John Carew has promised Aston Villa fans there is no hidden agenda behind his early season absence from two key games.

The giant Norwegian striker should face Fulham on Sunday after marking his return from illness with a goal against Rapid Vienna on Thursday night.

And he admits he’s in a hurry to show Villa’s supporters how much he values their backing – and how much he wants to move the club forward.

Carew has been the subject of a massive internet rumour mill after declaring himself unfit to sit on the bench for the club’s first home game with Wigan, and then pulling out of the Vienna away game with a virus.

But he insisted: “There’s no drama, no hocus pocus, nothing going on behind the scenes any more dramatic than that I had a fever.

“I’m fine again, I’ve been back in training for a couple of days, was back in the team and hope to be again.

“If you are telling me that there’s rumours and stories on the internet then I don’t know about them. If you haven’t read things like that then they don’t need to worry you.

“I love the fans here, and I’m just happy that they seemed so pleased to have me back in the team because the welcome I got was terrific.”

Carew, 30 next Saturday, was the target of a failed bid by Spanish club Seville who had also picked up on the air of mystery around his absence.

He said: “We’ve just got to forget now about being knocked out of Europe and make sure we take the good feelings from the performance at Liverpool into the match against Fulham.

“We have to think about making sure we qualify for Europe next season now. This is a big club, and it will always be attractive to players anywhere.

“Getting knocked out this season is a blow, but it won’t stop the manager bringing in other good players. When people think about coming to a club they don’t look three months ahead, they look two or three years ahead. It will not be a problem.”

Boss Martin O’Neill hopes to parade two of those new recruits today, with Stephen Warnock making his debut and Richard Dunne completing a £6million move from Manchester City.

Dunne especially will be welcomed into the dressing room as the leader Villa have lacked since Martin Laursen quit through injury.

Stand-in captain Stiliyan Petrov said: “He’s definitely a leader. He’s the captain of Ireland, he’s been captain of Manchester City, so you love to see players like that coming to this club.

“It’s a big addition. He knows the Premier League, he’s a top international, and he will bring us great strength at the back.

Martin Laursen was a big player for us, his presence and his influence was so important, but he is gone now and we need to go on without him.”

King Gizzard
30-08-2009, 01:11 AM
RICHARD DUNNE'S move to Aston Villa is in danger of collapsing after he demanded a £2million pay-off from Manchester City.

The Republic of Ireland international returned to training at City's Carrington HQ yesterday morning ahead of today's trip to Portsmouth.

Dunne, who will be 30 next month, has four years left on his £55,000-a-week contract at Eastlands and wants City to pay up a proportion of his contract. He is also due a lucrative testimonial next season after signing from Everton in 2000.

Villa remain confident they will complete the deal but City, who are surprised at the size of the player's demand, may have to pay up.

Defender Dunne spent most of Friday at Villa Park putting the finishing touches to a four-year contract after a fee of around £6m was agreed.

But the Villains' failure to announce the signing raised suspicion among fans.

City chief Mark Hughes is happy to keep club captain Dunne but agreed to sell him after deciding he could not guarantee him a starting place.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill still hopes to bring Jermaine Jenas to the Midlands club. The £12m-rated England ace has missed Tottenham's impressive start to the season.

Madrid - Expensive debutants Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka were overshadowed Saturday by Lassana Diarra and Raul in Real Madrid's tight 3-2 opening win over Deportivo Coruna.

Ronaldo did score from a penalty, but Real needed an opening goal from Raul and a winner from Diarra to break the resistance of Deportivo, who twice came from behind and threatened to spoil the fiesta in the Estadio Bernabeu.

Starting the game with seven new signings, Real coach Manuel Pellegrini said that he was 'happy with the way that the team played.'

Pellegrini added that 'the team is balanced with (midfielders) Diarra and Xabi Alonso. We have four forwards who interchange amongst themselves very well.'

Alonso, one of Real's seven debutants, said: 'The important thing is the three points.'

'The team is not at 100 per cent yet, but little by little we will get to know each other better. Now we just have to take it one game at a time.'

Deportivo coach Miguel Angel Lotina said: 'I cannot ask for more from my players. They played a magnificent game, and I am going to congratulate them on it.'

Ronaldo, the most expensive player in the world, did little apart from scoring from the penalty spot.

Kaka looked more sure of himself and set up the first goal in the 27th minute. His classy pass set up fellow newcomer Karim Benzema, whose shot hit the post - and there was Raul, as ever, to push in the rebound.

No matter how much money Real spends on new strikers, Raul continues to be first-choice.

Just four minutes later, Deportivo forward Riki made it 1-1 by heading in a free-kick from Juca.

In the 34th minute, Raul was pulled down by the nervous Aranzubia, and Ronaldo made it 2-1 from the penalty spot.

Without suspended Pepe and injured Christoph Metzelder, Real looked edgy in defence, and Deportivo veteran Juan Carlos Valeron scored his team's second goal straight after half-time after being put through by Andres Guardado.

Valeron missed an excellent chance to make it 3-2 to the visitors, who were punished for their naivety on the hour when Diarra hit the winner.

Fielding no less than seven new signings, Real just about deserved their win, though they were begging for the final whistle at the end.

The game was watched by sprinter Usain Bolt, who received a warn welcome from the Madrid crowd.

Later Saturday, Zaragoza beat fellow necomers Tenerife 1-0 on a late goal from Javier Arizmendi, who was their top scorer last season in the second divsion.

The big game on Sunday brings together Valencia and Sevilla, while Atletico Madrid visit Malaga and Villarreal are at Osasuna.

Defending champions Barcelona kick off their Liga campaign Monday at home to Sporting Gijon. They will be without star striker Lionel Messi, who left to prepare for next week's Argentina-Brazil clash straight after Friday's 1-0 defeat of Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Super Cup.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp was counting the cost of their defeat of Birmingham City.

Redknapp saw Ledley King suffer a groin strain which forced him to substitute his key central defender at half-time, while influential midfielder Luka Modric limped off in the second half with a "nasty" calf injury.

Modric was due to go for a scan which was bad news for Tottenham but which might yet be significant for England if the Croatian is forced to miss the World Cup qualifier at Wembley a week on Wednesday.

Redknapp said: "Ledley has done his groin and we don't know how long he will be out yet. But Modric's looked like a nasty injury on the side of the right calf.

"If we lose Ledley and Modric with Michael Dawson and Jonathan Woodgate already out, the squad is a bit short."

Oh well, hopefully that slows them down a bit. 6 points ahead of us already doesnt make me feel good, although we have played a game less.

Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has declared they can win the Premiership after their 3-0 win over Burnley.

Goals from Nicolas Anelka just before half-time and two quickfire strikes after the interval from Michael Ballack and Ashley Cole - his first at Stamford Bridge - completed the demolition job.

The defeat would have been much heavier if Burnley goalkeeper Brian Jensen had not pulled off a string of fine saves. The win put Chelsea back on top of the table with four wins out of four.

The fluidity of Chelsea's football was unstoppable with players inter-changing roles with ease.

"We have showed that we can adapt to different systems and shapes with intelligent movement and I am pleased with the way my attacking players have shown they can move into spaces whatever system we play," said Ancelotti.

"I am happy because we showed good play on the pitch. We have to maintain this moment.

"My players did well in the first half but it was important to maintain quick movement of the ball for the full 90 minutes. Every week we work in training to play well and for a coach that is important.

"It means that we are going the right way. I proposed an idea and the players are doing very well with it.

"Burnley played well in defence in the first half. They like to attack and have very good qualities. They attacked very well against Manchester United when they beat them.

"We have a possibility to win the league. We have started well but we know the season is very long.

"I have trust in this squad and all of my players are hungry to show what they can do and to win every game."

----------------

Meh, they're looking very good so far I agree - but they looked like this at the start of last season as well; and look what happened. Although I think Ancelotti has got full control of his players in terms of their ego, attidude and what not that Scolari failed to do. Definitely the team to beat this year.

Luka Modric has broken his leg :bawling:

Tottenham have confirmed that midfielder Luka Modric broke his leg during their 2-1 victory over Birmingham on Saturday.

The Croatian international was forced to withdraw from the match at White Hart Lane just after half-time.

Subsequent X-rays have revealed that the 23-year-old has sustained a fracture to his right fibula.

The injury rules him out of Croatia's World Cup qualifying match with England at Wembley on 9 September.

Modric has been a key player so far this season for Tottenham, who have a 100% record after five matches and are currently joint top of the Premier League table with London rivals Chelsea.

On Saturday, Aaron Lennon's injury-time goal won the match for Spurs after Birmingham's Lee Bowyer had cancelled out Peter Crouch's opener for the home side.

Modric limped out of the game in the 49th minute complaining of a sore calf following an innocuous looking collision with Bowyer.

But Tottenham confirmed on Sunday that the player had since undergone tests which confirmed the break.

They did not provide a timescale for how long Modric would be out of action.

Defender Ledley King was also forced out of Saturday's match with a groin strain.

Spurs are already without the services of centre-backs Michael Dawson and Jonathan Woodgate with Achilles and groin injuries respectively.

After the upcoming international break, Spurs face a home game against champions Manchester United and a trip to Chelsea.

- Manchester United have reportedly failed in a bid to lure rival midfield star Stephen Ireland from Manchester City.

- Barcelona have not given up hope of luring Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas to the Nou Camp. The Catalan giants will reportedly attempt one final bid for the Arsenal captain before the window closes on Tuesday afternoon.

- Arsene Wenger is ready to up his bid to £8.5m for Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh as the long-running saga looks to beat the transfer deadline.

- Everton boss David Moyes is desperately attempting to secure funds to make a late bid for Tottenham Hotspur winger David Bentley.

- Fellow former Gunner Freddie Ljungberg is another name on the Notts County shopping list. The Swedish attacking midfielder is currently playing his trade in Seattle in the MLS.

- Portsmouth will offload goalkeeper David James to Spurs for £2m as they attempt to reduce their bloated wage bill.

- The Toffees are also monitoring Dutch international defender Johnny Heitinga and could offer Spanish side £6m for his services.

Today’s overview: Did Wayne Rooney take a dive for Manchester United’s penalty against Arsenal?

Stirring up controversy, Jonathan Northcroft wrote “Rooney and Eduardo? Here, a striker went through, a goalkeeper dived at his feet, the striker launched himself enthusiastically, a penalty was given. Wenger, certainly, saw the parallels between how Rooney won the spot-kick from which he equalised in the 59th minute and the award given to Eduardo against Celtic on Wednesday in a Champions League tie.”

Following Arsene Wenger’s touchline dismissal at Old Trafford, Duncan White speculates that the Gunners’ boss may be served with a two-match ban from the FA for his conduct.

Wenger better not get a 2 match ban.
Sky sports reporters were already saying his dismissal was ridiculous, he though there was a goal in like 90 minutes which would bring his team to drawing when he found out it wasnt he was annoyed - its to be expected. It never harmed anyone.

In a separate article though, Duncan White excuses some of Wenger’s frustrations by contesting that the north Londoners were denied a cast-iron penalty during that match. “Darren Fletcher, firefighter supreme, came sprinting across, slipped and absolutely flattened the Russian. It even looked like he handled the ball in committing the foul. A more certain penalty you will not see all season; Dean waved play on.” Also on the non-penalty Jim White wrote “[Arshavin] was denied a blatant penalty, when Fletcher removed his legs like a lumberjack assaulting a giant redwood.”

Arsenal boss Wenger ponders Vieira deadline day swoop
30.08.09 | tribalfootball.com

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will decide in the next 48 hours whether to move for Patrick Vieira.

Vieira – currently at Inter Milan – has been omitted from the French squad for their forthcoming World Cup qualifiers with manager Raymond Domenech citing a lack of match fitness.

It is unlikely that Vieira will figure prominently in Jose Mourinho’s plans at the San Siro and his return would give Wenger much-needed experience in central midfield and he would also benefit from Vieira’s influence among the younger players in the squad.

In the long-term, Vieira, who was brought up under the Wenger philosophy and who became a World Cup winner with Arsenal for France, could be groomed for a coaching role.

Talk about deja vu. A penalty awarded to Manchester United that was remarkably similar to the one Arsenal won in mid-week.

Alumina has no excuse for rushing out to meet Wayne Rooney in the manner that he did but on closer inspection he didn't actually make contact with the Utd man. The only contact came when Rooney landed on the Arsenal goalkeeper. Replays clearly show Rooney already going down before Alumina gets close to him. Talk about karma.

And, as could be predicted, the game changed on such an incident. As they say what goes around comes around. That said, shouldn't Rooney be put to the sword just as Eduardo was? However, forgive my cynicism, I doubt anything will come of it considering the player and the club involved. Can you honesty see the English media laying into our World Cup hope?

Celtic's Italian midfielder Massimo Donati has returned home after agreeing a four-year deal with Bari.

The 28-year-old, who moved to Glasgow for £3m in 2007, has been a regular under new Celtic manager Tony Mowbray.

Mowbray told BBC Scotland that the move had been completed, but suggested that any income made would not necessarily be used to bolster his squad.

"The club are looking to get a few quid back in, so the money is not openly there to go and spend," said Mowbray.

Donati admitted in April that he would welcome a return to Atalanta, where he began his career and was on loan before joining Celtic from AC Milan in 2007.

But after falling out of favour under Gordon Strachan, he has been a regular starter this season under Mowbray.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is to get an apology from referees chief Keith Hackett over his dismissal during the Gunners' 2-1 loss to Manchester United.

Wenger was sent to the stands by ref Mike Dean in the dying moments of Saturday's match at Old Trafford.

Fourth official Lee Probert advised Dean after Wenger kicked a water bottle following a disallowed Arsenal goal.

League Managers Association chief Richard Bevan has been told by Hackett that Wenger will receive an apology.

"I've spoken to Keith Hackett and he fully recognises the situation was an error and an apology will follow to Arsene Wenger," said Bevan.

"Lee Probert totally failed to manage the situation and created a needless pressure point taking the focus away from the pitch in a big event with only a minute to go."

"Although correct in 'law', the decision was completely out of context in the game and it was followed by the nonsense which followed over where Arsene Wenger should sit."

Saha gets a goal for Everton.. Lol he has no chance getting 15+ goals, but the mighty great Torres will be at 30+ before end of the season.

Man City play like Chelsea when they first became super rich (Money cheat) but over time they will have a natural team with depth, they're on the right path though.

Yeah we had an unlucky match + a rooney dive.

Bolton played surprisingly well at liverpool aswell..

And this season it looks like its between.. Rooney, Defoe, Torres and Drogba for top scorer, no one has scored over 25 in pl since henry.

City are playing well, but they have a problem.. they are attacking a lot and its leaving them open.. A counter attacking team like united would pick city apart.

They are all about offensive atm, they havent had 1 good challenege yet...

Only played.

Crystal Palace
Wolves
Portsmouth
Blackburn (who were much better than city on the day)

Man City need time to gel, this season i doubt they will do much, still a chance for 4th place but thats pushing it.

Next season they will play more like a great team with plenty of depth that will get them into the Champions League for the 2011/12 season with ease..

If they fail that then it's millions down the drain.
