Liverpool still need a good defener, another Sami.

Liverpool need more than another striker. You're full backs and wide men need looking at. The centre of the team is fine but on the flanks there's not enough penetration.

Correct if I'm wrong, but weren't Liverpool top scorers in the league last year so you've got no problems scoring goals. You just need to put away the weaker teams in the same way Man Utd do.

Girth that is true, Liverpool beat the top teams but slip up with the mid-table bunch.. Too many draws always cost us.
Liverpool, Man Utd and Chelsea will be fighting hard for the Premiership, i feel that Arsenal will be out of the battle again.. 4th.

Not sure if we were top scorers, I know we had the best goal difference though. I think we should just sign Owen for a few million and he'll be a good back up for Torres, and we'll have N'gog in reserve in case Owen is out too. I think Aurelio is good for us at left back, and we have Insua too, Dossena will probably leave... Arbeloa is usually good at left back but played crap in the second half of the season, so I think we'll definitely get someone else in to take his place. And then a left mid is needed, we're ok for right mid with Kuyt and Benayoun.

Owen is definitely not the player we thought he'd be after scoring that great goal in the world cup in 98. I'm not sure about him. He's a proven goal scorer and Liverpool definitely need backup for Torres but, like you, I'm not sure Owen is the answer. I can Owen at somewhere like Spurs or Everton or even Villa.

Steven Gerrard admits 2010 may well be his last chance to win the World Cup with England.
The Reds midfielder is desperate to qualify for next summer's finals in South Africa and feels that if they do, it could prove to be a defining moment in his international career.

"Will this be the last chance to qualify for a World Cup? I would say so," he said. "If we qualify I'll be 30 when the finals come around.

"For me it will be the last chance of doing well at a World Cup. Maybe by the time of the next one I might not be in my prime. That is a big motivation for me.

"We've now got two important qualifiers coming up and if we want to play in the finals we've got to get two good results."

Arsenal sign Ajax stopper

Author: Nigel Brown

Sport.co.uk understands Arsenal have completed the signing of AFC Ajax centre back Thomas Vermaelen for a fee believed to be in the region of £10 million. According to sources inside the club, the deal for the Belgian international will be confirmed in the next 48 hours.

The 23-year-old moved to Ajax in 2004 from Antwerp outfit Germinal Beerschot and has since played 85 times for the Amsterdam giants as well as accumulating 21 caps for his country.

The news comes only hours after former Arsenal captain Tony Adams revealed that he had watched the player on behalf of Arsene Wenger but hinted that despite his obvious quality his physical attributes may let him down.

"I think Thomas is a very good player but I don’t think he’s ready for the Arsenal," Adams told Setanta.

"I don’t think the punters at Arsenal would like another small one.

"I don’t know whether he’ll end up going for a bigger player. We’ll see how much money we’ve got first.

"I have been looking at the Dutch league, but to be honest with you it’s been decimated.

"It’s a poor league at the moment, there’s one or two players but they’re leaving too early as well."

Wasnt sure if it had already been posted.

Fulham set to land former Arsenal striker for £3million?
03:00 PM 03 June, 2009
Fulham Football Club have been tipped to sign Jeremie Aliadiere.

The 26-year-old French striker is expected to leave Middlesbrough this summer, after the Teesside club lost their battle against relegation from the Premier League this season.

A host of clubs from around Europe, including Italian duo Roma and Fiorentina and Spanish side Villarreal, have been linked with the former Arsenal player, but Fulham have emerged favourites.

As Roy Hodgson looks to bolster his squad ahead of the Cottagers Europa League campaign next season, reports suggest he is willing to pay £3million for Aliadiere.

Is he a Liverpool player?

Chelsea have conceded defeat in their pursuit of Kaka with the Brazilian due to be confirmed as a Real Madrid player for a world record £56.2m on Monday, leaving the Premier League club's attention fixed on Bayern Munich's Franck Ribéry and David Villa of Valencia as they attempt a marquee summer signing of their own.

CHELSEA OFFER DROGBA NEW THREE-YEAR DEAL

STRIKER Didier Drogba will be offered a new three-year contract by Chelsea.

Contrary to media speculation that the Blues were not prepared to hand him a fresh long-term deal, one will be put before the Ivory Coast international within the next week.

Drogba is seen by Chelsea as being irreplaceable and has proved his worth to the capital club yet again this season.

Despite his earlier problems with former boss Luiz Felipe Scolari, Drogba returned to his best form under the managerial tenure of interim coach Guus Hiddink.

He was at the centre of controversy following Chelsea’s Champions League exit at the hands of Barcelona when he confronted Norwegian referee Tom Henning Ovrebo after the final whistle.

Drogba’s foul-mouthed rant was seen by millions as he swore straight at the TV cameras.

However Chelsea have been impressed by his behaviour since the incident, for which he apologised almost immediately.

Chelsea now believe that it is better to keep Drogba than look for a replacement.

The club are convinced he can play a major part in their search for silverware under new manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Dons will not rush manager choice

After expressing delight at the high calibre of applicants, Willie Miller has urged patience as Aberdeen continue their search for a new manager.

The Dons director of football shares fans' frustration as the process of replacing Jimmy Calderwood continues.

But Miller told the club website: "The simple fact is, these things do take a bit of time.

"The fact there are several senior vacancies up for grabs at present probably hasn't helped either."

Motherwell manager Mark McGhee remains the favourite for the post but the uncertainty surrounding the post at Celtic could be a stumbling block for the Dons.

Falkirk manager John Hughes, Plymouth's Paul Sturrock and Wigan assistant Eric Black have also been linked with the job, while former Aberdeen players Lee Richardson and Noel Whelan have declared their interest.

"I know patience is not something that sits easily in football but that really is the message right now," said Miller.

"The fact nobody has been appointed yet has not affected plans for the new season in that we are currently finalising our pre-season plans and the players are all aware of what is expected of them in terms of fitness levels on their return.

"I am working flat out to finalise matters and as soon as I have done that, we will be in a position to make an announcement ahead of what I am confident will be an exciting era for the club."

Miller said on Tuesday that former international managers, former Scotland players, ex-international players from throughout Europe and people working in the English Premier League had already submitted applications.

He also revealed that there had been expressions of interest from former Uefa Cup winners and from Holland, Poland and the Faroe Islands.

He added: "There has been a considerable number of former Aberdeen players interested in returning and it's obvious just what a high regard they hold the club in and what fond memories they have of their time here.

"I would emphasise that, while we want to make an appointment as soon as possible, it is absolutely vital that we undertake all the due diligence required to ensure the appointment is the correct one ."

Calderwood left Pittodrie hours after leading them into the Europa League with a 2-1 victory over Hibernian in the final game of his five-year reign.

Aberdeen players will return to training on 29 June, with a pre-season tour of Austria planned, while their season begins in the Europa League qualifiers on 30 July.

United midfielder set for £5million Hull City move?
11:30 AM 03 June, 2009
Hull City Football Club are keen to sign Kevin Nolan this summer.

The former Bolton Wanderers midfielder left the Lancashire club for Newcastle United in the New Year, in what looked like a steal for the Magpies at £4million.

However, United suffered relegation from the Premier League on the final day of the season, casting speculation over a number of members of their first team squad.

It is believed Tigers manager Phil Brown, who worked with Nolan at the Reebok Stadium, is willing to strike a deal worth £5million with the St James Park club this summer.

Today's transfer rumours are all about quality over quantity. Whilst it's been a relatively busy news day with the talk of Gareth Barry still hanging in the air, there seems to be bigger news brewing on the horizon, and that bit of transfer news is coming from Merseyside regarding a certain Spanish star that Rafa's been tracking for some time now.

Believe it, believe it not, or believe it maybe, these are the rumours circulating Merseyside at the moment.

Rafa makes initial bid for Valencia's Silva
The Mirror has a story this morning regarding Rafa Benitez's top transfer target David Silva. According to reports, Rafa has launched an initial transfer bid for the midfielder that includes £15million plus want-away forward Andriy Voronin.

If Valencia accept this bid I'd ask a doctor to have their head examined. Whilst I'd love to have Silva for £15million and Andriy Voronin, then chances of this happening are slim to none. You and I both know that. And honestly, if the Mirror are planning on concocting the first transfer story regarding Liverpool and Silva this summer, why in the world would you use Voronin as the player bait? How about Babel AND Voronin to make it a little more realistic!

Mascherano linked with Real Madrid once again
The same Mirror story linking Silva to Liverpool also lays claim to a rumour that Real Madrid are once again tracking Javier Mashcerano for his signature. You can tell Florentino Perez that he can have his signature ... on a football or jersey! Didn't Masch tell the press before the end of the season that he was really happy at the club?

Well apparently he's supposed to be in a possible move to La Liga for £18m and Gabriel Heinze. If you didn't know, this is the EXACT same deal that was being reported yesterday regarding Xabi Alonso, minus about £4m. You gotta love the papers!

Yossi says no thanks to Madrid
Yossi Benayoun has been the target of a number of clubs recently including Liverpool's favorite club, Real Madrid. It seems like Madrid are being linked with about every one of our players at the moment. First it was Alonso, then it was Masch, and now it's Yossi!

It's too bad that Mr. Benayoun wants nothing to do with the club we thumped earlier this season in the Champions League. The Daily Telegraph is reporting that the winger is happy at Anfield and has no interest in leaving this summer.

Courtesy of the Telegraph:

"I have had some offers so maybe I need to talk with Liverpool.

"Unless you are Steven Gerrard, you are going to sit out one or two games. Thankfully I have been playing more and I hope it continues.

"It could be Real Madrid knocking on my door, I'd still rather stay at Liverpool."

I don't blame you for wanting to stay, Yossi!

Owen still on Liverpool's radar
Yesterday we reported in the daily rumours that Liverpool were in the running for former Liverpool striker Michael Owen (via Goal.com). Well I'd like to confirm that a day later Liverpool are still being linked with Owen (yes a whole DAY later).

The Guardian claims Steven Gerrard is begging Liverpool ownership to make the deal happen!

There you go Andyman David and Paul.

Ferguson targets Benzema to replace Tevez
May - 30 - 2009

The Man Utd manager Alex Ferguson has decided on a major shake-up at Old Trafford after being soundly beaten by Barcelona on Wednesday, with the major casualties being Carlos Tevez, Ji-Sung Park, Nani and Kuszczak, according to todays Daily Mirror.

Ferguson does not think that Tevez is value for money, and would rather spend such a large amount on his long-time target Karim Benzema. The Frenchman has remained loyal to Lyon so far, but now that his club have failed to win the French Ligue 1 title he may be finally convinced to make a big money move.

Ferguson wants to sell Nani and Park to finance his move for Wigan’s £15m-rated midfielder Antonio Valencia, while Kuszczak will be off-loaded to give the young England keeper Ben Foster more first team experience.

Benzema would be much better than tevez.

but selling nani and park just for valencia? what a waste...

I think it's sweet how he appreciated the club for taking him on when dr's told him he'd only be 4ft 5in. The club won't wanna release him, so I doubt he'd leave with his own free will. Maybe I'm really naive though!

Premier league revenues near £2bn

The Premier League saw its revenues soar by 26% in the 2007/08 season to nearly £2bn ($3.15bn; 2.2bn euros), a report into football finances has said.

The revenues of top-flight English sides were £1.93bn, up from £1.5bn a year earlier, Deloitte said.

Despite the downturn, 11 of the 20 top league clubs made an operating profit in 2007/08, from eight a year before.

But Premier League salary costs topped £1bn for the first time, and the clubs' total net debt was £3.1bn.

Two-thirds of the debt was carried by the big four of Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal, but Dan Jones, the editor of Deloitte's Annual Review of Football Finance, said those clubs all had business plans "that they feel make sense".

The strong revenue growth outstripped the ever-upwards salary growth, which boomed by 23% to £1.2bn, the biggest annual increase in absolute terms recorded by the Premier League.

"In season 2007/08 the big change was the new broadcasting deal - most of the growth came from there, " Mr Jones told the BBC.

The current three-year broadcasting deal - worth £1.7bn - began in August 2007.

"In the season that has just finished [2008/09] we think the growth is going to be a little bit lower, but it is going to get clubs up to that magical £2bn mark - which is a remarkable achievement, an average of £100m a club in the Premier League."

But he warned that the approaching summer months would reveal the extent to which fans and sponsors were willing to match their previous levels of demand, with clubs having to closely examine their marketing and pricing strategies.

"This summer will be critical for football clubs, it will be very interesting to see how the season ticket renewals go, how the corporate hospitality renewals go," said Mr Jones.

"I think that is why we are seeing a lot of clubs freezing season ticket prices, reducing prices. They are very sensitive to the fans and their corporate sponsors and the problems they are facing."

However, he said English football - at both Premier League and Football League level - was proving more resilient in the face of downturn than many other industries.

The wages to turnover ratio in the Premier League dropped slightly to 62%, a small decline, but still close to the previous year's high of 63%.

Wages paid by top-flight English sides grew by 23% from the previous season to £1.2bn.

Sunderland saw its wage bill soar by 56% and Derby County by 51%. Chelsea once again had the highest wage bill, totalling £172.1m

Premier League clubs increased commercial revenues to £447m, up by 12%, whereas matchday revenues grew more modestly, by 3%, to £554m.

Meanwhile, revenues in the Championship increased by 2% to £226m in 2007/08, with total revenues of the total 72 Football League clubs exceeding £500m for the first time.

However, despite revenue growth, improved profitability has remained elusive.

"For many owners, Premier League clubs represent 'trophy assets' with the potential to deliver a long term return but which at best break even annually, rather then a cash cow delivering an ongoing 'dividend'," said Mr Jones.

Indeed, of the total net debt of £3.1bn in the Premier League, a total of £1.2bn was in non-interest bearing "soft loans" from club owners.

Mr Jones also pointed out that while footballer's wages often attracted headlines, the amount of cash the industry put into national coffers was often ignored.

"One thing that does not draw much attention in the midst of all these huge numbers around football is the tax side of things," he said.

"So, in 2007/08 season we think the overall tax payment to the government from professional football in England was about £860m.

"When the new top rate of tax comes in that will go up to £1bn."

However, he said that despite reports of elaborate tax avoidance schemes around players wages, Deloitte was not aware of any being widely adopted by clubs.

Limited growth

As well as looking at the English Premier League and Football League the Deloitte report also studies Germany, France, Italy and Spain.

Italy's Serie A was the fastest growing league in terms of revenue, thanks mainly to the change in clubs in the league, including the return of Juventus, in 2007/08.

In joint second place after the Premier League, in terms of gross revenues, was Spain's La Liga and Germany's Bundesliga.

The Bundesliga, France's Ligue 1, and the English Premier League have been boosted by having secured long-term broadcast deals which deliver significant proportions of total revenue.

Presley eyes top level boss job

Steven Pressley believes he is ready to manage at Scottish Premier League level now that he has retired from playing.

The 35-year-old former Rangers, Celtic and Hearts defender played out the last half of the season at Falkirk.

"I feel ready for it," said Pressley, who has been coaching with the Scotland team under manager George Burley.

"I feel confident. I've got my own ideas about how a club should function and I believe I'm ready to take on that sort of responsibility."

There are currently vacancies at Celtic, Hibernian and Aberdeen but Pressley said he had not put his name forward for any jobs as yet.

"I'm not going to be rushed into any job," said Pressley, who started his senior career at Rangers in 1990. "It has to be correct for myself but I really do look forward to that challenge.

"I'm heavily motivated by management and coaching. I'm fascinated by that aspect of the game.

"At this moment in time, I'm studying my Uefa pro-licence. I've been on that course for 12 months now and it's certainly whetted my appetite for management.

"I'll be working hard to network and create the right opportunities.

"There are great opportunities for younger coaches at the moment and it's important for managers to be able to coach their players on the training ground. I like to be out there on the training field.

"There has been an emergence of young, forward thinking coaches coming into the game. You have Pep Guardiola at Barcelona, you have Roberto Martinez, who has been linked with Celtic, and Owen Coyle at Burnley."

On hanging up his boots, Pressley, capped 32 times for Scotland, said: "I made the decision several months ago.

"To be honest, it was a relatively easy decision for myself and that's why I knew it was the correct time.

"I'm more motivated now by the technical and tactical aspects of the game.

"Also, physically, I felt I could no longer produce the types of performance that I expect of myself.

"I had a very enjoyable career, which shaped me and developed me as a person, with all the experiences of the highs and lows.

"Possibly the highlight was leading Hearts to the Scottish Cup in 2006. That was a truly memorable moment."

We need Mike to come back to TiBB to see how well his threads doing. Best thread on TiBB, and the most popular (cos posts like "ikr" and "omg" don't count in the other... popular... thread).

Anyway just saw the Benitez thing with Birmingham. They could be a threat next season.

Talismanic Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who has featured for most of the season in a supporting striker's role, has admitted that he regarded Chelsea's box-to-box midfielder, Frank Lampard, as a serious contender for end of season accolades and cannot explain how the Blues man was snubbed for the commendations.

The Liverpool leader is quoted by This Is London as saying, "I was fully aware of the competition from Frank and surprised he seemed to be forgotten. He has had a great season and is such a consistent player.

"To get the nod above Frank and the others was a fantastic feeling.

"I felt the way he's been playing he would have been worthy of at least getting in the PFA Team of the Year. He is a fantastic player and he proves it by scoring 20 plus, year in year out.

"He is setting the standard for all the other players."

Meanwhile, Gerrard has also pushed for more Torres-like signings at Anfield. He is hoping for manager Rafael Benitez to add further world-class recruits to the club this summer.

Alan Dawson, Goal.com

my respect for gerrard is actually growing i did hate the guy but he seems level headed, lampard has had an amazing season yet not in team of the year wasn't even nominated for player of the year, and imo has been by far the best the premiership has had to offer this season.

It was all over papers a few weeks back and again a couple of days ago saying, what does it take to rank frank? He is concsistantly brilliant year in year out yet gets over looked

+5 Respect. for Gerrard.

Chelsea-Target Pirlo Can Leave Milan In Exchange For Drogba – Report
The Rossoneri are reportedly formulating a swap-deal in order to get their man.
4 Jun 2009 00:10:32

Carlo Ancelotti left Milan to become the head coach of Chelsea just days ago, and immediately three of his former stars from the Serie A have been linked with a move to the English Premier League.

The first was Kaka, a man who has been forever linked with a move away from the Rossoneri, but this time around he does look set to leave the Italian peninsula, as Real Madrid’s €65 million offer looks too good to refuse.

The other two Milan players are Alexandre Pato and Andrea Pirlo, both of whom have had offers made by the London-based outfit over the past few days.

According to the latest reports from 24oredisport.com, Ancelotti has called on the owner of his new club, Roman Abramovich, to do everything he can to get Pirlo to the Blues.

The Italian manager believes that the World Cup-winning midfielder would fit perfectly into his plans for the future; however, the reports go on to suggest that the Rossoneri would only be willing to discuss a deal for their star if Chelsea agree to offload Didier Drogba in return.

The Ivorian hitman is close to extending his contract with the FA Cup champions; however, if they do wish to acquire Pirlo, then they may have to reconsider their decision.

http://football-corner.blogspot.com/2009/06/will-liverpool-finally-move-for-this-la.html

With Gareth Barry now a Manchester City player, many people including myself, feel it's time Liverpool make a move for Valencia winger David Silva.

The Spanish midfielder has been linked with a move to Anfield on several occasions over the past few months, however as of now, Liverpool are yet to make a concrete bid for the player.

Silva, 23, is widely regarded as one of Europe's finest left sided midfield players and with Rafa Benitez clearly lacking in that department, I personally feel now would be the perfect time for the Merseyside club to make a move for Silva.

Much has been made of Valencia's financial trouble over the past 18 months or so and many people believe the La Liga club would accept any bid in the region of £22 million for Silva. If that is the case and Liverpool do have to cough up £20 million plus to sign Silva, they will obviously have to forget about the likes of Carlos Tevez, but I firmly believe Silva would be an all round better signing for Liverpool at the present moment.

They made a stupid 12m offer and some useless player already.
They need to step it up and just offer 20m hes easily worth 30 anyway.

Yes i want drogba to stay they have offered him a 3 year contract (chelsea) so should be okay.

and Yes Liverpool need to stop talking about barry and other shitty transfers and realise the phenomenom which is david silva.

Spanish international, possibly on par with gerrard in ability, you can get him on the cheap to.

he would be amazing, there should be more coverage on it.

Arsenal target Buffon and Juve teammate

Arsenal are reportedly lining up a sensational double raid on Juventus for their highly vaunted goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and defender Giorgio Chiellini according to reports in Italy.

Tottomercatoweb.com suggest Arsene Wenger will approach Juve this summer hoping to persuade the experienced pair to join his youthful squad at the Emirates.

Arsenal have set aside €20 million for the world’s most expensive goalkeeper, who has also been linked with Manchester United, Manchester City and Barcelona, and having recently expressed his unhappiness at some of the criticism he has received this year, an unlikely move may suddenly appear possible.

Chiellini has been capped 19 times by Italy, and played over 100 games for Juventus following a €6.5 million move from Fiorentina in 2004. He is highly rated and at 6ft 1” and 24 years old, he may be the physical presence Arsene Wenger is looking for to bolster his fragile defence.

Im not sure, about him hes less than a year younger than alumnia, and is already losing it hes not as good as he used to be.

Arsenal midfielder looking to move

Arsenal, 11:22, June 4, 2009

Emmanuel Eboue claims his future at Arsenal isn't clear and he may be forced to move on in search of regular first-team football.
The Ivory Coast international endured a difficult season with the Gunners, where he was regularly jeered a booed by sections of the crowd and found first team opportunities limited.

With Arsene Wenger reportedly only having £13million to rebuild his Arsenal squad after another trophy less season and Inter Milan tracking the right-sided midfielder Eboue could be on his way following his comments on Wednesday.

"My future at Arsenal is not clear yet. I did not play a lot in the season and the World Cup is coming," said Eboue.

"There are many clubs interested in me, so let's wait. Before the season's start I will make a decision."

In Betfair you can either make a back bet (bet on who's going to win) or place a lay bet (bet against something happening). Betfair matches people on either side of the bet with the odds they agree. Simple. Use this £10 free bet and give it a try.

Eboue is probably going to leave Arsenal then, not too bad, he is a great player though.

AC Milan hope £15M enough to land Arsenal's Adebayor

AC Milan intend to offer £15 million for Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor in the next 48 hours.

The Sun says the Serie A club are desperate to give their fans some positive news after Carlo Ancelotti's departure for Chelsea and Kaka's impending exit from the San Siro.

Milan offered £25m for the Arsenal striker last summer but the bid was turned down.

Their valuation has decreased after a mediocre season from the Togo international.

Adebayor netted 16 times last term - which was a huge disappointment after his 30-goal return the season before.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is willing to sell the 25-year-old as he attempts to rebuild a side which struggled to finish fourth in the Premier League last term.

In the next 48 hours.. i don't think he will leave for 15 hes worth 20+

Moyes eyes Martins move

Everton, 11:26, June 4, 2009

Everton boss David Moyes is reportedly keen to bring Newcastle's Nigerian hotshot Obafemi Martins to Goodison Park.
Newcastle signed Martins for £10million from Italian giants Inter Milan in 2006 but the player looks set to depart St James' Park this summer as the Magpies face the reality of dropping into the Championship.

Eveton boss David Moyes is keen to add another striker to his squad after being priced out of a move for loan-star Jo, who joined the Goodison Park side from Manchester City in a loan move last season.

It would now seem Moyes has turned his attention to 24-year-old Martins after the player's agent confirmed there had been interest from three Premier League sides regarding his signature.

It is believed that Arsenal and Aston Villa are the other clubs involved in a three-way battle for the Nigerian international's services.
