Birmingham City Boss Alex McLeish Offers Sympathy To Arsene Wenger
The Blues boss thinks that what happened to the Frenchman at Old Trafford yesterday was out of order...

Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish has echoed the views of many of his colleagues in the game, and condemned the treatment to which Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was subjected to at the end of his side's defeat at Manchester United yesterday.

Wenger kicked a water bottle in frustration at an offside decision at the end of the game which denied his team a late equaliser, and for that show of petulance was sent to the stands by the referee and the fourth official.

This led to a somewhat ridiculous situation in which Wenger did not appear to have anywhere to go, and ended up standing awkwardly in front of an excited section of the home support, who were enthusiastically mocking him.

"What he was subjected to there was absolutely ridiculous," McLeish told Sky Sports. "No manager should be subjected to that treatment.

"He's going into a baying crowd as well and they're taunting him.

"It's so difficult to keep your emotions in check at the best of times in football. Kicking a bottle of water is trivial. It's just trivial in the grand scheme of things. It's emotions."

Wenger will return to Manchester soon, immediately after the international break, when his Gunners travel to Eastlands to face United's rivals Manchester City.

Man Utd need 2 more big players.. Next transfer window maybe.

Next summer would be silly to buy players that are in the world Cup.. Many play ok and become overpriced!

I remember Owen's price tag shooting up after France 98, plus plenty after Japan/Korea 2002.

Yeah that's the player, Aquillani... Best sickie he ever pulled!

If Liverpool was put on the market it would get plenty of super rich wanting to throw millions at the club!

They want to buy Liverpool not clubs like Man City and Portsmouth.. Plus Liverpool is know worldwide and much loved!

FFS! Dam them two yanks.

Tottenham are launching a bid for Portsmouth pair David James and Niko Kranjcar.

The Daily Mail says Tottenham reacted to the loss of Luka Modric by launching a joint £8million bid for Portsmouth midfielder Kranjcar and goalkeeper James on Sunday night.

Harry Redknapp is desperate not to lose momentum after a sparkling start of four Barclays Premier League wins. But Modric faces at least six weeks out with a fractured fibula in his right leg following a tackle by Birmingham's Lee Bowyer.

Spurs will have their usual hectic run-down to the closing of the transfer window on Tuesday at 5pm.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has launched a scathing attack on one Manchester United player after defeat on Saturday.

"I have seen today a player who plays on the pitch only to make fouls," he said.

"For me, this is a point that is more urgent than diving. The players who are never punished. Who get out of the game without a yellow card. I think it is more anti-football than a player who did what Eduardo did."

Wenger smiled when asked if he was referring to Darren Fletcher.

"Why do you say the name?" he said, refusing to elaborate further.

But he was incensed that his players collected six bookings to United's three and, while the champions were awarded a penalty in their 2-1 victory, his side had their claims ignored when Fletcher brought down Andrey Arshavin in the box.

"I don't know why it is," he said. "You should ask the referees. Look at how many deliberate fouls some players get away with. That's a bigger problem because it cuts the flow of the game. And people pay to see football, not free-kicks."

"I think it is a good decision for me to go back to Ukraine, my home country where I started my career and to finish there," he told chelseafc.com.

"I always tried my best for Chelsea and it is only my decision to leave because I want to play regularly in games. I thank the club and Roman Abramovich very much, and everybody who has worked at the club and the players, I have many good friends here and a very good relationship with them and Carlo Ancelotti.

"I have big respect for him, he is not like a manager but a friend and he understands my decision, it is best for me.

"I feel when I played for Chelsea I received big support from the fans. I will remember for all my life this club and I hope I can come to the stadium and say "goodbye" to the fans, I want to send a message to thank them for their support and to enjoy their football and watching their team, I send my best thoughts for the team and hope that Chelsea wins many titles."

Recently, Beckham’s relationship with the Galaxy fans has been somewhat strained but after netting the only goal to give his side three important points, some pressure has been lifted.

Schalke tried to land the USA winger on loan in January and Gers would be willing to discuss a deal to allow Beasley to leave.

Liverpool Have Just £1.5m to Spend: Are the Americans Bleeding the Club Dry?

Rafa Benitez has been left devastated after being told he has just £1.5million to spend by his club’s American owners.

The Liverpool manager has struggled against budget constraints all summer because of the financial crisis at Anfield, and revealed a week ago he was in talks to try and extend his kitty.

Benitez wants a centre half to provide cover in a crucial position, with Daniel Agger suffering from a back problem, and he also would love to sign a wide player who can also operate as a stand in striker.

But after talks with the Yanks, he has been told there is only a miserly sum available – which will not even buy one player, never mind the two he desires.

It has left the Liverpool searching frantically around for a loan signing before the transfer window closes at the end of August, and he has sounded out several targets.

That loan period was up in June, but with the Bernabeu side signing Valencia centre half Raul Albiol in the summer they have no room in the squad for Garay and will consider another loan.

If this is accurate then It just goes to show what we as Liverpool fans should expect from the Yanks. Many believe that Messrs Gillett and Hicks will bleed the club dry and then leave, and if recent evidence is anything to go by, then that looks more and more likely.

This season we have spent around £15.5m outright, because the majority of the Alberto Aquilani fee is held over dependent on other factors and a large chunk of the Glen Johnson fee was paid by the money Portsmouth still owed us. However we have recouped around £35m from the sales of Alonso. Arbeloa, Anderson and Leto, we have also removed Jermaine Pennant’s hefty wage from our outgoings, so how the hell do we have no money?

Last season we may have spent around £10m more than we sold, but that’s by no means a kings ransom and pales into insignificance when compared to any other Premier League club, hell Stoke City spend £15m more than they sold last season!

A club of the size and stature and marketability as Liverpool shouldn’t be in this mess. I am not suggesting that the club should be up there with Chelsea and Man City but I do expect them to have a pot to piss in!

A report from England claims that Portsmouth are on the verge of landing Manchester City defender Tal Ben Haim.

Benjani's move from Manchester City to Hull has been cancelled after the player failed to agree personal terms with the Tigers.

Top 5 transfers of the summer;

1) Cristiano Ronaldo
Man United to Real Madrid

2) Ricardo Kaka
AC Milan to Real Madrid

3) Samuel Eto'o
FC Barcelona to Internazionale FC

4) Xabi Alonso
Liverpool FC to Real Madrid

5) Thomas Vermaelen
AFC Ajax to Arsenal FC

According to the Daily Mail...maybe a bit premature but even so, I wouldn't have an 80M transfer at the top...half of the list are Madrid transfers as well. Inter getting Eto'o for about 20M is an absolute steal though. And look where Tommy Vermaelen is! :thumbs2: Only a few games in but he's looked a class act so far.

1) Cristiano Ronaldo
Man United to Real Madrid - Overpriced

2) Ricardo Kaka
AC Milan to Real Madrid - Overpriced

3) Samuel Eto'o
FC Barcelona to Internazionale FC - Should be Top, Inter got Eto'o and 40m!

4) Xabi Alonso
Liverpool FC to Real Madrid - Overpriced

5) Thomas Vermaelen
AFC Ajax to Arsenal FC - Should be second, great signing.

I would say.. Owen to united on a free is a great transfer aswell.

I am looking forward to transfer deadline day tomorrow :hello:

I remember January TDD, epic viewing.

Andrei Arshavin on the phone outside in the show out side his hotel..

Wasn't sure weather he was gunna sign or not and he did

That was quality... i think it was best because it was extended and finalised deals could be completed after.

That was the day with all the snow storms wasn't it :joker:

Can remember them showing that clip of Arshavin on the phone all day long

Yeah its frustrating when we dominate a game and have so many shots on goal yet score like 1 or none. Remember that game aginst west ham a couple seasons ago? we had about 50 shots on goal, hit the post three times, and green had the game of his life. West ham pump the ball up field and score with their first chance, and end up winning 1-0. :laugh3:

simple solution
buy a goalscorer

Johann
01-09-2009, 02:34 AM
It's not a case of buying goalscorers because we have players who can score - its just that sometimes we tend to overplay and make the extra pass instead of shooting. And sometimes we just have bad luck. Anyway the example I gave was 3 seasons ago and we've gotten more clinical in front of goal since then.

Arsenal have come to the defence of striker Eduardo da Silva ahead of his disciplinary hearing.

The Croatian international has been charged with ‘deceiving the referee’ after a fall earned his side a penalty in last Wednesday’s Champions League qualifier against Celtic at Emriates Stadium.

The Gunners have submitted a 19-page defence to the charges which UEFA described as ‘grossly unsporting’.

A fax received by Arsenal from UEFA general inspector Gerhard Kapl outlined that Eduardo "succeeded in deceiving the referee, who was influenced by the player's gross unsporting behaviour".

It added: "There are no exceptional circumstances that would justify a plea for mercy."

If found guilty, Eduardo faces a two-match European ban but it seems the Gunners will do everything they can to not allow that sanction to be imposed.

Suppose it's worth a shot, even though we will be shot back down by the gimps at UEFA.

Manchester City are believed to be hot on the heels of Tottenham winger David Bentley.

Cashed-up City are prepared to part with £15million for the England international, making a move away from White Hart Lane imminent after just one year there.

With Spurs boss Harry Redknapp close to signing Martin Petrov for £5million from City, it seems a deal for Bentley is increasingly likely.

Everton, Aston Villa and Sunderland are also interested in Bentley but Eastlands looks his likely destination if a deal can be done.

Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill hopes to bolster his defence by signing Richard Dunne from Manchester City and James Collins from West Ham before the transfer window closes.

Both players have been linked with moves for the past week or so and it seems as though Dunne deal is the closest to being completed with the player agreeing to a three-year deal for a fee of £6million.

Villa are prepared to pay West Ham £5million for Welshman Collins as O’Neill is intent on strengthening his defence after recent departures and the retirement of skipper Martin Laursen.

Atletico Madrid defender Johnny Heitinga has agreed to compromise his wage demands in order to secure a move to Everton.

The 25-year old Holland international would have become Everton’s highest paid player if his demands of almost £80,000 per week were agreed to, but after talks involving Toffees officials and Heitinga’s management, a more reasonable sum has been negotiated.

The former Ajax man is expected to undergo a medical on Tuesday and should complete the move before the 5pm transfer deadline.

Harry Redknapp is prepared to offer Portsmouth goalkeeper a long-term deal to lure him to Tottenham.

The Spurs boss is keen on James who is determined to leave Fratton Park in order to bolster his World Cup chances with the England team.

It is understood that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is concerned about signing a 39-year old but Redknapp is attempting to talk him into signing James on a two-year deal with the chance of a coaching job afterwards.

The fact that Spurs already have Heurelho Gomes and Carlo Cudicini on the books as goalkeepers may make it hard for Levy to say yes to a move but Redknapp seems determined to get his man.

Notts County are set to launch a last-minute bid for out of favour Manchester City striker Benjani.

The League Two club, led by sporting director Sven-Goran Eriksson, have already clinched the signing of Sol Campbell and now still have their sights set high.

Benjani signed for Eriksson when he was managing City in January 2008 but due to injury and incoming stars, has dropped down the pecking order under Mark Hughes.

A deal involving Benjani and Hull City recently broke down allowing Notts County to swoop and make the Zimbabwean their highest paid player.

The hefty price tag Spurs have put on Pavlyuchenko’s head has made Spartak reluctant, hence the idea of a loan deal.

"And also there is Cristiano (Ronaldo), who is a great friend."

Bolt saw Real defeat Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday and added: "It was a nice game and competitive, the one I most liked was Lass, who scored one goal and looks a bit like me when I play!"
