And here's the article that goes with the picture, if anyone is interested LOL.

Sunderland AFC today confirmed that Steve Bruce has been appointed as the Club's new manager.

The 48-year-old has signed a three-year contract with the Black Cats, until 2012, and will be unveiled to the media later this evening.

Bruce has established a reputation for producing well organised teams and for unearthing and nurturing terrific talent, something he has done exceptionally well at Wigan. In the season just ended he steered the Latics to a highly creditable 11th place finish.

A brief earlier spell at Wigan in 2001 separated stints as boss of Huddersfield and Crystal Palace before a six-year tenure with Birmingham City.

After completing the deal to bring Bruce to Sunderland, Chairman Niall Quinn expressed his delight: "Steve will bring a professionalism and strength of character to this club that will really help to bring us forward to where we all want to be. He knows more than anyone what football means to people of this region and I'm confident that he will be able to instill into our players exactly what it means to play for this football club."

Born in Corbridge in Northumberland, Steve Bruce has eleven years experience as a manager since becoming player/manager with Sheffield United in 1998. He has since taken charge of seven Barclays Premier League campaigns, five with Birmingham City and two with Wigan who he began a second spell with in November 2007.

Having taken over at St. Andrews in December 2001 he guided the Blues to promotion in his first full season and kept them in the top flight for four years. In 2007 Steve again led Birmingham into the top flight, his side only losing out on the title to Sunderland on the last day of the season.

Bruce will be joined by coaching staff Eric Black, Nigel Spink and ex-Sunderland striker Keith Bertschin.

Black is a former Motherwell and Coventry manager who had a spell as caretaker boss at Birmingham as well as being assistant manager at Celtic. He has been described by Steve Bruce as "a truly outstanding tactical coach with a comprehensive knowledge of world football."

Goalkeeping coach Nigel Spink played over 450 times for Aston Villa, famously winning the European Cup on only his second appearance. Spink spent six years coaching at Birmingham before re-joining Bruce at Wigan in January 2008.

Keith Bertschin scored ten goals in 30 starts (plus 13 as sub) at Sunderland from 1987-88. He joined Birmingham City as reserve team coach in November 2007, a position he has since held at Wigan.

AND, an interview with Steve Bruce (I'm spoiling this thread today... not!).

A transcript of Steve Bruce's exclusive interview with safc.com.

First of all, a very warm welcome to Sunderland Football Club. You've been appointed as new manager - how does it feel?

SB: Well, I can only say how excited I am. You know, when I first spoke to Niall and the new owner I was genuinely thinking: well - this is the big chance that I've been waiting for, for all those years.

It's a huge club - with great tradition, great supporters - all the infrastructure's there. It's just up to me now to produce a team that the supporters can associate with.

Obviously you've spoken to Niall. Everybody that speaks to Niall is infected by his enthusiasm …but you knew that anyway, didn't you?

SB: We all want to have a relationship with the Chairman, of course. Everybody in the game knows Niall and what a good ambassador he has been, and everyone speaks so highly of him - and rightly so. He was big crowd favourite. I played against him many times up here. Yeah, one of the reasons why I came here.

He didn't have to sell it, to be particularly honest. But the way the club is looking, the way the infrastructure is set up, with the new owner on board, I hope it can be a exciting times for Sunderland supporters.

It's up to me to ensure that I produce team which they'll associate with. I'm from the North East - I know what they want - and I'll try to give it to them.

One of the things that you do bring to the job Steve is a vast amount of experience. You've been a manager for 11 years and seven different campaigns in the Barclays Premier League, so you've been around the block and you know what's expected. You obviously got your finger on the pulse of the Premier League already.

SB: I know how difficult it is. We've all seen that. Even the big clubs, with Sunderland amongst them, have seen how difficult the Premier League is.

You're right; I've got my finger on the pulse but I am under no illusion about how difficult it is - it is the biggest and best league in the world.

But, if we can make a stamp on that, which I am determined to do, then I can't wait to get started.

It's not too long since you were at the Stadium of Light with a Wigan side that beat Sunderland 2-1 and obviously you had a draw at the JJB Stadium against Sunderland in the early part of the season. Did you see Sunderland live at any other time last season?

SB: I was at the second last game because we had Portsmouth coming up the following weekend so I have seen the club. The one about the Premier League is that it is saturated. I know all of the players inside-out. As I said, I can't wait to get started and working with them - and obviously add into the squad. It should be exciting times ahead.

As you said, Steve, you're from the North East, which is of course well known. Sunderland is a club you've known inside-out - since you were a young boy, I imagine?

SB: I think when you're from the North East, there's something bred in you. That certainly didn't do me any harm in my football career or in management. Wherever I go there are the same principles: work hard, play hard, I suppose - but make sure that you give 100 per cent in everything you do, and be totally committed.

That's what I've been with every club I've been with. That's the only way I know, and that's possibly because I've been born and bred here. I'm a normal working class lad, who has a crack, has a go and works hard. These beliefs never left me, really - and can only help me.

Everybody knows I'm from up here. It's been a long time - I've been gone for nearly 30 years, I think, so I'm looking forward to coming back and having a go at a really genuinely big club, with big tradition and big history and cant wait to get started.

One of the things we talked about with Niall Quinn was that he mentioned that he thought you would bring to the job is a steeliness to the side …

SB: Well, I think everybody knows that to play for me, you have to give 100 per cent. I'll forgive mistakes, we all make mistakes. I'll forgive that - I'll forgive a bad pass. What I won't forgive is anyone who shirks their responsibility or doesn't show enough commitment or passion to play for the jersey. That's all I ask for - 100 per cent effort and dedication towards that. And if you do that, you'll be ok.

You mentioned that you've been gone from the North East for 30 years. You started your career down in Gillingham there was talk that I have read recently that as a young lad Sunderland were one of the clubs that passed up the opportunity of signing you.

SB: Them and every other club! I went to every club - I think I certainly went to every club in the North East and went to half of Yorkshire as well!

Were you a centre half in those days?

SB: I was a skinny, scrawny, young midfield player who basically took a long time to develop.
I was very, very small and basically every club said the same thing: 'sorry son, you won't be big enough or strong enough' … and here I am now - on a diet!

So, yeah, I was here and I was shown the door very quickly. And not surprisingly, the state I was in, so I had to go down to Gillingham, which is about 330 miles away from the North East, which was difficult when I was kid of15 or 16.

But, I went and started off down there as they were the only ones who really wanted to take me. Everybody else showed me the door.

Obviously you did very well at Gillingham, but you first really started to cross Sunderland's path when you played against them for Norwich in the 1985 League Cup Final at Wembley.

SB: It was my first season with Norwich and I'd just come from Gillingham. I'd played in the lower divisions so Norwich gave me my crack. And of course, playing at Wembley. I remember the game was poor if I am being honest, I think we won it with a deflected shot, cross shot come own goal and I think that summed up the afternoon. But for me personally it was the first trophy I had won and set me on my way that I could play at that sort of level

Well I'm delighted to see that after being turned down by Sunderland as a player, being Man of the Match against us at Wembley, you've finally come back to the North East - you suit that red and white tie - and all we can do is wish you absolutely all the best, Steve.

SB: Thanks very much. I'm determined that we'll have a right good go at it and I'm looking forward to it immensely.

I know, it's vile. The actual kit is amazing though.

Gordon was one of the best goalies outside of the top 4... but he was constantly injured in training sessions - he hardly ever got a look in. I HATE Fulop, I could never trust him in goals and I'm sure he's the reason we conceded so many!

We need someone like Gordon who doesn't get injured so goddamn easily. I heard Rangers were wanting a tradeoff with Gordon, and we could have McGregor - since Gordon prefers playing in Scotland (plays for national team and used to play for Hearts).

McGregor is a good goalie, but not as good as Gordon.

LFC PLAYER OF THE SEASON: STEVEN GERRARD

Steven Gerrard is today crowned LFC Player of the Season for 2008-09 following a fans' poll on Liverpoolfc.tv.

Stevie G enjoyed another outstanding season at Anfield, for which he was named the Football Writers' Association's Footballer of the Year.

The skipper notched a total of 24 goals in all competitions - a personal best tally that saw him overtake Ian St John in the club's all-time record goalscorer list - to claim first place in our poll with an incredible 46 per cent of your vote.

What makes that achievement even more remarkable is the fact he attained that figure in just 44 appearances.

Gerrard started the season in dramatic fashion with a stoppage-time winner against Middlesbrough at Anfield in only Liverpool's second Premier League fixture of the campaign.

Injury forced him to start September's home triumph over Manchester United on the bench, but he marked his return to fitness with a bang by scoring both goals in the 2-1 victory over Marseille in the Champions League.

The 29-year-old skippered Liverpool to a Merseyside derby victory over Everton at Goodison Park before claiming his 100th career goal with a thumping free-kick against PSV Eindhoven in front of the Kop in October. He made his 450th Reds appearance against Wigan soon after.
In December, Liverpool's talisman secured a point against a plucky Hull City at Anfield. The Tigers raced into a shock two-goal lead, but Gerrard was at his dynamic best to fire twice in eight minutes to level the scoreline.

Later in the same month, the Huyton Hammer was in sensational form as Rafa Benitez's men thumped Newcastle United 5-1 at St James' Park, with Gerrard finding the back of the net twice.

The captain scored a goal in both of the Reds' Anfield clashes with Everton in January, but his season was disrupted with a groin injury sustained against the Blues.

He returned in March as hungry as ever and was in breathtaking form as Liverpool crushed Real Madrid and Manchester United in the space of four days.

Gerrard bagged a brace against the La Liga giants in a 4-0 rout, before the Reds silenced Old Trafford with an incredible 4-1 success. Our skipper scored a pressure penalty just before the break to help the club to arguably its best league win in living memory.

Next he took his tally to six in three games by scoring a first Premier League hat-trick against Aston Villa at Anfield.

A brace of goals versus West Ham in early May saw him move beyond St John in the Anfield record books prior to claiming the opening goal against West Brom at The Hawthorns.

Such was his form in 08-09, the legendary Zinedine Zidane described Gerrard as the "best player in the world" - a statement no Kopite will disagree with.

The captain beat Xabi Alonso (35 per cent) into second, followed by Dirk Kuyt (six per cent), Yossi Benayoun (three per cent) and Sami Hyypia (three per cent).

As a Arsenal Fan i have to say i'm Diasappointed with the lack of trophies once again :bawling:.

The game against Chelsea at home the 4-1 brawling was a big Disappointment to me, we lacked a tough midfield General and two proper strong centre backs and a world class finisher.

As a Arsenal fan making a semi- final The Champions league and fa cup for me wasn't good enough, seen as the last cup we won agaisnt Man utd in 2005, it just saddens to me seen that a great club like arsenal strugggling.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/192152-arsenal-transfer-issue-who-should-arsene-wenger-sell

Arsenal Transfer Issue: Who Should Arsene Wenger Sell?

Arsene Wenger is facing a difficult task. He desperately needs to strengthen his squad in order to add something to his trophy cabinet, which has not seen any trophies since 2005. But in order to buy, he is going to need to sell so he can have sufficient funds to add quality players to his side.

So who should depart the Emirates? Here are my thoughts.

1. Emmanuel Adebayor: AC Milan, 25-35 million.

As much as I admire the lanky Togolese striker and am grateful for his scoring prowess in 2007-2008, where he notched an impressive 30 goals, AC Milan have rumoured to be offering 25-35 million. Arsenal can't afford to pass this offer up.

The Togolese international struggled with health and form this season, though he did manage to come second on the Arsenal scoring list with 16. I will be disappointed to see Adebayor leave North London for 2009-2010, but his departure should open the door for the likes of David Villa and Carlos Tevez, and also help fund the midfield department.

2. William Gallas: Unknown, 10-15 million

Though the French center half was impressive this season, I am afraid I can't see Gallas at Arsenal next season. Since coming to Arsenal, the former Chelsea defender has endured drops in form and discipline problems, and early in the season he was stripped of his captaincy.

Selling Gallas will open the door for Brede Hangeland and Thomas Vermaelen. Plus with Johan Djourou and Havard Nordtveit coming in strongly, Gallas would be better off elsewhere.

3. Mikael Silvestre: Anywhere just as long as he is not at Arsenal, any price

The most surprising transfer for Arsenal was none other than former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre. Wenger opted for Silvestre because of his experience, but the transfer backfired as Silvestre was a waste of time. He was either injured or playing poorly.

4. Emmanuel Eboue

I would be devastated to see Eboue depart the Emirates, but his future is still very unclear, and with the likes of Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid very interested in the Ivorian, Arsenal could receive a handy price.

After being booed off by his own fans this season, it's no real surprise to see the Ivorian not that keen to re-sign. Eboue's traditional role is right back, but due to the arrival of Bacary Sagna in 2007, he has been forced to play in the midfield.

5. Amaury Bischoff

Bischoff joined Arsenal from German side Werder Bremen at the start of 2008-2009 but failed to make any impact, playing here and there, mostly in the League Cup. Bischoff has hinted he would like to leave the Gunners, and I wouldn't be surprised if Wenger lets him.

Chelsea Mooting Swoop For Barcelona Striker Eto'o - Report
Manchester City may face competition for Samuel Eto'o as Chelsea are considering making a move...
4 Jun 2009 14:43:54

Chelsea are monitoring Samuel Eto'o's situation after it became clear that Barcelona would consider any realistic offers for their free-scoring striker this summer, according to a report.

The Blues have been linked with several forwards, including Valencia's David Villa, but could now turn their attention to the Cameroonian forward and snag his signature before Manchester City is able to.

Blues' owner Roman Abramovich has recognised that he must spend this summer in order to bolster the squad and support new manager Carlo Ancelotti and a new frontman would go down well, The Independent claims.

Barcelona are set to offer Eto'o a reduced salary as part of a two-year contract extension and the player is set to reject the deal and see which clubs will meet his demands of around €10 million-per-year.

Last summer, coach Pep Guardiola told the former Mallorca striker that he was going to be sold along with Ronaldinho and Deco, but the commitment and drive shown in pre-season by Eto'o meant he was asked to stay.

A season later though, Barca are keen to cash in on his talents before his current deal expires in 2010 and the club believe that the change of personnel will prevent complacency.

Eto'o scored two goals less than Spain's and Europe's top striker Diego Forlan in the season that just finished and has previously stated that he would like to try his luck in England.

Everton eye Neill swoop

Everton, 14:44, June 4, 2009

Everton have entered the race to sign out-of-contract West Ham full-back Lucas Neill, who rejected a new deal with the Hammers.
The 31-year-old ended his association with West Ham when he rejected a reduced-terms contract extension at Upton Park.

Neill is now free to talk to other clubs and Everton boss David Moyes is reportedly keen on the former Blackburn star.

However, Moyes faces a battle to sign the Australian ace as Neill's ex-Blackburn boss Mark Hughes at Manchester City is believed to be interested while Portsmouth are reported to be keen on securing his services.

21. Edin Džeko

Eddy (to his mates) has had a great season, having won the league with VfL Wolfsburg, scoring 34 times in 60 games. The Bosnia and Herzegovina striker has 17 caps scoring 12 goals. (04/06/09)

20. Obafemi Martins

Joey's Nigerian team mate is almost certain to leave the Barcodes. His agent is trying to get his client some good press by saying he has been linked with with Everton, Arsenal and Aston Villa. The 24 year-old scored 28 in 87 games for Inter Milan, before coming to the premier League. He scored 28 in 88 for Newcastle and has netted 13 times in 24 games for his country. (03/06/09)

14. Peter Crouch

A few of today's Sunday rags were reporting that Moyesy may be ready to offer a Merseyside return to ex shite player Peter Crouch. Crouch left the red shite two seasons ago to join Hawwy Wedknapp at Pompey, but since Wedknapp has left for pastures new it is reported that Crouch is unhappy at the level of investment. The 14 foot striker has 33 England Caps to his name, bagging 15 goals along the way. His strike rate is one goal every three matches, even for an ex red shite not too bad. He is said to be on the market for around £5-6m.

8. Niko Kranjar

Everton are looking at Niko. Still only 24 years of age, the Croatian International playmaker fits into Davey Moyes' type of player. He has shown at Portsmouth that he is a top player, who can score goals. He has scored 7 goals in 47 games for Croatia. (07/04/09)

7. Jermaine Jenas

Reports in today's rags tell us that Spurs out of favour midfielder Jermaine Jenas wants away from Laaahnnndan Town this Summer. He also wants European football with a club that is going places, so that means it's the Blues for him then. Villa are also sniffing round the 26yr old midfielder who has had a stop start career at Spurs, Newcastle and Forest. He still has a few England Caps to his name so he can't be all that bad. Prices start around £7m, but like everywhere in the UK at the moment, the sales will start soon. (06/04/09)

5. Michael Owen

Reports, whispers and down right made up stories are afoot about Michael Owen coming to Everton. Talks of him taking a huge pay cut from £120,000 per week to around £50,000 to join the club his Dad played for are rife. With the North East club, who have never won **** all, wanting to sort out their budget for the Championship, Owen is one of the players they could do with getting rid of.

Owen's only outside chance of getting back in the England squad for his last harar in the 2010 World Cup, will be if he is playing in the Premiership regularly and scoring goals. This is were Owen's problem lies. He has done it all. won trophies, England caps, etc. But can he be arsed anymore? His body language in some of the games he played for Newcastle says no. He seems to be more interested in his new love. No not his missus, but his horses. Apparently he can't wait for training to finish to get to the stud farm and snuggle up to one of his fillies.

The Yak and Owen up front at the start of the season may look rosy on paper, but Moyesy needs to make sure the 29 year old still has fire in his belly, otherwise he needs to boot him right back to one of his stables. (04/06/09)

The word on the street is (well County Road) that Michael Owen is desperate to settle back in the North West after his unsuccessful spell at the skunks. With the barcodes in dire straits, and the Championship a distinct possibility for them, Owen is looking for an escape route, and the Blues may hold all the aces.

He is desperate to re start his England career, and would be happy to take a whopping pay cut to do so. The Blues could offer him season in season out European football, which may be to good to turn down for the boyhood Blue. Watch this space as they say, there is some mileage in this one me thinks. (28/03/09)

4. Tom Huddlestone

Tom Huddlestone it seems will be surplus to requirements come the Summer as Hawwy Wedknapp does not seem to fancy him. I fancy that Linda Lusardi one, as she has a massive...................personality, but unfortunately she is now in her 40's and does not play centre mid. Moyesy however has fancied Tom for some time now, and he would be available for around £5-£6m. One to watch. Mmmmm now back to Linda !!

Tom says: I want to fight for my place but I think the last game I played for Tottenham was in the reserves, and I didn't go there to play in the reserves.mSo it's a case of seeing what happens between now and the end of the season. It's difficult to say what the future might hold, maybe the manager will bring in a few new players this summer and he might have to get rid of a few players." (26/03/09)

1. Vagner Love

Moyesy was at Villa Park last night to watch Villa draw in the UEFA Cup with CSKA Moscow. Now its a few weeks away till we play Villa so why was he there. Well it just so happens that good old Vagner scored an absolute beauty against the Midlanders in the said match. Just to please Moyesy as well, Vagner had his dreadlocks in a lovely Royal Blue, people will say its a coincidence, I say coincidence my arse. This may be a runner, well it will be on this site, as he is quality, and I am starting the whip round to buy him.

Just picked the ones i thought u might know....

Just heard from whispers that Valencia is a def. to sign from Wigan as Ferguson has been after him for quite some time now. Berbatov, don't be going anywhere after one season even though he didn't have the best season of his career. . He's staying simply due to the fact that Fergie loves him, worked hard on bringing him over and wants to give him at least another year to adapt. Ronaldo won't be going anywhere just yet due to his contract with Nike and Madrid being an Adidas team. Depending on the Tevez situation which should be resolved in the next few days we will see who Ferguson is interested in. . A few names that continuously pop up are Benzema, Huntelaar and once more Santa Cruz however since Barcelona announced that Eto'o could be up for sale Ferguson has been focusing on him.

Im now telling you that Owen has no chance of coming back to Liverpool. Its a crying shame why he left but that is what greed does to you. Its pointless trying to keep the rumour going, only a backward thinking manager would do that and RAFa is not that. Watch out for Liverpool going for Kevin Davies and Everton trying to scupper the deal. Stevie G is in the papers a lot demanding a big name signing not someone who has "potential" or is "unproven". subtle hint to the boss there. RAFA needs to sign early on in the break to get his men in for the pre season, the last thing he wants is to worry about getting a last minute bargain. But be assured this will happen because RAFA is one hard worker. Theres no excuse now RAF your in control of the transfers mate.

RODGERS JOINS READING FROM WATFORD

SWITCH: Rodgers is taking over at Reading

Thursday June 4,2009
By Julia White for express.co.uk

WATFORD have confirmed that Brendan Rodgers has left to become the new manager of Reading.

The Royals have agreed to pay compensation to their Coca-Cola Championship rivals starting at £500,00 which could rise to as much as £1million.

The 36-year-old only took charge at Vicarage Road in November but has left to rejoin Reading as replacement for Steve Coppell.

Rodgers - who still lives in Reading - spent nine years with the club as academy manager before being headhunted by Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho in 2004 where he worked his way up to reserve team boss.

He left last year to take charge of the Hornets and successfully guided them away from the relegation zone as well as changing the style of play and developing several young players.

However, with budgets at Vicarage Road set to again be slashed for the forthcoming season Rodgers has jumped at the chance to work at the Madejski Stadium again.

Coppell looked set to lead the Royals to promotion from the Championship for much of last season but a spectacular loss of form after January confined them to the play-offs where they lost to eventual winners Burnley.

But with players such as Stephen Hunt, Kevin Doyle and Andre Bikey at his disposal Rodgers will be confident of a return to the Premier League next May.

Not sure how well he will do.
Watford finished 13th in championship league.

Liverpool FC owners lose £42.6m
LFC players celebrate scoring a goal
Liverpool's owners need to refinance their debt this summer

The parent company of Liverpool FC, owned by Tom Hicks and George Gillett, lost £42.6m in the year to August 2008.

The loss was mainly due to the £36m of interest payments that Kop Football Holdings had to make to service the debt taken on to buy the club.

Its auditors warned that the need to refinance loans by 24 July cast "significant doubt" on the future of the group as a going concern.

But they added the club's owners were confident they would secure the funds.

The US owners bought Liverpool in February 2007, promising to build a new stadium.

Player sales

In their accounts, they say they are "committed to building a new stadium and actively seeking funding to complete the project".

But they admit that "the opening of the new stadium will be delayed until 2012".

The parent company's loss came despite the £10.2m pre-tax profit reported by the football club in the same period.

The profit was helped by increased television revenues and the sale of players such as Peter Crouch, John Arne Riise and Scott Carson.

The results for the parent company showed net debt on 31 July 2008 of £300m.

The likelihood Valencia will have to sell stars David Villa and David Silva has increased after the resignation of president Vicente Soriano.

The Spanish giants, who defaulted on paying players last year, are reported to have debts of about £400 million.

"I hung on to Villa and Silva, and one year further on I am sure if my successors want to sell them they will be worth much more than 12 months ago."

Villa and Silva have been linked to Real Madrid, Barcelona and Chelsea.

Everton cant really afford him atm.

I might put some qualifying bets on actually. I haven't done a risky accumulator in a WHILE. A few months ago I nearly won close to £22,000 by betting on a random Hungarian league or something, but 2 out of 16 bets went the wrong way. Purely gutted. I'm a bad better anyway, I don't really understand the numbers and I go on "hunches" rather than knowledge LOL.
