Celebration Premieres on iTunes as Free Download for 48 Hours

Madonna’s hotly anticipated new video for her 'Celebration' single will have its exclusive world premiere on the iTunes store as a free download for two days beginning Tuesday, September 1, 2009. Madonna is a multi-award winning visionary in the realm of video performance. The 'Celebration' video, which contains mind-boggling dance moves, reaffirms yet again her reputation as the master of the 'short movie.' The video will be available for purchase on iTunes on Thursday, September 3rd.
The 'Celebration' video, directed by long time Madonna creative collaborator Jonas Akerlund ('Ray of Light') was filmed recently in Milan, Italy and features the Material Girl dancing with her amazing troupe of performers from her current 'Sticky & Sweet' Tour. The video also includes cameo appearances by Madonna’s daughter, Lola Leon and model/DJ Jesus Luz.
Simultaneous to the video debut, Madonna’s definitive greatest hits album, 'Celebration' which has been totally remastered and includes two new songs, can be pre-ordered on iTunes.

Only for US im afraid.

It's So Cool is a registered Madonna song

Just a week after the writers of Revolver were made public, now we find another new Madonna song listed at Warner Chappell: It's So Cool, which has been long rumoured across the online Madonna community. It's a song from the American Life sessions, which means it's no surprise that Mirwais Ahmadzaï and Monte Pittman are credited alongside Madonna. It's Monte's second songwriting credit, after Easy Ride. It's So Cool is expected to be an iTunes pre-order exclusive bonus track for Celebration, reworked by Paul Oakenfold. On the other hand, there's no sign of the song "Broken (I'm Sorry)" from the Oakenfold sessions, which most likely means this track is being kept in the vaults and was not submitted to Warner.

Moreover, ASCAP's website lists several of the Sticky & Sweet Tour samples under Madonna's name now, indicating these were registered for the upcoming DVD release: "Put Your Hands Up For Detroit" (used in Music), "Feels Like Home" (used in Like A Prayer), plus 'Into The Groove 2008' which naturally contains the writers of "Toop Toop". While "Give It To Me" (used in Vogue), "Here Comes The Rain Again" (used in Rain) or "I'm Not Alone" (used in Frozen) are not listed here, we find 3 Gypsy songs: "Pala Tute", "Doli Doli" and "Me Darava". The latter two being credited to the frontman of Madonna's Gypsy band, Alexandre Kolpakov.

New song yipee!

It looks like we'll be having both edits of the "Celebration" video released, with the second one joining the one that will premiere tomorrow in a couple of weeks.

According to Warner Music, the "Celebration" video directed by Jonas Akerlund that we'll be watching tomorrow is the one filmed in Milan, Italy which features Madonna dancing with her amazing troupe of performers from her current "Sticky & Sweet" Tour and cameo appearances by Lola and Jesus Luz.
In a couple of weeks another edit of the video will be made available, Warners announced today, this second being the one including scenes shot with the fans alone.

As you remember from our exclusive reports, Akerlund has been working on a couple of different edits of the music video - one using the fan loved poppy Album Version of the song and another edited to the Benni Benassi remix.

Celebration video premiere & download

Celebration, the album - click to enlarge Madonna's brand new video Celebration has premiered this morning! The video, set to the Benni Benassi remix, features Madonna and her tour dancers getting into the groove to the new dance tune. Lola makes her debut as one of the break dancers. Jesus is the DJ, who gets seduced by Madonna, who undresses him and kisses him passionately. In two weeks, a second video will be released, set to the album version and featuring dancing fans.
For the next 48 hours, the video will be available as a free download on iTunes (US-only!). The online store now also accepts pre-orders of the Celebration compilation. When you pre-order the album on iTunes, you receive the bonus track It's So Cool.
Celebration is available in 3 formats:
- The single disc album
- The double disc album
- The double disc album with selected videos and exclusive unreleased bonus track

Please note that only US/Canada have all 3 versions listed, everywhere else it's the single disc edition. It's unclear for the moment whether this is temporary or not. But it seems permanent that Belgium has a version of the double disc that doesn't include Frozen. Instead there's the Benassi video remix and the bonus track to compensate. This probably means that Belgian fans won't find the Celebration CD in music stores...
The release date for the greatest hits album is September 18th/21st everywhere, except Japan (September 23rd) and US/Canada (September 29th).

Rumour: Madonna to direct ‘Wallis’

Madonna has launched a major charm offensive to get David Tennant and Cate Blanchett to star in her new movie project, Wallis.

It’s all about Wallis Simpson, the twice-divorced American socialite for whom Edward VIII gave up the throne to marry.

Madge sees a lot of herself in Wallis – as a fellow American who married a posh British bloke.

And she has made the movie her No1 work priority.

It is going to be another musical like 1996 flick Evita, in which Madge played Eva Peron. But this time Madonna is directing and producing, not acting in it (thankfully).

She has already taken Dr Who star David out for dinner to persuade him to play Edward.

And she is determined to get Cate to play the young Wallis after deciding against Keira Knightley.

I can see her point – Cate and David would fit the bill well as the pair, as you can see from my mock-up.

A source said: “The final script is now written and the locations have been scouted. Madonna is now trying to assemble the cast and put the finances in place.

“The first scene of the film is an old woman in her nineties living on her own in a Parisian flat. She starts to tell her life story to her housekeeper. It turns out the old woman is Wallis Simpson.

“There will be a song for each decade of her life.”

Rumour: Justin Timberlake to join Madonna on stage in Tel Aviv

Popular singer Justin Timberlake has arrived in Israel and is likely to perform on stage with Madonna during Tuesday and Wednesday’s “Sweet & Sticky” tour concerts in Tel Aviv, informed sources told The Jerusalem Post.

Awaiting Tuesday’s gig, there were already over 200 people waiting outside the gates by 3 p.m., hours before the gates were set to open.

“We will stand as long as we have to,” said Orit, 32, from Holon. “I even brought my pillow.”

Madonna returns to her dark era with Celebration video

What's your favorite era of Madonna? This is a fairly open-ended question, one certain to get about a million different responses. For every fan of the Material Girl Maddy, there are just as many who swear by her Vogue version, or her spiritual, Ray Of Light relaunch, or even her recent turns as a political activist, a disco diva or a candy aficionado. Really, there are no wrong answers here.

But, if you really want to raise eyebrows, try telling a Madonna fanatic that you're a huge fan of her Dark Era, a period that runs roughly from the release of The Immaculate Collection in 1990 to her disastrous appearance on "Late Night With David Letterman" in 1994. This was when she tackled the politics of sexuality head-on — whether it be with the Justify My Love video, or the "Sex" book, or the Erotica album — and got down and dirty (the Deeper And Deeper video, the Body of Evidence movie) and basically wasn't afraid of offending anyone ever.

Needless to say, this was a period when most didn't get what Madonna was going for because, well, it usually wasn't all that clear.

Still, looking back on that Dark Era now, it's pretty fascinating. Madonna went farther than any pop icon before her (or, somewhat understandably, after) — she pushed the envelope with glee and never looked back for a second. In retrospect, it's clear she wasn't being desperate; she was being brilliant. If only we could expect the same from the pop stars of present day.

Anyway, I mention all of that because on Tuesday (September 1), Madonna's Celebration video premiered on the iTunes music store. It is directed by Jonas Åkerlund, who helped shepherd her back to respectability with his hyperkinetic 1998 video for Ray Of Light, and features cameos by Madge's boyfriend (model/DJ Jesus Luz) and daughter (Lourdes, who makes a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance toward the end). It is pretty great, particularly because it is a direct throwback to Madonna's Dark Era.

We have Madonna popping and locking and pawing at herself, striking a series of provocative (and sometimes even submissive) poses, groping and grinding guiltlessly on her chiseled boytoy ... and doing it all in a gynecologically cut dress and knee-high boots. She is 51, twice divorced, a mother of four and she is (quite rightfully) unashamed by any of this. Sexual politics, anyone?

As for the song itself, well, it's a straightforward lunge for the dark and dirty clubs — the kind she hasn't really made since Deeper And Deeper (and probably hasn't visited since then, either). Produced by DJ Paul Oakenfold, it's all pulsing sirens, wobbly bass and four-on-the-floor beat, with an expansive electro chorus that sounds like a truckload of Nintendo Entertainment Systems exploding in unison (only sexier).

I'm not sure if Celebration — which is meant to promote her career-spanning greatest-hits package of the same name (due September 29) — signifies Madonna's return to her Dark Era (the other new song on the album, a collaboration with Lil Wayne called Revolver, might hint at other things), but it would be pretty amazing if it did. I'm not certain even Madge has got the stones to try it again, but there's definitely a void to fill these days if she did. The world could use a good spanking, and we already know Madonna's got the dominatrix getup. (source: MTV.com)

Sticky & Sweet is the 2nd highest grossing tour of all time

Madonna's Sticky & Sweet tour wraps today with the second of two shows in Tel Aviv, Israel (Sept. 1-2), putting the lid on what looks to be the second-highest grossing tour of all time.

With a gross of $408 million, Sticky & Sweet is the top-grossing tour by a solo artist of all time, and second only to the Rolling Stones' $558 million Bigger Bang tour of 2005-2007. "She is absolutely one of the great performers of all time," says Arthur Fogel, Chairman of Global Music and CEO of Global Touring for Live Nation, producer of Madona's tours. "That this tour will take its place as the second highest grossing tour in the history of our business says it all."

Since its launch in August 2008, Sticky & Sweet has moved more than 3.5 million fans to 85 shows in 32 countries, according to Live Nation. Madonna set an attendance record for the biggest crowds in history in Zurich, Switzerland, where she drew the largest audience ever for a concert in that country (72,000). According to Live Nation stats, her Gothenburg, Sweden show, seen by 119,000 fans, broke the record for highest grossing multiple shows in the country's history. In Helsinki, Finland, Sticky & Sweet sold more than 85,000 tickets, making it the biggest single show by an artist in history for all of Scandinavia. Other highlights on the tour included stops in Buenos Aires, Argentina (256,000), Santiago, Chile (146,000), Sao Paolo, Brazil (203,000), Tallinn, Estonia (72,000), Warsaw, Poland (79,000), Bucharest, Romania (69,000), and Sofia, Bulgaria (54,000).

Sticky & Sweet broke Madonna's previous record for top solo tour ever with her Confessions tour, which grossed $194 million in 2006, according to Billboard Boxscore. The 2008-2009 tour was the first under Madonna's $120 million, 10-year multi-rights deal with Live Nation.

Madonna 'reconciles' with brother Christopher

Madonna has reportedly reconciled with her estranged brother Christopher Ciccone - a year after he published an expose of their life together.
The Holiday hitmaker was allegedly furious over Ciccone's tell-all book, Life With My Sister Madonna, last year (08), which lifted the lid on the star's private affairs.
Ciccone also incurred the wrath of his famous sibling when he spoke to the media following her split from Guy Ritchie in late 2008.
The pop superstar has now taken the first step towards a reconciliation, according to British tabloid the Sunday Mirror, writing her brother an email in a bid to repair their broken relationship.
A source tells the publication, "Madonna did it more for her family than for herself. Her feud with Chris was creating huge tension within the family so she decided to be the bigger person. It's been a nightmare. She's calmed down since the book and had time to think. She realises blood is thicker than water and she will meet with him this year in L.A." (source: ContactMusic)

Belgian edition of Celebration does not include Frozen

There will be a Belgian edition of Madonna compilation album Celebration, without the song Frozen.
On July 11th, Madonna sang Frozen live on the festival ground of Werchter, but of her new Celebration album – 34 hits and 2 new songs – a Belgian edition will be produced, which excludes the forbidden song.
In 2005, a judge in Bergen ruled that part of Frozen (1998) was plagiarism from Salvatore Acquaviva's 'Ma vie fout le camp', which was composed in the late 70s. The composer from Moeskroen claimed that Madonna could have heard his song when she was a backup dancer for Patrick 'Born to be alive' Hernandez.
On the Celebration tracklist, Frozen was one of the songs selected by Madonna herself. "If we are not allowed to release this Best Of in Belgium, we face a huge budget problem", explains [Warner] marketing manager Bert Bieseman. "Still, we can't risk to release the CD with the song to music stores, because the fine we'd have to pay is huge."
After discussion with Madonna's management, it was decided to produce an exclusive Belgian edition of the double disc, without Frozen. Also on the Belgian iTunes and on the DVD, the song will not be found. Belgian fans wanting the complete version will have to order the album online or across the border. Celebration is released on September 18th

I just hope as Lil Wayne is with Madonna that will help boast the sales with a good video of corse.

WMG make my blood boil.

Update on Belgian Celebration release

As reported last Monday, Belgium will receive a separate version of the Celebration double disc, which doesn't include the song Frozen. The song will not be replaced. It now seems that the single disc and the DVD collection will not be available in Belgian stores.
Warner Netherlands also informs that due to delay in the production process, the September 18th DVD release is postponed to September 25th.

As previously reported "Celebration" hit the stores as a CD single today in those European countries where the new releases come out on Fridays.
In the Netherlands the new Madonna song was published as a 2-track single and a 6-track Maxi CD, both sharing the same identical artwork of the 3-track CD that was released in Austria and Switzerland last week.
The single comes with a price tag of 6 € while the maxi - also coming out in a slim jewel case and not in the thicker one typical of the European maxis - can be purchased for 12 €.

Bedtime Stories
American Life
Candy

and Confessions - Still love it tho!

I must say admit, I'm not that farmiliar with early Madonna so I don't own anything pre Bedtime Stories.
But obviously I know all of the singles - Cherish, Rain, Live to Tell etc. and all the obvious ones.

I'd say my fav. early Madonna song is either Into the Groove, Borderline or Lucky Star. I also LOVE the strings in Papa Don't Preach.

A report from a user of allaboutmadonna.com

Warner Music Germany screwing up the chart success of Celebration on purpose??

i translated a very interesting article from a german music/chart blog.

“Confusion in the german single charts. Where is Madonna?

Freitag, 11. September, 2009

Upset fans of pop superstar Madonna are complaining. The new single of the U.S. star is nowhere to be found in the german single charts.

This very unusual fact is concerning not only Madonna’s fans. How can it be, that Madonna’s new and pretty succesful single Celebration has not entered the official single charts yet?

The track was the number 1 downloaded song for at least 7 days right after the digital release. It has reached the number 2 spot on the german airplay charts. But it doesn’t show up in the official single charts.

Our investigations have come up with a very pathetic reason. Did Madonna’s label Warner Music Germany simply want to spare the costs of the download registration fee for Celebration?
The company that issues the weekly single charts demands a registration fee from the music labels if the download of a certain song is to be considered for the data calculation. The fee is a low, 3 digit sum.
It seems, that exactly this sum has not been payed by Warner Music Germany, the label with which Madonna is still under contract with for a few months. The consequence is, that Celebration has not been included in the data calculation for downloaded songs at all and therefore has no chance of making it into the official single charts at the moment.

A company that has earned millions with Madonna is not able to spend this tiny sum for the data registration? Are they trying to punish Madonna for leaving Warner and signing a new contract with concert promoter Live Nation?

Or was there an argument about the costs of the registration fee and Warner wanted to set an example? One thing is clear: a chart in which the most sold song of the week isn’t even included, has little significance and will cause a loss of trust with the consumer.
The consumer will wonder how often it has happened in the past that a song that sold well as a download doesn’t even appear as a footnote on the official charts.

Will Madonna’s song ever appear in the official charts? According to Warner Music, Celebration has been available as a physical Maxi CD since Sept. 4. 2009. The 1 track digital download of the song had the following release dates: Amazon.de lists July 21. 2009 (obviously just a virtual date), Musicload also lists July 21.
For the 3 track digital single the following dates are listed: Amazon.de July 13. 2009 (now that’s a virtual date times 2), Musicload August 4. 2009.
These early dates are strange because Celebration has been available for download for exactly 3 weeks (since August 24. 2009)

We believe that Celebration should be listed in the next issue of the official single charts, way too late. Of course the digital sales of Celebration since August 24. 2009 will be missing. Several tenthousand downloads.

In conclusion, what has happened here can only be described as pathetic. It can not be described as professional Marketing and you would expect something better from a worldwide star like Madonna and those people working with her.

Madonna's entire speach below:

Michael Jackson. [Cheers] I have a little bit more to say than that. OK, here we go again. Michael Jackson was born in August 1958. So was I. Michael Jackson grew up in the suburbs of the Midwest. So did I. Michael Jackson had eight brothers and sisters. So do I. When Michael Jackson was six, he became a superstar, and was perhaps the world’s most beloved child. When I was six, my mother died. I think he got the shorter end of the stick. I never had a mother, but he never had a childhood. And when you never get to have something, you become obsessed by it.

I spent my childhood searching for my mother figures. Sometimes I was successful, but how do you recreate your childhood when you are under the magnifying glass of the world?

There is no question that Michael Jackson is one of the greatest talents the world has ever known. That when he sang a song at the ripe old age of eight he could make you feel like an experienced adult was squeezing your heart with his words. That when he moved he had the elegance of Fred Astaire and packed the punch of Muhammad Ali. That his music had an extra layer of inexplicable magic that didn’t just make you want to dance but actually made you believe you could fly, dare to dream, be anything that you wanted to be. Because that is what heroes do and Michael Jackson was a hero.

He performed in soccer stadiums around the world, and sold hundreds of millions of records and dined with prime ministers and presidents. Girls fell in love with him, boys fell in love with him, everyone wanted to dance like him. He seemed otherworldly — but he was a human being.

Like most performers he was shy and plagued with insecurities. I can’t say we were great friends, but in 1991 I decided I wanted to try to get to know him better. I asked him out to dinner, I said “My treat, I’ll drive — just you and me.”

He agreed and showed up to my house without any bodyguards. We drove to the restaurant in my car. It was dark out, but he was still wearing sunglasses.

I said, “Michael, I feel like I’m talking to a limousine. Do you think you can take off your glasses so I can see your eyes?”

Then he tossed the glasses out the window, looked at me with a wink and a smile and said, “Can you see me now? Is that better?”

in that moment, I could see both his vulnerability and his charm. The rest of the dinner, I was hellbent on getting him to eat French fries, drink wine, have dessert and say bad words. Things he never seemed to allow himself to do. Later we went back to my house to watch a movie and sat on the couch like two kids, and somewhere in the middle of the movie, his hand snuck over and held mine.

It felt like he was looking for more of a friend than a romance, and I was happy to oblige. In that moment, he didn’t feel like a superstar. He felt like a human being.

We went out a few more times together, and then for one reason or another we fell out of touch. Then the witch hunt began, and it seemed like one negative story after another was coming out about Michael. I felt his pain, I know what it’s like to walk down the street and feel like the whole world is turned against you. I know what it’s like to feel helpless and unable to defend yourself because the roar of the lynch mob is so loud you feel like your voice can never be heard.

But I had a childhood, and I was allowed to make mistakes and find my own way in the world without the glare of the spotlight.

When I first heard that Michael had died, I was in London, days away from the start of my tour. Michael was going to perform in the same venue as me a week later. All I could think about in this moment was, “I had abandoned him.” That we had abandoned him. That we had allowed this magnificent creature who had once set the world on fire to somehow slip through the cracks. While he was trying to build a family and rebuild his career, we were all passing judgement. Most of us had turned our backs on him. In a desperate attempt to hold onto his memory, I went on the internet to watch old clips of him dancing and singing on TV and on stage and I thought, “my God, he was so unique, so original, so rare, and there will never be anyone like him again. He was a king.”

But he was also a human being, and alas we are all human beings and sometimes we have to lose things before we can appreciate them. I want to end this on a positive note and say that my sons, age nine and four, are obsessed with Michael Jackson. There’s a whole lot of crotch grabbing and moon walking going on in my house. And, it seems like a whole new generation of kids have discovered his genius and are bringing him to life again. I hope that wherever Michael is right now he is smiling about this.

Yes, Michael Jackson was a human being but he was a king. Long live the king.

The good news is that the midweek charts have been released in the UK and Madonna is number 2 with her new single.
The bad news is that Taio Cruz, who's currently leading the chart, is more than 10.000 sales ahead of "Celebration".

Also, all of the preordered physicals will have been counted as Monday sales, and given that "Celebration" is not doing well digitally - currently not even top 10 on iTunes - Madonna is likely to drop.

So Madonna fans, please think about it. More sales are needed to take "Celebration" to number 1 on Sunday - and if in the end we'll miss her 14th UK number one single we should remember it's all up to what we do NOW. You got the picture.

You can purchase "Celebration" as a digital single (individual downlads are more effective than EP bundles towards the chart), or you can get the video on the iTunes music store.
Head to your nearest retailer to purchase the one-track CD single (which is a UK only release) for only 0.99£, or the 6-track CD Maxi with remixes for 2.99£. The 12" Vinyl Picture Disc is also available, priced 5.99£.
Get up and do your thing!

Harry!
16-09-2009, 03:55 PM
The Wednesday updates on the UK Singles Chart are out, and unfortunately they don't look good for "Celebration" that slips to #3 and has the gap towards the current chart topper increasing quite a lot. The top 5 looks like this:

1 Taio Cruz 35.700
2 David Guetta 21.300
3 Madonna 21.000
4 Jay Z/Rihanna/Kanye West 18.200
5 Shakira 18.200

Lady Gaga hangs with Madonna

Lady GaGa met up with Madonna on Monday night at a Marc Jacobs fashion show in New York.
The Pokerface star posed with her idol and the fashion designer whilst attending the event the night after the VMAs.
Compared to the previous night’s nine different outfits GaGa’s get up was understated - she wore a studded black mask, gloves, dress and a white blazer to the New York fashion week event.
Madonna was attending with her boyfriend model Jesus Luz.
At the VMAs the Queen of Pop was asked if she minded Lady G being compared to her. According to reports her reply was: 'No, I’m very flattered.'

Rumour: Madonna to work with Janet Jackson

Her dream of singing with good friend Jacko was dashed by his untimely death, but now Madonna is plotting the next best thing – working with his little sister.

We can reveal that the Queen of Pop had a secret dinner with Janet Jackson on Sunday evening.

Over dinner at Butter in New York, the pair were overheard discussing how to honor Michael by “doing something together”. Earlier Janet, 43, and Madonna, 51, had been hanging out together at the MTV VMAs, where they were seen hugging one another.

And when we caught up with Madonna backstage, just after her tribute to Michael, she told us: “Now I’ve finally had a chance to say farewell to my dear friend.

“I can now say I have paid my respects to Michael. That’s why I’m here.

To say good-bye.” Then she added: “And Janet’s performance was amazing – just the perfect tribute to her brother.” Both stars then left the glitzy bash early – narrowly avoiding the fallout surrounding Kanye West storming the stage and dissing Taylor Swift.

Over dinner they seemed to be getting on like old friends.

Our insider reveals: “It was a meeting of two great musical try minds. Madonna was so impressed with Janet’s tribute to Michael that they started talking about how great it would be to honour him by doing something together.

“With that one performance, Janet proved she’s back on top of her game. And who better to join forces with than Madonna? “There was definitely something very interesting being planned between them.”

Liz: Madonna & Janet not gearing up for collaboration

Janet Jackson and Madonna are not planning on teaming up for a musical project, despite a report in a British tabloid.

The U.K. version of OK! Magazine reported that following Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards, pop icons Madonna and Janet, who were both part of the Michael Jackson tribute at the event, had decided to collaborate.

“It was a meeting of two great musical minds. Madonna was so impressed with Janet’s tribute to Michael that they started talking about how great it would be to honor him by doing something together…There was definitely something very interesting being planned between them,” a source told OK!, MTV U.K. reported.

When contacted by Access Hollywood, however, a rep for Madonna said the report was not true.

Additionally rumors that the two ladies went to dinner together following the VMAs also did not happen, the rep said.

Madonna: a rare and candid interview with the Queen of Pop
Madonna shows Dan Cairns all too clearly who is in control - of her life, her astonishing 27-year career, and their meeting.

The British nerve centre for Madonna Inc is to be found in two adjoining townhouses in central London. The buildings are a home for the singer and her four children when they are in this country, plus offices and a personal gym. From the outside, the six-storey edifices are standard-issue London mansions — that is, way beyond the standards most of us are accustomed to. There is something impregnable about such streets: an air of discreet luxury pervades them. Litter seems not to blow or rattle down their immaculate expanses; no chewing gum or urgently expelled kebab encrusts their gleaming paving stones. You might glance up at Madonna’s perfect residential pair and admire their symmetry, the cleanness of their architectural lines. But you would be more likely, unless you were a lurking paparazzo, not even to notice them; they are merely two houses in a long, wide street of the things. Anonymous, ordered, well maintained and with a touch of class. Madonna wouldn’t have it any other way. “Where do you live?” she asks when we meet later. Dalston, I say. The name doesn’t register. Stoke Newington, I add as a pointer. “That’s not even in London,” she scoffs. And it isn’t, to be fair. Or not in this London, at any rate.

The evening before I walk down her street and ring the doorbell, I visit another imposing building near the singer’s home. A few days earlier, a leaflet had been thrust into my hand. “It’s a Sign,” it read, and considering that it went on to invite the bearer to an introductory talk on kabbalah at the centre Madonna bought for the organisation six years ago, it seemed just that. The lecture offered an hour-long precis of what cynics would dismiss as woolly mumbo jumbo. One per cent of each of us is concerned with our corporal beings; concentrate on the remaining 99%, the speaker suggests, and we locate the key to a spiritually nourishing life. There is, however, an impression of calm, wellbeing, even complacency. And Madonna, as even a cursory knowledge of her questing, controversy-courting 27-year career will attest, needs calm. Because the opposite of calm, of control, is? “Chaos,” she says later. “Pain, suffering.”

We are meeting to discuss Celebration, the two-disc, 36-track greatest-hits collection that marks Madonna’s final contractual obligation to her record label before she skips off into the $120m embrace of Live Nation, the American concert promoters. Conditions have been imposed: no questions about adoption, about her divorce, about her love life, her faith; discussion is to be confined to her music. Refereeing the joust is the singer’s longtime American publicist, a formidable, don’t-mess-with-me powerhouse named Liz Rosenberg, whose manner, if not appearance, puts one instantly and inescapably in mind of the character of Roz, the giant snail in the film Monsters Inc, with her catch phrase: “I’m watching you, Wazowski. Always watching.” She has worked for the singer pretty much from the moment, in 1982, when Madonna was first handed the keys to the candy store of stardom. “By the way,” Madonna says at one point, “my dream was always to work in a candy store. It was because of my obsession with candy; I don’t have it any more, now that my teeth are all rotten. I did go to a university for a year, as shocking as that might sound to people, and there was a candy shop that I used to go to all the time, an old-fashioned one where all the candy was in these big glass jars. I used to go in there and look at all the candy and think, ‘God, it would be really cool to work in here; I could have candy whenever I wanted.’ So I did want the keys to the candy store, but I had different keys.” Confectionery’s loss, pop’s gain.

In Life with My Sister Madonna, Christopher Ciccone’s bitchy and embittered memoir, the singer’s brother recounts how every single minute of his sister’s day is planned and accounted for. Today, however, that schedule has gone awry. Seconds before I am due at her front door, a call comes through advising me to delay by 15 minutes. Which I duly do, only to be parked in the reception hall for a further quarter of an hour. It gives me a chance to take a look around. As I wait, Madonna appears briefly before descending to the basement, from which various sounds drift up: a peal of throaty laughter; a burst of her new single; and the noise of a vacuum cleaner. Is she catching up on housework, geed up by one of her own songs on the stereo and skipping round, Dyson in hand? Unlikely, but it’s an appealing image. In the hall where I wait, a painting by the 17th-century Dutch baroque artist Gerrit Dou hangs on one of the walls, which are covered with blue brushed velvet. On another wall, a pair of circular canvases show a troupe of pierrots, rope-dancing. Scented Christian Dior candles fill the air in a space so dimly lit, it seems both slightly theatrical and quasi-religious. A huge telephone with multiple extensions bears labels such as M study, M dressing room, M bathroom, Laundry, Music Room, Kitchen, Mews. The picture is one of great wealth combined with logistical and organisational rigour. Discipline, control, precision. “And that’s the definition of me?” Madonna says later, finishing my out-loud train of thought. “Yeah, but I don’t even think, when people write that, that they really believe it. I just think people are tapping into a zeitgeist and repeating things they’ve heard other people say; and it makes good copy.”

Our encounter finally gets under way in Madonna’s study, an all-grey room with a Frida Kahlo painting above the huge art-deco desk, glass shelves bearing art books and family photographs, and two semi-facing armchairs, on which we sit. In the flesh, in black trousers and a sleeveless shirt, the 51-year-old is tiny, even in heels, and pretty, her face somehow more animated and readable than you expect, her features forming into butter-wouldn’t-melt or knowingly ironic expressions as she talks. Her accent is noticeably clipped, with a Queen’s English clarity, a result of the amount of time she began to spend in this country following her marriage to Guy Ritchie. For a good 10 minutes, her discomfort is visible, a hand covering her face as she answers. And when, during this initial awkwardness, I lean into the space between us to emphasise a point, I sense without any room for doubt that I have crossed an invisible line.

You begin to understand why people are so in awe of her: you wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of one of her frosty glares. Does that mean, I ask at one point, that we have stopped treating her as a mere mortal? “A lot of people are just really confused by me,” she says. “They don’t know what to think of me, so they try to compartmentalise me or diminish me. Maybe they just feel unsafe. But any time you have an overtly emotional or irrational, negative reaction to something, you’re fearing something that it’s bringing up in you.” She pauses and looks over at Rosenberg. “Let’s all call our shrinks right now and have that discussion. Liz?”

When, last year, an American magazine writer profiled Madonna and wrote “Think back on her career. It’s not songs you remember, or not primarily”, you knew what he meant. Videos, film roles, marriages, haircuts, children, charity work: all carry visual freight that has often seemed to overshadow Madonna’s original claim to fame. But doesn’t Celebration, I suggest, indicate that the songs figured in there somewhere, too? That writer, Rosenberg barks suddenly from behind the desk, “is an arsehole”. “Those are harsh words,” Madonna chides, unable to suppress a laugh. “I don’t know, I guess it depends on what side of the fence you’re on. Some people don’t appreciate my music, so they’re not going to think of me as a musician or songwriter. They like to think of me as a sort of cultural phenomenon.” So people listen to her songs and react visually, more than emotionally or musically? “Right — ‘That’s when she had the cone bra on’, ‘That’s the burning-crosses song’. That kind of stuff. I suppose that’s partly my fault.” And when we sift through the milestones of her career, we look for, what? Motivation, irony? “Manipulation, provocation,” she says.

Another commentator wrote that Madonna’s “ability to absorb and incorporate knowledge keeps her one step ahead”. Certainly, her instincts about music, fashion and future cultural trends have proved uncanny. But doesn’t this concentration on her skill for assimilation overlook what she herself does with that knowledge? “Well, yeah,” she replies. “We can all take in information. It’s how we regurgitate it that makes us different. Right?” And might concentrating on the absorption remove her own subsequent input from the equation? “Well, it’s an undermining thing to do, isn’t it?” She laughs. “Isn’t that the point of the exercise?”

I ask her about her early days in New York in the late 1970s, where she arrived, penniless and a university dropout, to pursue a career as a dancer. And where she earned a reputation as a stop-at-nothing, man*ipulative, sexually promiscuous wannabe, discarding managers, bandmates and boyfriends on a whim.

Five years of hard graft, thrift, ruthlessness and opportunism paid off when she signed a record contract in 1982. But they also marked her, indelibly, as an artist; indeed, from the way she talks about the period, you get the sense that, no matter the rumoured £300m fortune, the art collection, the toy boy, the record-breaking tours (her most recent, Sticky & Sweet, grossed a staggering $408m), there is a part of Madonna that is still motivated by the cross-fertilisation and experimentalism of early-1980s New York.

Physically, she left it long ago. Artistically, she’s still there, in her own imagination at least: zooming around taking on influences and collaborators, draining them dry, moving on, a cultural magpie. The budgets, and the headlines, have got bigger; the spirit, she argues, remains. “The city will never be the same,” she says. “It was an amazing time, an amazing convergence of pop culture and art. To think I used to have dinner on a regular basis with Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. That was like an everyday thing. It was a much more informative part of my life than most of the parts people choose to focus on. I got to do gigs at places like CBGB before I got put underneath the microscope, and that was helpful to me, as an artist, and also to give me a sense of confidence about myself — regardless of the subsequent beatings I would take.”

Madonna contra mundum? It’s a condition you find in many artists, a willed psychological state that pumps them up before they rescale the heights with each successive album or tour. The affirmation of album sales — Madonna is the most successful female recording artist of all time — cannot shake such people from a sense of victimhood, of being misunderstood or under*appreciated. Possibly, this is rooted in the belief that what they create is ineffably trivial. That might explain why some, especially the intellectually curious (or insecure), dabble in a multitude of other arts disciplines or gather around them the appurtenances of cultural refinement and significance. (How revealing, after all, is that “I did go to a university for a year, as shocking as that might sound to people”?)

Madonna launches four-week MSN campaign
Warner Brothers Music has launched a four-week campaign for Madonna’s greatest hits album with the first takeover of the MSN Artist of the Month slot.
The campaign for the Celebration album and DVD will feature up to 45 video clips hosted across the portal, as Madonna takes over the prime editorial slot on MSN Music.
The release also features across MSN Messenger and Video.
Surrounding activity, planned by media agency ZenithOptimedia, includes display activity across sites such as Heat, MySpace and Popjustice. The campaign will also be tied into existing Facebook and Twitter profiles.
Katherine Parrott, marketing manager at Warner Brothers Music, said new video was being distributed throughout the campaign to maintain high levels of interest from fans.
'By taking over the Artist of the Month slot it acts as a long-term offering to remind people it’s out,' she said. 'We wanted to try something a bit different and used the success we had online in the past with Lily Allen campaigns.'

Chart Celebration ahead for Madonna

Madonna is looking to equal Elvis Presley’s total of 11 UK album number ones this weekend with her new retrospective Celebration opening up a narrow lead at retail.

The double set is presently a few thousand sales ahead of its nearest rival, fellow Warner Bros release The Resistance by Muse, which debuted at one last Sunday.

If Celebration remains in front it will place Madonna in joint second place with Presley behind The Beatles with the most UK chart-topping albums. Her tally of 10 album number ones dates back to 1984’s Like A Virgin and also takes in the Evita soundtrack, which features both her and other artists.

Madonna’s album leads another bumper week of new releases with four other newly-issued albums among the 10 biggest sellers of the week so far. These include Dizzee Rascal’s new Dirtee Skank-issued album Tongue N’ Cheek, which features his three number one singles, Casablanca/Island act Mika’s second album The Boy Who Knew Too Much and Pearl Jam’s Island debut Backspacer.

Oh dear!
Looks like Madge has some stiff competition.
It could be Muse. They're music is savage.
It could be Dizzie, backed by his 3 number 1 tracks "Dance wiv me", "Bonkers" and "Holiday"
Or it could be Mika. His last album sold millions which was quite a shock.

I hope Madonna gets it!
But it's not going to be easy.

[/b]Madonna talks about current and upcoming projects with Larry Flick[/b]

Last week Sirius FM aired an interview with Madonna, who talked to Larry Flick right after the Budapest show just a month ago. In the interview, she mentioned how exciting and fun the 2009 tour was, with visiting brand new places in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, also hinting at always being nervous just before hitting the stage. About the greatest hits album Celebration, she talked about not being a lookback girl, but appreciating that people want to hear her old songs, because she wrote "some good songs". She tries not to listen to them that much and on tour she gets sick of the stuff she sings every night, but likes to revisit some older songs. When asked about feeling an old song currently, she named Beautiful Stranger and pointed out the compilation would have everything that's not on the tour (possibly explains the omission of Human Nature, You Must Love Me & Give It 2 Me? ;-)... When asked about songs that should not be celebrated, she answered that each of them is important to her career and all of them describe the part of her life she was at when writing them. She named Don't Tell Me, Like It Or Not and Live To Tell as songs that resonate with her more, or are truthfully more about her than others. She said the people want to be inspired and expect political songs like American Life from her, while others want her "let's have fun" kinda music, and people are in different moods in different moods, just like herself. She listens to a lot of electronic music these days but could not club that much during tour. Also talked about putting a show together and getting prepared for a tour for months, calling it an endurance test. She absolutely cannot relate to the idea of touring with the same show for 18 months. About working with Paul Oakenfold, she liked his production for other artists and that he gets people moving and is a positive person. Also mentioned her daughter Lourdes being in the Celebration video, since she hangs out with the dancers a lot and is a dancer herself. Madonna was comfortable with Lourdes being in the video and thinks she wants to be an actress, not following her mother's footsteps as a singer. She also calls her the "super sister" in the family. About getting another child, she said her hands are full right now but "never say never". When asked about the sound of her next record, she said she did not have the chance to think about that, but always loves electronic music and is sure she'd keep going that direction, but does not know with who she'd collaborate. She currently has a directing project and several projects in Africa going on with two new documentaries and building a girls school. She called herself extremely lucky and blessed for having such a life. You can download the interview at AbsolumentMadonna.

Madonna 'snubs Lindsay Lohan at NY club'

Madonna reportedly refused Lindsay Lohan entry to a VIP party last week.

According to Contactmusic, the 'Celebration' singer ordered her security team not to let the Mean Girls actress into the private booth at an opening party for the Boom Boom Room nightclub in New York.

The root of the alleged snub is believed to stem from Lohan's recent unveiling as an artistic adviser to fashion house Emanuel Ungaro, ahead of Madonna.

The label's president Mounir Moufarrige previously said that he had met with five candidates before eventually deciding on Lohan, which included Madonna and Paris Hilton.

The 23-year-old is expected to make her debut for the Emanuel Ungaro brand at Paris Fashion Week later this month.

Michael Jackson: 'Madonna Was In Love With Me And Jealous Of My Fame'

The singer reveals his thoughts on the Material Girl in nine-year-old, never-before-seen interview...

It seems Michael Jackson may not have been quite as fond of Madonna as you might expect from her moving tribute at last week's VMAs.

The pair became friends in the early nineties, and went on several high profile dates, including showing up to the 1990 Academy Awards ceremony on each other's arm.

But in a nine-year-old filmed interview with his friend Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, due to be shown on TV this week, Michael claims the affection was purely one-sided.

He told Boteach: "I think she (Madonna) likes shock value and she knows how to push buttons on people. I think she was sincerely in love with me and I was not in love with her. She did a lot of crazy things. I knew we had nothing in common.

"She is not sexy at all. I think sexy comes form the heart in the way you present yourself."

The Thriller star believed Madonna was one of several stars who envied his fame, telling Boteach: "They admire you and know you are wonderful and great because they are jealous, because they wish they were in your shoes. Madonna is one of them. She is jealous. She is a girl, a woman and I think that's what bothers her...

"I get the fainting and adulation and she doesn't."

By constrast, Michael describes the late Princess Diana as his ideal woman: "I thought she was very special - very feminine and classy. She was my type for sure, and I don't like most girls. There are very few I like who fit the mould. It takes a very special mould to make me happy and she was one of them."

Boteach - who is allowing US shows Today and Dateline to broadcast segments of the interview this week - maintains Michael wanted the footage to be released to the public so his fans could gain a better understanding of his personal life.

Strange, then, that he should wait nine years until after the singer's untimely death...

Madonna: Saturday Night Live deal falls through

Lots of Madonna fans were really excited when they heard Madonna was supposed to host and perform on Saturday Night Live. The woman hasn't shown a sense of humor in years, so this would have been a perfect opportunity to prove she is still human.

Madonna's Saturday Night Live appearance would have been a perfect opportunity to promote Celebration, a worthwhile greatest hits set that nobody seems to know about because Madonna doesn't believe in promoting her albums anymore. What went wrong?

A source tells us that in order to perform two songs (one would have been an acoustic 'Live to Tell"), Madonna needed far more rehearsal time on SNL's stage than they would have allowed. She also allegedly refused to rehearse on a Friday for some reason. Eventually, SNL decided that she wasn't worth the trouble and Madonna, being the absolute perfectionist, decided that it wasn't worth it either.

Instead, fans will be able to "enjoy" Madonna's appearance on David Letterman this Wednesday. We can already predict what she'll talk about: Kaballah, kids, Michael Jackson, Israel, and Lady Gaga. Oh, she might even talk about the Celebration album!

Madonna equals Elvis record

From madonna.com:

Madonna's new compilation Celebration leaps straight to number one in the Official Album Chart and brings her level with Elvis Presley’s record of eleven UK number one albums, the Official Charts Company reveals today.

No other solo artist can match this achievement. Only The Beatles, with a total of fifteen, have had more number one albums in chart history.
This feat marks yet another record for Madonna, the most successful female solo artist of all time. She has also:

Spent more weeks at number one (29) of the Official UK Album Chart than any other female solo artist.
Had more UK number one singles (13) than any other female solo artist.
Achieved the chart double (simultaneous number one album and single) more times (4) than any other female solo artist.
Completed the highest grossing tour in history (her recent Sticky & Sweet tour) for a female artist.

Celebration brings together 36 tracks spanning Madonna’s entire career so far and includes a newly recorded song Revolver featuring Lil Wayne.

Celebration The Video Collection DVD with 47 tracks is released tomorrow, Monday 28th September 2009.

Madonna’s UK number one albums:
Like a Virgin (1984)
True Blue (1986)
Like a Prayer (1989)
The Immaculate Collection (1990)
Evita (1996)
Ray of Light (1998)

Madonna set to marry - report

http://d.yimg.com/i/ng/ne/wenn/20090928/14/3517607227-madonna-set-marry-report.jpg

Madonna is set to marry model Jesus Luz before the end of the year, according to reports.

The pop star met the sexy Brazilian in December at a photoshoot for W magazine, which saw the pair pose for a series of provocative photos, weeks before Madonna's divorce from filmmaker Guy Ritchie was finalised in January.

And according to biographer Randy Taraborrelli, her relationship with the 22 year old is so serious, she plans to tie the knot with him in a Kabbalah commitment ceremony within the next few months.

Taraborrelli tells Hello! magazine, "The pop queen has been dating Jesus since January and it is thought the pair may marry before the end of the year.

"Madonna is crazy about Jesus and has been telling close friends and family that 'I could definitely see myself marrying him. Yes, it's definitely on the table.'"

And the 51 year old, who divorced her first husband Sean Penn in 1989, refuses to allow her previous romantic failures to keep her from throwing a lavish ceremony.

Taraborrelli quotes a relative as saying, "She knows that's what Jesus wants. She has a lot of wonderful memories of both of her weddings. She doesn't want to slip off and do it quietly. She definitely wants a big and rather fantastic affair."

He also described a scene in which a child approached them during dinner and Madonna reportedly brushed the kid off, leading Jackson to say, "Don't you ever talk to children like this.

"She said, 'Shut up,' " he recalled. "I said, 'You shut up.' "

• Madonna 'hates Madge nickname'
Madonna has admitted that she left England in order to avoid being called 'Madge' by the nation's press.

The singer, who is often referred to by the nickname in the UK's tabloids, revealed that she despises hearing the moniker.

She told talkshow host David Letterman: "That's one of the reasons I left England, so I didn't have to hear that word anymore.

"Some people say Madge is a colloquialism for kinda like a boring, middle-aged housewife and some people say it's short for 'Majesty'. I think it can be quite respectable."

The star relocated to New York following her divorce from director Guy Ritchie in 2008.

That story is so old. We knew this since 2007ish. Thanksfor the post.

Madonna 'Kanye West Needs To Put A Lid On It'

Madonna has branded Kanye West as a "bit impulsive".

During the singer's interview with Ryan Seacrest this week, the host asked the 'Celebration' hitmaker her thoughts on the rapper - after he crashed the stage at the VMAs last month (wrecking poor Taylor Swift's speech in the process).

"He's a bit impulsive," Madonna said. "I would have given him a good talking to. He needs to put a lid on it," she added in response to his stage outburst.

"He gets confused and by the way, it's only an awards show. We're not passing a bill that deprives someone of their rights. He doesn't need to protest."

But Kanye will be pleased to hear that Madonna thinks "he's very talented."
