Not scared of controversy Madonna took a stand in her hugely controversial Moscow concert tonight. Her Russia dates have been talked about highly as protesters threatened to use violence at her shows. This is partly because of Russia's new law which prohibits homosexual imagery in public and party because of the Pussy Riot law case. The US embasy asked Madonna to cancel her shows, Today in Moscow - Thursday in St. Petersburg because of the threats towards her, her cast/crew and the general audience. Tonight in Moscow after Human Nature she removes clothes and faces the back of the audience with the words "Pussy Riot" on her back, normally it says "No Fear" and wearing a mask (below). She also gave a speach voicing the Freedom of Speach the Pussy Riot members should be entitled to. Bravo Queen!

After threats of being arrested Madonna again delivered a speech tonight in St. Petersburg. Madonna was said she could be arrested if she spoke out for Gay rights. As Russian law prohibits this it was a daring thing to do. Many fans wore pink wristbands and had flags in support of Gay rights. She gave a speech promoting equality. This is shown below. Ultimately as we follow through the journey of my story, the audience can see quite clearly what I see -
That the enemy is within and the only way to survive Disappointment Disapproval Judgment Heartbreak Jealousy Envy And Hatred Is with Love - not with revenge - not with guns and not with violence.

In spite of all the chaos and darkness and intolerance we seem to be encountering more and more in the world,
We cannot allow our anger or bitterness to swallow us up.
We come to understand that
There is an innate and pure love inside us all and we have to find a way to tap into it.

And we can't do it by being victims or placing the blame or pointing the finger at others.
But by recognizing that the enemy is within
And when we come to terms with it
And accept it
And struggle to change ourselves,
Then we can change the world without hurting anyone and we can inspire others to do the same.
When you watch a film there are usually good guys and bad guys to help illustrate this point, Sometimes I play both.
I enjoy acting out this journey.
For none of us are perfect and we all have our own journey of growth to go on.
I know people can relate to it.
It's very important to me as an artist that my show not be taken out of context.

I can only listen to about two tracks on the album now, hopefully she'll be able to make another good consistent pop album again in the future but I'm not optimistic. Most likely from American supporters who were pro the war in Iraq. It is definitely ahead of its time. The directors cut (which is longer) is below. MDNA finally leaked last night and it's fantastic, totally lives up to all the hype. It's pop at it's best and right up there with Madonna's strongest albums.

Gang Bang is so flawless, it didn't disappoint at all, love the dubstep breakdown in this and the ending is madly brilliant. Adore Nicki's line in I Don't Give A "there's only one Queen and that's Madonna, bitch!" :worship: Such a great song and I especially loved the choir at the end. Love Spent is amazing despite the excessive autotune, didn't expect it to like it very much when I first heard the preview but the snippet didn't do it justice. I'm Addicted is brilliant as well, love the MDNA chant at the end. Those are my four favorites currently but I know that'll change with further listens. Turn Up the Radio and Superstar are also great and sound very radio friendly, can see both becoming future singles. Overall it's so much better than Hard Candy. This album deserves to be hugely successful, whether it will be only time will tell.

Lawsuit against Madonna dismissed in Russia

A Russian court on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit that sought millions of dollars in damages from Madonna for allegedly traumatizing minors by speaking up for gay rights during a concert in St. Petersburg.

The ruling came after a one-day hearing that bordered on the farcical. During it, plaintiffs claimed that Madonna’s so-called “propaganda of perversion” would negatively affect Russia’s birthrate and erode the nation’s defense capability by depriving the country of future soldiers. At one point, the judge threatened to expel journalists from the courtroom if they laughed too much.

In the end, the Moskovsky district court in St. Petersburg threw out the Trade Union of Russian Citizens’ lawsuit and the 333 million rubles ($10.7 million) it sought from the singer for allegedly exposing youths to “homosexual propaganda.”

Madonna did not attend the trial, and her publicist Liz Rosenberg said Thursday the star wouldn’t comment about it.

Anti-gay sentiment is strong in Russia, particularly in St. Petersburg, where local legislators passed a law in February that made it illegal to promote homosexuality to minors. Six months later, Madonna criticized the law on Facebook, then stood up for gay rights during a concert in St. Petersburg that drew fans as young as 12.

“Who will children grow up to be if they hear about the equal rights of the lesbian lobby and manly love with traditional sexual relations?” one of the plaintiffs, Darya Dedova, testified Thursday. “The death rate prevails over the birth rate in the West; young guys are becoming gender neutral.”

The plaintiffs submitted evidence about gay culture drawn from Wikipedia pages, claiming that a real encyclopedia could not have articles about homosexuality.

“We aren’t against homosexual people, but we are against the propaganda of perversion among minors,” Dedova told the court. “We want to defend the values of a traditional family, which are currently in crisis in this country. Madonna violated our laws and she should be punished.”

Madonna, who performed in Moscow and St. Petersburg in August as part of her world tour, also angered Russian officials by supporting jailed members of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot. The American said during her Moscow concert that she would “pray for them,” then turned around so the audience could see the words “Pussy Riot” written on her back. The singer also donned a ski mask similar to those worn by Pussy Riot.

Despite international outrage, three of that band’s members were sentenced to two years in jail on hooliganism charges for performing a “punk prayer” at Moscow’s main cathedral, during which they pleaded with the Virgin Mary to deliver Russia from President Vladimir Putin. One of the Pussy Riot members was later released from jail on appeal, but the other two were sent to prison camps to serve their sentences.

Superstar was never fully released as a single, only a promo single in Brazil with a magazine.

Madonna this week has returned to Malawi for a visit:



KASUNGU, Malawi (AP) — Pop diva Madonna has opened new school classrooms she funded in Malawi.

Schoolchildren serenaded her Tuesday with praise songs as she inspected school blocks she paid for in the central Kasungu district. People danced around her at Nkoko Primary School where she worked with the non-profit organization, BuildOn, to build classrooms.

Madonna initially planned to build a $15 million 500-bed Raising Malawi Academy for girls, before changing plans to help fund several community schools to benefit more Malawians. She arrived in Malawi Monday to tour the 10 school wings she has helped to build.

Madonna has been joined on her tour by her two adopted Malawian children, David Banda and Mercy James, both now eight.

Madonna Remains Deeply Committed to the Children of Malawi

There have been many reports regarding Madonna's recent visit to Malawi. Some of these reports include inaccurate information and accusations by the Malawian Government on Madonna's character and the work of her foundation Raising Malawi. Despite the accusations, Madonna and her organization Raising Malawi remains committed to the health and education of the children of Malawi.

"I was very happy to visit with the children of Malawi earlier this month and to see with my own eyes the ten new primary schools in Kasungu province that Raising Malawi and buildOn completed this past year. These schools are now educating more than 4,800 children with girls attending in equal numbers. These children who were formerly learning outside on the ground, in unsafe buildings or not at all, now get to attend classes on a daily basis. My children and I were overjoyed to visit these schools and see what amazing progress has been made. I will continue to follow through on my commitment to help educate the children of Malawi. I'm saddened that Malawi's President Joyce Banda has chosen to release lies about what we've accomplished, my intentions, how I personally conducted myself while visiting Malawi and other untruths. I have no intentions of being distracted by these ridiculous allegations. I came to Malawi seven years ago with honorable intentions. I returned earlier this month to view the new schools we built. I did not ever ask or demand speial treatment at the airport or elsewhere during my visit. I will not be distracted or discouraged by other people's political agendas. I made a promise to the children of Malawi and I am keeping that promise" commented Madonna.

Madonna originally planned on building a Girls Academy in the impoverished country but realized that a more sustainable model would be to build smaller schools in villages around the country with buildOn who have had 20 years of success building schools in Africa. The original team that Raising Malawi first put in place included Anjimile Oponyo, the sister of Malawi's current President Joyce Banda. Due to major organizational problems that occurred during that time, the original team was disbanded. President Banda has since appointed her sister to a senior post within the Ministry of Education. Madonna's decision to change course on her education projects has subsequently been met by deep resistance from Oponyo, the President, and the Ministry of Education. But Madonna is not letting politics stand in the way of her deep commitment to help build schools there and educate as many children as possible.

In addition to the school projects, Raising Malawi has spent millions of dollars in Malawi to support orphans and vulnerable children through multiple community-based organizations. This includes Home of Hope which supported 595 beneficiaries including orphans, vulnerable children and their caregivers in 2012 alone. Raising Malawi also supports Dr. Eric Borgstein, one of three pediatric surgeons in Malawi. Dr. Borgstein performed more than 500 surgeries in 2012 alone and he sees thousands of children each year.

A few hours ago, I was lucky enough to attend the launch party for Madonna's secretprojectrevolution, a 17-minute short film made in conjunction with Steven Klein that's meant to address discrimination and injustice in the world.

I arrived around 9 for the event, then had to kill time until 10 before the doors opened. The e-mail containting the invite had stressed promptness, warning we may not get in if we arrived past 10:45. But too early was no good either. How would everyone get into the Gagosian Gallery between 10 and 10: 45? Turns out the guest list was just that small, maybe 250 people.

Inside, the room was spare. A wall-length image by Klein of Madonna and her MDNA troupe was a focal point, as was a giant image of Madonna's eye from the film. But what really got my attention (not counting the fact that Madonna's ex Sean Penn was strolling around) was a taped-off area before a blank wall where I assumed Madonna would (1) project her movie and maybe (2) perform in some way, or at least speak. So my friend Curtis and I parked front and center while most everyone else mixed and mingled and accepted booze from waiters in gas masks.

While we waited, artist Scooter LaForge told us he'd heard Madonna would sing a new song. We were so beside ourselves with this gossip we almost missed it: Madonna was suddenly at our feet—literally. Looking stunning in a tight black trench and with a strawberry-blonde coif, Madonna was on her knees inches away from us, smoothing out a white cloth. She spoke to those of us before her about the cloth's exact placement, "You guys are the front row. Don't let anyone **** this up." The stern warnings about no photography had already been globally ignored, so I grabbed a quick shot of the directrix at work, but we did keep that cloth in place. It was surreal to see her attending to this detail and then walking amongst her invitees.

Very soon after, Madonna entered the taped-off area and began a 12-minute speech explaining her motivations for making secretprojectrevolution, a work she called the most important thing she's ever done outside of having her children. Saying she didn't want to sound like a narcissist, Madonna nonetheless asserted, "Right now, I just wanna hear me." The whole place was totally silent while she pled her case and explained how the film was meant to kick off a social-media project in which people would submit their ideas of freedom.

"When I say I wanna start a revolution, that is exactly what I mean. I mean I want to start a movement of people, of artists, who are not worried about winning popularity contests, who are not worried about approval, who are not worried about whether their ass looks good—although it is important to have a good-looking ass..."

It was nice that her speech had space for humour, something Slant had said this new project was lacking. But Madonna wasn't laughing when she explained that her use of gun imagery was metaphorical—it's pretty obvious when you watch the film, something her ardent critics probably won't bother to do.

Just before the film began, we listened to a long snippet of a James Baldwin interview. Keep in mind we had been been told to sit down by Madonna, so my view was of people like Zac Posen and Zachary Quinto and Donna Karan sitting on their asses on the cold gallery floor.

The film itself was far more interesting as projected with perfect sound and perfect visuals within the controlled gallery setting. I still find it to be far from the most important thing I think she's ever done, but it is nonetheless a work of great passion that is just about the opposite of her commercial endeavors in and out of music. It's incredible that she is making time for something like this 30 years in to her career. If anything, the entire evening—minus the gold grills and other accoutrements of superwealth—felt like a throwback to Madonna's early-'80s Downtown days. I found myself wondering what Haring, Basquiat, Warhol and so many others from that era, from her own personal past, would think of this event had they not been outlasted by Madonna's desire to shake things up.

After the film, a series of dance routines unfurled, starring Madonna's MDNA performers. The pieces were beautifully danced (especially by Chaz Buzan and Marvin Gofin. Really spectacular to see up close.

Finally, Madonna, who had been seated on the floor several people deep into the audience, was dragged back onto the stage by two "cops." She then performed an exquisite cover of Elliott Smith's "Between the Bars" in perfect voice. (The song appears on the Good Will Hunting soundtrack, and as I recall, Madonna named that film her favorite the year it was released.) Madonna is taking chances as a filmmaker and sincerely believes she can start a love revolution that will change the world, but for me, it all comes back to the music, and hearing her perform this plaintive ballad a few feet away from me really touched me.

At the end, a black-clad figure dancing around Madonna was revealed to be her son Rocco, then they and the entire company took their bows as the room dissolved into full-on dance-party mode. Except for the fact that Madonna was standing in our midst, so most of the partygoers mobbed her as she purposefully made her rounds, greeting art-world VIPs and other glitterati.

Richardson shared pictures on Wednesday (October 16) on his blog of the 'Vogue' singer donning a black thong while posing in his studio for a Harper's Bazaar shoot.
