The Premier League has sent a letter warning top-flight clubs to be vigilant about possible betting scams at academy level matches, BBC Sport understands.

The League's general secretary Mike Foster revealed that suspected overseas betting syndicates have been receiving details of matches on mobile phones.

In one case, a man challenged at an under-18 match admitted he was working for an organisation in Hong Kong.

The Premier League says it wants to stamp out illegal betting.

And it is asking clubs to look out for strangers who are constantly using mobile phones during play.

Liverpool are the club reported by Crewe over an alleged illegal approach to sign a player from their academy, BBC Radio Stoke understands.

Crewe's director of football Dario Gradi revealed on Monday his club had made the complaint and the player in question is 15-year-old Max Clayton.

Liverpool were linked with Clayton in February 2008 and were willing to pay a six-figure sum to take him to Anfield.

Liverpool told BBC Sport they had no comment to make.

Crewe rejected Liverpool's initial approach for Clayton, but Gradi says the teenager now wants to leave the League Two outfit.

He told the Daily Express: "Max has come in and told us that he wants to leave right now to join a big club.

"You worry financially for the clubs where the players are stolen from

Not very wise.

Italy are overrated; will be either Spain or Brazil I think - and if Argentina get through which they should then I wouldnt rule them out either. We will be there or thereabout as well.

Ex-Arsenal Star Freddie Ljungberg Addresses Premier League Rumours
Seattle Sounders' Swede has not ruled out England return...

Former Arsenal winger Freddie Ljungberg is under contract with the Seattle Sounders through the 2010 season, but has the rumour mill churning with a recent visit to London in which he reportedly met with representatives from the Emirates.

The 32-year-old has kept quiet about speculation that he is seeking an loan to the Premier League during the MLS off-season, and responded equivocally when pressed on the issue.

"I haven't decided what I want to do," he said.

Ljungberg has adapted well to the MLS, being named captain in the 2009 league all-star star game against Everton, and endeared himself to local press.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer wrote: "The marquee player for America's nouveau soccer sensation, Seattle Sounders FC, Ljungberg has been the perfect player, the perfect personality, exactly the right choice, to sell the game and sell this team to this city."

New Bordeaux deal for Chamakh will encourage Arsenal, West Ham
09.09.09 | tribalfootball.com

An new contract for Marouane Chamakh may make it easier for the striker to leave Bordeaux, it has been revealed.

Chamakh was priced out of moves to Arsenal and West Ham United in the summer, though both Premiership clubs are ready to try again in January.

Bordeaux intend to offer the Morocco international a new deal through to 2012, but it will include an affordable buyout clause should Chamakh still be determined to leave.

Arsenal's Fran Mérida sets his sights on a first-team place
Arsenal teenager Fran Mérida has set his sights on regular first-team football at the Emirates after revealing he turned down the chance of a loan move to Spain with Levante.

The 19-year-old Spain youth international joined Arsenal from Barcelona's academy in September 2005 - a move which proved controversial and resulted in legal action being taken against the player for compensation.

Since then, Mérida has looked to gain experience at Real Sociedad before returning to Arsenal and making his Premier League debut.

After impressing in the pre-season Emirates Cup and coming off the bench in the 4-1 win over Portsmouth last month, Mérida hopes this can be his breakthrough campaign and intends to repay the faith shown by manager Arsène Wenger.

"I am 100% staying," Mérida said. "It is true that I had an option to go out on loan. But I, the boss, my agent and my family decided that the best thing for me is to stay here. The boss told me he believes in me, and the only thing I can do now is prove it on the pitch and repay that faith.

"My target is to help as much as possible to get trophies. I truly believe we have a fantastic chance. We have started well; we must keep that going, because we haven't done anything yet."

He will be good (=

Arsenal’s Bendtner targets 20 goals
09.09.09 | Andrew Slevison

Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner understands he will need to score more goals to be rated in the top class.

The Denmark international has been praised for his all-around game but has come under scrutiny for his lack of goals and he plans to fix that this season.

"In order to qualify as one of the world's greatest attackers, then you are judged on the number of goals you score," Bendtner told Politiken.

"You could have all the characteristics but if you don't score people can say "Yes, he knows all the stuff but he has just scored 10 goals in 40 games.’

"Of course that's not a good record. I hope to see that I score 20-25 goals in 40 games.

"If I get a Premier League season where I score 10 times and have 30 assists, I think that would be OK as well."

Hes Crazy.

Arshavin set to anger Arsenal by playing for Russia tonight

Arsenal playmaker Andrey Arshavin is set to risk the wrath of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger tonight, by playing for Russia against Wales in a crucial World Cup qualifier.

The former Zenit St Petersburg star missed the match with Liechtenstein on Saturday due to a groin problem picked up in Arsenal’s last Premier League match at Manchester United.

Arshavin trained yesterday at the Millenium Stadium and Russia coach Guus Hiddink said: "Andrey has done everything he has had to do. At the moment, there is no big problem. There should be no worry. He will take a responsible decision if he cannot play. But he would like to play."

Hiddink added: "When you are not almost fully recovered you normally get a reaction. But he hasn't had one so far."

Arsene Wenger will be hoping Arshavin is fit for the trip to Manchester City on Saturday. So far this season the 28-year-old midfielder has scored two goals in five games in the Premier League and Champions League.

And

England have got one big date in the diary already ahead of next summer's World Cup finals - against Brazil in Qatar in a money-spinning friendly.

The FA are set to confirm within the next 48 hours that they will play the Brazilians on November 14.

That will earn the FA in excess of an estimated £1million but also provide Fabio Capello’s men with a good test - even if the venue is unlikely to impress Premier League managers in the middle of a gruelling season.

England will also look to confirm a friendly in March against a team from one of the confederations they will face in their World Cup Group. Plus, a friendly at Wembley in May is likely to be organised.

Capello will take his players to an end-of-season training camp in Innsbruck, Austria, to help them acclimatise to the higher altitude for South Africa. They are also likely to play a friendly there before jetting to the World Cup.

It's not so bad

In the league the top 3 clubs qualify.. and the 4th an 5th go into a play off.. and 1 will go through.

Currently the table is..

Brazil 15 games 30 points
Paraguay 16 games 30 points
Chile 15 games 27 points
Ecuador 16 games 23
Argentina 16 games 22 points

So if they were to win 3/4 they would be in..

If they can just keep 5th away from 6th place Uruguay who are only 1 point behind.. then they get play offs..

Thomas Vermaelen has been named the EA SPORTS Player of the Month for August.

The Belgian defender scooped the official Club prize after a string of powerful performances at the heart of the Arsenal back four.

Thomas made a dream debut at Goodison Park, heading home Robin van Persie's free-kick to give Arsenal a two-goal lead. They went on to win 6-1 as the new boy adapted quickly to English football.

The summer signing from Ajax was just as impressive at Celtic in the Champions League, making a number of timely blocks and interceptions while developing a strong partnership with William Gallas.

Thomas' standards remained high in his three other August games against Portsmouth, Celtic and Manchester United and he has been recognised by the Arsenal fans with 34.9 per cent of the votes cast.

Gallas, who scored three goals last month, finished second in our poll with 22.5 per cent. Andrey Arshavin was third.

And Arshavin is injured and Wenger is pisssedddd!

Former England striker Teddy Sheringham has come out of retirement to play for Kent League side Beckenham Town in their FA Vase campaign.

The 43-year-old, whose previous clubs include Millwall, Tottenham and Manchester United, ended his career after a spell at Colchester last year.

He will make his comeback against Combined Counties League side Banstead Athletic on Saturday, 19 September.

Sheringham and his son Charlie played in a recent fund raising game.

Sheringham, who also played for Aldershot, Nottingham Forest, Portsmouth and West Ham, made 908 club appearances, scoring 350 goals and netted 11 times in 51 England appearances.
