Transfer Speculation Harms Team Performance - Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger
The Gunners boss is sympathetic to Everton's uncertainty after his team's 6-1 victory at Goodison Park...
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes transfer speculation can have an unsettling affect on a team's performance, pointing to the their weekend clash with Everton as an example.
The Gunners boss watched as his team thrashed the Toffees 6-1 at Goodison Park on Saturday.
A lot has been made of Everton's capitulation, with many suggesting that the protracted transfer talk involving defender Joleon Lescott played a major part in the team folding so spectacularly.
Wenger thinks the blame cannot be left entirely at Lescott's door, but noted that uncertainty surrounding players can hamper preparations.
"You never know how well you will adapt when big players leave, but the most difficult thing is the uncertainty when you don't know," Wenger told The Sun.
"When you don't know what's happening behind the scenes it's difficult to say how much Lescott wants to leave.
"I hear he is a true professional, and don't think they lost because of his performance, but of course it's always difficult."
Wenger cited the recent transfer rumours involving Cesc Fabregas as a similarly unsettling factor.
He continued, "You never know how much is being created by others, how much by [Manchester] City, and we have the same story with Fabregas.
"Barcelona didn't contact us, but it's all over the place and we can't stop that. Speculation is there every day and you have to live with it."

- Wenger "We can deal with the Celtic atmosphere"
Arsène Wenger is confident that Arsenal can handle the "special" atmosphere that awaits them at Parkhead on Tuesday night.
The Frenchman and his squad fly to Glasgow on Monday afternoon for the first leg of their vital Champions League tie with Celtic. Arsenal are the bookmakers' favourites to win over two legs and take their place in the group stage for a 12th consecutive season, but the Scottish giants proved their own European credentials with an impressive victory at Dinamo Moscow in the previous qualifying round.
Arsenal can expect a hot reception when they kick off in front of a sell-out 58,000 crowd tomorrow. Rangers' noisy travelling support at the Emirates Cup gave Wenger a taste of what to expect and he knows his players must cope with fired-up fans as well as fired-up opponents. But the manager has seen his team prevail at the Bernabeu, the San Siro and the Stadio Olimpico in recent seasons and he believes those experiences will hold Arsenal in good stead.
"You expect a massive support at Celtic," admitted Wenger.
"Scotland is always a very special atmosphere, a special noise in the stands. But we have played everywhere in Europe and we can deal with that. It will be down to us and how well we play.
"We don’t go into this game with fear. We go with respect for Celtic, but we know it is a very important game for us and we want to come home with a positive result.
"I always prepare my team first with determination and not with fear. We have played everywhere and have good experience in the Champions League. But every game is different and we know what we will face on Tuesday night – a very determined Celtic team with qualit

:hello:
Sunderland hope to secure the season-long loan signing of Lyon defender John Mensah within the next 48 hours.
"It's fair to say that we are close to agreeing a deal, I'll hopefully know more in the next 24-48 hours but we hope so," said manager Steve Bruce.
Mensah, 26, is understood to be heading for Wearside to complete the temporary move, with the option of a permanent transfer at the end of the season.
The Ghanaian centre-half would provide defensive reinforcement at Sunderland.
Bruce has previously spoken of his desire to strengthen his defence.
Stoke City midfielder Rory Delap has admitted he must keep performing to stay in the team because of the increased competition for places.
Delap started alongside Dean Whitehead in the 2-0 win over Burnley on Saturday, while Glenn Whelan had to be content with a cameo from the bench.
"Everyone in the squad will play a part," Delap told BBC Radio Stoke.
"The team is going to be pretty settled but there will be changes. If you're playing well, you'll stay in the team."
The 33-year-old is excited by his prospective partnership with summer signing Whitehead in the centre of the Potters' midfield.
"I played with Dean at Sunderland and he'll fit in well here," added Delap. "He's got the right character and the quality too, so he'll be a good signing."
Delap's long throw caused Burnley defender Stephen Jordan to score the own goal which put Stoke 2-0 and seal a comfortable opening-day win at the Britannia Stadium.
And Delap said it was good for the side to get their season up and running straight away.
"It's always important to get that first win and to get it at home," he said. "But we're under no illusions that we've got to be better on the ball than that."
The Football League has announced that Saturday's game between Bristol City and Crystal Palace will not be replayed despite a clear refereeing error.
Palace were denied a valid goal in the 1-0 defeat at Ashton Gate when Freddie Sears fired home on 30 minutes.
Referee Rob Shoebridge failed to spot the ball had crossed the line before it bounced out off the stanchion.
"The referee's decision must be final," said Football League chief operating officer Andy Williamson.
"Even in a case such as this where there has been an error of judgement. To do otherwise would be contrary to the laws of the game.

Sky Sports reporting on celtic game
Keep showing the arsenal goals at everton to..
Caltic manager does seem a little worried.
Midfielder Aiden McGeady believes Celtic must knock Arsenal out of their stride on Tuesday if they are to win their Champions League qualifier.
Arsenal visit Glasgow for the first leg on a high after destroying Everton 6-1.
"We know we are the underdogs and they are obviously the favourites, but they are definitely beatable," said McGeady.
"A lot of teams in the Premier League beat them last season by getting in and around them and not letting them play and that's something we have to do."
McGeady scored a double in a 3-1 win away to Aberdeen as the Scottish Premier League kicked off on Saturday.
But Arsenal eclipsed that hours later as they began their Barclays Premier League campaign with a stunning victory at Goodison Park.
Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United, has rejected suggestions he could be about to leave the Britannia Stadium.
Newcastle defender Steven Taylor is ready to hand in a transfer request in order to force through a move to Everton.

The Sunday Mirror says Everton boss David Moyes is ready to bid £2 million for the Spain playmaker.
Real are eager to do business and the stumbling block will be convincing Guti about a move to Goodison Park.

Tottenham remain keen on Real Madrid winger Arjen Robben.
The People says the Spanish giants need to recoup £100million of the £220m spent on new signings this summer.
Spurs boss Harry Redknapp and several other Premier League managers could return to previous targets as Real slash prices.
Real sporting director Miguel Pardeza said: "Teams have asked after Robben. He is still here because nobody has made an offer to match his talent."

the mighty football thread is horribly quiet today.. :bored:
Goalkeeper Roy Carroll has left Derby County by mutual agreement despite having two years left on his contract.
The 31-year-old Northern Ireland international has made 38 appearances for the Rams since joining from Scottish side Rangers in January 2008.
His last game for Derby was against his former club Manchester United in January 2009.
The ex-West Ham, Wigan and Hull keeper is expected to move to Danish Premier League side Odense on a free transfer.

The People says Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is ready to finalise an £11million deal for Norway centre-half Hangeland, with Carlos Vela possibly moving on loan for a season as part of the deal.
Manchester City are also keeping tabs on Hangeland's situation.
Good idea, there was a report that said that before toure even left lol...
But nothing became of it, guess it will now.
Vela is a good idea because he will be ready to play next season as a top striker, and hangeland will help bolster our defence so we have good back up as well as good starters.
We should do well this season.

Defender Danny Fox believes the expectations of the Celtic fans can drive the Glasgow side to victory against Arsenal on Tuesday evening.
Celtic are underdogs going into the Champions League play-off first leg.
"If we don't win the fans won't be happy," Fox told BBC Scotland. "We've got to put on a show, we're playing against one of Europe's best teams.
"We've got to go into the game very positively and we've got enough in our dressing room to get the right result."
Arsenal warmed up for their visit to Celtic Park with a 6-1 trashing of Everton hours after Celtic had opened their Scottish Premier League campaign with an away win against Aberdeen.
"They've been in the semi-finals of the European Cup for the last three or four years or whatever," Fox added.
"It's good to test yourself against teams like and we're looking forward to doing that."
Fox started at left-back ahead of Lee Naylor at Pittodrie but the former Coventry man is not taking anything for granted.
"I've got to go out in each game and try to perform as well as I possibly can and then it's up to the gaffer to pick the team," Fox said,
"If he thinks Nayls is doing a better job than I am then I can't really argue because he makes the decisions at the end of the day.
"Nayls congratulated me after the game and said, 'all the best' beforehand and that's what you want. It's healthy to have that competition and whoever plays will show that same desire for each other to do well."

Bikey is a mad man on the pitch
KRIS BOYD has been given a staggering £50,000-A-WEEK lure to quit Rangers and accept a life-changing move to TURKEY.
SunSport can reveal that TWO Super League clubs have expressed a shock interest in the prolific striker, who turns 26 today.
Rival outfits Trabzonspor and Kayserspor are prepared to pay a £1.5m transfer fee for the hitman.
Boyd, who hit 31 goals last season, would earn that £50,000-a-week - four time his current wages - if either deal went through.
The amazing figures, confirmed to us by sources close to the deal, came to light last night with Rangers chiefs aware of the Turkish interest.
Gers are in desperate need of funds and are ready to cash in on the striker, who is in the final year of his contract and hasn't been offered an extension, though they could hold out for £2m.
Boyd wants to stay. He rejected a deal to sign for Birmingham last season.
But the cash on offer could tempt him to reconsider.

Easy though could happen...
It could help us in other competitions though??
Think we have 4 competitions last year 2 of them we got semi final..
and carling cup im not sure along with premiership games..
and how many injuries we had it was tiring for the players...
Imagine how good we could be without having to worry about playing teams like barcelona in champions league, we could focus on premiership..
Though we have got into champions league for the last 12 years running, dont want to break that now..

Bendtner got the same amount of goals Adebayor got last season if im to be corrected. Not bad for a supposedly '****' player. Some are a bit too harsh on him.
