Sylvie's outbursts to people is Letitia Dean walking past SOC's office and wanting justice for Sam and Rita.

They should make a poll for each episode before hand where we get to choose who she offends each episode.

She had impact. Her introduction finally gave us the backstory on the rest of the Carter's and explained the baby stuff with Babe and Shirley.

He dropped the ball once she came to the Square full time by not really exploring how hard it is to care for her all that much.

But let's not pretend SOC did any different. He used her once for Babe's exit episode then has only been using her the last 4 weeks when Shirley decided she'd had enough and would rather be in prison and then the build up to her death tonight.

The difference being Ashley was a long-term main character who we saw go from his diagnosis right through the illness to his death.

Sylvie was already completely in the throes of the illness when we first met her and was a recurring guest character forbthe majority of her time in the show.

The aims of either character were completely different.

Doubt it. The Carter's have been trimmed down. If SOC didn't want her he'd have wiped her out with Babe and Lee. And now apparently they have big plans for her for the first time since the Tosh story.

I think she's safe until the next producer comes in at least.

I liked Sylvie's character.

It's a shame they gave her dementia as it never actually gave us the insight into the Carter back story we needed. We have Shirley and Stan's side of events so it would have been interesting to get Sylvie's as well if she was of sound mind.

That said, I think the dementia story allowed us to see lots of sides to the character from over their years of life that we don't usually get to see when an elderly character comes into a show.

Don't producers between soaps often discuss storylines they're planning on doing so that they don't clash? Perhaps they couldn't bring Sylvie's dementia storyline to the forefront because of Ashley's storyline was the forefront of Emmerdale.

I'm not sure how it works, but I know it does often happen.

Cal.

I'm shocked that they do story consultations between the soaps. Sometimes I swear story lines collide in different soaps.

I can remember Hollyoaks brought Mercedes back from the dead in the same week EastEnders brought Kathy back from the dead.

Hollyoaks launched their 'Who Killed Amy Barnes?' story line the same time as Corrie did 'Who pushed Ken Barlow?'

She had her lucid moments like a lot of people with the illness do. Given her treatment of her kids she seemed like quite a force to be reckoned with.

Given they never really did much beyond the Babe abuse stuff with her illness I would've liked to see her without dementia and coming to wreak havoc on the family.

Secret children story lines are always shocking and seem like a good plot at the time but they always leave a stain on characters afterwards I think.

I've always thought Kat being Zoe's mum has somewhat held the character back at some points on the show - although it was an incredible story line when I watched it on YouTube and way out of Shirley being Mick's mum's league.

Her maternity story line will be her exit story line I think.

The only secret child plot I've liked that I've actually seen play out is Danielle being Ronnie's daughter. All the others just seem to be plots they can make for a 'WOW OMG' moment rather than actually progressing the characters. See: Stella being Leanne's mum in CS, Sandy being Darren's mum in HO.

I completely agree Jessie was fantastic. I mean character wise the fact Kat has a daughter out there who she doesn't see and doesn't really have closure with it because they have a strained relationship (I know they tried to bring closure to it when Zoe left but they've undone it all since with remarks made by Kat on screen despite them having Kat visit her off screen) kind of has strained her character in her second stint. I don't know how to explain it and this post is really rambled but I don't know how to properly convey what I mean.

I think it is more because the actress has refused to return and no producer dare recast her so the only way they can get around Kat not seeing her daughter is to create tension

Not really. They never had to create tension between Pauline and Michelle for all those years or between Kathy and Ian before she was killed off originally.

They just lived abroad and still had a good relationship. Gives a nice easy excuse for the actors taking breaks when they're visiting family off screen, like Shirley did when she repaired her relationship with her daughter Carly.

Kat and Zoe's relationship being fractured damaged the ending to their story in 2005, added nothing to Kat's second stint from 2010 and was just all round pointless.

The 76-year-old Welsh actor, who was vet James Herriot in the series, will play Ted Murray in the BBC soap.

Screen and stage actress Maggie Steed, 70, will play his wife Joyce.

The Murrays have been married for nearly 60 years and are being rehoused from a nearby estate. EastEnders bosses say it’s not long before their past catches up with them.

That's because while the 32-year-old actress insists she'd turn down the chance to reprise the role, she'd be well up for the character to undergo one of those fabled soap recastings.
