Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign striker Javier Hernandez from Mexican side Chivas de Guadalajara for an undisclosed fee.

The deal for the 21-year-old, who has scored four goals in four senior international appearances for Mexico, is subject to a work permit.

Personal terms have been agreed and Hernandez passed a medical this week.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: "I am delighted to have reached a deal to sign such an exciting young striker."

He added: "He has been in prolific form for both his club and his country. He will be a great addition to our squad and we look forward to welcoming our first Mexican player in the summer."

The club is to submit an application for Hernandez - who is known by the nickname Chicarito, which means 'little pea' - and if it is granted, he will become a United player on 1 July.

"I feel like I am living a dream," Hernandez told MUTV.

"All the impressions I have of the club are good and Sir Alex Ferguson is a great person, maybe the best coach in the world."

Should he, as expected, make Mexico's World Cup squad, United fans could be given their first glimpse of his talents when they take on England in a friendly at Wembley on 24 May.

"I hope to be at the World Cup," Hernandez commented.

"I have to work hard to win a place in the national team, then I might get a chance to play against England."

As part of the deal, United have agreed to play a match to open the new 45,000-capacity Chivas Stadium in Guadalajara as part of its 2010-11 season preparations.

Hernandez is United's second capture for next season having reached agreement to sign defender Chris Smalling from Fulham in January.

Manchester United will go west to prepare for the 2010/11 season, with new matches announced today for Toronto, Philadelphia, Kansas City and Houston.

The squad, headed by Ryan Giggs and including stars such as Paul Scholes, Edwin van der Sar, Darren Fletcher, Antonio Valencia, John O’Shea, Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov, will be bolstered by a number of the promising young players, such as Federico Macheda and the da Silva twins.

First stop is a training camp in Chicago, home of new shirt sponsors Aon. This will be followed by a visit to the Rogers Center in Toronto for a match against Celtic on 16 July, then a return to the Lincoln Financial Field, where United played in 2003 and 2004, against Philadelphia Union on 21 July. Four days later, the Kansas City Wizards provide the opposition at the Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City. The US matches are completed in Houston on 28 July with a game against the MLS All-Stars in the Reliant Stadium.

Two days later, as already announced, the squad will play the Club’s first ever match in Mexico to open Chivas’ new 45,000 seat stadium in Guadalajara.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: “It’s great to be going back to North America. I enjoyed the last two tours there in 2003 and 2004 immensely. The quality of the facilities is outstanding and there is a real enthusiasm in the crowds. It’s especially pleasing to be going in a World Cup year, when the interest in football will be at its height.”

Dimitar Berbatov has admitted that he is uncertain about his future at Manchester United after a disappointing season at Old Trafford.

The Bulgaria captain, who announced his decision to quit international football on Thursday, is worried about the prospect of United boss Sir Alex Ferguson adding another striking option in the summer.

With reports linking United to Primera Liga pair Karim Benzema and David Villa, the 29-year-old thinks his options will be limited next season.

"I'm sure United will buy a new striker - but I am there and that's important," he said.

"In my two years, things could have been better but they could have been worse, too. I have had my moments.

"I have won the title and the Carling Cup but people had great expectations for the money it cost to sign me. We do not know what will happen in the third year."

Despite his United future looking bleak, Berbatov denied suggestions that he is lining up a new club, and insists he is happy at Old Trafford.

"I will try to fulfil my contract because where would I go after United? I have reached the top with them.

"I do not know about interest from other clubs and I have had no meetings."

So he should be worried:D, Berbatov is a good player but for some reason it just hasn't happened for him at United.. think he might be sold although Fergie will probably give him one more season to prove his worth;).

JOSE MOURINHO is convinced he will succeed Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager.

The new Real Madrid coach has mapped out a managerial masterplan that takes him to Old Trafford when Ferguson steps aside.

Ferguson has twice hinted recently that he will quit United in two years and that will open the door for Mourinho's dramatic return to the Premier League.

Despite tensions between the pair when Mourinho was Chelsea boss, they are good friends and are in regular contact by telephone.

The Portuguese coach is plotting a path that takes him to Real Madrid to win La Liga before a sensational return to English football at United.

Mourinho set himself a target to pick up league titles in England, Italy and Spain as part of his long-term strategy to get the United job.

He has already achieved stunning success with Chelsea and Inter, but his dream is to manage the world's biggest football club.

His next stop is Real Madrid and he will start with the target of wrestling the title from Barcelona in his first season.

Although Real Madrid will be another short-term project for Mourinho, he has told friends he would be in it for the long-haul if he is offered the United job.

Mourinho initially feared United's suits may not see the controversial coach as the "right fit", but he has been assured that is not the case.

He has turned down approaches from Manchester City (twice) and soundings from Liverpool in order to keep the option of managing United open.

Instead he now wants to manage the world's biggest football clubs as part of a project that includes spells at Inter, Real Madrid and United.

Mourinho rejected Garry Cook's last summer and despite a remarkably discreet effort by City's standards in recent weeks, he is not interested.

The former Chelsea manager established himself as the most sought-after coach in Europe again after Inter's Euro triumph.

He remains big box office in England and he is confident that he will become United's manager when Ferguson retires.

Fergie hinted that he will quit in two years time during a speech at a sportsman's dinner held for Premier League referee Mark Halsey.

And chief executive David Gill said about Mourinho this week: "He's done well, hasn't he? He has certainly got something about him. He's a winner."

Manchester United will ask veteran trio Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville to remain at Old Trafford as coaches when their playing days come to an end.

All three have recently penned one-year extension deals, which will keep them at the Red Devils until the end of next season.

Giggs has almost 800 appearances for United since progressing through the youth system, while Neville and Scholes are both exceeding 500 outings for the club.

And United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes theit vast experience is central to developing the future generations on the red half of Manchester.

"They are living proof for young players that the United [Manchester United] system allows players to succeed," Ferguson told L’Equipe.

"When they stop playing they will stay. All three are taking their coaching diplomas. I don’t think the club will pass up that much experience."

Ferguson also earmarked Patrice Evra, John O’Shea and Darren Fletcher as future team leaders, will addressing concerns regarding United’s debt following recent comments from out-going Ben Foster and chief executive David Gill.

"Protesting has become a reflex action these days. There are fans protesting against the Glazers [Manchester United's owners], which doesn’t bother me because it doesn’t interfere with the team," he added.

"The fans love their club here and they are worried. I don’t share their worry.

"I have a talented squad, a superb training complex, a magnificent stadium, we’re fighting for the biggest titles every season so it’s easy for me to keep my distance from all these issues."

Red Knights 'to drop £1bn Man Utd bid'
Page last updated at 14:27 GMT, Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:27 UK
E-mail this to a friend Printable version Some Manchester Utd fans would like to see a change of club ownership A consortium of businessmen tipped as possible buyers of Manchester United will shelve plans to make an offer, a report says.

The Red Knights were expected to make a bid of about £1bn in the coming weeks.

But the Sunday Times said this had been put on ice after investors baulked at the club's valuation.

Manchester United has said it is not for sale and that the Glazer family owners would "not entertain any offers".

The Glazers are said to value the club at £1.5bn.

The paper cited sources close to the Red Knights saying that the club's debts, the lack of money spent on players in recent years and rumours of manager Sir Alex Ferguson being close to retirement meant there was "a lot more downside than upside".

Revenues increased

On Friday the club announced a cut in debt from £543.3m a year ago to £520.9m for the January to March period.

In Man Utd's quarterly financial results, the figures also showed net assets of £794.9m and a cash balance of £95.9m.

The Old Trafford club said that in the nine months to March, year-on-year revenues were up 13.5% from £193.3m to £219.3m.

It also reported that quarterly match-day, commercial and media revenues had increased on three months ago.

However, losses for the quarter were up from £5.87m to £65.94m, mostly relating to various financing charges and costs.

Debts

Manchester United was bought by the Glazer family for £800m in 2005. In the 2009/10 season the club finished second to Chelsea in the Premier League.

They were also knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter finals, and have ended the season relatively unsuccessfully by their standards, winning only the League Cup.

Critics say the family has saddled United with massive debts, and the Red Knights have said that one of their priorities is to reduce debt levels.

Earlier this year the club launched a seven-year £538m bond that enabled them to refinance much of their more costly debt.

Fans have launched a campaign to oust the Glazers, many boycotting the traditional red shirts and scarves and instead wearing green and gold, the original colours of Newton Heath, the amateur side which was founded in 1878 and became Manchester United.

However, the club does not believe it has fully maximised its revenue streams from global commercial opportunities.

The Red Knights have confirmed they will not be making a bid for Manchester United this summer but remain committed to usurping the Glazers.

The green and gold campaign, which has seen supporters don the colours of the club's predecessors Newton Heath at matches in protest at the Glazers' running of the club, had seemed to gather momentum towards the end of the season.

However the American owners, who plunged the Red Devils into over £700million of debt when taking over in 2005, have insisted that the club is not for sale.

Rumours that a £1.5billion offer from a Far East consortium had been rejected by the Glazers last week has forced the Red Knights to temporarily withdraw their interest until a more realistic figure is reached - thought to be in the region of £1billion.

"The Red Knights remain committed to pursuing their efforts to try and help bring ownership of Manchester United to its supporters, and under a structure with materially less debt," said a statement on behalf of the group.

"As we have maintained however since news of our ambitions first emerged in March, we will only attempt to purchase the club at a sensible price, consistent with the long-term interests of the club.

"Persistent speculation in the media of inflated valuation aspirations has made our goals less attainable, as potential investors have strongly reinforced our views that we should not move forward at a price uneconomic for the future of the club."

Disappointment
The news will disappoint many fans who believed a takeover was possible but now the Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) is likely to call for a boycott of all season tickets.

United chief executive David Gill last week claimed that sales were in line with previous years and the Red Knights admit that supporters must make their own decision on whether to continue to come through the gates.

"We understand that many supporters were hoping that we might be in a position to make a bid before the season ticket renewal deadline," the statement continued.

"However our approach is best served by long-term interests of all. We have never taken a stance on season ticket renewals, it is a personal choice for all supporters.

"We have spent some considerable time assessing the value of the club. If the fundamentals lead to a more realistic re-assessment then, along with our co-operation with MUST and other Manchester United supporters, we will aim to achieve our goals."

Skysports.com understands Tom Cleverley is poised to sign a new deal at Manchester United.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to reward the talented midfielder with a new long-term deal at Old Trafford.

The England Under 21 international is highly regarded within the corridors of Old Trafford and is seen as a key player in Ferguson's future plans.

Cleverley enjoyed a successful loan spell at Watford last season, scoring 11 goals in 33 appearances and in the process scooping the club's player of the year prize.

The 20-year-old is happy at United and is expected to sign a new three-year extension at the club.

A number of Premier League clubs are thought to be keen on signing Cleverley on loan next season and it remains to be seen if Ferguson will continue to allow his best young players go out on loan in a bid to get regular first-team action under their belts.

Wayne Rooney has been given an extended holiday by Manchester United as Sir Alex Ferguson attempts to rebuild his star striker’s shattered confidence.

Ferguson contacted *Rooney during the week to assess his physical and mental state following *England’s World Cup *debacle in South Africa.

The PFA and FWA *Footballer of the Year assured his manager that he suffered no fitness *problems during the *tournament – despite claims he was being hampered by the ankle *injury he suffered in March.

But Ferguson still told him that he will not be *taking him on United’s *pre-season tour of North America later this month.

A United insider said: “Sir Alex has spoken to Wayne to make sure he wasn’t blaming himself for what happened in South Africa.

“Wayne assured him that he was physically fit and suffered no injury problems with England.

“But it was agreed that Wayne should go away and recharge his batteries for the new season.

Watched United vs Celtic friendly yesterday.. Impressed with the performance from all the players, particularly Dimitar Berbatov who scored one goal with his technique and assisted with the other two. Seems like he has taken the criticism on board and has worked on his game although the break he has had will have refreshed him:D.

Chris Smalling is showing promise and will continue to get better as a player with the support of Fergie, the coaching staff and players support along with us fans:D.

Nemanja Vidic's agent has stressed that Real Madrid have yet to make an approach for the Manchester United defender.

The Serbian's future has been the subject of intense speculation for some time and Real have been heavily linked with a summer swoop.

Sir Alex Ferguson remains confident of keeping Vidic and the latest comments from the player's representative would not suggest a departure is imminent.

Silvano Martino accepts that he cannot rule out a move, but says he is in the dark over any possible interest from Real.

The 28-year-old, who is currently resting after the World Cup, is focused on playing for United and will return to training with the Red Devils next week.

"Real Madrid? So far the Spanish club has not contacted us," Martino told Itasportpress.it.

"The player is on holiday in Mallorca and he is thinking about next season with Manchester United.

"It is difficult for him to leave England even if with the market open anything can happen."

Come on Nemanja you're better off staying at United and improving yourself each year:).

Nemanja Vidic has ended speculation over his future at Manchester United by agreeing a new long-term deal with the club.

Vidic had been linked with a move to several of Europe's top sides over the summer but United have shaken hands on terms with the Serbian defender to end any prospect of a move.

Real Madrid were widely expected to make a bid for the stopper's services, however chief executive David Gill has confirmed a "long-term" contract has been agreed by both parties.

Vidic is currently resting following his participation in the World Cup finals in South Africa but he will link-up with his team-mates next week as a Red Devils man for the foreseeable future.

The news will boost manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who had remained confident of keeping hold of his stalwart defender.

Pleased
Gill told MUTV: "I am very pleased to confirm that we agreed terms with Nemanja three or four weeks ago on a new long-term deal with the club."

Gill revealed that discussions over the new terms began at the end of last season, which saw United relinquish their grip on the Premier League title.

The length of the deal remains unclear but the Old Trafford supremo said Vidic would sign the contract when he returns from holiday.

Gill continued: "We sat down with Nemanja and his advisor at the end of last season and started discussions. They broke up when Nemanja went away to the World Cup, but resumed when Serbia were knocked out.

"It's yet to be signed - the paperwork is now being sorted by our lawyers and being checked by Nemanja's advisors. He's still away on holiday but the plan is that when he gets back the papers will be signed.

Shaken hands
"We've shaken hands on it and we're confident it will all be signed and sealed in early August. It's great news for Manchester United and great news for Nemanja and the fans."

Gill said he never believed speculation suggesting Vidic would exit the club over the summer.

The centre-back had reportedly been a target of a number of sides from the continent and Jose Mourinho - now in charge of Real Madrid - was a reported admirer of the former Spartak Moscow man.

But Gill insisted any talk of a move was nonsense. He added: "There was a lot of speculation about Nemanja's future, but in my view it's been the media drumming some old stories.

"They certainly didn't come out of the Manchester United camp and I'm confident they didn't come out of Nemanja's camp."

Manchester United chief executive David Gill says he will hold talks with Wayne Rooney over extending his stay at the club.

United announced on Friday night they had agreed a new "long-term" deal with defender Nemanja Vidic and striker Rooney is now on Gill's radar.

Rooney - like Vidic - still has two years to run on his existing contract but the Old Trafford hierarchy are eager to tie down their lynchpin striker.

The England front man is resting following his country's World Cup campaign and Gill says negotiations will begin when the 24-year-old returns from holiday.

Desires
Sir Alex Ferguson's team are currently on a pre-season tour meaning any immediate talks are on hold, however Gill says Rooney wants to remain under the Scotsman's stewardship.

Gill said: "The current intention is to meet with Wayne and his advisors when we're back from tour and he's back from holiday with a view to sorting out a new deal for him.

"It's clear from what he has said and what the club have said that both parties are very keen to sort things out and secure his long-term future at United.

"Given his desires and what he means to the club we're very confident that can be achieved."

Double yes:D, also Evra has now been suspended from France duty along with the other players.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is delighted to have secured a new deal for Nemanja Vidic.

The 28-year-old centre-half has agreed a four-year contract extension at Old Trafford, despite speculation linking him with a move away last season.

Vidic reportedly had a bust-up with Ferguson and the likes of Real Madrid were thought to be sniffing around the Serbia international, but he has now committed to the Red Devils.

The news comes as a welcome boost for United given Rio Ferdinand's persistent fitness problems, and Ferguson was pleased to get the deal done.

He said: "In the modern day game it is not easy renewing players' contracts when they do well, particularly those from other countries.

"Over the last year or so there has been speculation about Nemanja time and time again, sometimes by the press, sometimes fuelled by other sources.

"But we never had a strong feeling he really wanted to leave. There is always concern if they do well they want better contracts.

"At the end of the day we have managed to achieve the task of getting him to agree a four-year contract.

"We are delighted, he is fantastic centre-half, a great competitor with a marvellous attitude to winning games. It strengthens our hand."

Vidic has been at United for four-and-a-half years, having signed for the club from Spartak Moscow in 2006.

England captain Rio Ferdinand's knee problem may sideline him until early September, according to Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 31-year-old suffered a ligament injury while training with England on 4 June, putting him out of the World Cup.

"Rio is probably around six weeks away from playing," Ferguson told the Manchester United website.

It means the defender is doubtful for England's Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland in September.

It was initially hoped that Ferdinand would be fit for Manchester United's opening Premier League game against Newcastle on 16 August.

606: DEBATE
Rio is a crock. Constantly injured and makes silly mistakes. He is in the twilight of his career

the guy who declined to comment
However, the latest prognosis means he is likely to miss two further league games, away at Fulham on 22 August and the game against West Ham at Old Trafford on 28 August.

Ferdinand suffered his injury in a collision with team-mate Emile Heskey during England's first training session in Rustenburg as they prepared for the World Cup in South Africa.

The injury was a devastating end to what had been a disappointing season for Ferdinand, who was restricted to only 13 Premier League starts for United and 21 appearances overall because of a back injury.

I heard knee snap - Ferdinand on his injury before the World Cup
He will definitely miss England's first post-World Cup friendly against Hungary on 11 August and manager Fabio Capello is unlikely to risk him against Bulgaria and Switzerland on 3 and 7 September unless he has seen competitive action for his club before then.

In more positive news for United, meanwhile, right-back Gary Neville and winger Antonio Valencia have returned to full training following a calf injuries.

However, striker Michael Owen (hamstring) has yet to resume training and midfielder Anderson is due to return in late September from the cruciate ligament injury he suffered in February.

With the rest of the squad returning to England following their pre-season tour of the United States, midfielder Owen Hargreaves has remained behind to continue treatment after a recurrence of his long-standing tendinitis problem.

Evergreen Ryan Giggs has extended his illustrious career by another 12 months after signing a new contract with Manchester United.

The former Wales international previously indicated his wish to continue his career into a remarkable 21st season.

The news that United fans wanted to hear arrived on Friday when it was confirmed that Giggs had put pen-to-paper on a one-year deal.

Giggs has played in every Premier League season having burst onto the scene against Everton at Old Trafford in March 1991.

The 37-year-old has been a regular in United's side ever since, amassing an incredible 11 Premier League titles with the English giants.

Lucky
"All I've ever wanted to do is play for United and I've been lucky enough to do that for 20 years," he told the club's official website.

"It is great to know I'm still contributing to the team's success and I feel I've got a lot to offer on and off the pitch.

"This is an exciting time to be involved with so many good young players coming through."

Special
United's long-serving manager Sir Alex Ferguson was full of praise for the veteran, claiming the midfielder is a 'special person' to have his longevity.

"You run out of words to describe Ryan Giggs," explained Ferguson. "He is a marvellous player and a wonderful man.

"To have the desire and the ability to play at the top level in such a physically demanding position at his age requires a special person.

"He is still turning in man of the match performances and his experience is so vital for the younger players in the squad."

:worship: RYAN GIGGS, what a humble and class act!, marvellous player and he is very professional, humble and works very hard for his team and helps younger players to develop.

Shame there is no loyalty around like Giggsy has shown for the last 20+ years and it will be sad when he does hang up those boots eventually but a spectacular end to an illustrious career:cool:.

Rio Ferdinand is the latest big-name Manchester United player to heap praise on retired team-mate Gary Neville.

The veteran right-back quit the game earlier this month and has already started working with United's academy players in an effort to complete his coaching badges.

Neville acquired the reputation of being a militant presence in the dressing room and once advocated strike action over Ferdinand's omission from the England squad .
This was after it was revealed the centre-half had failed to turn up to a drugs testing session which ultimately saw him landed with an eight-month ban.

However, Ferdinand has seen a different side to Neville and says he will be missed around Old Trafford.

'Gary was tremendous,' said Ferdinand. 'He had great determination and drive and could deliver fantastic crosses.

'I remember the first time I joined up with an England squad, Gary would be doing his own stretches whilst the manager was talking to the players before training.

'People used to take the Mickey out of him for that. But it just shows you the length he would go to in order to maximise his potential.

'That sort of behaviour earned him a reputation as somebody who was very serious. But he was a really funny bloke and we will miss him in the dressing room

Ferdinand seems unlikely to be in United's side to face non-league Crawley in the FA Cup fifth round at Old Trafford tomorrow.

He has not featured since injuring his groin in the warm-up ahead of United's defeat at Wolves a fortnight ago.
Although with a Champions League trip to Marseille looming next Wednesday, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson would hope the 32-year-old is not sidelined any longer.

Changes are anticipated, with goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard hopeful of making his Old Trafford bow.

Some interesting statistics in this article:devil:.

It is perhaps one of football’s most popular myths that Manchester United get help from referees, in the form of anything from the rub of the green to outright corruption. Not only will it be referenced several times throughout the season by rival fans, it has actually entered the mainstream media, with phrases like “you don’t get them at Old Trafford”, “if that was down the other end it was a pen” and “Fergie time” entering the common parlance of footballing punditry. But does it have any basis, either today, or historically, or both? The statistics would suggest neither.

This season, topping the league by four points after 27 games, through to the last 16 in Europe and the last eight in the FA Cup, Manchester United have been awarded 5 penalties in total – at Old Trafford against Liverpool in the FA Cup, at Old Trafford against Arsenal and West Ham in the Premier League and away at Fulham and Rangers in the Premier League and Champions League respectively. Three out of the five penalties were converted, meaning just 3.8% (3/80) of United’s goals have come from penalties this season. Of these penalties, just one, Dimitar Berbatov’s against Liverpool can be said to have been a dubious award.

Of United’s rivals, Arsenal have received a staggering 14 penalties, several dubious thanks mainly to the antics of Marouane Chamakh, almost three times as many as United. 10 of these were converted, meaning 11.8% (10/85) of Arsenal’s goals have come from penalty kicks. Chelsea have been awarded 9, converting 7, for a percentage of 9.5% (7/74). Manchester City have a very similar record to the Blues, having received 9 penalties and converting 7 for a percentage of 9.3% (7/75). Liverpool meanwhile have been awarded 8 penalties, converting 6 for a percentage of 11.8% (6/51).

To summarise the penalty statistics of 2010-11:

* Arsenal – awarded 14, converted 11, 11.8% of goals have been penalties
* Liverpool – awarded 8, converted 6, 11.8% of goals have been penalties
* Chelsea – awarded 9, converted 7, 9.5% of goals have been penalties
* Manchester City – awarded 9, converted 7, 9.3% of goals have been penalties
* Manchester United – awarded 5, converted 3, 3.8% of goals have been penalties

As you can see, the statistics are fairly staggering, especially to those propogating that United are the most favoured by referees. Arsenal have been awarded almost three times as many penalties as United, with the rest a little less than twice as many. Even more interestingly, using penalties converted as a percentage of goals scored – useful as it determines both how helpful penalty awards have been and allowing more leeway for more attacking teams possibly receiving more penalties – penalties have accounted for much significantly less of the goals Manchester United have scored in comparison to their rivals. Rounding off, penalties have accounted for 12%, 12%, 10% and 9% of Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City goals, but just 4% of Manchester United’s.

“Fine”, you say. “So United are having a bad year with penalties. But I’ve heard and seen them given enough penalties over the years to know that they’ve been favoured in this department.” Do the statistics back this up?

Again, no.

As of the turn of the year, the following were the figures for the top 10 teams in terms of converted penalty kicks in the Premier League since 2003, when such statistics started being kept:

* Liverpool – 36
* Arsenal – 35
* Chelsea – 29
* Aston Villa – 27
* Fulham – 24
* Tottenham – 23
* Manchester United – 23
* Blackburn – 22
* Man City – 22
* Everton – 21

As you can see, despite generally being the most attacking team in the league, Manchester United have scored significantly less penalties than their three main rivals of this period – Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea. They’ve even scored less than Aston Villa, Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur. Penalties accounted for 5.1% of United’s total goals, with the equivalent figures for Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea being 9.1%, 7.5% and 6.6%.

United conceded 13 penalties in this period – broadly similar to Arsenal’s 17, Liverpool’s 15 and Chelsea’s 12. Penalties accounted for 7.2% of goals conceded by United, in comparison to 7.4% for Liverpool and 8.1% each for Chelsea and Arsenal.

If we compare the percentage of penalties as a total of goals scored and conceded, United (5.1% scored, 7.2% conceded, -2.1%) come out worse than Liverpool (9.1% scored, 7.4% conceded, + 1.7%), Arsenal (7.5% scored, 8.1% conceded, -0.6%) and Chelsea (6.6% scored, 8.1% conceded, -1.5%).

In fact, of the four major teams, only Liverpool have benefited from penalties since 2003, ironic considering they have been most vociferous in their complaints against United. I have also stumbled across statistics for these two clubs alone since 1999, which show that Liverpool have been awarded 53 penalties to United’s 46.

Since the Premier League began, Manchester United have been awarded 88 penalties – just 4.7 per season. They have converted 66, meaning just 4.7% (66/1415) of United’s goals since 1992 in the league have come from penalties. Comparing this 4.7% to this year’s figures of Arsenal (11.8%), Liverpool (11.8%), Chelsea (9.5%) and City City (9.3%), we can conclude that Manchester United have benefited very little from penalties since the inception of the Premier League, and certainly less than their rivals.

Now that the penalty myth regarding United has been disproven, I shall move onto general decision-making. This is harder to pinpoint, conveniently relying on strictly anecdotal evidence. However, we can discuss this in relation to the current season. I have heard several times that United are lucky to be top of the league because Gary Neville should have been sent off away to Stoke and West Brom, with a penalty that should have been rewarded as well in relation to the incident at West Brom.

Whilst this is true in terms of the West Brom case, what’s forgotten is that United should have had a penalty kick in that match as well, for a stonewall handball arising from a Fábio cross. Neville was regarded as lucky to stay on the pitch against Stoke as well, but what is forgotten in this instance is that his first yellow was incorrectly awarded, after he won the ball. The referee perhaps realised this given the severity of the United protests, and thus gave the benefit of the doubt for the second decision.

Of course, incidents like Lee Bowyer’s last-gasp equaliser against United, where four separate infringements occurred – two counts of climbing, a handball and an offside – are largely ignored and instantly forgotten.

Also forgotten are the incidents last season which it could certainly be argued cost United a record four-in-a-row – John Terry’s winner at Stamford Bridge where an offside Didier Drogba dragged Wes Brown to the ground allowing the ball to reach Terry, and Drogba’s winner at Old Trafford when he was about two yards offside.

I ask those crying corruption and conspiracy to show when refereeing decisions gave United as much towards winning a league than they gave towards losing it last season.

Refereeing decisions have also hurt United in the Champions League. Ferguson’s men were cruising through against Bayern last season until Rafael was booked twice for two challenges and sent off – the first foul occurring 2 seconds after a foul on Rafael went unnoticed. In 2003, a Paul Scholes goal was disallowed for offside when he was quite clearly onside, which would have put United two goals clear. Porto equalised in the last minute, going through on away goals and subsequently winning the competition.

In the Carling Cup last season, Manchester City were incorrectly awarded a penalty for a foul outside the box. Carlos Tévez scored it, but Manchester United went on to win the tie. So whilst City supporters still moan about the injury time awarded at Old Trafford in the league allowing Michael Owen to score the winner, the penalty incident in the Carling Cup has already been forgotten. Why? Because United didn’t allow it to affect them, forgot it, and got on with the job in hand – winning the tie. This in part explains why refereeing decisions involving United are only remembered when they don’t favour the opposition, United usually go on to win the game.

One of the most commonly used inferences that referees favour United comes in the form of ‘Fergie Time’, or seemingly larger amounts of injury time played when United are not winning. Proponents of this theory will mainly point to two instances – when 7 minutes of injury time were played against Sheffield Wednesday in 1993 during which United scored twice and won 2-1, and the aforementioned incident when United scored 88 seconds after the 4 minutes of injury time that was announced against Manchester City in 2009. Ignoring the fact that that’s two instances in 16 years, both amounts of injury time were perfectly correct. In the Sheffield United game, the referee had to be replaced after suffering an injury, with the treatment and subsequent replacement lasting about 5 minutes, this on top of the usual injuries and substitutions.

In the Manchester derby, whilst (a minimum of) 4 minutes was announced, Manchester City scored after the time was awarded, and their subsequent celebration and the introduction of Michael Carrick to the game meant that the time awarded was absolutely correct. I would suggest the same not to be correct about the 5 minutes West Brom received to find an equaliser in United’s 2-1 win at the Hawthorns this season.

Success breeds jealousy, and jealousy breeds irrationality. Any inference that United are favoured by referees is incorrect. As I have shown, United receive significantly less benefit from penalties as their rivals, whilst the inevitable beneficial decisions are hyped and remembered whilst the inevitable disadvantageous decisions are forgotten in an instant. Them’s the breaks of being a team at the top. Liverpool supporters of a certain age should remember similar mutterings about Kenny Dalglish’s conquerers, the El Classico will tell you a similar tale from Spain, as will Bayern in Germany and the Old Firm in Scotland.

As long as they’re muttering dark words of conspiracy about United, Alex Ferguson can be content he’s doing a fine job. As Wilde once said “the only thing worst than being talked about, is not being talked about

Not surprised United lost at Chelsea, our record is ****e there and although I agreed with Vidic being sent off that penalty wasn't.

I agreed with Fergie's comments about Martin Atkinson too, feared the worst when it was announced he was referring the game as he had that controversial incident last season which ended up going against us and now Fergie has been punished, the FA are going to keep punishing us now to keep those complaining about bias quiet;).

Liverpool next away, this is their cup final and they will want to win to try and damage our title bid and close in on 5th place but I would so love it if United win to prevent that:devil:.

So after the disappointment of two losses on the run, we're back to winning ways. I was surprised at the initial line up especially in midfield but Fergie is a tactical genius and the Da Silvas on the wings worked, it don't matter about how attractive United play just as long as we get the job done and result.

Nice to see Valencia back from that horrific injury, he's been really missed:):). Scholes madness and brilliance again, lucky not to get sent off but this result is a psychological blow to Arsenal especially with one of their defenders getting injured.. hope he is OK:).

Valencia is fantastic player
First game back and he was United's best player I think
He is intelligent on the ball, calm, good passing, can go past a defender with ease and put great cross in. Scores fair few too.

LOL the NOTW claims that United is selling Rooney in the summer:laugh2:, what a bunch of nonsense because what was the point in Fergie going through all that rubbish regarding the transfer request etc then the player changing his mind and plus it would be a waste of big amounts of money because lets face it Fergie is a ruthless manager and isn't afraid to get rid of some big players...

What a comeback:). United were rubbish in the first half, defensive work was a shambles and the first penalty decision was fair but the second one just looked outside the box and even a Liverpool player (who is a commentator now trying to be fair of course:p) said that the exact same thing:shocked:.

Second half the United players dug in and Rooney scored the 3 goals but overall Valencia was MOTM for me because his delivery is brilliant, he creates chances and is a team player. Hernandez shows his quality again and can only improve.

United finally win at Stamford Bridge for the first time since 2002:). I'm pleased with the result, despite Evra getting lucky at the end, should have been a penalty for Chelski but it's swing and roundabouts in terms of decisions.

Carrick great performance through the whole match, Rooney and Giggs plus Ferdinand and Vidic at the back stood out, however all the team did their jobs..

Ha Ha Go Sir Alex!:D:joker:.

'Everyone has an opinion today,' said Ferguson. 'There is an issue in the modern world of a need to be noticed.

'There is a wee guy, sitting down there in the Midlands, probably never been recognised in his life, managed to elevate himself to whatever it is in the police force.

'Have you ever seen Wolverhampton on a Saturday night? Do police ever arrest anyone for swearing on a Saturday night? Dearie me. That is a good one.'

His response to this...

Wayne Rooney would have been locked up if he had shown such "ridiculous aggression" on a night out as he did on the pitch, a senior police officer has said.

Superintendent Mark Payne, responsible for managing responses to crime and operations in Wolverhampton, said his officers would face more Rooneys in the city centre this weekend and "no doubt somebody will be injured in some meaningless fight".

The Manchester United and England striker must serve a two-match suspension for his four-letter outburst to TV cameras at West Ham on Saturday.

"If Rooney had behaved like that in Wolverhampton on Saturday night, I would have expected my officers to lock him up," Mr Payne said.

"People in positions of influence have an obligation to behave like human beings. It is not a lot to ask."

Writing on his blog on policing, Mr Payne went on: "I have seen a thousand Rooneys, and I am sure most police officers will have.

"The same aggressive stance, the bulging eyes, the foul-mouthed rant, fists clenched, surrounded by his mates, all cheering him on.

"I have seen this on Friday and Saturday nights, as young men (and more often young ladies) engage in a 'good night out'.

"I have seen people argue over almost every kind of nonsense you could imagine. 'He stole my place in the taxi queue', 'he looked at my girlfriend', 'he is from the wrong estate', 'I didn't like the look of him'."

The senior officer with the UK's second largest force added that while Rooney had "offered some form of apology", "what he won't be able to do is alter the impression that he has left in the eyes of the watching youngsters".

"It is OK to insult and abuse, it is OK to react with ridiculous aggression to perceived slights or provocation, it is excusable because it is the heat of the moment," he said.

"My officers will face more Rooneys over the weekend, no doubt somebody will be injured in some meaningless fight. An officer will have to go and tell a parent that their son or daughter is in hospital as a result."

we need to buy a right back

don't like if we play centre backs at right back because its bad for balance of team

so lets offer Inter about 45 million for Sneijder and Maicon  maybe even offer a squad player in the deal too

Nani MOTM;).

Overall a great team performance and young players like David De Gea, Phil Jones, Danny Welbeck, Chris Smalling, Anderson and Tom Cleverley are looking promising for the future:).

So glad to have beaten them and excited for the new season but it will be tough!

While I rate Cleverly highly, don't think he should get an England call up after a friendly and a season struggling with Wigan even if he had a decent season there IMO

Carrick and Wilshere have dropped out because of injury, guess that Cleverley has been called up to replace them. I think Capello must have been seen how impressive he was through all of United's pre season but I do agree that he did struggle at times at Wigan last season.

Glad that Fabio is giving some more younger talent time to shine, shame he hasn't called up Albrighton yet:(.

A teenage Carlisle United soccer prodigy is today set to make a dream move to Premier League champions Manchester United.

The News & Star can reveal that the Old Trafford giants have struck a deal with Carlisle United to sign 14-year-old goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

The Whitehaven-based youngster has been with the Blues’ centre of excellence set-up and is regarded as a star of the future by coaches.

His impressive performances with the Blues’ age-group teams attracted the attention of a host of top clubs, with Chelsea and Newcastle among Henderson’s admirers.

But Manchester United, who yesterday beat rivals Manchester City 3-2 to win the Community Shield at Wembley, are understood to have agreed a compensation package with Carlisle on Friday.

Henderson, who is also being monitored by England youth coaches, is now expected to sign for Sir Alex Ferguson’s club this week.

The St Benedict’s School youngster, who was identified by Carlisle’s football in the community coaches at a soccer school in Whitehaven, will now join one of the most famous youth set-ups in world football

The Manchester United academy, which has produced a stream of Premier League and international stars, is headed by former Red Devils striker Brian McClair.

Pissed off that some journalists/fans are writing off David De Gea already after yesterday, of course filling VDS boots was always going to be tough but he's only 20 and it was a risk signing him but of course he is going to make mistakes due to his age but he can only learn from them and improve:bored:.

The United defence was to blame too for both goals, he may struggle with communication due to his lack of English but he's apparently learning so the communication will come in time.

Inter Milan's Wesley Sneijder has said he would like to join Manchester United and that "unofficial talks" have taken place with the league champions.

The 27-year-old midfielder has been linked with a move to Old Trafford during the summer and recently said he could be sold at the "right amount".

Asked if he was keen to move, Sneijder told www.nos.nl: "Yes, but United haven't made an official approach yet.

Hope we get him

Nani joy at best game ever:).

Manchester United winger Nani believes his man-of-the-match performance in Sunday's Community Shield win over City was his best ever.

The Portugal international capped off a fine team move to make it 2-2 in the 58th minute before racing clear to claim a stoppage-time winner.

That went some way to avenging United's FA Cup semi-final defeat by City last season, although the Red Devils' derby rivals are hoping to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

But speaking after he came off the bench in his country's 5-0 win over Luxembourg on Wednesday, Nani explained he is eager to help steer United to a successful title defence.

"I think [the Community Shield] was fantastic because it is always a big derby," he told RTPN. "We were losing 2-0 but we came back to get the result.

Memorable

"We played an excellent game and I scored two goals. I'll always remember that second half.

"I came out of there very happy and I think that was my best game ever because it was a final and because it gave us a trophy.

"I am working to be the best Nani for the team this season and Sir Alex Ferguson congratulated me after the match.

"I always give my best, I'm fine and I want to stay that way until the end of the season."

Nani has been linked with a move to Italy all summer, with the likes of Inter Milan and Juventus reported to be interested.

But the 24-year-old insists he is not looking to leave Old Trafford, saying the fact he is settled at United is enabling him to fulfil his potential.

"I am very well there," he said. "I think it's the best club in the world and want to stay there and work well.

"It's good to know that big clubs are interested in me but, right now, I'm very satisfied with my club and I want to continue with them."

Delighted United won:):D.

Bad news is that Rafael is out for 10 weeks, Rio Ferdinand out for 6 weeks and Nemanja Vidic is out for possibly 2 weeks (might be 1). Enough defensive cover though.

Press calling David De Gea a flop already:rolleyes:, admit he made some mistakes but he made a few good saves too.

He's 20 years old and will improve, he's moved to another country and doesn't know the language but is slowly learning. He needs time so some of the criticism already is harsh on the poor guy, too much expectations from some fans/journalists already! I have absolute confidence in this buy from SAF and he'll prove people wrong.

Fergie really ****ed up with De Gea the pressure on De Gea is just ridiculous he is only 20 cannot speak the language and has been brought in to replace the best keeper in Europe of the last 5 years. Fergie should have bought someone along the lines of Given and gradually brought De Gea into it , instead he has just thrown him into the deep end

Paddy is still a top defender but for a while his performances haven't been as consistent as they should be. He seems better more attacking then defending but needs to work on the defensive side of his game more to cut it out.

He also plays a lot of games for United and is on of the oldest as we're trusting some of the young players in games and Evra has got tired. Fabio when back from injury will give him competition and he'll have to compete for his place.
