property, worked out a deal with Shell for this place [Carrington], and it’s been fantastic.”

German sides impress Vidic

Manchester United skipper Nemanja Vidic admits he has been impressed this season by Champions League finalists Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/5DFAB56BBBC54C949EF5C2FCB04EAB18.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,1,741,276

The Bundesliga sides defeated Barcelona and Real Madrid in the last four of Europe's premier competition and will compete at Wembley on Saturday 25 May for the trophy.

Vidic watched the games with a heavy heart following United's controversial exit at the hands of Real in March but feels plenty can be learned by analysing the German teams' style of play.

"It's hard to watch these kind of games as you know maybe we could be there," he told MUTV. "But I think, at the end of the day, we should be satisfied with our season. We won the title, which was our priority this season, but we he hoped to do better in the FA Cup and Champions League. But this is life, this is football. Sometimes you lose, sometimes you win.

"Credit to Bayern. I think they play very good football. They play as a team and they closed down the Barcelona players very quickly, going in groups. It's hard to play against these kind of teams. Dortmund played against Madrid in a similar way to show this is the tendency in Germany football.

"I think it's something we should look at. Maybe this is the way other teams have to improve. Over a few years, people were watching Barcelona and saying this is how you should play. If you look at Dortmund and Bayern now, you see that they work as a team and individuals and this is why they are having success."

Well said Vida! Bayern and BVB have been awesome and have really set the benchmark in the Champions League this season, which other clubs will be hoping to follow in the future now.

Landslide win for RvP strike

In truth, there was little doubt which strike would scoop Manchester United’s Goal of the Month award for April.

http://www.manutd.com/~/media/F705FF0B922246F3929E5FFDA29D7E3C.ashx?20130507T151 2192989

So it was just a question of how many votes Robin van Persie’s sumptuous first-time volley against Aston Villa would pick up in the polls across our seven official language websites.

In the end it was a landslide 96% for the Dutchman’s breathtaking effort, which will also be a shoo-in for the Reds’ Goal of the Season shortlist when it is revealed later today.

Van Persie’s hat-trick clincher on a glorious night against Villa came second in our polls with just over 1% of the votes, followed by Sam Byrne’s superb strike for the Under-18s against Southampton.

You can watch van Persie’s goal, and his reaction to it, again in our video above.

Paddy Crerand and Andy Cole are discussing and agreeing the nominations for United’s Goal of the Season in a special MUTV programme at 19:00 BST tonight, Tuesday.

After the ex-Reds have made their choices, the poll will be opened at manutd.com/awards for you to make your choice, and the winner will be announced at the club’s Player of the Year ceremony on Wednesday 15 May.

Sir Alex retires

• Thirteenth league title in 26 years will be his last
• Most successful manager in English football history to become a director of Manchester United FC

NYSE: MANU. Manchester, UK. Sir Alex Ferguson will retire at the end of the season, Manchester United announced today.

The most successful manager in English football history will bow out after the West Bromwich Albion game on 19 May and join the football club board.

Announcing his decision to retire, Sir Alex Ferguson said:

“The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly. It is the right time.

“It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so. The quality of this league winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the long-term future of the club remains a bright one.

“Our training facilities are amongst the finest in global sport and our home Old Trafford is rightfully regarded as one of the leading venues in the world.

“Going forward, I am delighted to take on the roles of both Director and Ambassador for the club. With these activities, along with my many other interests, I am looking forward to the future.

“I must pay tribute to my family, their love and support has been essential. My wife Cathy has been the key figure throughout my career, providing a bedrock of both stability and encouragement. Words are not enough to express what this has meant to me.

“As for my players and staff, past and present, I would like to thank them all for a staggering level of professional conduct and dedication that has helped to deliver so many memorable triumphs. Without their contribution the history of this great club would not be as rich.

“In my early years, the backing of the board, and Sir Bobby Charlton in particular, gave me the confidence and time to build a football club, rather than just a football team.

“Over the past decade, the Glazer family have provided me with the platform to manage Manchester United to the best of my ability and I have been extremely fortunate to have worked with a talented and trustworthy Chief Executive in David Gill. I am truly grateful to all of them.

“To the fans, thank you. The support you have provided over the years has been truly humbling. It has been an honour and an enormous privilege to have had the opportunity to lead your club and I have treasured my time as manager of Manchester United.”

Joel Glazer said:

“Alex has proven time and time again what a fantastic manager he is but he’s also a wonderful person. His determination to succeed and dedication to the Club have been truly remarkable. I will always cherish the wonderful memories he has given us, like that magical night in Moscow."

Avie Glazer said: “I am delighted to announce that Alex has agreed to stay with the Club as a director. His contributions to Manchester United over the last 26 years have been extraordinary and, like all United fans, I want him to be a part of its future.”

David Gill said:

“I’ve had the tremendous pleasure of working very closely with Alex for 16 unforgettable years – through the Treble, the double, countless trophy wins and numerous signings.

“We knew that his retirement would come one day and we both have been planning for it by ensuring the quality of the squad and club structures are in first class condition.

“Alex’s vision, energy and ability have built teams – both on and off the pitch – that his successor can count on as among the best and most loyal in world sport.

“The way he cares for this club, his staff and for the football family in general is something that I admire. It is a side to him that is often hidden from public view but it is something that I have been privileged to witness in the last 16 years.

“What he has done for this club and for the game in general will never be forgotten. It has been the greatest experience of my working life being alongside Alex and a great honour to be able to call him a friend.”

Revealed: How tearful Sir Alex Ferguson broke the news of his retirement to players & staff

The Scot held a meeting with the first-team squad on Wednesday morning before choking up as he addressed the entire staff at the club's Carrington training centre.

Sir Alex Ferguson broke down in tears during an emotional goodbye to Manchester United staff this morning following the announcement of his decision to retire, Goal.com can reveal.

The Scot will step down as United manager at the end of the season following 26 years at Old Trafford during which he won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles.

Ferguson arrived at the club’s Carrington training base at 6.50am this morning and made a series of phonecalls amid intense speculation that he was set to quit.

Once the entire first-team squad had arrived for training, Ferguson held an eight-minute meeting with the players and senior staff during where he informed them of his decision.

Sources say the players were "quiet and shocked" as they left the meeting, with some clearly emotional. Ferguson was the last man out of the room and was seen supportively patting assistant manager Mike Phelan on the back.

At 9.20am, around the same time that United made an official announcement on their website, Ferguson went to the main dining hall at Carrington to address the entire staff, from the tea ladies to the coaches.

The atmosphere was described as "pensive" and "sombre". By then, everyone knew what was going on.

During a speech that lasted between eight and 10 minutes, Ferguson choked up and became tearful as he thanked them for their support over the years and spoke of the wonderful support within the "United family".

Ferguson became particularly emotional as he revealed that some people present - particularly technical staff - may lose their jobs as a consequence of his retirement.

After he finished talking, Ferguson received a standing ovation as he shuffled out of the room, still clearly emotional as he brings an end to an extraordinary career at United since he took over from Ron Atkinson in November 1986.

He was scheduled to hold a one-on-one sit-down interview with the club’s in-house television station, MUTV, at 10.30am and it was unclear whether he still intends to join the United players at Chester races later today.

Rene reveals surprise

First-team coach Rene Meulensteen has revealed he only discovered news of Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement on Wednesday morning at Carrington.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/D1B62BEB2A1241CEB916BD972B662444.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,34,986,400

The Dutchman, who believes the boss must be feeling some relief at making the decision, obviously refused to be drawn on any successor - jokingly nominating Fred the Red as his choice!

Meulensteen was asked by Sky Sports News when he found out about the big story and replied: "Just this morning when I came to the club. He called us into his office and said what decision he has taken.

"It's always been on the cards - there has been speculation every season but the manager kept his cards close to his chest. He felt the time is right now and he's made that decision.

"He's obviously a man that thinks very, very hard and I'm sure he's taken a lot of thought in making this decision. I wish him all the best - he's been fantastic for the club, for Manchester United, and I'm hoping the fans give whoever comes in the same support as he gets."

The manager, predictably, ends on a high after guiding the team to a 13th Barclays Premier League title, the 20th overall, with the celebrations set to go into overdrive at Old Trafford on Sunday when the trophy will be lifted.

"I think we've responded really well to the big disappointment we had last year," added Meulensteen. "There was a determination around the whole place, especially from the manager, and he's delighted we won the title in the way we did."

Aww:(. I hope that Rene sticks around for the new era, his work goes un-noticed.

Steve Bruce says 'humble' Sir Alex Ferguson will be tough to follow

Steve Bruce paid tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson's "humility" after the Manchester United manager announced his retirement.

The Hull City boss played at Old Trafford for nine years between 1987 and 1996, winning three Premier League titles and three FA Cups under Ferguson before embarking on a managerial career of his own.

He says his former boss is always willing to offer encouragement - as he did ahead of Hull's promotion clash against Cardiff last weekend - and says his drive to succeed has had an impact on everybody who has worked with him.

Bruce told Sky Sports News: "Whoever has gone to play for him, this winning mentality that he's got rubs off on you. People ask over the years what he's like and he's so driven and so determined and he works so hard at the job.

"When you finish and you hang up your boots it's no surprise that a few of us have gone into coaching. He sets such high standards that he's very difficult to follow. It's impossible to copy somebody like him.

"He wants to beat you for certain and he does that constantly with us, but he offers you a bit of encouragement. He's always there if you pick up the telephone and he'll always come back to you.

"He's got a humility about him from his working class background where he'll treat the groundsman just as well as he'll treat his star centre-forward. He's got a fantastic humility about him for all he's achieved.

"I spoke to him a couple of days ago and there was no hint of anything about retirement. There was a simple text message and a short conversation wishing me good luck for the weekend and afterwards a text to say well done.

"He'll do that not just with his players who've gone into management, but he'll do that for most managers, especially the young ones.

"He'll always give you the encouragement that every young manager needs."

Act

David Moyes has been installed as the favourite to take over at Old Trafford and Bruce says the Everton boss is a worthy candidate.

But he says Ferguson's shoes will be almost impossible to fill after producing a list of accolades that includes 13 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues.

"Whether it's Jose Mourinho or David Moyes or whoever, I know one thing, it's going to be some act to follow," Bruce added.

"When you look over 27 years at the trophies he has won it doesn't seem quite right that Fergie won't be in charge of Man United any more.

"He has gone on and on and on and 27 years is quite remarkable - and I can assure you I don't think the next manager will do 27 years.

"It's quite incredible that Sir Alex has been in charge all that time and it's an unbelievable achievement. To have 1500 games in charge of Manchester United is, in itself, a record I don't think will ever be broken.

"It'll be not quite the same and it'll be difficult for whoever goes in because he's such a big act to follow."

"I'm a bit stunned that the manager has decided that enough is enough, but I'm sure he thought long and hard about it and it's the right decision for him.

"The 14 and a half years I spent with the boss [as a player and coach] were the greatest of my career. I learnt from the best. He was a father figure for all of us - it's amazing how many players he has brought through the system. He has been an inspiration to everyone.

"That last moment with the fans at Old Trafford is a great feeling but also a sad one. There aren't many times where I have been moved to tears but that day [Ole's testimonial in 2008] was one of those days. And you never know it might be on Sunday [against Swansea] that it hits the gaffer that it will be the last time he leads the team out at Old Trafford. I'm sure it will be emotional for him.

"Everything I do now as a manager is through the experience I gained from working with the boss. Before, during and after games... I always think back to what he did and what he said to us. He was the best manager you could have, an unbelievable man to inspire and motivate you. The very, very best. I'll never forget the loyalty he showed me."

All the nice things from people who SAF helped or from some people outside of United speak volumes of the affect he has had on the game in general, he wasn't some peoples favourite person but he did not care what they thought!

Robbo: Boss is the best

Club ambassador Bryan Robson has paid tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson, describing the retiring Manchester United manager as the “greatest there has ever been.”

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/23CEFC3C633F487C8C775AC71A17A150.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,1,3000,1116

The Reds boss announced his exit on Wednesday, bringing an end to an illustrious career that yielded 38 major honours whilst in charge at Old Trafford – not to mention the various trophies lifted during separate spells with St Mirren and Aberdeen.

As a result, Sir Alex’s place in the pantheon of great managers is secure. However, when asked exactly where the boss ranks amongst the likes of Bill Shankly and Brian Clough, Robbo is clear in his assessment that his former gaffer tops the lot.

“For me, you have got to say he has been the greatest club manager there has ever been anywhere in the world – especially when you think that he has built four or five squads to be successful,” Bryan explains.

“And what he did at Aberdeen as well, it is incredible. To have the success that he had up in Scotland before he came to United was terrific. Because of that record, he has to go down as the very best.”

Famously, the media once claimed Sir Alex was on the brink of losing his job during the 1989/90 campaign until Mark Robins hit the winner in the FA Cup third round at Notts Forest to send the boss en route to his first trophy triumph at Wembley.

And although Captain Marvel didn’t buy into those rumours, nor anybody else at Old Trafford, he does feel that success – as well as the Cup Winners’ Cup win - provided enough momentum and confidence to push on for the inaugural Premier League title.

“People were speaking about that at the time when we played Nottingham Forest and thankfully Mark Robins scored the goal and we went on to win the FA Cup that year, which gave the players at Manchester Untied a little bit of confidence to go on,” Bryan recalls.

“But then the next season, I really did believe that beating Barcelona in the Cup Winners’ Cup final in 1991, which gave the lads the real motivation and confidence to go on and win the title the next year. Thankfully, Sir Matt Busby was still alive at that time because after 26 years, the title was the one that everybody wanted and Sir Alex delivered it. The rest of his success is in the history books.”

Damn right Robbo, there will never be another SAF and Sunday will be such an emotional day!!

Gill: We'll move quickly

United chief executive David Gill says the club will move quickly to announce Sir Alex Ferguson's replacement.

http://www.manutd.com/~/media/901F65A8D98B420296A18B32802B2DCA.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,70,500,256

The Reds confirmed on Wednesday morning that the 71-year-old Scot will retire at the end of the current campaign after more than 26 years in charge.

And Gill exclusively told MUTV that it won't be long before Sir Alex's successor is revealed.

"I’m not going to get into speculation on that [an exact date]... but we will move relatively quickly. I’m not going to define how quickly that is though," explained Gill, who himself leaves the club at the end of June.

"The qualities [needed] are the ones that have been inherent in Manchester United for many years. If you look at what has happened with the two most successful eras – Sir Matt Busby and Alex – they are managers who got involved in the whole aspect of the club, whether it be from the youth team up to the first team.

"All aspects of it, plus that degree of loyalty and the understanding of the football club that it’s not just what happens on the first-team pitch, is crucial to the success of Manchester United.

"Those are the sort of things we’ll be looking at. Clearly he has to have the requisite football experience, both in terms of domestic and European experience, so I think it’s a small pool but we’ll move forward."

Edwards: Reds will cope

Former United chairman Martin Edwards believes the club will cope with the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill this summer.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/FC8DE38711D240BAA417C2E5053E314D.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=0,11,562,430

The manager and chief executive are leaving their roles during a period of great change at Old Trafford but Edwards is convinced there will not be a repeat of the situation that followed Sir Matt Busby's retirement in 1969 when he briefly returned to the helm after Wilf McGuinness' short spell in charge.

"I think David has done a great job and Sir Alex has for almost 27 years," Edwards informed Sky Sports News. "Two key figures are leaving the club at the same time but, you know, Manchester United are in a very healthy position at the moment.

"They have got a good squad that has just won the league, have got resources and have just done a few major worldwide deals. I think Manchester United are in a very strong position and would have thought any manager coming in at the moment would look at the situation and say this isn't a bad team to be looking after in the future. It's a very difficult challenge, following Alex, but I think the resources are there to be successful.

"Alex is aware of what happened when Sir Matt stepped down and any new manager would be happy to have him in the background and imparting his knowledge to them. I don't see the same problem arising again."

McIlvanney pays tribute

Sunday Times writer Hugh McIlvanney, who co-wrote 'Managing My Life' with Sir Alex in 1999, has paid his own personal tribute to the manager.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/760069790F61497A91553AB1081BA6F9.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=0,35,549,443

The esteemed journalist admits to being upset at hearing the news that the boss' glorious reign is coming to an end but feels it is probably the right time to call it a day.

"I was quite moved when I heard that Alex was stopping this extraordinary career," he stated. "But I've a feeling that it's probably a good decision. I know his previous attempt at retirement didn't make much sense and he came back to prove just how premature it was. But I've not doubt this decision has been made in the right context of what's happening in his private life and at the club and that he just knows it's the right time.

"Whenever I think of Alex's career, invariably I find myself reflecting that the real wonder is not so much the heights he reached – although those were utterly remarkable – but the sustaining of the trajectory. Everybody knows that getting to the top is remarkable enough but staying there for as long as he has is a minor miracle.

"People are inclined to misjudge his talents. They talk about his use of the hairdryer as a way of producing performances by frightening players, but that was clearly a tiny part of what Alex was able to do. He couldn't work with these multi-millionaire players and hope that the methods that succeeded 20 or 30 years ago would be effective today.

"Alex produced results, as all really great managers do, by putting players in the position where they didn't want to embarrass themselves in the manager's eyes. They didn't want to let themselves down in the estimation of Alex Ferguson and that meant a lot more than any verbal attacks.

"He learned a great deal from Jock Stein and, of course, Matt Busby and he applied those lessons in a way that would have delighted both of those men. We used to talk about the great triumvirate of Busby, Bill Shankly and Stein and he now joins the ranks of the really great Scottish managers."

Neville hails Sir Alex influence

Gary Neville talks exclusively to MUTV about the impact Sir Alex Ferguson has had on his life...

"I didn't see this [Sir Alex's retirement] coming at all. I wrote a piece last week saying that his job is never complete and he always moves forward and how I could never see him sat in the directors' box peering down watching another manager doing his job with his players on his pitch. It's caught us all by surprise and I am stunned and shocked by it, but obviously completely respect his decision. He's been an excellent judge throughout his life and he'll be a good judge of his situation now and feels this is the right time.

"It's a great loss for football. Looking at the club, the football United play and Sir Alex Ferguson himself, they are a massive part of the Premier League and it's a massive loss all round.

"It's a great job [for someone]. To manage Manchester United, wow, that is the ultimate job. There are three simple things to it for me - play attacking, attractive football, bring young players through and win a championship. Sounds simple! People ask how you replace him and those three things are the criteria if you like which will make a Manchester United manager.

"On a personal note there have been so many great memories. The first championship title [in 1993] when I didn't even play for him was a major thing for me. I'd argued most of my life about how great our football club was and it was the manager who delivered that first championship. I'll never forget how he used to pat us all on the back before every match and then after every game walk round the dressing room and speak to us all. It was the little, simple things for me.

"I just feel honoured and privileged to have been able to play under him - it was an incredible experience. You talk about your parents being the biggest example in life and I would go along with that, but he was a father figure for all of us who came through the ranks and he helped form huge parts of our characters. We all listened to him, soaked up every little piece of information he passed onto us, believed in him and trusted in him. He's been such an influential person in every player's life who has played under him.

"As a fan I'm gutted [to see him go]. You can't put into words what the boss has done for this club, that's why I'm gutted and sad. As a player who played under him I feel incredibly privileged and so blessed to have played in a period which has been Manchester United's most successful and played under the greatest ever manager."

Chicha: Boss been a blessing

Javier Hernandez has paid tribute to Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 71-year-old Reds boss will retire at the end of the current season following more than 26 years at the Old Trafford helm.

Striker Hernandez, who joined the club in the summer of 2010, told TV Azteca in his native Mexico that he is enormously proud to have worked under a manager many in football regard as the best ever.

“When I retire it will be satisfying to say that I was one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s boys,” he said.

“But it’s more than an anecdote for me. I see it as an achievement and a blessing. It’s a source of pride to say I was with one of the best coaches in history.

“Something that impresses me is that he never lost his competitiveness. In spite of everything he won he continues to be hungry. He’s a winner.”

Sir Alex will take charge of two more games for Manchester United: Sunday’s clash against Swansea City at Old Trafford and the Reds’ final match of the season, away at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday 19 May.

David Moyes: “It’s a great honour to be asked to be the next Manager of Manchester United. I am delighted that Sir Alex saw fit to recommend me for the job. I have great respect for everything he has done and for the Football Club.

“I know how hard it will be to follow the best manager ever, but the opportunity to manage Manchester United isn’t something that comes around very often and I’m really looking forward to taking up the post next season.

“I have had a terrific job at Everton, with a tremendous chairman and Board of Directors and a great set of players. Between now and the end of the season, I will do everything in my power to make sure we finish as high as possible in the table.

“Everton’s fantastic fans have played a big part in making my years at Goodison so enjoyable and I thank them wholeheartedly for the support they have given me and the players. Everton will be close to me for the rest of my life.”

David will be introduced to the world as the Manager of Manchester United in due course.

Carrick: Moyes' fine reputation

Michael Carrick says he has only heard good things about David Moyes from fellow professionals who have worked under the Scot.

http://www.manutd.com/~/media/AEBD84B776C84EA1A4B77C0B5BE14B53.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=0,15,600,462

The United midfielder is looking forward to working with the current Everton boss from July onwards and told MUTV he is used to dealing with managerial changes following his time at West Ham and Tottenham.

"I think he [Moyes] has obviously done a terrific job at Everton," Carrick stated on the official club TV channel. "He's been there for a long time now with great success for the resources that he's had and he's well respected with everyone I spoke to.

"All the players who have played for him all enjoy playing with him and say good things about him, obviously enough for him to get the chance to be the manager of this great club. It is an opportunity for him and an opportunity for everyone else to maybe do things slightly differently but keep the success rolling on."

Clearly the first change in manager for more than 26 years at Old Trafford is bound to attract plenty of attention in the media but the England international expects the new man to maintain the high standards demanded by Sir Alex.

"It's obviously a big change because this club's been run for so long under the same person," added Carrick. "I've worked under a few different managers in my past in my career, so I'm sort of used to a little bit of change, but yes, I'm really looking forward to it, to meeting him and getting good training pre-season and hopefully a good future.

"I think he's honest and he's fair to his players as far as I'm aware and I'm sure that's the case. He'll set high standards just as we expect high standards of ourselves and I'm looking forward to working with him."

Rio: Moyes offers continuity

Rio Ferdinand says he is “delighted” with the appointment of David Moyes as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor at Manchester United and believes the new man offers continuity of managerial style and an acknowledgement of the club’s well-established history and traditions.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/E8109350D470485E9B686A4E30A99F87.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,34,787,327

Moyes will officially take up his new post on 1 July on a six-year contract, and he arrives at Old Trafford with the full blessing and backing of Sir Alex, as well as the players.

“We are all delighted,” Ferdinand told MUTV. “I think it was important that the club made a decision quickly and it all got sorted out. I think the club have acted impeccably in that sense. The manager, I’m sure, thought long and hard about his own decision, he made it and then the club acted swiftly and it’s great to see the new manager coming in."

Picking the right man to replace Sir Alex after 26 trophy-laden years at the helm at Old Trafford was always going to be an important decision, but Ferdinand feels that Moyes’ appointment provides continuity.

“Another reason I think it’s a good appointment is that David Moyes will be very, very open and sympathetic to the traditions of the club and he’ll try to continue that and not come in and make changes in terms of the whole characteristics of the club.

“That’s important for a club of this size and important from what’s gone on before. The manager that we’ve got now has implemented a fantastic system, a working system, and we’ve been successful this year and hopefully we can continue that and this guy I’m sure is the right man to do that and take us forward.

“He’s a very honest man it seems, and from what you hear from other players that you speak to and he’s done a fantastic job at his previous club, Everton. They’ve always been a solid team always hard to play against and what he’s always demanded from his players, from what we see, is a great work ethic and I think there are a lot of similarities with the manager that we’ve got at the moment. That’s a big thing that he continues that tradition.”

Opinion: Moyes is the right man

Reds legend Denis Irwin believes Manchester United have got the perfect man to take over and continue Sir Alex’s 26 years of success…

http://www.manutd.com/~/media/806285A9663A43B485C4C6026A425CF2.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=0,1,712,532

I think bringing in David Moyes is a fantastic move, I really do. He is a manager who is going to bring stability to the club. He is very much in the mould of Sir Alex, a Scotsman with a great worth ethic and he’ll demand that the players work hard to be successful.

He has done a fantastic job at Everton with limited resources. A lot of pundits have said that he hasn’t won anything, but he hasn’t had the resources to win anything. Hopefully at Manchester United he has the resources and he will be challenging. He has bigger resources now and it’s a challenge for him but he knows that. Whoever got the job after Sir Alex was never going to find it easy, but he has signed a six-year contract which gives him time.

Everybody might need to show a bit of patience. There’s no doubt that he might have a few bad games as a new manager, but you just need to show patience and Manchester United are very good at that. He had 11 years at Everton and did an unbelievably good job there.

I know all about Sir Alex’s desire and his work ethic and I think David Moyes will be a very similar manager for Manchester United. You see him on the touchline and he is a tough old Scot, very much like Sir Alex. He was recommended by Sir Alex and Sir Bobby Charlton and there’s no higher accolade. He tried to get him in 1998 as assistant manager after he did a fantastic job at Preston. Then he went to Everton and had 11 great years there. He will be sorely missed there, which shows his influence.

He will bring stability to the club at an important time for the club with Sir Alex departing and David Gill going as well. So it’s important that we have stability. We have a fantastic first-team squad and I am sure David Moyes will add to that in the summer.

Sir Alex was here for 26 years and you look at the trophies he won and the way his teams played… young supporters know no different. I wouldn’t say the David will change too much, too soon. I think he’ll look at it and add his own style and personality to the team. But I think what the club is looking at is for David to come in and continue the work Sir Alex has done.

We all look forward to him coming to Old Trafford. He starts on 1 July and he has got two games with Everton to finish off the season, then he can concentrate on things here, bringing his own players and stamping his authority. It’s a challenge, but as a player you want to play for the best club in the world, and as a manager you will feel exactly the same. It’s an opportunity that doesn’t come along very often and he will be really looking forward to it.

Good summary. I agree that stability is very important!!

Vidic hails talented Scots

Nemanja Vidic sees plenty of similarities between new Manchester United manager David Moyes and the retiring Sir Alex Ferguson.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/8FE8070A3596476A9AFB94D9FAD51474.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,26,711,290

Moyes will take over the managerial reigns on 1 July after agreeing a six-year deal with the Reds.

Vidic has been impressed with the job Moyes has done at Everton and the skipper is looking forward to working with the Scot.

"I think he did a great job with Everton," said Vidic. "He is the man who gets his players to work hard and show discipline and I think he did that well with Everton. And in the last few years they've been successful in getting into the top six.

"I think David and Sir Alex share some similarities - they are very passionate, they are both winners and you can see the way they approach the games and how they run things.

"I’m looking forward to working with David and I believe I will have the same success I had with Sir Alex."

In an exclusive interview with ManUtd.com at the unveiling of Sir Alex Ferguson's statue last year, the Treble-winning keeper was full of praise for Arsene Wenger and David Moyes for the work they have done at Arsenal and Everton. It was clear that the Dane was baffled by the mentality of some clubs who regularly change the man in charge.

"I think it’s ridiculous," he stressed. "I think there are only a few clubs, in my opinion – just my opinion – who are doing things in the right way. Everton, Arsenal and ourselves. Arsene Wenger has been at Arsenal 15 or 16 years and David Moyes has been at Everton more than 10 years. Everton are playing well again this season. If you get rid of your manager, new players come in and have to get used to you and everything else.

"Everton stuck by him after they didn’t have the best of starts to last season and look at them now. I think it’s absolutely brilliant what we’ve done and I’m so proud to be part of a football club in the way that it runs its own course, if you like, and sticks by what we believe in. We don’t believe in quick fixes and always have a long-term plan."

RvP: Thank you, Sir Alex

Striker Robin van Persie has heaped praise on Sir Alex Ferguson following the Manchester United manager’s decision to retire at the end of the season.

Van Persie only arrived at Old Trafford from Arsenal last summer but the boss has clearly made a big impression on the Dutchman.

“I am really sad to hear that the manager is retiring,” van Persie posted on his official Facebook account on Friday morning. “But I'm really happy I have had the opportunity and the honour to work with him.

“He is a great manager and, above all, even a greater person. I have to thank him for an amazing year and for making my dream come true by winning the league.

“I wish him and his family the very best.”

Sir Alex will lead United out twice more – against Swansea at Old Trafford on Sunday and then, seven days later, against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns – before stepping down from a position he’s held since November 1986.

Current Everton manager David Moyes will take over on 1 July.

Keane dreams of Wembley

Michael Keane admits he is dreaming of a Wembley appearance with Leicester City in the play-offs.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/F5C66221132A4DD29C78FD150F5887CA.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=39,3,744,529

While Sunday is all about the Old Trafford faithful saying farewell to Sir Alex Ferguson in his final home game in charge, and lifting the Barclays Premier League trophy, the 20-year-old has a big day for his own reasons as he is bidding to gain promotion to the top flight.

The on-loan defender helped the Foxes gain a 1-0 first-leg lead over Watford ahead of the return fixture at Vicarage Road this weekend. As the England Under-21 international continues to impress in the Championship, he is focused on attempting to complete the job against Gianfranco Zola's Hornets.

"Playing at Wembley would be massive," he told ManUtd.com. "I couldn't have imagined it a few weeks ago yet it could now become reality. It makes you so excited just thinking about it that I just want to work harder to make sure we get there. I don't want to get too carried away yet but it would be massive if we can get there.

"It was a big result for us last night," added Keane. "But it will still be really hard for us at their place.

"They have got a few good players coming back for that game so it's going to be difficult although I think we can still do it.

"We had a bad run but always felt we were capable of putting in good performances recently as I think we've only lost one in the last seven games.

"So we're in pretty good form, to be honest, and we're playing really well away from home.

"We can definitely put another good performance in and get to Wembley."

Keane will, of course, miss out on witnessing Sir Alex's emotional farewell to Old Trafford on Sunday due to his engagement at Vicarage Road but he is keeping a close eye on his Under-21 pals and was at the recent 1-1 draw with Liverpool.

"I'll hopefully come back on Monday for the trophy parade," he explained. "I've got to get back for that!

"I was also back at Old Trafford for the Liverpool match. I always watch them on MUTV as well as I'm interested in how they're playing. They are doing very well defensively and I hope they can keep it going and win the league again."

Moyes hails 'superhuman' Sir Alex

David Moyes has spoken of his admiration for Sir Alex Ferguson - the man he will replace at the Old Trafford helm next season.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/259FE13A3B2C4AD380499C5ED3EA9706.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,31,1024,412

It was confirmed on Thursday that Moyes would take over the managerial reigns at United following Sir Alex's retirement at the end of the season after over 26 years in charge.

Moyes hailed his "superhuman" predecessor and explained how he will be missed by everyone in the game.

"It is a strange thing. I don't think anyone thought the day would come when Sir Alex retired. We all thought he was superhuman," Moyes told reporters on Friday.

"I said last week, I thought he was a great example to everybody in their 70s; how you work. We are all living longer, working longer, eating healthier. Life is changing. We are doing all the things you would hope will give us a much longer life.

"He will be sorely missed, particularly by a lot of managers because he always spoke to them. He would always have a quiet word for anybody who was out of work or going into a job. His respect is beyond any real words.

"We are slightly different eras in terms of age," added the 50-year-old Scot who will officially take over at Old Trafford on 1 July.

"I grew up looking at Jock Stein and Sir Alex Ferguson. They were the managers I was looking at in Scotland when I was growing up.

"Sir Alex has always been someone I have admired, then started to compete against. That was daunting enough. Everyone has great admiration for him. Any words I say won't do it justice because of what the man has done."

Statement from Wayne Rooney

There’s a load of rubbish being written about me changing twitter bio saying I have deleted Manchester United from it.
I have never deleted Manchester United from the bio whatever the papers are saying because it was never on there.
All that happened was that I was asked by Nike to add @nikeuk to it – the same as many other sportspeople they sponsor.
Funny, no-one’s written about that though!
That change was made THREE weeks ago and yet people are talking about it as if its something that was put up yesterday..

Statement from Nike

A spokesperson for Nike confirmed: In April, we asked Wayne Rooney and other Nike sponsored athletes to add @nikeuk on to their profiles due to changes in ASA guidelines relating to athletes and social media.

Up, up and away: Manchester United players want retiring Alex Ferguson not skipper to lift Prem trophy

New champions will get back silverware they lost to Man City last season on Sunday - and stars plan to give boss a fitting send-off

http://i4.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article1875396.ece/ALTERNATES/s615/2011-Premier-League-Sir-Alex-Ferguson.jpg

Manchester United's players want Sir Alex Ferguson to be the one who is presented with the Premier League trophy on Sunday.

Traditionally, the champions' skipper - in this case, Nemanja Vidic - gets to lift the pot following the final home game of the season.

But, ahead of Swansea's visit to Old Trafford, the players have hatched a plan for the retirement-bound Ferguson to hold the trophy aloft after each member of his squad has been presented with their medals.

In what will be an emotionally-charged day, United’s players feel Fergie literally picking up his last piece of silverware would be a fitting way to end his 27-year reign.

United and Swansea players are expected to form a guard of honour for the 71-year-old Scot as he leads them at home for the last time.

A source close to the champions' squad said: “The players think it’s only right that Sir Alex should pick up the trophy.

“It’s going to be an emotional day for everybody at the club anyway, but the roar when he lifts the trophy will be absolutely incredible.”

With Ferguson about to bring the curtain down on his United reign, he will be the centre of attention and will also address fans from the pitch at the final whistle.

Tickets for the match are changing hands for up to £2,000, with United fans desperate to be there for Fergie's swan-song at the Theatre of Dreams.

Robin van Persie has paid a glowing tribute to the man who helped him realise his title-winning dream.

Van Persie was lured to Old Trafford by Ferguson for £24million last summer from Arsenal, and at 29, will finally collect his first Premier League winners’ medal.

The Dutch striker, United’s top scorer this season with 29 goals, said: “I’m sad to hear that the manager is retiring.

“But I’m really happy I’ve had the opportunity and the honour to work with him.

“He’s a great manager and, above all, an even greater person. I have to thank him for an amazing year and for making my dream come true by winning the league.”

Meanwhile, Roberto Mancini has written Ferguson a letter to wish him well in his retirement.

The Manchester City boss said he would miss his rivalry with Ferguson, whom he hailed as the best of the last 30 years.

Of their 12 meetings since he arriving at City in 2009, Mancini won five, Ferguson was triumphant in six, with one draw.

As he prepared his City side for Saturday’s FA Cup Final against Wigan, the Italian said he had taken time to write to Ferguson before he leaves.

“I sent a letter,” said Mancini. “But it’s private and confidential. For me, it’s been a great honour and pleasure to compete against Sir Alex for three years.

“It was a great honour to beat him in Old Trafford, and I wish him good luck for his future.

“It was fantastic to compete against him in every derby, as he is a top manager. But he took the decision and we should respect his decision.”

This will be ace:worship:.

Evans eyes easy transition

Jonny Evans believes David Moyes can ensure a smooth transition at Manchester United by stepping effectively into Sir Alex Ferguson's shoes.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/551927044CC94120A1F0F67364112D89.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=132,20,600,194

The Everton boss will officially replace his fellow Scot on 1 July and Evans revealed everybody is already looking forward to working with the new man and attempting to defend the Barclays Premier League title.

After Sir Alex reigned for over 26 years, he will clearly be a tough act to follow but Northern Ireland international Evans shares the club's confidence that Moyes is the ideal replacement.

"No-one knows what to expect," Evans told MUTV. "But we've seen what he's been like at Everton. He's done a great job there. People here obviously know players at Everton and, before it was even hinted he'd get the job, people were always asking what David Moyes was like because of the job he'd done and the work ethic they have at that club.

"Everyone seems to enjoy working with him and I don't see why we can't enjoy it either. He will always have that bit of pressure I'm sure [replacing Sir Alex] but the way the manager is leaving the club, when he does leave, means it's in a good state really. Everything here is set in place so, hopefully for the manager coming in, it will be an easy transition."

In terms of Sir Alex's announcement, Evans was keen to point out that the players only found out on Wednesday, like the rest of the outside world.

"We see the same thing everyone else sees," he insisted. "I think everyone is in the same boat in that respect.

"I think everyone is looking forward to working with David Moyes but a bit gutted Sir Alex is leaving. Obviously, everyone wishes him all the best, he's done a fantastic job here and everyone is grateful for that.

"There had been a few rumours the day before. A lot was said in papers that rumours were flying around during our golf day but it wasn't really like that. We came in the next day and a meeting was called and the manager told us he was retiring. It was still a shock as I don't think anyone has seen it coming really."

There are bound to be tears at the weekend when Swansea provide the opposition in the manager's final game in charge at Old Trafford.

"I'm sure it will be a very emotional day," stated Evans. "We get the chance to work with him after the game leading up to the West Brom match but I'm sure it will be a very emotional day for the fans who have been going to Old Trafford for years and for all the staff there.

"It's always important to get a performance at Old Trafford, no matter what stage of the season and whatever game, it means there's always that pressure. The fact it will be his last home game as manager will maybe give that extra incentive to put on a performance and get a result."

Vidic relishes crowning moment

United captain Nemanja Vidic will have the privilege of lifting the Barclays Premier League crown on Sunday, but he insists it's a trophy all the team share.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/7F43706EF1CE481785CBBE10220B4826.ashx?h=359&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=0,42,560,879

The Reds sealed a 20th league title last month and will be presented with the league crown after Sunday's match against Swansea.

The day will be a hugely emotional one for everyone connected to the Reds as it will also be Sir Alex Ferguson's final ever home match as manager.

Vidic says he is proud to have the honour of lifting the silverware, but maintains that everyone has played their part in this season's success.

"I had the opportunity to lift the trophy after we won the 19th title [in 2011] and it is a great feeling," he told PA Sport and BBC Radio.

"As a captain it is special. It is hard to explain. It is nice when you play for a club like Manchester United and you win a trophy. But it is the same feeling, whether you are captain or not. You are part of the team.

"No-one has given any more or any less. We are a team and we all played a part. I am the captain and I will lift the trophy, but that doesn't make me any different to Robin [van Persie], Michael [Carrick] or any other player. It is the same feeling."

Scholes set to retire

Paul Scholes will end his playing career at the end of this season.

http://www.manutd.com/~/media/EC7DFD5B294A4633AF5E5E256560F492.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,1,591,220

Scholes, 38, previously announced his retirement at the end of the 2010/11 season, but made a shock return to the team on 8 January 2012 when he came on as a substitute in the FA Cup third round victory at Manchester City.

The midfielder was part of the new wave of talent that came through to the first-team during the mid-1990s, and has gone on to enjoy a long and successful career, making an incredible 716 appearances for Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: “Paul is a truly unbelievable player. He has always been fully committed to this club and it has been a real privilege to work with him for so many years. Paul will play at Old Trafford on Sunday against Swansea and will collect an unbelievable but well-deserved 11th Premier League medal."

Paul Scholes said: “Yes, I am finally hanging up my boots for good! Playing football is all I have ever wanted to do, and so to have had such a long and successful career at Manchester United, under the greatest Manager of all time, has been an honour. The team has the right balance and will continue to thrive under the leadership of David Moyes.”

Giggs: A day for celebration

Before this week’s momentous news, Ryan Giggs spoke to United Review about the prospect of finally lifting the Barclays Premier League trophy after the game against Swansea on Sunday afternoon.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/83A99B2ADA5B423991B95036DE9FEA92.ashx?h=359&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=27,69,634,981

This is a 13th title for the Welshman but he says receiving the silverware once more in front of a full house at Old Trafford will be as satisfying as ever.

Of course, the day takes on greater significance as it's a 723rd and final home game for Sir Alex Ferguson, whose farewell address to the fans is sure to be poignant.

But it will also be an occasion to celebrate – both the team’s 20th league championship success and the manager’s glorious 26-year reign.

"To reach 20 is a brilliant achievement," Giggs told the Reds’ matchday programme. "Obviously we won it a couple of weeks ago and that was great to have won it early.

"It’s not often that you have to wait this long to actually get your hands on the trophy, so we’re all really looking forward to it. It’s going to be a great occasion.

"Overall the day is great for the fans, for the staff and for the players and their families – you’ll see all the lads’ kids on the pitch celebrating.

"Sunday is about everyone who has shared in the journey – it should be a celebratory occasion."

Giggs knows the challenge now is for United to retain the title next term under new manager David Moyes.

"This summer we’ll go on holiday knowing we’re successful and all the hard work was worth it," he added.

"But we’ll come back fighting next season to try to win it again."

Manchester United legend Roy Keane spoke to presenter Adrian Chiles about his up-and-down relationship with "great" ex-boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

"It's always sad to see a great manager leave the game, but I think he's made the right choice," Keane said, after admitting that he wasn't surprised to hear the news of Fergie's exit.

"I was obviously very lucky to have played under him, and privileged that he brought me to the club… he generally got it right – he might have made one or two mistakes, particularly I think with me towards the end, but it takes nothing away from the fact, as I said, it was a privilege to play for him."

Keane also dismissed Fergie's infamous 'hairdryer treatment' as more of a media gimmick than a reality that he lived in fear of. "This hairdryer business, it never concerned me!"

I know they fell out, but a nice tribute by Roy Keane.

David Moyes: Man Utd's new boss backed by Sir Bobby Charlton

Sir Bobby Charlton says incoming Manchester United manager David Moyes will overcome the "awe" of working at the club and prove a big success.

Everton boss Moyes will take over on 1 July from Sir Alex Ferguson, who announced his retirement on Wednesday.

"He's maybe been a little bit in awe of everything that happens here - you can't help it when the club has become so big," United legend Charlton said.

"The mere fact he thinks he can improve it is just fantastic."

Moyes, 50, is set to replace the most decorated manager in British football history, despite not having won a major trophy in his 11-year stay at Everton.

But Charlton, who played under former United manager Sir Matt Busby and captained the team to European Cup glory in 1968, endorsed Ferguson's belief that Moyes is the right successor.

And he also insisted Ferguson would not overshadow Moyes, despite becoming a club director and ambassador.

The arrangement is similar to the one instituted when Busby retired in 1969 and stayed on as general manager, with new boss Wilf McGuinness then replaced a little over a year later.

Charlton said: "Alex will help David Moyes. He won't intrude, but he will help him. Like Alex, Moyes has a work ethic and maybe there's something the Scots know that we don't.

"He's going to be quite happy. He's a well-meaning lad. He's very, very professional and I think he will be a big success at our club."

Midfielder Michael Carrick also said he was "very excited" to be working with former Preston boss Moyes.

He told the BBC's Sportsweek: "I'm very much looking forward to moving onto a new chapter with the club and personally in my career working under David.

"I think he has done an unbelievable job at Everton over a long period of time to keep them up there challenging for Europe.

"He hasn't had the money of the top four or five clubs to spend but he has always put a team out there that is challenging and I've only heard good things about him from players that have played under him.

"I'm sure he is going to come here and have a successful time.

"He's not going to have to change a great deal overnight because things have gone so well of late, but he's his own man and he's going to do his own things and we are all fully behind him as players."

Carrick, who was a key figure in Manchester United's run to this season's Premier League title, said he and his team-mates were left speechless when Ferguson, 71, revealed his decision to the players.

"The initial thoughts were we were really disappointed and quite gutted when the manager told us as a team. It was quite sad in the dressing room - that was the initial shock to it but, as time passes, you deal with it and move on.

"He's arguably the best manager of all time so for him to be sitting in the same changing room telling us that it's his time to retire and giving us the reason, it was quite an emotional time and we were well aware of the importance of it.

"It was silent. What can you say after that? Everyone was digesting the news. It was well documented for a day or two in the media that was there was something coming, we weren't quite sure what. So when the boss pulled us together and told us, that was it.

"It was hard to take but we fully understand and appreciate everything he has done, not just for this football club but everything he has done for the world of football in the last 30-35 years."

Goodbye Alex you are the 2nd great manager ever but like I have said your last 2 years in charge have put a slight taint on your legacy

And I am VERY EXCITED FOR THE NEW ERA. I'm sorry but if any of you think Moyes can do any worse team selections/tactical displays you are being deluded. I am not saying he can do a massive amount better(as he is not fully tested at the biggest level) but he can literally do NO WORSE then bringing players out of retirement and play TONY for a whole season.

Many of you (to your credit I will add) stuck by him even when he was bringing players out of retirement , picking horrible teams pretty much every second game and giving us hopeless tactical displays so I really don't see why you should not have faith in Moyes who fergie himself picked

Thanks for what you done Fergie you did a tremendous job

Personally, would of preferred quite a few names over Moyes. Hoping the rumour of Rooney's replacement being Fellaini is BS. Do not want to see Fellaini in the hole with long balls to him week in week out. Hoping Rooney's replacement is a man we already have... Kagawa.
