Croatia FA chiefs have cried conspiracy over Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric's broken leg injury suffered against Birmingham City.

Croatia FA president Vlatko Markovic made the shocking allegation in the wake of Tottenham's Modric suffering a broken leg at the weekend.

"What's happening to us is terrible," Markovic told the Daily Mail. "I don't know whether somebody has got something against us. Modric is our most important player and we are very depleted without him in our side.

"Right now I think that somebody has done it intentionally."

The Tottenham star misses England's World Cup qualifier against Croatia tomorrow week as a result of the injury caused by Lee Bowyer's challenge.

Markovic added: "Last year they injured Eduardo and now it is Modric. At the end of the day I can only ask myself whether it is a coincidence or not."

Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has backed Bulgaria teammate Martin Petrov to quit Manchester City for Tottenham.

Petrov spent last night in a London hotel and his move to Spurs was backed by Manchester United forward Berbatov, his Bulgaria team-mate.

"I hope Martin goes to Spurs," said the ex-Tottenham star.

"He does not deserve such a relationship with Manchester City and Spurs are a bigger club than City."

Manchester City are launching a shock bid for Tottenham winger David Bentley.

The Daily Mail says Bentley is set to be handed the golden ticket of a move to Manchester City, who last night closed in on a swap deal with Tottenham involving Bulgaria winger Martin Petrov.

The initial deal for Bentley will be a long-term loan, but it presents the chance for him to restart his career after a dismal 13-month spell at Spurs, who are also signing Niko Kranjcar from Portsmouth for a cut-price £2million.

If the Bentley deal can be completed before today’s 5pm deadline — and both managers want the deal to happen — then he will be reunited with Mark Hughes, the boss behind his most productive spell at Blackburn.

England youth winger Alex Henshall is a target for Everton.

The Daily Mirror says Everton boss David Moyes has set up a surprise swoop for Henshall - as well as plotting new faces for his first team.

Moyes is in the lead to land the 16-year-old sensation from Swindon. Henshall dazzled in the recent prestigious Milk Cup tournament in Ireland and shone against the Goodison kids in one game.

Left winger Henshall, who has broken into the England ranks despite playing for a lower league outfit, has also been hunted by Manchester United and Chelsea.

But Everton have moved in first and hope that Henshall signs this week, with the fee to be decided by a compensation tribunal panel.

Robinho may struggle for regular action at Manchester City this season.

The Daily Mail says dropped for the game at Portsmouth on Sunday after a poor showing at Crystal Palace in the Carling Cup, Robinho was replaced by the energy and endeavour of Craig Bellamy. It was the right choice.

Such is the size of City's squad now - and it will get bigger in January - it is feasible that Robinho could be used as an impact player; the right player for the right game. Certainly he will start against Arsenal a week on Saturday.

By all accounts his attitude this season has been much improved, due in no small part to the sale of soul-mate and anti-Hughes agitator Elano. He has also gone on record as saying that he will thrive this term now that the spotlight is not only on him.

If he really means that than Hughes could get the best out of him. It does, however, seem rather unlikely that a world star Robinho will revel in the role of bit-part player.

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce hopes to offload no less than NINE players today!

The Daily Mail says Portsmouth are interested in Nyron Nosworthy, while Danny Collins is poised to join Stoke for £3.5m.

David Healy’s loan move to Coventry hit a hitch, the player wanting a permanent deal. Carlos Edwards and Grant Leadbitter are set to join Ipswich for a combined £2.8m — rising to £4m.

Phil Bardsley, Daryl Murphy and Roy O’Donovan have been the subject of enquiries.

Birmingham expect to land Teemu Tainio.

West Ham United hope to close an agreement for Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh today.

Clever negotiating by chief executive Scott Duxbury means a cut-price downpayment will secure the deal, but first West Ham have to sell.

Birmingham City are favourites to land free agent Peter Lovenkrands.

The Daily Mail says Lovenkrands, 29, who has experience playing under Birmingham boss Alex McLeish at Rangers, is a free agent after leaving Newcastle United at the end of last season.

Newcastle are keen to re-sign the Danish international but Birmingham are now the favourites for his signature.

During his time in Scotland, Lovenkrands won two SPL titles, three Scottish League Cups and one Scottish Cup.

He also played in the Rangers side that reached the last 16 of the Champions League.

RANGERS were last night on the verge of completing a season-long loan deal for the experienced Paris Saint-Germain winger, Jerome Rothen.

Martin Bain, the Rangers chief executive, and the manager, Walter Smith moved quickly to open negotiations with the 31-year-old France internationalist after his proposed transfer to Schalke ’04 collapsed well into the final 24 hours of the transfer window.

The Herald understands that Celtic – Rothen had been offered to them too by his representatives – are also working hard to strengthen their squad before tonight’s 5pm deadline. Tony Mowbray did not fly to Canada with the team for their midweek *friendly against Benfica in Toronto and was instead exploring various signing options with his chief executive, Peter Lawwell.

If successful, Chris Killen will be allowed to join either Swansea City or Doncaster Rovers on loan. The Herald understands that Darren O’Dea will be offered a three-year contract extension and will reluctantly be allowed to join either Reading or Ipswich Town on a *season-long loan to satisfy the Republic of Ireland inter*nationalist’s craving for regular first-team football.

Rangers’ first piece of transfer activity this summer was the most significant and unexpected development ahead of this afternoon’s transfer window’s closure. He had been watched closely by Ran*gers in the Emirates Cup where the sides met last month.

Rothen had been *ostracised from the first team squad by the PSG manager, Toni Kom*bouare, after publicly criticis*ing the club. He had been linked with a £2m move to Blackburn Rovers and Saint-Etienne but Schalke ’04 emerged as favourites to sign him over the weekend. They pulled out a deal because of a lack of funds after a move for their full-back Rafinha to *Bayern Munich fell through.

Rothen is expected to fly to Glasgow today to undergo a medical and complete the terms of the loan arrangement. He played alongside the former Rangers striker, Dado Prso, in the 2004 final for Monaco, which they lost 3-0 to Jose Mourinho’s Porto in the AufSchalke Arena. He has won 26 caps for France and is a dead-ball specialist.

The signing of Rothen is the first piece of business conducted by Bain since the chairman, Sir David Murray, stood down.

His arrival is almost certain to spell the end for DaMarcus Beasley. The American has been told he will not be a prominent part of the title defence and is keen to leave to ensure his readiness for next year’s World Cup. His agent, Lyle Yorks, has cultivated interest from Spain, Greece and the Nether*lands but, as yet, Rangers have not received any firm offers. Olympiakos had been linked with a move after failing in their attempts to sign Morten Gamst Pedersen from Blackburn but the transfer window in Greece closed last night without Beasley moving. FC Twente, managed by the former England coach, Steve McClaren, are understood to be considering a move for the former PSV Eindhoven man.

The Herald understands Rangers had pondered a loan move for Real Madrid’s Dutch under-21 winger, Royston Drenthe, but were frightened off by his salary demands. Reports that they had been offered the Arsenal wunderkind, Jack Wilshere, are also wide of the mark.

0839: Is it just me, or is the gap between the Big Four and the rest of the Premier League closing all the time? I mean obviously Man City/Tottenham/Villa/Everton etc have aspirations to get into that top four, but with clubs like Sunderland and Stoke really strengthening over the summer, is the top flight changing shape before our very eyes?

Boro are expected to sell the misfiring Brazilian Afonso Alves to Qatari side Al-Sadd for about £7m today.

Birmingham owner David Gold has laughed off claims by the Croatian Football Federation that English players have deliberately injured their players.

Last year Arsenal striker Eduardo broke his leg against Birmingham and on Saturday Tottenham's Croatian playmaker Luka Modric suffered the same fate.

"To suggest it's a conspiracy, particularly by our club, is absolutely ridiculous," he told the BBC.

"I can't see an ounce of reality about it at all - I find it nonsensical."

Croatia had already ended England's chances of qualifying for the 2008 European Championship when a challenge by Birmingham's Martin Taylor broke Eduardo's leg and dislocated his ankle.

Rangers have signed Jerome Rothen from PSG on a year's loan with a view to a permanent deal.Rothen

It is understood that PSG had yesterday contacted Rangers asking to consider signing Rothen on loan. PSG knew Rangers had previousley expressed an interest, after Walter Smith asked about Rothen’s availability during the Emirates Cup in London.

Rothen is a skillful left winger and a free kick specialist, who has played for the French national team 13 times, scoring three goals. PSG manager Toni Kombouare has allowed him to leave after Rothen publicly criticised the club’s management team. He was expected to join Schalke but due to the end of the German transfer window, no deal was completed. Blackburn Rovers were also keen on him, but pulled out due to the £2 million transfer fee.
Rothen played in the 2004 European Cup final for Monaco alongside Dado Prso, when they lost 3-0 to Porto. He has played in France his whole career; starting at Caen, Troyes, Monaco and finally PSG.

Rangers were also linked with loan moves for Real Madrid’s Dutch U-21 star Royston Drenthe but were put off by his salary demands. Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere loan bid was just a rumour and there was no contact made by either club. The signing signals the end for DaMarcus Beasley who is keen to leave Ibrox.

Arsenal Should Sign Milan's Gennaro Gattuso - Ian Wright
The ex-Gunners man feels Gattuso is the player most needed at the Emirates...

Former Arsenal hitman Ian Wright believes Gunners manager Arsene Wenger should sign Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso to add some fighting qualities to the team in an attempt to save their title bid this season.

The Gunners lost 2-1 at the weekend to title rivals Manchester United following a hard-fought game at Old Trafford, and Wright doesn't feel Arsenal have the tenacious qualities to battle with the very best.

The former striker feels players who aren't afraid to stick their feet into the opposition are needed, and he has picked Gattuso as the one who would intimidate other sides with aggression.

"Arsenal need to sign someone like AC Milan's Gennaro Gattuso, an experienced, tough-tackling midfield enforcer who would not have allowed himself or his team-mates to be bullied by a player like United's Darren Fletcher," Wright told The Sun.

Landing Gattuso is unlikely, as he is tied to the San Siro-based club until 2011. In addition, Wenger's philosophy has always been to bring in youngsters, rather than players who are reaching the end of their careers.

We reckon he's unlikely to go anywhere today, unless one of the Premier League's early strugglers panics big time and decides to spend about £4m on a guy out of contract next summer. Unlikely.

Just read the whole article its a great read. And have some very valid reasons for it not to be given.

They need to enforace this rule, but they need to come up and say it will be enforced more now, as eduardo being singled out when you could name 50 players + who have dived in the last 6 months.. Makes it a bit unfair on him personally, especially with the hate he has recieved, if the scottish fifa people wern't twats this would be all over by now.

Former Portsmouth midfielder Niko Kranjcar admits he chose Tottenham ahead of Everton.

The Croatia midfielder made a transfer deadline day from Portsmouth to team up with Redknapp and ex-Pompey team-mates Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch and compatriots Luka Modric and Vedran Corluka.

Asked whether Everton had bid for him, the 25-year-old reportedly told Jutarnji List: "This is true.

"Everton is also a big club but, in the end, the tradition and greatness of Tottenham made the difference.

"I also knew manager Harry Redknapp, and Luka Modric and Vedran Corluka told me great things about the club."

Kranjcar has signed a four-year deal at White Hart Lane for a fee in the region of £2.5million.

LIVERPOOL manager Rafael Benitez could face a touchline ban and a hefty fine after being hauled in line by the Football Association for his outburst following the opening-day setback at Tottenham.

He has been charged with improper conduct for comments about referee Phil Dowd shortly after that 2-1 defeat at White Hart Lane.

Benitez was furious at Dowd’s refusal to award a late penalty for what he perceived to be a foul on Andriy Voronin by Benoit Assou-Ekotto, with Liverpool having another spot-kick shout turned down moments later when Fernando Torres struck a shot against Assou-Ekotto’s hand.

Liverpool had already won a penalty, converted by Steven Gerrard.

Benitez claimed it was “impossible” for his side to be given two penalties by Dowd and pulled a pair of spectacles from the inside pocket of his jacket in what is being viewed as a slight against Dowd’s character.

Anfield No2 Sammy Lee was sent off for becoming involved in a row with fourth official Stuart Attwell over the ‘penalty’. He also faces a charge of improper conduct.

The FA asked Benitez to explain his comments, but did not quiz him on claims that Attwell, 26, is too young to officiate at Premier League level.

Problem is it was 100% not a penalty.
Defender was "running his line" as people call it and it was shoulder to shoulder..
And torres kicking a ball against someones hand really hard is hardly a penalty either.

Understandable he was annoyed but he could now get a touchline ban for nothing.

The Belgian FA (KBVB) have handed Standard Liege midfielder Axel Witsel a hefty suspension after his red card in the 1-1 league draw against Anderlecht on Sunday.

The Belgian international received his marching orders after 24 minutes of play following a reckless challenge on Anderlecht defender Marcin Wasilowski.

The latter will be unavailable for at least twelve months due to the broken leg he sustained and Witsel is under heavy criticism as a result of his behaviour.

This was reason for the KBVB to ban Witsel from the football fields until 23 November, meaning that he will miss ten league matches and one cup game.

Witsel accepted the suspension without any further appeal and regretted the results of his action, pointing out that he never had the intention to hurt his opponent.

Aston Villa striker Marlon Harewood is set to join Newcastle on loan next week.

Hitman Harewood, 30, is desperate for a move after making just one Premier League start for Villa since joining in July 2007 from West Ham for £4million.

He saw a potential switch to top-flight Hull collapse on deadline day.

While a permanent transfer to Newcastle was called off when they re-signed free agent Peter Lovenkrands.

But Toon caretaker Chris Hughton wants to return for the striker when the Football League loan market re-opens next week.

And Harewood, close to fitness after a foot injury, is expected to join the relegated club on a three-month agreement to boost their promotion bid.
