Default Do you walk 10,000 steps?

And if you do what have been the results? Did you shed pounds? Did you have to watch your diet to see results or could you have pizza and 2 McDonald's meal, walk 10,000 and still see results?

To lose weight just walking you have to put yourself in a calorie deficit. So you have to burn more calories than you consume. Walking 10000 steps burns around 500 calories ish. You burn around 1500 calories just by living so if you stick to around 1500 calories from food you would lose weight from just walking.....very slowly but you would.

Tldr: no you can't eat pizza dn McDonald's and lose weight just by making sure you get 10000 steps in

…I do more than, I would guess…but I stopped counting steps quite a while ago, it becomes obsessive……Mr Ammi still has his app going to count them though and on extra long walks he’ll sometimes say how many steps we’ve done…

Not everyday no. And no doing 10k steps isn't going to make you lose weight so you can eat whatever. Your diet really is the biggest factor in helping you lose weight

Yes because of Miss Tilly, but yes calorie deficit and exercise is the only way to lose weight as Annie says

Not every day but I probably average over 10,000 across the week

While getting your steps in helps walking is like the least efficient form of exercise for burning calories. I think people are better off taking up running or cycling than just focusing on their walking

I prefer a hike to a run, I tried running for a bit but I absolutely hated it, not great for the joints either

I think you'd love it if you already like walking and think it clears your mind. It's a good way to explore as well, finding new spots to visit once a week or so

…pavement/hard surface running isn’t great for the knees/legs at all …walking at speed is ok and gets to burning celeries…Nordic Walking is meant to be excellent but it’s not something that’s really appealed to me, personally…I might look at it at some point though…

Honestly, I love it. If you’re going to start, start with a gentle hike and ease yourself into the more difficult/longer ones. Make sure to pack all the things you’ll need too; enough water, food, mini first aid kit, lightweight water proofs etc.

Not currently. But I was briefly unemployed in the early part of last year and was doing at least 20k steps a day and averaging around 25k. That's around 4 hours a day. Some of the most peaceful and enjoyable time I've ever spent on this Earth. I kind of want to get back into the habit, but coupled with the work I now have later in the day, so much as even thinking about a walk leaves me feeling exhausted.

…I’m glad that you got and felt something really positive and enhancing from what would have been a time of darker tones as well with your job situation…that’s really heart warming to hear……I can understand how your working hours don’t allow for much of a balance atm…maybe you could think about walking again in your non working days, though…and in holiday time…it wouldn’t become a routine but it might recapture some of that peacefulness and enjoyment that you felt…

Thank you Ammi. Yeah I didn't want to mention it, but in retrospect I think the walks may have been an ever so slightly unhealthy way of coping with the loss I'd then recently suffered. 25k is just a tad excessive, looking back. Still, as far as coping mechanisms go, it's preferable to the drink and drugs.

…I’m not sure if it’s unhealthy, it’s just how we all cope with grief in different ways…I was similar when my dad died in that I became gym obsessed and would try to go three times a day and would begin to panic if I wasn’t able to go…releasing endorphins is also linked to to releasing emotions, isn’t it…?…and it’s also a time when we feel a huge loss of life control, which pushing our bodies physical can help to put back into place, you know…and you experienced a great sense of calm from your walking …you may not be able to explore that right now with work commitments but it’s something you’re still holding and might enjoy again at some point when it feels right and you’re able to…
