Let's get real here,it's true,a lot of people don't budget wisely, not all,but some, some people who use food banks have all the luxuries in life except food ? Are we supposed to believe that when they have smartphones, video consoles TVs,they smoke ,and drink you can get food if you shop wisely and stop all the takeaways ,food banks should be for the really needy, not for the lazy sods who can't be bothered to shop around or even shop . This post will be met with some distain but it's true .

It will be met with disdain because its utter rot, Kazanne. Of course there are always people who will abuse a system but it is a TINY percentage and the judgemental "well they have x, y, z" comments are just nonsense.

Phones are not a luxury item in 2019,they are an essential. They are the cheapest way to access the Internet and having Internet / email is needed for benefits, jobseeking, all sorts of basics. Also suggesting that people - often people with kids - shouldn't have a TV or games console is just nonsense. They are basically the CHEAPEST form of entertainment for people who can't afford things like classes, theatre, cinema etc. so are they meant to just stare at the walls? When their lives are already miserable?

As for alcohol and tobacco, again, these are things people are hooked on because they are poor and unhappy. It's so short-sighted to say they should just stop and use the money for food .

The only thing I could just about get on board with is takeaways... They can be a huge money-sink even for those of us who can afford them... But honestly, I highly doubt many people using food banks are having a weekly Domino's on the side.

you can't just turn up at a food bank and say give us some food either.

It's an essential service to prevent people starving, it shouldn't be criticised in any way shape or form until the underlying problems are addressed.

I would imagine more people will have to rely on food banks after Brexit. I think everyone, whichever side of the debate you're on, knows there will be a period of massive economic uncertainty afterwards and more families will be pushed into poverty. Scary times ahead and I cannot bring myself to pour any scorn on people in hardship. I don't care what they have or don't have, not being able to feed your children must be awful. Thank god for food banks et al

No one has criticised its basic function,I said it should be for the very needy but I know myself its been abused by people who really don't need it, you may not like that but that's what Ive seen , one person or a hundred doing that is wrong, imo. plus I know someone who went up our local food bank and got food with no bother at all. popped it in her trolley then popped to Costa for a coffee. It needs vetting better .

It’s not easy to abuse a food bank, my parents went through a really tough time a while back and had to rely on a good bank a few times and it was a tough process to prove you needed to use the services, they don’t just hand out bags of produce to anyone that asks and the notion that they do is an outright lie and sets a very dangerous preceden, imho obviously.

...both of those comments are right up there with Reece-Mogg’s ‘common sense’ comment about the victims of Grenfell...it’s becoming more and more obvious what this present government feel about the most vulnerable in society..and one of the most sad things is that these comments are becoming so open and frequent because the vulnerable have been de-humanised so much over recent years...

They have I agree Ammi, all that 'poverty porn' a few years ago they were relentless on every channel. With strange cut aways to trainers, big tvs and such they were specifically designed to instil division.

But how do people with very little afford such things? They are like anyone targetted by advertising in the form of 'affordable loans', remember wonga? They were the trailblazers of unsecured personal loans, charging up to 4000% interest! Loan sharks don't charge that much! then came Brighthouse for all that must have tech with similar charges. Now there's quickquid and petfect home who operate in the same principle but have to be more open as to the real cost if 'low cost' loans.

it's worked a treat! Just look at how they are being framed now, once again the demonisation has begun. Saddled with years worth of debt on top of changes brought in with universal credit and the 2 child limit on working tax credit the only option for many is the food bank. ... and what's being blamed as the cause? Budgeting! It is budgeting all these debts that created the problem in the first place, and the solution? ... more payday loans, more debt in an endless cycle.

This is the poverty trap, how do you get out of poverty? Get a secure job that pays a living wage, not a zero hr agency job and have affordable childcare available. The politics of division have to end.

i think we all need to wake up to the fact that the world isn't the same as it was even a mere 3 or 4 years ago. The reason politicians are voicing the things they do is because people do, they are reflecting the voices of people in the UK.

If Boris wins on Thursday, people will have democratically elected him. We live in a polarised world with no sensible middle ground any more. Any outcome on Friday will be a nightmare for me whether it be one party with a good majority or a hung parliament.

I have a feeling Labour will get in and IF they do they better deliver what they have promised and would probably do better to change their leader, but they will probably do what they always do spend, spend, spend, get us almost bankrupt again and leave it for the Tories to clean up yet again,so they (the Tories)then get blamed for trying to cut corners to get us back on track, and so it goes on.

Austerity is an ideological spending plan. Of course it can be ended quickly. I do enjoy the way you say that you hate everyone then only criticise labour. That's your right, of course, but from what you write, there's only one outcome that will be a nightmare for you.

Kaz this is false. The tories have exploded the debt, not labour. The tories haven't cleaned up anything. It's the tories that have been spend, spend, spending, just not on stuff to actually benefit the people.

And what are they reflecting? Are they reflecting the things they projected on to them in the first instance?...

Nobody wakes up one day and says ' those lazy disabled people lolling about all day'... there has been a protracted drip feeding of disinformation on many groups, lone parents, the homeless, addicts, the poor in general and many many more.
The lack of empathy for these groups is not by accident, it's by design.

Even if Labour only manage to do half the things they’ve promised by the end of a term, we’ll still be in a much better place than we are now under the Tories.

Tories have skyrocketed the national debt and what have we got to show for it? Vital services cut, budgets for local councils drastically cut, school fundings cut, the top 5% have been allowed to double their wealth while millions of people have been pushed into poverty at the other end, they’ve had 10 years to make a difference and they’ve done nothing of the sort, they’ve got one thing right, Britain does deserve better.

Yes they did, it's the kind of note that exiting parties have left for each other going back decades. The only issue, is that labour were too trusting and maybe naive to believe the tories wouldn't carry it around politicising it for 6 years.

Would you be interested in seeing the actual debt figures going back from the last labour government to now?

When they come to write the history books, and write about when it all began to turn around.

When your children or grandchildren ask you:

“What did you do to end that world of rough sleeping and food banks?

“What did you do to save the NHS and stop the Tories selling it off?”

“What did you do to bring back pride to our town?

“And to finally wrestle back control from those who had kept it to themselves for so long?”

You can tell them:

“It all began when we voted*Labour, when together we laid the foundations of that new society, foundations so deeply rooted that no Tory could ever tear them up.”

You can tell them:

“It was when we proved, once and for all, that the doubters were wrong. That the doubters are always wrong: another world really *is* possible.”

OR... you could tell them you did nothing.

But is the quality of fries worth the drop off in burger quality compared to BK? Even though KFC fries are rank, is the fact that there is no better condiment in fast food, than the KFC gravy enough to make up for it?

This is one of the greatest dilemmas of the modern age IMO. KFC gravy is amazing, chips dipped in gravy are amazing, KFC chips are terrible, thus KFC chips dipped in KFC gravy are only "passable" D:. It's so wrong.

Does anyone remember the brief period of less than a year when KFC's chips were thin and crispy like McDonalds chips? Actually better. Bliss! WHY would they change them back??

Being fair; he may only have been to one or two KFC's. My local does a great gravy, and there's one along one of our regular road-trip routes that does an EXCEPTIONAL gravy (we joke that they need to promote their gravy-chef and send them off around the country, teaching staff their ways)... but I have also been to one or two where it's been watery and bland :(. I'm not sure why it's not jus "standard" but it definitely has variations from outlet to outlet.

The 11-minute damnation of Jeremy Corbyn in full

Jon Ashworth shredded Labour's leadership and election chances in an 11-minute conversation with a Tory friend that appears to have been recorded last week. Here is the full transcript:

John Ashworth: ...are all like, 'oh my god, this is going to be the same as 2017, Theresa May, Look what's happening, look what's happening'.

For what it is worth, I think my Labour colleagues are more correct than my Tory friends on this.

Tory: What sort of proportion of them think Labour is going to get smashed?

JA: Anyone in the Midlands … anyone outside of the city seats, if you are in small-town Midlands and North, it's abysmal out there.

They don't like Johnson but they can't stand Corbyn and they think Labour's blocked Brexit.

I don't think they are long-term gains for the Tory Party but I can well see them going Tory this election and if Labour ever got its act together they presumably would fall back, do you know what I mean?

Tory: Yeah

JA: But on the other end of the scale I think middle-class graduates – remainy people – Labour's probably doing well among - and the Lib dems are doing well - but not in big enough numbers to deny the Tories a majority.

Tory: You are obviously just speaking [unintelligible], but I'm reasonably confident and certainly optimistic that the Tories will be a majority.

But I just think that if Corbyn became prime minister, and if it is any sort of … basically if the Tories got anything less than 350 I don't see how he can't be prime minister - even if just for a short while.

I just think the cost would be so - within the first 24 hours Sterling goes down from a minute past 10 on the exit poll on the Thursday, stock markets crash, or at least any company that is renationalised or supplies companies that get nationalised loses a ton of value first thing in the morning, all Five Eyes guys start making noises about pulling back in the morning. That is before he has even got his seals of office.

I don't think it is likely, I think it's like a 10 per cent chance, maybe more, of having a workable administration. But the cost is - we have talked about this before, he's just not up to it. What I said before about having tickets booked on Eurostar for 2250 that night if he comes in, I'm quite serious. We are trying to work out what we could put in the suitcase to get out the county, because you know capital controls come in.

JA: I just can't see it happening. It wouldn't surprise me, for the sake of argument, that if Labour held somewhere like Canterbury, because of middle class Guardian-reading people, but then the Tories take Bolsover off Labour, it wouldn't surprise me at all. Because the electoral map is being very topsy-turvy because of Brexit and because of Corbyn.

The question is for Labour, it is gets itself a half-decent leader next time round, whether it can reverse and regain its traditional heartland seats. I just can't see how you don't have a majority, to be honest.

Tory: I think if Labour had a half decent leader two years ago you'd be 40 points ahead. But is there any reassurance you can give me as to what would sensible Labour MPs do to stop Corbyn actually getting the seals of office? Is there anything that would happen or is it just...

JA: God knows … because we *******ed it up. We *******ed it up in 2016 when we went too early. People like me were internally saying this isn't the right moment, but I got ignored.

We went too early, so now I'm afraid … but I don't think we are going to get there, I just can't see it.

In places like Mansfield and Ashfield, it's dire for the Labour Party up there, these traditional areas

Tory: What happens if, say tomorrow, Trump says something ludicrous, there is a big swing in the polls and Tuesday next week, Labour is two points up? What would you do? Ride it out?

JA: Yeah, but I don't think we are going to get there. I just can't see it.

It's not going to happen. Stop worrying, it's not going to happen!

Tory: If you got in [inaudible]...

JA: Ummm. I don't know. On the security stuff I have worked in Number 10 I think the machine will pretty quickly move to safeguard security things, the civil service machine.

Tory: They wouldn't let him see stuff?

JA: You know, it is not going to happen. I just cannot see it happening. I just cannot see it happening. Not the way things are going at the moment.

Tory: I know what you mean and I appreciate the point about Canterbury being a bit different. Canterbury is kind of turning into Islington on Sea because of all the people coming down from London. That is just demographic change.

JA: Yeah, yeah.

Tory: It becomes a slightly harder fight for us over a couple of generations. I think it will be tight this time though. I think probably it will be 500 either way. But yeah, as much as I'd love to see [inaudible] from our perspective, I am more worried about the national picture.

JA: I have been going round these national places. It is dire for Labour. It is dire. Our strategy is just to try and help as many of my colleagues back over the line banging on about the NHS in their areas for them. It is awful for them and it is the combination of Corbyn and Brexit.

Tory: Do you think any of your more moderate colleagues would switch parties or anything?

JA: I think the ones who are gonna do that have already gone. It is not going to happen. I just cannot see it happening. I just cannot see it. Not on the things I am finding and what I am picking up. Johnson and CCHQ would have to massively ******* it up in the last week.

Tory: Yeah I know.

JA: That might not reassure you. [both men laugh]

Tory: 2017, I remember being up in [inaudible] and for the first couple of weeks of the campaign it actually looked like you might win. The Tories put out the manifesto and then there was the Manchester attack so basically the news clamped down for three days. The guy I was helping had done a local poll just before and just after that happened and he went from seven points up to seven points down over three days. Obviously those are incredibly rare events but, I don't know, apart from Trump, there's all the things you can't imagine like the delay in distribution of school flu vaccines or whatever it is on your beat - you must be aware of half a dozen things that could flare up and that is the same in every department.

JA: Oh, yeah, yeah.

Tory: I just really dread the, some of the polls now are down to six or seven points and because of the way the seats fall and the majorities fall they need to be seven or eight to get a majority of one really. I expect the Tories to get a majority but I would sleep easier if you could either reassure me on Corbyn not being able to get in or even that he is not going to be as bad. I mean the markets would go and stuff, wouldn't they?

JA: I don't know what they would do. I just don't think it is going to happen. What I am picking up I can't see it happening because by this point last time I remember it, the sort of things that normal people were saying is, or basically some version of it, was 'isn't that Theresa May useless' - some version of that.

What they are saying now is some version of… they say he is a liar, that definitely comes up, the idea that he doesn't tell the truth seems to have struck a chord but they also say some version of 'he will get this bloody Brexit done, I am sick of Brexit, he will get it done'.

Some version of that and it is a combination of those who want Brexit, the Leavers, but then it is the others who probably voted to Remain or maybe weren't that bothered that are now just sick to death of it and want it put away and they think that he will be the person who will just get it done. Do you know what I mean?

Tory: If it works out alright and I assume we both hope and there is some sort of workable majority for Johnson, how long do you reckon it will take Labour to get its act back together and get rid of Corbyn? We talked about this before, haven't we? Obviously things work better if you have got two decent parties trying to make each other up their games. At the moment you guys are just all over the *******ing place.

JA: I know. I know. Well that is the thing that a lot of us are… It is on our minds.

Tory: How long do you reckon it will take to switch it round. Is he irremovable now because of the NEC and stuff or what?

JA: I think things can change quickly. I think things change more quickly generally now… I think things are more fluid. Anyway. Maybe that is a conversation for another day.

The public are idiots that deserve what they get and when they allow the NHS to die, they'll be the ones to suffer the insurance hell that the US is afflicted with because I won't stick around to suffer for the public's incompetence.

It was always agenda-driven, biased drivel and obviously propaganda but this is pure, undisguised propaganda?? It's not just dystopian nonsense... it reads like a PARODY of dystopian nonsense .

Brexit is going on for at least 6/7 years, and this paper knows this. I find it really difficult to understand why normal folks would see billionaires overwhelmingly support 1 candidate and not have any questions.

Steve's right, let's face it, Boris Johnson could **** on a Veteran's face while mugging an old lady in front of a camera and people would still vote Tory automatically.

The Tory party's a run by a man who has been sacked multiple times for lying yet their voters are believing him without question now. 'Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times? I must be a Tory voter.'

Things are getting worse and worse and people choose to vote for the party that's making it worse in hopes they can make it better. Stupidity like that is the reason why my faith in the public is dead.

Also, may I add that this is so weird that elections take place on a week day.
This is so weird to me because in France we always vote on Sunday, and by that everybody is free to go vote (I usually go at 8am when it opens so I don't have to deal with my neighbours watching me pick the paper I will put in the enveloppe and judging me for it, they're so corny and curious). It's election day, so you dress up nice (well, not the times I go vote while still hangover from the night before, or going to vote directly from my hookup's place looking like a mess), and enjoy a nice rotisserie chicken and a bottle of wine (so French). And you patiently wait until 8pm to get the results. But maybe us French are weird for that too:joker:

I imagine you guys might have some free time from work to go vote or something? Or like, do you do it at lunch or after work? So weird.
