Aston Villa have signed defender Habib Beye from Newcastle United on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

The Senegal international right-back, 31, follows Stewart Downing and Fabian Delph to Villa Park as boss Martin O'Neill's third major summer signing.

He was Newcastle's player of the year in 2008, and reached the Uefa Cup final with Marseille in 2004.

Beye had also been given permission to speak to Hull City before opting to join Villa.

Nobody wants to work for a manager who makes up stories about a player spitting on another person. :pat:

If they lose Michael Turner as well then they are well and truly ****ed. If it wasn't for their great start to the season last year they would have easily gone down -- can't see them surviving another season tbh.

I never realised Eduardos goal scoring record....

Dinamo Zagreb 111 games 83 goals. 1 Goal every 0.74 games.
Inter Zaprešić (loan) 15 games 10 goals. 1 Goal every 0.66 games

National.
Croatia 24 matches 14 goals. Goal every 0.58 games.

So everyone he has played for bar Arsenal he has scored better than every other game.

38 games... 19 goals :cheer: He shall do it!

Everton have turned down a transfer request from Joleon Lescott, who is being targeted by Manchester City.

The Goodison Park outfit have knocked back bids of £15m and £18m from City for the centre-half.

"I have always said that we are not selling any players and that has not changed," Toffees boss David Moyes told the club's website.

Lescott, 26, is currently on international duty with England ahead of a friendly against the Netherlands.

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has pulled out of the England squad for Wednesday's friendly against the Netherlands because of a groin injury.

Gerrard's withdrawal follows that of Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster on Monday.

"Steven Gerrard will not travel to Amsterdam this morning for England's friendly with Holland on Wednesday," a Football Association statement read.

"Gerrard has returned to Liverpool as a precaution due to a tight groin."

No replacement for Gerrard has been named.

Foster, 26, picked up a knock during his side's FA Community Shield defeat by Chelsea on Sunday.

Manchester City's Joe Hart - currently on loan at Birmingham City - has been called up as a replacement.

John Carew is shocked that Norway are just 90 minutes away from World Cup elimination but has not yet given up all hope of qualification.

The Norwegians are struggling at the bottom of Group Nine before Wednesday's qualifier against Scotland in Oslo.

"Our position is a bit surprising," said the Aston Villa striker.

"But we still have a theoretical chance to qualify. We have to try to get the result, although it is always tough against Scotland."

Victory for George Burley's side, who sit second in the group and in pole position for a play-off place, at the Ullevaal Stadium would signal the end for Egil Olsen's hosts.

But Carew insists that, while there is still hope under their interim manager, Norway will continue to battle.

"I didn't expect us to be in this position, but that is the reality," said the striker.

Cardiff City's Joe Ledley will captain Wales in their friendly match against Montenegro.

Manager John Toshack has called on the Cardiff midfielder to lead his team out after Craig Bellamy withdrew due to an ongoing knee injury.

Ledley, 22, has captained his country twice before in the 1-0 wins over Estonia and Azerbaijan.

"Joe has done the job in the last two matches and we've had a couple of decent results," said Toshack.

"We will leave it at that for the time being."

Ledley was cleared to play after recovering from an illness which forced him off during Cardiff's 4-0 win over Scunthorpe on Saturday.

Bellamy was ruled out by his club Manchester City but a communication breakdown by the Blues left the Wales management questioning why he had failed to turn up at Cardiff Airport for Monday morning's flight to Podgorica.

City later said in a statement: "Craig's situation should have been communicated to the Football Association of Wales over the weekend.

"But a misunderstanding on the process meant this was regrettably not done until today."

The statement added: "Craig Bellamy is continuing his fitness and rehabilitation work following a knee injury.

"He suffered a reaction following Saturday's game against Celtic and is therefore unavailable to represent Wales in this week's friendly against Montenegro."

Barcelona have been given the green light to make an approach to Arsenal for Cesc Fabregas, according to a report.

The Blaugrana have set their sights on re-signing the midfielder who left them to join the Gunners six years ago, and believe that they have just a week to put a deal in place.

Arsenal take on Celtic in the Champions League qualifiers on August 18, and the Catalan giants want to tempt manager Arsene Wenger into selling before then to stop Fabregas from playing and therefore becoming cup-tied.

If he does appear in the first leg of the European encounter, Barca will be forced to forget about signing him, so an offer is due to be made this week, El Mundo Deportivo believe.

A phone call to the representatives of the playmaker saw Barcelona encouraged to make a move. They were supposedly told that Cesc would like the idea of returning to the Blaugrana if Arsenal could be persuaded.

But Wenger is unlikely to willingly let another key player go after a summer that has already seen him lose Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure.

A fee of €40 million or €50m will be required to give Barcelona a chance of signing the playmaker, especially as Wenger is not interested in the likes of Eidur Gudjohnsen in part exchange.

Manchester City Offer Barcelona Star Lionel Messi Blank Cheque - Report
The Argentine wizard has received a highly lucrative deal from the Citizens...

According to Marca, cash-rich Manchester City have not given up on signing Lionel Messi and are interested in capturing him at all costs.

The Argentina international is currently in talks with Barcelona over a new contract and City have used that situation to renew their interest in the gifted footballer.

It is believed the Premier League club have approached Messi's agent to let the player know of their interest, having handed the 22-year-old a blank cheque, in effect asking him to name his price.

This is not the first time that City have expressed an interest in Messi. In the winter transfer window, they were ready to pay his release clause, set at €150 million, and offer him €12 million per season after tax.

Messi rejected the approach and it is understood City's new attempt will receive a similarly short shrift as he is happy at the Camp Nou and wants to stay in a team that can challenge on all fronts.

Nicklas Bendtner Offers Arsenal Fans Personal Shirt Refund
The Gunners' striker is willing to dig deep to compensate the fans...

Danish international Nicklas Bendtner is offering to personally refund fans after switching squad numbers this season.

The Arsenal striker has offered to dig deep into his own pockets to compensate fans who have purchased replica shirts with his name and former number, 26, printed on the back.

The 21-year-old will wear the number 52 on his back this season and he explained why on Arsenal's official website.

"Before it starts I wanted to change my squad number from 26 which I’ve obviously had for a number of seasons now," revealed Bendtner.

"I chose to move to 52 because it’s a special number to me personally, and I hope that it brings me good luck for the new season.

"I appreciate that a good number of fans have bought their kits for 2009/10 already with names and numbers printed up so I’d like to personally cover the cost of replacing anyone’s shirt that has my previous number.

"It means a lot to see supporters wearing your name and number, and I want to ensure people aren’t inconvenienced by the change."

The generosity of the striker mirrors that of former Aston Villa defender Olof Mellberg. The Swedish defender gave a shirt to each of Villa's travelling supporters when he played his last game for the club against West Ham United in 2008.

The 3,200 shirts, a combination of home and away, were printed 'Mellberg 4 - Thanks For Your Support'.

Hleb, again, laments move away from Arsenal

Former Arsenal winger Alexander Hleb has once again been grieving to the media about how much he regrets leaving Arsenal for Spanish giants Barcelona. Hleb was not successful in cementing a regular starting spot in the Spanish side, and in hindsight, it has to be said that we're not exactly missing our Belarus international, are we?

Yes, he provided options and his ball retention was one of the best in the world, but he was frustrating in the sense that he would never take the opportunity to shoot, and in Samir Nasri [his replacement] we have a player who is almost as good in retaining possession but also willing to take a shot at goal from distance.

So, whilst we're not missing Hleb as much as he's missing us, it's nice to hear another former Arsenal player reinforce the belief that no one actually gets better when they leave the club, or at least develop to become better players.

Hleb said: "Of course I regret leaving Arsenal. I was playing every week for one of the most exciting sides in Europe, a team which was always in the top-four in the Premier League and were Champions League contenders.

"Also, I was being guided by one of the best coaches in the world in Arsène Wenger. I owe him a great deal. I developed a better all-round game under him and I became more robust physically, learnt to look up more and play better passes and generally improved greatly as a team player. No player ever gets worse under Wenger.

"Obviously, I still look out for Arsenal each week and I hope they can do well this time. I think they will be in the top-four again and could even push for the title if they don't have the terrible injuries of last season. People forget the long unbeaten run they had after Christmas last season, which was a good sign for this season.

"For me, leaving Arsenal was not a good move. A footballer only exists when he takes to the field and makes a proper contribution to the team and even though I was part of a Barca squad that was almost unstoppable, it was hard not to feel detached from all the happiness and celebration at the end.

"Barca were my dream club as a kid, but I couldn't continue with them if the chance to play was not coming. I'm 28 and who knows how much time I've left in the game. I needed to move on and the chance to go back to a place that I feel happy in was the best solution."

Hleb is now back with his former club Vfb Stuttgart on a season-long loan, turning down the opportunity to move to Inter Milan as part of the deal to bring Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Spain.

- Arsenal have pulled out in the race to sign Chamakh and let westham and fulham fight it out for his signature, i believe this is just more of Wengers tactics.. since he knows how keen Chamakh is to move to Arsenal.. He done it with Arshavin when they wern't willing to sell, yet we got him in the end, i think we will do the same here.

- Neven Subotic: Arsenal Switch to £12M Bundesliga Star Serb Instead of Hangeland, Arsenal have reportedly switched their attention away from Fulham’s £15m rated Brede Hangeland towards Serbian 6 ft 4 centre-half Neven Subotic despite the player recently signing a new long-term contract with his club Borussia Dortmund, The 20-year-old has enjoyed a fantastic debut season with Borussia after moving from Mainz.

BANGOR City travelled to Merseyside on Saturday expecting to take on an Everton Academy team – but they ended up facing millions of pounds worth of talent.

Nigerian international Yakubu, who is on the comeback trail after injury, featured for the Blues outfit in the first half of a friendly encounter at the club’s plush Finch Farm training complex.

Managed by Alan Stubbs, the Everton side won 6-0 but the scoreline was unimportant to a Bangor side which gained plenty from the experience of competing with Premier League players.

Also in the Blues side with first-team experience were goalkeeper Iain Turner, Lukas Jutkiewicz, Kieran Agard, Jose Baxter and James Wallace.

"It was a great workout," said Bangor City matchday secretary Gwynfor Jones.

"It’s unlikely James Brewerton and Dave Morley will ever come up against a striker like Yakubu again – he scored a goal in the first half which you’d never see in the Welsh Premier.

It's not a full strength England team but we should do ok..
Plus it's not a World Cup game, game is a waste of time with the new season starting this Saturday.

Sir Bobby :'-(
Italia 90, fantastic World Cup.
