I have a friend at Standard Life, he'll only talk about it in very vague terms but I suppose they probably have rules around that sort of thing. He did say, "Well. The money's always somewhere". Cryptic...

Gone up since when, though? Year-on-year lots of things are still up (way up) but in the last month the boards are all red, it's dire. Ultimately for pensions it might matter or it might not - if you still have 10+ years until retirement all that matters is annual %age gain... if you're one or two years off retirement, a 10%+ market crash could cost tens of thousands or even into 6-figures depending on the size of the pension.

As it happens I have lost the log-ins for both my work pensions so I think I'll just let them stay lost for a few years, I'd rather not know :joker:. My separate investments are in the absolute gutter though, Donlon Trusk and their tariffs have cost me about £2k in the last 5 weeks :umm2:.

It's all just "theoretical money" to be fair, I wasn't going to cash any of it in any time soon, so it can always rebound and as above all that matters is the longer term but ... still grim to look at on a screen.

I feel most for people with 401Ks and such, but I've never felt 401Ks to be as secure as other retirement options. We were eventually going to get this kind of American wild west-style government where someone comes in and takes a hit with the sledgehammer to the system (which was begging for it). It was very inevitable with our cultural sentiments. With our economy being top-heavy, we're already used to rich folk being fickle with their money. I prefer they be fickle with the markets rather than it turning into mass layoffs and people losing work en masse. So there's that. It will delay/impact many people's retirement, absolutely, because 401K is the common option which is the unfortunate part. SSA payments going up this month will at least help offset it some.

I don't know if it works different there, but when I worked with a company that offered 401K, I could change ratio and selection of stocks in the 401K every so often. I always picked safe bets but with lesser gains and so that impacts whether some things even touch the acct or not during market volatility. If people are picking high value, but more sensitive stocks and putting all their eggs in those options, then I can see that being disastrous...

Most pension providers provide a range of investment options, Bonds being the main one, Gold, the stock market so it is unlikely pensions would be affected massively unless you are very close to retirement then it could pose an issue

company pension schemes tend to invest in very stable instruments. Also, they never invest the entire amount of a pension, it's always a proportion. That all goes out the window if you are managing it yourself, of course :laugh:

Crypto is in a weird spot atm, Crypto casinos (which aren't exactly new) are starting to make huge waves in the bonkers crypto market, and helping govern fluctuation. They're aggressively recruiting the young and encouraging them to gamble as if it's "challenge" and "cool" like in actual video gaming (bit like the crates and packs gambling wrapped up as something else, but 100% gambling aimed solely at kids to get them hooked early).

They are so incredibly shady too, sponsoring streamers who constantly lose, smash things up, and go into total meltdown after losing, then feinning for another "reload" (more money to gamble with), which these "sponsors" happily provide!

I've only really been into crypto for the past 2 years, at best, such a volatile market, but a much safer gamble than sports betting (which i used to do on a daily basis).

I have taken some out tbh, because you're right, Trump is fcking everything up, and is only interested in lining the pockets of his cronies. And yeah, crypto is a "bros" type thing, if that makes sense. A lot of tech savvy bros in their early 20's are a huge demo of the market too (not all Trump supporters mind, im in a few crypto discord servers, and loads of these "bros" are massively against Trump).

The crypto market mirrors the stock market for the most part, and the fact an iphone (with current tariffs in place) could cost $3000 in the US now, or that a new car could potentially add another $10000 to the sale price through these tariffs is very scary indeed.

This channel is getting a lot of traction, but I've never heard of it. Anyway, they've been posting reports out of China related to the trade war... and yeah, it's as devastating as one would expect on many businesses that largely deal in foreign trade. If this continues, Amazon is going to have to be more locally-sourced, so that should be interesting... honestly with the amount of shops filled with cheap plastic goods, it's nauseating to go into shops at times, just from a green perspective. I hate how much waste is created just for all throw away goods that collects in a landfill. Not even that it's cheaply made, but that it's such an afterthought and not worth the time and materials to produce!... seeing quality goods come back even at a higher cost that force people to conserve their spending and not hoarding lots of plastic would be so welcome. The US has so much product like that and I do not like waste.

But then so much good product and ideas come out of China also especially in recent years, so I'd like to see that trend continue. I don't always connect Chinese things with "cheap", anymore. I think it's improved overall.

I hope for a good outcome for both sides, but agree, that things can't continue as they are. US life often just feels like an afterthought due to the ridiculous focus on consumer-ing, and I think it's reflected in the poor way things are being done... from schooling, to how even homes are being built (leaky fiberboard...)... it's like we have accepted our destiny is for the landfill. From what I understood, he was fundraising off their backs to try to essentially use his influence to purchase power to remake the party to his preferred choices and that was a no no. It's an interesting find this new "out" though they've found about whether the process wasn't run correctly, because they were pretty adamant the first time about sticking to rules when running through the process so as to ensure a diverse result.. so it's kind of odd they missed anything procedural at all in the selection. That's why the Depp trial was so long. Heard needed to provide hard evidence to her claims and if they couldn't do that outright, then the only option was to put their whole marriage on trial to try to establish something that could limit the payout. It didn't make him look great, but it obliterated her image and her career overnight. Defamation is very difficult and expensive to fight and everyone's dirty laundry will be put out on display in the process, so corporations usually just settle...

I don't think this really applies to South Park, though... the show is clearly satirical in nature and Trump just said SP is now irrelevant. :laugh:

So in filing for defamation, there's a long path that leads up where specific criteria have to be met which can be like a mini trial in itself that puts most of the burden on the plaintiff (that's why it's expensive)...he'd have to provide evidence the show is relevant enough to even cause the damage needed for a suit... he would have to prove the depictions were presented as fact rather than opinion... and then there's the intended malice requirement, meaning, they put out the information with the intent to cause reputational harm... South Park would have no trouble defending any claim because 1) it's literally a cartoon.. and 2) they could easily provide testimony from other public figures as well using social media posts as evidence to show that it's no different than everyday banter amongst the normals and that SP isn't doing anything particularly egregious... it would never make it past pretrial.

The only effect it might have is if they can try to tie the content of SP to Paramount and make it an extension of that suit. But it would be very hard to claim they cherry picked what went into their episodes when SP has always typically gone after public figures in a hard way...
