Genocyber

Not so much a movie as an OVA miniseries, but I watched them all in one go. Me and this anime go back a long way... sort of a childhood favourite.

If you like over-the-top violence, you'll adore this. Sadly the final two chapters were patchy compared to the rest, exacerbated, no doubt, by a considerably bad (I'm talking Resident Evil bad) English dub.

Would still cheerfully recommend to anybody who can get their hands on it though.

Recently started getting into films. That sounds like a really weird statement, but I've never really been big on them until this easter. Anyway, recent films I've seen:

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus - I loved this and I'm not sure why. I loved the crazyness, the definable characters, the way they used the different actors due to Heath Ledgers death mid-production. Only thing I wasn't big on was some of the scripting felt a bit forced at times.

Up - I liked this but not as in love with it as everyone else seems to be. The Score was the best part for me (Michael Giachinno is a God) but it was in my opinion still a very good cutesy film.

Star Trek (2009) - I knew nothing about star trek before I started watching this and now I really want to start watching and dare I say it become a trekkie! Again, Michael Giachinno love. <3

Avatar - I found it kind of starts off slow and I couldn't really get behind the main protagonist which was an issue for me, but I eventually got into it. I thought some of the characters were really underutilized, like Grace and her passion for the discoveries and Trudy's real thoughts on what man were doing. Her sudden "screw this" attitude kind of came out of the blue. It wasn't bad though, I just found it slow in places.

Shaun
16-04-2011, 12:28 AM
omg yeah james becoming a Trekkie will do wonders. yea\ but about time re: you and getting into movies

Mine was The Blind Side. I did love it, but I'm not sure if it was really worth a best actress Oscar. But I guess it ticked all of the right boxes to secure one - true story, triumph over adversity, racism, American Dream...

Scream 4! Amazing film, almost as original as... well, the original lol. I think critics only dislike it cos of the number of cut scenes meaning a lot of the characters are under-used and so their deaths are almost as unsympathetic as Scream 3's. Brilliant story and twists though. I want me a Scream 5 already

:o Any good? Sounds Intresting.

Anyway been ill this weekend so saw about 10 films this weekend.

Winters Bone - Didnt mind it, felt bad for the main character. Slow at times.

Detterrence - A film that pre dates the iraq and middle world wars, and knew it was going to happen. It was okay, the endings twist saved the film.

Wishmaster 3 - My favourite out of the whole series, really enjoyed the charcaters, and the cat and mouse chase fell to it.

Wishamaster 4 - Not that bad, however focused more on love then horror and death.

Playing God - Suprisely really good action film. Timothy hutton was great as always, while unfortunally his girlfriend on screen (and at the time of filming) Angellina Jolie survuves being shot in the film, so were stuck were her gormless face :(

Raging Bull - It was okay, maybe my expectations were high for it. De Nero was great Though.

City of Industry - Not a bad revenge movie.

Old Boy - Again not a bad revenge movie, however the editing was wired and sometimes confusiing.

Class Action - Really enjoyable film focusing on a father and daughter in their court lifestyle and their personal troubles and overcoming them when the mother/wife suddenly dies.

Piranha - Really fun cheesy horror flick. Acting is so bad its good, and some of the one liners make this a good film.

Con Air - Not my favourite, Im not a Cage fan so, didnt mind it, but didnt love it either.

I checked out someones list of fave horrors, and I had enjoyed about half the films in their top ten (ones such as 30 Days of Night and All the Boys Love Mandy Lane), so I presumed I'd like the rest.

So without reading a review or finding out what it was about, I downloaded it and it was a bit disturbing, the characters and creepy elements were believable.

Omg was amazing, i was so not disappointed, defo better than the 2nd and 3rd one, the opening was hilarious :L and just amazing and unique in every way, the ending was brilliant, probably the best 3rd act out of the whole franchise, Neve was brilliant in this yet again and suprisingly Emma Roberts was very good too, the movie was never boring, the highlight for me was the ending so good, the opening was brill too though Brittany Robertsons role shouldnt have been cut down and she should have had an on-screen death I liked Alison Bries character, the most underrated character in the movie :joker: my only fault was what i said above and the movie had some un-called for humour at points but i still would give the movie a...

Belle de Jour (1967)

Golden Lion winner from that year's Venice Film Festival with Catherine Deneuve's most iconic role. I like Luis Bunuel too and I had been waiting for a long time to see this so my expectations were high. Almost impossibly high. A bit of a disappointment then on that front. My main complaint is that it simply lacks the shock value it had back in its time.

That aside, still a pretty good movie with some very complex characters, not least among them the lead heroine, a respectable middle-class married woman who adopts a pseudonym (the title of the movie) as she turns to a secret life of upmarket prostitution in hope she can re-inject some passion into her frigid marriage. There are a number of striking ideas, archetypes and images here that won't be unfamiliar to fans of David Lynch's Blue Velvet. It's very apparent that Lynch (a surrealist, like Bunuel) must have been a fan of this movie.

Insidius.. I screamed like a baby.

a review I found of it.

I went into this movie confident that it would be a cheesy, campy romp with the same "tried and true tricks of the trade," like when the hero is investigating the creepy music coming from the basement and a cat jumps into frame, but I quickly discovered that this would not be case with Insidious. After watching the move and obsessing on it for about 12 hours now, I can honestly say it's one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. In fact, there were several points during the film where I screamed like a 13-year old girl at a Justin Beiber concert. Keep in mind I was consciously trying my hardest to keep my composure, mainly because I was sitting beside my new girlfriend of 2 months. She, incidentally, didn't make a peep; thankfully, I later found out she had her eyes closed the whole time.

I was also expecting to see some blood and guts, especially coming from the guys who made Saw, but there wasn't a drop. Instead, they used just about everything else in their arsenal to scare the bejesus out of me and everyone else in the theater (my girlfriend included). From literally the opening credits, they created an intense, haunting tension that didn't leave my body till several whiskeys and half a Xanax later. And the movie constantly feeds that tension, making even the characters' mundane family life somehow seem utterly terrifying. I was actually exhausted leaving the theater from all of the uncomfortable squirming I was unable to control. I'd say it's the most calories I've ever burned while watching a movie (well, at least a PG-13 movie).

Overall, the movie was great. It was crazy scary, thoroughly entertaining, and even surprisingly funny at times. Having said that, it will be quite some time before I watch another horror movie; I have no desire to be turned into a frazzled bundle of nerves again anytime soon. So, if you plan on seeing this movie, please consider this a cautionary reminder: it's probably best to go with someone who's already witnessed you have a complete physical and mental breakdown, so as to avoid an embarrassing drive home. And maybe bring a Xanax as well.

It was good. A lot of killing sprees! I think what it missed out on was the "tension" part of the killings. There wasn't too much tension. Kirby was a good character. She was hot.

It seems anyone can just be stabbed and then brought to life again.. lol like Sidney.

I do hope there is a Scream 5 and 6 though! They will have to start winding it down soon. You know.. the 3 originals being killed off. Maybe them turning against each other? Or not.. they are all 3 likeable characters. Be weird for one of them to suddenly be a killer.

Hanna, it was lacking something, but i don't know what. Could have been a lot better, but it was still likable.

The ending I was spoiled on but I just love the atmosphere this movie has. It's perfect late night viewing and the acting great (don't normally like DiCaprio). Very well made.

The Men Who Stare at Goats

Very funny film, although I don't think it was sure whether it wanted to be a drama, comedy, parody or political film. Pretty good cast and performances though.

Equilibrium - 7.9/10

Great action, good storyline, nice casting. But it feels like there is something missing at the end of the film, it should be a few minutes longer and we should get to see what happens after the events of the last 10-15 minutes. Christian Bale is amazing in it though, don't think anyone else would have carried the role.
