The media can really **** up your perception that way.
The media (US and UK) only report on exceptional stories, so you really can't judge reality based on the news media, which is only telling you the exciting stories. They only tell you the stories and cases they think are sensationalist enough to get people's attention.
They are a business that makes their profit from the number of people watching, and the more sensationalist the story, the more people watch. and the more the people that watch, the higher the price they can sell advertising.

..yeah, I guess you're right Alex, I hadn't really thought of it that way...going off topic again, there is a great book called The Girls by Lori Lansens about conjoined twin..(girls obviously..), Rose and Ruby and if you ever get the chance to read it, I would totally recommend it, it's extremely thought provoking and a lovely bitter-sweet story...
