from the bbc news feed .....

I’ve been getting some reaction from Conservative MPs, after the brief press conference from the prime minister.

One of her supporters - you read that right - said "that was the worst press conference I have seen in a decade and a half."

Another MP, who voted for Truss in the leadership election, said "I had my hands over my eyes" during the speech.

Fans of Little Britain will get his reference: "It was like ‘computer says no."

And it hasn’t taken long for speculation to build that Jeremy Hunt may become a caretaker leader – ‘a Hunt coronation’ says one MP.

"Hunt is well placed to succeed her."

One long-standing critic of hers says "God knows where we will be on Monday when the markets re-open."

yep, they did, but they are not stupid, they are reflecting the views of their readership back to them. Tory support has all but evaporated completely across the country and there is no way out of it. They are talking about having another leadership election, but only for mp's. The problem with that is that the tory party is so fractured they couldn't get unanimously behind anyone

The tory party will be lucky to have a handful of mp's after the next election

Asda chairman Lord Stuart Rose says he does not believe Prime Minister Liz Truss can deliver stability for the economy.

Speaking on Radio 4's Today programme, he said it was nice to "hear a serious voice" in the new chancellor but said Jeremy Hunt would have to work very hard to increase business and consumer confidence.

Asked if Liz Truss was better off staying or going, for the good of the country, he said the PM was "a busted flush".

He also voiced concerns that "inflation is roaring away" and that "if we do not kill inflation we've got a problem that will last years not months."

Lord Rose added: "I can tell you people are terrified about inflation."

The chancellor is to fast track to today many billions of pounds worth of tax and spending measures from the debt plan, announcing them a fortnight earlier than expected.

It is the second time the date of further details have been brought forward, and it will be the latest in an abrupt series of U-turns on the policies announced in the mini-budget just over three weeks ago. Pulling the announcements forward from the planned 31 October date of the medium term fiscal strategy is designed to help reassure jittery markets before they open here this morning.

The announcement of the £18bn U-turn on corporation tax on Friday, and the firing of former chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng, did not calm rising UK government borrowing costs.

Yesterday, new Chancellor Jeremy Hunt told the BBC that nothing was off the table. Announcements by lunchtime and then a statement to the House of Commons will see many billions more in reversals of policy, to plug a hole in borrowing forecasts worth tens of billions.

The delay of the plan to cut the basic rate of income tax to 19p in April is widely expected. The cut to National Insurance is expected to survive, as it has already very nearly passed through Parliament. More clarity on the extent of savings in public sector spending could also be on the cards.

The Treasury has just confirmed that the measures brought forward from the debt plan “will support fiscal sustainability”.

Markets will reopen shortly in the UK without support from Bank of England emergency purchases of government borrowing. This will be a key test. Today’s moves, which could amount to a significant fiscal event in and of itself, is designed to reinject market confidence.

This surely cannot save her.
Kwarteng after all was only doing what she promised the Con members she would do.

If this is all ripped up just about now, how has Truss a shred of credibility left.

Hunt must think Christmas has come really early for him now.
He looks more competent but he's a one for really bad decisions too.
As Health secretary he was disgraceful in his treatment of the junior Doctors.
2 of my cousins were junior Doctors and went abroad because of that farce.

He was a terrible Health secretary.

However of course he needs to set out to stabilise the markets but again they shouldn't have been spooked in the first place.

Plus the damage done by them.

So how can or should this save her.

For me as a Labour supporter it would be the best thing to have her left in place.

It's what he did and stuck to and the NHS lost junior Doctors because of it and his other measures he implemented in the NHS.

Past or not, it was a massive error which he said it was when he wasn't a Minister anymore.
So there's doubts on him too from me.

He may well improve the confidence of the markets but the way he now may have to.
After this mess from Truss/Kwarteng.
Could be very hard indeed further on the citizens of the UK.

Nothing changes the now likely fact, near all she said to get elected is out the window possibly now.
Which leaves Truss looking even more untrustworthy .

IF the Cons want any chance of real credibility they need to look now at Sunak who within a month has been proved to be more right from his leadership campaign statements.

I don't hate Hunt.
I disliked intensely his part in wrecking the NHS and crushing the junior Doctors morale and hopes

If Truss does get thrown out I wouldn't bank on a new leader possibly keeping Hunt as Chancellor.

However my hope is the longer the Cons set out to FORCE the electorate to NOT have any say in this shambolic farce playing out.
Hopefully the price they'll pay for that whenever the next election is will be colossal .
Plus if things were to seem to improve a little too, that's often when voters decide it's even safer to vote for change.

[The government is scrapping almost all of the
tax measures announced in its mini-budget
three weeks ago, new Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announces
The basic rate of income tax will remain at 20p
indefinitely - instead of being reduced to 19p
But the planned cut to stamp duty and
National Insurance will go ahead
Hunt says the government will also review
the help it is providing with energy bills
The announcement - bringing forward measures
from an economic plan due on 31 October - is designed
to deliver confidence and stability, Hunt says
He will address MPs in the House of Commons at 15.30
Liz Truss has endured a weekend of open
dissent from the Tory ranks - with one former
minister saying her position is untenable

Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt has urged the
party to back Truss, saying the
UK needs stability "not a soap opera"]

They should have kept the 1p cut. Everyone would have been able to keep more of their own money that way...

sure

IF your Party holds the nation hostage by not permitting the voters a say in this atrocious shambolic farce of it in governnent.

Refusing to allow them their say until Jan 2025.

Then I hope and think too, any defeat could and should be far worse for them for that disgraceful arrogance and contempt to the UK voters.
No respect whatsoever.

the electorate cant trust Truss, she is finished. If she still remains in place at the next election, the tories will be wiped out. If they get rid of her early they stand a chance of retaining some seats. That's basically it. So whether it happens in 1 month or a year, it will have to happen for the tory party to survive

I liked Mordaunt but honestly have any of them any integrity left.
Surprised Mordaunt is deceitfully defending Truss.

Truss should be there, she isn't.
So she shouldn't be PM a moment longer than it takes to get rid of her.

Sadly to the public, Mordaunt now too will likely be seen as another likely spent force.

This is awful really.
They are humiliating themselves as well as really insulting voters and the public too.

Very disappointed with Mordaunt's display here too now.

This is also showing why parliamentary procedures need changing bigtime.

This was an oppsition question to the Prime Minister.
If the PM couldn't be there then it should have been delayed until she could be.
This farce playing out now with Mordaunt is a waste of time and frankly pointless

Whatever the GOOD reason Mordaunt says there is as to why Truss isn't there, parliament and the public deserve to know just what that good reason is.
