Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke is among seven players to be released by Sunderland.
Joining Yorke, 37, are striker David Connolly, midfielder Arnau Riera, keepers Darren Ward and Nick Colgan and Peter Hartley and Niall McArdle.
Tal Ben Haim and Calum Davenport also leave having completed loan spells.
The Black Cats parted company with striker Djibril Cisse on Monday after deciding not to make his loan move from Marseille permanent.
The clean-out follows Sunderland's last-gasp Premier League survival on Sunday, despite a 3-2 home defeat by Chelsea.
606: DEBATE
We seriously need some new strikers looking at the retained list
BrandoSAFC
The Wearsiders are pressing ahead with their search for a new manager and have seen new owner Ellis Short take complete control, in a busy week for the club.
Yorke, who turns 38 in November, made his final appearance last month against Manchester United.
Connolly, 32, has been plagued by injury and has not played since January 2008.
Former Barcelona 'B' team captain Riera was sent off just three minutes into his first start for the club in August 2006 and has not played since.
Wales international Darren Ward has also struggled for fitness, while Republic of Ireland international Nick Colgan failed to make an appearance for the first team.
Defender Peter Hartley has moved to his home town team of Hartlepool, while Davenport returns to West Ham and Ben Haim to Manchester City.

Liverpool reserve team manager Gary Ablett is set to leave the club as boss Rafael Benitez continues a reshuffle of his backroom staff.
The former Liverpool and Everton defender won the reserve league in 2008 but leaves after three years in charge.
Anfield hero Kenny Dalglish has been tipped for an advisory role at the club while Gary McAllister is also believed to be lined up for a coaching position.
Frank McParland has already been recruited as the new academy director.
Spanish coach Pep Segura has also been brought in as academy technical manager as part of the overhaul, replacing Piet Hamberg.
606: DEBATE
Wish him all the best in the future. He did a good job bringing the reserves on
add name here
Ablett, who played over 100 games for Liverpool, will leave the club after taking a young side to compete in the International Cor Groenewegen tournament in Holland at the weekend.
Benitez is also believed to be planning further coaching changes with Hugh McAuley (under-18s), Dave Shannon (under-16s) and Paul Lever (under-14s) likely to be casualties of the changes.
John McMahon, brother of former Liverpool star Steve, could also be considered for a role at the club. He is currently assistant manager at Shrewsbury and has coached at Tranmere.

A Manchester United fan in Nigeria has allegedly killed four people when he drove into a crowd of Barcelona supporters after his team's Champions League defeat. Skip related content
Police said the crowd in the town of Ogbo were celebrating Barcelona's victory when the minibus drove into them.
A police spokeswoman said ten people were injured and the driver was arrested.
She said: "The driver had passed the crowd then made a U-turn and ran into them."
Barcelona beat Manchester United 2-0 in what has been hailed as a "dream final" between two of Europe's best clubs.
Both teams have large fan bases in Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation.

Barry could be coming to Arsenal
Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry wants a move to Arsenal.
The Daily Star says Barry is desperate to play Champions League football during the best years of his career – and the Gunners are his No.1 option.
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is still an admirer, but is not keen on splashing out most of his transfer budget taking him to Anfield. That has left Manchester City and Tottenham hopeful of securing a deal – but it is Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger who is considering a £12m bid for the 28-year-old.
Wenger is searching for a dominant midfield player to add to a squad which has plenty of talent but lacks genuine bite, and he has watched Barry several times in the past few months.

Arsenal, West ham and Everton are the only teams to have more injuries than Man Utd
So on that basis Man utd would have done better and you still wouldnt have won.
And Arsenal would be challenging the title if we didnt have injured players we would be much higher majority of our first team have been injured this season.
The season ended how it did injuries or not, thats no excuse to have for not winning the title as every team can use the same excuse.
And if Liverpool were the be all and end all that liverpool fans think, wouldnt they have better people to fill the injuries of torres and gerrard, n gog and babel... lol
Liverpool fans are deluded
they think they should be as good as how they were in the 80's but it will never happen

Babel didn't fill in for Gerrard, Benayoun did.... and you saw yourself how good he played. But we didn't have a striker who could score many goals.
Utd's injuries didn't matter, they have quality players in their reserves never mind on the bench. And it was only to players like Wes Brown and Neville anyway, they're only on the fringe of the first team now.

The U.S. national team wanted hot and steamy conditions to prepare for Wednesday's World Cup qualifier at Costa Rica, and they certainly got their wish during a five-day Miami training camp that concludes Sunday morning.
''Wow -- it's like a sauna here,'' defender Oguchi Onyewu said. ``I can't imagine it will be any more uncomfortable there.''
The team heads to Costa Rica on Monday after a final closed practice at FIU on Sunday morning. Although they sit in first place in the region in World Cup qualifying, coach Bob Bradley and his players are expecting a daunting task.
For one thing, many of the key U.S. players were unable to participate in the camp because they were playing for their clubs until this weekend. Only 12 of the 24 players practiced together.
Saprissa Stadium is one of the more difficult places to play in the Americas because hostile fans are very close to the field, and they have been known to throw everything from batteries to cups of urine. The United States is 0-5-1 there in World Cup qualifying matches.
''Costa Rica has had great success at Saprissa Stadium. It's loud,'' Bradley said. ``They are very comfortable there. They have great confidence there. And certainly we are aware that we have never won there. So when we look at different challenges, talk about things that we still want to achieve, this is a good example.''
Said Onyewu: ``It's wild at that stadium. Most people don't realize how difficult it is for us to qualify for the World Cup. They think it's a breeze because we're a bigger country, but it's never easy to play in places like Costa Rica. We go through a lot, the fans are totally against us, and the weather conditions are usually very hot and humid.''

The first will be offering a swap plus cash deal. It will consist of sending Samuel Eto'o to the San Siro and adding a further €20m into Moratti's account. This is an option which could convince the Nerazzurri as Eto'o has been in hot form this term, helping his side lift the European Cup - a trophy that Inter have been craving for over 40 years.

Mourinho enters running for Arsenal's midfield target

Inter Milan have joined Arsenal in the chase for Barcelona’s Yaya Toure.
Arsene Wenger sees Kolo’s brother as the ideal man to bolster his midfield ahead of the new season, and is reportedly planning an offer in the region of £14million to land the player.
However, reports in Italy suggest Jose Mourinho is also keen on the 26-year-old, who he feels would be an ideal to his side as he looks to make a bid for UEFA Champions League glory next term.
Despite this interest and the uncertain future surrounding Toure’s future earlier this season, though, the latest from Spain is that Barca are no longer looking to offload the player.
The former Olympiakos and Monaco star has been an ever-present in Pep Guardiola’s side since Christmas, helping the Camp Nou side to La Liga, Spanish Cup and Champions League glory.

"This beautiful adventure at Milan is over.
"I can't say anything else official.
"I have not made any agreement with any other club. I am certainly not staying in Italy."

Lavezzi agent reveals Liverpool move close
31.05.09 | tribalfootball.com
The agent of Napoli star Ezequiel Lavezzi has hinted a move to Liverpool is on for the Argentine whiz.
“Whether he stays or not depends entirely on Napoli, but I think the club wants to sell him,” said agent Alejandro Mazzoni on Radio Kiss Kiss.
“Napoli did not keep their promises. I have been waiting for a call from (sports director) Pierpaolo Marino since Sunday so we can have a meeting with the President, so it is difficult for us to know what the club wants.
“I want to tell the fans that I have always been ready to come when the director calls and last time we spoke I told him of an important offer from a foreign club.
“The President has not replied, not even when Pocho himself called. I am not an authorised FIFA agent and I cannot talk about this, but what I can say is there was a genuine offer and Marino turned it down.”
He added: “Now there is an important offer on the table for both the player and the club, now I get the feeling Napoli want to sell him.
“I wish to point out that Napoli are very important for Lavezzi, but we are talking about an English club that plays in the Champions League who are offering to treble his wages.
“Football players are not slaves, they are people, and you can buy his contract but not his will.”

More transfer cash if Liverpool refinancing deal goes ahead
01.06.09 | Ian Ferris
Liverpool owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett are hopeful of landing a £350million refinancing deal.
Sunday Mirror Sport reveals that accountants from the Royal Bank of Scotland and Wells Fargo are currently examining Liverpool's financial figures with a view to agreeing a loan package that will ease the pressure on the two Americans.
The move could also bring an improved summer transfer budget for manager Rafa Benitez.
The deal will hinge on Hicks and Gillett pouring more of their own personal finance into Anfield - and the pair are looking to raise funds by selling off some of their other sporting interests in the United States.

The only thing that has kept us from winning the premiership under Rafa is his rotation, he stopped that this season and we done the best we have for a long time- and our two best players only played together about 15 times. If we strengthen out squad next season and don't keep rotating, we will be there or there about at the end of the season. Especially if Utd lost any of: Ronaldo, Tevez, Berbatov, Rooney.
