The Machinist. Very clever and weird film.

Watched American Beauty last night, I haven't watched it for years and forgot what a great film it is. It's probably one of my all time favourites. Mind you I say that about most Kevin Spacey movies lol

Fact based so I'd always be interested. I liked the story behind it. The facts. And I liked Billy Connelly. But I'd give it a 6/10

Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone.
First hour drags quite a bit but it starts to pick up around the time of the quidditch/troll. The showdown at the end is a let down. And the only characters I really liked were Snape, Hermoine and Hagrid.

yeah me too, I screamed at one point lol, had to sit on Gavs lap in the armchair watching it (I'm such a wimp!) But we got it from my sister-in-law who got it in Spain, from those people that walk around selling dodgy stuff, the sound wasn't great and the picture went weird sometimes so it ruined it a bit

Yeah bad copies do ruin it a bit, its the first movie for a while that's actually made me jump, I love horrors but most aren't the slightest bit scary anymore.

The Fighter.
Second time I've seen it, first time was in the pictures when it first came out. Amazing film, definitely one of my favourites. I can't believe how well Bale and Wahlberg captured the characters they were playing (it's a true story- it shows a clip of the real people at the end and they are the EXACT same as they are portrayed). IMO Bale should have won the Oscar for American Psycho, but I'm glad he finally won it this time around and definitely a deserving win. I can't remember if Wahlberg was nominated or not, but if not he should have been.
A 10/10 for me an it's not very often I give them.

Christian Bale is an ex boxer who is now a junkie, Wahlberg is his younger brother who is an up and coming boxer, Bale is his trainer but because he is a smackhead he is always messing everything up and eventually goes to jail. While he's in jail plenty of things happen. Trailer:

Just watched The Fighter Bale and Wahlberg's acting is by a distance the highlight of the entire Movie. Pretty typical ending but i guess they coudn't really do it any other way if they are basing it on the true story of Micky Ward some pretty annoying characters in the movie as well though like the Mum and all the sisters they could have got at least one good looking one surely :joker: Great movie though i would rate it around 9 or 9.5

Here's a couple of issues I had with Source Code :
1 - What happened to Brians mind if Colter's (Jake) stayed in his body?
2 - How could he see Godwin and that guy with the crutches when he was unconscious in that pod thing?
3 - What happened when he changed the past, to the world that was happening?
4 - If Godwin turned off his life support, shouldn't he have died and Brian return to his own body?
I'm sure there would be alot more questions too if I thought about it some more!

I don't know how to do spoilers Niamh, so I can't make comments but basically I was left with the same questions and I like an ending to explain and tie up loose ends. I thought maybe I was thinking too deeply about it and maybe it was just a kind of 'fantasy' movie with a feel good ending. Not sure though, I had such rave reviews, it left me a bit flat:hugesmile:

Oh great, thanks Niamh. I didn't understand either how he could go back as it was no longer the last 8 minutes or what happened to the teacher's spirit as he no longer had his body. Only thing I could think is that it wasn't real but kind of an afterlike he created in his mind, because that's how he wanted the ending to be. A bit Inception-like, if he created a 'happy world' it didn't matter whether it was real or not. Not sure, only thing I could come up with, still I didn't like the ending but I may watch it again sometime to see if I missed something

I don't know whether it was the literal ending or an ending he had created in his mind and it was an afterlife ending or heaven if you believe in it. I wonder if it was a bit Inception like, in that if he thought that was reality then it was. I'm not sure though, I will have to watch it again sometime and maybe I've missed some clues. Its the only way the ending makes any sense, although still not a satisfying ending

tbh the more I think about it the less any of it makes sense. If we are to believe his mind could be kept alive with such horrific injuries, then are we supposed to believe his mind carries on creating some sort of happy ever after dream world with the girl of his dreams, after she switches off the machines keeping his body alive. It's all really confusing and not very well explained earlier in the movie. I don't think it's just me being dumb because my OH didn't understand it either:hugesmile:

Into the wild

10/10
One of the best films i have ever seen
Into the Wild is writer/director Sean Penn's adaptation of the popular book by Jon Krakauer, a nonfiction account of the post-collegiate wanderings of a young Virginia man, who divorces himself from his friends, family, and possessions in search of a greater spiritual knowledge and communion with nature. Upon his 1990 graduation from Emory University in Atlanta, Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch) walks away from a loving if dysfunctional family and sends his nearly 25,000-dollar life savings to Oxfam International. Instead of the normal life his parents planned for him, Chris rechristens himself "Alexander Supertramp" and heads west in his beaten-up automobile until it no longer runs, at which point he takes up hitchhiking. The goal on the horizon? Alaska. By hook or by crook -- but without his limited cash, which he symbolically sets aflame -- Chris/Alexander determines to make it to his personal promised land, with stops along the way to experience America and its people. These adventures include a kayak trip down dangerous rapids, a gig working in a grain mill, extended stays with a hippie couple and a kindly old widower -- and enough cold, hunger, and exhaustion to leave him emotionally defeated more than once. Meanwhile, his parents (William Hurt and Marcia Gay Harden) and sister (Jena Malone) haven't received so much as a postcard from him, and begin to fear the worst.
Really sad ending though and it's based on a true story as well shows the guys picture at the end of the film

Super 8 - pretty good for a kids movie

Super 8 - I think it was a bit foolish to try and aim for 3 different types of audiences - kids, family and sci-fi fans - and I think it will have succeeded in the first two. But the alien and the story behind it I think were left too vague and I wasn't really moved by its quest to return to its planet.
However, it was very funny, moving and there were plenty of action scenes to keep you entertained. I'd say it was 9/10 for a family film. Very 'Stand by Me' meets 'E.T.'

Mean Streets - normally love Scorcese's films but this wasn't that great, it was still a decent film but I just feel like I've sat there for 2 hours and nothing has really happened, the plot didn't really seem to follow any direction at all with several random events which looked like they might be significant but nothing ever followed on from them. It was a weird film really, maybe I just didn't properly get it or something but it was just generally bit boring

Freedom Writers
It's a little bit Dangerous Minds but pretty good
Plot - The storyline with the movie takes place between 1994, beginning with scenes from the 1992 Los Angeles riots. Swank plays the role of Erin Gruwell, a new, excited schoolteacher who leaves the safety of her hometown, Newport Beach, to teach at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, a formerly high achieving school which has recently put an integration plan in place. Her enthusiasm is rapidly challenged when she realizes that her class are all "at-risk" high school students, also known as "unteachables", and not the eager college students she was expecting. The high school students assimilate into racial groups in the classroom, fights break out, and eventually most of the high school students stop attending class. Not only does Gruwell meet opposition from her high school students, but she also has a difficult time with her department head, who refuses to let her teach her high school students with books in case they get damaged and lost, and instead tells her to focus on training them discipline and obedience.
One night, two high school students, Eva (April Lee Hernández), a Hispanic girl and narrator for much of the film, and a Cambodian refugee, Sindy (Jaclyn Ngan), frequent the same convenience store. An additional student, Grant Rice (Armand Jones) is frustrated at losing an arcade game and demands a refund from the owner. When he storms out, Eva's boyfriend attempts a drive-by shooting, intending to kill Grant but misses, accidentally killing Sindy's boyfriend. As a witness, Eva must testify at court; she intends to guard "her own" in her testimony.
At school, Gruwell intercepts a racist drawing by one of her high school students and utilizes it to teach them about the Holocaust. She gradually begins to earn their trust and buys them composition books to record their diaries, in which they talk about their experiences of being abused, seeing their friends die, and being evicted. Determined to reform her high school students, Gruwell takes on two part-time jobs to pay for more books and spends a lot more time at school, to the disappointment of her husband (Patrick Dempsey). Her students start to behave with respect and discover a lot more. A transformation is specifically visible in one student, Marcus (Jason Finn). Gruwell invites various Jewish Holocaust survivors to talk with her class about their experiences and requires the students to attend a field trip to the Museum of Tolerance. Meanwhile, her unorthodox training methods are scorned by her colleagues and department chair Margaret Campbell (Imelda Staunton).
The following year comes, and Gruwell teaches her class again for its sophomore (second) year. In class, when reading The Diary of Anne Frank, they invite Miep Gies (Pat Carroll), the woman who sheltered Anne Frank from the German soldiers to talk to them. After they raise the money to bring her over, Miep shares her experiences hiding Anne Frank. When Marcus tells her that she is his hero, she denies it, claiming she was merely doing the right thing. Her denial leads to Eva to rethink her plan to lie during her testimony. When she testifies, she finally breaks down and tells the truth, much to some of her family members' dismay and to her own risk.
Meanwhile, Gruwell asks her students to write their diaries in book form. She compiles the entries and names it The Freedom Writers Diary. Her husband divorces her and Margaret tells her she cannot teach her kids for their junior year. Gruwell fights this decision, eventually convincing the superintendent to permit her to teach her kids' junior and senior year. The film ends with a note that Gruwell successfully prepared numerous high school students to graduate high school and attend university.

The story is quite good for a spin off but it is too stupid. At least the original movies are pretty much realistic and the characters have some depth.. Arielle Kebbel was the best thing about this
Amazing film
Yes, really thought provoking:
I'm not sure what to make of Alex/Christopher, he was inspirational, but selfish and unprepared at the same time, but for sure he was unwavering in his determination. It must be hard on his sister though, they seemed to be close and he abandoned her. I can't understand how he had maps of the area, yet didn't realise there was a crossing just a quarter of a mile from where he was. Also I don't know why the ending was changed to him dying of poisoning when it was starvation he died of. He was an amazing guy though and the casting I thought was brilliant, one of the best films I've seen in a long time, just an extroadinary and moving story

First time i have seen it for about 8 or 9 years, can't remember liking it as much the first time, not really surprised it has mixed reviews though it's one of those films you either Love or Hate. I love the first part of the Movie right up until they reach the Island but after Richard starts going mad for a bit the story of the film slows down a lot the ending is pretty well done though.. the acting isn't the best but i am suprised Virginie Ledoyen ( the one that plays Françoise ) hasn't been in any big roles since this movie thought she was a decent actress and very very good looking.

I've watched 3 different films today. I really liked this one. Not a lot happened, over 1 hour was filmed in one place, as to be expected really. It sort of had a Phone Booth feel to it in that sense. I thought the way they shot what he was seeing/feeling well and, at some points, really clever. They also got the camcorder scenes really accurate to the actual Aron Ralston footage.

Eden Lake is really good, ending is sad :'(
The Godfather Part II
About time I saw this, what a film :worship: better than the first one for me, especially loved the flashbacks to Vito's rise to power
One of the best movie endings ever as well

Inbetweeners
Thought the pace of the film was a little all over the place in it, there was some funny bits though. All the cliches didn't really come together as well as I expected either, also the ending felt a bit rushed D: It's pretty good but not as good as everyones been banging on about
