..would anyone be interested in this..?....it would be the same as when Locke did his movie club, only the choices would be a movie that is considered a classic and from any time span...so we all watch the first movie..(around a week to watch each one..).. and then all review etc and then I'll choose someone else to make a choice for us all...
..The first movie would be Good Will Hunting, with Robin Williams and Matt Damon...

Have we got time limit to watch it?
..around a week-ish, Jon..?..we'll just be fairly laid back with it, if people are busy etc and it takes a little longer, I don't wan it to feel like a chore...using spoilers with the reviews would be helpful as well for those who haven't seen the film yet...
...we can recommend classic horror movies as well...(I'll just cover my eyes at the gruesome bits....)..because I know horror is your bag as well.../they just have to be classics is all...

Just finished Good Will Hunting... I had forgot why I loved this film so much... all the little bits that make up the whole of it. We were constantly reminded in media this last year with Matt Damon that this was his first Oscar win... him and Ben Affleck... and it starts to get old, the whole boy wonders bit over this movie... but when you watch it and think about what they put in there, the depth of even just the minor scenes... yeah, this was an impressive movie for them to write and act in.
favourite quotes:
Will (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000354/?ref_=tt_trv_qu): Do you like apples?
Clark (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0936001/?ref_=tt_trv_qu): Yeah.
Will (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000354/?ref_=tt_trv_qu): Well, I got her number. How do you like them apples?
-------------------------------
Sean (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000245/?ref_=tt_trv_qu): [to his class] See you Monday. We'll be talking about Freud and why he did enough cocaine to kill a small horse.
-------------------------------------
Will (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000354/?ref_=tt_trv_qu): What is this, a Taster's Choice moment between guys?
------------------------------------
Sean (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000245/?ref_=tt_trv_qu): People call those imperfections, but no, that's the good stuff.
Sean (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000245/?ref_=tt_trv_qu): You're not perfect, sport, and let me save you the suspense: this girl you've met, she's not perfect either. But the question is whether or not you're perfect for each other.
--------------------------------------------
and this moment/scene broke my heart a little

..yeah I would give it a go as well and just miss out the gruesome bits, horror is so not what I would watch either, Mokka..but a lot of the horror classics are more psychological/suspense etc and I'm ok with that bit/not so much gory...and I'll just fast forward over some bits if I need to but still be able to follow the story etc...I keep a pillow for my face next to me and I'm never afraid to use it....

..Good Will Hunting...
..I found it really difficult not to feel extremely emotional through parts of the movie...obviously because of Robin Williams himself but also because it seemed even more poignant now in thinking that how his character felt about his wife would maybe be how his own wife could be feeling..and also with my own mum because she's never been able to get beyond my dad's death and losing him...the part where he told Will the little funny story and then said that with the millions of funny/lovely memories etc, what he felt most was the sadness of her death...just heart-breaking and something that many people would relate to...also such an intense moment in it when they both shared their 'parent' stories, which finally 'released Will' from so much...
...re- watching it also reminded me of how much it was one of those movies that felt a little 'un-finished' in that it left you wondering how his life was going to be in choosing love as it were...would his gift still be something that was part of his life as well, would it all work out for him and Skylar etc...and I always think it's such a good sign when I get so absorbed and involved in characters like that...great movie, great cast and a general 9/10 on the film scale, I think...

..Birds is one for me and probably why I still fear birds, especially large flocks of them....I guess that 'classic' would be, more a film that most people have probably watched/or heard of/had success and acclaim in it's time and has sustained that, rather than a more obscure, cult type movie...

Good Will Hunting
So I rewatched it with my daughter and she loved it, for me it was even better than i remembered. Robin Williams is so good in it but his character has such a sadness about him that i feel might have been close to how Robin felt alot of times himself, maybe that's why on this watch it felt more emotional?
Anyway, great film, great writing by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck too.
Loved, loved Loved it
9.5/10

I think my main problem before watching this film is I despise Ben Aflleck so was not looking forward to the fact he starred in it, let alone co wrote it. Thankfully he was hardly in the movie and lets be honest Damon probably wrote most of the film so I am just going to pretend Ben Afleck had nothing to do with the movie.
Overall it was a good film. Williams, Damon, Driver and Skarsgard were all great, and it was nice to see Williams in a serious role and different from his usually comedy parts. I was intrigued by most of the characters; strangely I liked Skarsgard and Williams more together and Damon and Driver together more than Damon and Williams characters.
I liked it and Damon did a decent job on the script, but I found myself getting bored towards the end, plus with the fact Ben Affleck (his character had no purpose at all in this movie) was in it I rate it a bit lower - 3/5

Good Will Hunting
I thought it was ok, but I didn't really enjoy it overall. There were some good moments (my favourite scene was probably the emotional one between Will and Skylar in the bedroom) but overall I found it slightly boring. I can appreciate a lot of the complexities in it, but I was never really intruiged, and I just didn't care enough about Will or most of the other characters.
I enjoyed Robin Williams a lot though, he really was an incredible actor and I'm glad I've seen this film just to see his performance in it. It's probably one of the best performances/characterisations I've seen, it's just that overall the film wasn't really for me. I'll give it 6/10.
I found myself getting bored towards the end, plus with the fact Ben Affleck
It was kind of the other way round for me. I preferred the last half of the film to the first half. I was actually tempted to give up halfway through but I kept going because I wanted to see Williams' full performance. (And you're not alone with the Affleck hate, I don't know why but I can't stand him haha!)
Will: Do you like apples?
Clark: Yeah.
Will: Well, I got her number. How do you like them apples?
I loved that bit :joker:

Just watched Good Will Hunting......
This is the first time i've seen this film and i have to admit i was transfixed from the opening scene to the ending, it is a brilliant film and i have to admit that i cried at the part where Sean was telling Will that it wasn't his fault, my heart felt like it were breaking. I felt so sad for Sean as it was apparent that he's quite clearly not come to terms with the death of his wife, i loved how he spoke with so much love and adoration for his wife and the fact he wouldn't change a thing with his life. I felt that in a sense Will helped Sean with his grief, just as Sean helped Will move on. You understand at the beginning of the film that Will has suffered trauma in his childhood and it becomes apparent just how much he was abused as the film goes on, Damon was outstanding playing the part of Will. Just as Williams was outstanding playing the part of Sean. I also got teary when Afflecks character went to pick Will up and he wasn't there #end of an era. What i loved most about this film is the outstanding acting, my favourite scenes were between Williams and Damon. They were intense. It also made me feel sad knowing that we won't get to see the amazing Robin Williams in anymore films:( 10/10

What would everyone define as a classic movie?
Is it a movie that is really popular and has won oscars, or a movie over a certain age?
Is a classic movie in the eye of the beholder?
Shaun
13-04-2016, 07:52 PM
Yeah I think leaving it to open interpretation is the best way forward
I haven't watched the movie this week - I might tonight actually - but off the top of my head I'd have given it a 9/10 when I did watch it. Mostly for Williams' role, but Damon/Driver were pretty good too and I think Ben Affleck gets more hate than he deserves. His career nadir was 98-05 really, this was a solid performance for him and I think he's written off as a director/writer (which has since been amended with his Argo wins).
The story is lovely, and I generally love movies with a teacher/student relationship at the heart of it (no not like that ) - like The History Boys. The soundtrack was nice as well, and it's just rather uplifting. I'll watch it again tonight.
(I'm not sure if you need scores/ratings Ammi but I've given one anyway, wasn't sure if you were doing an aggregate rating thing like we've tried before for albums/movies clubs on here).

I'm not sure, there's loads of movies I would describe as classic that most people would probably disagree with  But as a general rule I'd probably go with what you've said, one that's won awards/has positive reviews and is more than about 10/15 years old maybe? Or a film that has had some kind of significant impact on the industry?

I wouldn't call Good Will Hunting a classic, decent film maybe, but not classic.
It's not a film I could watch over and over again, I've seen it once, and don't intend to watch it again.
Most reviews on here so far are spot on about the stand-out parts of the film, the main one being Williams performance which is fantastic.

If you like unusual films try Perfume - The Story of a Murderer from 2006. It is a sort of cult modern classic.

The film as a whole isn't outstanding, it's good but not amazing ...........until that last 5 minutes. I got great enjoyment from watching my daughter react to it. Her jaw dropped lol Still hasn't been topped in 20 years imo
if it weren't for the ending I'd give it a 7.5/10 but that ending (for me anyway because endings are massively important to me) bumps it right up to a 9/10

The Usual Suspects:
Watched 'The Usual Suspects' last night and it was the second time I've seen it, the first time was a few years ago and I remember loving it. Watching it again, I still loved it, but it's the kind of film where a second viewing is a completely different experience.
There are so many small moments that I enjoyed this time that you can't appreciate on first watch without knowing the ending but aside from those, it just made me appreciate how cleverly written and structured it is. The fact that they have Kint (Spacey) narrating the story is what makes the ending such a surprise because when a movie is narrated, there's almost an unquestionable trust associated with that. You would never think that the narrator is actually lying to you the whole time and telling you a completely false version of events because that's what movies have taught us, so when the rug is pulled up at the end it makes it all the more surprising, which is what sets this apart from the usual type of 'twist ending' movie. I'd go as far to say that it's one of my (if not my absolute) favourite plot twists in any movie, because not only is it so brilliantly executed but it makes you reconsider every scene and every line of the film. Every character, every motivation behind their actions. Just the whole thing! It almost a demands a rewatch so I'm glad I finally have.
It's also quite an odd experience watching it for a second time though, and in some ways frustrating for the same reasons that I mentioned above (knowing that the story you are watching is mostly fabricated by Kint). I did feel at times a little bit like I wanted to know the real events of what happened so it was kind of weird in that respect, watching it knowing that you're being lied to. That being said though, it didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the film, it was just something I found myself thinking at certain points.
Even after watching it for a second time, there's still aspects of it that I'm not totally clear on. I don't know if that's just me, or if I'm not meant to be clear on it all, or if I still don't fully understand it, but regardless, it makes me think that when/if I watch it for a third time, I'll enjoy it just as much and be just as engrossed which is another reason why I think this a brilliant film. Whilst some films I think are confusing for the sake of it, or overly frustrating, this film for me has a perfect balance where although I'm still left confused by some aspects, I know that without some confusion, it simply wouldn't be the same film or the same story, and it's the overall experience of this film that I love. So I still feel satisfied watching it even if I don't completely 'get' it at times
The performance are fantastic too. I can't fault any of them but the stand out ones for me were Benicio del Toro, Stephen Baldwin, Kevin Spacey and Pete Postlethwaite.
I'd give it 9/10.
Loads of favourite moments, but this was the most gifable

Hey everyone :wavey:
Here's my review on The Usual Suspects:
I have to admit that i wasn't that blown away by it, maybe i don't appreciate it for what it is, i found the first hour difficult to understand what was going on, the last half hour was good with more action, yes it was a clever twist but i've seen movies like this before, and they have been better executed. I love Kevin Spacey anyway, in my eyes he can do no wrong, Gabriel Byrnes was excellent as was Stephen Baldwin (loved the line up scene:hehe:). Maybe if i watch it a second time i'll get it more, i found some of the dialogue difficult to understand which is a bug bear of mine, and if i'm really honest i still don't think i know totally what the film was about or the plot line:/ so for me 5/10 but this mark may change if i see it again and gain a better understanding of the film/plotline.

I love his reviews  (even if I don't always agree with him). Such a shame when he died, he was probably my favourite movie reviewer. I'd heard that he disliked this film and had it on his most hated list of that year or something, but I'd never actually read what he had to say about it so thanks for posting this.

The Colour Purple - high on my list of movies I want to rewatch
The Lost Boys- I have been saying this one to Niamh for awhile now
Gone with the Wind- because I have to rewatch it every 5 years or so :hehe:
Love Story (1970)- it has mixed reviews online, but I remember watching it once in the Late 90's and I had sever bronchitis and was a bit of a love sick fool, so I think I might like to view it again with a clear head

Yeah, I didn't have a problem following it tbh
So my review:
While I didn't quite know that the tale he was spinning for the detective was 100% made up... I guessed pretty early on that Verbal was Kaiser. Maybe I thought so because it's what I have come to expect of Kevin Spacey in movies, but I did not believe that it was Keaton at all. I didn't find the movie that hard to follow... except for trying to figure out wtf Benico Del Torro was saying, which apparently is mute because he was a write off character anyways. But over all I thought is was a great movie, and I loved the acting/actors in it.
I will give it a solid 7.7/10 cause I don't know that it deserves status in the 80% bracket. But it was enjoyable and I am glad our little club brought it up to watch

Just finished watching The Usual Suspects a couple of minutes ago:
I was quite impressed! For a film that has such prestige it lived up to high expectations. For a person whose favourite films are amongst Legally Blonde, Mean Girls, Clueless, etc. crime films are actually my guilty pleasure :p
At first I wasn't too sure if I was going to like the film. It normally frustrates me when I can't understand the plot or get a clear idea on the basic structure and what may happen, and there were some random moments I didn't really get what was going on. However, it's definitely one of those films that you come to appreciate once it has finished.
I had already watched the ending of the film before even know what the film was about since I was ware of how famous the end scene was. I'm sorta sad that I did know what was going to happen at the end but it was still amazing nonetheless. It was such a clever idea, and I don't think plot twists were that prominent back in the 80's (I may be completely wrong, lmao). My heart literally skipped a beat when Kujan dropped his mug and realised he'd told lies based on the reports on the wall.
The acting was good. It was pretty cool to see Stephen Baldwin, as all I cold think about afterwards was 'omg he was in Celebrity Big Brother'. Kevin Spacey was fantastic, but he's pretty fantastic in any film. This may have just cemented Spacey as one of my all-time favourite male actors tbh.
Everything from the boat scene playing out onwards was amazing. I still can't believe Verbal was Keyser Soze, like I saw it coming but when the detective said Keaton may have been him it kind of threw me off a little. Keyser Soze as a character actually scared me a little bit :joker:
edit: Ooh I forgot the rating.
I will give The Usual Suspects 8/10

Mean Girls to be the next Classic Movie :clap1:  (That would literally be soooo fetch!)
It's interesting that it was your first watch yet you knew the twist, and you still enjoyed it (and the mug dropping moment still had a kick). I remember thinking the first time I watched it that it would have taken a lot of the enjoyment away if I had have known about it.

Yeah it kind of did, but I never really understood the movie as a whole at the time (at all actually). All I really knew was that some cripple suddenly become able-bodied just after the detective discovered something :joker:

The Craft is one of my all time favourite films  (and so weird you suggested it as I nearly put it on about an ago)... I don't know if it would count as a 'classic' though to be honest? I don't know, depends what everyone else thinks, and how rigidly we're sticking to the 'classic' theme  But if we don't you should definitely watch it anyway, it's great!
I'd like to see people review Mulholland Drive, now that's a film that will make you think (that's if you get what's going on), I'm sure people will take different things from that film and people will have differing opinions of the film. It's also probably one of the greatest pieces of motion picture in the 21st century.
I nominate that, if not then Sling Blade.

Let's go with Pretty In Pink in that case. I've never heard of it to be honest so I've got no expectations at all. I'll try and watch it today or tomorrow because I'm going on holiday on Sunday but if I don't manage it by then, I'll watch it when I get back.

Also, when I did watch it last I made my sig a gif of the movie and no one knew what it was... it was the most iconic scene... :oh:... so I am all for the promotion of the whole forum watching this movie, one of the best of the 80's imo.
Plus, I feel a little like Andie lately

Hi Mokka:wavey: i have twins both are coming up for 15, one of my girls is mad on the 80's, she loved The Breakfast Club and she loved Pretty in Pink (as we've just watched it:hee:)
She told me that she thinks she was born in the wrong decade, and with what the youth of today has i completely agree with her, the 80's were brilliant even though i were only 5 in 1980 and 14 in 1989 i can remember looking at the adults as they walked by going to the pub on a Friday and Saturday night thinking how cool they all looked:flutter:

Pretty in Pink my review:
I loved this film, it's completely nostalgic for me, the fab soundtrack, the great hairstyles and the cool clothes, loved Ducky lip syncing Try a Little Tenderness, this was the highlight for me:love: it touched on unrequited love (i remember a boy who had feelings for me but i only saw him as a friend) and the class system (i come from an unprivileged background so could empathise with Andie to a certain extent as there's a lot of pressure put on kids to fit in and many kids do stick with 'their own kind' which is a shame, so i actually think this film is very relevant in todays society), my daughter could associate with Andies unique style as she doesn't follow trends and chooses to be her own person, a great brat pack movie 8/10

Yes, I was a child of the 80's myself... But my sisters were teens in the 80's and I lived vicariously through them. I was the youngest so I theived their clothes and shoes and such when they weren't looking...and I got them to backcomb my hair for me for dates at the roller rink and everything :flutter:

Pretty In Pink
Where to start. I did not find it as much as a chick flick as I thought it was going to be, sure it had the love story part, but it was more of a 80's film, which I like in films/music as I like the 80's, and wish I grew up during that time. With the characters, I liked Annies boss the most; she defines 80's, her style, her over the top hairstyle that changes every 20 mins of the films. I like Annie as well, it was good to see her go from someone who was quite ashamed of herself about her lifestlye, to by the end not giving a ****. I also liked Blane, sure he was sometimes misguided, but I think his heart was in the right place, and I was definitely rooting for him and Annie to be together (not that I care about the love part)
I hated Duckie, sorry but I get he was in love with Annie, but the guy was clearly a psychopath, potential stalker/Serial Killer. He was just a twat. I was half expecting the film to turn into a slasher movie and Duckie ends up killing all of Blanes snobby friends (lets be honest they should have died anyway).
Overall I enjoyed it more then I thought I would. Its better then St Elmos, but I consider Breakfast Club and 16 Candles better films. Still I would rate it 4/5.
It will be interesting to see who everyone thinks Annie should have ended up with? Blane, Duckie, or should she had said **** off to both of them and stayed single, potentially her and her boss going all thelma and louise?

interesting fact.... The original screen play had her going off with Duckie... They changed it when they filmed it.
And I think you are being rather hard on the Duckster... He was a teenager in love, sure with very little selfawareness, but how many teens do have it?? He was Andies lifelong friend, she didn't just suffer him, she did love having his friendship, just not an attraction
I mean I am team Duckie all the way... Especially since his hair at the grad was so on point, and Blain's looked like some weird helmet or something
I rewatched last night but didn't want to give my review until others had a chance... But a solid 8.5/10 for me.

Just finished. I'm so glad someone suggested this film
Well, it was a John Hughes film so you can't really go wrong in that regard, and overall the film lived up to expectations and was very enjoyable. I loved Andie as a character and her relationships with most of the others (her dad, Duckie, Blane (who I found oddly attractive), Iona). I can't really say who my favourite person was but I really liked them all in different ways (except the assholes but obviously we weren't supposed to like them :p). Iona was a really fun character, and I loved how quirky and cool she was. Duckie was adorable although I did find him a little weird at the beginning, but then when it was revealed that they were friends for 8 years so their relationship made a lot more sense to me, lmao.
The class-divide being an integral part of the film also came across very Romeo and Juliet, and I'm really pleased that Andie and Blane got a happy ending (:creep:). I understand why people would want Duckie and Andie together, but I love them as friends and only friends. Also, what types of people would you call the two sides? Like, is it preppy and alternative, or was there another name for these groups of people? I'm not as much into American sub-culture as I'd like to be.
I kind of wish the mean girls got more of a comeuppance, but oh well. I suppose the main douche's story arc came full circle so that's good enough for me. It was also quite strange that Andie's high-school friend just dissapeared after 30 minutes of the film.
I would give this film a 7, almost an 8. The costuming was a fantastic highlight, very cool and trendy especially on Andie and Iona's behalf (and Duckie at the prom :p). I don't think this is as good as The Breakfast Club, but I can definitely see why this film is considered a classic. I definitely need to watch more John Hughes films as I haven't seen Sixteen Candles, St.Elmo's Fire or Weird Science. Actually, after looking up his films there's so many I haven't watch, and I didn't even know he produced Home Alone (I haven't really watched that either ).
Can't wait to see what next film wll be :)
..Pretty in Pink...
..an enjoyable second watch..(thank you for the choice, Ruby....Molly Ringwold was such an endearing 80's actress and portrayed teenage angst so well...I can understand Jon's 'stalker-ish' feelings about Duckie but I think that it was important to the story to portray him that way to show the reverse type snobbery as well../that he resented Blane so much for winning Andie's heart, the 'richie' who had everything, why should he have Andie as well but obviously realising in the end that Blane was a nice guy and indeed worthy of Andie's love and he was what would make her happy...as she said to her dad, if she judged the richies for having money, then she would be doing what they were doing in their judgement of those who didn't have...
..I loved Annie Potts as Iona and Harry Dean Stanton as Andie's dad....a great cast, a cute movie, an excellent soundtrack and a very nostalgic 7/10.....
..I've added North by Northwest as Marsh suggested ..and also To Kill a Mockingbird and Blade Runner...

After reading others reviews i wanted to add that i also loved Iona and her wacky style, especially her spikey punk hairdo, and wish Andie's friend had been in the film more as she seemed a great character, i thought her relationship with her dad was something special, i don't know how i feel about her ending up with Blaine, i'm glad she didn't end up with Ducky as it was obvious she had no romantic feelings towards him, and if she'd have ended up with him then it would be her sticking to 'her own kind' which i hate the thought of that, but then ending up with Blaine after he'd judged her not good enough for him also sat uncomfortably with me, even though he was reacting to his so called friends advice/ultimatum. He realised his friend was just being a twat because he'd wanted her and she'd rejected him, so he actually came to his senses and followed his heart, as she followed her heart and in the end it was great to see Ducky letting her go, meaning he truly loved her as all he wanted for her was her happiness:)
And also can't wait for the next movie:love:
Marsh.

...so, a bit of a Tick Flick eh, Jon...
..The Fly..
..this is definitely a movie which I wouldn't have re-watched if it hadn't been for the movie club..not because it's not a great movie but more because of the horror element of it and horror movies not being my thing generally...I am though really glad that I watched it again and thoroughly enjoyed it...Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis are delightful and perfect as the doomed lovers..(although I question her sense in going back to his apartment in the first place, when she didn't know him../silly, silly....)..Geena just always seems to glide effortlessly through in the movies she's in and Jeff hams it up beautifully in contrast, so they're a perfect pairing...although the special effects are probably quite basic by today's standards, I still found the Fly mutant completely terrifying...the arm wrestling bit was grim, as was the bit were he regurgitated on the editor guy to dissolve him into nice bite-size portions...
..anyways, a really good watch/a really horrific watch and one of the best re-makes of any movie, I think...so a buzzin' 8/10 and thank you for the choice, Jon....because I would never have re-watched this otherwise and am glad I did...

I disagree with you saying the special effects are basic by todays standards, I actually found them amazing effects, much better then todays forced CGI effects. I pretty much agree with you, great film to watch, I remember enjoying it before, but this was like 7 years ago now, and I am glad I rewatched it. Gina Davis is a great actress in this, and the melting scene was corny but great to watch. 4/5 for me. Only criticism is that I foolish made a salad during my view and of course while eating it, the scene of him throwing up acid and making the boss guys hand and foot melt was shown :joker:

My 'Pretty In Pink' review
When I sat down to watch this I thought I might dislike it because I don't usually like romantic comedy type films, but I thought it's sometimes good to watch things out my comfort zone and it had good recommendations from you lot, so I thought I'd give it a go, and in some ways I was really pleasantly surprised. Firstly, Andie. I absolutely adored her. I loved that she makes her own clothes  (I went through a phase at uni where I did the same thing lol :shame:), and I love that she's 18 but dresses like she's 60! I kind of wonder if that was an allegory (if that's the right word?) for her maturity (get me using proper 'reviewer' type words :hee:)
Andie's dad and Iona were also great characters. I didn't care about Blane, or his and Andie's relationship, I didn't find him likeable or interesting to watch. I also didn't care much about Duckie. He was too much of a 'stock movie character' if that makes sense, 2-Dimensional, and I felt like the movie was really pushing to have me feel sorry for him because of his infatuation with Andie, but I just didn't care. It wasn't that I disliked him or anything, I just felt like he was there for the sake of it, and he had lots of fun/quirky surface characteristics, but no depth to make me see him as anything other than a prop. Normally I wouldn't care to much about things like that but my enjoyment of this movie rested on the relationships and the depth of the characters because a romance storyline really isn't enough for me to enjoy a film.
Andie's dad on the other hand I found extremely watchable. His and Andie's relationship was my favourite thing about this movie. Had the central focus been about them and their relationship, and had his character been developed more (as well as the history of the mother expanded on) I would have absolutely loved that. I felt like there was so much potential there that was pushed to the side in favour of the romantic storyline which didn't interest me.
I suppose this was my biggest issue watching the movie, that although there were some great elements that I appreciated, I was kind of frustrated watching it because the elements that I enjoyed the most were generally sidelined to the bits that I had no (or very little) interest in. It touched on a lot of really interesting things such as social status, the mother walking out on her husband and child, the fathers apathy towards work, and Andie's strength as a person and resilience. And yet the central plotline seemed to just be 'will she go to the prom?'
I wasn't keen on the ending. I didn't like that she went running after Blane. I thought he was a jerk (yes he apologised to her but am I meant to believe that he's suddenly changed his whole perspective on class and status because of Andie when he's only known her 5 minutes and there's been no development to him?) and I kind of hoped that when Duckie told Andie that she should go after Blane, she would say something fiercely independent and be like '**** him', basically, and have it end with the two of them (Duckie and Andie) as friends, at the prom, without having or needing romantic interests to complete them.
Molly Ringwald's performance was fantastic though, she was extremely watchable. Had it been a different actress in that role (and had my watch not been because of the movie club lol) I don't think I would have finished it tbh. For what it was, I'm sure it was a brilliant film, but I give it 6/10 based on my own personal taste. I would definitely recommend it to other people who enjoy films like this though.
Can't wait to watch The Fly!

The Fly review:
I loved this film, Jeff Goldblum is amazing as the nutty scientist, and Gina Davis is a dream to watch, they played their characters so well. His (Seth's) transformation into a fly was shocking! I found this film mesmerizing and a joy to watch, i thought the effects were great, parts of the film were gruesome but not overly traumatic:laugh: i'm so pleased DTM chose this film. I find the 'pushing the scientific boundaries' so interesting. I'm giving this film a worthy 9/10

My 'The Fly' review:
Love this film. Jeff Goldblum is fantastic in it, even when he's unrecognisable under all the prosthetics, he still portrays the character so well and makes you feel for the 'monster' that he's become. Geena Davis is great too, I agree with Ammi that it probably wasn't the wisest thing her going back with him that first night, and I don't understand why he would have shown her his invention either with her being a journalist and him not wanting it to be written about, that's probably the only plot hole (besides the fact that it involves teleportation and a human morphing into a giant fly but y'know what I mean )
The gruesome scenes are really gruesome but it's gore that has a place, rather than being just for the sake of it, and it's weird that a film can make you think "oh so that's what it'd be like if a person turned into a fly" :joker: and for it to still not come off as silly or unnecessarily gross. It's testament to how well made it is, and how it could have failed horribly with different production/writing/performances. The final scene is heartbreaking, just a really emotional and powerful climax.
I give it 9/10. I can't fault it really, the only reason it doesn't get 10 is because, well, it isn't Muriel's Wedding... so
And a fun movie fact!: The phrase 'Be afraid, be very afraid' actually originated in this movie.
(Also, I would have loved a sequel that explored the scientific ramifications of his invention rather than the one we got. Like would the device had been refined and led to the fusion of other human/animal hybrids etc... for military purposes perhaps? I'm just thinking out loud now but that would make for a great movie )

I finally watched the Fly !!!!
So as I said, I have seen it before, and it was once a required watch in a Ethics in Science course I took ... because obviously the plot line follows what really happens in the scientific community  ... and I guess that may be why, while I found lots of laugh out loud moments in it, and Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis were both amazing in it, I really don't like the movie. I has too many holes for my to think of as plausible... Jamie mentioned a couple that "bug" me... but from a perspective of how the computer programming went, and the science behind the device, it's invention... the believablity of it all just is to weak for me to not scoff the whole way through. I guess that is why it just isn't my type of film. But I did laugh and I did love the acting.. so a 6/10 from me.
(Also, I generally end up hating any movie or book a professor makes me over analyze )

It's interesting that you mentioned the computer programming... that's what I do for a living and it's something that I completely ignored in the film  I felt like I had to though to suspend belief. I'll admit, when he had the breakthrough about the flesh and then explained it, I facepalmed a little bit, because although they tried to make it sound technical, it was basically "All I need to do is teach the computer to get excited" and it's like, oh right ok then, just the simple task of teaching it human emotion then  But I can forgive that because like you say, it just wasn't your type of film, whereas it was my type of film. It's interesting we can watch the same thing but allow/ignore/challenge different aspects of it. One of the reasons I'm loving this movie club to be honest.

I liked it, good cast, and good soundtrack, and very funny in parts. Problem is I found nearly every character very unlikeable, even Muriel was someone hard to root for. A tad too girly for my liking as well, but I am just being picky. 3.5/5

Muriels Wedding review:
I have to start with the fact that i've seen Muriels Wedding a number of times, it has a great sound track, however, the one thing that i spotted last night was how selfish Muriel is, she doesn't seem to have a relationship with her siblings, she overlooks the apathy her mum is feeling, and yet this is something i can connect with on a personal level, and is why i believe that most teenagers are selfish and out for themselves (note that i said most!). She has a deep longing to fit in, even at the the expense of her parents bank balance! The theme of this movie is about acceptance for who you are, she just wants to be part of something, even if it's girls who hate her! She has a longing to prove she's a someone after being told for so many years that she's lazy and useless, and the butt of jokes. Que Rhonda as her (Muriels) saviour, her friend who shows her how to live and be independant. It's a great film with an undertone of sadness that i could connect with, she wants to be so much more than she feels, she wants to be so much more than others think she is, she wants to win, to prove she is a someone, that she's not a nothing, and in the end she begins her life accepting her flaws and ready to embrace life honestly with Rhonda. 9/10
..Muriel's Wedding...
....hmmm, I didn't see Muriel as a selfish person, Ruby...I think that she loved her mum but her whole life of feeling a 'success' was to find someone to love her../to marry her and that's what her mum had and yet, she was a terribly unhappy person...I think that Muriel avoided facing that because if she did, it would shatter her dreams and leave her with nothing../just leave her feeling hopeless...to face that marriage to someone../the wrong person could be something that could destroy a person as in her mother's situation with her dad...and I think that she loved her siblings as well but all of their worlds with their dad were not that were love was ever shown../ever demonstrated...there was no affection in the family because the father only ever measured 'success' or 'failure'....and obviously, he was the one thing that was bringing that 'failure' because he didn't make his children feel loved/believed in etc...
..I enjoyed this movie much more this time just because I have known people like Muriel...people who have no belief in themselves.../no self confidence..and who see that being achieved in something it won't ever be unless they realise their own beauty, just as they are..(quoting a line from Bridget Jones...)...it's quite a dark movie with her mum's depression and eventual taking of her life and Rhonda's cancer but that only goes to make those feel good moments more emotional and lovely...Muriel and Rhonda singing Dancing Queen.....putting the 'mean girls' in their place and the ending when they finally escaped Porpoise Spit with Muriel finally finding her confidence and self-belief, without the reliance of anyone else...great Abba soundtrack, great characters and all perfectly balanced to make a pretty great movie..so I would say a lovely 8/10...
..thank you Jamie and Mokka for the choice....
...actually it may not be considered a classic as such but because I love Toni Collette so much, I'd like to put Little Miss Sunshine on the list as well, it's my favourite of all of her movies....

..thank you Jamie and Mokka for the choice....
Muriel lacked consideration for her parents by stealing their money, putting her own needs first, this makes her selfish. She also put her own needs first regarding Rhonda by deciding to get married to the South African, again putting her own needs first, with no consideration for how Rhonda was going to survive on her own. She thought happiness lay within the fact of getting married, yet her own mother was married and a complete doormat, totally unappreciated and her dad was an arsehole, and yet she didn't see this, the fact that her own mum and dad were unhappy. As i said this is a movie about self acceptance and i love this movie, it just seemed to jump out at me this time that she comes across as selfish. She realises true happiness doesn't involve a man and a wedding dress, but with her true friend Rhonda. The movie resonated with me on so many levels. The selfishness, the running away from problems, thinking that somethings going to be better when it actually isn't, trying to be someone you aren't, it's all part of life which is why i love this movie so.

..I guess for me, the selfish character was her father...obviously with his affair for many years with Deidre Chambers and how they had always pre-arranged that she would 'accidently' turn up on family occasions so he couldn't even give those small times to his family ..and had to flaunt his feelings for someone else so blatantly with his wife...also his lack of acknowledgement for his children unless they were to become in his eyes, 'successful'...the only time he spoke with any pride about Muriel was when he thought she had earned enough money to pay for the holiday herself..(so that bit did make me smile, that she had actually used his money and it seemed like a great karma thing....)...but he was most selfish in being perfectly happy to leave his wife and make her feel worthless..in fact he was quite cruel about it, in voicing her 'worthlessness'/uselessness as a wife and mother, as he saw it..but was quite happy, more than happy to hand over the care of their children to her/this 'useless person' so that he could have his life with Deidre, that's how little value he placed on them as well because she was obviously not capable of caring for them ..the 'inconvenience' was her dying because the deal wasn't and never had involved 'playing parents' but he hadn't given his children any self-belief to be independent from parenting and his wife's depression had prevented her from that also.....I liked the last scene with him and Muriel though because I felt that he would maybe become a better person and parent in the future../well I'd like to think that anyway...)...

I completely agree Ammi about her dad!
I think the beauty about this movie is that even with all her flaws (and she has many as we all do:laugh:) she is still the character that we root for, the character that is so well developed, imo no other actress could have played her other than Toni Collette, and the fact that her character probably resonates with a lot of people at some point in their lives, in some weird way i can see a lot of my past in this movie.

I watched again last night... for the 585th time ( @ Jamie)... but I wanted to see some other posts before I said anything
I watched this movie for the first time in the theaters the year it came out, with two of my 4 sisters. Being with them was what made this movie so impacting at the time, because we grew up in Muriel's house practically... with a father who never really did anything for the family but couldn't stop throwing in your face what very little he had done for the family... and a mother who went into a place of deep depression in her 40's to the point where she was much like Muriel's mother in the tea making scene... just not there. The three of us walked out of that theater with just astonished faces... and we looked at each other and just started laughing at how real and honest and funny and dead on the nail the story was to us. It's a moment I will never forget.
So, while Muriel's actions may seem selfish to some, my view is they are two fold. Firstly, she was raised without being taught how not to be selfish. That was not a loving and caring environment the kids were in, and by the time she was at adult hood... no one had shown her or taught her better life skills. And secondly, she had to be selfish to get herself out of that **** hole of an environment. She was trapped in it, her mother was trapped in it, etc. etc. and while her choices weren't necessarily good or right, they were the ones that got her out and to realize the potential and reality of her own existence and self worth
Aside from all that over analysis of the characters... I have always loved this movie for being real, and honest and too funny to put into words... and messy because life is messy so why do we make it seem different in movies?? Is Muriel a good person? who cares. She is a relatable person imo, and I never cared for weddings or put much weight in the whole find a sole mate to be happy theory... but I still relate to her.
It also has my favourite love scene of all time.. Where Muriel shows up for Rhonda in the end and Rhonda says this
http://38.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lxol70PC7s1qdojzho1_r1_500.gif
And they get into the cab and say goodbye to ****ty Porpoise Spit. That's what real love and friendship is ... better than Dancing Queen
10/10
..maybe it's just me but I don't see Muriel as selfish in her character, I see her as self-preserving ...her 'wedding world', her dreams of being married etc felt a bit like an 'imaginary friend' type thing that a child can have or an imaginary world that they retreat into, to shield themselves from their environment, which is so unhappy..a father who made her feel worthless, made them all feel worthless..friends who also made her feel worthless..a mum who was unable to help her in any way because of her depression and down-trodden siblings..her world of fantasy was the only escape she had to it all and she tried, her one chance to make those fantasies come true, or to escape them for a short while and experience 'a dream' in her holiday..which led her to Rhonda and to losing her self-loathing..and in doing that, not only did her life change but it would then enable her to be what her family needed, in something positive in their worlds...
...so sadly, there are many 'Muriels' out there, where someone's family../home should be their place of refuge and safety..their comfort..but it's the place which feeds all of their insecurities instead..it prevents them from being who they are and loving who they are.../seeing their beauty...
...over-thinking now, really...

You're right there are many Muriels out there, which is also why i love the film, it makes me feel like i'm not alone.
You could say i were Muriel, i know i was selfish, (and i hate to admit this) i stole, and i lied, but i came from a house where there were no love, no money, all my friends had a better life than me, my dad was an arsehole, and my mum the down trodden wife who went on to commit suicide. The fact that i weren't close to any of my siblings, in fact we pretty much hated each other, but that's all we knew.
I escaped my family by running off with my boyfriend, trying to find out who i were, where i belonged, and through his and his familys love and plus my moral compass grew stronger once i'd left home, so i can totally relate to Muriel and all her flaws:)
And i'm glad we are fellow over thinkers:laugh:

...awww Ruby....yeah I really do see it as quite a dark movie and not a 'chick flick' type thing..although there are aspects of that as well obviously but it's intrinsically a very sad movie..(with a satisfying ending..)...
..what your friends had ..(in your eyes because it may not have been so in reality..)...was love and acceptance and what you feel that you stole, was that and noting to do with money at all..and your 'lies' were not lies but more, dreams and wishes...I believe that your 'moral compass' was always strong rather than grew strong and I doubt that you have a selfish part in your body..we are what our environment makes us and all of us victims of that...and our 'flaws'..your flaws..?...they are what makes us and you beautiful because it's not that we have them, it's that we learn the strengths they give us..'perfection' would b a completely disabling thing to be......

Muriel's Wedding thoughts:
I think sleeping on this film (and reading the other reviews in this thread) has allowed me to appreciate it a lot more for what it is. I still enjoyed it beforehand but I feel that because I was expecting something completely different (a romance/chick-flick type of film) it was a bit strange to watch. I never would have guessed it to be so hard-hitting, but I do love deep and meaningful films the best so I loved it in that regard.
The cast was great. I agree with whoever said that Toni Collette is the only viable actress to portray Muriel. She was perfect for the part and emobied the character so well that you forget she's a fairly well-known actress outside of her role. I also loved the actress who played Rhonda. They made such a good double act. Everyone did so well in making the story so convincing and moving.
The story itself was emotional. I agreed with Ruby to begin with in the respect that I found Muriel to be quite selfish when it came to taking the money her Mother gave her, and I didn't like the scene where she finally got married but didn't even notice her Mother whilst walking out the church. That was especially sad considering her Mother's fate at the end of the film. Hearing everybody's explanation has made me realise that her reaction to it all was actually quite natural, since Muriel was never really respected (especially by her Father) by most people so why would she respect them. She finally had the opportunity to prove herself, and it was the correct decision because she would never have met Rhonda and probably would've came back and took the grief of her father if she hadn't (imo).
Muriel's transformation was one I relate with to; coming from a small town and having bigger hopes and dreams that are maybe out of my league but wanting to pursue them regardless, and I think everyone has had an identity crissi similar to Muriel once in their life (It's Mariel not Muriel, so simple yet effective). On an unrelated note, I found the sex scene absolutely hilarious and it was one of my favourite parts of the film. Her Sister was also an excellent part of the story. I loved her saying "you're terrible, Muriel." and have kept saying it again and again this morning :p
I did feel that the pace of the film was a little haphazard and it felt like random things were happening at random times (meeting with her Dad although she never wanted to, getting married to the South African swimmer who didn't like her but then suddenly did?). It was quite confusing at times, and why did her relationship with that other guy randomly stop and come to no real conclusion? However, I do feel that this film would be even better on a re-watch, and I think that's why so many people in this thread adore this film because it's one that you can watch over and over again and come to value it more and more.
The best part of the film for me was the general ABBA theme. I adored listening to the songs (I'm a big fan!) and how they applied to Muriel's life. The scene with Muriel and Rhonda was excellent, and I love that it ended with them two driving away from Porpoise Spit with Dancing Queen playing in the background. It was very poetic.
I'm stucking between giving this film a very high 6 or a low 7, but I think I'm going to give it a 7/10 because it is a very well-respected film and there were fantastic moments throughout with lovely message.

..I think that's the thing with this, it's often that movie clubs don't last too long so the best way is for us all to feel as though we don't have to watch every movie but can just dip in and out any time...
Thanks for going ahead with Forrest Gump, guys
...thank you for suggesting it young Braden....it's a bit of a longer movie so I have snacks ready and it's a long time since I watched it myself...
Forrest Gump? :amazed:
...welcome, Tom.....
..Forrest Gump.....
..I'll straight off give this a perfect 10/10 and thank you Braden.....it's funny how you can forget so many of the details with movies that all add to their perfection...him being the inspiration for Elvis' pelvic moves....for John Lennon's, Imagine...for the smiley, have a nice day slogan...and how charmed his life was, investing a bit in some fruit company'....one of the best lines in the movie for me was 'so I was invited to the White House again and I went again'...there were so many moments in this when I felt emotional../cried and equally as many that made me smile...obviously there are dark sides to his story with Jenny's abuse as a child, how that led to her never feeling any self worth and the Vietnam War...but through the eyes of Forrest Gump, there were always uplifting elements...as well as Tom Hanks, a great cast with Robin Wright and Gary Sinise especially ..and also Sally Fields is amazing as always...well everything about it is perfect, the soundtrack..the trip through history and the perfect Forrest Gump and his perfect heart....so yes, a perfect 10/10...

Forrest Gump
Love this film, love Tom Hanks, it's such a great story, i love the way they tie in so many major events in there and stick Forrest right in the middle of everything.
This film is pretty flawless for me, I don't have anything at all negative to say about it, it's the perfect mix of funny, sad and very very sweet
9.5/10
