It’s easy to see why we are a bankrupt country when financial scandals like this one are unearthed on a practically daily basis..

We are a soft touch and have been for as long as I can remember.. remember even our own politicians are helping themselves to the country’s coffers

What this actually means is that Sunak and the Conservatives are once again clamping down on what can qualify as legal aid for those that can't afford it. They have already hammered it so that poor people can't be represented properly, now they are attempting to squeeze it again. If you are part of the rich elite, you can still bring anything to court that you feel like

"There are still shockwaves from seismic events," says a former cabinet minister - "that's what we're living through now." Boris Johnson might not have stitched prawns into the hems of his expensive curtains in No 10, but as we've seen over the past couple of days, the leftovers from his time in office can still cause a nasty stink.

He's taking a big gamble here.
It's not illegal to apply for asylum.
So to dismiss genuine claims in haphazard hurried fashion as this policy may contain.
Is a dangerous gamble.

Of course the illigal crossings need to be stopped but where is HIS International support for these measures.
Where is he going to send possibly multi thousands of people who will inevitably number many who have genuine claims for asylum.
Pleasing the loudest less tolerable noises In a Country and/or Party.
Doesn't usually end in likely long term success.

Of course he is right to set out to deal with the illegal crossings but that shouldn't be at the coast of compassion and human rights justice.
That's what really good government should be about.
This is a policy really that should be done with universal approval of all Parties in parliament.
Dealing with people's lives are too important to only set out to please more aggressive views.

I totally agree.
However while the crossing is illegal absolutely.
A genuine claim for asylum is not.

To say someone cannot ever in their lifetime claim asylum because of the criminal gangs exploiting people in these crossings.
That's where I part company (cautiously) with this policy.
Because I can support Sunak's efforts to do much more on this.

Certainly to stop the criminals organising these crossings.
I accept that's a big ask.
However you are more knowledgeable as you see this on your doorstep so to speak.
So I take your points on board too.

This will never work. They're gonna be allowed to UK shores but then sent back.

Wouldn't it be best if they never came in the first place? Stopped the boats as they were leaving France. And what of these boats. Why are they allowed to come here and go back again to pick up more people. WHY aren't the boats seized????

Would be very expensive if they had to buy a new boat for each journey.

This country is way too spineless. The rot has set in now. The UK is a doormat. We let old people die in the cold because they can't afford to put the heating on, and yet no expense spared for people just coming into the country.

We have young mothers and their children living in damp, cold housing conditions. Why aren't they put in expensive hotels? The whole set up in this country is quite frankly wrong and revolting.

Well full credit to Sunak if it does work.
However if there's a lack of proper justice and compassion issues then it won't deserve to.

If there's international support to try to assist with it though then that will be a strong bonus element.
The criminals who exploit the people to get them into those boats/dinghies whatever.
Those are the real criminals who need to be got rid of.

The issue is not going to be justly and compassionately dealt with if divisions and prejudicial scaremongering takes over any debate on the serious issue of the criminal led boat crossings.

I'd support the governnent trying to bring the crossings to an end.
WITHIN international law however.
Within long standing for decades laws otherwise we start going down a very dangerous road indeed.

I am this morning really concerned at the shocking rhetoric from Braverman however.
I don't have confidence she is going to set out to do this in the just and right way.
Inflating numbers as she is starting to do.
Sounds a worrying and very sinister agenda she has indeed to me.

I'm still waiting to see all those millions of Turkish immigrants Farage and the leave campaign flooded out in the EU campaign.
When they said Turkey would be in the EU very soon.
Which all NEVER happened at all.

I despair at times looking at people with the views of Braverman having power over other human beings lives.
If Sunak wants this done rright he needs to get her to tone down her new shocking and unsavoury rhetoric on this otherwise she may take us down to the international pariah route of human rights
I would be dismayed and shocked if the majority of the UK wanted to even risk that.
Is that where this crisis of boat crossings could take us to under this home Secretary and this PM.

I'd hope Sunak wouid want to take the divisive, scaremongering rhetoric out of the issue and want to do the job, within all laws, rights and with compassion.
Or is Bravernan to lead the way on this.
If so, this ANOTHER of this governments ( of how many is it now),immigration ideas that deserves to also fail.

the bill is making the home secretary directly responsible for shipping out the illegal crossers so, yes, her job is basically on the line if she doesn't get results

So could Sunak be deviously setting her up for a fall then.
I'd support him on that one.

However what will this do to the criminals who set up these boat crossings.
They bring them over, dump the people here then head off to bring more and more.

This bill does nothing as to those criminals, other than hope this threat deters people being manipulated by those criminals.
Without those criminals people could only apply for asylum by the set up legal system.
Which needs and has needed for a good while, to be intensively speeder up too.

they have had agreements with France, paid them big money to stop the criminals shipping people out on boats, to no effect. The only way to stop it now is for the illegal immigrant to know they will get shipped off somewhere else

I just think with living breathing people, you cannot just ship people off.
With no understanding or compassion or real justice.
They aren't bags of rubbish.
The criminals yes, the deviously manipulated people NO.

It will be a sad and bad day for the UK if this government starts really doing that.
Against international human rights laws.
A dangerous road that would be to even think about to go on let alone do.

I'll hope for better to come from meeting with Macron in France this week.
To hopefully start to stop this hateful rhetoric of Braverman to gain more momentum.

..... and people in government trusted with power over others lives should be warned about their rhetoric they spout out too, like Bravernan.
With her offensive ever inflating misleading figures and facts she throws out.

After all she really shouldn't be a Minister at all after her previous incompetence and negligence.

Lineker however should know better as to what is appropriate to say.
Although depending on how far Sunak allows Bravernan and his government to go on this issue as to international lawbreaking.
Lineker could be proven possibly more right.
I've no time for Lineker myself.
I've even less than NO time for heartless hardliners like Bravernan.

I've just turned on James O'Brien just to see what he's saying about it all.

And it's the same old record, on repeat. We're all racists. We all hate black people. We're like the Nazis.

But this clown has no solution at all. He doesn't live anywhere near where these people from the boats go into hotels. In his mind, anyone who has a different opinion to him, you're a racist. He says racist so often it doesn't have any meaning to him. It's like saying racist to anything like I like my coffee white and not black.

Then we have all these people ringing his show to say 'yes it's all racist and wrong'. But no solution from them either. Pathetic.

I don't think this latest policy from the government will work, but it's not racist. O'Brien knows it isn't. But he's so dumb that is all he can say.

But of course he's paid to be like that. To stir the sh**.

It's always possibly a good thing to pool ideas.
If he's altered his position, taken on board the thinking of the opposition party in part, plus got the agreement and cooperation of the President of France.
Then that can only be more like progress and better politics.

Rishi Sunak announces £5bn extra defence spending during US trip

Downing Street said £3bn from the extra spending would be earmarked to support the pact, along with boosting industrial infrastructure and servicing UK submarines.

The remaining £1.9bn will be used to replace weapons sent to Ukraine and improve the UK's munitions infrastructure.

Of the new money, £1.98bn will be spent this year and £2.97bn next year, with defence spending then reviewed again after 2025.

Regarding the goverment's drive to get the Over 50s and mums 'back to work', I was talking to a friend's dad today. He's 58 and has been on the dole for a year. Can't even get an interview, despite being a manager of a local department store for 10 years.

He said to me today, 'where are these jobs the government wants people like me and mothers to do? I've looked, I can't find them.'

He was also told by the dole to apply for work from home jobs, which are nothing more than filling surveys out. 'One job bragged of paying 10p per survey.':shocked::shocked: :shocked::shocked:

I agree. I was fuming when I heard all these migrants in hotels are going into flats and houses. No mention about our ex British servicepeople who are sleeping on the streets.

Or like a friend of mine who's been on the council housing list for NINE YEARS.

This is such a soft country. These migrants can enter illegally and get into a top hotel that's normally used for birthday parties and wedding receptions. Then they can JUMP THE HOUSING queue into nice homes and flats.

Makes me sick. :mad::fist:

When he says Maths does he actually mean Arithmetic?

how can they study arithmetic until they are 18?

The other thing is that a proportion of the population just can't do maths, so forcing them to do something that they have no aptitude for is not going to prepare them better for life after school

I've already told my daughter she doesn't need to take Higher Maths if she doesn't want to, will happily fight her school on it. Good Universities are requiring 5 A's these days and they do NOT specify Maths beyond Nat5. She'll easily walk an A in most subjects but maths is her weakest subject ... if they "force" maths on kids many will end up with AAAAB and the redbricks/places like Edinburgh aren't accepting that these days. Daft, when there are plenty of other more relevant subjects for a lot of degrees.

But yes other than that, you learn all the functional maths you'll ever need by 14/15. The more advanced stuff, unless going into a HEAVY science or engineering career, is a complete waste of time. And literally a COMPLETE waste - I can't even remember most if it? I'd 100% fail a higher maths exam if I took one today, and I got an A when I sat it (21 years ago D: ).

Case in point though - you can do a masters-level research degree complete with full use of stats packages and analysis, and you won't need any maths beyond Nat5 (/standard grade/GCSE) level.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is being investigated by Parliament's standards watchdog over a possible failure to declare an interest.

Mr Sunak is being investigated over whether a declaration of interest was "open and frank", under rules set out by the commissioner for standards.

The BBC understands the probe relates to a childcare firm his wife has shares in.

The commissioner decides whether an MP has broken rules after an inquiry.

A Downing Street spokesperson said: "We are happy to assist the commissioner to clarify how this has been transparently declared as a ministerial interest."

Last month, Mr Sunak faced questions over shares his wife holds in Koru Kids, a childcare agency that could benefit from a new policy unveiled in the spring Budget.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced a pilot of payments for new childminders, with more for those who sign up through agencies.

Mr Sunak's wife, Akshata Murty, was listed as a shareholder in one of those agencies, Koru Kids, as recently as 6 March.

When MPs questioned Mr Sunak on childcare providers last month, Mr Sunak said "all my disclosures are declared in the normal way".

The commissioner for standards is an independent officer who investigates allegations that MPs have breached Parliament's code of conduct.

Following investigation, if they think the allegation represents a breach of the code, they can put such cases before MPs sitting on the Committee on Standards, who can decide any sanctions.
