I don't believe in a Christian God, but there is yet to be a Scientific truth that contradicts the possibility of something existing beyond our understanding. Your first point is not strictly correct and is simply a reflection on the make-up of society at that time than saying that great minds were also Christian - as they were not and continue not to be.
taking a anti-christian stance at that time would have meant the end of their research and livelihood - they were not daft, just scientists.
