First Elon, now Trump talking about giving us all $5K checks. I like how we can think of doing everything but pay down the deficit... maybe wait until the aftermath—ideally good and wanted—is well established to start planning tax refunds? I don't see this as politically advantageous if they start handing out checks and then other services start having problems or falling apart..

"If you don't have taxes, the things that are paid for through taxes will no longer work".
I don't know how we could possibly have seen this coming. It's not like it's baked into the foundations of civilisation going back to Ancient Babylon or anything like that.

Why are you? I reported your posts on the daily for a week before I got bored.

That's about the level many people grieve about politics these days, so I can't blame it entirely on one poster... it just seems to be a socially acceptable way to deal with things people don't agree with.
My favorite one I was discussing with the hub is when people suddenly are like "Oh, you voted for that X person/party! It's all on you then!"... as if they now to get a free pass to check out of any accountability for their own actions and behavior towards others... just because someone else voted or thinks a different way. It's that attitude which enabled the system and society we currently have, not how people have actually voted, imo...

Agreed, DOGE is making a ridiculous mess but in fairness the vaccine-dismissals should not have been legal either, ultimately a vaccination is a medical procedure and shouldn't be compulsory for employment.
There's an element of hindsight in that though; it was well intentioned at the time, and there was a belief that vaccination would be more effective at halting spread than it was.
The DOGE stuff is not well intention nor even honest; they lie in their reasoning constantly, because they know that their supporters don't understand enough about it to spot the lies. It's shameful.
One up the bum, no harm done

Everyone knew it was nonsense from the moment the introduced things like vaccine passports. It was big government trying to control populations around the world.
Remember the New Zealand PM that made it illegal to use the bathroom in a friends house? Oh, those were the days
That was the breaking point for populations. That's when they said we have had enough of this crap

I'm not huge on conspiracy theories but I do occasionally wonder if population tolerances were being "stress tested" - i.e. what acceptance rates would be, and what drop-off rates would look like. it did seem, largely, to be ended as soon as compliance rates had clearly dropped.
You can look at it positively in that sense; as what they discovered from that test was that large-scale control is, at best, time-limited. Though I feel like that should have been obvious, there are plenty of historical examples. Maybe they were testing it out in the digital era to see if it's changed. Humans are humans though, at the end of the day.

Through SIMPLE solutions, we will be saving the American people $3.9 TRILLION over the next 10 years.🔥
By eliminating self-attestation, streamlining processes, updating technology, & more TRILLIONS will be going back into the pockets of Americans.💵
These are the savings we can deliver to the American people if Congress implements the DOGE Subcommittee’s recommendations. 👏🏻

390 billion a year, or 1.4% of US GDP.
Piss in the ocean.
WAIT, edit
Current US NATO spending is 3.4% of GDP. They want to increase NATO spending to 5% for each country. 3.4% current spend + 1.4% DOGE saving = 4.8% GDP.
Wow what a weird coincidence!!
"Money back in the pockets of Americans" :skull::skull::skull: it doesn't even totally cover the increase in military spend. Nothing at all back in pockets.

Yes because he blows hot air and isn't actually able to push through the things he wants to push through, and world leaders are becoming increasingly bored with him applying aggressive business tactics to politics.
I note you have nothing to say about the DOGE money "for American pockets" being more than swallowed up by additional military spending, Trumpette.

As I'm aware the savings made via DOGE have not been finalised nor passed through Congress, so therefore not one penny if it has been snaffled up and spent on defence.

If you'll read my above post Parmy, I pointed out that current US spending is 3.4%, DOGE savings are reportedly 1.4%, and they have indicated clearly that they want NATO members spending at 5%.
The maths there is very simple - unless they no longer intend the increase to 5% that they've already advised, then they would need the entire $390B/year (plus an additional 0.2% of GDP) just to make the 5% target. So it cannot go anywhere else.
It's not an opinion it's very simple maths.
The Trump administration have stated they want no involvement in ukraine, it's up to europe to sort out. In which case, the usa have no meaningful place in peace negotiations. They can't have their cake and eat it

Two questions there. What are your answers, heartfelt answers, to those two questions?
I don't think the world has ever been in a worse position at any point in human history. I don't think we were doing "just fine" before, but I think a truck full of fireworks and a tanker of petrol has been crashed into the bonfire that was already there, and the only real hope the civilised world now has is to cut the US loose, let it be isolationist, and watch it crash in a mere few decades like the Soviet Union, and forge stronger links in its absense.
As for a better future? Well, Europe's economy and military will leapfrog the US in less than a decade if we start cooperating on trade with the US out of the picture... So that's hopeful, I suppose?
Realistically inequality is going to continue to soar, quality of life is going to drop, and civil unrest is likely.
Hope I'm wrong and you're right about your golden Trump utopia Alf but I severely doubt it. It's already unravelling.
Remember how badly russia performed at the start of the ukraine war, with no real command structure and no-one knowing who was responsible for what with each command pointing the blame on the other. That is exactly how the USA are going to be for the forseeable future.
Is that a good thing? Who knows

This is why I'm not a fan of Federal govt getting their fingers into things financially. Not only does it raise the average tuition/cost, but all they would have to do is threaten to pull cash someplace after they've made the guarantee and now suddenly they are in the position to make conditions. This is not appropriate, imo. If they want to raid a college campus, go for it, but it won't play well with the general public. Even if I think college campuses are a place where people go to say silly things without any push back now... too much is made about not offending the students, but as long as it is peaceful, let them make their mark... (though to be fair, it's hard to tell from the comment if he means someone doing something illegal or just "illegal" students... whatever that is)

I'm not necessarily against them "raiding" if there's a ring of students hiding away in the colleges with significant criminal records, but it's more unlikely someone bothering to pursue a higher education is a detriment to society.

If Starmer had spent £18000 of a couple of months of golf weekends there would be people in the UK chewing their own lips off over it... never mind 18 million dollars :joker:
The security services were costing the country a fortune for 4 years when he wasn't president. The secret service need to protect him wherever he is, so even if he wasn't golfing, it would be the same cost. It was well known during his last term that Trump (the real human rather than the pumped-up character myth) much preferred to be out playing golf than doing, really, anything else, presidential or otherwise... and that it was a bit disproportionate to the amount of time that other previous presidents had spent on leisure pursuits. I don't know about Biden - as he was, similarly... an elderly man no doubt craving retirement and relaxation when it comes right down to it. I doubt it'll be much different this time. He's quick to delegate, certainly.

Some people wont be happy until trump drops a nuclear bomb on Moscow.. very sad times when the man seeking peace is the bad guy.
If he's seeking peace then it should be a problem for him that Russia have continued launching significant strikes when Trump has insisted that they "come to the table" but he won't say it's a problem. Why not? It's an indication that no matter how hard he tries to "campaign for peace" - if that's what you believe he's doing - Russia don't currently seem willing to pause and are using it as an opportunity to forge ahead. Not a good sign for any peace attempt.
Trump just threatened to bomb the crap out of Iran. Seeking peace?

[Alongside the warring state a vast swathe
of nations from across the globe have been
told their governments have 60 days to
address deficiencies or they will remain on the list.
A memo shows countries divided into three
separate groups - including full visa
suspensions and partial suspensions.
Many are from the Middle East and Africa,
Full Bans 11 Nations
with
Afghanistan,
Cuba,
Iran
North Korea
Bhutan
Libya

Syria
Venezuela &

most drastic measures.
In the second group, 10 countries would
face partial suspensions that would impact
tourist and student visas as well as other
immigrant visas, with some exceptions.
And in a third group, a total of 22 countries
would be considered for a partial suspension
of US visa issuance if their governments 'do
not make efforts to address deficiencies
within 60 days', the memo said.
A US official cautioned there could be
changes on the list and that it was yet
to be approved by the administration,
including U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio,
after it was reported on by
the New York Times.
For many in America, the policy will

What's right in front of your face is that Russia started the war to gain land and keep NATO off its border, and is offering to end the war if they get to keep the land they've gained and get a guarantee of no NATO for Ukraine.
It's not complicated. It's a war for land and resources like every other war in history. That's right in front of your face.
But oh no no if you don't believe that it's a shadowy conspiracy of global elites then you're just brainwashed by the MSM. Laughable. The irony of course being that there's not one original thought behind any of this for the people saying it, it's just stuff they've read other people bleating about.

The body of Jessica D. Aber, 43, was discovered at an Alexandria, Virginia, residence on Saturday. Authorities did not release details about her death, but a family friend told Fox News on Sunday that the decedent suffered from a chronic medical condition.
"Police believe the death was the result of a longstanding medical issue," the source said.
I would love to know how many people who work in Washington have some kind of chronic issue. I'm willing to bet the numbers are very high...
White House inadvertently texted top-secret Yemen war plans to journalist
Senior members of Donald Trump’s cabinet have been involved in a serious security breach while discussing secret military plans for recent US attacks on the Houthi armed group in Yemen.
In an extraordinary blunder, key figures in the Trump administration – including the vice-president, JD Vance, the defence secretary Pete Hegseth, the secretary of state, Marco Rubio, and the director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard – used the commercial chat app Signal to convene and discuss plans – while also including a prominent journalist in the group.
The news was met with outrage and calls for an investigation in the US, with Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer calling it “one of the most stunning breaches of military intelligence I have read about in a very, very long time”
Signal is not approved by the US government for sharing sensitive information.
Related: Outrage after White House accidentally texts journalist war plans: ‘Huge screw-up’
Others in the chat included the Trump adviser Stephen Miller; Trump’s chief of staff, Susie Wiles; and the key Trump envoy Steve Witkoff.
The breach was revealed in an article published on Monday by Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor of the Atlantic magazine, who discovered that he had been included in a Signal chat called “Houthi PC Small Group” and realising that 18 other members of the group included Trump cabinet members.
In his account, Goldberg said that he removed sensitive material from his account, including the identity of a senior CIA officer and current operational details.
The report was confirmed by Brian Hughes, a spokesperson for the national security council, who told the magazine: “This appears to be an authentic message chain, and we are reviewing how an inadvertent number was added to the chain.”
Hughes added: “The thread is a demonstration of the deep and thoughtful policy coordination between senior officials. The ongoing success of the Houthi operation demonstrates that there were no threats to troops or national security.”

They want us to believe that they're incompetent but it's engneered incompetence with very specific purposes. It's the entire Trump playbook. Play dumb. You can see it filtering down though his leuitenants and all the way to his followers too (with mixed effect, some people are better at it than others).

Maybe in part, I think the clues on motivation lie more in the content of the leak than the simple fact that a leak occurred; there was built-in plausible deniability for the main players ("Trump knew nothing about any of this" for example) and "interestingly" plenty of rhetoric in "leaked" material dogwhistling about the strength of the US and apparent-weakness of Europe.
What I think is "worrying" (though not really in the sense that it's entirely unsurprising at this point) is that because I don't believe for a second that the use of unsecured channels was due to incompetence or negligence, and the risk/likelihood of foreign powers (China/Russia) also being able to intercept these communications regardless of "press leaking"... one has to assume that said foreign powers were already (knowingly) aware of any information or plans contained in those messages.
Basically I see an awful low of smoke and mirrors/play acting for public consumption, and that seems more and more obvious across politics these days. Perhaps it was always the way, of course. It's just becoming blatant to the extent that I think the public/support bases themselves actively play along. Really bizarre times.

Agreed, the Trump support base will either believe the denial, or believe that it was justified and pretend to believe the denial. There's no realistic possibility of any accountability so it doesn't really matter what happened, they'll write their own story and that will be the official story by default.

I think it probably has always been this way, I think the truly fascinating thing that's emerged recently for me is that ... in the past it was assumed that it was this way, and propaganda was a problem because it was successfully "hoodwinking" people. In the Internet era where everyone is much more aware, what seems pretty clear to me is that ... that's not the case at all -- and maybe it never was. While it does happen, I don't think people being "tricked" by propaganda and the oratory and gameplaying is the whole story - I think people are fully aware of what they're seeing, and actively choosing to play along and copy/paste/further the rhetoric because it aligns with what they already on a personal level wanted to happen. Everyone gaslighting each other on a massive scale.
"Can't you see the problem wi..."
"NO I CAN'T"
"But you must concede that"
"NO, WRONG!!!"
Or rather, tl;dr I think most Trump supporters (and supporters of whoever) know that their favourite politicians are perched on thrones of lies, but they like the effect he has on "their enemy" so they #1 do not care and #2 actively play into it.
In the information era it's all just so open and blatant.

In our relatively recent history, we had 2 world wars where the radio was used to spread disinformation. After the war we had Russia and China making up all sorts of disinformation and the west responded (to a degree) in kind. One of the famous ones was Regans star wars program which was 100% fiction
So what I am basically saying, disinformation has always been with us, and the side that usually wins that argument, is the side that won the war/battle etc etc

…I think also that there’s an element of ….when the public don’t like what they’re seeing …if it jars in any way with their beliefs etc…then it can just be dismissed as ‘fake news’ so events and facts and false information or ‘adjusted I formation’ is all just made to fit by the person receiving it…the key is divisiveness, isn’t it…because divided always weakened so that power could be gained and that’s the principal and foundation of things like ‘cult mindsets as well’….divide those minds from information/from reality and then you have power over them…I mean, that’s an extreme thing but it’s a similar principal…

I agree it's always been with us, as above though I just think what's clearer than ever, to put it much more simply, is that for the mostpart people will believe what they want to believe, and brand what they don't want to believe to be false. It has very little to do with objective reality and everything to do with sociology and "feelings".
It gets more complicated when you factor in global communications of course - the "spread" is no longer local, not to the same extent anyway, hence why we have so many in the UK so firmly immersed in US-centric propaganda (and why it spreads so easily to other nations).
As an aside thought; it seems clear to me that if the 1930's Nazi's had been broadcasting freely on British radiowaves in English we'd have been in big fkn trouble.

…disinformation has always been there, I agree…but the world has changed and it’s much more divisive and ‘tribal’…I think that disinformation may have always been there but it’s never been so ‘weaponised’ as it is in current times…and also not so much on fast speed, either…click, click, click etc…which is so much quicker than your carrier pigeon days, bots…:fan:…
i think the difference between now and 70 years ago is that while communication was pretty quick over the radio, the feedback loop was slow and therefore inertia took a while to build. Now feedback is near instant and that creates inertia that feeds echo chambers which puts the whole thing on an entirely new level. All Trump had to do recently was speak a couple of sentences and the world went in to hyperdrive. That just wouldn't have happened previously, even 20 years ago.

Yes and the quick feedback loop also lets them adjust and tweak the message extremely quickly and measure the effects, to adjust and tweak again, in the space of hours when it once would have taken days, and not all that long before that, weeks/months. It's only going to get more pronounced as AI continues to improve; I don't think the robots are going to take over the world, but what they can do is gather and analyse data for people at almost-instant speeds ... this has never been possible before in all of history. You could literally take in depth, detailed, written-out feedback from millions of people, have AI process it and have a 2000 word summary of "people's general thoughts" within minutes. No polls needed, no trying to frame the question, no one having to put together the data and analyse it... you can just say "Read through all of these documents and tell me in general what people think about _______" and you have that info immediately. We're at the tip of an absolutely massive iceberg.
to make things even more complicated (and what we've seen repeatedly recently) is the clear realisation that markets also react at lightning speed. A few sentences here and there from someone with huge influence can have global markets all over the place.

[Trump announces 25% tariffs on car imports to the USA]
[US President Donald Trump has announced
new import taxes of 25% on cars and car parts
coming into the US in a move that threatens
to widen the global trade war.
Trump said the latest tariffs would come
into effect on 2 April, with charges on
businesses importing vehicles starting
the next day.
Charges on parts are set to start
in May or later.
The president claimed the measure would
lead to "tremendous growth" for
the car industry,
promising it would spur jobs and
investment in the US.
But analysts have said the move
is likely to lead to the temporary
shutdown of significant car production
in the US, increase prices, and strain
relations with allies.
The US imported roughly eight million cars
last year, accounting for about $240bn (£186bn)
in trade and roughly half of overall sales.]

Professional culture has really declined in the US, so it's easier for me to believe it is incompetence... like people don't care that they're being lazy or "not abiding by the rules"... we take so much of the structure and ideals we've been gifted for granted now.
Edit: There's also an increasing attitude of dragging the top of one's field down to the lower levels of the "masses". I see it in my own field. The "incompetent" folk are the ones able to adjust quicker to changing norms and so they're forcing the market to play to their rules now... the "true" professional is squeezed out and replaced by AI and templates.
I don't necessarily see it as a bad thing. (Exempt from this thought are security breaches :spin:) It's good old systems are being broken down, because there were too many arbitrary standards that have no place in modern work. And now, there's also the increasing piece of the pie who are seeing the value in "professional" standards, especially on those working the field. They realize time is money and why certain standards have appeared and remain so resistant... some things need weeding out... but yeah, Americans hate elitism atm and are currently directly at war with that class of thought.
…we knew this is what he would aim for, didn’t we…
Trump says he is not joking about third presidential term…
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Republican President Donald Trump said on Sunday he was not joking about seeking a third presidential term, which is barred by the U.S. Constitution, but that it was too early to think about doing so.
Trump, who took office on January 20 for his second, non-consecutive White House term, has made allusions to seeking a third one but addressed it directly in a telephone interview with NBC News.
"No, I'm not joking. I’m not joking," Trump said, but "it is far too early to think about it."
"There are methods which you could do it, as you know," he said, declining to elaborate on specific methods.
U.S. presidents are limited to two four-year terms, consecutive or not, according to the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
A proposal to overturn a constitutional amendment requires a two-thirds vote in both houses of Congress and ratification by the legislatures of three-fourths of the 50 U.S. states.
Some Trump allies have floated the idea of keeping Trump in the White House beyond 2028, and the president has also brought up the idea on a number of occasions in a manner that seemed to poke at his political opponents.
Trump, who at 78 was the oldest U.S. president at the time of his inauguration, would be 82 if he took on another four-year term following the November 2028 election.
George Washington in 1796 set the precedent for a two-term presidency, a self-imposed limit that was observed by most U.S. presidents for more than 140 years until Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1940.
Roosevelt, a Democrat who was president during the Great Depression and World War 2, broke tradition and served a third term, then died months into his fourth term in 1945. This paved the way for the amendment on term limits in 1951.
Longtime Trump adviser Steve Bannon said in a March 19 interview with NewsNation that he believes Trump will run again in 2028. Bannon said he and others are looking into ways to make that happen, including examining the definition of a term limit.
"We're working on it," Bannon said.

The man really believes he's immortal I guess. If he does somehow start a 3rd term my bet is that he won't finish it; the human body goes downhill RAPIDLY at 80+.

The tinfoil in me suspects that it already is, whether it's direct manipulation of the process (perhaps more tinfoil) or simply social manipulation, the fact that entire news platforms and social media trends are now dictated by private individuals and $$$$$$ means that any democratic concept is quite meaningless.
i think it's already gone too and the really disappointing thing is there is zero effective opposition to it from within the USA. The reality of the US is just that it's not that progressive at its core; certainly not yet, maybe not ever, it could go either way as age demographics shift but I don't think it's ever going to be "massively" non-conservative... thus, the only effective opposition to all of this trash, is a more reasonable, professional, at least half-decent group that tends more the the "right hand side" of the Dems and the at-least-grownups side of the Republicans. I agree with that, if anything I think Vance is "playing along" with the current Trump/Musk political environment with his own slightly different (but ultimately not better) embitions in mind. I think he's 100% in it genuinely for the politics unlike Trump and especially Musk who have other motivations (primarily economic) but I don't for a second imagine they're "good" politics.
But yeah... if he gets into a position of real power he'll not give it back. He'd turn on Trump on the head of a pin.

More importantly though it's increasingly clear that Trump isn't the driving force behind anything that's happening; his "cult of personality" is a tool that they're using, and maybe a very important one, but he's not running the show... so if they can find a popular replacement and win with them, the "can he have a 3rd term" question becomes moot. It'll be a 3rd term of someone "Trump-like".

Could be in line for a very young president then - Barron is the only one with the popularity to win (legitimately, Elon and his bot-farms might tweak it of course). I hear people talking about Ivanka but I just don't see it... the red hat MAGA core and Musk-aligned incel crowd will go with almost anything, but they're not going to vote for a woman as their president.

Of course it'd be fair to say, that wouldn't even be in any way odd for the US, their politics has always been full of family dynasties.
A proposal to overturn a constitutional amendment requires a two-thirds vote in both houses of Congress and ratification by the legislatures of three-fourths of the 50 U.S. states.
I don't think that has been suggested but it'd be really funny if they tried. We are not politically setup to be anyway near an Constitutional Amendment era.
They should try actually, if they are that insistent. For one, people should see why we have guardrails in the first place. When they don't their way, maybe tearing down the system isn't always the first solution that should be provided.
As arista said, I can see him considering himself as a running mate lol. But seriously, can his ego handle his successor taking his credit? Vance genuinely has charisma and doesn't necessarily need anyone as a running mate, imo.

It should, in theory, be much harder to make actual constitutional changes but will really be the ultimate test of the US constitution, which has long been held up as almost gospel... ... ... especially by Republicans.
And if it fails that test then the entire constitution might as well be torn up and thrown in the nearest bin, not one word of it will be worth a single cent. Certainly interesting times, scary as they are... a huge part of what's allowing things to go as they are is that the opposing side has one hand tied behind their back playing by the established letter of law and government in the US... if it all goes out the window all bets are off .
any opposition to a 3rd trump term will end up in the supreme court and we all know how that will go
SCOTUS is meant to read the Constitution and "only" go by what is written. They're not supposed to find loopholes or make up new interpretations to fit any intention just because "they can see it both ways" or insert moral view.
I have no love for either party. I think both have the appetite to alter the system to grab power in a big way. And there's certainly some interest by different members of SCOTUS in doing things out of the norm. It's a matter of who wants to step up to hit the activation button on the dangerous scary puzzle and see how the American public reacts. Our politics is so full of inflated egos in so many ways, it's only a matter of time.
Anyway, it seems we are not getting term limits for Congressional members. I think of all guard rails, we need that more to make room a political system that adapts faster to changing cultural norms... modern thinking and technology requires that now.

One way is to Let
JD Vance run
With Trump as his number 2.
Then once (if) in Power
JD stands down
Trump would then take over
He can’t. The law is clear that in order to be eligible to be VP, the VP must be eligible to step in as president. Trump is illegible because he can’t have a third term. This has already been settled but Don the Con is determined to turn everything into a circus. The man has had 6 bankruptcies and is determined to make the US his 7th.
there are all sorts of reasons for trump planting this seed. He wants to be the most powerful and richest man in the world, so he doesn't want to give up his position of power. The other side is that he very quickly becomes a lame duck president unless he floats the possibility of another term.
He is old, who knows if it will become an issue or not, but if he is still alive, i'm sure he will remain president, one way or another

Markets have absolutely tanked, lol. There's very little argument to support the idea that they have any idea what they're doing at this point. Literally no one benefits from this. I do enjoy that British Gammonry will be shooting and celebrating in complete ignorance to the fact that their pension pots are plummeting to the floor :joker:.
[edit] That said I suppose most probably won't be in private pots, just waiting to scrub around on their state pension blaming immigrants for it not being enough to live on.

This isn't a revolt but I am enjoying that the press are confused and reporting it as such. Musk (and Trump) are essentially using the tariffs not because they want to tariff... but because they want to force free trade (0%) both-ways with he countries they'd like to trade with (1st world, basically) and think that by increasing their tariffs on others to silly numbers, they can force those countries to say "OK remove the tariffs and we'll also lower to 0% on US imports".
But thus far it's not working that way... it's becoming a messy trade war... and there's every chance that the other countries involved will cluster up and leave the US out in the cold. They think that can't happen because of the value of the US economy and the USD being the currency of choice -- but it doesn't have to be, and if they think the US economy can't decline to 2nd or even 3rd place (behind China and EU+UK), they are simply wrong. I say "wrong"... they're not daft, they know fine well it can. What they're doing is bluffing/gambling at everyone else's expense.
The interesting thing is that if america loses it's position as the key world currency, it won't have the same demand for its currency. This has a huge knock on effect because if countries dont invest in the USD, then america will no longer be able to run its economy with a budget deficit. That will mean they have to pay back trillions
I can easily see a new world order coming along that just excludes America. Lets see how they like that

The tinfoil hat in me might of course suggest that, if that was to happen, it was the intent of Trump/Musk and co all along. It feels too intentional.
Of course the whole thing could still be one massive bull rush scam, tanking the economy, investing heavily via proxies and then making changes/announcements designed to trigger a massive rebound. For anyone who knew such was coming... they could easily double (or more) their wealth. Yet another massive transfer of global funds upwards.
