So David Moyes gone then. Right call for me, but I think the club acted awful in the way they went about it. Somebody leaking it to the press before he was actually told by the board etc, that is disgraceful.

DM is a nice guy and I do wish him well for the future. United players need to take their fair share of the blame too for our awful season and we need a big clear out and revamp in the Summer.

So Giggsy interim Manager till end of the season with Scholesy and Butt back to help with the coaching.

I wonder who our next permanent Manager will be? Looking likely to be Louis Van Gaal.

David Moyes' statement just was dignified and full of class, but I wouldn't blame him for being angry in the way his departure was handled...

The club hardly acted awfully. Leaks happen in every industry. It's not their fault. I doubt The Glazers intended it.

And his statement was hardly dignified and full of class. No mention of the players. Those same players that he happily criticised when the problem was he's tactically inept and has no bottle.

Good riddance.

LMA chief executive, Richard Bevan said:

"The LMA is very disappointed with the nature of David's departure from Manchester United and to read extensive reports in the press, confirming David's sacking, before David himself had been spoken to officially by the club.

"Throughout his time at United, David, as he always does, has conducted himself with integrity and professionalism, values that he believes in and that have been strongly associated with the club and its rich tradition. It is therefore sad to see the end of David's tenure at United being handled in an unprofessional manner.

"David is one of the most talented, knowledgeable and dedicated managers in British football. He has a wealth of experience accumulated in a management career that started when he was 35 and already spans 16 years, with over 800 games in the professional game. David is a three-time winner of the LMA Manager of the Year Award, and without a doubt, he has a significant future in front of him in football management. He is passionate about the game and I know he possesses the drive and resilience to learn from this chapter of his career and move on to a new challenge in the game."

So much crap spoken in one short statement. Incredible.

I can't bear all this talk of the class of 92 taking over, have they got a coaching badge between them.

I wouldn't thank the players either they undermined him from the start. Also amazing how the Glazers are sailing under the rader in all this with all the money they have taken out of the Club, while their rivals have money pumped in. :idc:

PS I would like Carlo, not too keen on Van Gaul

Cesc may well happen now that we will hopefully have an inspiring manager. Just don't **** around with 20m bids. Won't mind Cavani if we sell Rooney. He will play the wide forward role that Van Gaal loves better. If Rooney is staying then it is pointless.

What a win and performance, so happy:). I had goosebumps when Giggsy made his Interim Managers' entrance before kick off and just seeing Scholesy, Butt and P Neville at pitch side too.

Well done to the lads and Giggsy! There was the attack, hunger, determination, passion, creativity and ideas we have missed most of the season.

Rooney won't be going anywhere. RVP is tight with LVG though, so he will be top Striker. Rooney's versatility is a big help for the team and his passion on the pitch is something LVG will probably like.

Jones: Giggs is United

Phil Jones does not know what the future holds for Ryan Giggs - but he hopes his interim manager will be involved with Manchester United "in some capacity" next season.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/D7E50FC3D20C448A9C29217720121D5D.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,188,1764,1181

Giggs took charge of the first team on a temporary basis following the departure of David Moyes and got off to a flying start with a comfortable 4-0 win over Norwich City, a triumph achieved with a brace apiece from Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata at Old Trafford.

Although the 40-year-old is only the boss until the end of this campaign, Jones feels that a player of his experience and success is highly likely to be retained within the club.

“Whatever happens, I am sure Ryan will be involved in some capacity, he has been involved with the club for a number of years and what he has achieved at this club is phenomenal,” said Jones.

“He is a legend at this club and we just hope that we finish the season strongly for him. What he has done in the game and at this club, he has got all of the experience anyone could ever ask for. Hopefully we can enjoy the remaining games.

“There's one thing for sure, I won’t be taking the mickey out of him - if I do, I will be sat in the stands with him! The banter is flying and the lads are buzzing but come kick-off time it is down to business. All jokes go out the window, it is business time and we have to go out and produce.”

When asked for his thoughts on Saturday’s victory over the Canaries, Jones was satisfied with what turned out to be a comfortable win in the Barclays Premier League.

“It is nice to get a win at home and send the fans home happy, give Giggsy the start he desperately wanted and you could tell the lads were right at it today. In the first half we were probably a bit slow but in the second half we really got to grips with the game and we put the game to bed.”

Well said:).

Rio rules out retirement

Rio Ferdinand has insisted he will not be retiring at the end of the season as he hopes to stay on at Manchester United.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/173CE99C0CF14652B8305F4C8687020C.ashx?w=480&h=179&rgn=0,495,1600,1092

The 35-year-old returned to the side for the 4-0 success against Norwich City and produced a flawless display alongside Nemanja Vidic in Ryan Giggs' first game in charge.

By emphasising the fact that a trophyless season is not acceptable at Old Trafford, the defender is convinced the club will put things right in 2014/2015.

"I’m going to continue playing," he told reporters. "Whether it’s here, I don’t know. But I hope so.

"When you have been successful, you don't ever want to look on a negative perspective or from a negative viewpoint. You always look at it and think: 'What can we win and what do we want to win?'

"That will be no different next season, I am sure. Whoever is here, whoever is managing, the aim of this football club is to win trophies and we have done that consistently for the last 25 years. Long may that continue."

Interim boss Giggs clearly has the backing of his long-serving team-mate and there is a determination to end the campaign on a high.

"It is too short a time for us to notice any major changes," explained Ferdinand. "The sessions he [Giggs] has put on have been good and we have enjoyed them. It is always natural when there has been a change in the coaching or management team, invariably, that the intensity goes up because everyone wants to impress and everyone wants to play in the first game for the new manager. This here is a new chance and a new opportunity. That is no different now than what I have seen over the years with different teams and with England.

"Giggsy has got a big responsibility now and it is more important to look forward, with all of the lads getting behind him to make sure that we finish the season as well as possible, give the fans something to smile about and also give him the rewards that his career deserves and in his first dip into management.

"I haven’t looked at the league table for ages because it is embarrassing," Ferdinand conceded. "I don’t want to see where we are. That is down to us as players and we take responsibility for that as much as anyone else. We are where we are. We have to take some form of responsibility and we do. We are not shirkers, we are not people who don’t take responsibility. I don’t think you get to where many of us have got to in our careers and won what we have won without taking responsibility. This is no different."

Ferdinand will feel he should have played more often this season but does he think it has been the most difficult spell of his successful career?

"I don’t know," he replied. "It has been the most disappointing. That is a better way of saying it. We haven’t won games and we are used to winning, that is what we play for and that is what we go to training every day for, to prepare to win. We haven’t done that.

"You have got to accept some decisions that have to be made. Some managers play you and some managers don’t, everyone has got their personal preferences. That is football. Just as a whole, looking at it from a team perspective, we are not where we want to be so that is disappointing."

Jones' debt to Vidic

Phil Jones admits Manchester United team-mate Nemanja Vidic has been a huge influence on his career.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/86DEE2A9FD644696B82ED7EB04A0C5F1.ashx?w=480&h=179&rgn=0,69,1600,665

The skipper is departing Old Trafford in the summer after agreeing a switch to Inter Milan under the Bosman Ruling but is continuing to teach his younger colleagues some valuable lessons.

Vidic started alongside Rio Ferdinand when interim manager Ryan Giggs selected his first team at the weekend, with Jones deployed at right-back and impressing in helping to keep a clean sheet against Norwich City.

When asked by United Review, the official matchday programme, about the biggest thing he has learned from Vidic, Jones replied: "It's just his all-round game. From his communication to his passing to his tackling to his heading, he's got some many great attributes.

"You learn off him every day in training, even if he doesn't say anything, you just watch and learn. He's been a huge influence on my career at United and has really helped me along the way. I owe him a lot and I am grateful for everything he's done."

In terms of the defence as a whole, the key to success is continuity and consistency in the England international's opinion.

"There are different elements to it," he explained. "Communication and concentration, of course, but I think you always want to have a settled back four. That helps everyone in the defence and it's something that's been difficult for us at times this season because of injuries. We all just want to keep improving defensively and as a team as a whole."

Nice words by Phil Jones about Vida. I shall miss Nemanja Vidic playing for United:(:bawling:, what a legend he has been for us!

Anders: Let's end season well

Anders Lindegaard says it is vital that Manchester United end the current season with a winning run and take some momentum into the next campaign.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/652C6D3E79D946B1AF2D285FE5C2C130.ashx?w=480&h=179&rgn=0,134,1676,759

The Reds have the chance to build on the triumph over Norwich at home with two more outings at Old Trafford - against Sunderland on Saturday 3 May and Hull on the following Tuesday night, before rounding the season off away to Southampton.

That 4-0 victory over the Canaries, in the first game of Ryan Giggs’ temporary tenure as United manager, boosted spirits but the Danish goalkeeper agrees it’s important to not lose focus and ensure home advantage is utilised to full effect in the next two games.

“I think we could definitely gain something from doing that,” said Lindegaard. “In these last few games, we can put some markers down and have something to build upon next season. It’s a great opportunity to win back more confidence for the team and the fans.”

The 30-year-old is also convinced that the guidance of the most decorated player in the club’s history has set United up for a good end to the campaign.

“I think this situation to do it in is almost perfect,” assessed Anders. “We have someone guiding us like Ryan Giggs who everyone on the planet respects for what he has done in his football career.

“I must say he’s been great and he has handled everything very professionally. He seems to have stepped in with a huge amount of authority and respect. He doesn’t in any way seem overwhelmed. It’s probably the most difficult management job on the planet right now and he’s been doing great.”

WAYNE ROONEY fears he may be forced to play second fiddle to Robin van Persie should Dutch coach Louis van Gaal take over at Manchester United.

And according to reports, should van Gaal become United boss he wants van Persie to be his captain, not Rooney.

Rooney was due to gain the armband with current skipper Nemanja Vidic heading to Inter Milan in the summer.

But now his chances of being the main man in Manchester are under threat, with van Gaal certainly not shy of making big decisions.

Rio Ferdinand will lift the lid on the David Moyes era at Manchester United in a new autobiography to be published in the autumn.

The 35-year-old defender is coming to the end of his time at Old Trafford and is expected to tell of the ups and downs of his career in the book, which will be called '#2sides: Rio Ferdinand - My Autobiography.'

With the former England centre half heading to the World Cup finals in Brazil as a TV pundit and new manager Louis van Gaal expected to clear the decks at United, Ferdinand may have played his last game in a red shirt.

His book will cover the disastrous Moyes era at United after the former Everton manager succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson last summer and may shed light on the dressing room division that led to his sacking.

Ferdinand has been in and out of the team all season, playing a role in 22 matches in all. His most frequent appearances have come in the Champions League, including the first leg of the quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.

In total, Ferdinand has played 444 times for United, scoring eight goals. He has won six Premier League titles, two League Cups and the Champions League in 2008.

The autobiography, ghost written by David Winner and released by Blink Publishing, is out on October 2.

I look forward to him dishing the dirt on Moyes' useless tactics.

Jones hurt against Hull

Phil Jones suffered an injury blow in the first half of Manchester United's final Barclays Premier League home game with Hull City.

The defender, who started at centre-back alongside Chris Smalling, hurt his shoulder when colliding with Maynor Figueroa as he attempted to reach an Adnan Januzaj corner.

With the World Cup finals on the horizon, England coach Roy Hodgson will be anxiously awaiting an update on the problem, which led to Jones heading straight for the tunnel and the club have confirmed he was taken to hospital.

It presented substitute Nemanja Vidic with a chance to step into the breach, to a rousing ovation, as he prepares to say his farewells to Old Trafford ahead of a summer move to Inter Milan.

I hope that he is OK!

Wilson intends to kick on

James Wilson aims to take his Manchester United career to the next level following his two-goal debut at a packed Old Trafford.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/4BF573C5B7F94406B0065BAAF1B63534.ashx?w=480&h=179&rgn=0,169,3177,1355

The 18-year-old’s pair of strikes went a long way to helping the Reds to a 3-1 win over Hull City, but it was a far cry from his last outing at the stadium, an Under-21 game against Norwich last month.

Wilson showed no nerves in front of a packed Theatre of Dreams, putting United two ahead with a pair of clinical finishes, each following up on set-up work from Marouane Fellaini.

“It was a great feeling, you can’t compare it to anything else,” Wilson told MUTV. ”The first goal was just sheer euphoria and then the second was just a great experience. The ground is a lot different without 75,000 people, but just to play here even in front of a small crowd for the Under-21s is still a great experience to play on such a ground. With all the fans here tonight it was even better.”

Wilson came close to an appearance a month ago, having been on the bench for the win over Newcastle, but having now made his bow, is convinced he can cope with the demands of top-flight football after representing the Under-18s, Under-19s and Under-21s this term.

“I feel like I can deal with the physicality and pace of the game. I just need to try to get as many games as possible under my belt for the experience. If you’re getting on in the club, you have to be progressing so obviously scoring for every age group is a good sign. I’ve got where I am now but I have to kick on.”

Wise words by a young man, who has plenty of potential to develop and is definitely one for the future. What a dream debut!:)

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/7B29C840FD3E49B8AD402670343926F5.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,132,1890,1196

The 18-year-old was handed his first start alongside fellow youngster Tom Lawrence and immediately caught the attention of Old Trafford by opening the scoring on 31 minutes, before doubling his tally in the second half with a real poacher's effort from close range.

Van Persie replaced Wilson just after the hour mark and went on to score the game’s decisive goal, sealing a comfortable 3-1 win for the Reds. While speaking to MUTV after the final whistle, the Dutchman was keen to salute his fellow striker’s remarkable debut.

“James played really well,” enthused van Persie. “I know how hard it is to make your debut - I made mine when I was about 29! I know how special it can be. He made it very special for himself and for everyone tonight. To score two goals is really special.”

Tuesday’s match was also a memorable occasion for Nemanja Vidic, who made his final Old Trafford appearance before leaving the club for Inter Milan. Despite only playing with the Serbian for two seasons, van Persie knows exactly what type of character he is.

“Nemanja has been great,” Robin explained. “He’s been playing here for eight-and-a-half years and the thing I always say about him is that he puts his head where people are scared to put their feet!

“That is Nemanja. He wants to dive for the cause, in a good way. He is very brave, a great player and he’s won everything at Manchester United. It was a special day for him too.”

The Dutchman also reserved a few words of praise for interim manager Ryan Giggs, who has impressed while in charge and came off the bench to make what could be his final playing appearance at the Theatre of Dreams.

“I witnessed two team meetings as I came in a bit late," relayed the fit-again striker. "The one from the last game against Sunderland, and today’s game, were incredible. They were Sir Alex-esque.

“He’s been brilliant and I think he came on without even warming up tonight! Am I correct? He came on without a warm-up, put in some fantastic passes and almost scored. He’s a legend and I think he shows that every day.”

Giggs proud of youth

Ryan Giggs was proud to watch a host of young Reds make their mark during Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Hull City, continuing Manchester United’s illustrious history of promoting from within.

The interim manager handed debuts to livewire winger Tom Lawrence and 18-year-old striker James Wilson, who scored two impressive goals before leaving the action on the hour mark to a standing ovation from delighted fans inside the Theatre of Dreams.

Speaking to MUTV afterwards, Giggs was asked if it is a match he will look back fondly on in years to come. Rather than focusing on his second-half cameo, possibly his last outing as a player at Old Trafford, he was more inclined to praise his talented youngsters.

“Yeah it is,” Ryan answered. “Obviously I managed to get on the pitch but I think the main memory will be the youngsters coming on and doing so well. Manchester United always give young players a chance and it’s up to them to take it. They certainly did that tonight.

“I wasn’t happy with Saturday’s result [against Sunderland] and the performance. I wasn’t angry, I was just gutted after doing so well the week before. I just wanted to freshen things up a bit. The fans recognise young players and will give them a chance if they make a mistake and they took their chance.

"Michael Keane, Tom and James have been at the club since they were nine and Adnan Januzaj since he was 16. It was brilliant to see and they deserve all the plaudits.

"James didn’t surprise me," he insisted. "I wanted to play Marouane Fellaini up with him to add a bit of presence and take the pressure off him a little bit. It worked well, they linked up for the first goal and it was great to see James score the two goals."

Tuesday’s comfortable win over Hull also saw club captain Nemanja Vidic make his final appearance at Old Trafford before joining Inter Milan in the summer, replacing the injured Phil Jones in the first half to produce a typically steadfast performance in defence.

"He played in the last two games so I was only intending to bring him on in the last 10 or 15 minutes," admitted Giggs. "He came on earlier than we expected because of Jonah’s injury but he didn’t put a foot wrong like he’s done over the last eight years. He’s been a brilliant player for us and a brilliant defender."

Amazing words by Giggsy. United always bring through the young players and give them a chance!

Van Persie: We'll be back, trust me

Robin van Persie is still "gutted" about his injury-hit season, although the Dutchman insists he and United will be firing on all cylinders again next term.

The 30-year-old has missed large chunks of a disappointing campaign with a variety of knocks and only registered his 23rd appearance of 2013/14 during Tuesday's 3-1 win over Hull City, stepping off the bench to replace debutant James Wilson and score the game's final goal.

Now fully fit, van Persie is determined to help United bounce back, and speaking to MUTV after the final whistle he was confident about doing just that.

"It was important to end on a high," Robin explained. "Obviously we wanted to do a lot better during the campaign, but it wasn't meant to be. This was good though."

When pressed for an assessment of his own season, van Persie continued: "A bit up and down, I wasn't fully fit and that's where everything starts for me. You need to get a full season in. You can miss a couple of games but not as many as I missed."

"I think I missed half the season. I am gutted about that. For next year I just want to stay fit, do well and compete again. I'm sure we will compete again next year. We'll be back, trust me, we will be back. Trust me. Save this interview!"

Carrick: We'll miss Vidic

Michael Carrick paid a warm tribute to Nemanja Vidic after the Manchester United stalwart bade farewell to Old Trafford in the Reds' 3-1 win over Hull City.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/826770607B1A44F8B75F1A3F918DCA6C.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,135,2030,1279

The Serbian centre-back leaves United at the end of the season, bringing an outstanding eight-and-a-half year stay to an end, and he made one last appearance at Old Trafford against the Tigers after replacing the injured Phil Jones on 22 minutes, following it with a heartfelt speech on the pitch after the final whistle.

Vidic helped United to five Premier League titles, three league cups and the Champions League and, in Carrick's opinion, deserves to be remembered as one of the club's greats.

"You want to win the game but, at the same time, you've got to celebrate Vida," Carrick told MUTV. "We have to celebrate the service he's given the club for so long, having achieved so much.

"He's a leader and one of the best defenders the club has had. It's sad that he's leaving because he'll be missed as he's a top player and an important part of the squad. Sometimes you've got to move on and we respect that.

"I'm sure he must have been touched by the reception he got from the crowd. He's a man of few words so I was a bit surprised to see him get on the microphone at the end. You could see he was touched and there was definitely some emotion there. He's got one game left but that was his last one at this special place. He'll be missed."

James Wilson's two-goal debut and the contribution of another debutant in Tom Lawrence also drew praise from the experienced Reds midfielder.

"James made a terrific debut. I thought Tom did really well on the left too, neither of them were fazed by it. They came in and did themselves no harm, it was great to see that they both settled in well. I tried to make it as comfortable as possible for them, telling them to play their normal game and they did that.

"The manager said before the game that as they were playing well they'll get their chance. They certainly took it and that's all you can ask."

Nice words by Carrick:). Vidic is so going to be missed!

Mata wins second award

Juan Mata has been named Manchester United’s Player of the Month for the second time in his burgeoning but so far brief career with the Reds.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/C7C34D351B8D4BBC9EB6D98A61486AD0.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,95,1436,904

The Spanish playmaker topped the poll for April on the club's official websites and subsequently tweeted a message to the fans who voted for him: "Thanks again! Gracias de nuevo."

Mata was cup tied for the Champions League double-header against Bayern Munich, but he turned in some excellent displays in the Barclays Premier League to win the accolade ahead of fellow nominees Shinji Kagawa and Phil Jones. The 26-year-old scored a superb brace in the Reds’ impressive 4-0 away win over Newcastle United, and needed just 30 minutes as a substitute to repeat the feat against Norwich City in Ryan Giggs’ first game as interim manager.

Voting for United's Player of the Year - at www.manutd.com/awards - will close at 21:00 BST on Thursday, with the result due to be announced later in the same evening during the club's awards dinner at Old Trafford.

First post on the Man U forum (Go easy on me ! ).
Been a fan since 1985.
Giggs is such a class act. We really needed him to stay on the coaching staff.
LVG can do what Moyes found difficult, being tough on the players.
I hope he can bring in world class players even without Champions League football next season.
The only thing that gave me comfort after such an awful season was Liverpool NOT winning the league. Let's hope they slip back out the top 4 next year & those who have heaped so much praise on Rogers & Liverpool eat their words.
I really think the LVG will take us back to the top again.

Van Gaal excited by United challenge

Louis van Gaal is relishing the opportunity to manage Manchester United after leading the Netherlands to third place at this summer’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/A3593E40F01D4139974A42B89F8FCEBA.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,145,2074,1312

Despite guiding his side to a comfortable 3-0 win over the hosts on Saturday, the 62-year-old Dutchman is refusing to go on holiday and will have just two days off at home before officially taking charge of the Reds this week.

Van Gaal will spend time with his players at the Aon Training Complex before jetting off to California to begin the club’s Tour 2014, presented by Aon. While this might appear a tight schedule, the boss insists he can’t wait for the challenge to begin.

“That is no problem for me, I don't need a holiday,” van Gaal said. “It's great to have such an exciting challenge. To work daily with young people is something that I don't need time off to rest for.

“I'm looking forward to it. I've only met two people from the daily management at the club - the chief scout and the chief executive officer. And I've met two of the owners. It's time that I get to know more people at the club.

“I hope the group in Manchester will become like this [Netherlands] one. We have to sing from the same hymn sheet. I hope at Manchester United I can do my best. I will do my best. Whether that's enough for the fans I will wait and see, but I genuinely hope that will be the case.”

I'm excited too LVG:). Think he will do a great job at United and will love it at the club!

LVG has lots of experience and is very professional. He is very realistic about the expectations and challenges ahead and he gets to fulfil his dream of managing in the Premier League. As he said it will take time for the club and players to adapt to his philosophy, it will take time but this is such an exciting era for the club.

LVG also knows what a big club United is of course and mentioned the fact he managed the three biggest clubs in Spain, Germany and Holland. He also mentioned what he did with Holland in the WC, which was brilliant.

Van Gaal relishes Reds challenge

Louis van Gaal says he is taking charge of the biggest club in the world - but says his immediate challenge is to reinstate Manchester United to the top of the tree in England.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/7D0D9D544D5248BAAA1B129382E2CBCD.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,419,1632,1339

The Dutchman was in entertaining form during his first press conference as United manager at Old Trafford and brushed off the notion of needing a holiday, having taken the Reds reins just days after leading the Netherlands to third place at the World Cup in Brazil.

“When there is a challenge like this, I never let it go,” he told reporters. “This is a holiday for me. I like the way I can work.

“I will do my utmost best. That's what I can give. I cannot give predictions [about how well we will do] because you never know. It's the biggest club of the world. Within two days I know already how important Manchester United is. I have to work, I have to prepare a team, I have to adapt to this big club. It shall not be easy but I will do my utmost best and when you see my career you can see what I have won. That's all I can say. The future shall show if I can do that again.”

Van Gaal is already impressed with the worldwide renown of his new club. “It's the biggest club because of how well it's known around the world. In sport you are never the biggest club because every season you have to be prove [yourself]. Last year you were seventh so then you are not the biggest club. But it's well known all over the world. When I was in China or Brazil people are talking about United when I was the coach of the Dutch team. That's the difference.

“There's a lot of expectation but it's also a great challenge because of that. Therefore I have chosen this club. I worked for Barcelona - in my opinion, number one in Spain. I've coached Ajax - number one in the Netherlands – and I've coached Bayern - number one in Germany. Now I'm in Manchester United - number one in England. I hope I fulfill the expectation but it shall be difficult.”

Van Gaal hints at more new faces

Louis van Gaal has hinted that he will bring more new faces into his Manchester United squad after assessing his players, and that he will look to find roles for Paul Scholes and Phil Neville in his coaching set-up.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/35C0AEB3ADA642C692AB93AE5F97C553.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,260,2058,1420

Ander Herrara and Luke Shaw joined the club while the new manager was guiding the Netherlands to the semi-finals of the World Cup, but van Gaal has declared that more could follow once he has taken a more in-depth look at his new charges in the coming weeks.

Van Gaal has already brought Albert Stuivenberg, Marcel Bout and Frans Hoek with him as part of his backroom team, with Neville and Scholes having coached at the club last season.

“My method is always the same. I want to look at the players now, the players present," the boss told his first media briefing since joining the club. "Of course I know how the players play, but I don't know the players under my coaching. In the first three or four weeks I want to see what they can do. Then maybe I will buy other players.

“The players we have bought now - Shaw and Herrera - they were already on the list. I gave my approval because I like them. First I want to see the players performing under my philosophy.

“I have to see how the players perform my philosophy and how quickly they can pick up this philosophy. Now, I haven't worked with most of them so we have to wait and see. It's very important there's a ‘click’ between players and the manager.

“Nicky Butt is already assisting us, Paul Scholes we shall find a role for him and also for Phil Neville, I believe. That's what we want. But it has to also be possible and we have to look at that. We have to adapt to the qualities of these people. It's not an easy job. We have to speak personally with them - that's why we have to wait and see.”

If we won the league this coming season, I'm not sure what would make me happier.
Proving to the tv & radio pundits who have slated us, even when we were Champions.
Sticking two fingers up to the players who did not want to join us.
Or laughing at the Liverpool fans who have never won the Premier League yet think second place is something to celebrate.
LVG will come in & make tough decisions that clearly Moyes was unable to do.
I think it will take a few seasons to build this new team but we really need 3 or 4 more players in this window.
I would be happy if LVG let several of our current players go. Most of them stopped playing half way through last season when it became clear we were not going to win anything.

United reveal 25-man tour squad

Louis van Gaal has named a 25-man Manchester United travelling squad for Tour 2014, presented by Aon.

As the boss explained during his unveiling press conference at Old Trafford on Thursday, he is keen to assess every member of the group during this summer's trip. Alongside the first-team players, a host of young Reds will subsequently fly to the United States.

New signings Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw are also part of the travelling party, but Michael Carrick will unfortunately miss the trip following his ankle surgery this week.

The Reds will play four matches during Tour 2014, presented by Aon, beginning with a match against LA Galaxy in the Chevrolet Cup on 23 July. Further matches in the International Champions Cup will follow against AS Roma in Denver (26 July), Inter Milan in Washington DC (29 July) and Real Madrid in Ann Arbor (2 August).

Every tour match will be shown live on MUTV HD and you can also follow ManUtd.com's live tour blog from Saturday, bringing you news, photos and videos from inside the first-team camp. Please note that the squad numbers worn by each player on tour are not necessarily permanent for the new season.

Tour 2014 squad: De Gea, Lindegaard, Amos, Johnstone, Rafael, Evans, Smalling, Jones, Shaw, Blackett, M Keane, James, Herrera, Cleverley, Fletcher, Young, Zaha, Kagawa, Mata, Valencia, Nani, Lingard, Welbeck, Rooney, W Keane.

Rafael relishing van Gaal link-up

Manchester United defender Rafael is relishing the start of the club’s pre-season and cannot wait to begin life under new Reds boss Louis van Gaal, who was unveiled in a press conference on Thursday.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/5B9F7F516AA441B4B014D65A44C29D5B.ashx?w=480&h=179&rgn=0,55,1280,532

Fresh from a four-week break in his native Brazil, the feisty right-back has set his sights on a solid pre-season campaign which he believes will lead to a better outcome than the disappointing events of last time around.

“I’m very happy to be back after pre-season, we’ve been training for over two weeks now and I’ve got used to that quite quickly again,” the defender told MUTV. “That’s the important thing [to get back to fitness very quickly], we need to get it right on pre-season and do all the things properly and look forward to the season. We all want to get back on track as last season was just not us.”

Like many of us, Rafa spent the summer soaking up all the World Cup action and was particularly impressed with the efforts of van Gaal’s Netherlands. The defender is hoping the steely Dutch boss can bring his match-winning methods with him to Old Trafford.

“I’m very excited," he admitted. "Everyone’s excited to see how he’ll be both during games and away from it. “It’s clear [from watching the boss in the World Cup] that he likes to play with intelligent players. These types of players can change games and often shift from one formation to another. He seems very good at [doing] that.”

“Some of his staff have been here from quite early on, so we have an idea of his methods, but we are all looking forward to finding out more from him.”

Calf injury rules Anderson out of Tour 2014

Anderson sustained a calf injury during pre-season training and has subsequently not joined Louis van Gaal’s travelling squad for this summer’s Tour 2014, presented by Aon.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/A1537D0BD38147DC89F9410C137BC450.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,68,2048,1223

The Manchester United midfielder will remain at the Aon Training Complex where he will continue his rehabilitation ahead of the 2014/15 season, which kicks off on Saturday 16 August when the Reds face Swansea City at Old Trafford.

Brazilian international Anderson joined United in 2007 and has since made 179 appearances for the club, scoring nine goals. He most recently spent the second half of the 13/14 campaign on loan at Serie A side Fiorentina.

I just have this horrible feeling that we are going to keep the players who let us down so badly last season.
Every time I check SSN another one of our rivals have signed another player.
We are making the same mistake again. Leaving it too late to get any of the top names.
It's just so frustrating

Woodward excited by van Gaal arrival

Manchester United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward says new manager Louis van Gaal is leaving an "imprint" on everyone he meets at the club and believes the Dutchman's qualities made him the perfect choice for the Reds.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/176437A228C7470183991F16688115A0.ashx?w=240&h=179&rgn=0,33,3190,2410

In an exclusive interview with MUTV, Woodward explained how he admires van Gaal's direct approach while noting his warmth as a person.

"He's got incredible energy and very importantly he likes attacking football. If you remember the Barcelona team [he managed] in the late '90s, who played incredible, attacking football, and those games we had against them in '98/99, that’s the kind of football Manchester United fans love. It’s part of our DNA," explained Woodward.

"The second part of what he likes is giving youth a chance. He’s got a track record littered with giving young players a break in the first team, who have gone on to be stars. Clearly that’s Manchester United’s philosophy and we want him to continue with that.

"I’ve personally found him very warm. He’s a very clear communicator and very direct. I like that in people; I’m a very direct person myself. He’s a stickler for planning and that’s something we as a club do very well. We plan everything in a lot of detail and that’s going to be a good fit.

"We’ve got someone who has confidence in himself about making difficult decisions and, when you boil down what makes a great manager, one of the key characteristics is making difficult decisions and we’ve clearly got a manager who can do that.

"I’m hearing a lot of good feedback from a lot of people about him and there is a huge amount of goodwill towards him and the coaching staff," added Woodward. "Every interaction he’s having with people is leaving an imprint, which is superb."

The executive vice-chairman also spoke of the importance of having Ryan Giggs involved in van Gaal's regime.

"It was a very easy conversation to have [with Louis] about Ryan. He said he wanted Ryan to be in his group," Woodward added. "It’s very important to us as a club that we have continuity and Ryan is the perfect person to continue that continuity. He did a great job in the set-up last year and has obviously been at the club for a long time, so we’re very pleased about that.

"There is real unity in the squad and Louis clearly has something to give in terms of the special way he has with his players when it comes to binding the team together. We’ve seen that already with the steps he’s taken with the preparation and the training and the things going on around that. He’s going to deliver exactly what we expect him to deliver and in conjunction with Ryan, who has that great understanding of all these players."

Evra leaves United to join Juventus

Patrice Evra is leaving Manchester United and has agreed to join Juventus after eight-and-a-half years at Old Trafford, the club has confirmed.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/DD038084B744451F8D01EE57A243848C.ashx?w=480&h=179&rgn=0,93,1280,570

In a message to United fans on ManUtd.com, Patrice said: "After a great deal of thought I have decided the time is right for me to leave Manchester United. It is the biggest decision of my career as this club is, and will always remain, in my heart."

Evra made 379 appearances for United and scored 10 goals during nine successful seasons at Old Trafford, proving himself to be a hugely popular figure with team-mates and fans alike for his passion and commitment to the club.

The Frenchman joined United in January 2006 from Monaco, where, aged only 24, he became captain and appeared in the 2004 Champions League final. He arrived in Manchester with a reputation as an intelligent, attacked-minded full-back.

Initially he struggled to acclimatise to life in the Premier League and on his debut, a 3-1 defeat to Manchester City, he was substituted at half-time. But after six months he began to make the left-back position his own ahead of Gabriel Heinze and helped the Reds clinch the league title in 2006/07. After that, he never looked and was always among United’s top five appearance-makers in any given season.

Evra won five Premier League titles, three League Cups, the Champions League and Club World Cup. He was named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year three times (2006/07, 2008/09, 2009/10) and in 2009 he made the UEFA Team of the Year and FIFA FIFPro World XI. He also deputised as United captain in the absence of Nemanja Vidic.

Everyone at Manchester United would like to thank Patrice for his service and we wish him well in the future at his new club.

So gutted that Patrice Evra has left United:(. He is one of my favourite ever players. His big character, personality and experience will be missed. Classy guy on and off the pitch!

Evra thanks Manchester United fans

Having agreed a deal to join Juventus from Manchester United and calling time on an illustrious nine-season career at Old Trafford, Patrice Evra released this statement to Reds supporters around the world...

"After a great deal of thought I have decided the time is right for me to leave Manchester United. It is the biggest decision of my career as this club is, and will always remain, in my heart.

Joining and playing for Manchester United has been a privilege, a dream come true and my time here has been so memorable. Through the good times and the bad times we have all stuck together and remained loyal. I have always said you don’t just join Manchester United, you join the family and long may that tradition continue.

"This club is steeped in history and I feel privileged to have become a part of that. Over the past nine years I have met and worked with some incredible people, many of whom will remain friends for life. I would like to thank everyone at the club - teammates, coaches and in particular all the staff who made every single day in Carrington or at Old Trafford a special day.

"An immense thank you to Sir Alex Ferguson for making it all possible, for giving me the privilege to be a captain, to be inspired by the legend of Manchester United and to understand that nobody is bigger than the club.

"My biggest thanks go to the fans. We have had some fantastic times together, we lifted all of those trophies together and that night in Moscow will live with us all forever. Every single time I stepped out in that shirt I knew I was playing for the badge and for a very special club. My passion for this club will live on and I know you guys will go on to enjoy more success in the coming seasons."

Woodward working hard on transfers

Manchester United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has told fans to “watch this space” as he works with manager Louis van Gaal on making more summer signings.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/1994D8C390574F2F9F4C5653508D538F.ashx?w=480&h=179&rgn=0,57,1280,535

Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw have already joined the Reds and Woodward revealed funds are available for the club to bring in more new faces.

But he also admits some players could be on their way out of Old Trafford as van Gaal moulds his new squad over the coming weeks.

"We’ve been working with Louis over several weeks with regards to targets and we’re continuing to move forward on some of those targets," Woodward told MUTV's Stewart Gardner in Los Angeles.

"We are still a huge attraction to top football stars around the world – there is no doubt about that. I hope [fans] will see the direction we’re heading in with the new manager, coaching staff and players, and a commitment to do what it takes to get back to the top.

"We are willing to invest. There is no fixed budget. Financially we are extremely strong and funds are available. Louis is assessing what’s going on and there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes, so watch this space."

Asked if other players could be leaving United, Woodward added: "Yes, I think so. The manager makes that decision. A few players have already gone and there may well be a few others.

"It’s also worth commenting that we’re not in Europe this year, so there are fewer games and Louis may take the view that he wants a tighter squad to bed in.

"If you do the analysis over the last year, Liverpool performed extremely well with a smaller number of players, but that’s a decision for the manager."

While reluctant to set a target for the 2014/15 campaign, Woodward is determined United will return to Europe and challenge for trophies again sooner rather than later.

"We’re a club that absolutely should be in the Champions League," he said. "That’s what our fans want, that’s what our players want and that’s what every member of staff wants.

"We have to strive to win. We’re not here to be an also-ran; we’re here to win trophies to add to that huge, incredible list that we’ve won over many years."

New United away kit for 2014/15 unveiled

Throughout the 2014/15 season, Manchester United will play in a classic white away kit that is instantly recognisable and evocative for Reds supporters around the world.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/34474C6F3F6F406A836C929A00639B0E.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,24,800,474

The new away shirt is a sharp and crisp white that boasts a sophisticated black polo neck collar, complete with a unique black button engraved with the club’s name.

When the collar is open, it reveals a small black devil from the centre of the club’s crest. A red, white and black stripe can also be found on the underside of the collar, as well as a small label that carries the message “Youth, Courage, Greatness”.

Across the back of the shirt is an engineered mesh in a series of chevrons to replicate the pattern used on United shirts as far back as the early twentieth century - and again in recent times.

The new away shorts are black, while the new away socks are white with a black band at the top and a wide tonal stripe of chevrons on the back.

The new Manchester United away kit is available to pre-order from today (Tuesday 22 July) and to purchase in stores or online from Wednesday 23 July.

Early preparations please van Gaal

Louis van Gaal has been delighted with the players’ response to his methods in the training sessions he has presided over as Manchester United manager so far.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/15896B257D4F4FBB8FBD5A2CD6AA0537.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,96,1866,1147

The new Reds boss says his squad have been committed and eager to impress in pre-season preparations so far on tour in the USA.

Speaking at a press conference at Los Angeles' Rose Bowl, ahead of Wednesday’s friendly against LA Galaxy, van Gaal said: "I have to say that it has been fantastic.

"Maybe you think every coach who is new should say that but I mean it. They are anxious to follow the instructions of my assistants. The focus I have seen in the training sessions is top-level, but we have to see if the performance is top-level.

"But I am very happy with the labour of my players in the days I have been with them."

Nevertheless, van Gaal admits his team, who are only three days into the tour, are not near their fitness peak and he therefore expects a tough challenge on Wednesday against a Galaxy side in the middle of their league campaign.

"We have analysed Galaxy and I expect a very organised and tactical team that are aggressive in attack and want to press," he said.

"They are already in the rhythm of the season and we started three days ago. We are not well prepared or fit yet, but I hope we can give a good performance."

Shaw feeling no pressure

Luke Shaw insists he feels no pressure following in the footsteps of Patrice Evra at Manchester United.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/8E7D7F6554BE42FC8CC6F360E92D52BD.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,59,1280,779

The teenager, who arrived at Old Trafford this summer, faced the media in Los Angeles as the Reds prepare for the first game of Tour 2014, presented by Aon.

Earlier in the day, Evra, on holiday in the city, had popped by the team hotel to see his former colleagues.

“I don't feel any pressure to come in for Evra,” Shaw said. “He has been great for the club for the last 10 years and I hope I can carry that on.

“There is always going to be pressure, no matter where you go, but I try not to focus on that. I try to focus on my own game, what I do on the pitch.

“And with the new gaffer you have to impress on the pitch and that is something I am looking forward to, and hopefully in these pre-season games I am looking to show him what I can do.”

The 18-year-old also admitted pre-season with United was unlike anything he’s previously experienced.

“When I first turned up everyone was telling me how big the club was but you don't realise how big it is until you come away on a pre-season tour. It's crazy. Personally, I think Manchester United is the biggest club and it will push me to do my best. I signed a contract here because I know what the club is capable of. I know I will improve at the club.”

Luke Shaw is very wise.

Chicharito's chance to shine

Louis van Gaal has reiterated his intention to give all his Manchester United players a chance to prove themselves – including tour newcomer Javier Hernandez.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/FE5CF18813EA41FA80B5AC1E1753F618.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=366,60,1766,849

Hernandez arrives in Los Angeles late on Tuesday and van Gaal says the striker, like everyone else in the squad, will be assessed after training and playing under his new boss.

Asked directly at a press conference whether he would keep Chicharito, van Gaal replied: "I have to see if he performs how I want.

"Now I can only see what he has showed under the guidance of another coach. He will arrive this evening and I will meet him, we will train and after that he will perform in a match and then I can say something about that."

For similar reasons, van Gaal was tight-lipped when asked about transfer targets.

"At this moment I cannot say anything about that," the Dutchman said. "I want to learn about my players, to know them and when I give the orders, I want to see how they perform.

"That is why I cannot answer this question now. I want to give all the players a chcance to show themselves under my guidance."

As for van Gaal himself, who has been in the United hot-seat for a week following his successful World Cup with the Netherlands, the job is largely as he expected.

"I don't think there is a big difference between the Dutch Federation, Bayern Munich, Barcelona or even AZ.

"The work of the manager is the same everywhere. The pressure I lay on myself is much bigger than the pressure you can lay on me."

Van Gaal’s task when the new season starts is to improve on United’s seventh-placed finish last term.

When asked if, having worked with the players, he could believe where the Reds placed in 2013/14, he replied: "I cannot judge that because I am new in the Premier League.

"When you see the Premier League, there are a lot of clubs that are capable of playing high-level football.

"To be the champions of the Premier League is much more difficult than in the Netherlands, maybe also much more difficult than in Germany, because there you don’t have as many teams with so much money.

"So I have to wait and see and maybe in about three months or four months, I can give you an answer more clearly."

Definitely! I hope that Chicharito impresses LVG, would be gutted if he left but if he did it would be for more first team Football, which is understandable.

Boss relaxed ahead of opening friendly

Louis van Gaal says he is relaxed ahead of his first game in charge of Manchester United.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/F87F70675B24467B888000603C720931.ashx?w=240&h=179&rgn=0,0,1935,1445

The Reds face LA Galaxy at the Rose Bowl on Wednesday night in the United States with fans across the world eagerly anticipating the chance to see the style, formation and tactics employed by the Dutchman. Van Gaal has had a close look at his squad and is beginning to embed his footballing philosophy into the players.

Although the Chevrolet Cup clash will be important in many ways, it is the opening Old Trafford fixture against Valencia that he already has in the back of his mind. After a disappointing season, van Gaal is determined to reward the fans for their unstinting support.

"Your first match is always special when you are coaching in a new club," he told MUTV. "But it's a match in preparation time. I think the game against Valencia at Old Trafford is more the match that I will feel the tension.

"I hope that my team is supported by the fans. That is very important because after last season, the fans are not spoiled, and I hope we can spoil these fans in this season."

Van Gaal accepts he will need to learn to adapt to United after making his first impressions but feels the club will also need to come into line with his way of thinking on certain subjects.

"Maybe it is too big a club," he opined. "Not only in a sporting sense but also commercially. We have to do a lot of things that normally I don't allow. I have to adapt to this big club but I think also this big club has to adapt to Louis van Gaal. I hope we can have some balance to that."

Van Gaal lauds assistant manager Giggs

Louis van Gaal has praised the work of assistant manager Ryan Giggs, whose famed attention to detail and unrivalled knowledge of the club has proven indispensable during the Dutchman's early endeavours as Manchester United boss.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/CE47B3753D20400499EB1A5053F91A60.ashx?w=240&h=359&rgn=23,0,1735,2565

Giggs brought an end to his legendary playing career in May and was immediately hired by van Gaal, who was keen to retain at least one member of staff from the previous regime. As the 62-year-old explained during an exclusive interview with MUTV, his decision is paying dividends.

“First of all, we have my assistant manager Ryan Giggs and I’m very pleased with him,” van Gaal said, when discussing his staff. “I talked with him before I signed. Your first impression is always important and that was very good, and now the impression is still improving because I know him better.

“Also, he’s working very hard, as are all my assistants. It’s important that they don’t have a job that’s 9-5. You have to work very hard when you’re my assistant – it’s not always a pleasant job. But he’s doing very well and I’m happy he’s on my staff.

“I’m used to keeping one member from the previous staff of the club because I want to know the culture and he can advise me. I want to know the players and he can advise me. I want to know the talent of the youth players and he can advise me.

“So I always pick up trainer-coaches from the last season; at Barcelona I did that with Jose Mourinho, at Bayern I did it with Hermann Gerland and now it’s Ryan Giggs. Therefore, I’m very pleased because he knows everybody, he knows the culture better than anyone working at Manchester United, I believe, so I’m very pleased he is in my staff.

“The staff are more important than the players. It’s unfortunate for the players that I say that but you have to implement a philosophy and therefore you need staff who can give me the confidence that they’re doing the things I require.”

Van Gaal is notably pleased by the way the players are responding to his methods, which currently involve double training sessions that are designed to build fitness ahead of the much-anticipated new season.

“They are hard-working players,” the manager said. “They are focused and that’s very important to me. I enjoy working with them and that’s much more important than you can imagine.

"When I see them doing the exercises that I and my staff require, they respond very well and they’re disciplined, and I like that because we need discipline on the pitch when we play a match.

“It might not be what they’re used to but double sessions are normal for me. I have the impression that, for some players, it’s very difficult.

"We have different players now because we have played with non-World Cup players for two weeks and now we have the World Cup players, from England for example. They have to adapt to the level of what is required now.”

Heavy win delights van Gaal

Louis van Gaal was a happy man after his first game in charge of Manchester United ended in a comprehensive 7-0 win over LA Galaxy.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/15896B257D4F4FBB8FBD5A2CD6AA0537.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,96,1866,1147

The Reds got the pre-season tour of the United States off to an ideal start in Pasadena, thanks to goals from Danny Welbeck, Wayne Rooney (2), Reece James (2) and Ashley Young (2).

The quality of United’s football impressed van Gaal but he was most pleased with the way they adapted to his trademark 3-5-2 system, with debutant Ander Herrera sparkling in midfield.

“It is fantastic how they have performed today,” van Gaal said. “When you see us train, you can expect something but not 7-0. It was a surprise, but they were beautiful goals and beautiful attacks.

“The result always matters. With such a result you get confidence. We introduced a new system and played twice on the training pitch, 11 v 11. It is not very much, but the boys are willing to pick up the information. Last week, 10 players who played tonight were not even at our training complex.

“When I see my team playing a new system, it is better to win 7-0 than to lose because the players will then doubt the system. But now I don’t have that problem.”

The 3-5-2 formation, which featured almost entirely different personnel in the second half at the Rose Bowl, is a change from United’s traditional tactics but van Gaal had no qualms.

“When you want to change a system, you must start at once,” he said. “We don’t have time to prepare for other things.

“The other system they can play is 4-3-3 and they have played it for many years. I can change it back if it doesn’t work. With the quality of the players we have, I can play 4-3-3 with three strikers on the bench, but I want to play with two strikers.

“We have four number 10s, so the selection is not balanced in my eyes. I have decided to play this system because of the quality of the players. But if we lose, I can change back to another system.”

Herrera happy with United debut

Ander Herrera says his Manchester United debut is an experience he will never forget after a Man of the Match display helped the Reds sail to a 7-0 win over LA Galaxy in the Chevrolet Cup.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/BF87BB2E31D84CF8AA21DE8C40D1B7D7.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,54,4095,2362

The Spaniard was part of a three-man midfield alongside fellow countryman Juan Mata and Darren Fletcher and impressed throughout the 90 minutes in Pasadena. He also had a hand in a couple of the Reds’ second half goals and the man himself says he was over the moon with such a memorable debut.

"It was a dream for me to play in the red shirt – I will keep this shirt with me always. I hope this is the start of a lot of games for United," he told ManUtd.com. "It wasn't only me in this game though, I think the whole team enjoyed the game and did well. It's the first match and we have done good things. It's a good step and we're very happy."

While delighted with the performance and result after some solid training sessions in the last few days in Los Angeles, Herrera insists it's important to build on the victory.

"The manager said to us afterwards that he was pleased with the game and a good performance but he wants us to keep improving. We have to keep working hard," he added. "7-0 is a great score but it’s a friendly game. It’s important for us to start with a win like this and it will help us keep improving."

Asked about the biggest thing he would take from his opening night as a Red, Ander said: "The fans and the love they have for this club. There were over 80,000 fans to support us – it's unbelievable. We thank them a lot."

Well done Ander Herrera:), he was brilliant. The whole team put in a good performance!

Juan Mata backs Ander Herrera to star at United

Juan Mata has backed his friend and new team-mate Ander Herrera to become an influential figure at Manchester United following the new signing's hugely impressive debut in the 7-0 win over LA Galaxy.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/8A187FED0F834D84A6CDCE3D26C186FE.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,50,1677,994

Herrera was one of just two Reds to complete a full 90 minutes at the Rose Bowl, where he pulled the strings in midfield while notching two second-half assists for Ashley Young to score. That was enough to earn the Man of the Match award in Pasadena.

Mata was understandably elated by his team-mate's performance and is looking forward to developing his flourishing relationship with the former Athletic Club midfielder, who he got to know well while both were playing for Spain's Under-21s.

"He did great," Juan told ManUtd.com. "I know him very well from our days with the Spanish national youth teams and he was very good tonight. I am very happy for him. We have a good connection on and off the pitch and I think he will give us a lot of good things this season."

One of the most fascinating elements of United's emphatic victory over the Galaxy was Louis van Gaal's decision to use a 3-5-2 formation, a shape the 62-year-old used frequently while managing the Dutch national team at this summer's World Cup.

The decision paid dividends as the Reds strolled to a comfortable success, controlling possession while providing a potent attacking threat. As Mata says, it was a positive start considering his team-mates aren't used to the new system.

"We are all pleased with the result but we know this is just the first step," the Spanish midfielder explained. “Some of the players have only been training for three or four days so we have more improvements to come, both physically and tactically.

“But I think we had a good understanding of the new system and the football the manager wanted us to play. It was a good game for us. The manager wants us to play quickly with the ball in the middle, try to look for options and also play with width as well. That’s what we’ll keep trying to do.”

United’s next pre-season tour match is against AS Roma in the International Champions Cup on Saturday, when kick-off is scheduled for 21:06 BST (14:06 MT) at the Sports Authority Field in Denver. Like every other Tour 2014 match, it will be broadcast live on MUTV.

I was so happy watching the game this morning I was laughing. Moyes was such a dinosaur when it came to tactics. Constantly playing people in positions that didn't suit their ability. LVG was complete opposite. He has the system and he fits the player in the position that best suits their ability, so refreshing and exciting.
Once Carrick is back he can do an excellent job as the central CB of 3, with 2 CMs in front. The balance was superb last night and it made the team just click. They only been working on it all for a few days too, imagine how good they be once season is underway.
We have a better squad of players than the Netherlands national team and LVG managed to get 3rd place at WC with them.

I have wanted us to play 3-4-3 concept for so long and really happy that we might be set for this as plan A for the season. :cheer2:

I hope LVG has some real signings in the works.
We have been linked with so many players this summer it seems most rumours are totally false.
We have the money to spend & Woodward has given assurances that more players are coming. But we are really behind other clubs right now.
I did not think the lack of CL football would make it so hard to sign players.

Glad that United won again:). Even though we won LVG wasn't happy and demanded more improvement.. I like that about him, he demands perfection and hoping we do better when this season to start this new era!

Keane enjoys Roma run-out

Will Keane says he is enjoying working under Manchester United's new manager and coaching team, and was delighted to get a run-out in the 3-2 win over AS Roma.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/19D7EF62C9C64568A85ACE64D698FC69.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,0,1291,725

The striker came on at the break as the Reds ran out 3-2 winners in the International Champions Cup match in Denver, as part of Tour 2014, presented by Aon.

Having the chance to play in an attacking role alongside Chicharito is something the youngster relished and he's aiming to build on a solid first week of training in the United States as the Reds head into the second week of the tour.

"It was good to be involved in my first game back and it was a good work-out overall," Keane, whose brother Michael also featured in the second half, told ManUtd.com. "We're disappointed with the goals we conceded in the second half but it was good to get a run-out and I'm sure we'll feel the benefits for it.

"[Before I came on] the manager talked to me about the shape [of the team] and where he wanted me to be with the ball and without the ball. He told me to make sure we stretched the game because there was a lot of space in behind so I tried to do that as much as possible.

"It's really good to play with different players and whoever you play with in this team brings so much quality. I enjoyed having the chance to play with Chicharito up front. He's good to work with, as is everyone. They all complement each other so it was a good experience."

The Reds head to Washington DC on Sunday ahead of Tuesday's meeting with Inter Milan, who lie second in United's ICC group after their penalty shoot-out win over Real Madrid on Saturday.

"When you play for Manchester United, you want to test yourself against the best - we're getting a chance to do that and it's going to stand us in good stead for the start of the season. We're all raring to go and ready to face the challenge," added Keane.

"The tour's been a really good experience overall and I was pleased to get a run-out [against Roma] - I feel better for that in terms of pushing on during the second week of the tour. It's been good working with the manager and all the staff and I just want to push on now."

Good:).

Van Gaal: Zaha will get chance

Louis van Gaal is pleased with the way Wilfried Zaha has trained so far in pre-season and may give the winger a run-out in Manchester United’s next tour game.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/4155CCF0BB024646A2721888C4BFC4C0.ashx?w=480&h=179&rgn=0,39,1439,575

After Saturday’s 3-2 win over Roma in Denver, Zaha is the only member of the Reds' 26-man squad who hasn’t yet played in the USA.

It led to a reporter asking in van Gaal’s post-match press conference whether the 21-year-old was unfit, a question to which the manager responded with typical candour.

"There is no Manchester United player who is fit," the manager declared. "Maybe the boys who have trained already before the tour, the ones who started on 7 July, are a little more fit.

"But the World Cup players are not fit. They have only had four days of training sessions, in the heat. So you cannot say they are fit.

"I have a lot of players who can play in the strikers’ positions. I have already said that our selection is not in balance. I can put six strikers in.

"So maybe next time I will put Zaha in because he is working hard. He is doing all the things I require or demand, so there is no problem."

Wayne Rooney has sparkled so far in the States, scoring twice at the Sports Authority Field to take his tally to four in two games. But van Gaal was reluctant to single him out for praise.

When asked if Rooney had adapted to his new system, van Gaal replied: "You are right but I don't think we have to discuss one player. We have to discuss the team and the team is performing."

Hopefully Zaha will get his chance to show LVG what he can do, but he needs to improve his attitude first.

The team are playing well so far and are slowly adapting to LVG's system, he needs time to adapt to the club and the club needs time to adapt to LVG's ways.

Wayne Rooney is looking sharp so far in terms of fitness, performance and is impressing me on tour from the clips i've seen.

Lingard aiming to progress

Jesse Lingard says he has returned from his season out on loan a better player and is enjoying his experience of being on tour working under new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/C51457CFBD14484DB608C5DFA4468891.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,93,1287,815

The attacker enjoyed loan spells with Birmingham City and Brighton and Hove Albion last term and impressed throughout.

Having been one of the stars United's pre-season tour last year, Lingard is delighted to be in the squad for Tour 2014, presented by Aon. After coming on for the second half against Roma in Denver, he hopes he can continue to catch the eye of Louis van Gaal and his coaching staff for the rest of the trip.

"We knew about the manager's track record before he came to the club and how he promotes youth," Lingard told ManUtd.com. "You've got to wait for your chance but make sure you take it when you get it. All the youngsters have been doing well and most have had a run-out so we're all looking to progress from there.

"Training has been hard work but everyone has enjoyed it. We've been working on some new things which is good for us. We're still adapting to how the manager wants to us to play and his structure but that's something we're enjoying.

"I learnt so much from the loan spells last season. Playing in front of big crowds every week was great for my confidence and I was starting every game too against tough opposition. I think it'll hopefully stand me in good stead for this season.

"My ambitions are just to do my best and break into the first team. I hope I can play some games in the cup competitions and in the league as well.

"There is a great spirit among everyone and we're all working together. You want to be a part of a team like this."

I like Jesse's attitude:). He is one player who I definitely hope makes it at United.

Van Gaal: Conditions affected us

Louis van Gaal was not completely satisfied with his Manchester United team’s performance in the 3-2 win over Roma, which he attributed to the playing conditions in mile-high Denver.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/60DF7908C73E4D29B72CDA2AF55A1A88.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,74,829,540

The Reds claimed three points in the opening game of the pre-season International Champions Cup at the Sports Authority Field, thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney (2) and Juan Mata.

Van Gaal made 10 changes in the second half and the Reds’ performance became gradually more disjointed, as Roma rallied through goals from Miralem Pjanic and Francesco Totti.

The Reds held out but van Gaal cut a disgruntled figure afterwards, bemoaning the heat, altitude and 14:00 kick-off time.

"I am pleased that we have won but it was not a good performance," the Dutchman said. "54,000 people came to watch us but we can perform much better.

"We are not used to this hot weather. I think we didn't play a good match because of the height of the stadium, the air, because all my good passers failed today.

"I said when the World Cup was here in ‘94 it wasn't wise to play here at noon. America has a top sports climate but you have to play football at the right time.

"When you are 3-0 ahead, the only thing you have to do is keep the ball in possession and then the opponent has to run and run and run. It’s very difficult in this hot weather to do that.

"But we forgot to do that [keep possession] and we brought Roma into the game ourselves."

Van Gaal was nevertheless delighted with Rooney’s delicious curled strike and Mata’s impish control and lob. He also praised Miralem Pjanic’s incredible long-range effort for Roma, but disagreed with the decision to award a penalty against Michael Keane for handball.

"Some of our passes failed, the ball was bobbling all the time and we didn’t create so much, but we scored three fantastic goals," he added.

"The pass from Rooney to Mata was unbelievable, despite the heat and the height. Mata was running with his brain at the right moment.

"They also scored one fantastic goal, so then it was 3-1. But the penalty was not right: you cannot award a penalty when a shot hits your hand or arm from two metres away."

It's strange. We are being so strongly linked with so many players then nothing.
It really makes me question if we are seriously after any player.
We have injuries & below par players yet it seems we are having to settle for what we have.
If there are no more major signings before the start of the season then we will be battling for 7th again.
Woodward should go.

Van Gaal credits defenders

Louis van Gaal is delighted with how well Manchester United’s defenders have adapted to the new system he has introduced on Tour 2014, presented by Aon.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/D1DE0203863B4D67B93610949201B312.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,14,1444,827

The Reds’ back five – three centre-backs and two wing-backs – shone once again in the 3-1 win over Real Madrid on Saturday, limiting the European champions to only a handful of chances at Michigan Stadium.

Defensive solidity was also a feature of the three previous games on this tour and that has impressed van Gaal, who feels it is the area most affected by his formation changes.

The boss said at his post-match press conference: "It's amazing that they have picked up a new system like that, because it’s not new for Mata, for example – he plays in his position. Neither for Rooney, Welbeck nor the two midfielders.

"The greatest impact with this new system is on the back line. But we only conceded [allowed them to create] one chance in the first half and two in the second."

Michael Keane and Tyler Blackett were two of the defenders who performed admirably in the International Champions Cup match in Ann Arbor, even if Keane conceded the penalty which Gareth Bale converted in the first half.

Asked if the youngsters would be involved in the first team at the start of the season, van Gaal replied: “Not too early, because we have to see if they can fit in our team.

"You saw them play today and they can do the job but not for a lot of matches – they can do it for one match.

Maybe when you give them more matches, their experience shall increase.

"But today the penalty was not so smart. He [Keane] has to learn from these errors. It’s the same for Tyler – he can also play at this level but can he play match after match? That is the question and I cannot answer that at the moment."

Danny Welbeck limped off with a knee problem in the first half at the ‘Big House’, to be replaced by Wilfried Zaha.

"He had minor problems before the match but he said he could play," van Gaal revealed. "During the match he felt it again so we have to wait and see tomorrow what the reaction is, then we might know more."

Javier Hernandez caught the eye in his 30-minute appearance at the end of the game, sealing United’s place in Monday’s final in Miami with a well-taken third goal.

"He came on and was involved in the play at once – that is very good when you are a substitute," van Gaal added. "We needed that. He also scored a wonderful goal, assisted by Shinji Kagawa and Darren Fletcher."

LVG is the man:), younger players impressed. I hope that Welbz is OK after picking up that knock and am glad that Chicha scored!

Fletcher happy to play elder statesman

Darren Fletcher is relishing his role as one of the elder statesmen in the Manchester United squad.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/17C33C6365584411BCEAA444FD023A36.ashx?w=480&h=179&rgn=133,170,2221,948

The midfielder, now 30 years old, only trails Wayne Rooney in total appearances for the Reds, having clocked up 331 since his debut against Basel in March 2003.

Fletcher has donned the captain’s armband for three of United’s four matches so far on Tour 2014, presented by Aon, during which younger players including Reece James, Tyler Blackett and the Keane brothers, Michael and Will, have been handed a chance to impress ahead of the new season.

When asked about how he feels about his status in the squad, the Scot smiled and said: “I’m glad you used the word ‘experienced’ and not ‘old’! I don’t mind being experienced. You find yourself in that role naturally, in a position where you have to help the younger players. It’s something I do anyway and have done for a while now.”

Having been a part of the Reds’ senior set-up since his teens, Fletcher is well placed to show the current crop of youngsters how to live up to the expectations that come with representing the club.

“I know what’s expected and what it takes to play for Manchester United, so I try to make the younger players aware of a few things and the standards you have to reach. But I also encourage them to enjoy it and express themselves. The biggest thing in my mind is to make sure you enjoy the challenge and not get daunted by it.”

Fletch is a good guy:), underrated player.

Zaha hails US support

Wilf Zaha says the support the Manchester United squad have received during the pre-season tour of the States has been overwhelming.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/FAC8EC7E3BB847919F170A989DD4E6A9.ashx?w=480&h=179&rgn=0,117,2702,1126

The Reds have played in front of over 300,000 fans in four games so far of Tour 2014, presented by Aon. Over 109,000 alone were packed into Michigan Stadium for Saturday's 3-1 victory over Real Madrid and Zaha says all the players appreciate the support.

"The tour has been great and the support we've had from the fans has been fantastic," he told ManUtd.com. "It just shows you how big this club is with the amount of fans who have come out to see us at training, games and even at our hotel.

"Everyone is pleased with the results we've had so far and the new formation is something we're all enjoying. We hope we can keep that going.

"We're determined to win this tournament," he added, in reference to Monday night's ICC final in Miami against Liverpool. That's how things are at a club like United - we want to win every competition we're involved in. It's a dream to play against the likes of Roma, Inter Milan and Real Madrid. Hopefully we get another good result."

Zaha featured in the recent wins over Inter Milan and Madrid and hopes he can keep progressing under new boss Louis van Gaal.

"The gaffer has got high standards and everyone is trying to train and play their hardest in order to perform to their best," he said. "He knows exactly what he wants and how and when he wants things done. It's good pressure that makes you want to do better.

"The tour is about getting fit but you also want to make a good impression for the season ahead. I'm just going to keep working hard and trying my best."

I hope he continues to improve, take his chance and hopefully impress LVG.

Young relishing clash with Liverpool

Ashley Young says “there is no better game” for Manchester United to finish the tour with than a meeting with Liverpool in the International Champions Cup final in Miami.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/097B7A7B8AF34A0FA2C4E1460D226C4D.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,0,1323,743

The Reds’ 3-1 victory over Real Madrid in Ann Arbor on Saturday confirmed United’s place at the top of ICC Group A and in the final at the Sun Life Stadium where Brendan Rodgers’ men will be the opposition after the Merseysiders claimed top spot in Group B.

Young, who netted twice in the win against Real and picked up the Man of the Match award, says everyone is relishing an early meeting with our Barclays Premier League rivals in a game that United are determined to win.

“There is no better game to finish the tour with,” declared Young in an interview with ManUtd.com. “We all know the rivalry with the two teams – it’ll be a great occasion and everyone can’t wait. People may look at it as pre-season but it’s Liverpool and we want to go out and win the game and the trophy.

“It was a fantastic result [against Madrid]. We wanted to be on the front foot from the start and that’s what happened. We only needed a draw but we’re Manchester United so we were only focused on the win. And we want to win the whole tournament now.

“It doesn’t matter that it’s pre-season, we’re here to try to pick up the trophy. We’re in the final and we want to win it.”

Young’s opening goal came at the end of a slick passing move from the Reds who dominated the first half and were 2-1 up at the break after Young had curled a second strike in following Gareth Bale's equaliser.

“It’s always nice to get on the scoresheet and the build-up to the first goal was fantastic. I think there were only two players not involved in it and I’m definitely claiming the second goal!” he added, in reference to his cross which Wayne Rooney almost met with his head. “Wazza told me on the pitch he didn’t touch it so I’m delighted to get two.

“We trained at the stadium the night before the game and the pitch was a bit bumpy but our passing was sharp and that really helped us. You have to deal with the conditions you face and do your best and we did that. Our passing game was fantastic – that showed for the first goal when there were 20 passes before we actually scored - it was brilliant to finish that off.

“If you look at the performance overall and all the displays we’ve put on during the tour things have gone well,” he added. “It’s a new system and a new way to play but everyone has to adapt it and understands the manager’s philosophy. The formation gives us more time to play and more space and we’re all enjoying it. We’ve just played against the European champions and I think we deserved to win.”

Well said Ashley Young:).

The difference between Moyes & LVG is like night & day.
Moyes never gave certain players any chance or hope, while LVG will build up each players confidence before deciding their futures.

Me !. It's on both SS1 & MUTV.
Kind of nervous. I know it's a friendly but this is Liverpool, so there is no such thing.
I just really hope we play well & show the fight that we lost so badly last season.
I think it may go to pens.

Yup. I think it will be a good way for us to see any chinks in this new formation and will give us time to work on it before the season.

Like I said before the real test of LVG and his balls is when RVP returns as simply the 3-5-2 will function a lot better without him. Also Blackett was our player of the tour and deserves to be starting or be very close too come Swansea

Happy for the win. A great confidence boost.
But we still need to sign several new players.
We have already lost Evra, Giggs, Vidic & Ferdinand from last season & maybe more will go.
If we suffer injuries early on we will be in big trouble.
What the **** has Woodward being doing this past month ?.

It's still only pre season and we can't get too carried away, but what a difference LVG has made and the team look to be improving and going in the right direction.

Van Gaal focused on Swansea

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal was pleased to win the International Champions Cup but immediately set his sights on the first game of the Barclays Premier League season.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/7D2A87F85CEB4A9D8013310E7360BEDB.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,39,1280,758

The Reds ended the tour on a high by beating Liverpool 3-1 in Miami, thanks to second-half goals from Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and substitute Jesse Lingard.

It's a first trophy of van Gaal's reign but the Dutchman played down its significance, instead stating that his focus is on the visit of Swansea to Old Trafford on 16 August.

"It's nice for the fans in the USA and also at home that we beat Liverpool," he said at his post-match press conference.

"I think we gave a lot of pleasure to the fans and that's very important. Of course, it's better to win than to lose in pre-season but the most important game is against Swansea City. That's the one we have to win."

After a quiet first half at the Sun Life Stadium, Rooney sparked United's comeback with a neat left-volley, his fifth goal of the tour, and was later named player of the tournament.

"He's always a winner," van Gaal said. "I think he deserved to win the award because he made a lot of assists and scored goals. But we also defended well - there are a lot of defenders who could also have been the most valuable player of this tournament.

"For Rooney, the goal was very important. It was a wonderful goal. You see the attack and what he did to push the ball under the legs of the goalkeeper and also in the corner. It was also a great cross from Chicharito."

Rooney was captain for the night but van Gaal, who has also given the armband to Tom Cleverley and Darren Fletcher on the tour, said he had intended to share it around.

"I'm always looking for opportunities to give players the captain's armband," he said. "Today, Rooney played 90 minutes for the first time. Fletcher has already done it twice and therefore he [Rooney] was the captain. Cleverley also played 90 minutes."

Antonio Valencia came off early in the first half and van Gaal revealed it was the result of United's demanding training schedule in the States.

"Valencia had a feeling in his leg," the boss said. "I had told him before the game that you have to listen to your body. The accumulation of tiredness in this tournament is high.

"All the players want to play but you have to be clever and he was clever to step out. When you're feeling something in your leg, you have to pay attention to it."

On Danny Welbeck, who came off against Real Madrid, van Gaal added: "His reaction today was good, but it's wise we didn't play him."

Lindegaard inspired by fresh approach

Anders Lindegaard is enjoying a new tactical approach at Manchester United under Louis van Gaal and fresh ideas in training from goalkeeper coach Frans Hoek.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/B58D13DAA60047E3A77A90883CB3CFB6.ashx?w=480&h=179&rgn=18,129,1642,731

The Reds have played in a 3-5-2 formation during Tour 2014, presented by Aon, and the Dane has been learning about the importance of the goalkeeper in the new system.

"I've played in a [back three] system before and I feel positively towards it," the 30-year-old told ManUtd.com.

"Like all other players, the goalkeeper has to adapt. Certain aspects of the game are more important than before and our whole approach to the new system tells me how much the goalkeeper's role has evolved in recent years, from being just a shot-stopper to so much more than that. That's what expected of us now."

Taking new ideas on board has been a feature of the recent weeks since he began work with new goalkeeping coach Frans Hoek, but Lindegaard says the atmosphere around the squad, bolstered by an unbeaten run on the tour, has made things go smoothly.

"The atmosphere in the squad has been really good. The manager and his team have a lot of new ideas and new approaches to everything, from how we eat to how we play football. There are a lot of things to adapt to but I've really enjoyed it because the atmosphere has been so great.

"Frans has different ideas to what I've seen before. It'll take time to get used to his new philosophies. We're building a relationship and getting to know each other, both in how we train and how we communicate, and I'm really enjoying it so far."

Mata: Van Gaal has instilled belief

Juan Mata feels his Manchester United team-mates are reaping the rewards of working with Louis van Gaal, whose early endeavours as manager have instilled a new-found confidence and belief ahead of the all-important 2014/15 season.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/F7FA842BB93744659BC3B1803B81366C.ashx?w=240&h=359&rgn=0,83,1765,2724

The Reds claimed the International Champions Cup with an impressive 3-1 win over historic rivals Liverpool, wrapping up a fifth consecutive victory of a hugely successful pre-season tour of America.

United will now fly home to Manchester and the Aon Training Complex ahead of the Barclays Premier League opener with Swansea City. During an exclusive post-match interview with ManUtd.com, Mata explained why the players are relishing the new campaign.

“It was a good tour for us, a good two or three weeks trying to get ready physically and mentally while trying to adapt to the new system,” explained Mata. “Obviously, we didn’t lose a game which is good for the confidence but the most important thing is that we believe in what we are doing.

“We also take home a lot of love from the supporters,” he continued. “It was amazing from the first day until the last - in every stadium, in every training camp and in every hotel. I think [we take home] the support and obviously the new ideas that the manager has brought.

“We are all excited to start the new season. Everybody wants to do better, we want to fight for the trophies and this club deserves that. We will try our best.”

Mata scored his second goal of the tour during the 3-1 win over Liverpool with a deflected effort that put United ahead in the 56th minute to cap an eye-catching performance from the Spaniard, who continues to impress in the no.10 role as part of van Gaal’s 3-5-2 formation.

“I feel good and I feel comfortable in this position. I have to do what the manager wants me to do, both offensively and defensively, and I am trying to do that. It can be a good position for me to try to perform to my best.

“It was important to come back better in the second half against a team like Liverpool so I think those two goals in the 55th and 57th minutes were crucial to winning the game.”

Meanwhile, Tom Cleverley is similarly enthused by van Gaal’s methods and believes United have benefited from the tour of the States. The Academy graduate was also impressed by the manner in which his team-mates overturned Steven Gerrard’s first-half penalty in Miami.

“We weren’t really at it in the first half but it shows we can play not so well and still win the games, which is what we weren’t doing last year. So it is a promising start and hopefully we can take that on into the new season,” Cleverley told ManUtd.com.

“It has obviously been a successful trip,” he continued. “We have got to know the new manager and how he plays. We have obviously come out here and beaten some quality opposition, so that is promising. Everyone has got minutes under their belts also it has been a successful trip.

“What will I take home from it? Just the confidence that you always get from beating the top teams, so hopefully we can carry that on.”

He is spot on:).

Van Gaal: Our spirit is fantastic

Louis van Gaal admits he would have liked more time to work with the players not on Manchester United's hugely successful trip to America but says the "spirit is fantastic" in his squad ahead of the start of an eagerly-anticipated new season.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/FA72D4A77F364DD9B83C71E145FE154D.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,185,1280,904

Van Gaal can reflect on a triumphant start to life as United boss during Tour 2014, presented by Aon, in which he implemented a new tactical system and won five matches, against LA Galaxy, AS Roma, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Liverpool, the latter delivering the International Champions Cup.

"The spirit is fantastic," he told MUTV. "I enjoy working with this group because the players want to show themselves as a team and that is very important. When I see the second half [against Liverpool], after a very weak first half, I think we are doing great but it's better to do it from the first minute.

"The way we have done this tour is a big surprise for me. I'm not used to that. It's amazing the impact that we have in the United States. It is amazing that more than 350,000 fans [have watched us out here] because more than half I think were Manchester United fans. Unbelievable. They were all in red. Beautiful."

It's not just the fans that have impressed the Dutchman. The Reds have looked in great shape despite his limited time in charge, but he is mindful he has not even worked with some of his charges who are back at the Aon Training Complex.

Although the friendly with Valencia will present him with more opportunities to test his squad, van Gaal appreciates the start of the Barclays Premier League campaign is rapidly approaching.

"I wish that we start a little bit later," he added. "For example, Marouane Fellaini, Adnan Januzaj and Nick Powell are not here. Robin van Persie started yesterday so we are not ready yet. But, okay, we will have to train in the season more than ever to make sure we are prepared."

The boss is planning some frank discussions with the players about the future on his return to Manchester as he shapes his squad for 2014/15 before the transfer deadline at the end of the month.

"Obviously, I have seen a lot and that's good," he asserted. "Because then I can give my opinion and also what their perspectives are in the future and then they can choose.

"We have to be honest. We have to give advice to the players now at this moment and not at the end of August. Then we can't change anymore and they don't have a choice. Of course it's difficult to say something after two weeks but I think you have to say something."

Definitely. The confidence and morale is back, it's nice to feel positive again and United will be back to our ruthless winning ways!

Sources have also said Van Gaal is getting increasingly impatient about the lack of transfer activity. Although Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera arrived this summer, both of the deals were effectively finalised last season, meaning there have been no real new buys since last season ended.

Van Gaal did sign off on those two players, but he expected to have the majority of United's business done by Friday -- the day before they face Swansea City at Old Trafford to open the new campaign.

Pathetic. About time Woodward was removed from the role. Another crap season beckons.

WARNING: Major rant coming...................
This transfer window is looking exactly like the last. Chasing players who have little or no interest of coming to Old Trafford.
Ed Woodward more interested in going on vacation rather than negotiating contracts for new players. The Glazers not willing to pay the going rate for world class players. Losing out every time while other clubs like Chelsea & Man City spend, spend, spend.
We are now one day away from the start of a new season & already we have injury worries & no back up.
We have lost Vidic, Evra, Giggs & Ferdinand yet only brought two players who were long term targets for us anyway.
LVG cannot work magic with this squad.
Why are players shunning us ?. It can't be because of the loss of CL football as we had CL football last season & still got nothing.

That was so frustrating. We have a lack of pace, have a lot of problems in Defence and Midfield and lack that extra bit of creativity.

We need another CB and CM for sure. I have faith that once our injured players come back and hopefully we get some new signings that things will improve and I trust LVG will sort out what is wrong eventually!

United sign Angel Di Maria for record fee

• Argentina international midfielder joins on five-year contract.

http://www.manutd.com/~/media/74C900B298F44AA68D273077D74D7E13.ashx?mw=500

Manchester United is delighted to announce that Angel Di Maria has completed his transfer for a British record fee of £59.7million. Angel joins on a five-year contract.

Di Maria, 26, began his career at one of the most prolific youth academies in Argentinian football, Rosario Central. In 2007, he moved to Europe to play for Portuguese club Benfica, before signing for Real Madrid in 2010. The Argentina international has 52 caps for his national team, scoring 10 goals.

Angel Di Maria said: "I am absolutely delighted to be joining Manchester United. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Spain and there were a lot of clubs interested in me, but United is the only club that I would have left Real Madrid for.

"Louis van Gaal is a fantastic coach with a proven track record of success and I am impressed by the vision and determination everyone has to get this club back to the top – where it belongs. I now just cannot wait to get started."

Louis van Gaal said: "Angel is a world-class midfielder but most importantly he is a team player. There is no doubting his immense natural talent.

"He is a tremendously fast and incisive left-footed player who puts fear into the most accomplished defence. His dribbling skills and his ability to take on and beat opponents are a joy to watch. He is an excellent addition to the team."

We don't even have the players, fit at least, to play any formation well enough really.

The defence is still dodgy in terms of a lack of a top draw, experienced, defender and relying on Smalling, Jones and Evans to remain fit.

The 3-5-3 will be criticised heavily but, we're asking Vermijl to come in and make his debut in the formation... Keane playing in it competitively. I think it can work, with the right players. Whatever formation we play, the defence is still not good enough.

It was a really sad sight to watch tonight, Man Utd rarely ever played like that under Fergie, now it's becoming a common occurance and Van Gaal has started off worse than even Moyes at this time last season.

These are the things that Van Gaal needs to sort out if he wants to keep his job.

1. Stop playing a 3-5-2 formation, he hasn't got the players for it and it has never worked in the Premiership.

2. Buy a couple of Centre Midfielders as without Carrick that area of their team gets ripped apart like a strip of wind.

3. Sort the training regime out at the club as they have far too many injuries lately that no other team seems to suffer from quite so severely.

4. They need to buy a left back, a right back, and a centre half because the defenders are not good enough that are there at the minute.

5. Sell Welbeck and Hernandez as they're not good enough for Man Utd, and take a gamble on players such as Adebayor for Spurs, and Weimann for Aston Villa as super subs if Van Persie, or Rooney aren't playing very well.

I do think that Welbeck and Hernandez are like chicken in headlights when they play for more than 15 minutes.

Welbeck wasn't even that bad tonight. He just had nothing played into him.

And Adebayor and Weimann are the answer? Adebayor as a super sub?

Lol. Welbeck is like the only senior player that played tonight that shouldn't be ****ed off to League 1 the next day. Not much he can do when he's running past guys with and without the ball, but is surrounded by pure ****e.

Aston Villa have had a £8 million bid accepted for Tom Cleverley apparently. I wish him well if true, he needs a change and the pressure at Utd is too much.

I hope this means that we have targets ready!

It just means we have enough money for Woodward's travelling expenses
Talksport are saying we have offered a deal to Vidal but nothing yet.
I really hope our deals don't come down to the last hour on deadline day.

It's reported that Vidal has confirmed he wants to stay at Juventus.
So we have been chasing him for three months & 4 days before the window closes he say's no. We have wasted our time & have run out of options.
And now Juventus want Hernandez from us ?!.
They can go take a run & jump.
But knowing Woodward, we will sell him to them & still pay his wages.

Van Gaal hails Shaw's fitness work

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has heaped praise on Luke Shaw as he continues his return to fitness.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/3F61F9FA574B49B5AEB91CCD88188A50.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,15,1514,867

The summer signing from Southampton is yet to feature in a competitive game for the Reds this term after picking up a hamstring injury in training on his return from the club's pre-season tour.

During the visit to the United States, van Gaal revealed he had set up a specific training programme for the 19-year-old in a bid to further enhance his fitness and help him reach the level required at United.

Despite further comments from England boss Roy Hodgson about Shaw’s fitness earlier this week, van Gaal has moved to dispel any doubts over the youngster and applauded him for his efforts since getting injured.

“I said to him in the United States that he came here not fit. So I changed his programme and he did everything that he was asked to do to be fit. Now he is an example in the dressing room and he is training fantastically,” revealed the Reds manager.

“When you want to write something maybe you ask me if he is doing his work or not,” he added during a chat with reporters. “I have read some nasty articles about him. You should know me by now and know that I am open and will answer your questions.”

When asked about Hodgson’s comments over Shaw not being fit, van Gaal said: “Yes, Luke is not fit now because he is injured! But Roy Hodgson cannot judge at this moment because I have never seen him here for a training session.

I think he is referring to the World Cup. But for now Luke is doing a great job.”

Despite a spate of injuries there was some positive news about Michael Carrick’s progress following ankle surgery last month. “Michael is also doing a great job. Today [Friday] he removed his plastic boot. It was a happy day for him,” revealed van Gaal.

The manager did however confirm that Carrick remains one of 10 players missing through injury, along with Shaw, Sam Johnstone, Rafael, Chris Smalling, Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini, Shinji Kagawa, Jesse Lingard and James Wilson.

Rooney: Di Maria worth the record fee

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney believes Angel Di Maria will be a superb signing for the club and worth every penny of his record fee.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/9E3FA87158DE48E6AB62DF2550AD2E75.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,0,1994,1123

The Reds striker has trained alongside the former Real Madrid star and is in no doubt the South American can have an immediate impact on the team's fortunes, starting in Saturday's clash at Burnley.

"You could see the qualities he has as, for me, he is the right person for this club," stated Rooney in an exclusive interview with MUTV. "It's great for everybody. It lifts everyone as it shows the intention the club has got to bring in a player of that quality.

"It's a lot of money to spend on one player but he's worth that money. Having seen him in the last couple of days in training, I've seen the quality he has got and he will be a great signing for us. He is great to have in the team."

Rooney admits to being irritated by the side's failure to hit the ground running in the Barclays Premier League but is convinced it is only a matter of time before everything gels.

"Obviously, we've had a bad start to the season but I'm sure with the manager's philosophy for how he wants us to play, as he said, will take time and it's not just going to work from day one," he added. "It will take time and obviously it's frustrating when you're wanting to click straight away. Once it starts working, I'm sure we'll be successful."

Damn right:).

Van Gaal: Rojo still needs work permit

Louis van Gaal does not believe Marcos Rojo will obtain a work permit ahead of Saturday’s trip to Burnley, though the Manchester United manager says it is only a matter of time until the process is complete.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/7666CFEEE3E542188E872D6D2CF570A1.ashx?w=480&h=270&rgn=0,0,1280,720

The summer signing has been at the Argentinian Embassy in Madrid all week, trying to secure his right to work within the EU. Notably, the difference between Rojo and his compatriot Angel Di Maria is the latter has an Italian passport thanks to his grandparents.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference at the Aon Training Complex on Friday, van Gaal vented his frustration: “I cannot change the law of Argentina. I am Manchester United manager, which is the biggest club in the world, but I cannot change the law. It’s only a matter of time.”

Looking ahead to Saturday’s 12:45pm kick-off at Turf Moor, which can be followed via ManUtd.com’s live blog and the club’s official Twitter account @ManUtd, the boss is confident his side will utilise their superior technical ability against a newly-promoted team that is likely to favour a more direct approach.

“It's not a big stadium but I think it will be a fantastic atmosphere and the fans will stimulate the Burnley players,” van Gaal told reporters. “They will play with a lot of passion and long balls. We have to fight against it. It shall be a very difficult game but we have to show we can play football.”

LVG needs to change the formation. It's clearly not working.
Bringing on Anderson for Di Maria tells you everything that is wrong with United right now.
If we keep playing like this I will be amazed if we are in the top half by Christmas.
The likes of City & Chelsea will rip us apart.

Fatty and RVP are the new Gerrard and Lampard. One has to be dropped and with both being as useless as the other it doesn't matter who it is

LVG is getting away WITH MURDER AT THE MOMENT. His tactical and formation plans to date have BEEN PATHETIC and taking our ONLY CREATIVE PLAYER off in Di Maria just adds to how bad he has been so far

Saturday was frustrating! Say no more.

Daley Blind is now a Manchester United player, welcome he is a good and versatile player:).

I still can't believe we are signing Falcao too, initially a loan deal with the option of signing him after!

Finally good luck to Shinji Kagawa now he is back at Dortmund and also Javier Hernandez, who has moved to Real Madrid on loan initially with the option of a permanent move after.
