I had a think about the survey last night, maybe we should make a few alterations? Anyone have any suggestions?

Mitchell

8 people responded to that survey, a lot of people like Malta, but a lot of people also want a family holiday...

Kate!

Btw this is a two day task, so when I said it ended on Friday it doesn't, it ends on Thursday :pipe:

Loukas
26-03-2014, 01:08 PM
what i think would be best for this task would be to find something to please everyone in our target market not just stick with just families, backpackers or 18-30's, we think of them as one group of people that we can please. I was thinking something along the lines of team building, bungee jumping, zip wires ect in a forest/jungle type area but somewhere thats like a 10 minute walk from a beach too? Maybe Australia?

Mitchell
26-03-2014, 01:09 PM
Australia is one of the most popular tourist destinations though, Kate said it had to be one not as well known

Maybe Brazil? however somewhere not obvious in Brazil, like Rio. Maybe Ouro Preto? Ouro Preto has beautiful 17th century colonial architecture. Families can visit museums, the old mines, the churches ect. The 18-30YO's and backbackers can travel up to the forest which is a mile away to do outdoor activities. It's a designated World Heritage Site by UNESCO because of its outstanding Baroque architecture. Main economic activities are tourism, transformation industries, and mineral riches such as deposits of iron, bauxite, manganese, talc and marble.

Minerals of note are: gold, hematite, dolomite, tourmaline, pyrite, muscovite, topaz and imperial topaz. The imperial topaz is a stone only found in Ouro Preto.

I like it Loukas, though I doubt that this current young-generation would be attracted to it as much.. if we aren't looking to sell to them then that's fine

we could create wood cabins for people to stay in in the near by forest? That would appeal more to the younger audience?

Yeah but then we are building a whole activity centre and accommodation, our task is to promot a current place and use existing things?

Loukas
26-03-2014, 05:44 PM
Yeah but then we are building a whole activity centre and accommodation, our task is to promot a current place and use existing things?

Where does it say that we can't create an activity centre? It suitable to host those activities in the area so why not, plus i mentioned loads of other things that are available to do in the area too! We are meant to boost the tourism, an activity centre could do that?

Jake.
26-03-2014, 06:03 PM
What about East Timor? It only has 40,000 tourists, its scenery, hiking and scuba diving activities could be advertised to many fanatics

Loukas

so this place doesn't exist? :conf:

http://i61.tinypic.com/2wco39z.png

I don't understand what you are trying to say? What exactly have i designed? I'm so baffed lol.

The idea was to promote the area by saying it has an activity centre for the younger audience, thats all.

There are 4 museums, numerous churches, many famous for their religious art and baroque architecture, A number of former gold mines in the city also offer tours to tourists.

and like i said before Pothuthic, what/where do you suggest??

Loukas
26-03-2014, 06:32 PM
Yeah but Brazil's a popular destination is it not? We need to target somewhere with a low tourist ratio

Brazil it's self is massive, it's the 5th largest country in the world. This is a tiny, tiny part of it that could do with a boost of tourism.

Holiday Hotspot

Needless to say a lot of the time the team work has been underwhelming, and teamwork is a big factor in the success of a business.

For this next project you will ALL be working together to create a promotional pitch for a holiday destination. The destination must be a real place, but one that comes from a lesser known country; your job is trying to boost their tourism trade.

How you promote this is up to you; you can look at creating an advert, poster, statistics of the country, things it offers, flight, hotels, activity costs etc. You need to make this destination seem like the next best thing to go to for holiday. You should also think about your market; are you aiming for families, backpackers, 18-30's and what is has to offer for them. Research of things may help you with this and focus on USP's will help.

At the end one of you will pitch your piece to us and then will be questioned about it (only that person can respond so choose wisely and make sure they are well briefed).

This close in communication should be a lot smoother and you should all be wanting to show-case your strengths, let's see how well it works...

Mitchell
26-03-2014, 08:33 PM
I am really not keen on this whole 'make up an activity centre' etc, I'd rather do a presentation with pictures of a real place (I know Brazil is real, but you get my point), a real hotel in that place, real activities that already exist?

And surely Brazil isnt really a not known country?

Brazil is a well know country but it's a HUGE country and i wanted to boost that towns tourism. Ben put lesser in bold so im assuming he's trying to hint at something lol

Maybe somewhere like

Gdansk in Poland?
Gdańsk is a Polish city on the Baltic coast, the capital of the Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland's principal seaport and the centre of the country's fourth-largest metropolitan area.

10. Afghanistan: 17,500 tourists (2012, New York Times)

This is actually me in Herat. Photo by Marius Arnesen.
Why so few?
There's a war. Taliban is in it.

Why you may still want to visit
The mountains of Afghanistan are wild and beautiful. They are also hiding places for bandits and terrorists, so you may want to wait until it becomes a little more peaceful.

What else
You'll have a unique chance to try on a traditional blue burqa. I did for two minutes. Poor women! Do also remember to get your visa to the country you will return to in advance. Getting it inside Afghanistan may not be the easiest of tasks. Saying that you are in the country as a tourist will make you appear a liar, so do have a cover story *or be prepared to be declared less than smart.

Hmm this list is interesting for sure.

Długi Targ (Long Market) was once the main city market and is now the major focus for visitors. Sadly it’s all got a bit tacky in recent years and is now hemmed with tourist-class eateries, dubious amber stalls, quick-tongued touts and sun-shades keeping overpriced beer and their drinkers out of the sun.

According to local legend, the Neptune Fountain (Fontana Neptuna), next to the Town Hall, once gushed forth with the trademark Gdańsk liqueur, Goldwasser. As the story goes, it spurted out of the trident one merry night and Neptune found himself endangered by crowds of drunken locals who couldn’t believe their luck. Perhaps that’s why, in 1634, the fountain was fenced off with a wrought-iron barrier. The bronze statue itself was the work of another Flemish artist, Peter Husen; made between 1606 and 1613, it is the oldest secular monument in Poland. A menagerie of stone sea creatures was added in the 1750s during the restoration of the fountain.

Northern Poland’s best microbrewery cooks up award-winning dark, wheat and lager beers in polished copper vats amid sepia photos of old Gdańsk. Tables are tightly packed but this place lacks a beer-hall feel, possibly as it’s squeezed into vacant granary space in the posh Hotel Gdańsk.

'Golden Gate (Polish: Złota Brama) in Gdańsk (Danzig), Poland, German Langgasser Tor, is one of the most notable tourist attractions of the city.
It was raised in 1612–14 in place of the 13th century gothic gate (Brama Długouliczna). It is located at one end of Long Lane (Długa street, German: Langgasse), where, together with Brama Wyżynna and Wieża Więzienna, it forms a part of the old city fortifications.
It was designed by architect Abraham van den Blocke and was constructed by Jan Strakowski. The architectural style of the gate is Dutch manierism. Next to it is the late-gothic building of the Brotherhood of St.George.
Both sides of the gate have attiques, with figures symbolising citizen's qualities. They were designed in 1648 by Jeremias Falck ("Polonus"), and reconstructed in 1878 due to the originals being damaged by time and climate.
From the West side they represent: Pax (Peace), Libertas (Freedom), Fortuna (Wealth) and Fama (Fame). From the East side (Long Lane) they are Concordia (Agreement), Iustitia (Justice), Pietas (Piety) and Prudentia (Prudency). The Latin inscription on the gates reads: Concordia res publicæ parvæ crescunt - discordia magnæ concidunt, which means "In agreement small republics grow, because of disagreement great [republics]fall".
Destroyed in World War II, it was rebuilt in 1957. The original German inscription has recently been restored: Es müsse wohl gehen denen, die dich lieben. Es müsse Friede sein inwendig in deinen Mauern und Glück in deinen Palästen (Psalm 122)'

The Nightlife: There was a time when Gdansk's nightlife seemed a tad limited but things have changed. Whilst Sopot is recognised as the tri-city's party town, there are more than enough great bars and the odd club which will keep you in check.

The Scenery: Although many expect Gdansk to be covered in snow in freezing conditions, Gdansk provides warm sun-sets, lovely beach walks and beautiful buildings to give the scenery fanatics what they desire most!

The Culture: Gdansk's culture is wrapped up in its religion and history, and its numerous museums, monuments and sacred buildings attest to the senses of both itself and the divine.

St Mary's Street is a beautiful walk of historical houses with decorative facades, all of which culminate aesthetically in the world-renown St Mary's Church. The largest brick church in the world, St Mary's is a beautiful center of Medieval and Baroque art and architecture which dates its construction back to a late fifteenth-century completion.

Unfortunately the information regarding the Old City Hall must have been deleted from the word document by mistake, and I'm not able to fully read the information from the uploaded image, which I do apologise for.. I can't seem to recover it..

Why have you left it to the last minute, that's to Poth and Loukas btw. Communication?

1. I've been busy all day as you can probably expect with organising things for the party that's currently going on in my house that I am currently looking like an antisocial bastard since I'm not with them :p

2. I did ask Loukas for it a while ago but it wasn't sent

Poth I am right in assuming you are pitching this to myself?

Yes I am pitching it to you (and obviously the panel of judges), but I do feel that my presentation is adaptable to present to other people

Benjamin
28-03-2014, 08:02 PM
Poth, firstly who was responsible for choosing this location and what was the logic behind it?

Kate!
28-03-2014, 08:02 PM
Smh.

Mitchell

Poth, firstly who was responsible for choosing this location and what was the logic behind it?

Well we all suggested multiple places, but for us the idea of Gdansk was too good to miss out on.

We chose it as we felt it looked so beautiful which I am sure you can appreciate, we also felt it had everything that we aimed for, so for us if was perfect! This was validated to me by the taxi driver yesterday

Loukas
28-03-2014, 08:04 PM

Benjamin
28-03-2014, 08:07 PM
You can post the bits in here (Poth) as you are pitching this to me and can use them as reference (and only Poth)

Mitchell
28-03-2014, 08:10 PM
It was everything you hoped for Poth, so explain to me who your target market was for this and what its USP's are?

I don't think we had a precise target audience in mind after choosing Gdansk because it is so perfect for everybody in the family, but before it we were going for the adventure aspect, but when we found Gdansk it was obvious that a whole family could go and all enjoy something.

I think the above sums it up, it is unique as its perfect for everyone, you will struggle to find anywhere at this price with enough to do for every single member of a mixed family (even if you added grandads, grandma's etc they'd all have something to do too!)

Kate!
28-03-2014, 08:12 PM

I did ask to think about a target audience, I'm curious as to why you focused on "everyone" when you could have focused on one particular market. No place is perfect for everyone.

You also mention it is perfect for everyone but still haven;t told me what exactly are its unique selling points (USP's) that stands it out from other holiday destinations in Europe that are possibly cheaper?

Mitchell
28-03-2014, 08:13 PM
For reference here is Loukas' brochure that he created which explains everything Gdansk has to offer!

Because as much as one target audience is always nice to have, if it fits on even more people, it's better IMO, but I do get your point, maybe we could have worked on that better, but I do think we made a good case for it.

The scenery is absolutely beautiful, the old town hall is stunning and the sky diving school is out of this world from what I saw on their website, even I'd like to try it!

Mitchell
28-03-2014, 08:18 PM
Can I also add I don't like going abroad for holidays unless it's somewhere like Disney, any other holidays don't appeal to me, but I've even seriously considered going to Gdansk! My family would tell you me choosing a place that isn't a Disney property is a miracle! I spent ,y whole week in Mallorca in my hotel room on my iPad.

Benjamin
28-03-2014, 08:22 PM
I don't care much for your own person preferences, that was not the aim of this task.

Tell me more about the location. I see you have flights listed and a price. Is this a generic price, what are the flight times like, and what say I wanted to travel from Bristol, Manchester or Edinburgh to this destination? Do you not feel you have isolated your target market to just London and surrounding areas?

Mitchell
28-03-2014, 08:25 PM
I know it wasn't, but if I can fall in love with this place, literally anyone can!

This is the cheapest I could find as I know price matters a lot to customers too, I don't feel like we isolated, we just gave an estimate on what the price was like, you could also say "Do you feel like you isolated people who don't want to go on holiday in July" but it was just an estimate to tell people approximately how much it costs rather than how much it will cost for them.

Hmm, I see.

Going back to the attractions. You really feel an Amber museum, a skydive place and paint balling is a big enough selling point to lure people here? Do you not see these to be naff attractions to try catch people's attention to come here especially when people can do paintballing in the comfort of their own hometown without having to buy a flight and travel to do so?

Kate!
28-03-2014, 08:32 PM

Obviously I cannot speak for Loukas as he designed the brochure and I'm sure there was more information on the bits that were sadly lost.

If you can find a home town with the same beauty of Gdansk that has all 3 of those activities plus all the others I named, I will accept that point, odds are nowhere in Britain is as beautiful as Gdansk for a start

All of you what do you feel your strengths were in this project?

I felt I wrote a good pitch, I felt that I took on a bit of a leader role when I was present (other things stopped me from not being here at points) and I felt that I did well in the Q&A

Loukas

I suggested a large percentage of the locations before we all agreed on Gdańsk. I also spent a long time working on 2 sides of the brochure, sadly the file corrupted on one of them and i lost it. The other side included restaurants and bars that vary in prices to suit everyone, direction's to the local beach and a map pinpointing all places mentioned on the brochure. I think this is a strong point because i worked really, really hard.

And who do you feel deserves to be fired based on the merits of this task?

All of you what do you feel your strengths were in this project?

I said at the beginning that we needed a certain target market, and I compiled the advertisement which I felt captured what point we were trying to get across.

Jake.

And who do you feel deserves to be fired based on the merits of this task?

Poth, only because of the level of effort loukas put into the task from a design point of view.. fair play to Poth for doing his best with the pitch though

Mitchell

And who do you feel deserves to be fired based on the merits of this task?

Well I don't think I should be fired and I honestly see a fantastic candidate in Loukas which showed during this task

So due to process of elimination it'd have to be Jake.

But I feel we all have done a great job

And who do you feel deserves to be fired based on the merits of this task?

This is a hard one but sadly i would have to go for Poth only because i feel like his pitch was good but could have stronger, when you mentioned flights i thought his answer would have been stronger as he posted flight information earlier in the thread.

Based on the fact the focus of this was not a design task, do you not feel your efforts could have been better spent focusing more on trying to gather as much information or research as you could to make a stronger case for your final piece? Poth you yourself started market research, why did this not come through?

I do agree, what with people being busy the results weren't produced to a high enough standard and the research suffered because of this

I did do a lot of research when I had time to do it which was rare during this task due to personal circumstances, but not much of it covered the grounds of what would have been appropriate for the presentation.

I did share the results saying people wanted a family holiday, but the team seemed very keen on an adventure holiday, so I had to go with my team.

Yes i do. But i was instructed to create the brochure so thats exactly what i did. I did send some information on various locations as i told the other candidates i could do more before i started designing.I mentioned this unique bar that wasn't mentioned that i saw as a selling point for both the young adults and and backpackers http://www.brovarnia.pl/en/.

To an extent I agree with this, but I think I made up for this with personal research and on top of that the other things that I did, so personally I think the positives heavily outnumber the negatives.

The team also spent a lot of time at the start looking at places like Brazil, Australia and New Zealand. These are 3 massive tourist destinations and then you all wasted more time discussing building lodges and activities centers etc(which would have raised questions about taking jobs from the local community/businesses and planning permission etc) and was miles away from the objective of this project.

Who was responsible for most of this time wasting and why did nobody curb this idea sooner?

Myself and Loukas were guilty of this, and Pothuthic made the point of the task clearer, I think I let go of the prospect a bit quicker than Loukas

What personal research did you do?

Yesterday I researched the history of Gdansk, I researched reviews on the hotel that I suggested and I looked at the 4 'adventurer' attractions

I did bring this up constantly if you remember, from the start I suggested 4 European countries that weren't as popular (Slovenia, Slovakia, Serbia and Malta)

I also made it clear that I did not agree with the brazil or Australia ideas and I felt the whole lodges and activity centre ideas werent what we were tasked with, so I do feel like the other two were the two wasting time.

I tried to curb this idea, but I kept being told that it was a good idea :/

Me, i would say i wasted the most time. I mentioned New Zealand because New Zealand was the only country saw a drop in british tourists in the last year.

The top 6 countries for short term visits to New Zealand

Year ended Nov. 2012 || Year ended Nov. 2013
The amount of tourists in years 2012 & 2013

Australia
1,299,600 - 1,350,032

China, People's Republic of
194,752 231,120

United States
177,856 196,880

United Kingdom
191,360 190,816

Japan
69,968 75,052

Germany
62,656 68,384

i also mentioned Ouro Preto in Brazil cause it was a part of Brazil that not many people would know about. Looking back i could have focused more on the smaller countries of the world.

Loukas you say you were instructed to create the brochure, but this was a team effort. If you could see things were struggling why did you not step in and correct them or are you happy to pass the blame to one of your team mates?

To you all, who was the one in charge here or leading this task or were you all just scrambling around trying to make things work?

To be honest 500 people isn't a huge drop really? Especially for a country that is so highly visited.

With that point, the task did say to promote a lesser known country rather than a lesser known part of a very well known country.

There wasn't a clear leader, nobody appointed themselves and it was all a bit of a mess
