The slave trade was a larger part of American history, and played a central role in their civil war. While some Brits did have slaves, it wasn't as much of "a thing" in Britain and wasn't tied into our history, i.e. in the same way it was involved in their war. You can't teach about the American Civil War without bringing slavery into it.
But it wasn't an integral part of our history, unless we're counting when virtually everyone in the British Isles were the slaves of the Romans
