I enjoyed it so much.
I'm really missing going to the cinema.

Just Finished Eternal Sunshine, loved it, will do a proper review tomorrow
Niamh.

I did watch Eternal Sunshine, but it left me so confused :joker:What were you confused about?
the intro at the start is the day after Joel has had his memory of Clementine erased but he remembers wanting to go to Montauk where he meets her again, neither remembers eachother but they start to fall in love again. Then it starts from just after they broke up, Joel finds out that Clementine had him wiped from her memory so he decides to do the same, all the memories of their relationship is going on in his head while the people in his apartment are trying to wipe them but he's realised he doesn't want to forget her but he can't tell them to stop because he's unconscious so he tries to hide her in places of his head where she shouldn't be like his childhood memories, it doesn't work in the end but the last thing Clementine says to him in his head is to remember Montauk (where they'd first met) which he does and that brings us back to the intro of him skipping work to go there even though he doesn't know why and he meets her again. Then Kristen Dunsts character who works for the memory clinic, after finding out her own memory had been wiped, quits her job but steals all the files and sends them back to the clients so Clementine and Joel realise that they already were together but forgot
I did watch Eternal Sunshine, but it left me so confused :joker:There are one or two confusing moments in it, I didn't totally get it first time watching.
Just Finished Eternal Sunshine, loved it, will do a proper review tomorrowWas that the first time you seen it or had you seen it before?
Niamh.

Was that the first time you seen it or had you seen it before?I'd seen it years ago
I remembered the basic plot that they were getting their memories of each other erased but not a lot really
It reminded me a little bit of Inception where he's trying to stop people invading his mind and ends up with a basic idea, to remember Montauk.
Also, Patrick was a creep, I wish he'd gotten a proper comeuppance [emoji38]

....yeah, I guess that Defiance wouldn’t really be a classic as such, but I’m stretching classic a bit as we all have different network channel access to movies...it’s more difficult that I thought in finding movies we can all watch...
...I was going to check how available Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was...I don’t know if anyone would think that would be a good watch/re-watch...or it could be a lighter movie, more comedy...
I don't think anything is stretching it when it comes to classic movie, it's just any movies that have resonated regardless of how well known they are
I have a few days off now in a row so I'm going to watch Defiance & Eternal sunshine...I remember watching Eternal when it came out but thats years ago
so i can't recall the details..is that ironic?
Yes it's definitely a good idea to watch something lighter and comedic... I was thinking about recommending an early Kevin Smith movie at some point...

The youtube one finishes after around 40 something minutes and then starts over again but skipping every few seconds, I like an idiot thought this was some creative way they filmed it to illustrate memories disappearing

Also watched Defiance tonight
Really good movie, even more so because it actually happened. Its hard to even imagine having had to live through those times and do what they did to survive. It was great to see at the end that the two brothers survived and went on to live long lives in America

...Elijah Wood’s character in Sin City was hugely creepy as well...he plays an excellent creep...(...Sin City is a good one for the watch list tbh...another excellent movie that I’ve only seen once...)...
...Eternal Sunshine...
...I also loved it, I don’t know why I’d only watched it once up until now...unlike Memento, I did remember the overall plot but had forgotten some of the details...actually, I’d forgotten about Mary and Howard, maybe because that part of the storyline took up a very small amount of screen time...but it was also such an important part of the plot...anyway, remembering some parts of movies over time and forgetting others is quite interesting as well...how we connect to some things and details more and how some things just pass through our memory stores, it’s all been very interesting....I liked the similarity to Memento in that it was also backwards, Joel’s relationship memories...he just passed fleetingly through the deterioration of their relationship, which became quite toxic and the whole reason why Clementine deleted him and his memories were more for the happy times ...but it showed that although memories could be deleted, connections couldn’t...as with Mary as well, she hadn’t lost that attraction she’d felt to Howard....and ughhhhhh, Howard was such a creep as well, he was responding to Mary’s ‘crush’ again until his wife came...good that Mary exposed the creeps and took away their power...what they did was obviously open to so much trust betrayal and that’s what Howard and Patrick did...I guess that it was essentially a love story but so many layers as well, just loved it.....

...just going back to what you said about Finding Alice, Bollo...sorry I couldn’t find the post to quote...but about it ending with loose ends and leaving you hanging in air for the next series...?...goddamn them, I was loving it as well..Keeley Hawes is sensational ....but damn them all for leaving us there...

...yeah, you’re right about stretching them to fit whichever movies we want to watch because they left that lasting vibe with us...there has been so few new movies this last year because of COVID so it was becoming difficult to find any I hadn’t seen...but actually flipping that difficulty to take the opportunity for re-watches has been excellent, I’m loving it...

Yeah Howard was a big creep as well, you could tell when Mary played her tape she wasn't fully sure she wanted to have her memory wiped but he pressured her in to it because he's a weak man and couldn't just..not sleep with her. In the real world he could have been sued/had his medical license (If you have a medical licence for memory erasure) taken, what he did was massive abuse of his position and extremely unethical.
I suppose the "moral" of the story is, break up's/grief are horrendous to go through but you have to go through and erasing the memories sounds like a perfect solution but really our memories make us who we are, can we ever advance personally without our experiences- good and bad? I don't think so
You can see with Mary's story for example, she would just continue to make the same mistake again without having learned any lesson without her memory. Howard had his memory, he's just using the "I'm just a weak man who can't be held responsible when a pretty young girl throws herself at me" card bleh
Some recommendations.
Dancer in the Dark
Into the Wild
Requiem for a dream
Secrets and Lies (highly recommend)
The Straight story

idk much about classics, but as a possible franchise to be discussed Tremors?
during one of my america holidays i've also been at the location where the first ones had been filmed, Lonepine, they got an entire tremors museum there which is pretty cool
we recently had the 7th movie of those, so quite a few to discuss either

So i watched Defiance...
I'm sure it's a good movie if you like that genre...but I've never really been able to get into war movies. It's a very relevant story about a part of history which i never knew about... However I'm a bit of a phillistine when it comes to history and i just couldn't get into it, i didn't find any of the characters resonated... but thats just me I'm not always the most empathetic person.... sorry
I'm looking forward to watching Eternal sunshine later

I watched Eternal Sunshine today based off this thread and enjoyed it, think I actually made it more confusing than it was because for a lot of the film I was thinking they must have had their memories erased more than once lol
It was a sweet, clever film though which was well acted, probably give it a 7/10

...just going back to what you said about Finding Alice, Bollo...sorry I couldn’t find the post to quote...but about it ending with loose ends and leaving you hanging in air for the next series...?...goddamn them, I was loving it as well..Keeley Hawes is sensational ....but damn them all for leaving us there...
I did like watching it and got a bit obsessed with it as where the parents lived was on the same road i grew up in in Croydon and it was really weird seeing my old street on telly! but i got to ep4 and thought they're never going to wrap this up in one series...still a goood show though

...I’m fine with American Psycho...(...I’m not sure if I’ve seen it already tbh..)..I’m not sure how gory it will be but that’s fine, if the story line is gripping, I can easily not watch a few bits if they’re a difficult watch...so we can do that next, then...?..
American Psycho is great, again though I haven't watched it in years so can't remember the details I have it on DVD so i know it's a film I liked...
Still got to watch Eternal though which I'm going to do tommorrow:blush:

So I watched Eternal Sunshine....
It was much more surreal than I remember but also quite realistic in terms of relationships in that most finish on bad terms and we would love to forget them but then later on we remember the good times. The interesting question though is would we do them the same as strangers armed with the information of what went wrong in the first place? Very thought provoking...
I also had forgotten the relationships between the people that worked for Lacuna which were good subplots..especially the guy trying to seduce Clementine with Joels words...
I would love to have seen a bit more of the start of the relationship and how Joel finished it with Naomi as its sounds like there was an overlap

...apparently there were some scenes which were deleted that gave more insight into Joel’s relationship with Naomi because it would have changed how we saw him ...in that there could have been an overlap, as you say, Bollo...when he and Clementine first met and he appeared awkward/shy, the suggestion is that it could equally have been guilt, rather than shyness...I hadn’t actually picked up on that...(...I googled whether there was an overlap......so that was very perceptive of you...the unedited scene(s) might be viewable online, I’m not sure...
...Elijah Wood’s character, Patrick..?...was such a creep, taking her underwear when the erasing was being done and basically ‘stealing’ Joel’s memories..it was obviously all about Joel and Clementine but how many females had he done that with...?...and obviously Howard was such a creep as well, to feel that something like that and how vulnerable someone would be etc in that situation...would be abused in such a way...it’s just shuddering....
...yeah, I guess it would be interesting to think, would we go back to a relationship because of the good times...?...and I guess that would always vary, depending on the reasons for it ending and whether a different outcome could ever be possible...I need to think about that more.....
Thanks Ammi
Just read your post about American Psycho , I watched that movie ages ago and Christian Bale is like a chameleon and he's convincing in that role . it's also like a dark comedy but that's probably because of Patrick Bateman's creepy smiley manic personality :skull: .
...yeah, Christian Bale is excellent in the part and such a convincing ‘psycho’....I guess for me, GoldHeart ...?...because there was so much that I couldn’t watch with the violence, it also meant I missed so much of that dark comedy as well...I did catch it in a few places but I just felt so tense throughout that everyone he met, he would slaughter and sadly I couldn’t get beyond that...but I know that’s just a personal thing for me...

American Psycho
This one confused me more than Memento and Eternal Sunshine :laugh2: wtf? Did he actually kill anyone or is he just completely insane and imagined it all? Anyway, hhhmmm I didn't like it very much. It was a very cold kind of a film, none of the characters were likable in anyway especially Patrick (I know you're not supposed to like him) but yeah, not a fan of this one at all
...oh thank the Lord, I thought it was just me because of how violent it was and because I’d avoided eye contact with the screen for so much of it...I felt that it had taken so much more out of the movie and story for me as well so I’d lost the storyline and point that other viewers wouldn’t lose...I mean, I presumed it wasn’t all real and some was imagined because his lawyer had confirmed that he hadn’t killed that guy...but had he killed anyone or no one at all and everything was imagined...had he killed some homeless people but not killed them in his own home...I mean he was obviously very disturbed, whether it be real or not ...but so much of the movie was given over to the actual killings themselves and the brutality of them...to have left it hanging like that....and I also had no place of being able to get inside his head either, to see any emotion...and even with extremely disturbed emotion, we’re still often able to see it in characters and we need to, I think...that for me is an essential because it does give me the ‘watchable’ bits to counter the violence I can’t watch...but there was nothing...neither love or contempt for humans, they just weren’t human to him...is what it felt...he felt nothing, they were nothing...what was the point and it took very little to trigger him and sometimes nothing at all because it was all preplanned...other than to say this ‘perfectly ordered person in nice expensive suits is actually a monster...but we didn’t even know that for sure ....I wanted to see if anyone else felt the same or if I just wasn’t getting it...

I think you have to have some characters in there that make you want to route for them. The whole film just felt soul less to me
...even with characters like Hannibal Lecter, there is something that you can attach to in the whole psychology of it...but there was nothing in American Psycho for me...
...I’m just looking at some on Netflix atm and I don’t know if anyone else has any thoughts...?..but Netflix have showing Falling Down, which I recall to be a good movie, The Green Mile, Seven Pounds, Panic Room.... American Gangster, I’m not sure if I’ve seen that....Limitless, Inception, Shutter Island...I think The Truman Show is showing on one of the networks, I’m not sure which one...
...The Terminal...I love that movie, it’s such a guilty pleasure...

I'd watch any of those choices though, so whatever anyone else wants?
...I’m pretty sure that Atonement is showing as well...

Niamh.
25-01-2021, 02:42 PM
I don't think I ever watched that actually, not usually in to those kind of period films but I would give it a go anyway, broaden my horizons
...Atonement, you mean...?...I think it might be a good first time watch, movie...the other one is Falling Down, but I don’t recall that much about it, other than I enjoyed it...it might be especially relatable to now and restrictions and lockdowns etc and when people just ‘snap’....
Niamh.
25-01-2021, 02:53 PM
Yeah I was talking about Atonement but would watch either, I saw falling down years ago but would do a rewatch

Oh really thats interesting, i did wonder because right at the beginning he is pondering wether to go back Naomi because he says 'she's nice and she loved me'...and then near the end a couple of times him and Clementine have a conversation about wether he's married and I think he says he lives with someone ...so it would have been interesting to see how he got out of that because he seems so awkward/ shy and lonely like he hasn't had a partner for ages otherwise...but like you say maybe it's guilt..
Yes Howard was really creepy, i did not see that coming when Mary came on to him, that they had already been together, seems like both him and Patrick were taking advantage of the system, which i think is probably why Mary did what she did with the tapes... Mary needs to be with the Mark Gruffalo character...

Seven Pounds
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind
Revolutionary Road
Shutter Island
Legends of the Fall

...you’re not holding up, Bollo...so it’s really if you want to watch it, then please do...I tend to look for next watches quite quickly just because it can take a bit of time to find something we can all access, you know...but there’s no pressure to watch quickly...American Psycho because it’s such an iconic movie and I think has very high critical acclaim...but personally I just couldn’t connect to it, obviously many people feel differently...I am glad that I watched it, though because it’s still good to look at what is our thing and what isn’t and the reasons for that etc...
...Steel Magnolias...
...I’m not sure what there is to say, really...’Steel Magnolias’ were women of their time..as Truvy says to her husband ‘ because it makes us feel pretty..’...I can’t recall which beauty treatment he mentioned...anyways, obviously Truvy’s beauty treatments made the ‘magnolias’ ...and beneath the surface of those magnolias was the emotional strength of steel that kept all of their lives together...all of them so different but with a huge connection and bond of friendship...sometimes we just need to cry, it’s a welcome relief..and atm we also need to feel our friendships more in our hearts and this is the movie...I loved it, unashamedly I loved it and am glad I revisited it at just the perfect moment.....a perfect cast...
...(...I think also showing on Amazon Prime for free../thank you Marsh...)...is A Few Good Men, which I recall so little about but it’s definitely in the Classic vibe...so that’s a thought...?...I was wondering if Alf would join us for that...

So I re watched American Psycho...
I'd forgotten how good this movie is and how it's possibly more relevant today than it was back then....For me Patrick represents society in general ... He wants to use the right skincare products to look his best, eat healthily, go to the gym, have a good job, the perfect apartment, be seen to be going to all the right places, be admired by his peers, be seen to have all the politically correct views (i.e Supports female equality, against racism, abolish homeless ness, against aparthied/ voilence, terrorism, human rights and materialism etc)
Whilst on the inside he is actively being misogynistic, violent, taking drugs, abusing the homeless, being racist, completely materialistic, and self absorbed etc..
A generalisation maybe but as a modern comparison when you think of things like instagram where everybody is competing to show how perfect their lives are and then you look at the trolls on any websites who are just tearing people to shreds...that's what I took away from it anyhow...
...that’s really interesting, Bollo...because I did see that, how his world was so ‘surface’ but I hadn’t made that association with social media in today’s world...maybe because I don’t actually do social media so it wasn’t an instinctive attachment...although I couldn’t personally connect with any of it, your thoughts are really interesting in that comparison....especially with hateful internet trolls and how they vent their ‘inner selves’....
.....hmmmmm, it’s a confusing movie because I’m still left with...did he kill them all/some/any etc....that was the first watch for me and maybe a pandemic/generally anxious time is not the best to watch it either...

I watched 25 minutes of Memento last night. It was pretty good although it is a bit confusing. I need to finish it off.
Also, did anyone else think Guy Pearce's narrating sounded so much like Kevin Spacey's narrating of American Beauty? Every time he narrated all I could hear was Spacey's voice. They sound so much alike, but only when Pearce is narrating.

It's such a great movie. I haven't watched it in a long time, so a rewatch is in order.
They sound so much alike, but only when Pearce is narrating.
...I hadn’t really thought of them sounding similar, it’s so long since I’ve seen American Beauty tbh...I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts when you get to the end, Tony...it really is quite a genius film...
...I started to watch A Few Good Men last night ...and then Mr Ammi said...I enjoyed watching that again, good plan...and I’d slept through most of it, so I’ll try to watch again today...

I must admit i don't remember the narration on American beauty...but i haven't watched it since it came out...I know it was really big/ controversial movie at the time but all I can't recall why..
I tried to find Steel Magnolias as well but couldn't see it anywhere except on Amazon prime where you have to pay... so I'm happy to watch a few good men as i don't think I've seen it..
A possible recommendation for viewing after is Raising Arizona.. It's a bit of a quirky cult classic..

A Few Good Men
I love this film, I have seen it a far few times and I enjoy it every time I watch it (even though i find Tom Cruise very smarmy and annoying but maybe that helps understanding how he got under Jessups skin so much too haha) I'm a big fan of court based/justice type films anyway but this one has a very original idea for a story I think. It's a good question to pose, who is really responsible when it comes to crimes committed by soldiers but on the orders of a superior. It's a bit of a moral Dilemma really and I'm still not too sure where I stand on that tbh although I could definitely see the Soldiers train of thought on it too. That follow orders without question or people die kind of mentality
Oh yes and Jack Nicholson definitely steals the show in this film
...A Few Good Men...
...the absorbing watch for me was definitely Jack Nicholson mostly, although watching the three put the case together was obviously satisfying as well...Jack Nicholson’s character so depicted that ultimate abuse of power thing and that he felt he could basically give orders for anything and not be answerable for anything because others ‘didn’t understand the job he did..’...horrendous individual who underestimated a ‘kid’ and the excellence that he was in his job......and it is a strange one in that obeying a direct order is something that has to be done without question but what about when that order directly conflicts with protection of your fellow soldier/marine...what if that order is to directly harm them/take their life...
...I read that it was based on some actual events, not a true story as such...I found a site which described the original story as a ‘cold case’, so maybe some interest there...but it was a dead site, I couldn’t get onto it...but I would be interested to know the inspiration for the movie...and a little bit more about it if I can find anything more detailed...
...Jack Nicholson’s character’s sexist remarks to/about Demi Moore’s character as well..?...interesting also that I read some movie critics of the time had said...well, if hers and Tom’s character weren’t going to have a romantic thing, why have a woman in that part.....I mean because obviously that would be the main purpose of a female...
...anyways, another good watch...it really is nice to watch these movies with fresh eyes......
...I’ll look at what’s showing atm but any ideas etc for the next watch...?...

...Fallen...
...I didn’t not enjoy it as such....I thought that the whole plot potential was good but it was just kind of ‘weak’ and didn’t give what it could have with the plot and also with the cast.../...a great cast ....I can see why it’s a Denzel film that’s lesser known...but it was far from awful or even bad...it just didn’t have the energy it could have had for me...
...it was described as a supernatural horror crime thriller movie, so maybe hadn’t quite decided itself which way to go so covered all bases...I would definitely say a touch of supernatural...horror..?...no, not really...crime...?..yeah, obviously there were crimes in that the hosts became the bodies that committed those murders and so their host life became a serial killer ..thriller...?..well not a huge amount of thrills and the ending reveal or twist was ...oh, okay then...for me...
...anyways, it still wasn’t a bad watch, though...it sounds as though it was but it wasn’t...it just didn’t provoke any thought or much emotion...the characters were likeable enough...(...I mean Denzel’s character and his family...)...but there was an absence of edge of the seat moments and nail biting/heart stopping moments...that’s it really, I’m waffling because I’m trying to pad out what to say and give some thoughts that aren’t really there very much because it’s an okay to spend a few hours on but forgettable movie...I can’t recall enough about Constantine storyline to feel it had shades of that but it may have had...

I never noticed that, I haven't used Prime much tbh, we got a years free subscription with our broadband contract, I don't find it as user friendly or as good a layout as Netflix though
...it was thanks to our Marsh that I noticed it because usually I would just be looking at the movie title and then checking if it was going to cost me money...I’m the same with the free subscription except it’s not hours, someone else gave it to us.../...their log in for it because they don’t use it...I wasn’t sure at first about doing that .....but heck, let’s just be reckless atm, we needed the choice...
...strangely I prefer the format of it now over Netflix and that’s only in the last week or so...(...again, our Marsh...)...because now that I see how it works, I find it easier to search through...
...another movie that I’d like to watch again is Sucker Punch, but I’ll have to check the movie sites to see if it’s screening....

Oh god I'm really behind sorry at the moment I'm trying to get used to the new shift pattern at work...
So I watched A few good men...
I think i had seen it before but forgotten it as at the time late 80's/ early 90's I was into a much more whimsical genre of films ( Heathers/Flatliners etc...) so i wasn't really into courtroom dramas at the time, I am much more so now...
This is a tricky one for me as it was very morally complex and had an interesting storyline.... However I'm not a Cruise fan so this could be clouding my judgement, but at this particular time period he just seems to play the same character ... a young, arrogant but dynamic and promising- insert profession here -(pilot/ barista/ racing car driver/sports agent etc) goes out on a limb , gets humbled and then ultimately triumphs....Maybe i'm too cynical.. I found Demi Moore completely faded into the background...I thought Jack Nicholson was pretty good , i didn't know this was the movie where the quote ' You can't handle the truth!' came from, i enjoyed that bit and i did like the verdict/ moral at the end...But i just found it took way too long to get there..
Well I have a couple of days off now so I should be able to catch up with Fallen... I'm looking forward to this one It looks really interesting and i don't think I've seen it before...

Sucker Punch (will finish Fallen today)
hhhhhmmmm I don't even know what to write about this one. I can't decide whether I liked it or not. I guess the whole movie was a pimped up version of what was actually happening? Which was kind of interesting but it also felt like the movie was made to titillate teenage boys  It didn't come across as empowering for women to me if that's what it was trying to do. I think they were trying to send a message of you're bad for only viewing women as sexual objects etc but imo it fails to do that in the same way that TV show "Cuties" does, you can't condemn the exploitation of women in film by exploiting women in film, does that make sense?
Right I've decided no I didn't like it
Niamh.

And another thing(Sucker Punch Spoilers ahead)..........
Been thinking a lot about this film this morning, trying to arrange and articulate my thoughts on it so I've spent the last hour or so reading reviews on it. This one in particular really says what I feel about it :
Is Zack Snyder‘s Sucker Punch exploitation or empowerment? That’s the question that’s been floating around since even before the film was released, and it’s a pretty obvious one given that the movie was marketed entirely on the appeal of scantily clad young women wielding big ass weapons. Most of the reviews I’ve read of the film at least touch on the issue, and Snyder has preemptively addressed it in interviews by saying he intends the film to be empowering to women.
It’s not.
Sucker Punch may look like empowerment on the surface, sure. At first glance, Baby Doll and her gun-toting pals appear to be refreshing antidotes to the weak, helpless, ditzy female creatures that populate so much of modern cinema – including a great many films aimed at women. The girls of Sucker Punch fight back, hard. In a society that’s still unwilling to officially allow female soldiers to engage in combat, their spirit and courage seems like a step forward. (Unofficially, of course, female soldiers are already engaging in combat, but that’s another topic.)
The thing is, though, that the trope of the ass-kicking hottie is nothing new. She’s a common figure in anime and video games, for example, and appears in films like Kill Bill and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. She’s not always offensive, but she’s not inherently empowering, either. If she’s framed in the same old male gaze, she ends up being just another variation of the same old male fantasies.
And make no mistake: Sucker Punch may star five beautiful actresses, but in actuality, it’s all about the men. Men are the audience, both in real life and in the bordello fantasy universe where most of the film takes place. Men set the plot in motion, and act as villains and leaders. The girls look and act like walking male fantasies, and the movie makes sure we see them that way – by dressing them up in skin-baring outfits, lingering on their conventionally hot bodies, and oh yeah, making their attractiveness to men a huge plot point. In fact, the girls’ entire escape plan hinges on one character’s ability to mesmerize men with her sexy dancing.
The girls really only kick ass in their dreams — or rather, in a dream within their dream — and even there, a man is calling the shots. Only one of the five girls makes it out of the asylum alive, and that girl is Sweet Pea — the girl who feared male power the most from the very beginning. And even when she gets out, she seems meek and powerless. In the final scenes of the film, she’s confronted by two policemen investigating incidents in the area. She’s unable to speak up for herself, and only gets off the hook when the male bus driver (Wise Man, from the girls’ fantasy-within-a-fantasy) comes to her defense.
Moreover, although Snyder says that “hopefully by the end the girls are empowered by their sexuality and not exploited,” this is not at all what happens. Sexuality is treated as a weapon from the very beginning, for both genders. For the men, this means sexual assault. Though no rape actually occurs in the film, the threat of it hangs over the entire film — whether explicitly, as during the attempted rape scenes, or more subtly, as in the shots of men inappropriately and possessively leering at the girls. Later, as the girls begin to fight back, they use their sexuality as weapons as well – by using it to dupe men long enough to steal their things. And to drive the point home, whenever Baby Doll is performing her sexy, sexy dance, she jumps into a violent fantasy of explosions and gunfights.
But the men, at least, seem to take pleasure in sex. The girls are never seen as enjoying their sexuality on their own terms. In fact, Baby Doll’s face as she launches into each dance routine wears an expression of pain and humiliation. Which, seeing as every man but one in this movie is a deranged sicko, is probably part of the appeal.
So to summarize, yes, the girls kick ass, but they only do so within the context of fighting back against men who already have power over them. Most of the girls don’t win, and the one who does still needs a man to help her and look after her. In this light, Snyder’s claim that Sucker Punch is empowering isn’t just false, but damaging. It reframes feminism – or “female empowerment,” if you’d prefer not to use the F-word – in terms of male fantasy. In other words, it’s okay for ladies to kick ass and ****, as long as they do it in a way that turns men on. I’m not saying this was Snyder’s conscious intention – I seriously doubt it was – but that’s the message that comes across to this viewer.
Sucker Punch is straight up exploitation. There’s no winking here, or clever spins, or any of that. And that’s fine, to a point. Exploitation films have their own kind of value, and I get that. What bothers me isn’t so much the cute girls in skimpy outfits, but Snyder’s notion that women like me are supposed to find them empowering. As Jezebel’s Dodai Stewart put it: “Sucker Punch is a two-hour $82 million fetish film examining how hot sad schoolgirls look when holding weapons. Snyder should have just made a porn movie — it might have been better, and it definitely would have been cheaper and more honest.”
What’s frustrating about the sexism of Sucker Punch is that if Snyder really wanted to make a film that was more than pure exploitative fantasy, he could’ve easily done so. There is a way to show beautiful ladies fighting in a way that’s not exploitative – Buffy the Vampire Slayer is an obvious example of a girl who regularly beats people up, but also happens to be attractive. It’s also possible to take exploitation tropes and turn them on their head, as Quentin Tarantino did in Kill Bill. (Whether Kill Bill qualifies as feminist is a whole other line of discussion, but for now, suffice it to say it’s miles better than Sucker Punch in that department. And in most other departments, for that matter.)
So, what’s the difference between a badass female character and a lazy stereotype of a badass female character? The answer is simple, though you wouldn’t know it from the number of two-dimensional ladies Hollywood churns out every year: You give her an inner life, and you prioritize that inner life over her outer appearance. Your powerful female character doesn’t have to be ugly or dressed in frumpy clothes – go ahead, put her in stilettos and a push-up bra – but if her attractiveness to men is all there is to the character, she’s nothing more than an object.
Cowboy Bebop’s Faye Valentine makes a good example of how to write a conventionally sexy female character who’s more than just a conventionally sexy character. Not only is she physically perfect in that way that anime women so often are, her outfit is just as skimpy as the ones in Sucker Punch, and she wields a weapon every bit as well as Baby Doll. The difference is that Faye has a distinct personality, a history, an inner life. These make her a character you care about, even while you’re admiring how smoking hot she is.
Likewise, though the women of Kill Bill are uncomplicated and supermodel-gorgeous, they showcase a physical and emotional power in a way that’s sadly absent from Sucker Punch. Even as we’re reveling in fantasies of chick fights and dragon ladies and naughty nurses, we’re admiring how strong the ladies of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad are. Though their looks are a large part of the fun in watching them, there’s more to these women than surface appearances. As I pointed out earlier, Sucker Punch is only comfortable showing girls fighting when it’s in a second-level fantasy, and even then they have to look hot the whole time.
Of course, you can’t have your cake and eat it too. If Sucker Punch had deepened its characters, it wouldn’t work quite so well as the mindless, indulgent fantasy it is now. Part of the film’s appeal is undoubtedly its very brainlessness – you get to check your mind and emotions at the door, and just indulge your id for a couple of hours. You wouldn’t be able to do that as easily if you had to actually invest in the film and its characters. For my money, though, a Sucker Punch that featured real characters instead vaguely drawn archetypes would’ve made for a far more satisfying experience.
Sucker Punch isn’t the most misogynistic film out there – there are far, far worse. But it’s not progressive, either, and that’s why the argument that it’s “empowering” bothers me so much. If you want to revel in two hours of hot chicks in skimpy clothing fighting dragons and undead Nazis and ****, that’s your prerogative. Have fun with that, and enjoy it for what it is. But please don’t pretend I should be celebrating it.

...Sucker Punch...
...I feel really bad for recommending tbh because I don’t think it was a movie for this club and it wasn’t the movie I recall it to be...it’s strange how we can sometimes remember things... or maybe I should say, it’s more how at different points through time, our focus on watching can differ...for me, my overall memory of it was more the beginning and ending...in that she’d obviously accidentally killed her sister...(...after sadly losing their mother...)...while she was trying to protect that sibling from the sexual abuse she obviously went through...for me, I had never been quite entirely sure which of the institution parts were l and which were imagined...I mean, obviously the fight scenes were imagined...but other part....and then the ending really impacted with me because of the sadness of it and that the lobotomy had been performed and this was all imagined during that procedure...anyways, on a positive..(...for me...)...my focus of the movie on the first watch hadn’t absorbed other parts that made me feel that I wasn’t sure that I wanted to continue watching at points last night... and this is why it’s good to revisit these things because our focuses can change at different times as well when absorbing ....

...this was how I recalled it as well, to have had discussion points, which is what we’re looking for as well...it’s strange though how the beginning and ending were the main points of my focus in recollection and yet it was all the exploitation I was focusing on now, as in the middle bit...and yeah, I do get that the intention was that we strongly felt female empowerment as well ..?...but didn’t feel it and couldn’t feel it because all I felt was the vulnerability of the girls and that it all ended very, very sadly and very, very tragically...

I wonder if I had seen it when it came out originally would my own thoughts have been different? I was always a bit of a feminist but time changes how you view things as well and maybe I would have thought woman + sword = empowerment too, I don't know  I'm sure if I had watched it as a teenager I definitely would have thought that

...yeah when I think about it, that’s it also...it’s not so much that my focus hadn’t been there but that I obviously felt that empowerment...they became like Charlie’s Angel types, you know...so kick ass but I just wasn’t feeling that at all yesterday...actually my OH and I did have a big discussion about it because he had felt the same discomforts and wasn’t sure what to make of it...
...just a slight off topic and hmmmmm, I’ve always looked at characters like Lara Croft as embodying and showing female empowerment but is female exploitation more the thing there as well....I mean, the overriding thing ...maybe I’m going completely off course but the fight scenes or fight dreams were very video game, weren’t they...

...yeah when I think about it, that’s it also...it’s not so much that my focus hadn’t been there but that I obviously felt that empowerment...they became like Charlie’s Angel types, you know...so kick ass but I just wasn’t feeling that at all yesterday...actually my OH and I did have a big discussion about it because he had felt the same discomforts and wasn’t sure what to make of it...
...just a slight off topic and hmmmmm, I’ve always looked at characters like Lara Croft as embodying and showing female empowerment but is female exploitation more the thing there as well....I mean, the overriding thing ...maybe I’m going completely off course but the fight scenes or fight dreams were very video game, weren’t they...
I don't play video games so my only real knowledge of Lara Croft is through the films, that's an interesting question though, I never remember feeling that when watching them, I definitely felt she was bad ass and it was good to see a female lead like that. I haven't watched any of those films in years though so I wonder would feel different now? You know if we could find it somewhere, it might be a great one to watch next to test that. What do you think?

...yeah, I was just looking to see if there were any comparable ones to Tomb Raider in case it’s not screening but I can’t find any instantly that I would also attach that female sexualise thing in the same way...obviously Wonder Woman is a comparison but that’s more recent so I doubt any thoughts might differ from the first watch...I’ll check later to see if it’s screening, yeah it would be a good watch...
...oh, going back to what you said, Bollo, as well....Tom Cruise...?..I think he’s stepped outside his box as it were for a few of his characters..I can’t quite recall which ones atm...maybe in The Firm was one...?...but on the whole though, different movie/same character with him and quite often having that ‘smug’ quality that’s just so annoying...also in A Few Good Men, his character was trying to be smug as well to wind Jack Nicholson up to expose himself...so, already smug and adding smug in....eeeek....still a good movie, though...

he comes across that way in real life so maybe it's not all down to him playing characters like that either
...and actually and taking about female roles as well...what the holy heck was Demi Moore doing in tidying his apartment because he was too lazy and his guests were tripping over things....pick the stuff up and throw it at him, Demi...or put him in the cupboard so he can think about cupboard use-age ....

Great stuff, I'll try to think if other characters/films like that as well just in case we kind somewhere to watch Tomb Raider

As a side project as well we should see how many of these films pass the Bechdel Test, especially the female empowerment ones :fan:

Just read a comment on line about Sucker Punch actually and I hadn't noticed that but it's true :
Anyone else notice how no "real" male characters died in this movie? They were all giant samurai statues/steampunk Germans/robo-cops. No flesh and blood "men" were killed - injured, yes, but not killed.
Yet several of the women died...it just made me ponder.

Sucker Punch
Such a strange and dark yet interesting fantasy within a fantasy movie with coping mechanisms and psychological dealings, it's sad most of them died . I only watched it once years ago . I might have to revisit it again.
And wise man was like an angel figure aswell .

....in an earthly/human comparison, wise man was also like the social worker/psychologist/school family support counsellor as well...in that mentoring and teaching of coping skills, I think...that was a second watch for me, GoldHeart and it is an interesting movie in that I was focused quite differently this time...although I recall most of it as I watched again, it was also a bit like watching a different variant of the movie...

...Yeah, I hadn’t really thought of that...I guess because the concept was of female sexualisation but interesting...the other thing that I thought earlier as well is the age of the girls and although their exact ages weren’t specified as such, they were obviously very young and barely adult age...and Baby Doll especially is such a child name association....so obviously that adds another layer...

Baby doll was 20, the orderly asks her step father what age she was when he's filling out her admittance form at the start. We never get any of the girls real names though and each one of them is named after an object which I think is probably on purpose from the person who made the film, you know, him telling us how bad objectifying women is by objectifying women

...oh I do recall now with her age...you’re so good at recalling every detail, I tend to be quite focused with certain things, which is why the movie looked so different and because it is such a layered plot as well...but yeah, naming them after objects would have been purposeful as well, I would have thought...and their purpose was to dance/to entrance men...if they couldn’t do that then they had no purpose...I remember on first watch as well that I was very conflicted in thoughts about the female doctor... Carla Gugino’s character...because she obviously served the men in ensuring the ‘performed’ for them...a bit like a Madam in a way...?...but she was also protecting the girls in her way by ensuring they stay alive and fulfilled that purpose...?...

She did tell Blue when Blondie confessed their plan though  One part that made little sense to me as well to do with her was just after Baby Doll is lobotomised at the end, she stands there and lets him do it and then he says she was the one who authorised it and she's shocked because she didn't, I mean did she never wonder beforehand who did, she's her patient did she not think to ask first or look in her file at least?
...Tomb Raider is screening on Amazon Prime but it’s a pay for one...SALT was the closest that I could find but I can’t recall many details about it.../...I know I’ve watched it, though......
...I’m only just starting to look and found this on Amazon...it’s not a classic but the trailer looks okay and it has reasonable rating...

...I’m looking which sci fi are screening as well for Gav...

...Waterworld is another one on Amazon...and a Deadzone, it’s Stephen King but that’s all I know...
...The Thing...
...Super 8...
...Big Fish...
...28 Days Later...if only COVID could have followed that rule an begone....

Water world is terrible. I feel like I've seen Dead Zone before but can't remember it at all so that would work for me or both films that you posted trailers for look good as well
Deadzone is great!
...I don’t think that I’ve seen that one, Vanessa...
...Dead Zone or I’m Your Woman have the better rating...
