It has been said this is more than just a rumour that they will offer 40m... the price but unsure weather they will make and offer.

I think they will, and Valencia will accept.

They need money i think he could go for 30m, they are in massive debt.

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has identified Newcastle United's Sebastien Bassong as a top transfer target. Now that wouldn't go town well on Tyneside!

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is reportedly willing to pay no more than €20 million and €25 million for David Silva and David Villa respectively.

Stoke City midfielder Salif Diao has revealed that he has received offers from several clubs from England, Italy, and France.

Ex-Portsmouth player Paul Walsh has advised full-back Glen Johnson to stay put and reject a move if an offer comes in. Read More

Similarly, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has stated that the Gunners' defence needs to improve next season, hinting at a signing.

The Republic of Ireland picked up a valuable World Cup qualifying point with a decent display in Sofia.

A win would have put the Irish top of Group Eight but they will be satisfied with the draw which keeps them five points ahead of third-placed Bulgaria.

Richard Dunne stole in unmarked to head the Republic into the lead in the 24th minute from Stephen Hunt's free-kick.

But a defensive blunder by Kevin Kilbane let Dimitar Telkiyski in for the equaliser five minutes later.

Giovanni Trapattoni's side were on the back foot for most of the second half, much in contrast to the encouraging way they had started the match.

Home keeper Dimitar Ivankov was forced to make early saves from a Hunt header and a Caleb Folan shot as the Irish carved early openings.

However, the visitors were given a warning when Dimitar Berbatov looped a header just over from a threatening position.

Ireland got the breakthrough in the 24th minute when Hunt won a free-kick wide on the left.

The Reading man swung in the set-piece and Dunne advanced unopposed to plant a firm header past Ivankov.

But the lead lasted a mere five minutes as a blunder by Kevin Kilbane handed the Bulgarians their equaliser.

Kilbane, whose own goal gave the Bulgarians a 1-1 draw in Dublin in March, made a mess of clearing a speculative ball forward and Telkiyski took advantage by shooting home.

The goal visibly lifted Bulgaria and they went close again eight minutes before the break when Valeri Bojinov sent in a snap shot from inside the box and Dunne headed clear in front of his own goal as Given looked on anxiously.

For the first time, Ireland were looking uneasy, and Dunne had to intervene once again with four minutes of the half remaining with Bojinov about to pull the trigger.

Bulgaria looked for the winner they so desperately needed to boost their qualification prospects.

But a disciplined Irish side did well to limit the number of chances falling the home side's way.

The Irish wall did its job to keep out substitute Blagoy Georgiev's 77th-minute free-kick in a tense finish, with Bulgaria dominating possession but meeting stern resistance all the way to the whistle.

Aiden McGeady flashed a shot side as the match entered four minutes of stoppage-time during which the Bulgarians pressed in vain for a last-ditch winner.

The Republic, who still have not lost a competitive game under Trapattoni, are now one point behind Group Eight leaders Italy but they have played a game more.

Bulgaria: Ivankov, Milanov, Stoyanov, Tomasic, Kishishev, Angelov, Stiliyan Petrov, Telkiyski, Berbatov, Martin Petrov, Bojinov.
Subs: Mihailov, Todorov, Dimitrov, Topuzakov, Domovchiyski, Makriev, Georgiev.

Republic of Ireland: Given, O'Shea, St. Ledger, Dunne, Kilbane, Duff, Whelan, Andrews, Hunt, Keane, Folan.
Subs: Henderson, McGeady, Miller, Kelly, Best, Keogh, Nolan.

England will return from the arduous 7,000-mile round trip to Kazakhstan a step closer to World Cup qualification - but only a brief encounter with embarrassment in Almaty.

Coach Fabio Capello maintained his flawless record on the road to South Africa with a sixth successive victory in Group Six after a journey to Europe's eastern extremity and a meeting with one of world game's genuine minnows.

The gulf in these contrasting football cultures was not immediately obvious as England, against opponents fuelled by fanatical Kazakh support, almost suffered the indignity of falling behind before eventually exerting their authority and claiming the expected victory.

England captain John Terry needed to produce a crucial block inside the first 20 seconds to halt Sergey Ostapenko before the striker then saw a header ruled out for offside with the scoresheet still blank.

A linesman's flag silenced wild celebrations inside Almaty's Central Stadium - and also signalled the height of England's troubles as they restored order and Kazakhstan, as is their habit, ran out of steam.

Gareth Barry crowned an eventful week following his £12m move from Aston Villa to Manchester City by heading in his first competitive goal for England from Steven Gerrard's cross five minutes before the interval.

And as Kazakhstan tried to recover from this setback, Emile Heskey delivered his first competitive England strike in seven years in first-half stoppage time to effectively confirm the victory.

Gerrard, England's outstanding player, again played a key role with an ambitious long-range shot that caught Kazakh keeper Alexandr Mokin out of position. He could only claw the ball to Heskey, who completed the formalities.

Wayne Rooney, a subdued figure for the most part here, demonstrated his class with a stunning overhead kick 18 minutes from time. And Frank Lampard's penalty gave the scoreline a convincing appearance with a 78th minute penalty after Heskey has been hauled down by Renat Abdulin.

England's eventual victory margin had a ring of comfort, but this hot night in Eurasia was not without its early moments of discomfort.

Capello declared his satisfaction as he chalked off another game and another victory in his campaign to take England to the World Cup - but he will have surely been concerned by the slipshod start that offered encouragement to Kazakhstan and their fiercely partisan support in the opening exchanges.

He insisted England could not offer up the rigours of a trip to a country that lies only 200 miles from the Chinese border as an excuse for any flaws - so Capello is unlikely to mark down a leaden-footed start to jetlag.

And while England may have flexed their muscles to take a two-lead at the interval, it was lavish reward for an opening 45 minutes lacking in order and composure.

The Central Stadium, which resounded to the insistent beat of drummers as Kazakhstan made the brightest of starts, offered up a dated but atmospheric setting for the longest journey England will face en route to what they hope will be successful qualification for South Africa 2010.

Kazakhstan are traditionally quick starters at home, so it was with some concern that England appeared to be caught by surprise as they flew out of the blocks.

They were a step ahead of the sluggish visitors as the early blows were traded, and only Terry's bravery prevented Ostapenko from giving Kazakhstan almost from the kick-off in a grim echo of England's San Marino moment in 1993 when David Gualtieri scored inside nine seconds.

England's early frustrations were underscored when Barry was booked for hauling back Zhambyl Kukeyev, a yellow card that rules him out of Wednesday's next qualifier against Andorra at Wembley.

And it was a linesman's intervention that spared England after 17 minutes when Ostapenko headed in Kukeyev's free-kick. It sent the Central Stadium wild with a mixture of ecstasy and disbelief before it became clear, to all Almaty's obvious despair, that the goal had been correctly ruled out for offside.

It proved to be the dangerous Ostapenko's last meaningful contribution as he collapsed after a challenge and was stretchered off.

England finally gave Kazakhstan something to think about as the half-hour approached, when Heskey's shot was touched on to the post and away to safety by Kazakh keep Mokin.

The relief in England's camp was as obvious as their delight when they took the lead after 40 minutes, Barry heading in Gerrard's cross at the far post after a short corner.

Predictably, the goal was a defining moment as Kazakhstan's reserves of energy visibly slipped away. England inflicted further punishment in the dying seconds of the half, courtesy of Heskey's simple finish after Mokin failed miserably to deal with Gerrard's speculative angled effort.

Kazakhstan's early impetus, which had given England problems, had disappeared by the time Rooney wrapped up the win with wonderful piece of improvisation, scoring with a bicycle kick after his first effort had been blocked by Mokin.

It was merely a case of damage limitation and maintaining respectability for Kazakhstan in the remaining minutes, although Lampard added England's fourth from the spot after Heskey was dragged back in the act of shooting by Abdulin.

The Kazakhstan supported had created a wonderful atmosphere with their unswerving support of their own team and an obvious appreciation and excitement at being in close proximity to England's Premier League superstars.

And it was almost as a means of reward that Capello added another to David Beckham's growing collection of cameo England caps with a 15-minute appearance as substitute.

Capello declared this as very much a case of job done for England at the end of a tough trek east - and while the result may have yielded nothing for Kazakhstan, this whole week has been a rewarding experience for this country and an important staging post in their development as a football nation.

Meanwhile, second-placed Croatia missed the chance to close the gap on England when they drew 2-2 at home to Ukraine in Zagreb.

Why Liverpool and Rafa Benitez are already in trouble in the transfer market

The transfer window has only been open a week and Liverpool are already in danger of being left behind as Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid force the pace while Rafa Benitez's hands are tied.

Having come so close to winning a first title in 19 years, Liverpool need to capitalise on their progress this summer by adding the three players they need (striker, creative/wide midfielder, full back) to win the championship but with Benitez "on holiday", no new chief executive in place and bleak financial prospects, recruitment is going to be tough.

Last summer's top target, Gareth Barry, has already moved to Manchester City for £12 million and Liverpool also look like they will miss out on Carlos Tevez, who may well join Barry at Eastlands.

The speed and conviction with which City are moving is in marked contrast to Liverpool. Then there is Roman Abramovich's renewed enthusiasm for shelling out rubles: Chelsea are threatening Liverpool's efforts to sign England right back Glen Johnson from Portsmouth.

To cap that, the representatives of Benitez's priority target, David Silva, the Spain and Valencia forward, have been in talks with Real Madrid. Everywhere they look, Liverpool are being outmanoeuvred.

Instead of adding to their squad Liverpool have been put on the defensive. Real Madrid, injected with some of the old Florentino Perez machismo, are talking effusively about the gifts of Xabi Alonso. While Benitez was prepared to sell the Spain international at the right price last summer because it would have allowed him to sign Barry, that is no longer an option and, after a fine season, losing the underrated Alonso would be a major blow.

Benitez has repeatedly complained of how tardiness and a lack of conviction has previously cost the club the signing of elite players - Nemanja Vidic and Didier Drogba are the examples he often holds up. Those criticisms were directed, without much subtlety, at chief executive Rick Parry.

Well, Parry is standing down this summer and with Benitez having negotiated a more active role in recruitment as part of his contract extension he must now deliver. There is no doubt that Benitez has scouted players across the world with typical rigour and he is confident that the right hit-list has been drawn up.

But who is going to help him turn targets into signings? Ian Ayre, the effective commercial director, is favourite to take over, but no appointment has been made and, across Europe, deals are being struck.

Another, more drastic problem is that for all Benitez's ambition, he is operating under real financial constraint. The club's accounts, released on Thursday, have called the club's financial viability into question.

Quite simply, they cannot afford to service their substantial debts and, according to one source, could be losing as much as £1 million per month. That means the American owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett, need to plough in some more of their own cash or find outside investment, and that is unlikely before they refinance their credit deals on July 24.

If this wasn't such a high profile football club the banks would almost certainly not grant Liverpool an extension. As it is, the club will probably get six months.

This will have inevitable consequences on Benitez's ability to spend. The club will be pulling money in through season ticket sales but, according to one source, he has a budget of between £10-15 million – not enough to buy you one top class player, let alone three. Through strategic sales – or even the forced one of Alonso – Benitez might well be able put together one really substantial offer.

Silva is believed to be his priority and it was reported that, while ostensibly on holiday, Benitez met the player last week. Otherwise, reported targets are more modest: Sylvain Distin of Portsmouth as defensive cover, Brazilian striker Kleber from Cruzeiro and Tuncay Sanli of Middlesbrough to add depth to the club's attacking options. Competing for the very top players, as Chelsea, Manchester United and City are, is simply not feasible.

It is not looking encouraging for Liverpool. The latest Deliotte report on football finances, published on Thursday, shows Liverpool fourth in the wage table, paying £90m to Arsenal's £100m, Manchester United's £120m and Chelsea's £170m.

Those are figures for the 2007-08 campaign and since then, Manchester City have come on to the scene, prepared to pay more than any club in the world for the right player.

Liverpool's closest rivals in the pay scale, Arsenal, can offer life in London, state of the art training facilities and a superb modern stadium. Despite claims work will restart in 2012, it is not even clear if the 73,000-seater Stanley Park development is going to happen.

That means Liverpool have to trade on other assets to lure players to Anfield. The most obvious pull is the club's rich tradition.

Then there is the competitiveness of the current team – playing with Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres must be a draw. Benitez has exploited his connections in Spain in the past, too, to help facilitate deals. But Liverpool can't trade on these ineffable qualities forever.

It has taken an extraordinary effort to get as close as Liverpool did to winning the Premier League, losing only two games all season. How frustrating it would be for that heroic effort on the pitch to be undermined by a slack summer off it.

Gunners close to first summer signing

Arsenal, 12:03, June 7, 2009

Arsenal have sealed an £11.4million deal for Ajax defender Thomas Vermaelen, according to reports in Belgium.
The centre-back has been heavily linked with the Gunners over the past two weeks and Arsene Wenger has reportedly sealed a deal for the 23-year-old.

Het Laatste Nieuws have reported that Arsenal agreed a transfer with the Dutch club on Saturday night and say Vermaelen will sign a four-year contract with the Gunners.

If Vermaelen does arrive at the Emirates Stadium it will help to placate Arsenal fans who have been calling for more investment in the side and should also go a long way to helping Wenger achieve his dream of making the Gunners a stronger defensive force.

"The defensive record, that is an area that we want to work on and that we want to improve," the boss said.

Arsenal set to bid £9million for Udinese defender Cristian Zapata

07/06/2009
The News of the World have jumped on claims from Udinese defender Cristian Zapata to suggest that Arsene Wenger is set to bid £9million for the Colombian defender.

Zapata said last week: "Juventus, Fiorentina, Milan, Arsenal and Villarreal have requested information about me. There are many teams that are keen to sign me but an official offer has not been made so far."

As a result, Gary Ward in the Sunday tabloid claims: "The Arsenal boss tried to sign the Udinese centre-back last year but was rebuffed by the Serie A club. With a central defender again top of his shopping list, Wenger is planning a fresh bid for the Colombian."

The 6.1ft central defender, who can also play as a right back, has been at Udinese since the 2005/2006 season after moving from Deportivo Cali. Last season, Zapata played 24 times, scoring once and picking up three yellow cards.

The 22-year-old is contracted to Udinese until the end of the 2010/2011 season and crucially speaks English which would aid his integration into English football.

IMScouting’s network of scouts in Italy describe Zapata as "tall, quick, aggressive, the kind of central defender who can dominate a game. He can anticipate what a striker will do and stop them. Zapata is ready for a high calibre team."

Zapata’s solitary goal last season came in a 2-1 win over AC Milan in the middle of May.

Liverpool To Make Shock Move For Peter Crouch – Report
Could the beanpole striker really be heading back to Merseyside? A British tabloid seems to think so ...

7 Jun 2009 11:25:12

Liverpool are reportedly hoping to make a shock bid for former striker Peter Crouch in an attempt to lure the Portsmouth man back to Anfield.

The Sunday Mirror claims that Rafael Benitez is hoping to sign the England international for a cut-price £4 million, despite having sold him to Pompey for more than twice that amount less than 12 months ago.

The tabloid claims that Benitez is having to work under financial constraints and, with that in mind, he has set his sights on a move for Crouch.

The report goes on to say that the Reds feel confident they can make the move happen, as Portsmouth still owe the club half of the transfer fee they agreed to pay Liverpool for the striker.

Whether Crouch can be tempted to return to Anfield, however, remains to be seen.

Despite a decent goalscoring record during his time on Merseyside, Crouch grew increasingly frustrated at the lack of first team opportunities at the club and decided to leave.

He has since admitted that he feels he made the right decision in quitting Anfield and therefore may be in no rush to return.

Benitez fears Liverpool title bid set to collapse
07.06.09 | tribalfootball.com

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez fears next season's expected title push is set to collapse due to the club's financial problems.

The Mail on Sunday says Benitez is resigned to watching transfer targets follow Gareth Barry and, in all likelihood, Glen Johnson into the clutches of rivals.

Benitez seems unlikely to be able to make the one or two significant signings which captain Steven Gerrard believes the squad need, with the Americans struggling to make ends meet, let alone compete in the transfer market with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid.

The publication of accounts for the club and their holding companies last week laid bare the danger of financial meltdown if Hicks and Gillett fail to refinance their £350million loan facility with Royal Bank of Scotland and Wachovia.

Yet a random insuder has apparently said the minimum transfer budget will be 20m and they can outbid anyone but Chelsea in the premiership, aha i doubt it.

Sergio Aguero ‘Proud’ To Be Linked With Chelsea
The Argentine ace admits that he is happy to hear about interest from the Blues...
7 Jun 2009 10:37:36

Atletico Madrid's Sergio Aguero has admitted that he is flattered to be linked with a move to Premier League side Chelsea.

The Blues have been rumoured to be interested in signing the Argentine international, as they look to strengthen their front line.

‘El Kun’ has enjoyed another impressive season in La Liga, scoring 12 goals in 25 league games and helping Atletico finish the season in fourth place.

His performances have ensured that a number of clubs have been linked with a move for the striker, who has previously admitted he is happy at the club and would like to stay.

However, his latest comments suggest that he could be tempted by a move to the Premier League with Stamford Bridge, in particular, looking an attractive proposition for the 21-year-old.

Speaking to the Sunday People, the Argentinean said, “It makes me feel proud a team as important as Chelsea notices me.”

The news is likely to be welcomed by Chelsea, who have been linked with a number of strikers in recent weeks including David Villa, Samuel Eto’o and Alex Pato.

HULL BID FOR CAMPBELL

Hull City are reported to have made a £6million bid for Manchester United youngster Fraizer Campbell.

However the Tigers are expected to face competition from fellow Premier League sides Sunderland, Stoke City and Fulham, according to Sky Sports News.

The 21-year-old spent seven months on loan at the KC Stadium in October 2007, where his 15 goals helped Phil Brown's men achieve promotion to the top flight.

Despite his successful loan stint the England Under-21 international rejected the chance to join the Tigers on a permanent deal last summer, opting instead to go out on loan to Tottenham as part of the deal which saw Dimitar Berbatov move to Old Trafford.

But chances were few and far between at Spurs with manager Harry Redknapp handing the striker just one Premier League start.

The Red Devils ace still proved he could cut it at the highest level when he fired a brace to knock Liverpool out of the Carling Cup at White Hart Lane back in November.

Campbell's only other strike for Spurs came in the following game where he scored a consolation against Fulham.

"It'll be tight as I know Stevie Bruce, Tony Pulis and Roy Hodgson are admirers," Phil Brown told the Sunday Mirror.

MOYES RULES OUT EVERTON SALES

Everton boss David Moyes has warned rival clubs that his best players are not for sale this summer.

England defender Joleon Lescott has been strongly linked with moneybags Manchester City, while Australia midfielder Tim Cahill has also been asked questions about his future.

But Moyes has insisted that nobody is for sale as he is keen to add to the squad that finished fifth in the Barclays Premier League and made it to the FA Cup final last season.

"People are always going to be linked with your good players, and they might see Everton as not having that much finance, but there's no way we'll be letting any of our players leave," he said on Radio Five Live's Sportsweek.

"The chairman's said that and I've made it clear. Everyone is under contract. The one thing we've got at Everton is stability with our players. They are all under long-term contracts and we don't need the money.

"I'd like money to spend, but I won't be giving up any of my players to raise that money."

While Everton are likely to come under threat next season from big spending clubs around them, Moyes insisted he was happy working at a club where he has to be more careful with his money.

"I feel the way we've done it where we've had to build and work with players and make them better, and juggle one or two a little bit, I think that gives you more pleasure than going out and buying the finished article," he said.

HREIDARSSON INTERESTED IN RANGERS

Hermann Hreidarsson has revealed he would be interested in joining Rangers if he leaves Portsmouth this summer.

The veteran Iceland defender, 34, is out of contract at Fratton Park but is waiting for Pompey to appoint a new manager before making a decision on his future.

He said in the News of the World: "I would be interested but as yet nothing's been offered - at least nothing concrete.

"I'm still waiting on Portsmouth to appoint a new manager. I will have a word with him and see what he's got to say. But I would look upon the Scottish League as a good, new challenge for me.

"Rangers would be a good club for any player to move to, especially when they have the Champions League coming up next season."

Meanwhile, on-loan midfielder Aaron Niguez looks set to cut short his stay at Ibrox and return to Valencia this summer.

The winger, 20, has made just one start and three substitute appearances since joining Rangers in August.

Valencia sporting director Fernando Gomez said in the Sunday Mail: "We would have liked Niguez to play more matches in Scotland but, overall, we are pleased with his progression.

"It's been a beneficial experience for him playing in the Scottish Premier League. However, it's now time for him on come back."

BIG DUO BID FOR VALENCIA - REPORT

Wigan have received bids in excess of £16million from Manchester United and Real Madrid for Antonio Valencia, according to Sky Sports News.

The Ecuadorian winger has long been linked with the two European giants and it is now reported that the pair have tabled bids.

United are searching for creativity on the right after big-money signing Nani has failed to live up to expectations and Valencia is said to have impressed boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Real are desperate to overthrow Spanish and continental champions Barcelona and the 23-year-old was thought to be close to a move in the winter transfer window.

A switch failed to materialise, but it is now understood that newly-elected president Florentino Perez, who has pledged a return to the dazzling days of star signings from his first spell at the Bernabeu, is ready to test Wigan's resolve.

Valencia joined Wigan in 2006 in a loan move from Recreativo de Huelva and the deal was made permanent in January 2008.

The Latics are currently without a manager following Steve Bruce's move to Sunderland, but Roberto Martinez is expected to be unveiled as successor on Wednesday.

TOFFEES LAND US STARLET

Everton have completed a deal for American midfielder Anton Peterlin.

The 22-year-old has been on trial at Goodison Park and has done enough to earn a permanent deal with The Toffees.

Peterlin currently plies his trade for Californian-based Ventura County Fusion - who play in the fourth tier of American football.

Fusion are coached by Englishman Graham Smith and he recommended Peterlin to Everton boss David Moyes.

"I felt he had a chance," said Smith.

"He's a very intelligent young boy. He will go into medicine if he doesn't make it as a soccer player. He has the mental capacity as well as the physical capacity to succeed.

"Moyes put him immediately with the first team and Anton did not look out of place. For eight days, he applied himself tremendously well."

Moyes himself admitted Peterlin made a big impact and he is pleased to have signed him.

"Anton really impressed myself and the coaching staff with his attitude and undoubted ability," said Moyes.

"We are therefore delighted to give him the chance to establish a professional career here at Everton."

The player, who recently had trials with MLS side San Jose and Chicago, is understandably ecstatic to have earned himself a move to England.

"It's a cliche to say, but it really is a dream come true," said Peterlin.

"I've always aspired to play at the highest level."

FALKIRK MAY LET HUGHES GO

Falkirk will consider allowing John Hughes to talk to Swansea should they ask permission to sound him out about succeeding Roberto Martinez as manager.

Hughes has expressed an interest in returning to his former club once Martinez completes his move to Wigan on Wednesday.

Falkirk managing director George Craig insists there has been no official approach for Hughes but understands the 44-year-old's burning desire to test himself south of the border.

"There's no approaches been made - at the moment, it's all speculation," Craig told BBC Sport Wales.

"John has been making it known that maybe he's reaching that stage in his managerial career where it's time to see if he can face another challenge.

"He's been particularly specific to say that if an opportunity arose down south, he would be interested.

"If an opportunity was to come along for John, I would certainly not hold that against him to at least consider it.

"We would be very understanding and would hope that - between ourselves and John and whatever club that came in for him - we would be able to come to some amicable settlement."

Former Swansea striker Hughes took his first steps into management with Falkirk in January 2003, initially in a joint role with now-Burnley manager Owen Coyle.

He twice won the First Division, with Falkirk gaining entry to the Scottish Premier League at the second time of asking in 2005 after building a new stadium.

The Bairns thrived in the SPL until this season, when they completed a remarkable escape from relegation on the final day of the campaign.

But they reached the Co-operative Insurance Cup semi-final and the Homecoming Scottish Cup final, qualifying for Europe for the first time in their history.

Craig added: "He's done some remarkable things in his time at Falkirk.

"We don't want to lose our manager in the same way Swansea didn't want to lose theirs.

"What I've got to do is react to situations as they develop. Nothing's developed at the moment."

KAKA CLOSE TO DECISION

Brazil superstar Kaka has announced that he will make his decision on whether to join Real Madrid or stay at AC Milan in the near future.

The 27-year-old was speaking after he had helped Brazil to a comfortable 4-0 World Cup qualifying win in Uruguay and is said to be ready to reveal his plans for the future on Monday.

Zinedine Zidane, now an advisor to Real Madrid, stated last week that a deal to bring the former World Player of the Year to the Bernabeu was all but done, however, Milan are set to hold talks with their star man on Monday at the latest.

Owner Silvio Berlusconi will sit down with the player and his father in what is seen as the last chance to persuade the Brazilian to stay at the San Siro.

Everton manager David Moyes insists he will not cash in on any of his star players to increase his transfer funds.

Defender Joleon Lescott is the latest to be linked with a big-money move away from Goodison Park, with Manchester City rumoured to be preparing a bid.

"There is no way that we are going to be letting any players go," Moyes told BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportweek.

"I would like money to spend, but I certainly wouldn't give up any of my players to raise that money."

Moyes has been restricted in the transfer market by uncertainty over the club's commitments.

Newcastle expect a deal to sell the club will be completed by the end of June, according to the man responsible for brokering the arrangement.

Keith Harris, chairman of investment bank Seymour Pierce, also revealed there were "two or three" rival parties vying to buy the club.

"I'm confident there will be offers to consider in quite short order," Harris told Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek.

"It's a decent guess that there are two or three interested parties."

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley, who bought the Magpies in 2007, first put the club up for sale in September 2008, having invested £250m.

Toshack happy with Wales victory

Toshack pleased with youngsters

Wales manager John Toshack praised his depleted young side after their 1-0 World Cup qualifying win in Azerbaijan.

Dave Edwards scored the winner three minutes before the break after making the most of panic in the home defence.

"I think we are pleased to have got a positive result, particularly under the circumstances," Toshack told BBC Sport Wales.

"In view of the absentees which has been well documented, I think the side did ever so well."

Toshack admitted that the heat and lack of match practice took its toll on many of the players, but was happy with the way they held out.

Mark McGhee will be named as the new manager of Aberdeen once the Pittodrie club agree compensation with his current employer Motherwell.

The Dons made their move when it became apparent that Tony Mowbray was going to pip McGhee to the Celtic manager's job.

McGhee will be reunited with his former Dons team-mate Willie Miller, who is now Aberdeen's director of football.

In his two seasons at Motherwell, McGhee, 52, led them to third and seventh-place finishes in the league.

An Aberdeen spokesperson told BBC Scotland that there are still some matters to be resolved before McGhee can be officially named as Jimmy Calderwood's successor, but these should be sorted out in the next few days.

McGhee will be returning to a club which he served with distinction, under Alex Ferguson, from 1978 until 1984, when he left to play for Hamburg.

In that time he scored 63 goals in 164 appearances for the north-east club.

He was the PFA Players' Player of the Year in 1982 and a year later helped the Dons defeat Real Madrid to lift the European Cup-Winners' Cup.

Richard Dunne believes the Republic of Ireland are on course to qualify for the World Cup finals after a deserved draw in Sofia on Saturday night.

Dunne was on target against Bulgaria for the second time in the campaign to keep them unbeaten in competitive matches under Giovanni Trapattoni.

"The main aim was not to lose so we are pleased with the point," said Dunne.

"It was a good way to end the season and we can go into the new one full of hope about making it to the finals."

Defender Dunne's header had the Republic ahead for five minutes in the first half before Bulgarian midfielder Dimitar Telkiyski equalised.

"Unfortunately, when we scored we sat back a bit and they got the goal quickly enough," said Dunne.

"They really needed to win so they were always going to come at us and everyone just dug in a defended really well.

"I was delighted to get the goal. John O'Shea blocked Berbatov and it was a free header."

Trapattoni was encouraged by the contributions from his emerging players.

"Tonight we saw Folan, Best and St Ledger and slowly I think we are building a great team," said the Republic manager

Worthington praise for NI display

Highlights - Italy 3-0 Northern Ireland (UK users only)

Northern Ireland manager Nigel Worthington praised his understrength team after Saturday's 3-0 friendly defeat by Italy in Pisa.

Worthington handed first caps to eight players but the Irish boss insisted that none of the new boys had "let themselves down".

"It was a great experience for the players out there," said Worthington.

"We stayed reasonably solid in our shape. There are a lot of pluses from this game."

Worthington started with four new caps with Irish League players Colin Coates and Stephen Carson joining Chris Casement and Manchester United youngster Corry Evans in making their debuts.

Robert Garrett, Martin Donnelly, James Lawrie and Shane Ferguson were then handed first caps late in the low-key friendly.

"They have gone out and enjoyed the occasion and to get a full international cap is something to be very proud of," added Worthington.

The Northern Ireland boss also lauded the performance of the experienced Damien Johnson in an unfamiliar full-back role.

"Damien was outstanding and he and our other players were up against a very good Italian side.

"They are big and strong and their players put in a lot of hard work.

"They had a lot of possession which is what we expected."

Scottish Football Association chief executive Gordon Smith says Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor could return to the national side.

The Rangers pair were told they would not feature for Scotland again after making V-sign gestures from the bench before April's 2-1 win over Iceland.

But Smith told BBC Scotland that the pair could be recalled if manager George Burley felt it was merited.

"There could be some sort of spirit of reconciliation," he said.

Ferguson, 31, and McGregor, 27, apologised for their actions while on the bench during the World Cup qualifier at Hampden on 1 April.

Chelsea Admit Their Financial Targets Were Too Ambitious

Goal.com 18 minutes ago

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has revealed that the club will not reach their target of breaking even by 2010, according to The Mirror.

The Premier League side had set next year to balance the books at Stamford Bridge, but they have now admitted that this goal was too ambitious.

Roman Abramovich said, when he bought the club in 2003, that they should be self sufficient by 2010, but this will not be happening any time soon.

However, a Blues spokesman said that they have high hopes of coming close to achieving it.

Speaking to The Mirror, the spokesman said, "It was always an ambitious target and the likelihood of hitting it is not great. But the aim is to get close to it."

This statement may mean that the club will have to sell their players in order to raise revenue, with Ricardo Carvalho currently being trailed by Italian giants Inter.

Other players who could be heading for the Chelsea exit door are Deco, Juliano Belletti, Branislav Ivanovic and Salomon Kalou.

The sale of these players would greatly diminish the club's huge wage bill, as well as bringing in some money in transfer fees.

New Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti has been promised a big transfer budget, with the former AC Milan coach rumoured to be targeting the two Brazilian stars, Kaka and Alexandre Pato.

Fabio Capello gave a nod to Almaty's image-makers with a glowing recommendation for the National Museum and England's coach ended a tortuous trip to Kazakhstan three points closer to World Cup qualification.

It was smiles all round in the musty, over-crowded room where Capello pored over a satisfactory conclusion to England's visit to this eastern outpost of European football.

Capello did not make this 7,000-mile round trip to do the tourist bit, but he was happy to oblige England's welcoming Kazakh hosts one final time before sweeping away from the Central Stadium en route to the plane back to London.

Business is business and the only real Almaty keepsake Capello wanted accompanying him on that long flight was a sixth successive win in Group Six and the prospect of spending next summer in South Africa coming into sharper focus.

And it was duly delivered, despite early alarms, with another prime example of the pragmatism that is becoming the trademark of Capello's England reign.

In the build-up to a noisy, atmospheric night in this old sporting monument, Capello was drawn into comparisons between football and tennis - concluding England are fashioned in the mould of Rafael Nadal as opposed to Roger Federer.

If this was England as Nadal, they downed Kazakhstan by winning a first set tie-breaker before finishing off a demoralised opponent in three straight sets. It was a game that had anxieties but was ultimately comfortable.

England's opening 20 minutes screamed jetlag, but once they found their legs and Kazakhstan, as they do, lost theirs the victory was assured. Gareth Barry and Emile Heskey applied the blows before the interval, Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard finished the job in the closing quarter.

Capello declared his satisfaction, although some first half body language that suggested one of his expensive shoes had caught fire hinted at other, darker, emotions. Sergey Ostapenko's header gave Kazakhstan hope until a linesman's flag wiped out the goal, and with it the Kazakh challenge.

Such is Capello's confidence in England's players that when asked what would have happened had Kazakhstan's goal stood, he shot back: "We would have won 4-1."

Steven Gerrard's quality lifted England out of the early slumber, while Rooney's brilliant overhead kick was the stamp of class they will need in South Africa.

England wanted the win and Kazakhstan wanted to maximise the prestige and profile this game afforded the country. Both requirements were fully satisfied.

The Premier League is big business here. The two unlikely figures pictured staring out in an attempt to lure passers-by into a rundown local pool hall are Cristiano Ronaldo and Andrey Arshavin.

Indeed, as one member of the Kazakh media marched briskly to his seat one item of his apparel made him a man apart - namely his gleaming new England shirt.

So it was with a curious mixture of partisanship and star-struck admiration that the Almaty crowd reacted to events. It is rare indeed to hear names of the opposition cheered as well as the home players, and there was audible delight when David Beckham won his latest cameo cap with 15 minutes left.

This was a showcase for Kazakhstan that went some distance beyond 90 minutes of football. If this was to be Almaty's - and indeed this country's - spell in the sporting spotlight, it was time well spent.

This a place with prospects and plenty of space. It is the world's biggest landlocked state and its ninth-biggest country, so there is room to advertise and England's arrival presented an opportunity too good to ignore.

There was a sense of adventure on and off the field, a genuine realisation that this was a unique setting for an England international. Snow-capped mountains rose behind one end of the Central Stadium, China lay only 200 miles away, and there was even a sprinkling of the surreal as scores of stone-faced military figures stared unblinkingly into deserted stands long after the final whistle.

The Netherlands, Japan, Australia and South Korea all secured their places at the 2010 World Cup finals on Saturday.

Japan became the first team to join hosts South Africa in the tournament when they beat Uzbekistan 1-0.

A 2-1 victory away to Iceland meant the Dutch were Europe's first qualifiers, while 2002 co-hosts South Korea beat the United Arab Emirates 2-0 in Dubai.

Australia, in the Asia qualifying groups for the first time, earned their place with a 0-0 draw in Qatar.

Goals from Nigel de Jong and Mark van Bommel helped the Dutch seal their trip to next year's showpiece event.

Kristjan Orn Sigurdsson pulled a goal back for Iceland with two minutes remaining, but Bert van Marwijk's team comfortably secured the victory.

Chairman Huw Jenkins says the lure of the Premier League was too much for Swansea City manager Roberto Martinez to turn down.

Martinez is set to complete his move to take over as Wigan boss on a three-year deal on Wednesday.

But Jenkins told BBC Sport Wales he was "bitterly disappointed" by the Spaniard's imminent departure.

"He wanted to take up the opportunity of testing himself against what the Premier League had to offer," he said.

"That's what he based his decision on in the end.

As a local lad from Devon I can bring you the latest football rumours from the southwest. .

A high speculative story surrounds the future of Plymouth Argyle striker Paul Gallagher. Many people have linked him with a return to a small prem club but the truth of the matter is he will be joining rivals bristol city for a fee of around 1.5 mil

Argyle will look to Leeds' hotshot Beckford as a replacement. Yes, it is true many clubs are after him but negotiations are currently taking place and a deal is set to be finalised in july. The figure has not been set but with a takeover happening at the Green Army money is now no issue as chairman Stapleton has recently admitted the club have spent wrong.

Other strong news ––
Ronaldo will join Kaka at Real Madrid FACT!

Liverpool will battle for David Silva with Madrid also but should make the deal.

Liverpool will sign Lavezzi and most probably G. Johnson with Arbeloa, Lucas and Babel heading for the exit door.

Pato will not join Chelski, however Ribery may do depending on his choices.

Zlatan has showed interest and admitted he would like to sign for Barca, who probably don't need him but would love him.
