If we spend 20 odd mill of Erikssen (Sp) i will be really pissed off Pogba is 100% the player he is as is Cleverly

As for the game Evans , Fabio,De Gea and Young all put a good shift in. Although it is quite ovious to see that Hernandez has been working on his link up play i still think Danny is the better fit

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes there is enough depth in the squad to cope without injured midfielder Antonio Valencia.

The Ecuadorian international, who has been so influential recently, injured his hamstring in last night’s 2-0 Europa League in at Ajax but Ferdinand is remaining calm about his imminent absence.

“It's a really big blow,” he told the club’s official website. “Antonio's been a fantastic player for us this season.

“But when somebody gets injured or loses form at this club the manager can always call upon another player to perform.”

Ferdinand cited the return of Tom Cleverley, Phil Jones and Nani as the major reasons for not worrying too much about Valencia’s injury.

“It's important to recognise we had a few players who have been out recently and were able to get a few minutes under their belts. That was good,” he added.

“In Tom's case, he's an all-round player and the sort of guy who's going to be beneficial to the team. He's got a lot of energy and he's a good passer of the ball. It's good to see him back.”

Nemanja Vidic could be set to return to play a part in Manchester United's title challenge, according to reports.

The Daily Mail reports that the 30-year-old is making good progress in his rehabilitation from surgery on his right cruciate ligament and could be available for the latter stages of the season.

It was initially feared when Vidic sustained the injury, in United's shock 2-1 loss to Basel, that he would be out for at least the rest of the season.

The United captain had set his focus on getting ready for the 2012-13 campaign, but now he could help his team-mates in getting over the finishing line as they battle for domestic glory and Europa League success.

Sir Alex Ferguson's medical men are still wary about rushing Vidic back too soon, with United's pre-season tour of Asia the initial target, but it is understood that the former Serbia centre-half has made such quick progress that he has begun to put more weight onto his knee in his fitness sessions.

This would be such a boost if true but I hope he does not rush his return:).

Ashley Young was one of the players name-checked by Roy Keane when the ex-Manchester United captain delivered his stinging assessment of their Champions League failure.

Along with Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, Keane believed Old Trafford’s latest generation had been given a reality check after initially being lauded.

It was hard to argue with the Irishman’s criticism as United were humbled in a ‘gimme’ of a group in a tournament in which they’ve graced three of the last four finals.

Likewise, it was difficult not to agree with Sir Alex Ferguson’s assertion that he is presiding over the most talented group of young players since Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and David Beckham emerged.

The Champions League proved too unforgiving for a squad decimated by injury and shorn of the experience of Scholes, Gary Neville, Edwin van der Sar, John O’Shea and Wes Brown from the previous season.

But in keeping pace with leaders City at the top of the table, Ferguson’s side have cushioned that crushing disappointment in Europe.

And in recent wins against City, Arsenal and Liverpool, as well as coming back from three goals down to earn a draw at Chelsea, United’s starlets have gone a long way to answering Keane’s criticism.

They got their Europa League campaign off to a winning start at Ajax on Thursday night, with Young scoring the opening goal in the 2-0 first leg victory in Amsterdam.

It was his first goal since September when he made such a promising start to his United career.

And it continued United’s impressive form since defeat in Basle provoked such consternation from Keane.

“Everyone is entitled to their opinion,” said Young.

“I’ve got to concentrate on my game and do well.

“I think the team has been brilliant throughout the season. There have obviously been blips, but we have the strength of character to bounce back from that.

“I think the boys have done tremendously well in the last few weeks and we showed that especially in the second half against Ajax.

“Obviously it was disappointing to go out of the Champions League, but that is in the past and we’ve got to look forward to this competition now.

“Not many of the players have played in it and we want to win.”

Young and the rest of United’s starlets received glowing praise after a start to the season that saw them come back to beat City in the Community Shield and record league wins against Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea.

JAVIER HERNANDEZ insists he has no problem with his role as Manchester United's new supersub.
The Mexican striker has already netted 29 goals in just 18 months at the club — 10 of which have come from the bench.

That tally means only United hero Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has scored more as a substitute.

The Norwegian scored 28 from 150 sub appearances but Hernandez's 10 goals have come from only 30 games.

And while many players would voice their disappointment at only playing a bit-part role for their side, Chicharito is more than happy to come on as an impact player.

The 23-year-old said: "I just want to help my team. I don't care if I'm on the bench.

"Last year I was on the bench at the start and then I was in the team towards the end of the season. The gaffer has the answers.

"Every player in every team wants to play as many minutes as possible, but I don't care if I start or I'm a substitute.

"I just want to enjoy it. I am living a dream to play for Manchester United."

Red Devils boss Alex Ferguson put Solskjaer's success down to the intense way he watched and studied a game from the bench.

Hernandez though cannot put his finger on why he has been so effective as a sub and admits it could all just be a bit of luck.

He added: "I don't know what makes me effective as a substitute. I don't have the answer.

"In football you can't always come up with a reason, because of this or that.

"If I play one minute, 10 minutes or 90 minutes I try to play the same. My mind is always to do my best and help my team.

"There are some times in the game when we need to score and perhaps I have had a little bit of luck."

Chris Smalling has his sights set on a league and European double, and insists that Manchester United will do everything they can to win the Europa League this season.

As the Red Devils prepare for their last-32 second leg clash with Ajax at Old Trafford, the 22-year-old defender is set to return from a three-game absence to face the Eredivisie giants on Thursday.

Sir Alex Ferguson named a strong line-up in last week's 2-0 first leg victory at the Amsterdam Arena, dispelling the notion that United would not be taking the competition seriously, having been knocked out of the Champions League in the group stages back in December.

But Smalling is adamant that Europa League success is high on the players' list of agendas, and reassured any doubters that they will be "giving their all" to reach the final.

"You only need to look at the teams who are still in the Europa League to realise it's a competition worth winning," he told Inside United and ManUtd.com.

"I mean, eight of the teams were competing in the Champions League earlier this season and a lot of the others have done so previously. The Europa League is a strong competition and there are plenty of mouth-watering ties in this phase.

"Obviously we'd still like to be in the Champions League but we're looking at the Europa League as a second chance. We're going to go out there and show Europe we can still perform and we can still win trophies.

"We want to reach the final, although we know it won't be easy. All of the players will be going out on the pitch and giving our all to reach the final."

In his first season at United, Smalling was part of the squad that claimed the Premier League crown, and that taste of silverware has only made the former Fulham starlet's desire for more trophies even stronger.

"I was lucky to win the league in my first season and, at the risk of sounding greedy, I want to win the league every year," he added. "That's how it should be at Manchester United.

"In fact, I'd be disappointed if we didn't win at least one or two trophies every season. I don't feel like a new boy at all anymore. I've been here for 18 months, so I feel well and truly settled.

"I think I've learnt a lot since I joined and I'm striving all the time to improve because I want to be a part of many more title wins in the future."

Manchester United have opened talks with winger Nani as they look to tie him down to a four-year contract, according to The Sun.

Despite having two years yet to run on his current contract, the new deal would see Nani's basic wage rise from £90,000 to a reported £130,000 a week.

The increase would see him join the same bracket as Old Trafford's highest earners and cement his place as one of Sir Alex Ferguson's key men.

The winger, 24, has been in inspired form this season and Ferguson seems confident that the Portuguese international can surpass his former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo's achievements and become a United legend.

Despite an unconvincing start to life in England, the £18 million signing from Sporting Lisbon has improved rapidly since 2007, and was last year voted player's player of the year by his team-mates.

United also appear ready to spend further on their squad after reports recorded a profit of £175m over the last six months.

Tom Cleverley says he is back to full match sharpness and ready to play his part in Manchester United's quest for domestic and European glory.

An ankle injury picked up in October forced the promising midfielder to miss a large chunk of the season, with an impressive opening to the campaign brought to an abrupt halt.

Cleverley has, however, returned to the Red Devils fold over recent weeks and played just over an hour in their 2-0 victory over Ajax in the first leg of their Europa League last-32 encounter.

Sir Alex Ferguson has vowed to give the 22-year-old a full run-out in the return date on Thursday, as United look to take another positive step towards continental success.

Cleverley claims he is in the best possible shape ahead of that fixture, with a spell on the sidelines having left him fresher than most for the end of season run-in.

"It's good to be back," he told United's official website.

"It's massively frustrating to be out for that length of time but I'm back now, I'm fresh, I'm 100 per cent and looking forward to the end of the season."

Cleverley is among those hoping a productive end to the season will lead to a Euro 2012 call-up, but he insists he is giving little thought to international recognition right now.

"I'm just concentrating on tomorrow night and then Sunday (against Norwich), for my club," he added.

"If I can get into some good form between now and the end of the season, I'd be more than happy to be involved in the European Championship this summer."

Manchester United star Nani has admitted he is struggling to regain his top form since returning from injury.

The Portugal international made a tentative return against Ajax last week after almost a month on the sidelines with a foot injury.

And the 25-year-old then played the full 90 minutes of the second-leg encounter with the Dutch champions at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

But, despite clipping the crossbar with one second-half effort, it was a subdued performance from the winger as United only succeeded in creeping through to the last 16 of the Europa League.

With Antonio Valencia having suffered a hamstring injury in Amsterdam last week and the title race heating up, Sir Alex Ferguson could do with a fit and flying Nani for the upcoming trips to Norwich and Tottenham.

Yet the player himself feels he is still short of his best and will need to work hard to recapture his form.

"It has been difficult to get the consistency," said Nani.

"I am getting there but I need more minutes. I will work hard to come back because we need every player.

"Just now I am not at my best but I will try to recover my form as quickly as possible."

Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs has revealed that he is relishing the Premier League challenge as much as ever after scoring a later winner against Norwich City in his 900th game for the club.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men took the lead in the seventh minute through a Paul Scholes header, the champions then took their foot off the gas somewhat and allowed Grant Holt to pull the hosts level later in the game.

The Red Devils were saved by the man who has become a Manchurian, as he finished off a move in injury time to steal all three points.

The midfielder has now made 900 appearances for United, more than any player for any club, and the 38-year-old is still enjoying the game as well as already looking forward to next season.

He told MUTV: "To play 900 games for Manchester United is obviously something to be proud of.

"Especially growing up as a United fan.

"When you start off, you just set yourself little goals - to get into the team and obviously to stay in the team. Then you get a little bit greedy and want to win things, and then win more things. I don't think you ever envisage you're going to play that many games.

"I'm enjoying my football more than ever. The club want me to carry on so I want to carry on. I'm hungry and still want to play. I look forward to next season - hopefully after winning something this season."

The former Welsh international also used Scholes, who recently came out of retirement to make a return to Ferguson's side, as an example of why he is not ready to stop playing just yet.

"Seeing how much Scholesy missed it and seeing him now enjoying training and games, and playing so well, that is something I've got to think of as well," he added.

Sir Alex Ferguson believes David de Gea is beginning to demonstrate he possesses the ability to be Manchester United No.1 for many years to come.

The Premier League champions spent £18 million to secure the services of the 21-year-old goalkeeper from Atletico Madrid last summer following the retirement of veteran 'keeper Edwin van de Sar.

De Gea, however, endured a testing start to his Old Trafford career, and had seen himself demoted to the bench after a number of hapless displays.

The Spaniard is, though, growing in confidence with every passing game, and was voted man-of-the-match for his display in the victory against Norwich at Carrow Road on Sunday.

And, says Ferguson, this is continuation of the fine form De Gea has shown since the defeat against Liverpool in late January.

"He's being doing great the kid since that Liverpool game when he had a disappointing day but he's growing all the time and he proved today what a good goalkeeper he's going to be," said Ferguson, according to skysports.com.

"We always know he has the potential since his time at Atletico Madrid, but today that was another confirmation of how good he's going to be."

Ferguson's comments follow those of Manchester United defender Jonny Evans, who says De Gea is improving with every game he plays for the 19 time champions.

"From day one, David's shot stopping has been unbelievable," Evans told manutd.com.

"He pulls off saves that you can't believe. He just needs a bit of confidence and he seems to be getting that."

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has hit out at critics who believe the Northern Ireland international is struggling at club level, The Daily Mail reports.

The 24 year old was sent off in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford, where United were beaten 6-1 by a rampaging Manchester City. Evans is hopeful that the critics can look past the game against City and focus on his more recent run in the side, where he has featured regularly in both domestic and European football. Northern Ireland face Norway this week and Evans believes his return to the squad is a testimony to the talent and form he is showing.

Evans said: ‘I feel I have hit the ground running this season and I feel better than I ever have. I’m stronger and fitter and I believe my game has reflected that. I am also feeling in good shape ahead of Wednesday (against Norway). As for me, people will look back to the derby game against Manchester City and think my season hasn’t gone well, but I think I’m playing well.’

The defender has 28 caps for his country and appealed to Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill to utilise his strengths in central defence. Evans plays the majority of time at full-back for his country and wants to play in his strongest position of centre-back when Norway visit on Wednesday. The 24 year old also wants fans to forget his errors for Northern Ireland and focus on their bid to reach the 2014 World Cup.

Tom Cleverley is likely to return for United's Barclays Premier League clash against West Bromwich Albion while Anderson offers another midfield option to Sir Alex Ferguson.

Cleverley has been training this week and is in contention for a place after injuring his ankle in the home game against Ajax. Anderson came on in the 61st minute of the loss to Athletic Club as a replacement for Ji-sung Park after being out since the FA Cup victory at Manchester City.

"I think Tom will be involved," Sir Alex told MUTV's Countdown to Kick-off. "Obviously the problem when you have players out for such a long time is when you can get them back into the fray.

"For instance, Ando played for half an hour and it was a good half-hour for him as he'd not played for two months."

In updating the team news for Sunday, the manager also confirmed Chris Smalling could struggle to be fit in time after opening up a head wound on Thursday.

"We'll have to look at that issue and see what the problem is," he added. "I imagine he'll be doubtful for Sunday but I think everyone else is okay."

Dimitar Berbatov has admitted that not being regularly involved in the first-team for Manchester United has been "sad" and "painful".

The 31-year-old has only made 10 appearances in the Premier League so far this season, with half of those coming as a substitute. He has also played three times in both the Champions League and League Cup respectively.

The Bulgarian suggested that it is hard to take when he doesn't play but insisted that having a strong squad is important.

He told the United Review: "It's just about being ready.

"We have a big squad and you know sometimes you are not going to play.

"It's sad and it's painful but you need to be strong and be prepared for when your team-mates need your help. We are a team and we want to win together.''

In the 10 league games he has featured in, the forward has netted an impressive seven goals. The former Tottenham man believes he has shown Sir Alex Ferguson what he can do and it is just a case of waiting for his chance to help the side regain the Premier League trophy.

He added: "Every time I have played I think I have done well.

"I'm ready and waiting whenever the boss gives me a chance to show my quality and deliver. I want to do as much as I can to help us win the title.''

United are currently two points behind Manchester City, who sit at the top of the table, with the Red Devils set to face West Brom at Old Trafford on Sunday.

I feel sorry for him, but hopefully he will get more opportunities soon as the team is rotated.

United top of the league:devil:, we won WBA and City lost at Swansea. Us United fans cannot get complacent as there is still more games to come.

I thought Young, Welbeck, Scholes and Carrick all played well. Great to see Wayne Rooney continue his goalscoring form. Javier Hernandez had a frustrating time trying to score, although he contributed in link up play and is improving at that.

WBA gave it a good go, credit to them but DDG was not tested much and it went downhill for them once Olsson was sent off. I was convinced the Evra challenge on Odemwingie was going to be given as a penalty.

Defence coped much better and Evra was linking up forward with Young a lot and even got better at his defensive work.

Sky Sports understands teenage midfielder Paul Pogba has agreed to sign a new contract to stay at Manchester United.

Pogba's future at Old Trafford was uncertain as he was due to be out of contract at the end of the season and had been heavily linked with a move to Juventus.

The 18-year-old's situation was recently described as 'precarious' by his agent and speculation had suggested Pogba was set to leave United.

His omission from the squad for the recent Europa League home defeats by Ajax and Athletic Bilbao only prompted further doubts over his future.

However, Pogba was back in Sir Alex Ferguson's plans for Sunday's game against West Bromwich Albion and he appeared as a second-half substitute in the 2-0 win.

Speaking after the victory which sent United to the top of the Premier League table, Ferguson confirmed Pogba was still making up his mind regarding a contract.

It is now understood that Pogba has elected to continue his career with the reigning champions and has agreed terms with the club.

Pogba has made five substitute appearances for the Red Devils this season after making his debut against Leeds United in the Carling Cup.

Wayne Rooney wants to keep scoring more for Manchester United's sake, rather than the pursuit of any personal milestones or awards.

His manager Sir Alex Ferguson has cheekily set the in-form marksman a target of 40 goals for the current campaign after a match-winning double against West Brom took his tally to 26 so far. Rooney has nine goals in his last six matches in all competitions, while in the Barclays Premier League alone, only Arsenal's Robin van Persie has scored more - 25 to Wayne's 20.

The England striker admits his best-ever haul for a season - 34 goals in 2009/2010 - is in the back of his mind but insist his first thoughts are for the team and the pursuit of a record 20th title.

When told by MUTV that Sir Alex wants 40 goals out of him, Rooney replied: "I'm sure we all would! I'm playing well and scoring goals so I hope that continues to help the team.

"To be honest, I obviously know what my [previous best] tally is and how many goals I still need to score to reach it. But I'm not focusing on that at the minute. I'm focused on the 10 games left and hopefully getting those points to help us be successful. If it happens, then great but the most important thing is for us to be winning trophies."

Ashley Young added on the club's official TV channel: "He [Wayne] has done brilliantly this season and hopefully he goes on adding to his tally and we keep getting the three points."

The Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has confirmed he is on course for a return to action at the start of next season.

Vidic ruptured his cruciate ligament during December's Champions League defeat to Basel. The 30-year-old was immediately ruled out for the remainder of the campaign, and although there were suggestions he may be back sooner, in a webchat with the United website he said his target was pre-season training.

"My recovery is going well," he said. "Obviously the projection was I would be ready for the next season. I am on schedule and will hopefully start training again in July."

Vidic has been confined to gym work during the early weeks of his rehabilitation, although that will be stepped up as the months go on.

In the meantime, the Serb has been reduced to a watching brief as United compete for a record 20th Premier League title. Although Patrick Vieira has cast doubt on United's credentials, Vidic does not share his view.

He may be wary of saying any games are easier than others, but because of United's fixtures on the run-in he feels they deserve to be favourites. "I've had the belief from the beginning, and if you look at the schedule of the games we have left to play I would like to say we are the favourites," he said.

"We still have to win the nine games and need to be focused. We believed from the beginning and have the confidence but we have nine Champions League final games now I would say. It's all in our hands. We have to focus and give our best. All the players are ready to perform which is a good sign and a positive thing for the nine games ahead."

Vidic has been heartened by recent performances as United have opened up a four-point lead at the top of the table, ahead of Manchester City's key encounter with Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium this evening.

While he accepts Wayne Rooney's 20-goal contribution to United's league campaign has been crucial, Vidic feels Antonio Valencia has been the key man. "He's a great player to play with," he said. "First of all he's a team player who works hard for the team and makes a difference up front. He's done it so many times this season and it seems like he's made a step up and improved. I would say he is our best player this season.

"There are one or two others, like Wazza's had a great season and has scored a lot of goals. But Antonio has done really well. It's important he's fit and plays all the games because we need him at this time of the season."

Giggs ready for Rovers

Ryan Giggs believes Manchester United will face a fired-up Blackburn Rovers in Monday night's showdown at Ewood Park.

The Reds will be backed by a sizeable and vocal travelling army of fans but the larger-than-usual allocation of away tickets seems to have also inspired the home supporters in the past. United have won only two times in the last 11 league visits to the Lancashire ground, although the point secured last season clinched the 19th title.

"It’s always been a tough place to go for us," Giggs told ManUtd.com. "It’s like a mini-local derby. We always take good numbers there but that just seems to lift the Blackburn fans, who are always up for it.

"On a few occasions down the years we’ve not played very well there and we’ve had one or two players sent off at Ewood Park as well. It’s just been a tricky place to go, although we do have good memories of going there from last season when we won the league at Blackburn.

"It’s important we go there to try and get a good result but I don’t think this fixture will have the same sort of impact on the title race as it has in the last two seasons. There are still too many points at stake. Even if we lose at Blackburn, there will be another 21 points to be won. I can see it going right down to the wire."

bbfan1991

So Manchester City got a point after being 3-1 down at home to Sunderland, that is 2 points dropped for them but now United need to take advantage of the game in hand away at Blackburn on Monday and get the win to take us 5 points clear.

United play QPR then next week Sunday at Old Trafford and City have to go to the Emirates to play Arsenal, which will be another vital game.

Tom Cleverley is "as excited as everyone else" by the prospect of a title chase in his first full Barclays Premier League season as a United player.

In an exclusive interview for MUTV’s Countdown to Kick Off, Cleverley said of his bid to collect a first winner's medal: "That is what we’re at this club to do."

Meanwhile, two of Tom's fellow midfielders are already into double figures where titles are concerned - namely Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.

"It gives us, the young players, confidence when you know you have players with 15 to 20 years' experience playing next to you," Cleverley admitted.

After returning to the first-team fold as an unused substitute against Fulham, Tom hopes to feature in the final eight league games, starting at Blackburn on Monday. He recognises there is little margin for error, especially with the presence of local rivals Manchester City providing extra intensity in this title race.

"It does seem to increase the pressure a little bit with City being involved. But we know if we win every game from now until the end of the season, the title is ours."

Sir Alex Ferguson is refusing to take anything for granted even though Monday's trip to Blackburn marks the start of three games on the trot against sides mired in relegation trouble.

With QPR and Wigan to come over the Easter period, Manchester United look well placed to take maximum advantage of Manchester City's recent dip in form.

However, Ferguson will be acutely aware that all three sides have won two out of their last three matches.

And with the battle for points getting more intense, the United chief is determined there will be no complacency creeping into his squad.

'We know how quickly football can turn on you and bite you,' said Ferguson.

'You can look at all the fixtures and say all those teams are fighting for their lives. And they are the kind of games you know will be tight.'

Ewood Park has never been an easy place for United. Ferguson's team have emerged victorious on just two of their last 11 visits, a record that is worse that against any other north-west rival, including Liverpool and Manchester City.

Two seasons ago, United were held to a goalless draw that ultimately cost them any hope of retaining their title.

And even last year, when they only needed a point to get it back, the Red Devils required a late Wayne Rooney penalty to start the celebrations.

'The game at Blackburn has always been a difficult match,' said Ferguson. "It is a local derby and tends to be a bit feisty.

'Last season we were lucky enough to come back from a goal down to win the league.

'But it will be a very difficult game. That is the way it is going to be from now until the end of the season.'

With just one game a week now all their cup commitments are at an end, Ferguson has had some tricky selection posers to sort out on the club break at St Andrews.

Chris Smalling and former Blackburn defender Phil Jones will come into consideration for a recall at right-back and both would be on standby to replace Rio Ferdinand, should Ferguson not be entirely convinced the 33-year-old has recovered from the back complaint that reared its head again during Monday's narrow win over Fulham.

City manager Roberto Mancini has tried to apply some pressure by claiming United will drop points tomorrow to let his side back into the championship scrap.

However, such is the state of the Premier League table just now that if United avoid defeat on derby day at the Etihad Stadium on April 30, they could draw two games and still be crowned champions for a record 20th time. Not that Ferguson is looking that far ahead.

'Hopefully we can stay there but that's where the point is made about experience,' he said.

'We have a small advantage but we just have to take each game as it comes along.

'Once the Fulham game was over last week the focus was on Monday night. After that it will be Queens Park Rangers.

'That's the way we need to handle it. It's the best way.'

Sir Alex Ferguson claims David de Gea’s emergence as a key figure in Manchester United’s title bid can be traced back to being blamed for the New Year’s Eve defeat against Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford.

The Spanish goalkeeper is expected to overcome a wrist injury to face Steve Kean’s Blackburn Rovers team at Ewood Park tonight as United aim to claim the victory that will move them five points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table.

The 21 year-old, an £18.3 million summer signing from Atletico Madrid, endured an unconvincing start to life in England, making a series of costly mistakes before being dropped by Ferguson as a result of his error-strewn performance in the 3-2 defeat against Blackburn.

An ankle injury sustained by Anders Lindegaard saw De Gea recalled after just four games on the sidelines, however, and the youngster has since established himself as first-choice with a string of impressive displays.

And with De Gea set to face the team that brutally exposed his frailties at Old Trafford, Ferguson insists that the Spain Under-21 goalkeeper’s reaction since that defeat has justified his recruitment as Edwin van der Sar’s successor.

“David has stood up as a man.” Ferguson said.

“He got a grip of it, he didn’t let it get to him and the boy has improved every game. The area in which he had been criticised was aerial balls in the box and, if you watch the Blackburn game, the last corner-kick, he should have dealt with that.

“He knew that and he’s addressed that situation, so there’s a great improvement there. Now he’s playing with confidence and confidence is a great factor in English football.”

De Gea has conceded just two goals in his last five league games, keeping three clean sheets, but Ferguson admits he needed time to find his feet in the Premier League.

Ferguson said: “He stood up to the situation. He knew it was a challenge and it took him time to adjust to the different ways of the English game as opposed to the Spanish game. He’s showing that now.

“The other night against Fulham, he had two or three really terrific punches in the second half of the game when they started getting the ball in the box. He’s shown fantastic improvement.”

Although Manchester United sealed their 19th league title with a 1-1 draw at Blackburn last season, Ewood Park has proved an unrewarding venue for Ferguson’s team, with just two wins in their last 11 visits.

Rooney eyes top four finish

Wayne Rooney's priority for the remainder of the campaign is to help the Reds to a 20th title triumph, but the striker also has one eye on cementing a place in the top four of the club's all-time scorers list before the season's out.

Rooney, who has netted 28 times this term, is just four behind George Best and Dennis Viollet in the goals chart on 175.

Winning the league is Wazza's ultimate aim, but climbing the scoring ladder remains a personal goal.

"I’ve seen about the all-time scoring record and a few people have reminded me of it as well, but I’m still a long, long way away from Sir Bobby [Charlton, on 249 goals] and Denis Law [on 237]," the striker told Inside United.

"I’m obviously proud to be up there and be in touching distance of some legends of the club. Hopefully I can overtake them soon."

Rooney still has a long way to go before he can take over top spot from Sir Bobby Charlton who is sitting on 249, but it's a target he'd love to beat one day.

"It would be an unbelievable feeling if I could get his record, but as I said before I’m still a long way away. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to do it," added the 26-year-old.

"It’s not something I look at all the time, it’s something I’ll probably take more notice of when I’ve finished playing. But I’m certainly proud to be where I am at the moment."

Vidic had faith in United

Nemanja Vidic claims he knew United would still mount a serious defence of the title in his absence because the club never relies on one player.

When the influential captain was ruled out for the season after damaging knee ligaments at Basel in December, many commentators feared the Reds' campaign would falter but Sir Alex's team are five points clear in the Barclays Premier League table with seven games remaining.

Paying tribute to the younger players who have covered for the injured stars at vital times, the Serbian also feels the manager is is largely responsible for keeping the club in a position to challenge for the top domestic honour.

"It doesn't matter who is out," Vidic told PA Sport. "Manchester United never depend on one player. If you look at the past, players have left and fans have said how are we going to do but they still win titles and trophies.

"That is why Manchester United are special. That is why the manager is the best at replacing players and finding young players. He showed that over the years. I believed we would challenge for the title. We changed some players last season and others went.

"We got some young players. We didn't expect the young players would play that many games and would have so much influence on the team. This is a great plus for the club. Obviously we have had some injuries over the past year, which is another difficult thing we have gone through. We have had so many players get injured at different times. But we have coped and been very competitive with Manchester City. Now we are at the top of the league and have a big chance to win it."

In terms of the knee injury itself, Vidic is aiming to prove any doubters wrong by eventually regaining his best form.

"The injury happened," he stated. "I can't change it. It is not something I can change. I have to get on with it. Even when you have an injury, there are some benefits. You try to take the best you can from the position you are on. You don't think the worst.

"Of course I am not happy to be injured, but I am trying to work the best way I can. I know the stuff I am doing now will help me not to have the injury again. I am 30. I still have a few years to play. When I come back I want to be at the same level I was before my injury. This is one of the things that drives me on.

"People say I can't be the same. This is a challenge for me. It is a big injury, a long injury. I don't believe I will be on top form as soon as I come back. But I want to reach the level I was before the injury. This is the aim.

"I never thought about coming back. I am not pushing. I am lucky, the manager and the physios and the doctor weren't trying to beat the record. They didn't want me to come back in five months. Five months from the injury would be one game to the end. There would be no point rushing to play one or two games. That helps as well.

"I am looking to next season. As soon as I got the injury and had the operation, I knew I wouldn't be back this season. I am just focused on next season."

Manchester United's Antonio Valencia keen to prioritise playing for Ecuador by delaying ankle surgery .

Sir Alex on reported Valencia ankle op in summer:

"I don't know where that story has come from - it's never been on the agenda or discussed. He has a plate in there and at the moment it stays there. His form has been unbelievable. When you get players hitting form, their best form, at this time of season, it's a bonus."

Manchester United defender Phil Jones has admitted it is hard to think about anything other than the Premier League title race.

The Red Devils are five points clear at top of the table going into the Easter weekend fixtures, when they face struggling QPR, and look on course to pick up their 20th league title.

The 20-year-old Jones, who moved to Old Trafford from Blackburn last summer, is learning what it means to be in the thick of a title push.

"You can't get away from the title race," he told reporters.

"The hype is massive. You get to realise what it means to win and pick up that trophy every year. People are talking about it everywhere, which makes it hard to take your mind off it.

"It is great to be part of that though. It is an exciting time."

As one of the younger players in Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad, Jones admits it is the experience of United’s veterans that will see them triumph.

"The general knowledge of the experienced players, from just being there, knowing how to cope, what things to do on and off the field and how to prepare for games is invaluable," he added.

"You cannot buy that kind of experience."

Jones has shown his versatility, taking up a place in central midfield for their win at Blackburn on Monday, something he has done more than once this season, and he is desperate to win the league in his first season at Old Trafford.

"It would be a massive achievement for me, my family and my friends," he added.

"I would never have dreamed of being able to lift the Premier League trophy.

"But we are a long way off that yet."

Rio Ferdinand has warned his Manchester United team-mates that the Premier League title race is not over yet ahead of their clash against Queens Park Rangers at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Red Devils edged to narrow 2-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers on Monday night and moved five points clear of rivals Manchester City.

But Ferdinand insisted United are aware that there is more work to be done before they can celebrate United’s 20th league title.

“The celebrations [at Blackburn] were blown out of all proportion,” Ferdinand told United’s website.

“Since I have been at the club, for the last 10 years, it has been a hard place to go. We have not had good results there and we wanted to put that right and make sure we got a good result.

“We are in the position we would like to be in at this stage of the season but it is not over, and I don’t think it is a time that says we won the league.

“Those celebrations weren’t because we thought it was over, it was because we got a good result at a place where, a couple of years ago, they helped stop us winning the league. So it was nice to get one back over them.”

“There is still a lot of football to be played between now and the end of the season, when the trophies are handed out.

“We have to make sure we apply ourselves in the right way for every game. If we do that, put in the performances and get the results we want, we will hopefully be lifting the trophy at the end of the season.”

The England defender has won five league titles at Old Trafford since Sir Alex Ferguson signed Ferdinand from Leeds United in record £29.1m deal in 2002.

And the 33-year-old insists that United are aware of the twists and turns that can occur in a title run-in and is certain the defending champions will not be getting complacent, despite securing 31 points from a possible 33.

“We know it can change very quickly as well, from being on a great run to having a dip. We have been there before,” Ferdinand added.

“The only thing on our minds is to keep winning each game and not look beyond that. It is a cliché and it is boring, but that is the way it is. It is quite simple. Black and white.

“The next game is the most important one. You just have to keep ticking off the fixtures and winning games.”

He continued: “Everyone is saying our run-in looks easy, but our next three games [QPR, Wigan, Villa] are against teams who are fighting to stay in the Premier League, so this talk of easy games goes out of the window.

“We know QPR have some players who can be potential match winners and if we are not on our game, they have the potential to beat us.

“At this stage of the season there are no easy games. If we want the result, we will have to go out and earn it.”

Wayne Rooney admits the Battle of Manchester has got him as gripped as the rest of the nation.

The Manchester United striker is at the centre of one of the most exciting title races in Premier League history – and has revealed that he just can’t get it out of his mind.

Whether it’s scoring vital goals to keep Sir Alex Ferguson’s side ahead of their noisy neighbours – or watching City on TV, Rooney is hooked.

And despite already winning four titles and a Champions League trophy since joining United from Everton in 2004, the 26-year-old believes holding off the challenge from the Etihad Stadium would be one of the greatest achievements of his career.

“It’s on your mind all the time and you’re thinking about it every day,” said the England forward.

“The games usually come every three or four days at this time of the campaign so you’re always thinking about the next match and looking at the league table all the time.

“I watch pretty much every game that’s on, no matter who’s playing. If there’s a game on, I can’t not watch it.

“Watching games can be really frustrating, but when things go your way it’s a great feeling.

“The most important thing for us is to concentrate on ourselves and make sure we take care of our results, but of course it does give you a real boost when you see your rivals drop points.

“We just need to keep winning to ensure we take advantage of that if and when it happens.

“It’s the first time since I’ve been here and the first time for many years that United and City have been going head-to-head for the title.

“To win it would be great for the players, the fans and the club as a whole, and it would definitely be one of the best titles we’ve ever won.”

United have spent much of the season trying to hang onto City’s coat-tails after Roberto Mancini’s side made such an explosive start to the campaign – including that 6-1 win at Old Trafford.

But the title race has swung dramatically in United’s favour in recent weeks as City have managed a run of just one win in their last four Premier League games.

It has seen the champions build up a five-point lead at the top of the table following Monday’s 2-0 win at Blackburn.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That can be extended to eight with victory against QPR at Old Trafford on Sunday and Rooney is determined to pile the pressure on City as the season reaches a finale.

Rooney added: “You are coming to the part of the season where you know that there’s a big prize at the end of it,” he said.

“There is pressure in every game, but these are the matches that all footballers love playing in.

“You have to stay focused in every game and hope that, at the end of it, you do well enough to win trophies and medals.

“It’s probably more challenging than it’s ever been in the Premier League to win the title. You have to be at your best in every game.

“You can’t perform at 75 per cent of your capabilities and expect to win it. It’s a great challenge and one we’re all hungry to win.”

A record 20th title would be particularly impressive given the stage United are at in Ferguson’s rebuilding of his squad – as well as a series of injuries to key players this season.

Long-term absences of Nemanja Vidic, Tom Cleverley and Darren Fletcher have not been allowed to hamper United’s charge to the top of the table – even if they have disappointed in Europe.

Rooney’s outstanding form has been pivotal – hitting 29 goals in all competitions this season.

While United have been relentless domestically, elimination from both the Champions League and Europa League has been indicative of their inconsistency.

Rooney accepts they have not been at their brilliant best on occasions – but believes another title would be the perfect response to their critics.

“I think there have been games when we could have played better, but we’ve shown the spirit and the determination to grind out results when we’ve needed to,” he said.

“We’ve got a lot of quality players in the side and at times this season we’ve played great football and then at other times we haven’t played as well.

“But we still dug out results. If you look at the points tally for this stage of the season it’s probably one of the highest in United’s Premier League history.

“We won the league last season and are in a great position to do that again this year so we haven’t done too badly.

“We’re not really too concerned what people say as long as we keep winning games,” Rooney added.

Manchester United have won 10 of their past 11 league games and drawn the other, not only displaying the sort of precisely timed acceleration that defines champions but giving their rivals an object lesson in team unity and professional focus. While United have moved five points clear at the top of the Premier League, Manchester City have been one of the sides caught arguing among themselves, with disappointing results leading to signs of dissent on and off the pitch.

It could be argued that good results promote team harmony, and vice versa, though even in adversity, or the occasions such as Monday evening at Blackburn when the leaders had to wait 80 minutes for a breakthrough, squabbling among United players is rare.

"I wouldn't allow it," Sir Alex Ferguson says, speaking with all the authority of a manager who has faced down internal criticism from Roy Keane, Jaap Stam and others in his time. Even those cases tended to happen away from the pitch, in television studios or books. United players conspicuously fight for each other on the pitch, they do not turn on each other.

"There's a distinction to be made between having your say on the pitch, like Peter Schmeichel used to do when he bawled out his defenders, and squaring up to each other like the two players at Wolves did at the weekend," Ferguson says. "That can happen, particularly at the bottom of the league, because clubs who are struggling are under a lot of pressure and it is easy to understand players becoming frustrated. But really, if you don't have unity you are not playing as a team. The demeanour of a team is important, you can judge it by the way they celebrate a goal.

"We have a lot of experience in our team, and the knowledge of players like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand will be vital in the coming weeks, but we have also got young lads breaking into the side who are looking at those players and working out what they are doing right to have lasted so long. They are great examples for young players to learn from."

Ferdinand has performed so consistently in recent games that Ferguson believes he is due for an international recall. "If I were England manager I would take him to the Euros for his experience. He and John Terry are the only experienced central defenders England have got. All the rest are young, really. I don't think there are any experienced centre-backs to challenge them, but Rio has not been in the last few squads so it's a decision for the next England manager."

Ferdinand originally fell out of England favour because he missed so many United games through injury. Now he is back playing regularly and proving a convincing leader of the defence, Ferguson can see at least another season for a player whose career seemed to be drawing to a close.

"He should be OK for another season, he only turns 34 in November. We don't train him every day, we let him have the odd quiet day, as we call it. He has had to change his game as he got older because he used to rely on his pace and mobility such a lot. He was such a pure athlete, he could outrun anyone and he used to take advantage of that. He can't do that any more so he has had to improve his positioning and play a bit deeper.

"Experience is a vital part of his game now, he has done a lot to help Jonny Evans come on so well and he has helped David De Gea settle in. He has had a lot of responsibility with Nemanja Vidic being out, but his present form is his most consistent for a long time. In his younger days he would often make the odd mistake through casualness, he had that wee trait in him. Now you don't get any mistakes at all."

Manchester United 8 points clear now:), come on Arsenal beat Manchester City.

Penalty decision in 1st half was wrong because Ashley Young dived and before that he was already offside but the Referee/Officials did not flag him. Harsh on QPR to have Shaun Derry sent off too!

Performance was flat in the second despite United dominating most of the game, although QPR coped well overall and I was nervous until Paul Scholes scored that second goal:D.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has earmarked his squad's senior players as the most important in their push for a 20th league title.

United currently sit eight points clear of rivals Manchester City at the top of the Premier League following their controversial 2-0 win over Queens Park Rangers on Sunday.

However, Ferguson believes that his experienced players still need to play at the top of their game in order to secure the title.

"You have to protect your team as best you can. I think it's a good, strong squad with good youth and experience in it," said the veteran manager.

"Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick. Those five do represent a lot of experience and we expect them to be right on top of their job."

Interview with David De Gea in midweek after Wigan loss:

David De Gea says he is "really enjoying" his first experience of the Barclays Premier League title race and insists the players are determined to get back on track against Aston Villa.

The Reds' 1-0 defeat at Wigan, coupled with Manchester City's 4-0 win at West Brom, saw United's lead at the top cut from eight points to five with five games remaining.

City travel to Norwich on Saturday lunchtime with Sir Alex's men hosting Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday and De Gea is confident the Reds can bounce back from the surprise result at the DW Stadium.

"It was a disappointment on Wednesday but sometimes it can be a wake-up call just to remind us that anyone is capable of winning games in this league, against any opposition," the goalkeeper told ManUtd.com.

"We will be even more focused now going into these last five games, starting on Sunday, and carry on that battle for the title.

"I am really enjoying the title race and I'm happy we still have a five-point advantage over Manchester City.

"We know there is still a little way to go yet and there is still plenty of work to do. But we can't wait for each game. I want Sunday to come round as quickly as possible. We want to keep putting in the performances we have been and we are determined to keep fighting to keep that advantage."

Rafael da Silva has heaped praise on Manchester United midfielder Antonio Valencia – and he is confident their partnership can continue to blossom on the Red Devils’ right wing.

The 21-year-old defender and the Ecuadorian international have flourished together and helped United maintain their impressive form, with Ferguson’s side winning their last five games when the pair have started together.

“To be honest, I think it’s well recognised by everybody that Antonio has been one of my best friends at the club,” Rafael told MUTV.

“That’s not to disrespect anyone but I think we have created a very good understanding on the pitch.

“I can feel what he wants to do and vice versa and that is probably the reason why we have so much understanding on the pitch.

“I think it’s quite difficult to define Antonio’s qualities on the pitch. He’s quite fast and direct. He looks for the ball all the time.

“If I go forward, he covers me at the back and vice versa. It’s easy to work with him and, when I see him on the pitch, it leaves me more relaxed due to the understanding we have on the field.”

Rafael moved to Old Trafford from Fluminense in 2008, but the defender has only managed to nail down a regular spot in the United first-team in the second half of this season.

“Of course in a league like the Premier League, it’s important I play as many matches as possible,” he added.

“Although I wanted to play more, every match I play in I am keen to play even better. A player wants to play as many matches as possible and I want to play even more.

“I think the reason [behind his good form] is I’m probably getting a bit older and more mature.

“I see things in a different perspective. My aim is always to help the team, especially this season, to achieve the title we are after. So it’s probably due to being a bit more mature.”

David de Gea, the Manchester United goalkeeper, has praised supporters of the champions for providing the Spaniard with "extra motivation" during the Premier League run-in.

De Gea, who arrived United last summer following his £19-million transfer from Atlético Madrid, endured a nightmare start to his Old Trafford career, which reached its nadir with the ignominy of being dropped by manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 21 year-old, though, has since produced a string of decent performances which has led to him being mentioned amongst the candidates to be crowned player of the year by the club's fans.

"It is nice to know supporters are voting me," said De Gea.

"It is always a positive when the fans are behind you. It is something I can sense when I am on the field and makes me feel more relaxed.

"It is a source of extra motivation when you know the fans are right behind you and rooting for you.

"But all that aside, it is just a case of getting your head down, keep working hard and making sure you do have a continuous improvement all the time."

Jonny Evans, the United defender, has suggested De Gea's inability to speak English was a positive in those early days.

"Before I came, people back home were saying the weather in England is terrible and the food is not much better," he said.

"But I am quite a happy, easy-going kind of guy who likes to have a joke around and, to be totally honest, I like the food, the weather has not been so bad either and I am trying to pick up as much English as I can so I can take part in the dressing room banter."

In addition, De Gea has been pushing himself in the weights room, trying to add the additional muscle required in a Premier League goalkeeper.

"People are aware I have been trying to gain a little bit of weight in terms of muscle, maybe an odd kilo to bulk up a little bit," he said.

"But football-wise, there are not too many differences. The concentration levels are certainly the same, you can't let them drop for an instant."

Sir Bobby Charlton has commended the work Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson during his 25-year period at the club, claiming he has been central to the club's title challenge this season.

The Scottish manager has had to pit his wits against the extreme wealth of rivals Manchester City, but the former Red Devils' midfielder feels the services of the “marvellous” Sir Alex are priceless.

Charlton admitted that a lot of credit has to go to the manager for this season's efforts but also conceded that he has run out of superlatives to describe the man who has won 37 trophies during his time at the club.

"So much credit has to go to Alex and his coaches for having United involved in the title race again this season," Charlton told United Review.

"At the start of every campaign you want to avoid injuries and suspensions, and United have had such incredible misfortune with injuries that it's really staggering to be in the position we're in.

"There's been so much said about Alex - especially this season, with him passing his 25th anniversary with the club - that it's hard to add anything new. He's just marvellous, and the way he lifts everyone around him is incredible.

"The best example of that is in the reaction to City's 6-1 win at Old Trafford earlier this season. It shocked everybody associated with the club and it's certainly something you hope will never happen again.

"There's a part of you that would like to set the record straight with a similar win one day. But to come back from that result so strongly speaks volumes for how influential he is."

The season's title race draws many comparisons to the last time Manchester City won the league in 1968, a year in which Charlton was playing.

Although he admitted the pain of losing to their rivals was hard to take, he claimed that winning the European Cup in the same season eased his woes.

"City hadn't won the league for a long time and they were so keen to win it back," he remembered.

"They performed really well to take the title from us on the final day of the season, and I have to say they deserved to win it. It really was a great performance.

"I remember, though, going to a function with Mike Summerbee a few days after we'd won the European Cup at Wembley – three weeks after City had won the league - and Mike was half-laughing when he said: 'You always find a way to beat us, don't you?'

"The European Cup was the most important trophy you could win, and it meant so much for us to win it that it was all anybody was talking about. Unfortunately for City, it overshadowed their achievement so soon after they'd done it."

Sir Bobby the legend spot on!:worship:

The club's chief executive, speaking on a visit of various local projects that formed part of the Manchester United Foundation's Impact Report, is obviously hoping Sir Alex's side hold their nerve in the title run-in before conducting any business regarding transfers and new contracts during the close season.

In an exclusive interview with ManUtd.com, Gill was asked if he would have settled for the current position of chasing a 13th title in 20 years when the Barclays Premier League commenced. "I think we all would," he replied. "It's been an amazing run and it's going to be a tense end to the season. If we do it, it will be fantastic.

"This time of year's not good [for the nerves]. You do get tense but we've done very well and are in good shape now - five points ahead with four games to go. It's going to be tight but it's been wonderful."

When quizzed on whether it will be another busy summer in terms of any deals and contracts, he stressed: "We're looking at all that. The work goes on all year round but obviously intensifies as we come to the end of the season in terms of players.

"There's various contracts we've got to do, we'll look at some acquisitions and there will be some players who will leave. It's an interesting time."

Manchester United stay top of the Forbes rich list for the eighth year running, but second-placed Real Madrid have gained ground again.

United are also comfortably ranked as the most valuable team in any sport. Their worth of £1.4bn is £240m more than baseball's New York Yankees and the NFL's Dallas Cowboys.

Arsenal have fallen to fourth on the list, worth £800m, behind Real Madrid £1.17bn and Barcelona £1.07bn but marginally ahead of Bayern Munich who are worth £766m.

The Forbes list puts Chelsea in seventh place, worth £474m, and Liverpool eighth with a value of £386m.

United's huge global fan base, estimated by Forbes to number 330million, has helped maintain the club's position at the top. But Real Madrid and Barcelona have higher revenues than United, due in part to the fact they have negotiated their own individual television deals for Spanish football.

The figures are also based on last year's financial results, and reflect United reaching the Champions League final. Yet this year, United were dumped out of the competition in the group stages, and their income from European football is likely to suffer a corresponding drop.

Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona on the other hand, have reached the semi-final stage of the Champions League this year, meaning their revenue will stay at a similar level.

Tottenham are 11th on the list, valued at £351m, and Manchester City have climbed from 15th to 13th, worth £276m

For the last two weekends, Young has received severe criticism for going down far too easily to earn his side penalties.

United legend Bryan Robson has warned the former Aston Villa man that it may come back to haunt him as referees may be reluctant to award him spot-kicks in the future.

Young has also faced criticism from United fans with fanzine Red Issue laying into the winger for 'his latest disgraceful dive’, adding that ‘diving is cheating’ and is a betrayal of the code of conduct instilled at the club by Matt Busby.

Ferguson, however, confirmed this morning that he has spoken to the winger about the situation. "I have had a word with Ashley," said Ferguson.

"He understands where we are coming from. Hopefully it makes a difference."

After watching this week's Champions League semi-finals, Ferguson feels we are in an era where anything goes.

"Last week, if the player doesn't bring Ashley down he is going to score," said Ferguson. "It was a clear goalscoring opportunity.

"He caught him and he did overdo the attempt to get a penalty. I am not sure he tried to get the penalty but he certainly went down quickly.

"But people have reacted because it is Manchester United. I watched Real Madrid and Bayern Munich the other night and it was absolutely ridiculous, players were diving and rolling about, nothing like what Young has been accused of.

"Then you see the other night in the Chelsea game, we are in an age where you expect it now."

Ferguson continues to insist such decisions even themselves out.

"We didn't get one against Wigan during the week. We didn't scream from the rooftops about it. It happens," he said.

"We got one given against us for Newcastle, we didn't scream about that either. You get bad decisions and good ones. Believe me, it does even itself out."

Ferguson, who is preparing his side for Sunday's Premier League contest with Everton, also confirmed that Anderson and Paul Pogba have been ruled out for the rest of the season through injury.

In truth, neither man was expected to play a significant role over the next four games.

Michael Owen, however, could be involved in the season run-in. The striker has returned to training and could play some part, if not against Everton at Old Trafford, then the following games against Manchester City, Swansea and Sunderland.

"I have said time and time again that Michael is a player who can score important goals if you are struggling in a match," said Ferguson.

"He has had a hard time with injuries. When he gets them it is usually months."

Sunday's game marks another appearance for Wayne Rooney against his old club.

Rooney only requires one more goal to equal George Best and Dennis Viollet in the all-time United scoring charts, that pair reaching 176.

However, Ferguson sees no reason why Rooney cannot overtake the club record of 249 currently held by Sir Bobby Charlton.

"He has every chance of beating that - I am sure he will do it," said Ferguson.

Sir Alex Ferguson hopes Paul Pogba will make the right decision for his career and stay at Manchester United after the club agreed a new deal with his agent.

The Reds' boss revealed on MUTV's Countdown to Kick-Off on Friday that United had reached agreement about a new contract for the midfielder, but said the player himself has still to decide whether or not to sign it.

"We've agreed a deal with his agent. It's now down to the boy," Sir Alex told MUTV.

"I must stress, he's going to be a first-team player. There's no doubt about that.

"The boy has great potential and I think he's at the right club. But he has to make that decision."

The 19-year-old, who helped the Reserves clinch the Barclays Premier Reserve League North title on Monday night, has certainly impressed in his seven senior appearances this season - all as a substitute.

Unfortunately though, we're unlikely to see him in action again this season after he suffered ankle ligament damage in United's stunning 6-3 comeback at Newcastle that sealed the title crown.

Wayne Rooney feels team-mate Ashley Young has endured rough treatment from the press merely because he plays for Manchester United.

The Reds winger has been branded a diver in some quarters after being involved in two contentious penalty decisions in the past fortnight.

"I think that whenever anything happens with any United players it gets more press than players from other teams," Rooney told MUTV.

"It's difficult for forwards. At times you are trying to get out of the way of getting kicked and people just think you've dived.

"Obviously no one likes to see [diving] in the game, but the game is so quick these days it's difficult for referees to get some of these decisions right."

Rooney, who was nominated this week for the PFA Player of the Year award, admits United, five points clear with four games to play, are in pole position in the title race.

"It's a great position to be in," he said. "Especially after City went a few points ahead of us and we had to keep fighting to stay in touch with them.

"We have to make sure we do our job right from now until the end of the season and to retain the title."

Will Keane has been praised by Sir Alex Ferguson ahead of a potential loan move next season.

The Reserves' top scorer hit four goals in the recent 6-3 win at Newcastle to take his tally for the domestic campaign to 16 and he's already had a brief taste of first-team action in the New Year's Eve defeat to Blackburn.

Keane has ploughed a lone furrow in attack for Warren Joyce's champions following the departure of Mame Biram Diouf and loan exit for Federico Macheda and is continuing to learn his trade.

"Will's progressing the right way," the manager told MUTV's Countdown to Kick-Off. "He's a good finisher, the lad. I think he just needs a bit of toughening up. Next year, we'll possibly send him out on loan. He's got good potential."

Sir Alex is proud of Joyce's side for clinching their Northern title with games to spare and acclaimed the coach's decision to move Ritchie De Laet into attack at Newcastle.

“Unbelievable!" he exclaimed. "Warren Joyce is a tactical genius. Down 3-0 and he shoves De Laet up front and they win 6-3. I couldn't believe it. I don't know how they were 3-0 down but they recovered and they've won the league and won it well. Congratulations to Warren and all the lads. They've done well."

Reds defender Jonny Evans says the standard of football in the Premier League is higher than ever.

United could finish the season on 94 points, the club's biggest tally since the Premier League began, and yet the team have come under plenty of fire for supposed sub-par performances.

"The bar has been raised again," Evans insists. "Chelsea did it a few years ago.

"Whenever there is an out-and-out challenger the other teams have to be better than they had been before. People keep saying it is a great achievement for this team [to be where we are] but if you look at our record it speaks for itself.

"People say we have not been playing well but some of the football we have played at home has been outstanding. You can't always play well away from home but we have gone away and ground out results."

Victories in United's next two games - at home to Everton and away at Manchester City - would clinch a record-extending 20th title for Sir Alex's men. Not that Jonny's allowing himself to think too far ahead, mind you.

"It would be nice to think we can almost touch another winners' medal but we can't think about that yet," he insisted. "It can change in just a couple of days.

"Five points sounds a lot but it isn't when you think about it. We have to concentrate on getting over the Everton game first and still being five points clear when we play Manchester City.

"A Manchester derby is a massive game, whether a Premier League title is at stake or not.

against your local rivals. They beat us at our place earlier this season so no matter what was on the game we would want to win it."

Despite United's upper hand in the title race, Evans insists City's players won't have given up hope of catching the Reds.

"Although there are only four games left their lead over us changed pretty quickly so it can happen the other way. We're just concentrating on making sure we get the three points and tick the next game off as it comes along."

First on the list is Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday 22 April. And although the Toffees came unstuck in last weekend's FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, they're a side who have enjoyed some good recent results.

"Everton always seem to be slow starters but they have hit a great patch of form in the second half of the season," Evans said. "They are above their local rivals Liverpool so I am sure they will want to finish above them in the league after losing to them in the FA Cup semi-final.

"Getting to the semi-final shows how good a team they are. It is going to be another tough game. It is a game where we will have to be patient because they do defend quite well."

Rio Ferdinand says the return of Paul Scholes has been key in Manchester United's push for a 20th league title and wants the 37-year-old to play on past the summer.

Scholes shocked everyone when he came out of retirement on the day the Reds last travelled to City - for an FA Cup third round tie in January - and now, ahead of a match widely agreed to be the most important derby of all time, Ferdinand has heaped praise on the pass master.

"There are a number of reasons why we’ve done well since the turn of the year," he told United's official matchday programme, United Review. "There’s no doubt one of them is Paul Scholes. Would we have been in the same position [without him]? It’s impossible to say. It’s great to have him back, though.

"It’s not just the quality of his football that impresses me but the way he’s adapted physically. He was out of the game for months and yet he’s come straight back into top-level football and he’s hardly looked out of place. At this stage of his career, that’s phenomenal."

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed last weekend he has not spoken with Scholes about the possibility of continuing into the 2012/13 season, for fear of clouding the midfielder's mind with issues that are secondary to the team's current focus of winning the league.

"I'm not going to ask him until the end of the season," Sir Alex said. "I don't want to put anything in his mind at all.

"It was a break for us to get Paul back. The form he’s showing now is as good as it’s ever been.

“He brings a calmness to the game and he can dictate the tempo of matches for us. He’s been doing that since he’s come back. He’s probably in better form than he was last season, because when he made his decision to retire it would have been in his mind that it was his last season and maybe it did affect him."

Ferdinand, however, was vocal in his desire to see Scholes pull on the United shirt for a 19th campaign.

"Definitely. It would be nice if he could play another season. With Scholesy, though, you know it doesn’t make a difference what anybody else says. He’s his own man and he’ll make his own decision."

Sir Alex Ferguson has pledged that Manchester United will be going for victory in Monday's derby - even though a draw will also be a fabulous result in the context of the title race.

The manager wants his players to make amends for conceding a 4-2 lead against Everton last weekend and putting the Old Trafford spectators through the mill. With so much experience in his line-up, he's backing the Reds to take a major step towards a 20th title.

"I suppose when the fixture came out, it all pointed to this game," said the boss. "There was an inevitability to it. But we are where we are. Now it's all down to this game. It will be a fantastic atmosphere.

"We're smarting from the four goals we gave away last week. We tend to make it hard for ourselves. We subject our supporters to that sort of drama. For years and years, it's been like that. Hopefully, we'll make amends on Monday."

Roberto Mancini's attempts to claim United are firmly in the driving seat and his City side only have a small chance of glory do not wash with the vastly-experienced Reds manager.

"Roberto wants to take the pressure off his own players," Sir Alex insisted. "It won't affect our approach our attitude to the game. We know the situation we're in.

"We're in a better position than Manchester City. We could come out with two results, whereas they have to win. Although you know this club's attitude - we'll be trying to win.

"I think there's enough experience. Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand, even Wayne Rooney. Michael Carrick as well. There's enough experience to cope with this situation.

"I think the previous encounters this season are irrelevant. We've already met three times but the past is the past. It doesn't matter. It's all down to Monday.

"I don't know if you thrive in this sort of situation. I don't know if I'm looking forward to it, but I'm up for it. I'm prepared for it and I think the players are prepared for it."

Evans' biggest year

Nine months is a long time in football.

Last summer, Jonny Evans admitted that if he played like he did in 2010/11 he probably wouldn't be at Old Trafford much longer. Now he's one of the first names on Sir Alex Ferguson's teamsheet.

Indeed, since Nemanja Vidic's season-ending injury in early December, Evans has started all but two of United's Barclays Premier League fixtures - the Reds lost both - and is a leading candidate for United's Player of the Year award.

"Maybe I was too honest and shouldn't have said that!" the Northern Irishman says, chuckling when reminded of his comments last summer. "But that was an honest opinion of myself, I guess.

"Every player goes through that. It was up to me to find a way to get through it. It was a challenge for me and everybody needs to be challenged. You either rise to it or you don't, and if you don't then you don't deserve to be at a club like Manchester United.

"Those are the sorts of challenges everybody here faces - when that happens it's up to you to try and raise your game and get back into the team."

That's never an easy task when two of the world's best defenders - Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic - are ahead of you in the pecking order. But Evans displayed improved form in the first three months of the season and then, when Vidic suffered cruciate knee ligament damage in United's final Champions League group-stage game, stepped into the side and grabbed his chance.

Now, with three games left to play this term, he's already amassed his highest season appearance

tally (39) with the Reds. By the end of 2011/12, it's likely Evans will have turned out more times for United than Jaap Stam, Joe Jordan and Quinton Fortune ever did.

"When I came back from being on loan at Sunderland [in 2007/08] I never thought I'd go on to play more than 30 games in my first season at United. That was crazy.

"And I don't think about how many games I might end up playing. My aim is always to just get into the next team and then play well.

"I've been here about four years and I've played 120-odd games - that's about 30 a season. Hopefully I can add a few more to that next year."

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney last week offered the first glimpses of an attacking partnership that could be compared to some of the best Manchester United have ever had.

Dwight Yorke's devastating tandem with Andy Cole during United's 1999 Treble-winning campaign is regarded as the most potent of the Ferguson era. Between them, Yorke and Cole plundered 53 goals and both found the net in that famous Champions League semi-final victory over Juventus in Turin when United recovered from two-nil down.

United have not found a better combination since, and Ferguson said: "Last week we saw something really special. I know there was a lot of reference to the Yorke and Cole thing. There were similarities to that. Wayne is 26 now. Danny is 21. For the next few years they can only get better. We certainly hope so."

Welbeck has made such rapid progress this season he has ousted Javier Hernandez from the striking slot he won off record signing Dimitar Berbatov last season. The Longsight-born striker scored his 12th goal of the campaign in Sunday's remarkable 4-4 draw with Everton, when Rooney's double took him to 33 for the season.

With four England caps already and a new contract about to be signed, Welbeck is clearly a talent Ferguson is keen to nurture, and the United boss added: "Danny's movement was fantastic. Now he is fit again and playing consistently, he has developed better."

Welbeck's emergence is yet another example of United investing in youth, either their own or, as with David de Gea and Phil Jones last summer, through the transfer market.

Ferguson tends to be ridiculed for his repeated assertion there is no value in the transfer market, with many believing it is merely a front for a lack of funds being made available by the Glazer family. It is an allegation Ferguson and chief executive David Gill both deny.

And, with Manchester City spending big, along with both Chelsea and Liverpool in recent times, the policy is set to continue.

"It is hard to change our way of doing things," said Ferguson. "After the spell of domination, when we won the Treble and following that we had big point margins there was a transitional period.

"We tried to rebuild a team with young players, like Rooney and (Cristiano) Ronaldo and one or two of our own young players were starting to come through. I think we will probably stick to what we are doing."

Giggs: We're ready to deliver

Ryan Giggs admits the Reds are “frustrated” at having let their advantage over Manchester City slip, but are determined to ensure they leave the Etihad on Monday night with the title still very much in their grasp.

Just over two weeks ago Sir Alex’s men were eight points clear of the Blues, but a change in fortunes for both clubs has seen the lead reduced to just three points. A win or a draw for United would ensure our title hopes remain in our hands, but victory for City would hand them the initiative because of their superior goal difference. Giggs, a veteran of 35 Manchester derbies, insists the players are well aware of what’s at stake and know they must perform to their best.

“We’re looking forward to the game more than anything,” he told ManUtd.com. “It’s been a long week building up to it and as a player you just want to get out onto that pitch and perform. We just can’t wait for Monday night to come.

“We’re under no illusions that it’s a tough game but it’ll be a tough game for City as well. They will be looking at it and fancying themselves to win just like ourselves because they’re a good team and they’re at home. But we’re Man United, we’re the champions and we’ll be trying to put a statement out that shows we deserve to win this league.”

Sir Alex has labelled the clash the “biggest derby in my time” and Giggs agrees that given its timing in the season and the positions both teams are in, there has never been another more important. But he says it’s vital the Reds do their utmost to block out the ever-increasing hype.

"We realise it’s a big game but as a United player you're used to that,” he added. “You’ve got to block out the hype and what’s being said – that’s been going on all through the season. One day people say City are going to win the title and then it’s United… we’re used to that. I must admit it’s hard to block it out, but you’ve got to try and be professional and not let emotions get the better of you. Your job is to train well and be ready to go out there and perform when Monday comes.”

While a point would be good enough for United to stay in control at the Barclays Premier League summit, Giggs maintains that the Reds will not simply be going there to defend.

“We’ve got to go out there and try and win,” says the 38-year-old. “Obviously if there’s a few minutes to go and it’s all square we won’t be pushing six or seven players forward and we’ll probably try and get the draw! [Laughs]. But we’ve got to go and try to win it because if we just try to defend against a very good team we might come unstuck.

“We’re the two best teams [in the league], there’s no doubt about that,” he continues. “We’ve been the two most consistent teams over the season. The likes of Tottenham and Chelsea have fallen by the wayside but we’ve carried on going. City were on fire before Christmas and we were just trying to hang on really. We managed to do that and we’ve come into form in the second half of the season. But it’s come down to this now… we’re neck and neck and it’s about whoever puts in the performance on Monday night.”

Phil Jones has been surprised at the number of appearances he has made for Manchester United in his first season at Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson splashed out £18million to sign Jones from Blackburn last summer.

As a raw teenager, it was envisaged United would ease the Chorley-born player in gradually.

However, partly through the energy of his early performances, partly through his ability to operate in a variety of positions and with Nemanja Vidic's season ending early due to a knee injury, Jones has been thrown in at the deep end.

Sunday's win over Swansea represented his 40th appearance of the campaign in all competitions, a figure Jones finds it difficult to believe he has reached.

"It has gone really well," he said.

"If anyone had told me at the start of the season I would have made 40 appearances for Manchester United I would have snapped their hands off. It is incredible.

"I didn't expect it this season but it all started off really well.

"Perhaps I picked up a few injuries at the wrong time because at the back end of the season I couldn't really get my match fitness back.

"But now I feel good, fit and fresh and hopefully I can finish the season strongly."

Barring an unexpected turn of events in Manchester City's match against QPR next Sunday, Jones will end the campaign with a Barclays Premier League runners-up medal

Yet few who have watched Jones closely this term, particularly in the middle portion of the season when he was earning comparisons with legendary United star Duncan Edwards, doubt he is destined for the very top of the game.

Sam Allardyce knew it when he handed Jones his Blackburn debut two years ago, and asked him to mark Didier Drogba.

That he managed it was an indicator of the 20-year-old's laidback attitude, which ensured he was not overawed for long when he first wandered into United's dressing room.

"There is definitely a bit of personal intimidation," he said.

"You always raise the question to yourself. Am I good enough to be here?

"The manager has shown that faith in me. Hopefully I have repaid it.

"I found it relatively easy to adjust though, because at Blackburn I always saw myself as a player who likes to get the ball down, which is what United love to do."

Prior to Fabio Capello's surprise resignation in February it seemed Jones was a certainty to feature in England's Euro 2012 squad.

Now, with Roy Hodgson in charge and Jones' form taking a dip, it is not quite so certain.

However, the certain consolation prize would be an Olympics berth, so the youngster knows, one way or another, he is in for a busy summer.

"There are two massive competitions coming up at the end of the season," he said.

"Hopefully I can be part of one of them."

Ryan Giggs gets Team GB go ahead from Manchester United

Manchester United have given Ryan Giggs the go-ahead to play for Team GB at the Olympics but will not allow any of their other over-age players to do so.

The ex-Wales captain is believed to be on a shortlist of 80 for Team GB.

It is understood United have contacted the Football Association to say coach Stuart Pearce cannot select their over-age players, apart from Giggs.

The FA say they subsequently informed the club that Giggs was the only over-age United player being considered.

United have also said that Mexican striker Javier Hernandez will not play at the London Olympics.

Hernandez had initially been selected as one of Mexico's three over-age players for the tournament but Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson said the striker needed to rest.

And the club have ruled out Team GB coach Pearce picking Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes and Jonny Evans for the Olympic tournament at London 2012 as over-23 players.

A 2008 Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling states clubs have the right to refuse to release players for the competition as it is not on the international calendar, but United are only taking that position on their over-age players.

Tom Cleverley, Danny Welbeck, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling could be part of the Olympic squad if they are not picked for the England Euro 2012 squad.

Giggs won 64 caps for Wales between 1991 and 2007 but never played in a major international tournament.

The 38-year-old has previously indicated he would accept an invitation so long as the Football Association of Wales did not oppose him doing so.

The FAW fear Team GB could threaten their independence and, although they oppose Welsh internationals featuring at the Olympics, they have said they will not stop them from taking part.

Sir Alex gracious in title defeat

Sir Alex Ferguson congratulated Manchester City after they pipped Manchester United to the Barclays Premier League title on a dramatic final day of the season.

The Reds won 1-0 at Sunderland thanks to Wayne Rooney’s first-half header but lost the title on goal difference as Roberto Mancini's men came from behind to beat ten-man QPR 3-2 courtesy of two stoppage-time goals by Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero. Gracious in defeat, Sir Alex doffed his cap to the local rivals and praised his own team for a professional job in spite of immense pressure and distraction from the Etihad Stadium.

“I would like to say on behalf of Manchester United, congratulations to our neighbours,” Sir Alex said. “It is a fantastic achievement to win the Premier League, it’s not easy to win, it’s the hardest league in the world and anyone that wins it deserves it.

“We knew there were five minutes of injury time being played there, one of our assistant referees informed us of that. Our game only had three [added] minutes so for two minutes [after our final whistle] we didn’t know that was happening. Of course, they got the break and won the game.

“It was a cruel way but we’ve experienced many ups and downs in the 25 years that I’ve been here and most of them have been great moments. We have won the league three times in the last five seasons and we nearly did it again today.

“All we had to do, I said it before the game to the lads, was concentrate on our job because you are going to get certain types of reaction from the fans - you saw that from our fans and from Sunderland’s when City scored a third goal. You just have to put that to one side and concentrate on your own game, which I think we did pretty well.”

Not one to panic, Sir Alex says the future looks bright for United after his young squad pushed Manchester City to the final minute of the season, despite suffering a plethora of injuries to key areas of the team throughout the campaign.

“We take great credit from the fact that we have had so many injuries this season and we’ve coped with that very well. They are only young players, it was excellent for them.

“They’ve experienced what has happened today and they’ll be around in five, six, seven or ten years time for Manchester United. The experience is good for them, even if it is a bad one.”

Boss: We deserve great credit

Sir Alex insists United can take “great credit” in the 2011/12 season, despite falling at the final hurdle and in heartbreaking fashion.

The Reds were just minutes away from clinching an unlikely 20th league title... until two injury-time goals at the Etihad Stadium sealed the championship for Manchester City.

Celebrations turned to shock at the Stadium of Light, where United fans had just watched the Reds beat Sunderland 1-0 thanks to a first-half Wayne Rooney goal.

The result meant United finished the season on 89 points and lost the league only on goal difference.

“I think we can take great credit,” Sir Alex told MUTV. “We’ve had to contend with a lot of injuries this season so I’ve had to change the team around a lot. That didn’t always help us.

“I have absolutely no recriminations about our season at all. Yes, there were times we can look back and say we’ve done this wrong or we’ve done that wrong, but 89 points would have won the league in most seasons.

“At the start of the season I said 82 points would probably win it. And we’ve gone seven points ahead of that. It doesn’t matter, though. We’ve lost the league. There’s nothing we can do about it.

“We congratulate Manchester City. Anyone who wins the league deserves to win it because it’s a very difficult league to win.”

The boss, magnanimous in defeat, took a number of positives from United’s final game of the season and said his players – particularly the younger ones – would learn a lot from the experience.

“They’re a good bunch of lads,” he said. “The younger players will remember today. Sometimes a bad experience is even better for you.

“When you have a good character and a certain purpose about you then you shouldn’t fear the future.

“We did our best today and but for their goalkeeper we could have scored seven goals. We hit the post, the bar, their goalkeeper made some fantastic saves. We conducted ourselves in the right way. It was a good level of performance.

“Well done to the players: Sunderland’s not an easy place to come to. They’re very committed, as you expect from a Martin O’Neill team. We came out with a lot of credit.

“For us it’s a challenge and we’re good at challenges. We’ll kick on from here.”

Ferdinand: We'll bounce back

Rio Ferdinand is adamant Manchester United will return next season to reclaim the Barclays Premier League title.

Despite his obvious disappointment at losing the league to Manchester City in such dramatic fashion, the United defender fronted up to Sky Sports at the final whistle to offer his congratulations to the Blues... and issue a warning to Roberto Mancini's men.

"It's a cruel way to have lost it," he said. "But you have to congratulate the other team. Any team that wins it obviously deserves it and they have played well throughout the season. It's now about us dusting ourselves down and winning the title back next season.

"This year we've had to use our squad to the maximum and that bodes well for the future. That's one positive we can take from this. I don't think any other team could have coped the way we have."

There was drama in Sunderland at the final whistle as United players ended the game in a position to lift the trophy. Seconds later, however, Sergio Aguero's goal at the Etihad Stadium secured a dramatic victory for Manchester City and, more significantly, their first Premier League title.

"I got the word during the game that City had scored to make it 2-2," Rio said. "Then, after our game finished, it went flat and silent, with everyone waiting. The cheers from the home supporters let us know City had scored and the title had gone to them. It's disappointing."

Evra: Room for improvement

Manchester United stand-in skipper Patrice Evra admits the Reds need to improve next season, although is adamant there is no need for a mass overhaul of Sir Alex’s squad.

United lost the league title to neighbours City on goal difference, a shift in power in Manchester that has prompted some to suggest major personnel changes are required at Old Trafford.

But Evra insists there’s no need for kneejerk reactions... and trusts the manager to make the right decisions in the transfer market.

“We always need to improve,” he said. “I'm not crazy. Every player has to be better next season than we were this season, even if we haven't been as poor as a lot of people are saying. And yes, fans will want to see a few new players.

“But that's not my job. I trust totally in the boss. He'll do the right thing. There aren't many players who can play for Manchester United. It's not easy. But transfers are not my job. If we need players, the boss will make the best decision.

“What we have to do - the players who are already here - is try and improve and realise that it is always a privilege to play for Manchester United. We will make sure we work hard in pre-season and ensure we're ready for the next challenge.

"We killed ourselves this season when we were eight points clear with six points to go. To be winning 4-2 against Everton and then, in the last six minutes, end up with a draw at Old Trafford... I thought something like that wasn't possible.”

In the end, United took City right to the edge - to the final minutes of the season, in fact - before ultimately falling at the final hurdle.

And while Patrice admits there is only scant consolation in finishing second on goal difference rather than by 20 points - after all, it's still second - he says he’s proud of how the Reds kept pace with Roberto Mancini’s men during a season that was plagued by injuries and illness.

“Because we play for Manchester United, people will say we've had the worst season ever,” he said.

“But this is not the truth. This is not the reality. The season we've just finished has been a miracle.

“I don't want to try and find excuses, but I think it's a miracle we're still there at the top when you consider the problems we've had.

“Take Vincent Kompany out of Manchester City for most of the season and I want to see if they are still top of the league. That's what we've had to deal with in Nemanja Vidic.

"We've also lost a player like Darren Fletcher and Anderson as well. I had to play at centre-back against Wigan Athletic with Michael Carrick. Those are all facts.

“Still, after all that, we're nine points better than last season, so we've done well. You have to give credit to City for doing even better.”

Ultimately, though, it’s the lofty standards Manchester United have set in the past that dictate how harshly the Reds are now judged.

“People will say bad things about United and we accept that - they say that because they want to see United win every year. Even with myself I feel like I've done poorly this season because I haven't won a league title. But at the end of the day that's not the truth.

“We only think we've failed because we haven't won and winning is the Manchester United spirit, it's the Manchester United way.

“If I played for another team then maybe we'd say to ourselves, ‘Well done for coming second, you've had a good season’. We might even celebrate.

“But when you play for United you have to accept that you have pressure to win every year, no matter what happens to you along the way. It doesn't matter if you've only got one leg, you have to win.”

Manchester United chief David Gill says money is available to manager Sir Alex Ferguson for this summer's market.

Gill had insisted cash was available for Ferguson to invest in his squad.

"Funds are available without a doubt," he said.

"We can still pay very well in terms of wages and transfer fees. Clearly City have raised the bar again. We have seen that with what they are prepared to pay for players and to them.

"But we need to move on. Financial Fair Play is just around the corner.

"It is a flagship programme for Michel Platini and how that is implemented and the sanctions that are imposed are going to be interesting.

"But we are a very successful club. Our turnover is amongst the top three in world football - over £300million a year.

"That generates income to invest in players and we will continue to do that."

Sir Alex ready to respond

Sir Alex Ferguson is still smarting from Sunday's agonising title defeat to Manchester City but has warned that United will respond next season.

In a passionate declaration of intent, the manager told MUTV that the Reds will continue investing in young players who will continue to form the character of the club. The manner in which United lost the crown to neighbours City may hurt but he retains faith in old heads like Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes and will be adding to the squad this summer.

"Obviously we knew QPR were in front," he admitted. "I said to Mike Phelan, ‘If City equalise, I’m worried they’ll get a big impetus from it.’ And that’s exactly what happened. I think everyone expected City to win and they made it difficult for themselves. Queens Park Rangers performed very well until they knew they were safe. That was disappointing. It’s hard to digest because we played so well at Sunderland. Their keeper made four fantastic saves, we’ve hit the post twice, hit the bar, missed a couple of good chances, we could have scored eight. When it comes down to goal difference, we’ve only ourselves to blame. This club always misses chances. We’re very charitable to our opponents.

“I think we’re disappointed about [losing] the eight-point lead. But I’m not going to have any recriminations for any of my players. They’re a solid bunch of lads, they’re honest, they’ve tried their best. Okay, they’ve made mistakes but there’s a lot of young players who make mistakes and we invest in that. That’s what we’re good at. We’re not like other clubs who can spend fortunes. We invest in players who’ll be with the club for a long time, who’ll create the character of the club, who’ll create excitement for our fans. And we have many players like that. We’re good at that and we’re going to continue that way.

“I think we’re good at it. And there’s an old saying, ‘ if you’re good at something, don’t mend it.’ But we have obviously lots of maturity in the team. I’m sure next season will be Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes’ last season – actually, I’m not so sure about Ryan. He defies age. But it will be probably Paul’s last year. Rio’s 33. But after those three we’ve no issues with age, no issues at all."

Sir Alex will be dipping into the transfer market to enhance his squad and he has specific targets already in mind.

“Yes, we want to add to the squad," he admitted. "That’s in process at the moment. We have set our stall out for certain players. We want to make sure the evolution of United continues because I’ve been at the club for 25 years and I have to maintain a certain standard that keeps us there all the time.

"We don’t always win it but we’re always there which is great credit to our medical staff, our coaching staff – Rene, Mick and Eric Steele have been fantastic – our sports science staff.. they’ve put a lot into our club. There’s nothing materially wrong with us. It’s interesting that one paper said today – I didn’t read it, I was told – that we’ll have to spend millions. And we had 89 points!"

The manager accepts Roberto Mancini's team will remain a threat - not only off the field but on it with the Etihad Stadium outfit competing for similar transfer targets and offering mind-boggling fees and salaries.

"We know that City are going to spend fortunes on players and pay silly salaries," he conceded. "We can’t do anything about that. We’ll look at what we can do in terms of attracting players for the right reasons. Obviously we’ll benefit them financially too, we’re not missing that aspect of it. But we do what we do well and we’re going to stay that way."

Four Manchester United players have made the cut for England's Euro 2012 squad.

Phil Jones, Ashley Young, Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney will all compete in Poland and Ukraine after being named in new manager Roy Hodgson's 23-man party for the big summer tournament.

There is no place for the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley and Chris Smalling, who has been ruled out through injury. Contrary to some speculation, Paul Scholes is not involved either as England take on France, Sweden and Ukraine in the finals when they begin life after Fabio Capello.

Rooney is suspended for the opening two games but will return for the clash with co-hosts Ukraine, while Welbeck is obviously a major contender to stand in for his Reds team-mate in the opening two fixtures.

Both Jones and Welbeck were impressive in the Under-21 European Championship last year while Smalling would surely have joined them had he not been ruled out with a groin injury.

Young is in hot form for his country, having scored five times since the start of 2011 in only give six starts with two further appearances as a substitute. Rooney, is of course, the leading man for England and will be expected to shine on the big stage.

Vidic relishes competition

Nemanja Vidic is pleased there will be intense competition for a centre-back spot next season.

The inspirational skipper was missed by the Reds after a cruciate knee injury ended his campaign back in December and, although he will not make the pre-season tour, it's expected he'll be fit for the start of the 2012/2013 term.

It promises to be a huge season for the club as United will bid to wrestle the Barclays Premier League trophy back across Manchester and Vidic feels the players will be up for the challenge.

When asked by MUTV if it may be hard to win his place back, he replied: "Definitely. Jonny [Evans] has had a great year. I think Chris [Smalling] as well, before he got injured, is looking for that position as central defender. Rio [Ferdinand] is fit after a long time and was fit for so many games so we now have really big competition next year.

"I don't mind that. I don't think any player minds that. It makes you train harder, play better and obviously we have so many games during the season that we need good players."

With the team still in evolution, accruing 89 points was some feat but obviously not enough to retain the title, something that hurts the Serbian.

"We cannot say we did well because we didn't win a trophy obviously," he stated. "But we have to remember a few players left, a few young players had to get used to playing every week for a club like Manchester United and we always have high expectations.

The young players did well and it was great experience for them this season. I think they managed really well but didn't have the luck in the end.

"I definitely believe we're going to be better next year. We want the trophy back. You have to remember we've had so much success in the past few years but generations have changed with new players.

"The club is looking to the future. We have to take some positives from this year. I believe next year will be a good year for the club and I believe we can win trophies again."

Fabio admits he will miss twin brother Rafael when he completes a loan move away from United.

The promising full-back will spend a season away from Old Trafford and Sir Alex Ferguson has already suggested a stint in Portugal is on the cards.

The Brazilian siblings are inseparable off the field but the manager feels Fabio will benefit from a new experience after being unable to dislodge Patrice Evra from the team.

"It's so, so hard," he told MUTV about the potential move. "It's very, very difficult for me and my brother as well but this is life.

"I have to play more games to improve my football and it's why I think it's better for me and for him as well.

"I had a good start and played a lot of games in the Champions League but, at the end, I've not played in many games. But it's okay and we go to the next season."

Giggs hails Gregg

Ryan Giggs says the Reds were only to happy to play their part in making it a night to remember at Harry Gregg's Testimonial in Belfast on Tuesday night.

A strong Reds' team secured a 4-1 victory over an Irish League XI thanks to goals from Patrice Evra, Ashley Young (2) and Wayne Rooney.

A sell-out crowd at Windsor Park, virtually all supporting Sir Alex's men, were clearly delighted with the result on a night when everyone came together to pay tribute to one man.

"All the lads are really proud to be involved in a night like this for someone who is a hero both on and off the pitch," Giggs told MUTV. "The testimonial is just reward for a great career and a great life.

"It's always nice to come back to Northern Ireland. The fans over here are unbelievably loyal.

"There was a full house tonight even after the disappointment of Sunday and they cheered us on all night. We always get a great welcome over here and we know how much the fans over here love the club.

"The standard [of the game] was pretty decent," added Giggs. "There were plenty of goals and plenty of good goals too. Hopefully we sent the crowd home happy."

Sir Alex told ManUtd.com: "It is a pleasure to have had Michael at Manchester United. Michael is a consummate professional and was an influential figure in our dressing room. Unfortunately he had no luck with his injury this season.

Ji-sung Park has reiterated his desire to end his career with United, despite not playing as much as he would have liked this season.

The Korean winger made 28 appearances in 2011/12, but was limited to a substitute role for much of the second half of the campaign.

Nevertheless, the 31-year-old told reporters in his homeland that he wants to see out his playing days at Old Trafford and help the Reds recover from this year's title heartache.

"It was a disappointing end to the season, both for the team and me personally," said Park, whose contract expires at the end of next season.

"But the past is the past and we must look forward. I'll focus on what to do from now on. It's true that I want to retire at United, but it does not depend on me.

Will Keane hopes the first-teamers are proud of the Reserves after a 2-0 victory in the Manchester Senior Cup final at the Etihad Stadium.

Warren Joyce's side triumphed in the final game of United's campaign with the 19-year-old striker scoring his 19th goal of a successful campaign. Victory ensured the squad could celebrate lifting a trophy for the second Thursday in succession after last week's play-off triumph against Aston Villa.

Keane produced a selfless display as a lone striker in a hard-fought success and also claimed the assist for Luke Giverin's injury-time clincher. Yet the centre-forward, who is linking up with the England Under-19 squad, felt it was not one of his better performances.

"It's been another successful year," he told MUTV. "Capped off with another two trophies. I'm delighted as it's what we aimed to do at the start of the season.

"You can see how much it means to the lads. The fact it's against City made it even more special. With everything that happened with the first-team last weekend, we wanted to make them proud. We've done that as it was a good, professional performance.

"It wasn't one of my greatest games. I didn't have many chances but, when I got one, I took it. I didn't have the ball much in the second half but we defended well and saw it out. We knew City were going to be a strong team because we played them in the same competition earlier in the season and they play a similar way to their first-team with little players who are clever on the ball. We knew we weren't always going to have the ball so we stayed with the runners and saw the game out."

When asked about the possibillity of going on tour with the Reds, although his participation could be complicated if England qualify for the Under-19 European Championship finals, he replied: "I always aim to keep improving and pushing on.

"If that's the next step, so be it. But I'll just take it as it comes and do my best."

Luke Giverin made his first-team debut in the Harry Gregg Testimonial on Tuesday and is rewarding the club's patience in his development.

The 19-year-old left-back came on for the second half of the 4-1 victory, replacing Patrice Evra, and was one of two youngsters to make his bow with Michele Fornasier also getting a run-out.

Giverin has not had much football this term, making only two substitute appearances for the Reserves at league level and a solitary outing as an over-aged player in the Under-18s. The teenager has featured more in the cup competitions for Warren Joyce's side and enjoyed plenty of action out in Dallas recently.

"We're waiting for his physical development," director of youth football Jim Ryan revealed to ManUtd.com. "He struggled a bit in the first game against FC Dallas but, in the second match, he suddenly burst into life and it was a fantastic piece of football from him for the Larnell Cole against Tigres. From then on, he did well. We hope he develops physically and can be another one who comes through."

Giverin capped an incredible week on a personal level by coming on towards the end of the Manchester Senior Cup final at the Etihad Stadium and running through to score the clincher deep into stoppage time to make it 2-0 to the Reserves.

Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck is grateful for the part Wayne Rooney has played in his rise to England's Euro 2012 squad.

Welbeck has been included in Roy Hodgson's squad for this summer's European Championships and could be set to replace Rooney during his ban for the first two games of the tournament.

The 21-year-old has usurped Javier Hernandez as Rooney's first-choice strike partner at United this season and he believes the former Everton wonderkid has been a huge help in his career.

"Wayne's funny like that, he calls me Daniel on the pitch, even though most people call me Danny. Yet off the pitch it's Danny or Welbz. Don't ask me why."
Danny Welbeck on Wayne Rooney Quotes of the week

Welbeck told The Sun: "I owe Wayne a lot. He has been a terrific friend and a brilliant help to me. We have really forged a great partnership.

"And he is amazing during a game. He never stops yapping in my ear, telling me, 'Daniel this' and 'Daniel that'.

"Wayne's funny like that, he calls me Daniel on the pitch, even though most people call me Danny. Yet off the pitch it's Danny or Welbz. Don't ask me why.

Lucky

"I'm so lucky he wants me to do well and is always trying to advise what's best for me. You can't buy that sort of insight. He knows what it's like as a young player coming through in the Premier League and with England."

Welbeck also revealed another United team-mate Rio Ferdinand, who was controversially left out of Hodgson's squad, contacted the forward to congratulate him on his inclusion.

Welbeck said: "He made the effort to get in touch which I think tells you all about the man.

"He was obviously gutted not to be a part of it and must have been really down. But he still took the time to contact me and say 'Well done'.

"I'm really disappointed for him."

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has effectively retired from international football, it has been revealed, as he is not willing to be involved with the England team in a bit-part role.

Eyebrows were raised when Roy Hodgson left Carrick out of his squad for Euro 2012 but the former West Brom manager told reporters that the 30-year-old had no interest in being included on the standby list.

Hodgson hinted that he had preferred to select Gareth Barry, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Scott Parker and as such could not promise Carrick a prominent role.

"I wouldn't dream of putting Michael on a standby list after he has made it clear in the past he doesn't want to be involved like that," Hodgson told reporters.

"I'd have to be convinced he was better than the four I've selected and that he'd be happy to come out of retirement."

Carrick has won only 22 England caps despite having made his debut for the national team as a 20-year-old while at West Ham in 2001.

He was included in the England squad that travelled to South Africa for the 2010 World Cup but did not play a single minute of football during the tournament, and has only had 15 starts in 11 years as an international.

"Michael will help in an extreme case," added managing director of Club England Adrian Bevington.

Manchester United captain Patrice Evra has blasted former teammate Carlos Tevez over his attack on manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Evra is good friends with the Manchester City striker, but was disgusted by Tevez's 'RIP Fergie' actions and refusal to apologise.

He rapped: “I was very surprised by Tevez’s attitude against Sir Alex Ferguson.

“I’m not sure how the manager feels about it but I’m sure he won’t be impressed.

“It’s disrespectful. Tevez spent two years at this club and was treated extremely well by the manager so I don’t really understand his reaction or the truth about the situation.”

Evra reckons United’s rivals were equally guilty of bad taste when they put up a massive poster of Tevez with the message ‘Welcome to Manchester’ when the striker swapped clubs in 2009.

The French full-back, 31, added: “The poster was in very bad taste, no one from Manchester United appreciated it.

“Tevez is an adult, he plays for another club and is responsible for his own actions.

“It’s a shame because he was always respected at Manchester United and remained in contact with some of the players.

“But I have no idea what will happen now.”

Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United will bounce back "better than ever" next season after missing out on the club's twentieth league championship by the slenderest of margins.

This time last week (Sunday), the Reds striker looked to have scored the title-clinching goal for the second year in a row - 12 months after his priceless penalty at Ewood Park. But when the tantalising advantage created by his 20th-minute header at the Stadium of Light was cruelly overturned by Manchester City's injury-time exploits, Wayne was left wondering what might have been.

“Of course, you wish it hadn’t happened like that for our fans," Rooney told ManUtd.com, when reflecting on the last-day drama. "And for us as players, it was sickening really to lose the title like that.

"Our fans were brilliant all day, even when Man City scored their first goal. We obviously knew on the pitch they had gone 1-0 up and we were also aware when QPR went 2-1 up.

"When the final whistle went, we didn’t really know what the score was. But then we heard the Sunderland fans cheering. It was sad to see that because they should be supporting their own team really. They didn’t have the best of seasons themselves so for them to be cheering like that was sad. It was something that myself and a lot of the players won’t forget.”

Although the silverware is now with City, Rooney still feels proud of United's league campaign and positive about the bid to bring the trophy back to Old Trafford in May 2013.

"We can hold our heads up high because we pushed Man City all the way and it went to goal difference," Rooney told ManUtd.com. "We’ll be back, no worries about that, we’ll be back stronger.

"Everyone’s been saying how well Man City have played and how they’ve dominated the Premier League but if that’s them dominating, they’ve done it on goal difference… We’ll be back, better than ever.”

Ashley Young's goalscoring prowess has been hailed by Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson ahead of next month's European Championship.

Last summer's signing from Aston Villa scored eight goals for the Reds in his debut season including outstanding doubles against both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

Further evidence of Young's form was provided in Tuesday's post-season friendly - he netted twice in the Harry Gregg Testimonial - and he could be a key figure for England at Euro 2012 in his first major tournament.

"Ashley scored eight goals which is a good contribution in his first season here," said Sir Alex. "He has a goal in him. There's definitely a goal in that lad. He's a good finisher."

England boss Roy Hodgson has indicated that he only selected four strikers in his squad - even though Wayne Rooney is suspended for the first two games - because the likes of Young and Arsenal's Theo Walcott are able to play in more advanced roles.

Young has an excellent goalscoring record at international level with five strikes for his country since the start of 2011.

Dimitar Berbatov admits he has no choice but to quit Manchester United as he no longer feels valued at Old Trafford.

The talented striker is expected to move on over the summer despite the club taking up an extra year's option on the Bulgarian's contract in March.

Sir Alex Ferguson concedes a player of Berbatov's ability deserves to be playing more regularly having slipped behind Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez in the pecking order.

Berbatov remains a popular figure in Manchester but having made just 21 appearances last term concedes his future lies elsewhere.

"My time at Manchester United is running out," he told bTV on Sunday. "I no longer feel like a valuable part of this team.

"I think I did well in the few opportunities that I received. But I am a little frustrated by the way this happened, I do not think I deserved it."

Hint taken

Berbatov claims he was persistently offered reassurances from Sir Alex Ferguson over his future during the campaign but now no longer seeks such placatory talks.

"I've talked 10 times or even more with the manager and he always told me there would be a place for me in the team. But after that I continued to stay on the bench," he added.

"But I have dignity and I stopped going to such meetings, it is clear that I'm leaving United. It's obvious that I have to leave.

"I'm looking for a new place now... I know I can still play at the highest level."

The classy 31-year-old has been linked with a number of sides since making known his possible availability but one club he will not be joining is United's neighbours across the city.

"I would never join Man City, I am a loyal person after all," he said. "I had the opportunity to sign for City in the past, but I chose United."

Manchester United chief executive David Gill insists the club will continue their policy of loaning out promising youngsters.

Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley have both established themselves amongst the first-team squad this season following spells at Sunderland and Wigan respectively last term.

Welbeck in particular has seized his opportunity, scoring 12 goals in 40 appearances as the Red Devils fell just short of the Premier League crown on the final day of the season.

Cleverley has seen his chances curtailed by injury somewhat, though the 22-year-old is highly rated at Old Trafford.

"Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley have done very well and come back in after spells with other teams" - David Gill

When asked whether club will continue to loan players out, Gill told the club's official website: "It's always been a feature. We've done that for many years.

"Alex and the coaching staff will work closely to try and place players in the right teams for their development.

"We have seen that with people like Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley who have done very well and come back in after spells with other teams.

"Let's see what happens but it's good for them and good for us."

The likes of Robbie Brady and Joshua King, who have spent this season on loan at Hull City, are hoped to be the next crop of youngsters to make the step up.

Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has told David de Gea to forget about comparisons with him.

Van der Sar says De Gea will be under pressure to live up to his standards.

"Maybe it was hard to follow in my footsteps," said Van der Sar. "It can happen. People got compared to Peter Schmeichel, now maybe it's me.

"De Gea has to ignore that and just play his own game.

"Eric Steele, the goalkeeping coach, and the manager will both help him and hopefully next season he will be ready from the start."

He added: "He did get criticism last season but I made mistakes at Ajax when I was young, and also at Juventus and United.

"The main thing is how you recover in the next game, or the game itself. He did that. He became more important as the season went on and made good saves.

"I have not seen him in his shorts, so physically, it is difficult to say how big he actually is. But I am sure United knew all that when they signed him, so would have been aware of what to expect."

Phil Jones admits he will learn from the bitter experience of losing out on the Barclays Premier League title on goal difference in dramatic circumstances on the final day of the campaign.

Last summer's recruit from Blackburn took the news of Manchester City's two late goals as hard as anybody at the Stadium of Light but at least he received a boost with a call-up to England's Euro 2012 squad.

Despite his international commitments, the 20-year-old is already relishing the chance to claim the title back from Roberto Mancini's Blues once the new season gets underway in August.

"It was mixed feelings at the final whistle," he recalled to ManUtd.com. "I thought we’d pulled off the impossible at first, we thought QPR had done us a massive favour with a difficult task of going to the Etihad. But then City scored two goals in quick succession and that killed us.

"I’ll take that on board with what I’ve learned this season. It’s been a massive learning curve for me and I’ve played a lot of games this season and I’ve really enjoyed playing.”

Such a fine line between success and failure brought things into perspective for Jones who admits to experiencing a 'whirlwind season'.

"Of course, that’s football," he admitted. "Things like that can happen and we’ve perhaps been a bit unfortunate this season but so be it. City have won it this year but hopefully we’ll be back next season, fighting and ready to go again.

"It’s been a whirlwind season for me. We’ve been unfortunate with injuries this season which has probably enabled me to play more games than I expected.

"I’ve really enjoyed it and I feel like I’ve really progressed and come on as a player. It’s a massive learning curve for me. Being at United in my first season has really given me an insight into the passion and drive the club has.

"The history speaks for itself and we’ll do it the United way, we’ll bounce back and we’ll go again next season."

Rio Ferdinand was pleased with his personal contribution to United's season after making his highest number of appearances in all competitions since the 2008/2009 season.

The classy defender also racked up his most league outings for four seasons to quell any fears over his fitness as he managed to feature extensively for the Reds. Speaking before his exclusion from England's Euro 2012 squad, the centre-back feels his form was consistent at Barclays Premier League level.

When asked by ManUtd.com if he feels good after a long season, he replied: "Yes, I feel good. I’m just pleased to have played a number of games back to back. For the last couple of years, that’s all I’ve been praying for. To have a few games on the bounce and I’ll be able to find my way back to playing well and playing consistently. This season I thought I’d done that."

Ferdinand is still coming to terms with the disappointment of losing the title to Manchester City on the final day when Roberto Mancini's team netted twice in injury time against QPR to snatch glory from United's grasp.

"You only want to be a part of something like that when you’ve won and we haven’t," he said of the last-day drama. "Coming second is no consolation and there’s no prize for coming second.

"In another season, that tally of points would have won the league. City spent a lot of money but you have to give them credit. Anyone who wins the league in this country are worthy champions because it’s a tough league to win.

"We’ve had a lot of problems with our squad in terms of injuries. No excuses at all but to deal with the amount of injuries and disruption we’ve had in our squad this season, to get to where we did, is testament to the depth of squad we’ve got."

Manchester United icon Ryan Giggs won't take his Team GB selection for granted.

Giggs has already put himself forward and is hopeful of making the cut after missing out on playing at a major tournament with Wales.

He said: "I've put myself forward to be involved with the Olympics. Whether I get picked we'll have to wait and see.

"Obviously everybody is excited about it, about the Olympics coming to London and coming to different parts of Britain so yeah I'll have to wait and see.

"I've spoken to Stuart Pearce but I think the majority of players have. I'd love to be involved and hope I will be.

"I've not played in a tournament so to do that it would be nice to do that to be involved in a tournament atmosphere because I've never experienced that.

WAYNE ROONEY has warned Sunderland fans he will not forget their gloating over Manchester United’s title heartbreak.

United thought they were Premier League champions after beating the Black Cats at the Stadium of Light on the final day.

But within seconds news came through Sergio Aguero had scored a last-gasp winner against QPR as Manchester City snatched the trophy out their neighbour’s grasp.

Sunderland supporters cheered and taunted United’s players by doing City’s adopted ‘Poznan’ celebration.

Now Rooney and Co cannot wait until they face Sunderland again next season.

He said: “When the final whistle went, we didn’t really know what the score at City was. But then we heard the Sunderland fans cheering.

“It was sad to see that because they should be supporting their own team really.

“They didn’t have the best of seasons so for them to be cheering like that was sad.

“It was something myself and a lot of the players won’t forget.”

United led by eight points by the end of Easter Sunday but lost their crown on goal difference after injury-time goals from Edin Dzeko and Aguero on a dramatic final day.

Roo said: “You wish it hadn’t happened like that for our fans. As players, it was sickening to lose the title like that.

“Everyone’s been saying how well City have played and how they’ve dominated the Premier League.

“But if that’s them dominating, they’ve done it on goal difference. We can hold our heads up high because we pushed City all the way.

“We will be back, there’s no worries about that — we will be back stronger and better than ever.”

Young wins May award

Ashley Young edged a close vote on ManUtd.com to be named Manchester United's Player of the Month for May 2012.

The Reds played only two games in what was an anti-climactic end to the season – against Swansea and Sunderland – but Young starred in them both.

The winger scored the Reds’ second goal against the Swans with a neat curling finish and was arguably his side’s main attacking threat in that game and at the Stadium of Light.

Young (36%) pipped Paul Scholes (33%) in the fans’ poll to pick up the final monthly award – and his first – of 2011/12. Michael Carrick, Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand were the other nominees for May.

In all, eight different players shared the 10 Player of the Month awards during 2011/12. The full list of winners is as follows: Wayne Rooney (August, April), Nani (September), Javier Hernandez (October), David De Gea (November, February), Dimitar Berbatov (December), Antonio Valencia (January), Jonny Evans (March), Ashley Young (May).

Blog: Well done Welbeck!

Adam Marshall says it's a mark of Danny Welbeck's progress that nobody was surprised by his Euro 2012 inclusion...

Eyebrows were raised in 2009 when Sir Alex Ferguson predicted Danny Welbeck would gatecrash Fabio Capello's World Cup squad the following year.

As it turned out, the United manager was only one tournament out with his bold attempt at soothsaying despite the comment looking outlandish at the time. Fast forward to 2012 and nobody batted an eyelid when the 21-year-old was one of only four strikers selected by Roy Hodgson.

Many even reckon Welbeck is in pole position to deputise for team-mate Wayne Rooney in the opening two games of the tournament. The Daily Mail suggests he is likely to be fourth-choice for Hodgson but clearly he did more over the course of the season than both Andy Carroll and Jermain Defoe to merit a place in the line-up.

A lot of the focus in the media was rightly on Rio Ferdinand's exclusion but his United colleague's call was not a surprise. If you consider that he was rated on a similar level to Daniel Sturridge at the start of the campaign, it's an achievement just to be ahead of the Chelsea hitman, who is only on the stand-by list.

Both Welbeck and Sturridge played in the Under-21 European Championship in Denmark last year and, as I mentioned when interviewing him for Inside United, it seemed a portent to the future when the caption came up reflecting the number of goals he'd scored in the finals after hitting the net for a second time. I think it's something all people of a certain age remember from major tournaments of yesteryear, those older than me will tell you Jairzinho's strikes at the 1970 were always accompanied by 'Jair' and an ever-increasing tally.

Let's hope our young forward does score for England this summer and that he enhances his already burgeoning reputation. He deserves congratulations just for making the plane to Ukraine and Poland and his potential is frightening. It's exciting for all United fans to imagine what he can achieve next term after doing so well in his first full season in Sir Alex's side. The highest compliment I can pay him is that I always felt we missed his energy and drive when he didn't play.

There's always a worry amongst Reds when our players compete in major tournament. As well as the obvious threat of injury, there have been numerous examples of Old Trafford favourites being made scapegoats for one reason or another - red cards (David Beckham and Wayne Rooney), conceding penalties (Phil Neville), missing spot-kicks (Beckham again), winking (Cristiano Ronaldo) and so on. But we have every reason to be positive about Welbeck's participation in his first major tournament. The experience gained should only be of benefit to his overall game and I can't wait to see him wearing the red shirt again come August.

Berbatov closing in on PSG move

Dimitar Berbatov is closing in on a summer switch to Paris Saint Germain. He’s desperate to quit Manchester United after falling down the pecking *order.

United manager Sir Alex *Ferguson wanted to use the Bulgarian as a makeweight in a £14m deal to land Borussia Dortmund’s Poland international Robert Lewandowski.

But Berbatov has opened talks with Carlo Ancelotti’s big spenders instead. Ancelotti is a huge admirer of the 31-year-old and reckons his experience could be vital in the Champions League next season.

The Qatar-owned outfit have millions at their disposal and Berbatov’s valuation of around £7m is well within budget. Ancelotti can match Berbatov’s £90,000-a-week wages too and could even agree to a pay rise to land him.

The striker started just five league games for United last season and knows his time in Manchester is up. Berbatov’s agent Emil Danchev said: "PSG’s project can really interest him because he wants to play in the Champions League''.

Giggs praises supporters

Ryan Giggs has expressed his admiration for Manchester United's new generation - and has thanked the fans for backing those who broke into the team on a regular basis last season.

The veteran midfielder understands that life can be challenging for players trying to impress at Old Trafford but he feels there has been plenty of support and patience for the likes of Danny Welbeck, Tom Cleverley, David De Gea, Ashley Young and Phil Jones - even if their form occasionally dipped below the high standards they have already set.

Giggs can speak from experience after narrowly missing losing the title race to Leeds in his first full season as a regular starter and he is convinced his younger team-mates will respond positively to the setback.

"It’s been great for the more established players to see the young players come through and do so well," Ryan told ManUtd.com.

"I know from myself as a young player who came through how tough it can be sometimes. When everything’s going well for the team, it’s all great and everything’s rosy. Then you hit a bit of bad form and it’s more difficult for a younger player because you haven't got a platform to fall back upon.

"[That said] I was really impressed with the consistency of all the young players and the new signings who came in last season."

The backing of the supporters is clearly appreciated by all the staff with the Reds already preparing for another assault on the title next time around.

"The fans were great," Giggs enthused. "They supported us all the way through the season. We appreciated the support they gave, especially to the young players who came through. The fans recognise the young players are still trying to find their way and find their feet at the club. The fans supported the young players really well.

"The support of the fans is always important – when we’re playing at Old Trafford, they can almost suck the ball into the net. They'll obviously be keen for us to do well next season."

The heartbreaking finale to the 2011/2012 campaign has just made Giggs even more determined to extend his collection of league winners' medals to 13 and retrieve the Premier League trophy from across town.

“It’s always hard when it’s on your doorstep," Ryan explained. "To lose against City and the manner in which we lost is always hard to take. But we’ve faced disappointments before and we’ve always come back and that’s what we need to do again.

"We’ve had so many highs over so many years but you’ve got to take the lows. You’ve got to take it on the chin and come back bigger and better next year.”

Ryan Giggs has no concerns about putting his body through another physically demanding season with Manchester United.

Giggs, who will turn 39 in November, recently completed his 22nd season of top-flight football and is even eyeing more minutes on the pitch this summer when Great Britain take part in the Olympic Games.

The Welshman told ManUtd.com he’s feeling as fit as ever.

“I felt good against Sunderland,” said Giggs. “It was the last game of the season and yet I still felt good.

“So now I’ll get refreshed this summer and look to go again next season. Hopefully we’ll get a positive result at the end of it. We were so near [to winning the title] this year but sometimes you need disappointments in your career, and your life, to go forward.”

Giggs, owner of 12 championship medals, admits it was heartbreaking to lose the league to neighbours Manchester City in such dramatic fashion on the final day of the season. But he’s confident the Reds will bounce back in 2012/13.

“When our game at Sunderland ended we were just on the pitch not knowing what was going on. And then news got to us that City had won.

“It was a massive disappointment obviously after what had been a fantastic season. Getting 89 points is amazing, really, and it would have won the league in most of the last 10 or 15 years. Comfortably.

“So it’s disappointing to have been so near but then again, there are so many positives to take out of the season as well.

“I think you’re more driven when you lose a trophy. We refer to it as our trophy because we’ve won it so many times and I think when we do lose it, we want it back and we want it back quickly.

"We’ve faced disappointments before and we’ve always come back and that’s what we need to do now. We’ve had so many highs over however many years but you’ve got to take the lows as well. You’ve got to take it on the chin and come back bigger and better next year."
